February is Career & Technical Education (CTE) Month, a time to recognize the value of CTE and the opportunities it provides for students in Great Bend and beyond. At USD 428, career exploration begins as early as kindergarten, ensuring students are exposed to a variety of career possibilities throughout their educational journey.
From guest speakers and career fairs in elementary schools to hands-on electives in middle school, USD 428 fosters career awareness at every stage. At Great Bend High School (GBHS), students have access to 11 diverse career pathways, including skilled trades, technology, business, and healthcare, allowing them to explore and develop real-world skills before graduation.
"CTE plays a vital role in preparing students for their futures, whether they choose to enter the workforce, pursue higher education, or gain industry-recognized certifications," said Kip Wilson, assistant principal at GBHS. "Through strong partnerships and hands-on learning experiences, our students are gaining exposure to industry standards and workforce expectations."

GBHS Career Pathways include Agricultural Technology and Mechanical Systems, Biotechnology, Business Finance, Construction & Design, Early Childhood Development & Services, Health Science, Manufacturing, Marketing, Media Design & Communications, Restaurant & Event Management, and Teaching/Training.
Industry Partnerships & Hands-On Learning
Behind every successful CTE program are dedicated teachers who bring learning to life in the classroom. At GBHS, exceptional instructors in woodworking, manufacturing, science, welding, media, and many other fields provide top-notch education, guiding students through hands-on projects that mirror real-world experiences. With access to industry-standard tools and training, students graduate with the confidence and skills needed to succeed.
Additionally, GBHS’ CTE programs are strengthened through partnerships with local and regional organizations, giving students access to industry-standard training, equipment, and certifications:
· Barton Community College (BCC): Students can graduate with industry certifications in Welding, Plumbing, Carpentry, Case IH Diesel Mechanics (Top Tech Program), Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA), and Phlebotomy.
· National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER): GBHS students receive training in industry-developed skilled trades curricula, providing a competitive edge for careers in construction and engineering.
· Enterprise KC Partnership: Students can engage in cybersecurity training and career exploration, opening doors to high-demand technology fields.
· Hutchinson Community College: Students can take drafting classes, gaining skills in design and technical drawing.
Internships: The Capstone Experience
As a capstone to their CTE studies, seniors can participate in the GBHS Internship Program, gaining real-world experience in their chosen industry before graduation.
"The GBHS Internship Program allows students to complete the application level/capstone course in their respective CTE industry. During their internships, students participate in real-world experiences, gain valuable skills, build professional networks, and explore future career paths," said Lacy Wolters, ACT/Career Coordinator at GBHS. "Since the internship program launched three years ago, nearly 60 GBHS students have completed internships with local businesses and organizations. We are thankful for the support of our host internship partners as we prepare our students to be college and career-ready!"
Some students graduate from GBHS with certifications that allow them to enter the workforce immediately, such as Welding and Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) credentials. Career and Technical Student Organizations, such as HOSA and Educators Rising, enhance learning by developing leadership skills, teamwork, and real-world problem-solving abilities.
With CTE programs aligning with Kansas and local workforce needs, USD 428 and Great Bend High School remain committed to equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary for their next step in life. As CTE Month unfolds, the district encourages students, parents, and the community to explore the diverse opportunities available within career and technical education.
