Crabgrass preventers are another name for preemergence herbicides that prevent crabgrass seeds from developing into mature plants. Many people have a somewhat foggy idea of how they work and assume they kill the weed seed.&nbsp; Such is not the case. They do not kill the seed or even keep the seed from germinating but rather kill the young plant after it germinates.&nbsp; Therefore, they do not prevent germination but prevent emergence.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Crabgrass preventers are just that – preventers. With few exceptions they have no effect on existing crabgrass plants, so they must be applied before germination. Additionally, preventers do not last forever once applied to the soil.&nbsp; Microorganisms and natural processes begin to gradually break them down soon after they are applied. If some products are applied too early, they may have lost much of their strength by the time they are needed. Most crabgrass preventers are fairly ineffective after about 60 days, but there is considerable variation among products.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

For most of Kansas, crabgrass typically begins to germinate around May 1 or a little later. April 15 is normally a good target date for applying preventer because it gives active ingredients time to evenly disperse in the soil before crabgrass germination starts.&nbsp; Even better, base timing on the bloom of ornamental plants. The Eastern Redbud tree is a good choice for this purpose. When the trees in your area approach full bloom, apply crabgrass preventer. A follow-up application will be needed about 8 weeks later unless you are using Dimension or Barricade.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Dimension and Barricade are the only two products that give season-long control of crabgrass from a single application. In fact, they can be applied earlier than April 15 and still have sufficient residual strength to last the season. Barricade can even be applied in late fall for crabgrass control the next season.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Dimension can be applied as early as March 1. Because of the added flexibility in timing, these products are favorites of lawn care companies who have many customers to service in the spring. Though Dimension is usually not applied as early as Barricade, it is the herbicide of choice if it must be applied later than recommended. It is the exception to the rule that preemergence herbicides do not kill existing weeds. Dimension can kill crabgrass as long as it is young (two- to three-leaf stage). Dimension is also the best choice if treating a lawn that was planted late last fall. Normally a preemergence herbicide is not recommended unless the lawn has been mowed two to four times. But Dimension is kind to young tall fescue, perennial ryegrass, and Kentucky bluegrass seedlings and some formulations can be applied as early as two weeks after the first sign of germination. However, read the label of the specific product you wish to use to ensure that this use is allowed. Lawns established in the fall can be safely treated with Dimension the following spring even if they have not been mowed.

In a partnership with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment
and Wichita State University, the “Foundations of Public Health” training
program was launched to give participants the knowledge, skills and connections
needed to excel as public health professionals in Kansas. 

Misty Trudeau, Barton
County Health Department Financial Officer, completed the program and was recognized
at the recent Governor’s Conference.


"I am passionate about saving the taxpayer money but still doing the work," said Trudeau. "I really like helping people. As a financial officer, my patients are the people, our employees and businesses in the county."

The training program lasts a year and requires participants to finish homework
prior to each session and complete a final project. Trudeau said there are a
lot of great ideas and initiatives with public health, but there is still a
funding requirement for which she actively pursues ways to secure grants.


"I don't like to be told no when it comes to obtaining grants and funding," said Trudeau. "I don't like community members to be told no, but I also don't want them to have to pay for it. If I can find a way to get that funding to help people...that's where my heart is."

The Barton County Commission thanked and recognized Trudeau at Tuesday’s
meeting for being the first member of Barton County to complete the training.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (3/31)

Jobs for America’s Graduates – Kansas was created to offer an elective
class that provides academic and other positive supports to ensure students earn
their diploma. The program has been offered at Great Bend High School and for
the third year the Great Bend Middle School has provided the class.


The 2024-2025 school year marks the second year that Brenna Thompson has taught
the JAG-K class at Great Bend Middle School. The class is open to both seventh
and eighth graders.


"I love seeing the growth from the beginning of the year to now," said Thompson. "I've looked back at some of the projects we have done and just seeing how much they change in a year. It's crazy."

There are currently 54 students enrolled in the JAG-K course at the middle
school. The course also explores career opportunities and practices soft
skills, preparing students to successfully transition to post-secondary
education, military service or into the workforce.


