Late summer has arrived, depositing ripe tomatoes on my window ledge. Just as I rely on moon cycles and flipping calendar pages, I expect a moment during the last days of August and beginning of September when I wake up every morning to see red-orange fruits standing sentinel-like above our kitchen sink.

I’ve already canned or frozen the first heavy tomato harvest, adding onions, peppers, garlic, and seasonings to turn them into salsa that dresses potato and corn chips and well as salads and casseroles throughout the upcoming months. Once that initial picking and canning ends, our vines take a breather every summer, due, perhaps, to scorching heat that prevents them from pollinating.

No matter how diligently I water or mulch, triple digit temps force those vines to kick back and rest. I get it. I want to do the same when just walking out the door produces drenching sweat. Once evenings and early mornings turn cooler, little yellow blossoms once again morph into ballooning green fruits. However, it takes a while for the plants to catch up to earlier production mode. Once fruits start turning orange, I pick em and put em on the window sill to prevent birds and grasshoppers from nibbling them. This strategy results in a couple of tomatoes every day or two for a couple of weeks--not enough to freeze or can.

Who knows how, but I learned not to keep whole tomatoes in the fridge. As a result, these loners sunbathe in the window as they ripen and end up chopped into salads or sliced with bacon or ham on sandwiches. Eventually, more collect than we eat in a day, but not enough to freeze or can so there they sit, looking forlorn. Left to their own devices, they invite fruit flies to get to know one another so well that we soon have a swarm of progeny acting like our kitchen is Dulles Airport. Yikes.

That event requires either eating the tomatoes faster or constructing traps to control those miniscule flies high school biology classes study. It also begs the question. Are fresh tomatoes worth inviting fruit flies into the kitchen? Absolutely!

Once you conquer the fruit fly invasion, summer’s great pleasure involves fresh from the vine tomatoes. Devour the first standing in the garden with juices dribbling down your chin. After that, satisfaction requires a straight week of BLT sandwiches once, twice, or thrice a day. Once those sammies get boring, it’s time to slice those orbs thick to make tomato/mayo sandwiches for another feast or three. Follow that with a week-long barrage of thick tomato slices topped with fresh mozzarella and broiled til golden cheese drizzles over the edges. As harvest escalates, add chopped tomatoes to creamy cottage cheese or stuff hollowed-out tomatoes with cottage cheese or tuna salad to add variety. The possibilities are limitless.

Enough time has passed that that line of tomatoes on the window sill will soon overflow the space. In short time, fruits ripening two at time will shift to harvest overload. Fire up the canner or make room in the freezer!

MADORIN: Maters in the window

Mary Elaine Barry became a client at The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation in 2022, while struggling with substance-use disorder and mental-health issues.

Now she is eagerly awaiting her one-year anniversary of being clean, while working at a job she loves, continuing her therapy sessions and asking for help when necessary.

Barry’s success story is just one example of how enhanced services at The Center are making genuine differences in people’s lives, Executive Director Julie Kramp said.

“Our staff is diligent in providing all the services included in our Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) program,” Kramp explained. “A CCBHC cares for the whole person with an integrated approach.

“While Mary is certainly not the only client to benefit from these enhanced services, her success illustrates what we can do with this holistic approach.”

Mary Barry’s story Methamphetamine was often Barry’s drug of choice when she was a young adult. She managed to get sober for 17 years but went back to her old ways when, once again, she fell in with the wrong crowd.

Almost a year ago, Barry began inpatient treatment for her substance-use disorder and today is looking forward to Oct. 13 when she will celebrate one year of being sober.

Her road to recovery began when she sought help at The Center where she was counseled by Kevin Ford, the non-profit-agency’s director of its Substance-Use Program.

“Then I went to City on a Hill at Dighton,” Barry said. “This was a 29-day inpatient treatment program that serves only women and is Christian-based.

“Today, with the help of many people at The Center and their ACT team, I am doing well. I can call on them any time – day or night – if I need to.”

