Tim Weiser and Ray Bechard, a couple of Great Bend boys,
were back in town this past weekend. 

Weiser recently retired as the Deputy
Commissioner of the Big 12 Conference and Bechard recently retired as the head
volleyball coach at the University of Kansas. After spending time together in
the dorms at Barton Community College as student athletes, playing competitive
matches of ping pong, Weiser joked the two of them are proof things will turn
out okay for anyone. 

Bechard presented for Weiser as the former Barton baseball
player was inducted into the Barton Sports Hall of Fame this past Saturday.



"I really did not have a whole lot of motivation for the academic side of life," said Weiser. "I was more interested in playing baseball. Having a chance to play at Barton and stay at home was a perfect thing for me. Frankly, I was not ready as a freshman to leave Great Bend."


Weiser pitched for the Cougars from 1976 to 1978 and went on to play at Emporia
State University. His goal upon graduation was to become an academic advisor for
student athletes and was able to begin that career at Wichita State University.
With changes at WSU, Weiser was introduced to the athletics side more which
started his path as athletic director at Austin Peay University, Eastern
Michigan University and Colorado State University. 

Weiser was excited to get
closer to home when he accepted the athletic director position at Kansas State
University where he served from 2001 to 2008.



"That athletic director job is a tough job," said Weiser. "It's way tougher now than it was then. I really realized early on that it was being able to stand up and take responsibility when either coaches or student athletes made a mistake. They could be very lonely jobs at times, but I can still remember the football game in Kansas City where K-State beat Oklahoma and that will forever be one of the greatest memories."


Weiser then served as the Big 12 Conference Deputy Commissioner from 2008 until
his recent retirement last December. Weiser is also a member of the Great Bend
High School Hall of Fame.



Lacy (Frees) Draznik and Natchapol Srinoon were also inducted into the 2025 class
for the Barton Sports Hall of Fame.

From Jobs for America's Graduates - Kansas (Great Bend High School)...

Leadership students from Great Bend High School's JAG-K program enjoyed a whirlwind tour of the Topeka Capitol during JAG-K Day at the
Capitol.  Our students met with Representative Sherri Brantley and Senator Tory Marie Blew
to speak about JAG, why it's important to have in our schools, and how JAG has helped
them. We were also fortunate to not only see the new Rebel Women Mural by Phyllis J.
Garibay-Coon but also meet her in person! Students had the opportunity to learn about the
history of the Capitol during a historical tour and also braved the steep 296 steps to the top
of the dome. The fog put a damper on the view from the catwalk, but the history lesson and
experience was epic!

February was a busy time for our leadership students!  They also spoke with the USD 428
Board of Education about how JAG has helped prepare them for successful futures.

JAG students are diligently preparing for their regional Career Development Conference
(CDC).  Selected students will be moving on to the regional competition in the Career
Preparation, Employability Skills, Prepared Speaking, Financial Literacy, and Creative
Decision Making events.

FFA Week February 15 - 22

The Great Bend City Council Tuesday night moved forward with the
purchase of a $1.59 million ladder truck for the fire department. Great Bend
Fire Chief Brent Smith said the current model is getting close to aging out and
its safety limitations are a concern for the future.


The department’s vehicle replacement plan scheduled the ladder truck to be
replaced in 2025. In 2022, staff recognized they would not have enough money
saved to replace the truck by 2025, so they extended the project date by two
years. Because of inflation, the department also found out they would not have
enough money to complete the purchase in 2027.


Smith stated with the department’s current 2004 model, they are starting to see
maintenance issues with the breaks, turbo and air leaks.


"That truck is scheduled for a 15-year life expectancy," said Smith. "At the end of 15 years, it can be completely rebuilt with a pump and ladder. That rebuild can give you 10 more years out of the truck until it officially has to be retired. This truck is a 2004, so we're 21 years into that, and it hasn't had its 15-year rebuild done, so we're three and a half to four years away of it being retired anyway."

The Fire Department’s apparatus committee found a Rosenbauer ladder truck to be
built that could be delivered by late 2026, tentatively in August, and save the
city two years of inflation, roughly 7% to 10% annually. 


Currently, with ladder truck’s 75' ladder, the Great Bend Fire Department
cannot get to the top of Holiday Inn hotel. Smith said staff struggles to get
to the fourth floor of the Zarah building downtown and if there are vehicles
parked on the side of the street it is difficult to reach a third floor of a
building. With a new hotel coming on 10th Street and downtown lofts
being constructed, Smith said the new truck will include a 109' ladder. 


"Especially with the new loft apartments going in downtown, my biggest fear is we would have people trapped inside and couldn't get them out," said Smith. "We can replace buildings but that's my biggest fear is not getting people out."

The council approved the bid from Hays Fire Equipment for the ladder truck
costing $1,590,023. Funds for the purchase will come from the half-cent sales tax, $1.25 million in reserves for the truck and $275,000 scheduled to be set aside for the truck in 2026.

Smith said rough estimates on selling the 2004 model could
garner $80,000.

