GBRC: Stop 'N Learn - Preparing for spring bulbs

Though we often think of soil testing as a spring chore, fall can be a better time. Soil-testing laboratories are often very busy during the spring resulting in a longer turnaround from submission to recommendations. Also, soils in the spring are often waterlogged, making taking samples difficult. If your soil test suggests more organic matter, fall is a much better season because materials are more available than in the spring (tree leaves), and fresher materials can be used without harming young tender spring-planted plants.​

Begin by taking a representative sample from at least six locations in the garden or lawn. Each sample should contain soil from the surface to about 6 to 8 inches deep. This is most easily done with a soil sampler. Many K-State Research and Extension offices have such samplers available for checkout. If you don’t have a sampler, use a shovel to dig straight down into the soil. Then shave a small layer off the back of the hole for your sample. Mix the samples together in a clean plastic container and select about 1 to 1.5 cups of soil. This can be placed in a plastic container such as a resealable plastic bag.

Take the soil to your county extension office to have tests done for a small charge at the K-State soil-testing laboratory. A soil test determines fertility problems, not other conditions that may exist such as poor drainage, poor soil structure, soil-borne diseases or insects, chemical contaminants or damage, or shade with root competition from other plants. Several years ago, I saw a need in this area for people trained to assist Medicare recipients who wanted to review their prescription drug plan during open enrollment. As trained SHICK (Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas) counselors, my husband John, and I can help Medicare recipients take a look at their Part D (Prescription Drug Plan) and hopefully find them a more affordable plan. We have several other SHICK counselors serving area residents through the RSVP office, so we hope to be able to keep up with the calls.

The Open Enrollment Period begins October 15th and runs through December 7th. Plan costs and coverage change each year, so everyone with Medicare should check to make sure their plan still meets their health needs and budget. If you would like to check out the website for yourself, simply go to Medicare.gov and click on Part D Prescription Drug Plans.

If you are unable to do an internet search, feel free to give me a call at the Extension office. We can set up an in-person SHICK appointment or, if you prefer, we can help you by phone. Those wishing to complete their enrollment by phone will need to call my office at (620)793-1910. I will send you a letter describing the procedure along with a Medicare prescription drug coverage worksheet. When you return that worksheet to my office, we will input your information and let you know your options for your Part D and assist you with signing up.

KRUG: Medicare open enrollment begins soon

The practice of fermenting foods has been around for thousands of years. There are many claims to how fermentation was discovered, but now, every culture with access to salt, makes some kind of fermented food. The simplicity of this food preservation method coupled with its unique flavors and reported health benefits has made fermenting food popular worldwide. Today there seems to be a renewed interest in preparing fermented foods at home.

There are two main methods of fermenting vegetables: dry salting and the brine method. Sauerkraut and Kimchi are prepared using the dry salting method. Either method you choose requires that you use non-iodized salt. The fact sheet I wrote focused on the fermentation of vegetables, known as lactic acid fermentation. Fermentation is a process where the natural bacteria found in fresh vegetables utilize the carbohydrates to reproduce and excrete lactic acid, which preserves the vegetables and creates a characteristic tangy flavor.

There are many health benefits of including a small amount of fermented food in your healthy daily meal plan. Articles in the Tufts University newsletter reinforce that consuming fermented foods help to create good bacteria in your gut which aids in digestion and bolsters the immune system. A book, titled, “Fiber Fueled” by gastroenterologist, Will Bulsiewicz, delivers a powerful message about optimizing your microbiome by including fermented foods.

Free fermenting vegetables program in Hoisington

National 4-H Week is just around the corner, and the Barton County
Commission approved a proclamation identifying the week of Oct. 3 - Oct. 9 and encouraging all
citizens to recognize 4-H for the impact it makes by empowering youth with
skills they need to lead for a lifetime. 

Michelle Beran, 4-H Youth Development
agent for the Cottonwood Extension District, said 4-H members have recently adapted their
programs because of COVID-19. "We worked with the Barton County Fair Association this summer to hold a great fair," said Beran. "While it looked a little different, 4-H members were active in a wide range of projects." 
The annual 4-H barbecue will be held Oct. 10 at the old 4-H
ground on S. US 281 Highway with dine-in and carry-out options.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

"Many people think you have to have livestock to be in 4-H, but I'm happy to remind them we have projects from reading to rockets," said Beran.