ACT stands for Assertive Community Treatment, which offers person-centered services with a recovery-based approach.

Barry, 58, attends counseling sessions with Ford and Shannon Brandon, peer-support specialist.

In addition, she works at Great Bend Coffee, 2015 Lakin, five days a week as a prep cook and dishwasher, and is accepting more responsibility by stepping up to the cash register and making coffee.

“I had wanted to get a second job to help pay my bills and get a place of my own,” Barry recalled. “Then Noell Miller at The Center suggested I ask for more hours at Great Bend Coffee, which I did. And now I don’t have to get a second job.

“Great Bend Coffee is family-oriented and the job is rewarding. But my favorite thing is when I told LeResa Likes, the owner, that I was going for inpatient treatment, she encouraged me to ‘get healthy.’ I left there in tears that day; I was so grateful.”

Likes held Barry’s job for her. “When I told her I was back in town, she said ‘see you in the morning.’ She accepted me right back.”

Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS) representatives came to town earlier this year to talk with staff and clients in connection with CCBHC requirements. Barry was one of the interviewees.

Noell Miller, Individual Placement Support/Supported Employment Supervisor at The Center, said Barry outlined her story of recovery during the interview.

“Mary is a motivated go-getter, with a passion for her work and a willingness to mentor others,” Miller said. “She focuses on maintaining good mental and physical health.

“She keeps the lines of communication open with us and her boss, while speaking up for herself. Mary is keeping her doctors’ appointments and meeting with her counselor, while concentrating on preventive care for her physical and mental-health.”

Barry also is learning to budget her money with the help of the ACT team and others.

Miller noted that part of the CCBHC’s focus is supported employment “because a job can help our clients regain the independence they may have lost. It also can reduce

mental-health concerns and allow someone to move beyond the need for public assistance.

“Mary is a true success story and the perfect example of where caring for the whole person can lead.”

Calling all 3-5 year olds. School is back in session and so is our Turtle Tots program.  Many of our past participants are now in kindergarten, so we are looking for a new crew of preschoolers ready to learn about the outdoors. 

Turtle Tots is a monthly program for youth ages 3-5 attending with their caregiver.  This one-hour program is offered at no charge.  Upcoming dates: Sept. 13, Oct. 4 and Nov. 22 at 10am.

Sept. 13 - Butterflies, Beetles, and Bees, Oh My! We'll go exploring for pollinators, examine the butterfly lifecycle, read a story, and make a craft. We always try to go outside for a portion of the program as weather permits.

Hunter Education course to be hosted in Great Bend

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae.

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep pets away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. Tickets on sale for United Way's Beer & BBQ event

Last week, Kansas politics was rocked by scandal. Policymakers must respond with carefully-crafted policy change, not knee-jerk reactions that could derail the efforts of Kansans working to rebuild their lives.

The late Jonathan Clayton’s truck and body were found on Sunday, August 25, apparently having left the road and hit a tree several days earlier.&nbsp; Clayton had worked as the Director of Economic Recovery in the Kansas Department of Commerce until 2023, where he oversaw millions of dollars in grants from a program called Building a Stronger Economy (BASE). On August 8, Clayton apparently sent an email to journalists predicting his own death and suggesting that the Department of Commerce used a “scheme” to choose grant finalists, favoring the projects in the districts of certain elected officials. Curious readers can read more about&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/article291613255.html">this unfolding story</a>&nbsp;in this newspaper and other Kansas sources.

Reporters next discovered that Clayton had been convicted of mishandling millions of public dollars while working in Pennsylvania. A statement by Governor Laura Kelly’s Office stated that Kansas Law prohibited a federal background check before hiring Clayton.&nbsp; Kelly is calling for changes to the law, and she has begun an investigation.

Of course, it is scandalous for the state to hire someone overseeing millions of taxpayer dollars, without knowing that he had a criminal conviction for mishandling finances in another state.&nbsp; However, the Governor and Legislature must respond wisely.

