The drought monitor report as of Tuesday, February 25th continues to show slight imptovement. Stafford County and part of Pawnee are totally out of drought. Barton is primarily abnormally dry with the northern third in moderate drought. The six to ten-day outlook (March 3 to 7) indicates near normal for temperatures and a 33 to 40% chance of leaning above normal for precipitation. The eight to fourteen-day outlook (March 5 to 11) indicates a 33 to 40% chance of leaning above normal for temperatures and a near normal for precipitation.

While winter may rear its head a bit, today is March 1st, the start of meteorological spring. This week’s weather is well above normal for temperatures and compared to the last few years we are in fair shape in terms of soil moisture. Wheat should be breaking dormancy and starting to resume growth. Winter wheat is an interesting plant and to understand why it works in Kansas, let’s take time to consider how it grows and survives here.

· Wheat is a grass, a monocot (one seed leaf at emergence). Unlike broadleaf plants, the seed stays in the soil at emergence. For a broadleaf plant, when the seedling emerges, so does the growing point. For grasses, the growing point stays below the surface for an extended period of time. For winter wheat, that is typically until spring. In the fall, the plant establishes a root system above the seed. It establishes the number of tillers which is a function of plant density, planting time and weather. As daylength decreases and temperatures cool, leaves grow prostrate, not vertically. It changes the contents of the cells to better survive freezing temperatures. It becomes winterhardy. With growing point below the soil surface, it is better protected from winter temperatures.

· During winter, the plant may go dormant and will not resume growth until daylength starts to increase and temperatures warm. Leaves may or may not be lost during winter. If they are lost, as long as the growing point is healthy, new leaf growth will occur and it’s not a problem. It’s important to note that unlike broadleaves, growth is above the growing point. That’s why your lawn grows immediately after you mow it. It’s why grazing wheat works.

· As the plant resumes growth, leaf growth is upright on the main shoot and tillers. Eventually, here normally around mid-March, the growing point will emerge from beneath the soil. This is termed jointing or first hollow stem. The head is forming and pushing upward. This is when the plant is most vulnerable to damage from freezing temperatures.

· The flag leaf will appear, the head will emerge, and soon after pollination will occur. While the plant may have a fair number of tillers, not all of them will produce heads. However, if some primary or secondary tillers are damage, these tillers can go ahead and flower.

The most extensive database on Vietnam War causalities was the passion of a man from Hays.

The late Richard Coffelt, a longtime Hays attorney, spent years and his own money researching and amassing the <a href="https://www.coffeltdatabase.org/">Coffelt Database</a>, which is now available for free through the National Archives.

Although others contributed to the database and Coffelt wanted the record source named something more accessible, the database was named in honor of him.

Jo Ann Jennings, Coffelt's wife, recounted information about the database during a lecture at the Hays VFW on Feb. 16.

Coffelt was a U.S. Army veteran who served during the Korean War. He had no connection with the Vietnam War.

However, in 1980, he became acquainted with the mother of&nbsp;Gary Lee Binder of Hays. Gary Binder, who served with the Navy, was killed in action in 1967 in Vietnam, and Coffelt wanted to learn more about the circumstances of Binder's death.

Jennings explained this was before the rise of personal computing and Google, which meant hours spent at libraries, especially the&nbsp;Presidential Library of Lyndon Baines Johnson in Austin, Texas. She said she spent many vacations accompanying Richard on research trips, sometimes at his side in study rooms.

Johnson sent a letter of condolence to every family of a service member killed in Vietnam during his administration. Those letters included the unit numbers of the service members, which made them valuable in Coffelt's research.

Jennings said Richard spent countless hours taking notes on yellow legal pads.

Coffelt saw the need to connect soldiers with other soldiers. The men who served wanted to know what had happened to their buddies.

Jennings said Coffelt was interested in working on the research because the federal government didn't keep track of the units the men who were killed in action were from.

He said having a unit designation was the most important thing to know if you wanted to know what happened to your friend.