The proclamation stated 4-H is America's largest youth development organization, having supported almost six million youth across the country.

Announcement that the Conservation Awards Program will again be held in Barton County was received today by Alicia Boor, Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Agent representing Barton County. 

Boor has been asked to serve as chairman of a committee to select candidates for awards. 

"This program is being sponsored by the Kansas Bankers Association (KBA)," said Boor. "This year the KBA, K-State Research and Extension and the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism are excited to announce six award categories including Energy Conservation, Water Quality, Water Conservation, Soil Conservation, Windbreaks and Wildlife Habitat.” 

The purpose of this program is to stimulate a greater interest in the conservation of the agricultural and natural resources of Kansas by giving recognition to those farmers and landowners who have made outstanding progress in practicing conservation on their farms. 

Last year, 197 awards were made to Kansas producers and landowners for their efforts.

Local agriculture conservation awards

Sometimes you will hear people say to let the grass grow tall right before winter sets in. Their reasoning is that the extra foliage will insulate the crown of the plant from the extreme cold of winter. Although this may sound reasonable, in practice it probably does little, if anything, to increase winter hardiness. On the contrary, a canopy that is too high during the winter may lay over and become matted down, leading to an increased incidence of winter diseases such as snow mold.

Turfgrass species vary genetically in their cold tolerance, with warm-season grasses such as bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, and buffalograss being less cold tolerant than the cool-season types such as tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass. Given these differences, cold tolerance is improved by increasing the health of the plants going into the winter, and healthy plants are a result of a sound management program (fertilizing, watering, and mowing) during the spring, summer and fall.The lawn will benefit more from continuing to mow at the recommended height than from trying to gain some insulation against winter cold by allowing it to grow tall.

Here is a list of the recommended mowing height ranges (in inches) for home lawns in Kansas:&nbsp; &nbsp;

Tall fescue: 2.5 -3.5&nbsp; &nbsp; Kentucky bluegrass: 2-3&nbsp; &nbsp; Buffalograss: 2-3&nbsp; &nbsp; Bermudagrass: 1-2&nbsp; &nbsp; Zoysiagrass: 1-2 (Note: Mowing at heights below 1.5 inches requires a reel mower).​

There may be some benefits gained by adjusting mowing heights WITHIN the recommended range at times. WALZ: Should you let your turf grow tall in the fall?

The Great Bend Recreation Commission has some great programs for your child when school is out.&nbsp; 

The Great Bend Recreation Commission and the Cottonwood Extension District Office will be hosting a Babysitting 101 class set for Monday, October 4th, from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Cottonwood Extension District Office (1800 12th&nbsp;St.).&nbsp; This course gives participants the knowledge, skills, and confidence to care for toddlers through school aged children. &nbsp;Topics include safety issues, preventing injuries and illness, basic child care and age-appropriate activities to do with children.&nbsp; Students will also learn how to make a snack for kids.&nbsp; Each student will receive a wealth of information.&nbsp;&nbsp;Pre-registration is required by Wednesday, September 29th.&nbsp; Children must be 11 by the class date.&nbsp; The instructor for this class is Michelle Beran,&nbsp;Cottonwood Extension District 4-H &amp; Youth Development Agent.&nbsp; The entry fee is $10.00.

Also on Monday, October 4th, make plans to join us for the Fall Cheyenne Bottoms Tour.&nbsp; Mandy Kern, KWEC Program Specialist, will be leading a driving tour around our wetland looking for birds like the American White Pelican, Great Blue Heron, Snowy Egret, American Avocet and more!&nbsp; We will also walk out on the dike roads to really immerse ourselves into the habitat.&nbsp; Wear closed toed sturdy shoes.&nbsp; On the hikes, we will collect insects and plants to identify and look at under microscopes.&nbsp; A brief visit to the Kansas Wetlands Education Center will kick-start our adventure.&nbsp; After our Cheyenne Bottoms Tour is over at the KWEC, we’ll enjoy lunch outside the KWEC.&nbsp; Each participant will be required to bring a lunch and beverage in a cooler.&nbsp; After lunch, we’ll load back up on the bus and return to the Activity Center to finish off the day with some other organized activities.&nbsp; Students will be bused by USD 428, so please make sure you fill out a transportation request when your register your child.&nbsp; Participants will be required to wear a mask while being transported by USD 428.&nbsp; Snacks and beverages will be provided in the morning and afternoon.&nbsp; This program is open to children ages 6 – 12 and will be held from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.&nbsp; Pre-registration is required by Wednesday, September 29th.&nbsp; Please drop off and pick up your children at the Great Bend Rec Activity Center (2715 18th&nbsp;St.).&nbsp; The entry fee is $15.00.&nbsp;

