There are three names that will appear on the ballot for the Nov. 2 General Election for the Cottonwood Extension District board. One of the three,
Alexa (Lexi) Straub, was able to attend the League of Women Voters candidate forum
last Thursday in Great Bend. 

Straub is a 19-year-old from Ellinwood that has
been heavily involved in 4-H and wants to keep her connections with the
Extension District, despite aging out of 4-H soon. 
"In 4-H, the biggest thing you learn is that showing up does more for you than anything else," said Straub. "So I'm here today. I showed up. Being able to stay involved in Extension and 4-H would mean everything to me." 
Straub is currently a sophomore at Barton Community College studying marketing.

The Cottonwood District encompasses both Barton County and Ellis County and
extends technical expertise and research findings to help people improve their
homes, families, farms, businesses and communities. 

Straub has served in 4-H
for 13 years. 
"Just being in 4-H, at the county fair, being around livestock and raising livestock gives you that agriculture aspect," said Straub. "I've done everything you can imagine in Kansas State 4-H." 
The other two filings for the Cottonwood Extension District #17 board are Lori Waters
and Rita Stolz. Voters will be asked to elect two.

Barton County 19-year-old running for elected position

Wheatland Electric Cooperative Inc., is giving away a $1,000 Sharing Success grant to an organization located within its service territory for the second year in a row.

Giving Goodness, a charity challenge, begins 8 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 25, and will run through 7:59 a.m. on Nov. 12. The public challenge is run entirely on the cooperative’s official Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/WheatlandElectric/.

Members of the public can help their favorite organization (or other community-based charitable cause) win a $1,000 Sharing Success grant by nominating one or more organizations starting Oct. 25 and then rallying their friends and family during three consecutive rounds of voting on Facebook.

To participate, Facebook users should visit Wheatland’s official Facebook page starting Oct. 25 and tag their favorite local organization or community-based cause in our Giving Goodness social post. The nominee must be an organization that serves members within our service territory and must not have already received a Sharing Success grant during our 2021 grant cycle. (For a complete list of Sharing Success recipients that are ineligible, see below.)

Participants should not only tag their favorite charitable or community-based organization but also tag their friends and family to garner more “likes.” These “likes” will count as individual votes toward the nominated organization. Voting on this first round will run through Nov. 1 at 7:59 a.m.

Starting Nov. 1, four eligible organizations with the most “likes” during the previous round will advance to a Final Four round, where they will square off. Participants can once again vote by “liking” their favorite contender though Nov. 8 at 7:59 a.m.

The top two organizations from our Final Four round will advance and battle for the Giving Goodness title starting Nov. 8.

Voting during the championship round will continue through Nov. 12, ending at 7:59 AM CST. Members are once again asked to root for their favorite organization and rally fellow fans to their cause.

Wheatland Electric giving away a $1,000 Sharing Success grant

Hoses and shallow irrigation lines may be damaged over the winter if water is not drained. If there is a main shut-off valve for the system, close it and then run through the zones to make sure any pressure has a chance to bleed off. Lawn irrigation systems usually have shallow lines. Though some lines may be self-draining, check to be sure there are no manual drains. If manual drains are present, they should be opened. Be sure to map them so they can be closed next spring before the system is pressurized. &nbsp;If there are no manual drains the system should be blown out with an air compressor. &nbsp;Lawn irrigation companies often offer this service.

The League of Women Voters is partnering with the Great Bend Public Library, Eagle Radio, and Great Bend Chamber of Commerce to host a Candidate Forum on Thursday, October 21, 2021, in the lower-level meeting room of the public library, 1409 Williams Street. This forum is open to the public.

The forum will start promptly at 6:15p.m. and end at 7:45p.m. with Mark Mingenback as moderator. Eagle Radio will be living streaming the forum on greatbendpost.com and then archived to watch post forum.

A total of 28 candidates are invited from the following races: Great Bend and Claflin City Councils; Barton Community College Board of Trustees; USD 355, 428, and 431 Board of Education; and Cottonwood Extension District No. 17 Executive Board Members.

Barton County candidate forum this Thursday

Teamwork is an important aspect of youth development. We all have to work with others – at our jobs, in civic organizations, and even when we have fun.

