The drought monitor report as of Tuesday, December 24 is unchanged from last week. The six to ten-day outlook (December 31 to January 4) indicates a near normal for temperatures and precipitation. The eight to fourteen-day outlook (January 2 to 8) indicates near normal for temperatures and a 33 to 40% chance of leaning above normal for precipitation.

Last week was a review of some of the top Ag stories for 2024. Today, what are some of the more like major stories for 2025 on agriculture. Just some and with a focus on Kansas.

· For Kansas, especially the western two-thirds, the groundwater issue will continue to be front and center. We will know in a month or so from the Kansas Geological Survey how well levels fared, but the are expected to have declined further. 2024 has seen renewed concern from all parties but what will it translate into. Many are focused on the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge and area irrigators but he reality is this is being payed out across the state. This is an old dilemma that goes back decades. K-State did a great deal of work in the 1990s with WaterPack and GMD 5 and made recommendations but then we entered a wet spell.

· The weather is always a concern in the Great Plains and 2025 is no exception. We are in much better shape than this time a year ago but the long-term outlook is fuzzy at best. And it appears 2024 will be the warmest year for the planet on record. On the plus side, the 2025 wheat crop overall is much, much better now than over the last few years.

· One more state of Kansas item is the even larger super-majorities in Topeka. With further tax cuts on the agenda, what effect will this have for all levels of government and for K-State serving its research an extension mission?

· Something more nationwide is we enter 2025 with a new President and with the GOP in control of the House and Senate. For everyone, not just agriculture, Congress has until mid-March before the latest continuing resolution expires. Just prior to Christmas they did provide some aid to producers (ten billion dollars) but it’s a drop in the bucket. In particular trouble are producers affected by hurricanes. We still don’t have a Farm Bill and even with a majority in both Houses of Congress, there is a divide among the caucuses as to what it should look like. This is particularly true with the SNAP and other nutrition assistance programs. The Farm Bill should have been passed in 2023.

· The last of many potential stories is the potential tariff wars with Canada, Mexico, China, and even the European Union. Just the mention of this possibility Since early November is creating rumbles in the ag export market. The U.S. already has a deficit regarding ag commodities for a variety of reasons. And many don’t realize how much of what you eat has an import connection – especially fruits and vegetables. For production agriculture many inputs and technology are produced outside the country and export markets are a key for Kansas producers.

On Sunday, Dec. 29, at approximately 8:46 p.m., officers with the Great Bend Police Department were dispatched to a domestic disturbance in the 2800 block of 24th&nbsp;Street. 

Prior to the officers arrival, it was reported that Yadira Jimenez, age 22, had caused damage to property and had unlawfully forced entry into an occupied residence. Officers located Jimenez inside the residence and took her into custody. Jimenez was arrested and transported to the Barton County Jail in lieu of bond for aggravated burglary and interference with law enforcement officer.

No fouls are necessary for a pair of upcoming free-throw shooting contests.

The 52nd Annual Elks Hoop Shoot is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11 in the Russell Junior-Senior High School gymnasium. Pratt-Skyline High School will also host an event that Saturday at 10 a.m. The national contest is for kids age 8-13. More than three million participants across the nation entered last year's contest, which is broken down into age categories of 8-9, 10-11, and 12-13.

Each contestant will shoot 25 free throws. The boys and girl in each age group will advance to the district competition held in Pratt on Jan. 25. Winners of a later national competition will have their names inscribed on the Elks National Hoop Shoot plaque a the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

The Knights of Columbus will host its Annual Free Throw Championship for boys and girls ages 9 through 14, at noon on Sunday, Jan. 12 at the Hoisington Activity Center. The event is free and open to all area youth, but a birth certificate is required for age verification, The contest provides an athletic outlet and encourages the values of sportsmanship and healthy competition. Last year the oil and gas industry set a record for mergers and acquisitions, an eye-popping $192 BILLION in transactions. But like a lot of records in the industry it won't last long. With hundreds of transactions this year, the total through September is nearly $124 BILLION, and there are still several large deals on the table.

