Park Elementary students and staff had a unique beginning to the school year on Aug. 14. At 11:06 that morning, the school was notified by Kansas Gas Service of a possible gas leak in the vicinity of the school. During Wednesday's USD 428 Board of Education Luncheon at the school, Principal Kelsey Sciacca was able to laugh about the incident, especially the successful effort to evacuate first-year kindergartners eating lunch. 

Sciacca also had good news about the Booster Club's spring fundraiser that brought in $18,000 for the school. Some of those funds were used to buy umbrellas for tables in front of the school.

"We had no one eating in the gym today," Sciacca said. "When it's beautiful, we are blessed to have several areas - the garden, outside tables, and out front. We've added umbrellas to those tables that are out front."

Funds were also used to purchase an ice machine for the teachers' lounge. Anna Popp repainted murals in the school's gymnasium, replacing old artwork dating back 24 and 41 years. The Booster Club funds will also go toward the installation of a garden canopy and possible the purchase of more outdoor tables in front of the school.

Sciacca reported there are 256 students enrolled at the school this year, approximately 10 fewer students than last year. This year's group includes 71 English Language students and 16 non-English students.

Great Bend's Park School making the most of $18,000 fundraiser last spring

October 6-12 is an exciting time as 4-H families across the nation celebrate National 4-H Week! Per the National 4-H website, 4-H was established as Youth Clubs in 1902 with agricultural after-school clubs focused on particular ag products such as tomatoes or corn. In 1912, these groups were referred to as 4-H Clubs in recognition of the clover pin developed in 1910. The passage of the Smith-Lever Act in 1914 created the Cooperative Extension System at USDA and nationalized 4-H. By 1914, 4-H Clubs were formed and the clover emblem was adopted. The Cooperative Extension System is a partnership of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture within the USDA, more than 100 land-grant universities and more than 3000 county offices across the nation, including all 105 counties in Kansas. Cooperative Extension combines the expertise and resources of federal, state, and local governments to meet the need for research, knowledge, and educational programs. In 4-H, we believe in the power of young people. We see that every child has valuable strengths and real influence to improve the world around us.

On October 1, I will be joined by a few of our 4-H Ambassadors to address the Barton County Commission. We were delighted that they will consider a proclamation to state “4-H, as delivered by area Cooperative Extension agencies, has helped thousands of youth become true leaders, entrepreneurs and visionaries. By declaring October 6 – 12, 2024, as National 4-H Week, the Commission recognizes the importance of using the Head, Heart, Hands and Health, the four core values of the 4-H mission, to become beyond ready.”

If you know of a young person who would benefit from the opportunities of 4-H, enrollment for the new year began October 1! The Cottonwood Extension District offers seven community clubs in Barton County and over 45 project areas from Art to Woodworking for youth to explore, learn, and grow. Community service and citizenship are hallmarks of the 4-H program! 48Hrs of 4-H is a state-wide service challenge. Cottonwood-Barton 4-H families will be gathering on October 12th to bake and package thank you cookie platters for First Responder units across the county. Previous projects have included clean up at Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo and the 4-H Educational grounds. Many individual clubs will take on separate projects in their town. Teaching youth the value of giving back to their communities helps all communities be stronger and to develop the leaders needed to not just survive but to thrive!

The 60th annual meeting of the Kansas-Oklahoma Arkansas River Commission (KOARC) will be held in the Sedgwick Room at the K-State Research and Extension – Sedgwick County Education Center, located at 7001 W 21st Street N, Wichita, Kansas, on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2024, at 9 a.m.

Kansas and Oklahoma entered the Arkansas River Compact in 1965. The purposes of the Compact are to promote interstate comity, to equitably divide and promote the orderly development of the waters of the lower Arkansas River basin, to provide an agency for administering the waters of the basin, and to encourage an active pollution abatement program in each state.

The Compact Commission is composed of three Commissioners appointed by the Governor of Kansas and three Commissioners appointed by the Governor of Oklahoma; it is chaired by a federal representative appointed by the President of the United States.