Good teamwork takes communication skills and a willingness to set aside your own success for the good of the group.

A little over a week ago, Barton County 4-H families came together to put on our annual 4-H BBQ and this requires a great deal of teamwork!

We have a great crew who gives up a Saturday morning to prepare the meat with one of those families monitoring the cooking process for the next 24 hours.

We had great groups of families who showed up to pour tea, roll silverware, prepare the sides, set up tables and chairs, and stand in the rain to direct traffic, take tickets, deliver meals to the cars. They washed dishes and mopped the floors. If we needed someone in a different role, they quickly adjusted and moved to where they were needed.

In addition, most of the clubs set up informational displays about many of the nearly 40 project areas offered by Kansas 4-H.

In addition to the 4-H families, we appreciate the teamwork of several local organizations which include Moeder Oil, KFC, Town &amp; Country Supermarket, Barton Community College, the Barton County Fair Association, Ellinwood Packing, and several individuals which include Aaron Maresch, Kevin Arnberger, and Aaron Spanier. We also appreciate the media, chambers of commerce, libraries, and rec centers who shared information to help make this event a success. You have all set a great example of community teamwork!

BERAN: Teamwork in action

October is National Emotional Wellness Month. The National institute of Health offers tips to improve your emotional mental health. Everyone feels stressed from time to time but it may be hard to recognize the signs and symptoms of stress. Stress is how the body and the brain respond to any demand. The problem is not everyone deals with stress the same way.

Not all stress is bad. Often stress will help motivate us to get something done. Stress may actually help a person get a better grade on a test or win a race. But stress can also build up and causes problems.

Long term stress can harm your health and over a long period of time, it can cause strain on your body and cause serious health problems. This is when learning to manage your emotional wellness is so important. There are ways to manage or handle life’s stresses and adapt to the difficult times.

During the last two years the word resilience has been used quite often. People who are emotionally well have fewer negative emotions and are able to bounce back after difficult situations.

The first step to improving your emotional health is to develop a more positive mindset by practicing gratitude and spending time with positive people. The second tip is to manage your stress by getting enough sleep, exercising regularly and find an activity that is relaxing to

you. The third important tip is to get quality sleep. Sleep affects both our mental and physical health. Sleep helps you think more clearly, have quicker reflexes and focus better.

Fourth, practice being award of what is happening in the present – all that is going on around and inside of you. Stop and take some deep breaths in through your nose, hold it for a second and then slowly exhale through your mouth. It may be necessary to repeat this throughout the day until you are totally aware of what is happening in your body.

Fifth, if someone you love dies, your world changes. To help cope with this loss, take care of yourself. Talk to a good and caring friend. Be patient with yourself. Grieving is very difficult and mourning just takes time.

The sixth strategy is to strengthen your social connections. This has been particularly difficult over the last year and a half but it is important to find ways to connect to help your emotional wellness. Reach out to your family and friends but make connections with new groups, take a class or volunteer for something you care about. Social connections can greatly influence your emotional well-being.

UNRUH: Improving your emotional wellness

University of Nebraska Extension Educators and Weed Specialist want to make the agriculture industry aware of recent developments regarding the herbicide Roundup™. While variations on the Roundup name have been used for a variety of different herbicides marketed by Bayer (formerly Monsanto), this article discusses only the Roundup formulations that contain glyphosate as their active ingredient. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), in its glyphosate interim registration review, published in January 2020, found “that there are no risks to human health from the current registered uses of glyphosate and that glyphosate is not likely to be carcinogenic to humans.” In 2021, the European Union’s (EU) Assessment Group on Glyphosate (AGG) determined that when used according to label directions, “a classification of glyphosate with regard to carcinogenicity is not justified.”

Other regulatory agencies have come to similar conclusions, indicating that when used properly and according to directions, glyphosate poses little risk to human health.

Over the past several years, however, glyphosate has been the subject of much litigation after the International Agency for Research on Cancer found it to be “probably carcinogenic to humans” in a hazard assessment that did not consider real-world exposure levels.