"The cool thing about this program is that once students are in it, they're in it the rest of their academic career," said Thompson. "We even follow through a year after they graduate. It allows us to check in to see if they're on the right path in whatever they chose whether that be college, military, work or a trade school. We're there another year so they have that support."

Great Bend JAG-K students are preparing the Career Development Competition
(CDC) in Hutchinson on April 9. All of the students will compete
in at least one event.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

On Sunday, March 30, at approximately 12:09 a.m., Barton County Communications received a 911 emergency call from two citizens inside their vehicle who were advising they were being chased by a male and female in a lifted Red Chevy Silverado with black rims. The reporting parties advised that the male occupant in the Silverado was armed and brandishing a handgun. 

Barton County Communications advised both the Great Bend Police Department and the Barton County Sheriff's Office of the ongoing incident and both departments began to search for the vehicles. During the call, the male subject in the Silverado fired the handgun, which was heard by the Communications Dispatcher and was recorded on the dispatch tapes. The reporting parties advised they lost sight of the vehicle. 

While officers and deputies continued to search for the suspect vehicle, a deputy with the Barton County Sheriff's office located the vehicle in the McDonald's drive through. Upon the arrival of officers from both agencies, a high-risk traffic stop was conducted. At that time, both the male driver and female passenger were removed from the vehicle, and officers on scene were notified of a child in the vehicle. After securing both adults from the vehicle, the driver’s handgun was located and seized.

Jose Espino-Cruz, age 19, was arrested for attempted murder, aggravated child endangerment, felony criminal damage and unlawful discharge of a firearm. Espino-Cruz was transported to the Barton County Jail where he was held in lieu of a $500,000 bond.

Crude prices are on the rise in advance of tariffs and threatened tariffs. On Friday the near-month NYMEX contract for light sweet crude settled at $69.36 per barrel, up 56 cents on the day, and eight cents a barrel higher than a week ago. But tariff deadlines and new threats of possible tariffs on Russian oil sent crude prices higher. By lunchtime Monday NYMEX crude was trading over $71 a barrel, up more than two dollars on the day. The expiring Brent contract for May was fetching just under $75 a barrel. The June contract was a few pennies higher.US crude production dipped slightly in January, according to the latest monthly release from the government. The Energy Information Administration reports total production nationwide of 407,537,000 barrels in January, which is down nearly 10-million barrels from the best month ever in December. Output drops more than 23-million barrels from January last year. EIA estimates Kansas output of just over two million barrels in January. That's 67-thousand barrels a day, compared to 72-thousand the month before.&nbsp; The top producing states were all lower. Texas drops 105-thousand daily barrels, pumping just under 5.6 million barrels a day.

Weekly crude production in the US was the fourth-best ever last week. At 13,574,000 barrels per day, output is up nearly half a million barrels a day from a year ago. The Energy Information Administration reports a four-week average over 13-and-a-half million daily barrels for a third week in a row. Cumulative production is just a few barrels shy of that mark.

The government added another 300-thousand barrels to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, now topping 396 million barrels. That's up more than 33 million barrels from a year ago. Commercial crude stockpiles were down 3.3 million barrels to 433.6 million barrels as of March 21st. That's about five percent below the five year average.

The US Energy Information Administration reports total crude imports last week increased by 810,000 barrels a day, after dropping 1.3 million the week before. Net imports are also higher.&nbsp; Crude imports from our northern neighbor averaged just under four million barrels a day in the week through March 21, up 849,000 daily barrels from the week before. Total crude imports averaged 6.2 million daily barrels. Exports were up slightly to 4.6 million.&nbsp; That makes the US a net crude importer by nearly 1.6 million barrels a day...up from 741,000 last week.

The rig count from Baker Hughes is 592, up one gas rig cut down two oil rigs. Ohio was up one rig while Pennsylvania drops one rig. New Mexico was also down one rig from last week.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service is up three at eight rigs east of Wichita, and up three at 15 rigs in Western Kansas.&nbsp; The tally is up nearly 92 percent from a month ago, but down 28 percent from a year ago. Drilling was underway on Friday on one lease in Ellis County, one in Barton County, two in Stafford County and three in Finney County.