 </figure>The Great Bend Recreation Commission has some great programs for your child when school is out.&nbsp; The Great Bend Recreation Commission and the Cottonwood Extension District Office will be hosting a Babysitting 101 class set for Monday, October 4th, from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Cottonwood Extension District Office (1800 12th&nbsp;St.).&nbsp; This course gives participants the knowledge, skills, and confidence to care for toddlers through school aged children. &nbsp;Topics include safety issues, preventing injuries and illness, basic child care and age-appropriate activities to do with children.&nbsp; Students will also learn how to make a snack for kids.&nbsp; Each student will receive a wealth of information.&nbsp;&nbsp;Pre-registration is required by Wednesday, September 29th.&nbsp; Children must be 11 by the class date.&nbsp; The instructor for this class is Michelle Beran,&nbsp;Cottonwood Extension District 4-H &amp; Youth Development Agent.&nbsp; The entry fee is $10.00.Also on Monday, October 4th, make plans to join us for the Fall Cheyenne Bottoms Tour.&nbsp; Mandy Kern, KWEC Program Specialist, will be leading a driving tour around our wetland looking for birds like the American White Pelican, Great Blue Heron, Snowy Egret, American Avocet and more!&nbsp; We will also walk out on the dike roads to really immerse ourselves into the habitat.&nbsp; Wear closed toed sturdy shoes.&nbsp; On the hikes, we will collect insects and plants to identify and look at under microscopes.&nbsp; A brief visit to the Kansas Wetlands Education Center will kick-start our adventure.&nbsp; After our Cheyenne Bottoms Tour is over at the KWEC, we’ll enjoy lunch outside the KWEC.&nbsp; Each participant will be required to bring a lunch and beverage in a cooler.&nbsp; After lunch, we’ll load back up on the bus and return to the Activity Center to finish off the day with some other organized activities.&nbsp; Students will be bused by USD 428, so please make sure you fill out a transportation request when your register your child.&nbsp; Participants will be required to wear a mask while being transported by USD 428.&nbsp; Snacks and beverages will be provided in the morning and afternoon.&nbsp; This program is open to children ages 6 – 12 and will be held from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.&nbsp; Pre-registration is required by Wednesday, September 29th.&nbsp; Please drop off and pick up your children at the Great Bend Rec Activity Center (2715 18th&nbsp;St.).&nbsp; The entry fee is $15.00.&nbsp;A complete list of programs and class details can be found at the GBRC web site at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.greatbendrec.com/" target="_blank">www.greatbendrec.com</a>.&nbsp; Online enrollment is now available on the website. &nbsp;Please contact the Recreation Commission office at 793-3755, ext 110, or stop by the office located at 1214 Stone St. for more information or with any questions you may have.

School is out Oct. 4 GBRC activities   

Kansas 4-H will celebrate its long-standing commitment to community service when members across the state participate in 48 Hours of 4-H Oct 9-10.

Beth Hinshaw, a 4-H youth development specialist in the southeast region, said the annual event wraps up National 4-H Week in the United States.

“4-H has a really long history of young people being involved in their community,” Hinshaw said. “Some of the research from several years ago tells us that 4-Hers in grades 7 and up are nearly four times more likely to make contributions to their communities. And, those in grades 8-12 are two times more likely to be civically active.”

48 Hours of 4-H is a project that encourages clubs in the state to plan a community service project. “It’s not a 48 hour project,” Hinshaw said, “but rather a project that you do sometime during that 48 hour timeframe.”

In the past, Hinshaw said, groups have been very creative in how they have chosen to help their community, including such things as:

· Beautification of the community, such painting equipment in parks, planting flower bulbs, picking up trash and trimming landscapes.

· Collections, such non-perishable food and laundry supplies.

“It’s really about what the 4-H club or group wants to do to serve their community,” Hinshaw said.

“These are the young people that someday they’re going to grow up and be serving their community as adults, as well,” Hinshaw said. “I think we all know that’s the kind of communities we want to live in and enjoy some day… with people who want to make a difference.”