Bayer has recently announced steps it plans to take in an effort to put Roundup litigation behind it:

· Petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court in August to review Hardeman v. Monsanto, in which the plaintiff was awarded monetary damages after alleging Roundup caused his non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. If the Court were to grant review, it would likely render a final verdict sometime in 2022.

· Plans to replace its glyphosate products in the lawn and garden market with products containing alternative active ingredients. According to Bayer, “This move is being made exclusively to manage litigation risk and not because of any safety concerns.” The company expects this process to begin in 2023. Glyphosate formulations for the professional and agricultural sectors will remain available. This means that while Bayer will stop selling glyphosate products at the average box store, the chemistry will still be available to farmers and trained professionals.

As a crop protection tool, glyphosate is invaluable. To continue the safe and effective use of Roundup products in the market, Bayer plans to hold discussions with US EPA regarding labels to assist consumers in making informed decisions when purchasing and applying Roundup products. The company will also set up a new website with scientific studies regarding Roundup and its safety. Bayer is exploring a Scientific advisory composed of scientific experts that are not affiliated with Bayer to review scientific information on safety regarding Roundup.

CAMPBELL: Update on Roundup brand herbicides

Pruning in August can stimulate new growth that is less hardy during the winter. &nbsp;But what about pruning at this time of year? &nbsp;

Woody plants move sugars and other materials from the leaves to storage places in the woody portions of the plant just prior to leaf fall and we would like to maximize those stored energy reserves. &nbsp;Even pruning later in the fall can cause a problem by reducing the cold hardiness of woody plants. &nbsp;

Dr. Rich Marini at Penn State Extension has written, “Based on everything that has been published we can conclude that woody plants do not attain maximum cold hardiness when they are pruned in the fall. Trees are affected more by heavy pruning than light pruning.” &nbsp;However, this does not mean that woody plants pruned in the fall will necessarily suffer winter damage. &nbsp;

In most cases, I think we can get away with the adage of “prune whenever your pruners are sharp.” &nbsp;However, damage can occur if we have a sharp drop in temperature before plants are completely hardened off. &nbsp;Also, marginally hardy plants are more susceptible to winter damage, especially if pruned in the fall. &nbsp;Though light pruning and removal of dead wood are fine this time of year, you may want to delay severe pruning until spring.

Consider pruning to be “light” if 10% or less of the plant is removed. Deadwood does not count in this calculation. &nbsp;Keep in mind that even light pruning of spring-blooming shrubs such as lilac and forsythia will reduce flowers for next year. We normally recommend that spring-bloomers be pruned after flowering.​Shrubs differ in how severely they can be cut back. Junipers do not break buds from within the plant and therefore should be trimmed lightly if you wish to keep the full shape. Overgrown junipers should be removed. On the other hand, there are certain shrubs that can be pruned back severely during the spring. 

Rejuvenation is the most severe type of pruning and may be used on multi-stem shrubs that have become too large with too many old branches to justify saving the younger canes. All stems are cut back to 3- to 5-inch stubs. This works well for spirea, forsythia, pyracantha, ninebark, Russian almond, sweet mock orange, shrub roses, and flowering quince. WALZ: ​Pruning trees and shrubs in the fall

The&nbsp;state’s driver's&nbsp;license&nbsp;bureau will soon be moving out of the Barton County Courthouse. It has been located on the second floor of the courthouse&nbsp;since 2004 when the county agreed to rent the space to the Kansas Department of Revenue which operates the bureau.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Barton County Commission agreed&nbsp;at their weekly meeting&nbsp;on Tuesday to send a letter of termination to the Department of Revenue&nbsp;notifying that agency that the current contract will end in six months.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Commission Chairman Jim Daily&nbsp;said&nbsp;the county has another location that the state can use to issue driver’s licenses.&nbsp;

“It’s not like we’re just&nbsp;throwing them to the curb,” Daily commented. “We have offered them another space in a building that the county owns&nbsp;that is offsite from the courthouse.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Daily was referring to the building that many people remember as&nbsp;Boogaart’s&nbsp;Grocery Store. It is owned by the county and currently houses&nbsp;the Cottonwood Extension District offices at 1800 12th&nbsp;Street.&nbsp;That agency&nbsp;will soon be moving to a new location on west 10th&nbsp;Street in Great Bend.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Commissioner&nbsp;Barb&nbsp;Esfeld&nbsp;told Eagle Radio&nbsp;what the county&nbsp;may do with the space now occupied by the driver’s license bureau.&nbsp;