“I felt that if I just looked long enough, hard enough, I would hit the mother lode,” Coffelt was quoted as saying in a story published in the February 2012 edition of the VVA Veteran magazine. 

“I still felt that there had to be some government source that would have all this information. It became kind of a game to try and locate the information in some government repository somewhere.”

In 1993-94, after PCs had become commonplace, Tom Holloway (Emory University, Atlanta) changed the landscape by obtaining the Department of Defense's casualty database and the Army Adjutant General's database in digital form, according to the database's website.

"Using the university's mainframe computers to read the reel-to-reel computer tapes,&nbsp;Holloway integrated the two databases and converted the information into a commonly used small-computer format. The "Holloway Database" effectively became the public's sole source of information regarding all American Vietnam dead," the database website said.

The database website said that in the late 1990s, others joined Coffelt's effort, contributing information and collating the collected material into digital form using the Holloway database as a baseline, the database said.

"The additional resources allowed the project's scope to expand to include units of assignment information for all service branches," according to the database's website. "In 2002, an early version of the Coffelt Database was deeded to the National Archives, which made it available online as a searchable database," the database said.

Jennings said Coffelt amassed a library that filled a room floor to ceiling with more than 300 books on Vietnam. She said her husband had read every book.

She said her husband had an almost photographic memory of the information. She recalled a person from Australia writing Coffelt, asking him if he might know what happened to his uncle.&nbsp;

Without the need to look at any source, Coffelt was able to write him a page of the entire account of the battle in which the man's uncle was killed and what happened in that battle.

"He had super-detailed information just from his remembrance," Jennings said.

A Vietnam veteran who worked on the database with Coffelt spoke at his funeral and said, "Richard knew more about what happened in Vietnam than any soldier that was there, and he wasn't there."

Today, the database contains more than 60,000 names and more than 1 million pieces of information. Gary L. Noller, Co. B, 1/46th Infantry, Vietnam 1970-71, called the database a gift to and for Vietnam veterans and their families.

He said in a letter on the database, often, the child or grandchild of a Vietnam casualty wishes to contact a veteran who served with their deceased family member.

Prior to the Coffelt Database, a search of this kind was often overwhelming. The official record listed casualties by unit at the division or brigade level,&nbsp;Noller said in his letter.

Coffelt's research expanded the casualty database to list the company and battalion-level casualties, Noller said.

"This effectively reduced the search for a veteran from a magnitude of 1 in 10,000 to 1 in 100. It can be said that the Coffelt Database made the search at least 100 times easier to conduct,"&nbsp;Noller said.

Vietnam veteran Dick Arnold worked on the database with Coffelt.&nbsp;

In a 2011 letter published on the database's website, he said, "I consider my participation in the creation and continued improvement of The Coffelt Database to be one of the proudest parts of my life. I also consider it a singular honor to have known and worked with Richard these last few years. All of us Vietnam veterans owe him a huge debt ..."

Although Coffelt and the others who contributed to the database were offered money to privatize the data, Coffelt and his fellow researchers insisted the database remain a free, open-source of information, Jennings said.

By 2009, Coffelt developed Lewy body dementia. He died on Jan. 25, 2012.

Hays VVA Chapter 939&nbsp;dedicated a plaque at the Hays Regional Airport to honor Coffelt's work in creating the database.

Not only is the Coffelt database still available and in use today. But a story on the database sparked an unlikely friendship between Jennings and a WWII veteran who read a story on the database in a veterans magazine.

Frank Malizia, who was 92 at the time, read that story and recognized Hays as a familiar place. He had been stationed in Great Bend during the war and was familiar with Hays and Ellis County. This led him to contact Jennings.

Coffelt Database on Americans killed in Vietnam was passion of Kan. attorney

Kansas Wetlands Education Center (KWEC) will host various free daily hands-on activities each afternoon of Spring Break, March 17-21, allowing people to get out and explore the diversity of the wetlands.

