Julie Robben, Director of Imaging at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital (PVCH), recently graduated from the Kansas Hospital Association (KHA) Leadership Institute.

Melanie Urban, Administrator at PVCH, nominated Robben to be part of KHA’s select group of 32 Kansas hospital leaders.

“I was excited for the opportunity to enhance my skills so that I can lead my team effectively and efficiently, while always keeping high-quality care and treatment for our patients at the forefront,” Robben said.

Since communicating with colleagues, patients and families is an integral part of Robben’s job, she is glad she took advantage of the Institute’s curriculum.

“Our Imaging professionals interact with a variety of people, which entails the interpersonal skills necessary for excellent care,” Robben commented. “For example, good communication ensures procedures are done properly and in a timely manner.

“In addition, Imaging collaborates with other PVCH departments, as well as entities outside the hospital. I want to be available to all of them. Patient care is a team effort, which means I need to be proactive so that I can positively influence patient care and provide exceptional Imaging services.”

Course topics at the Institute included: Building a Foundation; Communicating Strategically; Growing an Effective Team; Resolving Conflict; and Leading into the Future.

“Each of these topics zeroed in on the many areas involved in my Imaging position,” Robben noted. “This is why I am so thankful that I was given this opportunity. Pawnee Valley Community Hospital invests in its staff to provide the best services possible.

“Many employers throw people into positions without the proper training. That doesn’t happen here. I have had excellent guidance and mentors, and am grateful for their belief in me and allowing me to grow in my role.”

Leadership Institute class sessions were presented in Salina and Overland Park from June through September. Robben attended the graduation ceremony at the KHA annual meeting.

The advisory was issued because of a waterline break at the water treatment plant resulting in potential bacterial contamination in the water entering the distribution system.

Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind notice following testing at a certified laboratory.

Drinking water samples collected from the City of Russell indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved.

Boil water advisory rescinded for the city of Russell public water supply

Wendy Lockwood, a long-time Great Bend resident, is eager to help manage the “incredible growth” that is coming to The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation in 2025 and beyond.

Lockwood has been named the new executive director at The Center, 5815 Broadway, replacing Julie Kramp who is retiring effective Dec. 27.

“We are looking at a period of tremendous expansion,” said Lockwood, who has served The Center for three decades. “I will focus on managing this growth with the support of our great staff of professionals.”

To illustrate the anticipated growth in 2025, The Center plans to add 43 new positions, which will result in a payroll of approximately 150.

“We need people in all levels of employment,” Lockwood noted. “We are looking for therapists and medical personnel, along with mid-level managers and information technology experts.”

One example of a new position is that of data analyst. “This will allow us to use our resources even more efficiently, while being a good steward of our state and federal funding.

“All of this will result in more services and facilities to accommodate our communities’ needs,” she added. “I strongly believe that we must offer quality services as we continue our holistic approach to supporting people who experience behavioral-health challenges.”

The road to this holistic, integrated approach began in 2022 when The Center got a head-start on becoming a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC). This multi-disciplinary program not only offers a variety of therapies, it also provides support for housing and employment, medication-assisted treatment and specialized services for military veterans.

“We achieved pre-certification in 2023 and full licensure earlier this year, and much of the credit goes to Julie Kramp,” Lockwood said. “Julie has been phenomenal in the role of executive director for eight years and highly focused on building community partnerships. This is crucial to The Center.

“Our management team has been strengthened, which results in more high-quality services for our clients. Julie’s forever stamp is on our organization.”

Kramp said “Wendy is an amazing leader and absolutely the best person to fill this role and guide The Center ever forward as a CCBHC,” Kramp said. “She demonstrates our core values of integrity, dedication, compassion and quality in all that she does. I could not be more excited about the future of our non-profit organization with Wendy’s leadership.”

Kyle Kessler, executive director of the Association of Community Mental Health Centers of Kansas, wrote a letter of recommendation for Lockwood.

The letter states, in part, that Lockwood “is widely considered a leader within our system and is highly respected by her colleagues.”

She has “extensive experience in youth mental health and is one of the most knowledgeable individuals across the system when it comes to case management, a cornerstone of community-based mental-health services.”

In addition, “Wendy is often considered a go-to person, not only for our members but also state officials when input is needed on program and policy issues.”

David Anderson, commissioner for Aging Services at the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services, also wrote a recommendation letter.

“I have always been very impressed with Wendy’s natural leadership skills,” the letter says, noting her “exemplary problem-solving, collaboration and communication skills. I learned early on that when Wendy had something to say at a meeting it was well worth paying attention to.”

