Last year’s growing season brought to Kansas a new disease to corn. Corn stunt spiroplasma and its associated vector the corn leafhopper insect. It was confirmed in 26 counties in 2024. Active field scouting last year confirmed active leaf hoppers in many additional counties. Although the majority of the positive reports are from field corn, also confirmed corn stunt spiroplasma in sweet corn as well. High levels of disease were found in late-planted and double-cropped corn, leading to potential yield reduction. So be aware that late planted and double-cropped corn is more at risk of contracting corn stunt disease. Early planting of corn is advised as leafhopper infestations, and corn stunt disease will increase as the season progresses. Removal of volunteer corn plants following the growing season is also advised to reduce overwintering sites for adult corn leafhoppers.

Symptoms of the disease may include shortened internodes, which can result in a stunted stature of the corn plant as well as leaves with red discoloration. Because other factors in the environment can cause red or purple discoloration in corn, laboratory testing is important to diagnose corn stunt disease and distinguish it from other stressors. Corn stunt disease can result in yield loss due to severe plant stunting, smaller ear size and loose/lost kernels.

In the past, corn stunt disease has been limited in distribution to southern Texas, Florida, and California in the United States. Corn stunt is caused by a wall-less bacterial pathogen called corn stunt spiroplasma. The corn leafhopper can also transmit additional pathogens, either singly or in combination with the corn stunt spiroplasma. To date, only corn stunt spiroplasma has been detected in Kansas. Additional research is needed to determine the presence of other pathogens vectored by corn leafhopper in Kansas.

This disease is spread only by the corn leafhopper. Corn leafhopper acquires pathogens within minutes of feeding on infected corn plants but it can take up to 30 days for the leafhopper to be able to infect healthy corn plants during feeding events.

Although the infestation by the corn leafhoppers usually begins at the early crop stages, and the transmission of the pathogens occurs in the vegetative growth stages, symptoms of corn stunt disease only appear later in the season, generally 30 days after leafhopper feeding, when corn has already reached the reproductive stages.

Chemical Control: Corn stunt disease incidence will not be reduced by insecticide control. If you see disease symptoms in the field, the plants have already been infected. Infected plants will not show symptoms for 1 month. If the corn is mature enough, then infection may not impact corn kernels. According to Corteva Agriscience, insecticidal seed treatments consisting of imidacloprid and clothianidin can provide control of corn leafhoppers up to the V3 growth stage. After that, plants are susceptible to acquiring the corn stunt pathogens through leafhopper feeding.

The corn leafhopper is relatively simple to identify under magnification. These leafhoppers are light tan to yellowish-white in color and approximately 1/8” long. Two distinct dark spots between the antennae and eyes are very characteristic of this species. Nymphs lack wings and can vary in color. Like most leafhoppers, all stages move quickly when disturbed and hide in shaded areas of corn plants. CAMPBELL: Corn stunt disease – a new threat to Kansas corn

A long-time Great Bend resident is now the new face of Renue Salon, Spa and Fashion Boutique where she is at the front desk to welcome clients and accommodate service providers.

Penny Dreiling, salon coordinator, is using her 25 years of accounting and office experience to keep schedules on track and retail products on the shelves.

“My goal is to live up to the standards set by my predecessor, Susan Williams,” Dreiling said. “The priority is to streamline the services we offer and provide the products that our clients want. We achieve this goal by keeping the lines of communication open with everyone.”

Dreiling is available to set appointments and answer questions about services and products, and women’s clothing and accessories at Renue, 1419 Main, Great Bend.

“At the same time,” she noted, “I am using my accounting and office experience to handle the many administrative tasks. When things run smoothly behind the scenes, our clients and providers reap the benefits.”

Renue has been expanding services in recent years and now has 10 providers. These professionals offer hair care, manicures, pedicures, facials, massages and eyelash treatments.

