For a third year, the Great Bend Police Department is stepping in to make the community cleaner. Project Clean Sweep was started to clean up abatements and areas with trash and refuse.
With spring weather returning, the Police Department began the 2025 season of Clean Sweep earlier this month by removing trash from the ditch in the 2100 block of Frey Street. The effort was also beneficial in locating a handgun in the ditch.
City Administrator Logan Burns thanked the Police Department for their service.
"They've had an ongoing project at the Frey Street ditch getting things picked up," said Burns. "I'm sure they will have plenty of projects coming up soon."
The project is a collaboration between the Police Department and Great Bend Municipal Court in which people who owe a fine are given an opportunity to perform community service in lieu of paying the fine.