"We would like to use it for our Treasurer’s&nbsp;Office.&nbsp;They’ve outgrown that area with their work,”&nbsp;Esfeld&nbsp;said. “And&nbsp;the other two uses that we are looking into are the County Clerk’s office during elections...they always need more room...and then the County Appraiser’s Office when they hold their hearings, they could use more room.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

The county currently collects between $20,000 and $24,000 per year for renting the courthouse space to the Department of Revenue. It’s expected the county would receive the same amount&nbsp;if the state chooses to move to&nbsp;the 12th&nbsp;Street&nbsp;building.&nbsp;

Esfeld&nbsp;says the new location would be more user-friendly because it doesn’t have stairs and there is parking closer to the building.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Changes coming to Barton County Courthouse's 2nd floor

Many cattle operations rely on some type of harvested feed to use in the winter months and common among those sources is forage sorghum, millets, sorghum-sudangrass, and sudan. Forages in the sorghum family are prone to two different problems for feeding cattle, nitrate poisoning and prussic acid (hydrocyanic acid, HCN) poisoning. Millet (proso and pearl) do not contain prussic acid but can have nitrates. Prussic acid and nitrate poisoning are easy to get confused because both result in a lack of oxygen availability to the animal and are more likely to occur when the plant is stressed (fertility, hail, drought).

In dry areas of the state, cattle may be removed from pasture early. Bringing hungry cattle into pens with weeds can be very dangerous as the nitrate concentration may be elevated throughout the plant and animal intake high. Manure in corrals can contribute to the elevation of nitrates in the weeds. Elevated nitrates may not result in death but could cause abortions.&nbsp;

The current KSU forage fact sheet on prussic acid poisoning indicates that prussic acid potential dissipates as the forage dries. Additionally, hay or silage that likely contained high cyanide concentrations at harvest should be analyzed before it is fed. This second statement is often forgotten and it’s assumed that when the plant dries, all the cells are ruptured and any HCN is released. To confirm this, we measured dhurrin content in sorghum hay in a study last year. The dhurrin content was stable from 1 to 10 weeks of dry storage. In the plant, dhurrin (the precursor to HCN in sorghum species) and the enzyme that converts it to cyanide, are stored in separate compartments within the cell. When the plant is eaten, the compartments are ruptured, and the cyanide formed and released. Measurement of dhurrin directly is used in some research studies. However, commercial labs do not typically measure dhurrin directly. Rather the procedure includes something to stimulate cyanide release. If hay is made from forages in the sorghum family or other susceptible species, testing for prussic acid in forage that has suffered from drought, hail or fertility issues is advised. Testing is cheap compared to the cost of losing even one animal.&nbsp;

Pawnee Rock has three council members.”&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend and Ellinwood voters will also be&nbsp;voting on sales tax increases.&nbsp;There are contested races for board member positions on all three school boards in the county. Is it possible to plan for the perfect day? I always start the day with a to-do list and the outlook to get a lot done looks great. And then the first situation or problem pops its head into the room.

Whether you are planning for your family or for your day at work, it is still important to plan. Whether you are a morning person or not, it is still important to establish a morning routine. If you help your children practice doing the same thing each morning, it will help them establish a regular morning routine and develop a habit for life.

A recent social media post describes how a typical plan can quickly go astray: “I needed a pair of scissors to finish a project and went to the junk drawer to get them and decided to organize the junk drawer and found another item that did not belong there and went to put it where it belonged and found that the bathroom was a mess and stopped to clean the bathroom counter but found an item there that really needed to be in the bedroom” and the list goes on and on. The distractions that we face each day with phone notifications, email, picking up misplaced items in the house, cleaning off the kitchen counter are endless and suddenly hours have passed and nothing has been crossed off the “to-do” list.

It would take a series of articles or a week of training to teach the steps of organization. Let’s focus on family life first. It is most important to stay positive with your family members. Make a list of what is expected of each person so everyone can be in the vehicle ready to go to school or to work at an established set time. Be patient with the younger children and remember that a good mood and pleasant attitude will make a huge difference in the outcome.