Kansas-Oklahoma Arkansas River Commission meeting Oct. 2

SHERMAN COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just after 10a.m. Saturday in Sherman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by&nbsp; Brandon John Knipp, 40, Russell, was&nbsp;westbound on Old Highway 24 just west of County Road 21.

The front brake locked up. The motorcycle entered the north ditch and came to rest on its left side.&nbsp; EMS transported Knipp to Goodland Regional Medical Center.&nbsp; A passenger Shelby Ann Knipp, 38, Russell, was not injured. They were not wearing helmets, according to the KHP.

For the third time in just over a year, the American Red Cross is rapidly mobilizing volunteers and relief supplies to respond as another major hurricane bears down on communities in the Florida Panhandle.

As Hurricane Helene moves closer to the U.S., the Red Cross has assigned some 360 trained disaster workers, including five volunteers from Kansas. They are ready to help with sheltering, feeding and logistics.

The Red Cross has deployed trailers of supplies and is ready to open dozens of shelters to help people in need. The Red Cross is also readying some 45,000 snacks and ready-to-eat meals, as well as emergency response vehicles.

In addition, the Red Cross has sent hundreds of blood products to Florida to ensure blood remains available for patients in areas likely to be impacted by the storm. Over the coming days, the Red Cross anticipates blood drive cancellations and lower donor turnout throughout the Southeast as communities confront dangerous weather conditions.

Producers have a lot to consider when deciding when to start planting wheat — moisture, soil temperature, Hessian fly-free dates and more. Based on research from Kansas State University, another one of these considerations may appear small, at least physically, but could have a big impact come harvest — coleoptile length.&nbsp;

When a wheat seed germinates, one of the first structures to emerge from the seed after the seminal roots is the coleoptile. This plant part is a rigid protective structure that covers the emerging shoot of a wheat plant. As the wheat plant develops, this covering continues to elongate as the young seedling pushes through the soil until it breaks the surface and reaches sunlight. Then, the coleoptile stops growing and the first true leaf emerges through it.&nbsp;

However, if a wheat seed is planted too deep or into the wrong soil conditions, the coleoptile may not be able to break through the soil, leading to a variety of compounding issues for wheat stand establishment. In this case, when the coleoptile is unable to emerge, the first true leaf may emerge underneath the soil’s surface. Then, the leaf takes on an accordion-like appearance, the wheat plant typically becomes yellow and eventually the plant dies. Even if the plant survives, it has limited access to nutrients and sunlight and will result in lower yields.&nbsp;

So how do producers prevent this situation? An additional consideration is soil temperature. Planting wheat too early into warm soil temperatures can further reduce the coleoptile length. Some varieties will not germinate when soil temperatures are greater than 85°F and coleoptile length can be reduced by as much as 60 percent in higher temperatures. K-State recommends that if producers choose to plant in warmer soil temperatures, plant at a shallower depth (3/4 to 1 inch deep), even if moisture is absent in the top layers of soil. Planting wheat deep (greater than 2 inches) increases the risk of poor emergence and unacceptable stands.

By understanding the temperature sensitivity and coleoptile length of their selected wheat varieties, producers have one more tool to help them decide when to plant and how deep to promote better wheat stand establishment.&nbsp;

Over an 11-year period of time, not many football coaches in Kansas have the win total of Hoisington High School’s Zach Baird. Baird joined the “100-wins
club” Friday, Sept. 27 after the Cardinals defeated Southwestern Heights 53-6.


“It’s a credit to this coaching staff,” said Baird. “They’re great coaches but
they’re better people. They all bring their own style and their own flare to
it. I’d be remiss if I didn’t talk about assistant coach Matt Koelsch. He’s
what I call our culture keeper. He’s constantly keeping our culture where it
needs to be.”


Along with Baird and Koelsch, Kyle Haxton, Rob England and Eric Steiner round
out the coaching staff for Hoisington.


“They’ll show up in the summer in the weight room, even when they’re not
getting paid for it,” said Baird. “We’ve also had great administration. When we
first came on, Bill Lowry (former USD 431 superintendent) and Joel Mason
(former activities director, current principal) were a big part of this. It
takes a village.”