US Crude production dropped to the second best weekly tally ever. The Energy Information Administration reports US crude output dropped by 19,000 barrels a day from last week's all-time high, but still stands as the second-best weekly report ever. The average is 13,585,000 barrels per day, marking only the sixth week over 13.5 million.

Commercial crude inventories dropped by more than four million barrels to just under 417 million barrels. EIA says stockpiles are down five percent from the five-year seasonal average.

EIA took delivery on 300,000 barrels for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. The SPR now total 393.3 million barrels, an increase of 40 million barrels in the last year.

The Energy Information Administration says US natural gas production set a record over 113 BILLION cubic feet per day last year, with five states pumping 70% of that. Texas, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, West Virginia and New Mexico are the top producers of natural gas in this country. EIA says natural gas consumption rose 1% to an annual high last year. Electricity generation was the chief driver of the increase. Consumption of natural gas at power plants averaged over 35 BILLION cubic feet per day, or about 40% of US consumption.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service shows 25 active rigs, with nine in the eastern half of the state, which is up two, and 16 in Western Kansas, which is down one. Two operators in Ellis County have suspended drilling for the holidays, and are expected to resume next week.

The year-end total for new oil and gas fields in Kansas is down by half from last year. At its final meeting of the year, the Kansas Geological Society last week recognized and named six new oil-and-gas fields in Kansas. That brings the year-end total to 28 new fields, compared to 57 last year.

The US imports more crude-oil than we export, by 2.7 million barrels a day. We export more petroleum products than we import by over five million barrels a day.

Domestic crude-oil imports averaged 6.5 million barrels a day in the week through December 20th, down 178-thousand daily barrels from the week before. That's up nearly 200-thousand barrels a day from a year ago and two years ago. EIA reports four week average imports are down more than two percent from last year at nearly 6.6 million barrels a day.

Crude exports dropped by nearly 1.2 million barrels a day from a week ago to 3.7 million daily barrels. That's up 200-thousand from last year, but down 300-thousand daily barrels from two years ago. Four-week average exports are up three percent from last year.

Output in the number-three crude-producing state dropped to 1.17 million barrels a day in October. Permits, completions, and rig counts are all up. The North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources reports the state had 19,334 producing wells in October, an all time record. October's gas-capture statistic dropped to 94%, meaning six percent of the natural gas produced at oil wells is either vented into the air or burned off at the well head. Natural Gas production was down four percent month-over-month.

Huge production in Texas has historically been tied to huge energy employment. But those numbers are dropping. The Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners Association (TIPRO) said its November report ends five straight months of job growth. Employment in the upstream sector, before crude gets to the refinery, slipped to 194,400, down 1,500 positions compared to October.&nbsp; Jobs in extraction fell by 600, while oilfield service hiring slid by 900 jobs.

A new energy watchdog in Colorado says a criminal probe may be in order, after they uncovered hundreds of fraudulent pollution reports filed in the last five years by some big names in the industry. Colorado’s Energy and Carbon Management Commission says contractors for Chevron and Occidental Petroleum submitted reports with bogus data for at least 344 oil and gas wells across the state, painting a misleading picture of their pollution levels. According to the report, consultants for a third company also filed forms with falsified information for an unspecified number of wells. Some of the reports obscured the levels of dangerous contaminants in nearby soils, including arsenic and benzene among other pollutants.&nbsp;&nbsp;

United Way of Central Kansas announces recipients of 2024 Impact Grants

Registration is now available for a four-part workshop series aimed at helping Midwest farm families develop succession plans for passing on or leaving the business.

The series, Leaving a Lasting Legacy for Midwestern Farm Women, will be available at 63 sites in three states, as well as offered online. It is being produced through a partnership between extension professionals at Kansas State University, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Purdue University.

