Great Bend High School has had recent success across many sports: football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, cross country, wrestling, and tennis to name a few. On Wednesday, the USD 428 Board of Education opened the door to more success by approving a proposal to begin ESports beginning in November.
During its monthly luncheon, this time held at GBHS, the board heard of several benefits of an ESports program at the school. The stated purpose of the team is to provide a new, diverse opportunity for students to participate in and represent GBHS through interscholastic activities provided by the Kansas State High School Activities Association. There are currently 46 members in the school's ESports club.
In April 2024, KHSHAA's board of directors voted to sanction ESports as an official activity if 24 member schools signed up for the activity. A survey sent out in June 2025 indicated that more than 80 schools had interest in participating this school year.
For the 2025-26 season, KSHSAA and PlayVS will offer various titles, including Rocket League, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Madden football would also be considered if interest levels are high enough.
With Wednesday's approval, GBHS will now accept sign-ups for the new activity. Practices will be held from Nov. 17 through Nov. 28, and the regular season will spread across six weeks from Dec. 1 through Jan. 19, 2026. In-person state championships will be held Jan. 30 with Jan. 31 reserved as an extra day, if necessary.