A different activity will take place from 1-4 p.m. each day. The event is informal, come-and-go, and no registration is required. Activities are geared toward school-aged children. Sure, Dr. Ty Brunswig practices veterinary medicine at the Animal Medical Center with a passion but that passion goes much further than that, being felt in his home and community. He was recognized for this as the recipient of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce’s 2024 NextGen Leader of the Year.

“Dr. Ty's impact on Great Bend extends far beyond the walls of the Animal Medical Center,” said Dr. Nels Lindberg, who brought Brunswig into the practice in 2014 and nominated him for the award. “He has become a driving force in the community, embodying servant leadership and inspiring growth in both his business and the lives of those around him.”

Brunswig joined the class of Great Bend Chamber of Commerce honorees during the 103-Annual Awards Night and Banquet Saturday, March 1, at the Corinthian Hill Event Center north of Great Bend. Other recipients included Business of the Year Mpire Realty, Citizen of the Year Paul Snapp and Legacy Award recipient Sheryl Cheely at the gala celebrating their contributions.

“Ty is a humble servant leader at work and in the community, but most importantly to our three daughters at home,” said his wife Courtney. “He is dedicated to raising the next set of leaders that are going through Great Bend schools and affect our community as well.”

His influence is evident at the AMC, where he has cultivated a thriving environment. “He's not just a veterinarian; he's a mentor, advisor, and coach to a team of over 20, fostering their personal and professional development,” Lindborg said.

Brunswig’s leadership was instrumental in a recent $800,000 clinic expansion, growing the AMC team from under 15 to over 20 members. He is now co-owner and manager of the practice.

“Beyond AMC, Dr. Ty's commitment to Great Bend shines brightly,” he said. He was a founding member of the First Christian Church's Refuge service, which has blossomed under his leadership from a small group of eight to a vibrant congregation of over 100 every Sunday.

His involvement with the Chamber of Commerce, including recent work with FUEL on their rebranding efforts, demonstrates his dedication to the broader business community. For over two years, he served as president of the local Quicksilver softball organization, further showcasing his commitment to local youth.

“Dr. Ty's achievements speak to his dedication and drive,” Lindborg said. He's a graduate of the ICE House Entrepreneurial Mindset program, a testament to his commitment to leadership development.

His contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards, including the 2022 Outstanding Young Alumnus of the Year from the KSU College of Veterinary Medicine and a place in the Great Bend Tribune's 20 Under 40 class of 2022.

Friends and colleagues describe Brunswig as a selfless individual with a huge heart and a contagious personality, he said. He has a knack for finding joy even in challenging situations, making him a beloved figure in the community.

“Ty really enjoys mentoring Great Bend High School students who work at the clinic as well as those who come to be interns for school projects,” Courtney said. “He also leads and guides upcoming vet students through an internship program hosting many in our home over the summer.”

Great Bend Chamber NextGen Leader award goes to Dr. Brunswig

Unlike the other honors awarded annually by the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, it bestows the Legacy Award only at the discretion of the Chamber Board to individuals whose impact influences the community at the bedrock level.

This truly is the case with Great Bend native Sheryl Cheely, the 2024 prize recipient.

"It's kind of unique to have someone this dedicated to their community and willing to give so much back to it," said Mark Bitter, a longtime friend and business partner of Cheely. "That is Sheryl. There are so many things that happen, and we never realized she was involved. She was content to work in the background."

The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce honored Cheely at the 103-Annual Awards Night and Banquet Saturday, March 1, at the Corinthian Hill Event Center north of Great Bend. Other honorees feted for their service included Business of the Year Mpire Realty, Citizen of the Year Paul Snapp and NextGen Leader Ty Brunswig.

“Sheryl Cheely has left an indelible mark on Great Bend, embodying the spirit and purpose of the Legacy Award,” her nomination reads. “Sheryl has been a foundational figure in Great Bend.”