Anderson also noted that Lockwood is “honest, compassionate and guided by a strong sense of personal integrity. I believe you are truly fortunate to have such a highly regarded and qualified individual who is fully prepared to lead The Center into the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”

Lockwood started at The Center in 1994 as an adult case manager. Other titles include children’s case manager, as well as management positions in attendant care,

adult and children’s case-management services, community-based services and program development.

Currently, she serves as chief operations officer.

“This experience will serve us well but I am especially proud of my involvement with training community service providers,” she commented. “I work closely with the Association of Community Mental Health Centers of Kansas, while training service providers for the State of Kansas case-management certification.”

Lockwood, who assisted in developing the training curriculum, has been involved in this program since 1998.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1989 at Kansas State University and a master’s in business administration in 2010 at Fort Hays State University.

Great Bend resident named new executive director at The Center

The Golden Belt Community Foundation (GBCF) grants $2,900 to Smoky Hills PBS (SHPBS) to support the Literacy Leadership Program.

The Literacy Leadership Program of Smoky Hills PBS is an effort to engage and inspire children to be ready and eager to learn. There are two components to this program:

· Children’s Programming on Smoky Hills PBS (PBS KIDS) – A portion of the funds we receive from the Golden Belt Community Foundation will go to support safe, non-violent, educational children’s programming every weekday on SHPBS! Parents can be assured that when their kids are in front of PBS KIDS shows, they are LEARNING!

· First Book Club – SHPBS provides FREE books to children enrolled in preschool or head start programs. The funds from the GBCF will provide books to preschoolers enrolled in Barton, Pawnee, Rush, and Stafford counties. These FREE books will be distributed during the Winter, Spring, and Fall of 2025. For some, these will be the only books they own, making this First Book Club a great resource for these communities!

Holy Family School extends an invitation to the public to enjoy their upcoming Christmas programs!

On Dec. 10, the kindergarten through 4th grades will perform at the Parish Center beginning at 7:00. The program portrays the peace and joy the Christmas season brings. The performance is under the direction of Mrs. Ashlee Meyerhoff.

Dec. 18 will be a busy day as our Preschool 4 year olds, under the direction of their teacher, Mrs. Inga Atkinson, will perform their program at 10 a.m. in the Parish Center.

In the evening of Dec. 18, the Holy Family 5th and 6th graders will perform their popular musical entitled “Arrest These Merry Gentlemen” at BCC beginning at 7 p.m. The musical is set in the sleepy town of Bethlehem and features peace officer Joe Sabbath as he investigates reports of rowdy shepherds disrupting the town with “wild stories” about angels and a new born baby. Despite the humorous nature, the play ultimately conveys the importance of the Christmas Story and the joy of sharing the Good News. The musical is under the direction of Mrs. Ashlee Meyerhoff.

Holy Family School Christmas programs scheduled for Dec. 10 and 18

On the morning of his federal trial this week for raping and terrorizing vulnerable Black women in the Kansas City, Kansas neighborhoods he patrolled for 35 years, ex-cop Roger Golubski&nbsp;fatally shot himself.&nbsp;&nbsp;His&nbsp;story, much like last year’s&nbsp;Marion police newsroom raid, is another national black eye for law enforcement in Kansas abusing the public’s trust.

In 1829, Sir Robert Peel coined the phrase “policing by consent” with&nbsp;nine principles&nbsp;for democratic policing while establishing London’s first police force. In a nutshell, we consent to the idea of trusting some members of the community to exercise powers required to keep the peace on behalf of the community. In return, we willingly pledge our cooperation. Police do not serve the state like an occupying army. They serve the people.&nbsp;

This philosophy is foundational in most American police academies. At its core are accountability, transparency, and social ties. When these break, we break.&nbsp;Years of racial disparities for&nbsp;wrongful convictions,&nbsp;incarcerations,&nbsp;excessive force, and&nbsp;lethal shootings&nbsp;culminated in the fateful spring of 2020 when George Floyd became a tragic household name. Anti-police riots spawned a “back the blue” counter movement.&nbsp;People on both sides did not consent to what they were seeing.

As a result, many bipartisan reforms took place from DC to statehouses and city halls to regain the consent of the public – bans on neck restraints and no-knock warrants, body-cam proliferation,&nbsp;de-escalation training, critical response teams with mental health professionals,&nbsp;civilian oversight boards, and ramped-up community policing.&nbsp;None of these have necessarily proven to be blanket panaceas. Amidst local success stories,&nbsp;fatal police shootings&nbsp;have risen along with&nbsp;police killings.&nbsp;Better data&nbsp;on police incidents are shared but lack enough standardization to drive dependable policymaking.