A foolhardy response by policymakers would mean havoc for hundreds of thousands of Kansans seeking to rebuild their lives after criminal convictions.&nbsp; In 2018, Kansas joined many other states in backing “<a target="_blank" href="https://www.nelp.org/insights-research/ban-the-box-fair-chance-hiring-state-and-local-guide/">ban the box</a>,” a nationwide campaign to remove the “have you ever been convicted of a felony” question from state job applications.&nbsp; Currently, 37 states join 150 cities and counties in banning the box for state job applicants.&nbsp; The federal government has done so as well, and they also ban the box for employees of government contractors.&nbsp; Fifteen states and several cities have also banned the box for private employers.&nbsp; These include nearby Kansas City, MO and Columbia, MO, but none in Kansas.&nbsp; “Ban the box” laws are important and should be expanded, not repealed.

Millions of Americans have felony convictions.&nbsp; These are mostly for nonviolent offenses, often when the person was much younger.&nbsp; Most are drug related.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.nelp.org/app/uploads/2024/04/Research-Supports-Fair-Chance-Policies-Apr.2024.pdf">Research shows</a>&nbsp;that felony convictions make it far harder for those who have served their sentences to find work, even if the offense was decades ago and had nothing to do with the work they seek. Additional research shows that finding steady work is the single most important thing that a person can do to avoid re-offending. Many have families that they will be unable to support if they cannot work, or if they return to prison.&nbsp; Often, this forces those families to rely on public assistance.&nbsp; Some become homeless.

Banning the box does not have to stop an employer from inquiring into a job applicant’s criminal history.&nbsp; It only prevents the employer from pre-emptively screening and ruling out applicants.&nbsp; Laws can still allow a complete background check on applicants such as Mr. Clayton, once the employer has tentatively decided to offer them a job. The job offer can be revoked if the inquiry reveals disqualifying convictions directly related to the job being filled.&nbsp; This is exactly how the Kansas law needs to be changed.&nbsp; Smart policies can protect the public from fraud, but policymakers should not react to this scandal by ruining the futures of hundreds of thousands of Kansans seeking a second chance.

Eagle Media's news week in review

Ben Whabnoski has no business being in an airplane. Fortunately, Ben is merely a character played by Kyle Franklin, a third-generation pilot and owner of Franklin's Flying Circus, which will be part of Great Bend Airfest on Sept. 20-22. Franklin's drunken character likes to steal planes or hijack a tour in the 1956 Piper Super Cub. The result is always some laughs and some impressive feats of flying.

"For me to go out and do the type of flying I'm doing in that comedy act, I've learned I can't just really get in the airplane and go out and do that stuff," Franklin said. "I have to be in that character. I have to get in that mindset."

In his early teenage years, Franklin had practiced the art of wingwalking while on the ground. At the age of 14, he did it in the air for the first time. Just a few years later, the show's regular wingwalker quit and Franklin stepped in for a season at the age of 17. He remained a wingwalker for the next eight years. Later, he and his wife, Liz, teamed up for the comedy act featuring Ben Whabnoski.

"We enjoy the acts we do but we get bored very easily, so we're always trying to come up with different acts and ideas," Franklin said. "My father was a showman, and he likes doing different costume acts as well. I just ran with that."

Franklin said each comedy act is designed around the particular location of an airshow. At Great Bend Airfest, he will also perform a Deadstickish Act where he describes some of his aerobatic moves from the cockpit to the crowd below before shutting off the engine prior to landing the plane. The comedy act will include stunts like dragging the wing on the ground.

"Whether you know airplanes or not, you know you're not supposed to drag the wings on the ground," he said. "We have our tricks behind it. I have steel skid plates and a lot of layers of duct tape on the wingtips to protect them so I don't damage the wood or fabric on the wing. You still have to be careful on hard you hit them, the angle you hit them, because it will try to grab and pull you in."