With the win Friday, Hoisington is 39-2 in district play in the past 11 years
under Baird. Of Hoisington High School’s 29 playoff wins in school history, 24
of them have been under Baird. 


A 2003 Hoisington graduate, Baird likes how life turned out.


“At one point in time shortly after college, I thought I might be trying to go
to Hays,” said Baird. “TMP had a spot open as an assistant. That’s the way life
works out. I feel extremely blessed and lucky to be in Hoisington. I love it. I’m
very biased toward our community and people. I couldn’t have dreamed it any
bigger than what it is.”


Baird has led Hoisington to the State semifinals five times and two state
runner-up finishes in 2020 and 2023. Along with a few words from Principal Mason Friday night, the team recognized Baird by giving him the game ball.

“I tell our players it’s a railroad town,” said Baird. “It’s an oil town. It’s
an agriculture town. We’re made up of tough, hardworking people. That’s what we
want to display and pay tribute to when we play the game.”&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Good rains around Central Kansas have been rare in recent months, but when the precipitation does fall, it has to go somewhere. In Great Bend, storm drains carry the unfiltered runoff to various streams and sandpits throughout the community. Public Works Director Jason Cauley reminds residents to be mindful of what they can prevent from entering the storm sewer system, including grass clippings and fertilizers.

"Things like that can be swept down the storm sewer and can clog the storm sewer," he said, "as well as put those chemicals into our streams, which then would also precipitate growth of algae and other things that don't really need to be in our streams."

Leaky vehicles can also contribute to pollution in the storm drains. While those issues may be difficult to control, Cauley advises residents to use a car wash facility when hosing down a car. Wastewater there is contained, pumped, and transported to a treatment facility.

"If you do it at home, what they recommend doing is having you pull up in the grass and washing it," Cauley said. "The ground will act as a filter for those types of things. That will not get into the storm system itself."

Other tips from onlyraindownthedrain.com include:

- Fertilize sparingly. Use slow-release fertilizer with September being the best month for application.

- Mow high and leave the clippings on the lawn. It's the best kind of natural fertilizer.

- Avoid using fertilizers or pesticides near wellheads or within 75 feet of waterways.

- Sweep any lawn chemicals or yard debris back into the lawn. Sweep, don't hose, the driveway.

From the first of the year through Aug. 31, the American Library Association reports 414 attempts to censor library materials and services in libraries across the United States, with 1,128 unique titles targeted for censorship. Like other libraries across the nation, the Great Bend Public Library is celebrating Banned Books Week from Sept. 22-28. Director Maribeth Shafer said the week is a celebration of the First Amendment.

"Our Founding Fathers wanted to make sure everybody had a right to the information they need," she said. "We try to have a collection that supports our community and is information that our community is looking for. We also try to make sure we represent all views. We're not trying to pick sides. We're just trying to provide information for the people when they need it."

Shafer said the Great Bend library has had no challenges recently, but there is a protocol in place should a title or service be questioned. The first step is addressing the complaint with an employee.

"If it goes beyond that, there's a form they fill out," Shafer said. "It asks them the title, what they found concerning or what they objected to. We ask if they read the item or watched the item in its entirety. We require the person to be a card-holding member of the library to submit a request, and we only deal with one request at a time. That way, we can give it our full attention and due process."

In an American Library Association survey of voters and public school parents, 71 percent of respondents across all political parties opposed removing books from libraries. Everything from the dictionary to Anne Frank's diary to E.B. White's "Charlotte's Web" have been banned somewhere. In 2006, "Charlotte's Web" was banned by an unnamed Kansas school district because the talking animals were deemed blasphemous.

Ellinwood City Administrator Chris Komarek said the town, with an estimated population
of 2,000, uses both water towers.

Once the towers get close to being full, the wells shut off and the water comes back out of the towers and into the system. It's a bowl that constantly fluctuates."

A $99,000 project was recently completed that sandblasted the inside of the
older tower and repainted the exterior, that includes more of the Ellinwood
school colors.