“Her dedication to helping the community and fostering local initiatives is a testament to her outstanding service,” the nomination continues. She has “significantly contributed to the Great Bend community through her leadership, dedication and philanthropic efforts, making her a deserving recipient.”

A sample of this includes being a founding member of Prairie Godmothers, which provides hardship assistance to women for basic needs not met by other resources, and supporting MyTown, the grassroots effort to fill downtown storefronts. She donated the Dolly Trolley to the Rosewood Roots and Wings Foundation, a beloved Christmas tradition, and generously supports small businesses and entrepreneurs, often anonymously.

“As a board member of MyTown, Cheely played a pivotal role in revitalizing downtown Great Bend,” the nominator noted. Her efforts included overseeing projects that enhanced the local economy and community aesthetics. Notably, she announced the full repayment of a City of Great Bend loan for MyTown, reflecting successful financial stewardship.

"She's a very generous person," Bitter said. "Not that many people are that dedicated to their hometown. My Town wouldn't have happened without her generosity."

There is also her involvement with the Golden Belt Community Foundation, where she helps shape the future of the region, and the Sunflower Rod and Custom Association dragstrip, where she fuels the town's vibrant spirit. Her efforts are evident also in her support of community services, the Great Bend Bat Cats, enhancements to recreational opportunities, scholarships and other endeavors.

And then there’s her work with the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce (having served as its Board president), and Great Bend Economic Development Inc. and the Final Fridays on Forest events.

“There’s just so much. She is very committed to the community. She wants it to prosper. She wants it to grow,” said Alene Owen, who started working with Cheely 25 years ago with what is now Renue Salon and Spa as part of MyTown and has since become a close friend. Yet, “she’s very humble. She wants no credit for anything and nothing in return, she is very giving.”

"I've known Sheryl since the mid-80s, back when we were all young and energetic, playing volleyball on opposing teams," recalls Jon Prescott, businessman and longtime acquaintance. "Sheryl and her late husband, Ray, were the team to beat—but we never could."

Prescott's connection with Cheely deepened in 1986 when he joined her at CPI Qualified Plan Consultants. "From that point forward, she became a true friend," he said. He emphasized the kind of candor that defines their relationship.

"True friends won't hesitate to share what's on their mind, provide constructive feedback, or engage in a good debate," he said. "But," he added with a smile, "you better have your homework done because she always had done hers."

Beyond friendship, Prescott recognizes Cheely's leadership qualities. "She always commits her mind and heart to anything and everything she does," he said. As an employee-owner at CPI, Cheely played a crucial role in the company's growth over her 35-plus-year career.

"She helped grow one of Great Bend's largest corporations from three employees to over 500, servicing corporations in all 50 states," Prescott noted. "She helped CPI become one of the most renowned retirement plan providers in the country."

"She was content to work in the background," Bitter said. "She's always there and always a part of it."

These words help describe Paul Snapp, the 2024 Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year. But, his wife Elise noted, they are not enough.

“It's hard to summarize my husband,” she said. “I am very proud of who he is. He lives what he thinks is important and that is faith, family and community. Outside of being busy following our four girls, he tries to be involved in our community as he thinks it's important to be engaged.”

Snapp, who serves as president and CEO of First Kansas Bank, was nominated for his “leadership, unwavering commitment to community development, and exemplary role model behavior,” the nomination reads.

He joined Business of the Year Mpire Realty, Legacy Award recipient Sheryl Cheely and NextGen Leader of the Year Dr. Ty Brunswig in receiving their recognition during the chamber’s 103-Annual Awards Night and Banquet Saturday, March 1, at the Corinthian Hill Event Center north of Great Bend. The gala highlighted the myriad contributions made to the community’s success made by the awardees.

“Paul Snapp is a deserving winner due to his exceptional dedication to our community and Bank team,” said friend and co-worker Jay Luerman, vice president at First Kansas. “With the support from his wife, Elise, Paul has graciously volunteered his time throughout the years.”