Great Bend combating safety concerns with $1.59 million fire truck

One of the more popular events each year at Party in the Park in Great
Bend is the mud volleyball tournament. The dirty, good time begins in the morning
and brings 1,000 to 2,000 extra people to the outdoor festival each year in
August. 

After the City of Great Bend installed a $680,000 splash pad on the
north side of Veterans Memorial Park last spring, there was concern of damaging
the splash pad and its filters from muddy citizens. Great Bend Public Lands
Director Scott Keeler said there was also the issue of the mud pits being an
eyesore the rest of the year even when the city tried to reseed the area for
grass.


"What we ran into was timing," said Keeler. "With Party in the Park being in August...with that area being heavy clay, by the time we get it drained down and level it, we're usually fighting the rains of September and October. We basically run out of time to plant warm-weather grass back in there. We've planted ryegrass a few times, but even the premium doesn't survive the winter and if it does survive the geese clean it off."

The mud volleyball tournament was moved to the fairgrounds last summer but
along with receiving several complaints, city officials saw a significant drop
in attendance for the festival at Vets Park. The Great Bend City Council
discussed moving the tournament to the vacant Amber Meadows subdivision lots,
just north of Vets Park. 
The council voted in favor of bringing back the mud volleyball to its original
location, just west of the splash pad. 

The city will install water irrigation
and hydroseed the area following the tournament to make the area look better.


"I think it is doable," said Keeler. "Water is going to be the bigger issue and continuing to build it up instead of digging it down. We want to be able to break the walls, drain it down and put it back together."

Party in the Park is held the second Saturday in August and also includes a car
show, wet/dry parade, inflatable water zones, entertainment and a concert.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

and brings 1,000 to 2,000 extra people to the outdoor festival each year in
August. After the City of Great Bend installed a $680,000 splash pad on the
north side of Veterans Memorial Park last spring, there was concern of damaging
the splash pad and its filters from muddy citizens. Great Bend Public Lands
Director Scott Keeler said there was also the issue of the mud pits being an
eyesore the rest of the year even when the city tried to reseed the area for
grass.
"What we ran into was timing," said Keeler. "With Party in the Park being in August...with that area being heavy clay, by the time we get it drained down and level it, we're usually fighting the rains of September and October. We basically run out of time to plant warm-weather grass back in there. We've planted ryegrass a few times, but even the premium doesn't survive the winter and if it does survive the geese clean it off."The mud volleyball tournament was moved to the fairgrounds last summer but
along with receiving several complaints, city officials saw a significant drop
in attendance for the festival at Vets Park. The Great Bend City Council
discussed moving the tournament to the vacant Amber Meadows subdivision lots,
just north of Vets Park. 
The council voted in favor of bringing back the mud volleyball to its original
location, just west of the splash pad. The city will install water irrigation
and hydroseed the area following the tournament to make the area look better.
"I think it is doable," said Keeler. "Water is going to be the bigger issue and continuing to build it up instead of digging it down. We want to be able to break the walls, drain it down and put it back together."Party in the Park is held the second Saturday in August and also includes a car
show, wet/dry parade, inflatable water zones, entertainment and a concert.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

A Jetmore radiologic technologist voluntarily surrendered his license on Monday in lieu of revocation after being convicted of sex crimes with a child.

Anthony R. Sherrill, a radiologic technologist, was convicted on Jan. 5, 2024, in Johnson County District Court of two counts of sexual exploitation of a child. He was sentenced to 34 months in prison on each count to be served concurrently, according to the consent order from the Kansas Board of Healing Arts.

His sentences were suspended, and he was placed on 36 months of supervised probation, followed by lifetime post-release supervision.

On April 17, 2024, Sherrill was convicted in Edwards County District Court of one count of aggravated endangering a child, according to the consent order. He was sentenced to 15 months in prison with 36 months of supervised probation followed by 12 months of post-release supervision.

The felony convictions subject him to discipline by the Kansas Board of Healing Arts.&nbsp;

According to the consent order, Sherill waived his rights to dispute the proceeding before the board.

Sherrill had been a licensed&nbsp;radiologic technologist in Kansas since 2013.

Break the ice with steps to combat winter weather

An abandoned structure caught on fire early Wednesday
morning as members of the Great Bend Fire Department were dispatched to the 200
block of Pine Street in Great Bend.


Crews received the fire call at 2:59 a.m. and found the structure fully
involved in fire with flames coming through the roof. Firefighters had to take
a defensive stand on the fire with multiple lines deployed. Crews were also
dealing with -20 to -30-degree wind chills. Due to weather conditions mutual aid
was requested from the Ellinwood Fire Department.

Crews were on scene for approximately 2.5 hours. 
The cause of the fire is under investigation with the State Fire Marshals
office called in to assist in the investigation. 


Other responding agencies included the Great Bend Police Department, Wheatland
Electric and Kansas Gas.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Having everything under one roof has been a nice change for USD 428. During last Monday's board of education meeting, JoAnn Blevins, director of teaching and learning for USD 428, said the annual preschool and kindergarten pre-enrollment event is scheduled for Wednesday, April 16, at the Little Panthers Preschool and District Education Center, 1809 24th Street in Great Bend. 