“Since we have so many valuable services, I regularly spread the word through social media,” Dreiling noted. “We want to keep the flow of information going to our regular clients and all newcomers.”

Dreiling has been with Renue for only a short time but is impressed not only with the products and services but also the whole atmosphere of the downtown business.

“This wonderful staff has been so welcoming to me, and the atmosphere is so quiet and calming,” Dreiling commented. “I think our clients appreciate this peaceful environment.

“In addition, providers are conscientious about staying up with trends in salon care and treatment, while also participating in professional continuing education.”

Dreiling was born in Missouri but moved to Great Bend when she was 13 years old; she is a Great Bend High School graduate.

Previous employers include Great Bend Children’s Clinic, Spectrum CPA and First Kansas Bank.

Great Bend Chamber offering health plan for small businesses

From Great Bend Economic Development...

Great Bend Alive, the downtown arm of Great Bend Economic Development (GBED), is partnering with the City of Great Bend to introduce a brand-new festival, Big Bend Bash, set for Saturday, June 7, 2025. Designed to celebrate local culture and bring fresh energy to downtown, the event will combine long-time community favorites with new experiences for both residents and visitors to enjoy.

Big Bend Bash marks a new chapter for downtown Great Bend, introducing a revitalized festival experience that builds on the past traditions of the June&nbsp;Jaunt event, while bringing fresh energy, expanded entertainment, and a stronger focus on the future of downtown.

This year’s event will also serve as a fundraiser for Great Bend Alive’s upcoming multi-million dollar streetscape project, a major downtown renovation aimed at creating a more walkable and inviting environment. The need for this project became even more evident after the July 2023 storm, which destroyed more than 20 trees in the downtown area. With such a large price tag, fundraising efforts are beginning now, with the goal of beginning construction in 2026. Attendees will have the opportunity to view renderings of the design at the event and learn more about how the improvements will enhance the downtown experience, and provide feedback used to help guide the project.

The festival will kick off with the Red, White &amp; Blue Parade, a patriotic celebration that builds on the success of last year’s "Great Bend Alive Parade Through Time" with exciting new elements. Nominations for the parade’s Grand Marshal are open on the Great Bend Alive Facebook page, where the community can vote for their favorite until April 6. Throughout the day, Jack Kilby Square will be transformed into a lively Kid Zone, featuring inflatables, face painting, food and retail vendors, and live entertainment. East of Main Street, festival goers will find even more music, food trucks, and vendors, along with the popular Shifters Car Show, which has moved to Lakin Avenue between Main and Williams Street.

The 10th Annual Brew Fest, hosted by Bike Brew Q will also join the new downtown event. New outdoor Great Bend festival launches June 7

Earlier this year, Barton County accepted bids for cold mix for 2025
projects. Rather than award the bid, County administrative staff met with
Venture Corporation to determine if there was a more cost-effective method that
would enhance operational programming. 

County Works Director Chris Schartz said
it was determined that the county would move asphalt preparation to Venture.


"In the past, Venture would have to break down their plant in order to bring it to our pit," said Schartz. "They have to plan around their jobs. This would help us get the asphalt sooner. They don't have to break down their plant. We would just go out there and get it."

With Venture mixing the asphalt and providing all aggregates and sand, the
county can receive fresh asphalt prepared with purer ingredients. In addition,
the county will avoid costs associated with onsite production, storage and
material aging. 


Barton County Commissioner Duane Reif said the county will receive 25,000 tons
of asphalt from Venture at a cost of $32 per ton.


"We could have taken the easy way out and done it like we've always done," said Reif. "It was brought to our attention that maybe we should be looking into this. We did spend a lot of time on this. We had several work sessions."

Schartz said the county could save approximately $45,000 a year in buying sand
rather than pumping and hauling the sand from the county’s pit in Ellinwood.