At the office, “Paul is a great leader for the First Kansas Bank team,” Luerman said. Whenever a situation arises, Paul always asks the co-worker what their thoughts are first before he shares his opinion.

“That little gesture truly makes each employee feel like they have authority within the decision,” he said. “Paul truly enjoys mentoring and seeing others on the team be successful. It brings him more joy than any personal recognition. He is a valuable asset to our team and community.”

With over 35 years of experience in the banking industry, Snapp has guided First Kansas since 2007, overseeing its expansion across the region. His leadership extends beyond the bank's walls, as he actively participates in strategic planning initiatives fostering economic growth in Great Bend.

In addition to his professional achievements, Snapp epitomizes social responsibility, the nomination notes. He sets high standards within his organization and inspires his colleagues and the broader community.

His service includes boards and organizations such as Great Bend Economic Development, United Way of Central Kansas, Great Bend Kiwanis Club, Great Bend Rotary Club, Central Kansas Development, Golden Belt Community Foundation, Golden Belt Bankers, Prince of Peace Parish,

USD 428 Foundation, Barton Community College Foundation, Barton County Kids Ag Day and the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce.

“Paul's dedication to the community is undeniable,” the nomination reads. He serves on the Great Bend Economic Development Board, collaborating with other leaders to enhance the local economy.

And “under his leadership, First Kansas Bank has generously supported numerous local events and organizations, contributing a remarkable $46,000 in donations and thousands of volunteer hours in a single year,” the nomination continues. Snapp's commitment to community service is further evident through his past service on the Chamber Board of Directors, where he served as board chair in 2017.

“Paul has always been committed to improving the community where he and his family live,” Luerman said, citing one of many examples. When Paul and Elise moved to Claflin they made a grassroots effort to help raise money to plant trees and install new playground equipment at the Claflin Community Park for the youth and families to be proud of and enjoy.

“Our girls got involved in summer swim and, over the years, the program has experienced a shortage of officials,” she said. “So, he became an official to help keep the summer club going. This involves a lot of extra hours, but he felt it was important to help and as a result, kept it possible for the kids to continue to swim.”

In addition, he volunteers to set up and take down flags on Memorial Day weekend, Fourth of July and Labor Day, Prior to this, he helped with the annual Kiwanis Club pancake feed.

For the last two weeks, he was selling half-court shot tickets for a fundraiser at Great Bend High School basketball games.

“Snapp's visionary leadership, steadfast involvement, and exemplary conduct make him a deserving candidate,” the nomination continued. “His continuous efforts to improve the quality of life in Great Bend have made a significant and lasting impact on the community.”

Paul was born in Belleville, the youngest of four. His father was a postmaster and farmed and Paul helped on the farm growing up. Most of Paul’s family attended K-state so he thought he would take a different path and went to KU.

He has a special interest in history, especially World War II. His interest was largely because his dad was a leg amputee from fighting in that conflict, but he didn’t think job opportunities would be as good with a history degree, so obtained a business degree instead.

His world revolves around his family, faith and community. “He believes in volunteering to help the community be a better place,” Elise said.

Tracking the price of grain — whether on an app or tuning into the right radio station for the market reports — is an important and routine part of farming. Still, Kansas Wheat and K-State wheat researchers encourage producers to look beyond the value of the bushels in the bin when deciding on their crop rotations to the economic, operational and environmental benefits of planting wheat.&nbsp;

“Wheat’s value extends far beyond the grain’s market price,” said Aaron Harries, Kansas Wheat vice president of research and operations. “The advantages of including wheat in your cropping system are wide-ranging, from providing flexibility in planting and nitrogen fertilizer timing, opportunities for dual-purpose production or double-cropping and the value of wheat residue.”