Registration is available online for those wishing to attend in-person and costs $60 through Jan. 12, which includes meals and educational materials. The fee increases to $75 after Jan. 12. Organizers say there is an online option available for $75, but “highly encourage” participants to attend in-person due to the value of group discussions with other participants.

The workshops will be held on successive Tuesdays, beginning Jan. 21 and 28, and continuing on Feb. 4 and 11.

“The focus of the workshops is to help people figure out how to set up their succession plan and find the resources they need to implement it on their farm,” said LaVell Winsor, a K-State farm analyst.

This year’s workshops continue a tradition of educational classes for women in agriculture from K-State’s Department of Agricultural Economics, which hosted a series on farm finances in 2020, risk management on the farm in 2022, and land leasing in 2023.

“Succession planning has become a hot button topic, though it should have been that way forever,” said Ashlee Westerhold, director of K-State’s Office of Farm and Ranch Transition. “In agriculture, we’re always in a state of transition. According to data from the U.S. Census, 70% of U.S. farmland will transfer to the next generation within 20 years.

“The impact of farms transitioning – either successfully to the next generation or unsuccessfully in the form of a land and estate sale – has implications for rural communities and rural prosperity,” Westerhold said.

The topics that will be covered in the four-part workshop series include:

· Family communication around estate and transition planning.

· Financial aspects of estate and transition plans.

· Legal aspects of putting your plan into place.

“We’ll also talk about how to pick a provider for all of those pieces,” Winsor said. “The goal is to give people the tools they need to succeed. They can take them home, work on the plan with their families and start to put their succession plan together.”

The workshop is part of K-State’s Women in Ag series, though all sessions are available to all people.

 </figure>Registration is now available for a four-part workshop series aimed at helping Midwest farm families develop succession plans for passing on or leaving the business.The series, Leaving a Lasting Legacy for Midwestern Farm Women, will be available at 63 sites in three states, as well as offered online. It is being produced through a partnership between extension professionals at Kansas State University, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Purdue University.Registration is available online for those wishing to attend in-person and costs $60 through Jan. 12, which includes meals and educational materials. The fee increases to $75 after Jan. 12. Organizers say there is an online option available for $75, but “highly encourage” participants to attend in-person due to the value of group discussions with other participants.The workshops will be held on successive Tuesdays, beginning Jan. 21 and 28, and continuing on Feb. 4 and 11.“The focus of the workshops is to help people figure out how to set up their succession plan and find the resources they need to implement it on their farm,” said LaVell Winsor, a K-State farm analyst.This year’s workshops continue a tradition of educational classes for women in agriculture from K-State’s Department of Agricultural Economics, which hosted a series on farm finances in 2020, risk management on the farm in 2022, and land leasing in 2023.“Succession planning has become a hot button topic, though it should have been that way forever,” said Ashlee Westerhold, director of K-State’s Office of Farm and Ranch Transition. “In agriculture, we’re always in a state of transition. BOOR: Great Bend hosting 4-part workshop aimed at helping farm families

Anecia Beaman thought she could handle her son’s “not-good decisions” all on her own.

The 12-year-old was “mouthing off, stealing things, name-calling and becoming physical with his siblings,” Beaman recalled. “And it was escalating.”

Beaman, a 31-year-old Stafford resident, knew that she could contact Juvenile Services anytime. “But I just wanted to handle it myself. Actually, I was sweeping the problem under the rug.”

Then, one day Casey Rowland at Juvenile Services called Beaman. As Family Engagement advocate and leader of Parent Project classes, Rowland was following up with Beaman who had taken the classes previously.

“Casey asked if I was doing okay and I said, well, no,” Beaman said. “She had mentioned to the class that we could reach out no matter what. But I just hadn’t done that.”

Since the situation at home had “gotten to the point that I had no control, I had to involve the cops,” Beaman related. “That was the hardest call I ever had to make.