On a local level, Cottonwood Extension District – Barton County 4-H members will be hosting their 4-H BBQ Fundraiser on Sunday, Oct. 10 at the old 4-H grounds between Hoisington and Great Bend. During the meal, the 4-H Clubs will showcase many of the 40 project areas available through Kansas 4-H! Serving is from 11-1:30 and both dine-in and drive-up options are available. This fundraiser supports events, activities, and scholarships for nearly 200 4-H youth! Please plan to join us on Oct. 10.

PROCLAMATION 2021-15: National 4-H Week: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -4-H, as delivered by area Cooperative Extension agencies, has helped thousands of youth become confident, independent, resilient and compassionate leaders. By declaring October 3 – 9, 2021, as National 4-H Week, the Commission will encourage all citizens to recognize 4-H for the significant impact it makes by empowering youth with the skills they need to lead for a lifetime. Michelle Beran, Cottonwood Extension District – Barton County, will be joined by area youth in presenting the proposed Proclamation.

&nbsp; &nbsp;C. JOINT PROCLAMATION 2021-16: A Proclamation in Support of Manufacturing (MFG) Day: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Manufacturing Day (MFG Day) is held on the first Friday in October in order to provide students, parents and the public with information on modern manufacturing. This year, there is a strong emphasis on engaging digital and virtual events throughout the country as manufacturing careers are at the heart of some of the most impactful work being done in response to the pandemic. Megan Barfield, President / CEO, Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, will ask that the Commission join the City of Great Bend in adopting a Proclamation in support of Manufacturing (MFG) Day.

&nbsp; &nbsp;D. COMMISSION: Façade Improvement Grant: Review Applications &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -The Façade Improvement Grant program has available funding. The Commissioners will review multiple applications to determine award amounts up to 75% of eligible project costs, with a maximum award of $20,000. Awards will be given based on the project’s size and visual impact. The program prioritizes retailers and restaurants and project applications that commit more than the minimum required match amount. Sue Cooper, Grant Coordinator, will provide details.

&nbsp; &nbsp;E. PREMIUM PAY FOR COUNTY EMPLOYEES: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -In light of economic uncertainty for and increased risk to Barton County staff due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Commissioners discussed ways to fairly compensate affected employees. This retro-active premium pay schedule, heavily weighted toward lower income workers, includes non-elected, KPERS covered positions for persons employed with Barton County as of January 1, 2021. The proposed schedule includes a monthly proration factor for employees hired later in the year. If approved, it is anticipated that premium pay would be provided in December 2021. Matt Patzner, Human Resources / Finance Director will provide details.

&nbsp; &nbsp;F. RESOLUTION 2021-23: A Resolution Adopting the Barton County Neighborhood Revitalization Plan Effective January 1, 2022: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -The Commission received public comments on its cooperative effort with area taxing districts to promote the revitalization and development of Barton County by stimulating new construction, rehabilitation, conservation or redevelopment through a Neighborhood Revitalization Plan. At this time, Wendy Prosser and Patrick Hoffman will ask that the Commission consider adoption of the Plan under Resolution 2021-23. If adopted, it would then be submitted to area taxing districts for review and approval.

&nbsp; &nbsp;G. BARTON COUNTY NEIGHBORHOOD REVITALIZATION PLAN: Interlocal Agreement: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Should the Commission adopt Resolution 2021-23, it is suggested that an Interlocal Agreement be adopted joining Barton County to area taxing districts under the Plan. Suggested taxing districts include area cities, school districts, recreation commissions, townships, Barton Community College as well as fire, cemetery, hospital, extension, watershed and library districts. Under the agreement, identified districts would be given the option to join. Wendy Prosser and Patrick Hoffman will present details.

&nbsp; &nbsp;H. ROAD AND BRIDGE: Request for Proposal – Vibratory Roller: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -The Road and Bridge Department accepted proposals for one Vibratory Roller until September 8, 2021. Minimum specifications included (1) padded vibratory quick attach roller that is compatible with a Bobcat T76 track loader 74HP. Bobcat of Salina submitted the only bid at $7,973.92. Monies are available in the Road and Bridge Fund for this purchase. Darren Williams will provide details.

Can you believe that in three short months we will be welcoming in a new year? As we enjoy the cooler fall temps, I hope you will find ways to make physical activity part of your daily routine. I found an article from Montana Extension recently that supports my passion for health and wellness, especially as it relates to physical activity.