Meanwhile, another proven reform – women in policing – careens into politically charged climates because of DEI implications and&nbsp;questioning women in combat.&nbsp;Part of the debate revolves around the national&nbsp;30X30&nbsp;initiative. 30X30 has sparked awareness on the benefits of women in policing with a goal of increasing representation from 20% to 30% for recruits by 2030. Wichita, Overland Park, and Salina have joined over 200 localities in taking this pledge. However, Topeka’s incoming police chief recently endorsed 30X30 amidst&nbsp;GOP pushback on quotas for women.

Given policing’s&nbsp;staffing crisis, local leaders would be remiss not to make a bigger play for half of the state’s population. After 2020,&nbsp;Wichita&nbsp;was 14% below authorized full-strength,&nbsp;Topeka&nbsp;13%, and&nbsp;Overland Park&nbsp;11%. Also,&nbsp;research&nbsp;shows women police are less apt to use excessive force, perceived as more honest and compassionate, named in fewer complaints/lawsuits and hold strong&nbsp;communication skills&nbsp;- an advantage for a job considered&nbsp;90 percent social work&nbsp;today.

Nationally, 14% of sworn officers are female. Kansas is only 12% with&nbsp;use of force incidents climbing. Two jurisdictions with falling use of force incidents include Junction City and Leavenworth. Curiously, they have two of the highest female officer rates at&nbsp;27%&nbsp;after hitting single digits in 2003. By contrast, the Kansas Highway Patrol added just three female officers since 2003 and currently sit at 6%.

Moving towards a 30% female recruit goal aligns with a representative bureaucracy ideal where credibility, fairness, trust, and performance are heightened as civil servant composition reflects the population composition they serve.&nbsp;

Will our consent be more about climbing 5-foot walls or breaking glass walls?

For the police are us. And we are the police.&nbsp; &nbsp;

 </figure>On the morning of his federal trial this week for raping and terrorizing vulnerable Black women in the Kansas City, Kansas neighborhoods he patrolled for 35 years, ex-cop Roger Golubski&nbsp;fatally shot himself.&nbsp;&nbsp;His&nbsp;story, much like last year’s&nbsp;Marion police newsroom raid, is another national black eye for law enforcement in Kansas abusing the public’s trust.In 1829, Sir Robert Peel coined the phrase “policing by consent” with&nbsp;nine principles&nbsp;for democratic policing while establishing London’s first police force. In a nutshell, we consent to the idea of trusting some members of the community to exercise powers required to keep the peace on behalf of the community. In return, we willingly pledge our cooperation. Police do not serve the state like an occupying army. They serve the people.&nbsp;This philosophy is foundational in most American police academies. At its core are accountability, transparency, and social ties. When these break, we break.&nbsp;Years of racial disparities for&nbsp;wrongful convictions,&nbsp;incarcerations,&nbsp;excessive force, and&nbsp;lethal shootings&nbsp;culminated in the fateful spring of 2020 when George Floyd became a tragic household name. Anti-police riots spawned a “back the blue” counter movement.&nbsp;People on both sides did not consent to what they were seeing.As a result, many bipartisan reforms took place from DC to statehouses and city halls to regain the consent of the public – bans on neck restraints and no-knock warrants, body-cam proliferation,&nbsp;de-escalation training, critical response teams with mental health professionals,&nbsp;civilian oversight boards, and ramped-up community policing.&nbsp;None of these have necessarily proven to be blanket panaceas. On Friday, Dec. 6, a manhole on 19th Street broke causing a hazard in the roadway. The City of Great Bend has a contractor that will be replacing the manhole Monday, Dec. 9. 

For the safety of the crew working and the safety of traffic, the city will have the 3200 block of 19th&nbsp;completely closed at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8. This is the block east of Harrison on 19th by the middle school. Please be aware of the need to avoid or reroute around the area. 

The city is planning for work to take one day and after the repairs are made 19th&nbsp;will be opened back up but there will be barricades in the middle of the street allowing vehicles to pass on each side of the work area. Please be attentive and aware as crews work to make repairs in the area.&nbsp;

$20K Christmas Cash Giveaway - Sign up Today at Miller's of Claflin

Barton Community College presented a check to Fort Riley soldiers last month for $3,250 raised through the September Wounded Warrior Golf Scramble fundraiser.

The annual tournament is held at the Rolling Meadows Golf Course near Fort Riley and all the money goes directly to supporting wounded soldiers at Fort Riley.

Barton golf coach and event organizer Doug Kaiser said that each year, they host 24 teams. The teams are mostly made up of golfers from the Great Bend and Fort Riley areas.