There are 389 miles of paved roads in Barton County, ranking near the top among
Kansas counties. A quarter of county’s paved roads are overlaid each year. The
southwest quadrant is the focus for repairs in 2025.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Beth Rein started her career with USD 428 in Great Bend in 1997 as a
sixth grade teacher at Riley Elementary School. Rein became the principal at
Riley in 2019 and announced her resignation effective at the end of the school year.


USD 428 Superintendent Khris Thexton said staff and a committee interviewed and
recommend Lisa Starr to become the next principal at Riley for the 2025-2026
school year.


"We had our panel that interviewed and they also had a staff panel that was there," said Thexton. "She did a very good job. She'll be a good person to replace Beth."

The Board of Education approved the hiring of Starr in the personnel report
presented at Wednesday’s luncheon. Starr currently serves as an instructional
coach at Riley.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

"She'll do a great job," added Thexton. "I'm looking forward to her taking over."

The 'Rebel Women' mural recognizes Kansas women who contributed to the statewide and national campaign for women's voting rights. This public art piece intends to encourage reflection on Kansas history, inform people about notable Kansas figures, and promote these values to future generations.

Mary J. Dillard (1874-1954- Lawrence) Mary Jane attended the racially segregated Chapel School. As the only Black student in her graduating class at Lawrence High School in 1892, she delivered a speech praising the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (published in the Atchison Blade). As an educator, she taught and encouraged young Langston Hughes at Pinckney School.

Jane L. Brooks (1867-1945- Wichita) After serving as the Kansas Equal Suffrage Association (KESA) president from 1917-1918, Jane was elected chair of the new National League of Women Voters in 1919 and founded the nation’s first local and state League in Kansas. She is honored in the Plaza of Heroines at Wichita State University. Brooks is remembered as a formidable lady who would make a success of whatever she did.

Lucy B. Johnston (1846-1937- Topeka) Lucy worked on the Library Extension Committee of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs and was also responsible for expanding the Kansas Traveling Library’s collection. During her presidency of KESA, she led efforts toward the successful 1912 ratification of the Equal Suffrage Amendment in Kansas. Her Kansas chapter covering 1900-1920 appears in History of Woman Suffrage (Vol. 6).

Seated: Minnie J. Grinstead (1869-1925- Larned/Liberal) Minnie earned a lifetime teaching certificate from Emporia State University. In 1918, she became the first woman elected to the Kansas House of Representatives and proudly presented the joint resolution to ratify the 19th Amendment on June 16, 1919. Known as a respected orator, she seconded the nomination of Calvin Coolidge for president at the 1924 Republican National Convention.

The mural's concept originated from the Suffrage Memorial Mural Committee, which collaborated with the League of Women Voters of Kansas, the American Association of University Women, and the Kansas Capitol Preservation Committee. Given that Kansas was The mural holds substantial significance as the first state in the nation to advocate for full women's suffrage. The mural is located on the first floor, directly opposite the cage elevator. You are invited to visit and appreciate this exquisite artwork.

"Dancing with the Cougars" returns this year with another dance workshop for the community featuring a tango dance class at 6:30 p.m. March 28 in Studio 34, and all proceeds go to support Barton Dance Theatre's trip to Chicago in May.

Barton Dance Instructor Danika Bielek will teach the class, and she has danced the Tango for over a decade. The class will cover the fundamentals of the Tango, including the basic steps, musicality, body alignment, and connecting with your dance partner.

Bielek said she is excited to share this class with the community.

Barton Dance Theatre to host 'Dancing with the Cougars' fundraiser

A Kansas Forest Service official is urging Kansans to be on the lookout for a pair of invasive species that threaten the state’s forests and ecosystems by pushing out native vegetation.

Ryan Rastok, the forest health coordinator with KFS, said Callery pear and bush honeysuckle are especially meddlesome this time of year.

“I was flying back from Georgia into Kansas City recently and as we were flying into the airport, I could see an abundance of callery pear, even from the plane,” Rastok said.

For a brief time – often in early April – the Callery pear puts on a stunning display of white flowers. But behind the beauty belies a menace.