1) Choose the right activity for you: Different body types do better with different physical activities. Not every body is built for running, but every body can find a way to get fit.

2) Choose the right time: Some of us are naturally morning people; others prefer to be active at the end of the day. Listen to when your body likes to move, and it will be more fun.

3) Choose the right goal: Goals can motivate us if we choose the right one. Some people like the challenge of entering a race; others like to set a goal for a certain number of steps.

4) Choose the right speed: Some people like high-energy activities, like aerobics or line dancing. Others like something slower and calmer, like a yoga class or swimming.

5) Choose the right shoes: Comfort is essential for physical activity. When your feet hurt, it makes activity hard to do. Choose shoes that fit well and that are right for your activity level.

6) Choose the right equipment: Any activity is more fun when it feels good. Bicycles, rackets, and weights all come in different sizes and styles. Choose the right ones for your body.

7) Make it easy: Keep comfortable shoes by the door or in the car, so it is easy to take a walk. Set out comfy clothes the night before, so getting ready for activity is just routine.

8) Join a class: Scheduling a class creates its own routine. Once we get into a new routine, it is easier to stick with it over time. Remember a new habit takes at least 21 days to establish.

9) Do it with friends: When we are accountable to someone else, it helps us get out and be active. You can join a class together or just plan to meet for a neighborhood walk.

10) Keep a record: Research shows that self-monitoring is a key to a healthy weight. You can track your activity in different ways, like minutes per day or steps on a pedometer.

11) Reward yourself: Becoming more active is a gradual process. Give yourself a pat on the back for any increases in physical activity.

12) Make it fun: When we enjoy an activity, we want to make it part of our day. The best physical activity is the one that you will do, because you enjoy it.

KRUG: 12 ways to make physical activity routine

Everyone feels tired now and then, but after a good night’s sleep, you should feel refreshed and ready to face the day. If you still feel drained when it is time to get up, there are possible reasons you do not feel rested. The National Institute on Aging has information available that shares tips on how to get a good night’s sleep.

Adults need seven to nine hours of sleep every night. Sleep is a complicated process. There are multiple parts of the brain that work together to produce signals that prepare your body for sleep. There are also two types of sleep, REM (rapid eye movement) and non-REM. Non-REM sleep happens when your brain wave activity slows down and you are in a deep sleep.

Sleep is so important for many parts of your body. If you get a good night’s sleep you can learn, respond quickly, solve problems, pay attention, make decisions and be creative. If you do not get quality sleep, it may put a strain on relationships, it can increase the chance of falls or accidents, and memory is not as sharp. Getting a good night’s sleep can help protect your mental and physical health, quality of life and safety.

Do you have healthy sleep habits? Do you follow a regular schedule by going to bed and getting up at the same time each day? Do you have a routine to prepare yourself for bedtime each night? Do you keep the room comfortable for sleeping with just the right temperature?

There are also things that you should NOT do before bedtime. Do not nap late in the afternoon. Do not have caffeine late in the day. Do not drink alcohol. Do not watch television or use a computer or tablet in your bedroom. And do not eat large meals within two or three hours of your bedtime.

If you continue to feel tired for weeks at a time, it may be time to see a doctor. He or she can help you find out what is causing your fatigue. Some illnesses and some emotions can cause fatigue. The doctor will ask questions about your daily activity, your diet, your exercise level and your habits before bedtime.

Sleep is a very complex process and it may take some time to diagnosis the problem and the solution. In the meantime, eat a well-balanced diet and start an exercise program. For more information visit www.nia.nih.gov/health

UNRUH: Are you tired?

Kansas State University researchers have completed a study that looks at the potential value of carbon credits – and whether it’s an opportunity for farmers to earn some extra income.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“There are starting to be a few more concrete opportunities for producers to sign up for carbon credits, and especially some opportunities in Kansas right now,” said Micah Cameron-Harp, who is a graduate student in agricultural economics. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Carbon credits refer to a tradable permit or certificate that offsets the emission of one ton of carbon dioxide or another greenhouse gas by the credit holder. Large corporations – like McDonalds and Microsoft – have recently announced voluntary efforts to reduce carbon emissions by contributing to a carbon credit market.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“They’re making corporate pledges to reduce how much they’re emitting,” said KSRE agricultural economist Nathan Hendricks. “They’re going to reduce their emissions, but in order to get to their goals, they’re going to buy some offsets.&nbsp;