“There are some special moments about the Wounded Warrior tournament,” he said. “You get to meet golfers that are retired military from the Fort Riley area and around the state of Kansas, and they always ask me the day of the next tournament and mark it on their calendars because they want to make sure they return for it.”

Sponsors included the Barton men’s and women’s golf teams, David and Dana Foss, Doug and Michelle Kaiser, Walmart of Junction City, Briggs Motors of Manhattan, and Rolling Meadows Golf Course.

As the 2024 holiday season commences, Fort Hays State University’s annual toy-building event is approaching quickly.

The 35th Annual Fred Ruda’s Teaming up for Tots event is set to take place on Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Center for Applied Technology at Fort Hays State University. This year, volunteers from the community will build over 180 wooden helicopter toys that will be distributed to children in need in our community.

Students in the Department of Applied Technology have designed the toy and all the processes, jigs, and fixtures needed to produce the toys on a mass scale. Community members are asked to volunteer to run a station. Jobs include but aren’t limited to running machinery, moving pieces from one part of the assembly line to another, gluing and assembling parts, sanding, and applying oil finish to the production toys.

“This is one of the best opportunities for our students to give back to the community,” said Zach Pixler, Assistant Professor of Applied Technology. “Not only do they learn more about the manufacturing process, they get to flex their creative muscles a bit, practice critical thinking skills, and see the positive impact that their hard work has on those around them. This year’s helicopter toy incorporates some different materials, so it’s a challenge for our students. I’m excited to see them all come together on our line!”

Building will commence at 9 a.m. and will be completed by lunchtime. Join us for coffee and donuts before the event and pizza after the build. All ages are welcome. No sign-up is necessary; just bring safety glasses and be ready to build.

FHSU’s annual toy building event set for Saturday

RICE COUNTY—One person died in an accident just before 6:30a.m. Friday in Rice County.&nbsp;

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Honda Element driven by Gabriel Herron, 26, Kansas City, Kansas was westbound on U.S. 56 near Just east of 28th Road.

The SUV traveled off the road the right and the driver overcorrected. The vehicle returned to the road, traveled back into the ditch and rolled. Herron was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to&nbsp;Birzer Funeral home. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Kansas man dies after SUV rollover accident

On Thursday, Dec. 5, at approximately 10:44 a.m., officers with the Great Bend Police Department responded to The University of Kansas Health System, 514 Cleveland Street in Great Bend, in reference to a domestic disturbance. 

It was discovered the female half of the altercation, Judy Goodman, age 68, battered the other party using a mop handle. Goodman was placed under arrest for aggravated battery. Goodman was transported to the Barton County Jail where she was booked and held on a $75,000 bond for aggravated battery.

Tenacious D is not just a comedy rock duo featuring Jack Black. It's what new Great Bend High School girls' basketball coach Jade Winter wants to see out of her defense. The Lady Panthers will have the opportunity to display the new defense in front of a home crowd for tonight's season-opener against Salina South. 

"I want to just get after it and get lots of deflections," Winter said. "Even if we don't get a lot of steals, just getting a hand on the ball and deflecting it out of bounds changes the mindset of the offensive team."

Winter was a Class 6A state runner-up as a senior at Derby High School in 2017, playing alongside then-sophomore Kennedy Brown, who would go on to play at Oregon State and Duke. After high school, Winter played at Fort Scott Community College and Park University in Kansas City before earning a degree from Wichita State University. While attending graduate school, Winter moved to her family's farm in Bison where she was recruited to coach at Otis-Bison High School. She wants to bring a similar coaching style to Great Bend.

"I really like to play fast basketball," she said. "Fast, aggressive, we're getting up and down the floor. If we don't have to run an offense when we get down there, great. That's what I like the most. I'm really excited we get a shot clock this year. I just think the game is going to speed up so much and it's going to be more of that college feel."

Winter spent three years at Otis-Bison and has been a MAYB coach since 2019. She continues to coach the Marion Heim's Dream Team.

Winter ready to lead Lady Panthers after three years at Otis-Bison

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring not even a mouse. Hold on just a minute!

The holidays can be a time of extra stress – money flying out the door, too many places to be in too little time, schedules are upset, foods that we don’t eat every day, and just general chaos!

Plan ahead now for some inexpensive fun ways to just be together. Drag out the books – share one that your child loved when they were small and read it together using your best character voices. Make a trip to the library to pick out a new book – every library has great librarians who would love to make reading recommendations for you!

When is the last time you played “crazy eights”, “old maid”, or had an energetic game of Uno? In addition to using skills of taking turns and being cooperative, youth practice counting and paying attention to details.

Have you put a jigsaw puzzle together as a family? Unless you do these often, don’t start with a 1500 piece complicated one. Pick an easy one that everyone can participate in. Set up a card table in a corner and you may be surprised how often someone stops by it to add a couple of pieces.