“Casey had said she would always be here if you have to make that call. And she was. She was with me every step of the way.”

Beaman, who recently finished her second series of Parent Project sessions, remembered her earlier experiences.

At the beginning of the first session, she thought it would be another “boring” parenting class. “But I quickly learned this is kind of cool. They are not judgmental and you can be yourself. Casey and I clicked right off the bat.

“And now I know that the doors are never closed. If six months from now I need a refresher course, I will go to Parent Project again.”

Unfortunately, the Beaman’s son had to be temporarily removed from the home. He is one of Beaman’s 10 children, ages 2 through 12.

Rowland noted that “I tell all my parents that it sometimes gets harder before it gets easier. Parent Project may be the connection needed to make the breakthrough for the support to gain success. We have to start somewhere and Parent Project is a good beginning.

“The classes are not the answer to every problem,” she continued. “But it is often a valuable starting point when a family is in turmoil.”

In addition to parenting advice, Beaman was introduced to Rise Up when Amy Ferguson, program coordinator, spoke to a recent class; Ferguson is a regular presenter during Parent Project.

Rise Up is a task force under the umbrella of the Central Kansas Partnership. One of its goals is to help people with Substance-Use Disorder (SUD) find the path to recovery.

Beaman is interested in becoming involved in Rise Up because she has been in recovery for almost nine years. “I am not sure what the possibilities are,” Beaman said. “But I would like to become an SUD counselor in the future.”

Parent Project entails eight consecutive Tuesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Juvenile Services office, 1800 12th in Great Bend. Zoom arrangements may be made for out-of-towners.

Registration is preferred but walk-ins are welcome at the first meeting, which is Tuesday, Jan. 21.

“We encourage parents and guardians to consider these classes,” Rowland said. “But I tell participants right up front that if you can’t stand brutal honesty this might not be the class for you.

“However, we will work with anyone who is willing to listen, while learning from other parents. We want to build a rapport with you and work to the benefit of your whole family. Parent Project is not a one-and-done deal; you have my attention anytime you need it. It really does take a village.”

Stafford mother shares Parent Project experiences; next classes begin Jan. 21

On Thursday, Dec. 26, at approximately 4:48 a.m., an officer with the Great Bend Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a black Nissan Sentra in the 800 Block of Macarthur Road for a moving violation. 

During the stop, Barton County Dispatch advised that the driver, Jade Blair, age 29, had a suspended driver's license and had an active warrant out of Douglas County, KS. 

Blair was placed under arrest, and during a search, a white crystal substance was located. A subsequent test revealed that the substance showed a positive response for methamphetamine. 

Barton County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Menta was deployed and alerted to the odor of illegal narcotics in the vehicle. A search of the vehicle was conducted and during the search officers located drug paraphernalia, methamphetamine, and marijuana.&nbsp; 

Blair was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine, driving while suspended and for her Douglas County warrant.&nbsp; Blair was transported to the Barton County Jail where she was booked in lieu of bond and awaits extradition for her warrant.

Spending New Year's Day in jail is no way to begin 2025. Driving under the influence may result in a suspended driver's license and higher insurance premiums. It can also ruin lives. Director of Promotions Becca Fletcher said that's why Eagle Media is again partnering with the Great Bend Police Department for the New Year's Eve Taxi.

"On New Year's Eve, give them a call from 6 p.m. until 3 a.m. at (620) 639-8294," Fletcher said. "All you have to do is make a $10 donation. An officer from the Great Bend Police Department will pick you up and drive you home. The great thing is, the proceeds benefit the Kids' Christmas Gift Fund."

A $10 donation, per person, is still much cheaper than paying fines and fees associated with a DUI arrest. The taxi will drop residents off anywhere in Barton County.

Governor Laura Kelly announced on Monday more than $1.5 million will be given to 20 organizations to support efforts aimed at preventing family, domestic, and dating violence, providing critical services to survivors of domestic violence, and increasing safe parenting time for non-custodial parents with their children. This funding comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA) and the State Access and Visitation Program (SAVP).  