Operators completed 25 new wells in Kansas in the week though March 27th. That's 294 wells so far this year, compared to 278 through the last week in March last year.

Independent Oil and Gas Service reports eleven new well completions in eastern Kansas, and 14 west of Wichita. Kansas regulators gave their okay to 15 new drilling locations. That's 173 new permits so far this year, compared to 210 a year ago.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Barton County Health Department will be hosting a Measles Prevention Clinic on Saturday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. This event is open to the public and designed to support community health by providing access to the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine.

During the clinic, individuals will have the opportunity to:

· Access educational materials with accurate, up-to-date information about measles prevention

Measles is a highly contagious disease, but it is also highly preventable through vaccination. This clinic offers a convenient way for residents to ensure they are protected and informed.

No appointment is necessary. Community members of all ages are encouraged to attend.

Measles prevention clinic in Great Bend this Saturday

Work will resume soon on asphalt crack repair projects in Rice and Rush counties that were paused last season due to weather concerns.

One of the Kansas Department of Transportation projects will be on U.S. 56 in Rice County, from the Lyons east city limits to the Rice/McPherson county line. The length is 13 miles.

The other KDOT project will be on U.S. 183 in Rush County, from the Pawnee/Rush county line to the south city limits of La Crosse. The length is 10 miles.

The work is expected to begin around April 3 starting in Rice County, to be completed around April 11. The Rush County project will follow that, with both projects done by early May, weather permitting.

During the work, traffic will be guided by a pilot car and flaggers, and motorists should be prepared to slow down and stop and expect up to a 15-minute delay.

KDOT urges motorists to stay alert and follow posted signs in all work zones.

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (3/28 - 3/30)

The annual Easter Egg Hunt, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Great Bend, is set for 9:30 a.m., Saturday, April 19. The hunt will be at the Kiwanis walking track on the north side of Veterans Memorial Park, just off McKinley Street in Great Bend. 

The event is open to all area children from preschool through 6th grade. There will be lots of Easter eggs and candy for all. The Kiwanis Easter Egg Hunt is free for all to attend. Age groups are separated into sections, and candy will be scattered across Veterans Park for them to find. 

The Easter Bunny will be present for photos. At 9:30 a.m., the police siren will sound and the Easter Egg hunt will begin.

The Barton County Landfill uses portable litter fences to help control
litter from blowing outside of the dumping area. Barton County Solid Waste
Director Jennifer Hamby said several of the litter fences are in disrepair and need
to be replaced. 

While receiving two bids for new litter fences, Hamby said the
quality seemed better from Metta Technologies over tarpARMOR.


"The Metta Technologies, all the netting, the top, back and sides are all strong galvanized steel welded wire with black vinyl coating," said Hamby. "With the tarpARMOR, the top netting is actually plastic."

With the few remaining fences the Landfill has, staff positions them in a location
to catch the trash. If a strong wind shifts, there are not enough fences to
contain all of the trash from blowing out, causing staff to pick up the trash.


Hamby said even though Metta Technologies’ bid was over $9,000 more, the
quality is worth it.


"I spoke with Saline County, who has had both of these," said Hamby. "They said the tarpARMOR is very cheaply made. It didn't even last the three-year warranty. The Metta ones they have left have been there for 20 years or better."

The Barton County Commission approved the purchase of 10 new litter fences from

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information (LMI) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8% in February. This is unchanged from 3.8% in January and an increase from 3.2% in February 2024. The labor force participation rate for Kansas decreased to 67.2% in February, according to a media release from the KDOL.

The unemployment rate in Barton County is up from 4 percent in January to 4.1 percent in February. Pawnee County saw a similar increase from 3 to 3.1 percent. The rate in Ellsworth County is up from 3.4 to 3.7 percent.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 1,100 from January. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs decreased by 500 over the month, while government increased by 1,600. The largest job gains in the private sector were in construction (+700 jobs) and professional and business services (+500 jobs). The largest decrease was in trade, transportation and utilities (-800 jobs).

Since February 2024 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have increased by 3,800. This change is due to a decrease of 100 private sector jobs and an increase of 3,900 government jobs.
