The nation honors veterans every day, but especially on Veterans Day on Nov. 11. Barton County Resolution 2022-08 allows decorations to be placed on graves at county cemeteries seven days prior to a holiday, and they must be removed seven days after. Commission Chair Tricia Schlessiger reminded the public of that resolution during Tuesday's meeting.
"Barton County will not be responsible for the loss or damage to any appropriate ornamental items left on any lot, grave, or any other part of memorial parks or cemeteries during the listed holiday periods," she said.
The resolution applies to the Golden Belt and Hillcrest Memorial Parks and Cemeteries, which are maintained by the county. All grave decorations not in a vase may be displayed only seven days before and after the holiday. After the seven days, county employees will not attempt to find items that have been removed.
Various Veteran Day activities are scheduled around Barton County on Nov. 11. Ellinwood Grade School will hold its veterans breakfast at 8:15 a.m. in the grade school library, followed by an assembly at Ellinwood High School at 9 a.m. The University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus is sponsoring a free breakfast from 7-9:30 a.m. in the Burnside Room at the Great Bend Rec Center, 1214 Stone Street. Various other ceremonies are planned to honor local veterans.
