October is shaping up to be a busy time for the League of Women Voters of Great Bend. On Oct. 7 and Oct. 16, the non-profit will host candidate forums in Great Bend and Hoisington, respectively, ahead of the upcoming Nov. 4 general election. A few days before that, the League is hosting a fundraiser at Pizza Hut in Great Bend. Janice Walker, with the League of Voters, explained the purpose of the fundraiser during Monday's USD 428 Board of Education meeting.
"We are raising money with the Pizza Hut fundraiser for a scholarship at Barton Community College, so that person can go on to a 4-year college," she said. "We want this scholarship in the name of two ladies who worked hard in the league and for the Historical Society: Bev Komarek and Rose Kelly."
The fundraiser is scheduled from 5-9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, at the Great Bend Pizza Hut, 2006 Main Street. Fifteen percent of all food sales will go to the League of Women Voters. A raffle will also raise additional funds.
The League of Women Voters is currently accepting questions to candidates for the forum on Oct. 7 at the Great Bend Events Center, and the Oct. 16 forum at the Friendship House in Hoisington.
A link to the Google questionnaire was made available Monday on the websites and Facebook pages of the League of Women Voters of Great Bend (lwvgreatbend.org and facebook.com/LWVofGB) and the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce (greatbend.org and facebook.com/gbcoc). The races in Great Bend include Mayor, City Council Wards 1, 2, 3, USD 428 board, and BCC Trustees. The races in Hoisington include Mayor and USD 431 board.