Native to China, the Callery pear includes 26 cultivars that present significant ecological concerns in Kansas and Missouri. Among them:

· It displaces native trees and plants in the wild, which lowers ecologocial biodiversity. The tree does not host native pollinators.

· It leafs out before woodland wildflowers emerge from dormancy, robbing them of critical sunlight and preventing their growth.

· Its’ egg-shaped structure – at heights of 30-40 feet – and brittle wood make it prone to falling limbs that can damage people and property.

“Yeah, there’s been a myriad of descriptions for the smell, most of them vile and maybe some not appropriate to say out loud,” he said.

Bush Honeysuckle is another invasive that Rastok urges homeowners to identify and remove. The shrub spreads up to 15-20 feet in height with flowers that change from white to yellow; juicy red berries; and opposite, simple leaves that green up much earlier than surrounding native vegetation.

The shrub typically flowers in May or June, and unlike the Callery pear, is more fragrant.

Rastok said not counting such human activities as urban sprawl and others, bush honeysuckle “is the biggest threat to our native forests and ecosystems in Kansas, and it’s continuing to spread so we need to keep the pressure on that one, as well. The biggest issue right now is that it’s starting to establish in the state’s woodlands where it will eventually push out our native vegetation…it simplifies the ecosystem by lowering its overall floral and faunal diversity.”

Neither the Callery pear nor the bush honeysuckle are easily managed by prescribed burning, Rastok said. More information on controls, and options for replenishing areas where trees have been removed, is available from the Kansas Forest Service at www.kansasforests.org,

BOOR: Kansans be on the lookout for invasive shrub species 

On Monday, March 24, at about 10:30 p.m., Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the 2000 block of Patton Road, just outside the City of Great Bend. The deputies were responding to a reported disturbance call.

Upon arrival, the deputies contacted the victim who stated she was babysitting children at the residence. When putting the children to bed, one child complained there was a “monster” under their bed. When the victim attempted to show the child there was nothing under the bed, she came face-to-face with a male suspect who was hiding there. An altercation ensued with the babysitter and one child was knocked over in the struggle. The suspect then fled the scene before deputies arrived.

The victim identified the suspect as Martin Villalobos, Jr., who once lived at the residence but there was currently a protection from abuse order issued against him to stay away from the property. Deputies searched the area that evening for the suspect but were unable to locate him.

The next morning, Tuesday, March 25, deputies were in the area still looking for the suspect. The suspect was seen in the 2000 block of Patton Road at which point he attempted to flee from law enforcement. After a short foot pursuit, the suspect was captured.

Martin Villalobos, Jr., age 27, was arrested and transported the Barton County Jail. He was booked on requested charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated burglary, aggravated battery, child endangerment, felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer and violation of a protection from abuse order. He is being held in lieu of a $500,000 bond.

Area vocalists will have the opportunity to collaborate and learn from University of Kansas Voice Professor Dr. Genaro Mendez as part of his masterclass at 11 a.m. April 11 in the Chapel in the Fine Arts Building, followed by a recital with Barton Guitar Instructor Aleia Gonzalez and Barton Director of Accompaniment Dr. Alejandro Avila from 5-6 p.m.

The masterclass portion will provide an enriching opportunity for students and community members to receive tutelage from a veteran vocal instructor. The masterclass and recital are both free and open to the public.

Mexican-American lyric tenor Méndez has a versatile and wide-ranging career as a leading operatic tenor, chamber and solo recitalist, and voice professor. As an oratorio and chamber music soloist, he has been featured in Orff’s “Carmina Burana,” Britten’s “Serenade for Tenor,” “Horn, and Strings,” and Handel’s “Messiah.” Other featured solo engagements have included the Martha’s Vineyard Music Festival, Bach Aria Soloists, Reno Chamber Orchestra, and the Reno Philharmonic.