The compiled K-State research findings were published in a WheatRx publication this winter that describes the versatility wheat brings to farming operations. The article is part of “Wheat: Beyond the Value of the Grain,” an educational campaign organized by Kansas Wheat and K-State Research and Extension. The campaign — aimed at farmers, landowners, financial institutions and policymakers — emphasizes the wide-ranging advantages of including wheat in a cropping rotation.&nbsp;

One key advantage of planting wheat is a wide optimum sowing window. According to Romulo Lollato, K-State wheat specialist, winter wheat has a broader planting window compared to summer crops, especially in warmer regions like south central Kansas and into Oklahoma. This wide window means farmers can wait to plant for any number of reasons — the next good rain, after other crops are harvested or following completion of other important farm operations.&nbsp;

Producers also have flexibility in what class of wheat to plant, meaning they can choose to plant winter or spring wheat or between different classes (hard red winter, hard red spring, hard white winter, soft red winter) depending on the local market advantages. In northwest Kansas, Lollato explained farmers could choose to plant spring wheat if they experience an extremely dry fall but a wet spring. In southeast Kansas, farmers can plant either hard or soft red winter wheat to meet local market demand.&nbsp;

Nitrogen fertilization timing is another area where wheat has advantages. Research indicates that the crop can recover from early-season nitrogen deficiencies, as long as nitrogen is available near jointing. This resilience allows farmers to strategically time fertilization based on weather and optimize nitrogen uptake. Remote sensing technologies further enhance nitrogen management.

The dual-purpose capability of winter wheat for grazing and grain is another asset. Wheat’s resilience to early-growth stress makes it ideal for grazing, providing high-quality forage during fall and winter when other options are scarce. This dual-purpose function offers market flexibility, allowing farmers to choose between grazing and grain production based on prevailing conditions.&nbsp;

Even after harvest, wheat continues to provide additional benefits to a farming operation. Environmentally, wheat residue protects against erosion, reduces evaporative water loss and suppresses weed growth. Standing stubble also captures snowfall, increasing soil water content for subsequent crops. In wetter regions, farmers can even bale residue for hay, generating additional revenue.

Finally, producers can take advantage of double-cropping by including wheat in a rotation in areas where there is enough moisture. Winter wheat can be planted soon after the harvest of a summer crop or vice versa. Doing so allows for more cash crops to be grown within the same period.&nbsp;

Overall, wheat is an ideal crop to plant in Kansas for reasons far beyond the value of the kernels cut each summer. This field crop is not just iconic, but a versatile, integral component of the Kansas agricultural landscape.&nbsp;

Wheat Scoop: K-State research details wheat’s value in cropping rotation

Being an active-duty member of the military equates to a hectic lifestyle, and oftentimes, soldiers are so preoccupied with their daily tasks and training that getting a college education is the last thing on their minds, but even with his schedule full of military obligations, Isaias Hernandez graduated with his associate degree from Barton Community College at Fort Riley in December.

“Barton Community College is extremely military-friendly due to its extensive experience working with military personnel,” he said. “The entire staff knows the lifestyle and what to expect and is more than open to working with a military schedule. This helped me choose Barton because I knew no matter what phase of training I was in, I wouldn’t have to worry as much as I might have to somewhere else, where the military life is like a foreign language to them.”

Hernandez is pursuing his dream of becoming a lawyer and utilized Barton’s LSEC program to knock out his associate degree. Active-duty soldiers, their dependents, and Department of Defense employees can take advantage of the program at no cost, which makes it a no-brainer for anyone who fits into these categories and is looking to start their educational journey.

“The affordability of pursuing my education while active duty with Barton was remarkable,” he said. “The advisors emphasized the importance of applying for financial aid and ensuring that my Army Ignited was complete before enrolling in classes. This approach provided me with the guidance and reassurance I needed to feel comfortable knowing I didn’t do something wrong.”

Hernandez said he is working on his bachelor’s degree in finance and plans to apply to law school. He then wants to climb the ranks and eventually open his own law firm but said he will always be grateful for Barton helping him take that first step.