Be silly and dance – turn on some music and dance in the living room! It’s good exercise for the body and the brain. Show off those 90’s dance moves and learn a few from your kids. It’s OK if people think we look silly because we are having fun!

Go outside! Take a walk, play kickball, throw a disc or snowball. I grew up on one of the best sledding hills in my town. Even if we only had time for one or two runs, we were throwing ourselves on a sled and racing down the hill. My parents were regular participants in this craziness!

Hold on just a minute!The holidays can be a time of extra stress – money flying out the door, too many places to be in too little time, schedules are upset, foods that we don’t eat every day, and just general chaos!Plan ahead now for some inexpensive fun ways to just be together. Drag out the books – share one that your child loved when they were small and read it together using your best character voices. Make a trip to the library to pick out a new book – every library has great librarians who would love to make reading recommendations for you!When is the last time you played “crazy eights”, “old maid”, or had an energetic game of Uno? In addition to using skills of taking turns and being cooperative, youth practice counting and paying attention to details.Have you put a jigsaw puzzle together as a family? Unless you do these often, don’t start with a 1500 piece complicated one. Pick an easy one that everyone can participate in. Set up a card table in a corner and you may be surprised how often someone stops by it to add a couple of pieces.Be silly and dance – turn on some music and dance in the living room! It’s good exercise for the body and the brain. Show off those 90’s dance moves and learn a few from your kids. It’s OK if people think we look silly because we are having fun!Go outside! Take a walk, play kickball, throw a disc or snowball. I grew up on one of the best sledding hills in my town. Even if we only had time for one or two runs, we were throwing ourselves on a sled and racing down the hill. BERAN: Holiday activities...planning ahead

On December 5, at about 4:45 p.m., Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputies stopped a Chevy Malibu on K-156 Highway near Claflin. The Malibu was registered to a known wanted person, Nathan Manley. Manley, age 49 of Holyrood, had multiple warrants from various jurisdictions including aggravated escape from custody from Rice County. 

Deputies identified Manley as the backseat passenger, and he was placed under arrest. The driver of the vehicle identified as Dennis Streiner, age 47 of Great Bend, had been contacted earlier in the day and questioned as to the whereabouts of Nathan Manley. Streiner was also placed under arrest for “obstruction of the apprehension of a wanted felon.” Further investigation at the scene revealed methamphetamine in the vehicle.

Both Manley and Streiner were transported to the Barton County Jail without incident. Manley was booked on a Barton County warrant for failed to appear [no bond] and a Rice County warrant for aggravated escape of custody with a $10,000 bond. Manley was booked on requested additional charges of possession of methamphetamine.

Streiner was booked on requested charges of obstructing the apprehension of wanted felon and possession of methamphetamine as well as no valid Kansas driver’s license. He’s being held in lieu of a $10,000 bond.

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (12/5)

The always popular Santa’s Workshop, hosted by the Great Bend Recreation
Commission, is set to entertain children of all ages Monday, Dec. 9. From
6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the City Auditorium, children can participate in
holiday-themed booths, visit Santa Claus and give big red their Christmas list.


Great Bend Rec Enrichment Director Garet Fitzpatrick said there is a lot of
pride in hosting the two-hour event each year.


"For the Rec Center and a two-hour program, it's probably our largest event by far," said Fitzpatrick. "It's crazy and a lot of work. We basically start a year in advance. You just remember all the people that come and all the smiles on the faces of kids and adults even."

High school students, civic organizations and several community volunteers help
transform the City Auditorium into a Christmas paradise for children with
games, prizes and treats. 

Fitzpatrick said the Burnside Room inside the Rec
Center has activities for smaller children.


"The City Auditorium is amazing and a lot of fun on the night of the event, but for some of your younger kids, it might be a little overwhelming," said Fitzpatrick. "Check out the Burnside Room. That will be for the three and four year-olds...your younger kids."

The program, designed for preschool through 6th graders, is now in
its 28th year. Families should enter through the doors on the
southwest corner of the auditorium.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Students from the Great Bend High School Student Organizations, BCC Softball Team, Barton County Sheriff’s Department, Great Bend Fire/EMS Department, Great Bend Police Department, and the Great Bend Recreation Commission will be helping with this event. 

The USD 428 Parents as Teachers, Parent Teacher Resource Center - PTRC, Sunflower Early Education Center, and Great Bend Public Library Children’s Department will be providing a mini–Santa’s Workshop in the Burnside Room in the Recreation Center designed for preschoolers. For this event, please enter through the northeast door of the Burnside Room.