"We're very blessed to have two water towers," said Komarek. "Especially when you take one down like this for maintenance, it's pretty rough to maintain your water system, pressure and have any reserve in your system in case of a fire. By having two towers, when you take one out, it's not so critical."

The small tower in Ellinwood holds 50,000 gallons of water while the larger one
holds 300,000 gallons. Komarek said the city uses approximately 7 million to 8
million gallons of water each month.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Earlier this month, the USD 428 Board of Education voted to approve the sale of the former District Education Center at 201 S. Patton in Great Bend for $700,000. With no bids on the former central kitchen building at 2201 Broadway Ave., the board agreed to find a commercial realtor to assist with the sale. At Wednesday's board luncheon at Park Elementary School, Assistant Superintendent John Popp said two real estate firms submitted bids.

"Really, what it comes down to is the MPIRE group is willing to give us a commission rate of four percent, and the Keller group is at 4.95 percent," he said. "They both sell real estate, they both list them, they both had a good plan for how they would market our stuff."

Board member Karen Lindberg, an employee at MPIRE, abstained from the discussion and the vote. The board voted 5-0 to use MPIRE for the listing. The district will attempt to sell the former maintenance shop located at 12th and Williams via the bid seal process. To help empty that building, the district will host a sale of surplus items. District staff will get first access on Thursday, Sept. 3 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. The sale will be open to the public the following day with hours of the sale to be determined.

USD 428 chooses MPIRE Realty as commercial realtor for former central kitchen

The Barton Performing Arts Department will host its annual “Autumn Arts” sneak preview concert at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Admission is free.

Performing ensembles will give the audience a sneak preview of what the groups will present this year. Groups who will take the stage include Hilltop Singers, Concert Choir, Prairie Winds Symphony Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Barton Dance Theatre. Dan and Denise Williams will perform a Theatre short titled “Post-its, Notes on a Marriage,” by Paul Dooley and Winnie Holzman, which is an homage to A.R. Gurney’s “Love Letters,” and brings a modern twist to the stories from married life.

The concert will also include a special performance for the entire second act of the show by Barton Director of Accompaniment Dr. Alejandro Avila with the Prairie Winds Symphony Band, performing George Gershwin’s iconic “Rhapsody in Blue” in honor of the hundredth anniversary of this composition.

Avila said “Rhapsody in Blue” ranks high amongst noteworthy compositions in American music.

“It's a piece that defined the American Jazz Age in 1924 and a perfect fusion between classical and jazz idioms,” he said. “It's been an influential composition, featured in countless films, TV series, radio, commercials, and concerts across the states and abroad. We’ve worked very hard to put this together in a short amount of time. It’s a special treat for our local community to have a chance to see this performance.”

The Performing Arts Department will also reveal its first set of Hall of Fame inductees, which will be officially inducted at the Holiday Concert on Dec. 5.

Barton Performing Arts Department presents 'Autumn Arts' concert

On Oct. 16, Great Bend Public Schools will join together in celebrating Unity Day as part of the National Bully Prevention Month. Unity Day encourages students, staff, and the broader community to come together in a visible show of support for kindness, inclusion, and acceptance. The district invites everyone to wear orange on the day to demonstrate their commitment to standing against bullying.

In addition to students and staff, local businesses and community members are also encouraged to participate by wearing orange. School counselors are leading efforts to spread the message across the community, ensuring that this day of unity reaches beyond school walls. A special Unity Day t-shirt is being produced, and those interested can purchase one through an online store with Identifications until Sept. 29.

“As district employees, we all see kids who move throughout the district,” said Alex Westhoff, a Student &amp; Family Advocate at Eisenhower Elementary. “Unity Day is a way to show students, families, and the community that we are a unified front when it comes to supporting students, not just on Unity Day but every day.”

Throughout October, each school in the district will be engaging in a variety of activities, including lessons, videos, and daily announcements, all promoting anti-bullying messages through the importance of kindness and inclusion. These initiatives aim to reinforce the message that every student should feel welcome, valued, and included.