Franklin said while the aerobatics and stunts look dangerous, he has had more scares in the plane while flying to and from shows. Since 1988, his family has disassembled and trucked plans to shows. It takes Kyle and Liz approximately 90 minutes to take apart or put together the Super Cub.

The Franklins will be available for autographs after their performances each day at Great Bend Airfest.

"I have to be in that character. I have to get in that mindset."In his early teenage years, Franklin had practiced the art of wingwalking while on the ground. At the age of 14, he did it in the air for the first time. Just a few years later, the show's regular wingwalker quit and Franklin stepped in for a season at the age of 17. He remained a wingwalker for the next eight years. Later, he and his wife, Liz, teamed up for the comedy act featuring Ben Whabnoski."We enjoy the acts we do but we get bored very easily, so we're always trying to come up with different acts and ideas," Franklin said. "My father was a showman, and he likes doing different costume acts as well. I just ran with that."Franklin said each comedy act is designed around the particular location of an airshow. At Great Bend Airfest, he will also perform a Deadstickish Act where he describes some of his aerobatic moves from the cockpit to the crowd below before shutting off the engine prior to landing the plane. The comedy act will include stunts like dragging the wing on the ground."Whether you know airplanes or not, you know you're not supposed to drag the wings on the ground," he said. "We have our tricks behind it. I have steel skid plates and a lot of layers of duct tape on the wingtips to protect them so I don't damage the wood or fabric on the wing. You still have to be careful on hard you hit them, the angle you hit them, because it will try to grab and pull you in."Franklin said while the aerobatics and stunts look dangerous, he has had more scares in the plane while flying to and from shows. Since 1988, his family has disassembled and trucked plans to shows. MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State University plant pathologists and entomologists are reporting the first known case of corn stunt disease in Kansas, coming on the heels of reports in neighboring Oklahoma and Missouri.

Row crop plant pathologist Rodrigo Onofre said that as of Aug. 29, corn stunt disease and associated symptoms have been confirmed in field corn in Sedgwick, Pratt, Stafford and Edwards counties; and sweet corn in Riley County.

“Recent scouting efforts across Kansas confirm active leaf hoppers in many other counties in central and southwest Kansas,” Onofre said.

The incidence of disease was “low overall,” according to Onofre, and much of the corn crop is in its later stages of maturity.

Corn stunt is a bacterial disease that results in severely stunted plants that often produce multiple small ears with loose or missing kernels. It may also result in leaves turning red.

“Other biotic and abiotic factors can cause red or purple discoloration in corn, so laboratory testing is important to diagnose corn stunt disease and distinguish it from other stressors,” Onofre said.

Onofre encourages producers to submit suspected samples of corn stunt to the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.plantpath.k-state.edu/extension/plant-disease-diagnostic-lab/">K-State Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab</a>. Producers can contact their&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/about/statewide-locations/">local extension agent</a>&nbsp;for help in submitting a sample, or follow the lab’s instructions that are&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.plantpath.k-state.edu/extension/plant-disease-diagnostic-lab/collection-guidelines/">available online</a>.

During his high school days, Eston Juno set some insane standards to follow at Otis-Bison High.

“To me being a leader meant looking over everyone and setting a good example,” the 2024 Otis-Bison graduate said. “Doing good things that can be passed down to others and keeping a good culture flowing. Doing this will help you and your peers achieve many goals. Being a leader takes a lot of courage and drive, but it is an important thing to have within your community, school, work or wherever you are.”

During his time at Otis-Bison, Juno participated in football, basketball, traveling baseball and track. He also was a big part of various clubs such has Stuco, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, 4-H and National Honor Society. He fashioned a 3.93 GPA in high school.

“My favorite sport was probably football,” Juno said. “One of my best games was on Oct. 1, 2021 against Tescott. I was a sophomore at the time and I had one of my best receiving games of my career. I had six receptions for 104 yards and four touchdowns, while also having seven tackles and one tackle for loss in the 72-22 win over them.”