A Nevada native, Genaro began his musical studies and performing career under the late master teacher of voice and Nevada Opera founder Ted Puffer. Under Maestro Puffer’s musical guidance, Genaro completed his undergraduate degree in voice from the University of Nevada Reno and performed in over 30 Nevada Opera productions in roles ranging from chorus member to comprimario to leading tenor. He continued his formal studies at the University of Illinois, where he performed on the 1990-1997 U.S. tour of the complete songs of Franz Schubert with world-renowned vocal coach John Wustman. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Oregon and studied under mezzo-soprano Milagro Vargas.

During his time at the University of Kansas, Genaro has established himself as a dedicated teacher of vocal technique, diction, and repertoire. The students from his studio have enjoyed numerous accolades, including placing in regional and national voice competitions and apprenticeships with opera companies across the country.

Vocal professor to present recital & masterclass in Great Bend

On Tuesday, March 25, at approximately 12:16 a.m. an officer
with the Great Bend Police Department observed a vehicle southbound in the 2400
Block of Morton Street. The officer observed the vehicle to have a defective
tag light and conducted a traffic stop at 24th and Main. 

During contact with
the driver, the officer was given a name that was later proven to be false. The
officer re-contacted the driver who admitted to be Phillip Markum, age 23. Markum
stated to the officer he was the registered owner of the vehicle. &nbsp;Markum further
stated he had financial cards in his wallet that belonged to a family member. The
officer was advised otherwise by Barton County Dispatch. 

Another officer
contacted the registered owner who informed officers that her vehicle had been
stolen. &nbsp;Markum was arrested and transported to the Barton County Jail.
&nbsp;While there, it was determined the financial cards he had in his wallet
had been reported stolen in a previous case of aggravated burglary. During
questioning, Markum admitted to entering a residence to steal the items. &nbsp;

Markum
was booked on the charges of aggravated burglary in lieu of a $75,000.00 bond. He
was also booked in lieu of a $10,000 bond for the charges of felony theft, felony
interference, no driver's license, no insurance and no tag light.

GPS Kids Club holding golf tournament April 25, sign up today

Rosewood Miracle Workers AKTION Club recently delivered supplies from its annual Coloring Book and Crayon Drive conducted last fall. A busy winter kept AKTION Club members from completing delivery until now, but the supplies were still right on time for drive recipient Clara Barton Hospital.&nbsp;

“The donations we receive from Rosewood AKTION Club annually are what we typically receive for the year for coloring books and crayons,” explained Michelle Moshier, director of Clara Barton Hospital Foundation. “We are so appreciative whenever they arrive. It means a lot to us that Rosewood AKTION Club donations are helping to make Clara Barton a brighter place, one page at a time.”

Mosier said the coloring books and crayons are provided at each clinic in Hoisington, Russell and Great Bend. They are also provided at the registration desk and on the nursing floor of Clara Barton Hospital.

“These supplies help to entertain the kiddos throughout the year,” she said. “All of our staff know where they are located to hand out to any child who is a patient or is here for a loved one. Whatever that scenario is, we have color books and crayons that help keep them occupied while they are here.”

Rosewood AKTION Club’s effort netted 376 coloring books and 328 boxes of crayons from last fall’s community drive. Rosewood Residential Employees chipped in $60 that went to the purchase of crayons for the drive.

“Our AKTION Club has been conducting this drive for a decade and we have probably averaged about 500 coloring books and crayon boxes each year during that span.” said Rosewood AKTION Club sponsor Frankie Pelster. “We are a bit below our average this time, but our numbers are still good when you consider we are bringing smiles to more than 300 children in need for the upcoming year. We thank the community for joining us in our most recent effort to provide supplies to CBH, which in turn provides such a wonderful service to children.”

Rosewood AKTION Club is an affiliate of the national Kiwanis organization that promotes service in action for people with developmental disabilities. The area club allows Rosewood representatives to be actively involved in the community and to positively impact the lives of others.