“It is essential that those impacted by domestic violence have the support and resources needed to heal and rebuild their lives,” Governor Laura Kelly said. “These investments not only provide aid to survivors of domestic violence but also aim to prevent future incidents from occurring.” 

The Family Crisis Center, which provides services in multiple counties throughout Central Kansas, will receive $60,561. Ellis County was awarded $80,356 for domestic and sexual violence services, and BrightHouse in Reno County was awarded $59,159.

The FVPSA grant funds enable organizations to deliver a wide range of services. These services include outreach and education aimed at preventing family violence, emergency shelter for victims and their dependents, support groups, crisis intervention services, advocacy for obtaining protection from abuse orders, court accompaniment, and transportation assistance. The funding also supports initiatives to spread awareness to schools, communities, and families on how to stop violence before it begins. 

The SAVP grant funds provide critical funding to support children and families in need of supervised exchange or visitation services. They also enable programs to offer on-site as well as therapeutic supervision, monitored exchanges, referrals to additional resources, and educational parenting classes designed to strengthen family relationships.

Four new nature-based designs also double as a donation to the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks to help fund conservation efforts across the state. Barton County Treasurer Jim Jordan said the tags are available with a one-time $40 application fee and a $50 renewal fee each year.

"If you get the fish one, which goes to the fisheries, $35 of that $50 annual fee goes to the fisheries," he said. "The other $15 is your park pass. You'll no longer get the little sticker on your windshield. It's your license plate now, which is your park pass."

Purchasing the tag featuring a deer will help support wildlife conservation, the tag featuring a bird will raise money for non-game species, and the tag with campers will raise money to improve state parks. The $50 annual fee is tax-deductible. The $15 annual park permits are still available for those not wanting to purchase a tag.

Along with the special plate fees, standard renewal taxes must also be paid. The wildlife tags may be purchased at any time during the year, and handicapped tags are available. Vehicle owners wishing to switch back to a normal tag may do so upon paying registration fees the following year.

Smoky Hills PBS welcomes the premiere of the 20th Season of Doctors on Call hosted by Jenna Miller. The live viewer call-in show will begin airing its new season on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. This milestone season continues the tradition of delivering expert medical advice, timely health topics, and answers to viewers’ most pressing health questions.

Since its inception, Doctors on Call has been a trusted source of information for communities across Kansas, offering viewers the opportunity to hear from medical professionals on a variety of topics ranging from chronic conditions to preventative care.

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (12/27 - 12/29)

Last Thursday afternoon, Fuller Industries Quality Control Laboratory technicians Pookie Blecha and Randy Liederbach removed small, pastel-colored bottles from a stack of boxes and carefully organized them on shelves in the QC lab.

The containers, marked with cryptic labels containing chemical formulas, joined those on other racks lining the walls and others stashed in second-floor rooms.

These are product quality control samples, known as retains, held in case customers have questions. They are kept for three years due to Federal Drug Administration guidelines.

The samples handled Thursday were of products made by the Canadian manufacturer whose operations were merged into the Great Bend facility.

“We are now retaining their retains,” Blecha said, noting there are glass and plastic vials stashed in several nooks and crannies.

But they don’t mind, she said. Assuring quality and consistency is a cornerstone of Fuller’s commercial and industrial cleaning product business.

The samples, organized according to their formulations, are used to track the viscosity (thickness), pH levels (acidity or basicity) and other aspects of each product, Liederbach said. They are shaken and tested periodically while in storage.

“There is a lot that goes into this,” said Joe Mann, Fuller’s vice president and general manager. “It is all pure science. There are extremely stringent regulations, but we also hold ourselves to a very high standard.”

But when people think about Fuller, they may not realize all that actually goes on at the plant west of Great Bend, he said.