Agriculture is one of several industries that could benefit from the offsets sought by corporations. In effect, a farmer could be paid for implementing practices on their land that reduce carbon emissions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“The most common practices that people talk about are no-till, and planting cover crops, but there are others out there,” Cameron-Harp said. “These are practices that sequester carbon from the air and store it in the soil in order to offset carbon emission from the corporations that are buying credits.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Micah Cameron-Harp, a K-State graduate student involved in the study, said the university’s work was geared toward helping farmers better understand how to enter the carbon market. Cameron-Harp said researchers looked at what’s available and analyzed factors that should go into making a decision.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We are taking this abstract marketplace where there are many players and distilling it down to what’s pertinent to a Kansas producer,” Cameron-Harp said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Cameron-Harp said most buyers in the carbon market are paying $15 per carbon removal ton, and the price “is not fluctuating. Right now, there is not an interplay between supply and demand, so that is what you’re going to get at this point in time.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Ultimately, the goal is that this will become a free market,” Cameron-Harp said. “In such a case, we would see the price fluctuate as companies like Microsoft make large commitments. That’s what these marketplaces are hoping to achieve in the next couple years.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Farmers considering getting into the carbon credit should ask some key questions before signing a contract, including:&nbsp;&nbsp;

“There are a lot of factors to consider; it’s not just sign up for the highest payment and go with it,” Hendricks said. “You need to look at the data requirements for each place you go to, and each producer needs to use their best understanding of where this market is going to go.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Late September through October is an excellent time to plant spring-flowering bulbs such as crocus, tulips, and daffodils. These plants need to develop roots in the fall and must meet a chilling requirement over the winter to bloom in the spring.

Choose a planting site that has full sun to partial shade. The ideal soil would be a sandy loam, but even poor soils can be used if organic material such as peat moss, compost, or aged bark is mixed in. For example, heavy clay can be amended by mixing in one-third to one-half organic material. Soil pH should be between 6.0 and 7.0.

Bulbs need good aeration as well as good drainage for proper development. It is best if the bulbs are given 12 inches of prepared soil. If one-third of organic material were added, this would require mixing 4 inches of organic material with 8 inches of soil. Incorporate about 3 pounds of a complete fertilizer such as a 5-10-5 per 100 square feet during preparation or fertilize according to soil test.

Planting depths vary depending on the size of the bulbs. For example, tulips and hyacinths are set about 6 inches deep, and daffodils are put 6 to 8 inches deep. Smaller bulbs are planted shallower. As a rule of thumb, bulbs are planted two to three times as deep as their width. Planting depth is the distance from the bottom of the bulb to the top of the soil. Large bulbs are normally spaced 4 to 6 inches apart, and small bulbs are about 1 to 2 inches. Planting in clumps or irregular masses produces a better display than planting singly.

After placing the bulbs at the proper depth, replace half the soil and add water. This will settle the soil around the bulbs and provide good bulb/soil contact. Add the remaining soil and water again. Although there will be no top growth in the fall, the roots are developing, so the soil needs to be kept moist but not soggy. Mulch can be added after the soil has frozen to prevent small bulbs from being heaved out of the soil by alternate freezing and thawing. September is designated as Food Safety month, so it is a perfect time to share information about this important topic. Consumers of all ages need to improve their safe food handling practices. With only 61 percent of Americans following all package cooking instructions, and even less using a food thermometer (19 percent), this is a unique opportunity to help educate and inform consumers to “Cook It Safe.”

Pre-prepared meals are fast and convenient by design, but not taking the time to read the cooking instructions on the package can lead to undercooking. Not all of these foods can be cooked to a safe temperature in a microwave. Food poisoning can occur when food is not cooked evenly to a safe internal temperature high enough to destroy harmful bacteria that might be present.

Frozen convenience foods may appear ready-to-eat and simply in need of being reheated, but many contain raw products that must be fully cooked before eating. Reading the product’s label should inform consumers whether the product needs to be reheated or thoroughly cooked. The package may convey, for example, that the product contains uncooked meat or poultry. If the package instructions for microwave cooking call for covering or stirring the food or allowing a “stand time” do not ignore these steps, which contribute to even cooking. Covering food traps moisture and raises the temperature, while stirring prevents cold spots where bacteria can survive. “Stand time” is the time between removal from a heat source and consumption, when food continues to

cook for a few minutes. Skipping these key parts of cooking instructions may allow bacteria to survive and lead to foodborne illness.