“My experience at Barton was the ideal scenario,” he said. “My teachers were incredibly friendly and genuinely motivated to teach their students. I have personally recommended Barton Community College to a few friends who are considering taking classes and have received nothing but positive feedback from them. Barton is an excellent option for anyone seeking a degree or certificate, especially those who are active duty or have a demanding lifestyle.”

Active-duty Barton Community College grad sets sights on career as lawyer

USD 428 is proud to celebrate the artistic achievements of its students as they participate in the statewide Youth Art Month Exhibit, hosted by the Kansas Art Education Association (KAEA). This prestigious exhibition, held at the Topeka &amp; Shawnee County Public Library, will showcase student artwork from February 25 to March 29, 2025.

KAEA invited art educators from across Kansas to select one outstanding piece from each school they represent. Miraya Starnes and Shannon Wedel, USD 428 elementary art teachers, were honored to select one piece of artwork from the five schools they serve, highlighting not only artistic talent but also the dedication and creativity of their young artists.

“This exhibit is a wonderful opportunity for our students to have their work displayed on a statewide platform,” said Wedel. “It’s inspiring to see their unique styles and creativity come to life, and we couldn’t be prouder of them.”

This marks USD 428’s second year participating in the exhibit. Starnes and Wedel personally transported the selected pieces to Topeka, where they assisted in curating and displaying the collection. Families and community members are invited to attend a celebration of the exhibit on March 29 at the Topeka &amp; Shawnee County Public Library, where hands-on activities will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by an award recognition ceremony from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

 </figure>From USD 428 Great Bend...USD 428 is proud to celebrate the artistic achievements of its students as they participate in the statewide Youth Art Month Exhibit, hosted by the Kansas Art Education Association (KAEA). This prestigious exhibition, held at the Topeka &amp; Shawnee County Public Library, will showcase student artwork from February 25 to March 29, 2025.KAEA invited art educators from across Kansas to select one outstanding piece from each school they represent. Miraya Starnes and Shannon Wedel, USD 428 elementary art teachers, were honored to select one piece of artwork from the five schools they serve, highlighting not only artistic talent but also the dedication and creativity of their young artists.“This exhibit is a wonderful opportunity for our students to have their work displayed on a statewide platform,” said Wedel. “It’s inspiring to see their unique styles and creativity come to life, and we couldn’t be prouder of them.”<figure>

The women’s basketball program at Barton Community College was launched
in 1977. Over the nearly 50 years, the program has produced 10 Region VI championships,
17 Jayhawk Conference championships, more than 1,000 wins and several Hall of
Fame players and coaches. With all the success, Barton has never seen a player
quite like Vivian Onugha. 

Onugha rewrote the record book at Barton for rebounds
this year, now owning the records for most rebounds in a career, most rebounds
in a single season and most rebounds in a game.

"She was somewhat raw when she came, but you could definitely see the potential," said Barton coach Alan Clark. "She averaged almost 10 rebounds a game last year, and she had to split some of those with teammate Vera Ojenuwa. There was no doubt that her ability was there."

Coach Clark saw his sophomore center grab 23 rebounds this past
Wednesday night in a win over Colby giving her 772 in her career and 458 this
year. In doing so, Onugha surpassed the single season and career rebound
records that existed since 2008 from Inga Muciniece.

Onugha is averaging 16.4 rebounds per game, which leads the country for D-I women’s junior college basketball. Onugha has recorded 23 double-doubles this year and has 36 in her career.

"Most kids don't get 16 rebounds in a game...ever," said Clark. "She averages that. She's easily the most prolific rebounder in Barton history. She just goes and gets it."

From Nigeria, Onugha enjoyed playing rugby and flag
football growing up but jumped at the opportunity to come to the United States
to play basketball in Great Bend.

playoffs for Onugha to add to her record-setting numbers.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;"I love the culture and everything about Barton," said Onugha. "I love the Barton family I have here. I had the opportunities to leave last year, but I decided to stay because my coach has been there for me and given me the opportunity to play in the United States."