Juno was also a defensive end for his first two years of high school and linebacker for his last two years.&nbsp;

“One of my best defensive games was at linebacker when we played the ranked Sylvan-Lucus Mustangs,” he said. “They pointed us a couple minutes after halftime and I still racked up 13 tackles for the first half.”

“Eston’s work ethic was unmatched,” current Cougar senior Ian Haselhorst said. “Everyone noticed that Eston worked harder than most and cared about Otis-Bison and being the best leader he could. He really set an example, it got to the point where staff members at our school used the phrase ‘be a leader like Eston’ or ‘set an example like Eston.’ “

Juno is now taking his leadership qualities to the real world. He’s taking a one-year oil and natural gas program at Barton Community College.

“During high school I found out about the natural gas industry when we would look at careers during our seminar. I quickly took interest in it,” Juno said. “So I applied at Barton for the natural gas program and got in. I also knew the manager of the storage field at the Oneok Bushton facility and he was able to get me an internship for the summer. It was a great experience and I hope I can work there after school.”

His daily tasks normally were helping write work permits, help perform maintenance on pumps and help turn valves.

“Some of the fascinating aspects of the oil and gas industry is the amount of opportunities this career has,” Juno said. “They have so many different jobs within the career that can best suit your skills. Also it is a great paying job and has great benefits. Lastly, the evolving equipment and strategies are constantly getting better.”

“Eston is definitely the most hardest working person I’ve ever met,” senior Jake Hoopingarner said. “The guy just does all the dirty stuff, gets no praise and just does it over and over again. Our basketball coach said many, many times that if he could coach 10 of him, he would do that for the rest of his life.”

His former teammates knew Juno would go big in life.

“He’s a really smart kid with a good work ethic,” Cougar grad Riley Polly said. “He should do great in life.”

“He’s a great leader. His junior year, my freshman year, I looked up to him a lot,” junior Louis McVey said. “As a younger guy, he was the upperclassmen that you wanted to emulate. Everything he does, he does to 100%.”

“I have definitely learned that I have more skills than I thought I had,” he said. “My problem solving skills have gotten a lot better as well as my communication skills. Working at Oneok this summer really helped me get better at those skills. That’s what will help me be successful in my career and just life in general.”

“It was honestly great when me or another teammate didn’t understand something,” Haselhorst said. “He always explained it so that it made sense. He was very patient as well and didn’t judge you for not knowing things.”

Juno has especially been instrumental in playing older brother and junior Kelson.

“He was always a leader in sports and always works hard,” Kelson said.

“I have learned that being around people makes the experience a lot better and helps your growth,” the elder Juno said.

Eston noted sports and clubs served a useful role in their time in high school.

“All the sports and clubs taught me and my friends about life,” he said. “It can give you so many tools that will help you be successful in the real world.”

Eston doesn’t plan to stop promoting positivity in other people’s lives.

“Being a positive influence can have many influences. People that are a positive influence can create a great environment for others,” he said. “This can help with relationships and inspire change for your peers. This will help better yourself and everyone around you.”

In mid-August, Great Bend city administration announced the compost site
had been receiving banned material such as construction material, processed lumber, tires, household trash and even dead animals. The recent illegal
dumping event at the compost site resulted in the discovery that the
Great Bend code contains two sections prohibiting illegal dumping but with
different penalties. 


On Tuesday, the Great Bend City Council, with the recommendation from City
Attorney Allen Glendenning, cleared up the ordinance with obsolete language.


"The two ordinances had different penalties and passed at different times," said Glendenning. "The new ordinance eliminates one of those and goes with the most recent version continuing forward. It doesn't really change anything about what is legal or illegal. It just gets us one section."

is only permitted to take trees, tree limbs, grass and leaves. KDHE does make
inspections to the city’s site and can fine or revoke the city’s permit for
violations outside their permitted use.