Get in the habit of using a food thermometer to ensure a safe internal temperature. It is a good idea to test the food in several places. This applies when cooking in microwaves or any other heat source. The safe internal temperatures that will ensure bacteria are killed in different types of food are:

· Whole cuts of fresh beef, pork, veal and lamb: 145 degrees F, followed by three minutes of stand time.

· Ground beef, pork, veal, and lamb: 160 degrees F.

· All poultry, ground or whole: 165 degrees F.

· Leftovers and casseroles: 165 degrees F.

· Hotdogs and reheated deli meats: 165 degrees F or steaming hot.

KRUG: Cook it safe when preparing convenience foods

September is Baby Safety Month so this is a perfect time to review these 10 safety tips from Safe Kids and the CDC.

1. Check to make sure your car seat is installed correctly. The Safe Kids Worldwide provides virtual inspections and there are specific videos on how to correctly install a car seat. Local law enforcement officers may check car seats if you have questions about the installation.

2. Before putting your baby down for the night, remember that a firm mattress and fitted sheet are all you need for your baby’s crib. Remove blankets and toys from the crib and use a sleep sack on colder nights.

3. Place your baby’s crib and other furniture away from windows to avoid falls or strangulation. Your baby is safer without any strings or cords within reach.

4. Remember to set your water heater to 120° F to avoid scalds. make sure that the water never gets to a point that could injury the baby.

5. Install working smoke alarm AND a carbon monoxide alarm on every level of your home, and in all sleeping areas. This is an important tip for not just baby safety, but family safety as well. test the alarms regularly to make sure they work.

6. Use approved safety gates at the tops and bottoms of stairs and attach them to the wall, if possible. Remember to read the manufacturer’s instructions and warning labels to make sure you have the right gate for your needs.

7. Store poisonous items out of reach or use safety locks on cabinets within reach. These items also include liquid packets for the laundry and dishwasher. It only takes a few minutes, and it gives you one less thing to worry about. Put the poison help number, 1-800-222-1222, on or near every home telephone and save it on your cell phone.

8. Install stops on dresser drawers to prevent them from being pulled all the way out. Multiple open drawers can cause the weight to shift, making it easier for a dresser to fall.

9. Keep the toilet lids closed and use toilet seat locks to prevent drowning. It’s also a good idea to keep doors to bathrooms and laundry rooms closed.

10. And, last but not least, see the world from a child's point of view. Get on the floor, on your hands and knees so that you are at your child's eye level. Look for and remove small items. We know that babies will put anything and everything in their mouths. Remove everything that a child might choke on. The main thing is to always stay with the child and never leave a baby unattended.

UNRUH: Baby Safety Month

Armyworms are so-called because they can march across fields or landscapes in large groups. That seems to be happening this year as there are reports of armyworms feeding on tilled volunteer wheat fields, to the point they have taken out a lot of the volunteer wheat, even turning it white in some fields.

That brings up the question from farmers: Is this something I should be worried about, and possibly spray an insecticide for? The short answer is no.

I visited with J.P. Michaud, entomologist at the Ag Research Center in Hays. Most fall armyworms should be nearing the end of their last generation this year, meaning once they reach maturity, they will pupate and then emerge as a moth. Then, due to shorter day length (winter coming), they will pack-up and head south for the winter.

However, this could take a few more weeks, possibly more. Primarily, this is due to the sporadic hatching of the last generation of armyworms. The first generation is pretty synchronized, but after that, the following generations develop asynchronously, meaning some larvae are still small while others have finished feeding.

Insecticide seed treatments do not work well against armyworms and other lepidopteran larvae.

The bottom line is early-planted wheat is at the greatest risk. Early-planted fields should be inspected frequently during the first few weeks following emergence. Unless you are planting early for some grazing, it is preferable in our area to plant towards the end of September and into early October. Historically, yield does not decline unless planting occurs after the second week of October.

Early sowing of wheat can lead to several problems, including an increased chance of insect- or mite-transmitted viral diseases, or decreased emergence due to high temperatures. Ideally, growers should consider planting within the optimum window, but, if planting early due to moisture availability or a dual-purpose system, growers should consider selecting wheat varieties with tolerance to the major yield-reducing factors in their respective region. Growers might also consider a seed treatment with both fungicides and insecticides if planting wheat early in Kansas.