"The time is changed," she said. "We're going to do 5-7:30 p.m. and the location is changed. We're going to have it here in this building rather than at the Events Center. We're in a really great position where we can host that now."

Parents with children already enrolled in Little Panthers Preschool can pre-enroll during parent-teacher conferences this week. On April 16, both sides of the building will be open for enrollment.

"The preschool side will be open and we'll have the new preschoolers go to that side of the building to check it out as they pre-enroll," said Blevins. "The kindergarten pre-enrollment will be here in the board room."

Little Panthers Preschool is for children ages three and four years old.

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (2/18)

Most gardeners think soil testing only determines nutrient deficiencies, but the tests also help gardeners understand whether the soil contains adequate nutrients. Basic tests check the soil’s pH, as well as the phosphorus and potassium levels.

“Most of the lawn and garden soil tests that come out of our soil-testing lab (at Kansas State University) show more than adequate levels of both phosphorus and potassium,” K-State horticultural expert Cynthia Domenghini said. “If those nutrients are not needed, applying them is a waste of money and can be a source of pollution.”

Domenghini urges gardeners to test their garden’s soil before beginning spring gardening, particularly if the soil hasn’t been tested in several years. To do so, she says, take a sample from multiple locations in the garden and lawn. Samples should be taken at a depth between the surface and eight inches, depending on the area being sampled. Next, mix the samples together to total one pint of soil.

“A soil test determines fertility problems, not other conditions that may exist, such as poor drainage, poor soil structure, soil borne diseases or insects, chemical contaminants or damage,” Domenghini said. “All of these conditions may reduce plant performance but cannot be evaluated by a soil test.”

Domenghini recommends submitting dry soil samples, as wet soil has different precautions.

“Wet soil samples should be air-dried before being submitted for testing,” Domenghini said. “Do not use artificial means of drying such as an oven or microwave as such treatment may result in inaccurate readings of nutrient levels.”

Soil tests should be used as a tool to identify nutrient deficiencies, Domenghini said, but often they do not tell the whole story of other factors affecting plant growth.

Additional factors that can affect plant growth include: ·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Not enough sun. ·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Poor soil physical characteristics. ·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Walnut trees (walnuts give off a natural herbicide that interferes with the growth of some plants, such as tomatoes). ·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Tree roots. ·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Shallow soils. ·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Improper watering.

BOOR: The importance of soil testing for gardeners

Growing up on a farm in Ellinwood, Barton Community College was always a
choice for Lacy (Frees) Draznik after high school. Her passion for dance took
her initially to Oklahoma State University, but after a change in OSU’s dance
program, Lacy was recruited back to Barton County. 

With a continued successful
career in dance following her 2002-2003 year at the college, Draznik was
inducted into the Barton Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday.


"It's an honor that dance is being recognized," said Draznik. "It's an honor that the dance community is being recognized because they do so much for dance and cheer here. I still have a hard time telling people I'm a Hall of Famer, but I'll take it."

Draznik became the first dance or cheer member to be inducted into the Barton
Sports Hall of Fame. 


Following her degree at Wichita State University, Draznik began her
professional dance career in Tulsa, Oklahoma and also San Francisco,
California. She then moved back to Kansas to own dance studios just south of
Kansas City, establishing the Miami County Dance Movement in 2011. 


Competing with the Argonne Rebel Dance team at a young age, Draznik said the
biggest appeal to dancing was being on the stage.


"It's the trill," said Draznik. "I'm sure lots of athletes can say that when they're performing. It's about the adrenaline and pushing yourself. With dance, you can express yourself, you can create, it's artistic and it's also athletic."

Along with Draznik, Tim Weiser (baseball) and Natchapol Srinoon (golf) were
inducted into the 2025 Hall of Fame class.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

With the snowfall late Monday night and throughout early Tuesday, the
Great Bend Public Works department knew what time it was. It was time to clear
the streets. Public Works Director Jason Cauley said the street brined roads in
advance and were out clearing snow at 4:45 a.m. Tuesday. 


The City of Great Bend has tried a new approach on two heavily-trafficked
streets, Broadway Avenue and 24th Street. Cauley said asking
citizens not to park on portions of these streets has gone well.


"With this current storm, with the wind coming out of the north, it's causing some drifting," said Cauley. "I think the no parking is definitely helping. It's making it easier for our guys to get in there and do what they need to do. I appreciate it. It takes a little more effort from our citizens to not park in those areas, but it's making a difference for our equipment operators to get through there."

Great Bend is attempting to minimize the number of driveways getting blocked
due to snow removal efforts.


City crews made one complete passage around the city for snow removal and
Cauley said staff will begin a second passage Wednesday at 5 a.m. to help remove some of the drifting.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The St. John's Episcopal Church and First Congregational United Church of Christ of Great Bend will co-host their Shrove Tuesday pancake and sausage supper on March 4. The event will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 3400 21st Street in Great Bend.

There is no charge for the supper although there will be a free will offering.