Young fall armyworms are ½ to 3/4 inch long, and are 1 ½ inches long at maturity. Body color may vary from green to almost black, but light stripes will be visible along the length of the body. Look for a whitish inverted "Y" on the face. It normally takes 2 to 3 weeks to develop from egg to pupa. The adult is a moth.

Another question that may arise is, do I still need to spray or till under the volunteer wheat that had heavy armyworm feeding? I would err on the side of caution and still do so, as I doubt that every single volunteer wheat plant is completely dead. Also, please keep in mind that all volunteer wheat should be killed within a mile of any new planting, ideally two weeks beforehand. Alfalfa will quit growing after the first hard freeze (when temperatures reach below 26°F), which in Kansas occurs on average around October 15, but can be as early as October 1 or late as November 1. The decision should be weather-based at this time of the year because the timing of the last two cuttings impacts the winter survival and productivity of the stand in the following year.&nbsp;

The last cutting, prior to fall dormancy, should be made based on expected crown regrowth rather than one-tenth bloom because of the decreasing photoperiod. The last cutting should be made so there will be 8 to 12 inches of foliage, or 4 to 6 weeks of growth time, before the first killing frost. This should allow adequate time for replenishment of root reserves. Which means the second to final cutting should occur around September 1.&nbsp;

At this stage of the growing season, alfalfa plants need to store enough carbohydrates to survive the winter. If root reserves are not replenished adequately before the first killing freeze in the fall, the stand is more susceptible to winter damage than it would be normally. That could result in slower greenup and early growth next spring, and in some cases stand loss due to winter kill. The potential of the alfalfa crop to grow new foliar tissue in the spring is greater with greater root reserves in the fall, thus root reserves this fall are the main driver of next crop’s yield and quality.&nbsp;

The final cutting should occur right after the first killing freeze, before too many of the leaves have dropped. Producers should be prepared to enter the fields as soon as soil moisture conditions allow. After a killing freeze, the remaining forage (if any) can be hayed safely. However, the producer should act quickly because the leaves will soon drop off.&nbsp;

Consider soil sampling alfalfa fields now&nbsp;

Late fall is also a great time of the year to soil sample alfalfa ground. This timing allows for an accurate assessment of available soil nutrients and provides enough time to make nutrient management decisions before the crop starts growing in the spring. Key soil tests include pH, phosphorus, and potassium, and to a lesser extent, sulfur and boron. In particular, potassium is highly related to winter survival so it’s important to make sure to have optimum range of potassium in soil before entering the winter. When sampling for immobile nutrients, sampling depth should be six inches, while mobile nutrients (sulfur) should be sampled to 24 inches. Based on the soil test, a fertility program can be established to assure nutrient replenishment and maintain hayfield productivity.&nbsp;

BOOR: Last cut of alfalfa 

A year ago, I was excited to share information from the KSRE Fact sheet I wrote titled, “Taking a New Look at Fermented Foods.” The practice of fermenting foods has been around for thousands of years. There are many claims to how fermentation was discovered, but now, every culture with access to salt, makes some kind of fermented food. The simplicity of this food preservation method coupled with its unique flavors and reported health benefits has made fermenting food popular worldwide. Today there seems to be a renewed interest in preparing fermented foods at home.

I am hosting a fermentation workshop next week and have a couple of spots open if you would like to participate in this hands-on class. For the $25 registration fee you will receive the ingredients to make a 1-quart jar of Kimchi (a popular Korean condiment) and equipment to continue making fermented vegetables in a wide mouth canning jar. The workshop is set for Thursday, September 16th, from 6-9 PM.

When fresh beets, radishes and carrots started showing up at the Farmer’s Market, we found a recipe for brining small chunks of these vegetables. Two weeks in our cool, dark basement, was all it took before we could enjoy this tasty ferment.

I continue to read about the health benefits of including a small amount of fermented food in your healthy daily meal plan. Articles in the Tufts University newsletter reinforce that consuming fermented foods help to create good bacteria in your gut which aids in digestion and bolsters the immune system. A book, titled, “Fiber Fueled” by gastroenterologist, Will Bulsiewicz, delivers a powerful message about optimizing your microbiome by including fermented foods.

Sauerkraut and Kimchi are prepared using the dry salting method. Either method you choose requires that you use non-iodized salt.