In all reality, the organizing for the morning routine, starts the night before. Help each child lay out on a chair what they will wear to school the next day. Backpacks should be packed and by the door ready to go. If lunches are needed they should be packed in the refrigerator or laying on the counter ready to be packed.

I like to walk through the house each evening and pick up a few things that need to be put away. My house is never spotless but I do feel better if the dishes are in the dishwasher and the kitchen counter is cleaned off and ready for the next meal preparation.

A good evening routine should also include writing out your to-do list for the next day. There are too many things to remember and if it is written down at least it won’t be on your mind when you lay down to go to sleep.

Crossing everything off the to-do list isn’t something that is going to happen every day. There are not many days that it actually happens for me! The important thing is that we do have a plan and that we are willing to adjust the plan until we find what works for our family. Helping your children learn a routine and establish habits will make a big difference in their life.

UNRUH: How can I possibly get all this done?

Perhaps you have heard the saying “You are what you eat.” As I visited with 7th grade students in their Skills for Adolescence class this week, I shared the importance of making healthy food choices now in order to avoid the onset of chronic conditions as they age. They already knew some of the important concepts of avoiding highly processed foods with added fats, sodium, and sugar. Besides making healthy food choices, I emphasized that regular physical activity is necessary to keep their body healthy too.

The My Plate guide for healthy eating encourages us to fill half of our plate with fruits and vegetables. That would be a goal of including five to nine servings of these colorful foods every day. The wide array of vitamins and minerals, plus a healthy dose of fiber, make these food groups popular for anyone wanting to maintain or lose weight. Another food group that needs your consideration is the grain group. Most active teens and adults need around six ounces of grains every day. It is also important to make half of your grain’s whole grains. Whole grains include such foods as brown rice, whole wheat bread or pasta, or whole grain oats to name a few.

The protein group and dairy or calcium rich foods group round out the My Plate icon. Remember that protein can be from animal or plant sources and a serving should fit in the palm of your hand. Protein and calcium rich foods provide the nutrients for our muscles and bones.

The 7th graders got a little wide eyed when I shared a nutrition fact label from a cola type beverage. A twenty-ounce serving has a whopping sixty-five grams of sugar in it. That translates to just over sixteen teaspoons of sugar! Things to check out on other nutrition fact labels included added fats, sodium and whether the food has fiber.

Before my visit ended, we sampled sweet potato, parsnips, and daikon radish sticks that were dipped in freshly made hummus. Most students had never tried those vegetables in their raw form before and were quite surprised how much they liked them. I love connecting with this age group as they gain more independence and make decisions daily about what they are eating and drinking. My hope is that they will remember my short visit with them and consider the healthy options.

 </figure>Perhaps you have heard the saying “You are what you eat.” As I visited with 7th grade students in their Skills for Adolescence class this week, I shared the importance of making healthy food choices now in order to avoid the onset of chronic conditions as they age. They already knew some of the important concepts of avoiding highly processed foods with added fats, sodium, and sugar. Besides making healthy food choices, I emphasized that regular physical activity is necessary to keep their body healthy too.The My Plate guide for healthy eating encourages us to fill half of our plate with fruits and vegetables. That would be a goal of including five to nine servings of these colorful foods every day. The wide array of vitamins and minerals, plus a healthy dose of fiber, make these food groups popular for anyone wanting to maintain or lose weight. Another food group that needs your consideration is the grain group. Most active teens and adults need around six ounces of grains every day. It is also important to make half of your grain’s whole grains. Whole grains include such foods as brown rice, whole wheat bread or pasta, or whole grain oats to name a few.The protein group and dairy or calcium rich foods group round out the My Plate icon. Remember that protein can be from animal or plant sources and a serving should fit in the palm of your hand. Protein and calcium rich foods provide the nutrients for our muscles and bones.The 7th graders got a little wide eyed when I shared a nutrition fact label from a cola type beverage. A twenty-ounce serving has a whopping sixty-five grams of sugar in it. That translates to just over sixteen teaspoons of sugar! Things to check out on other nutrition fact labels included added fats, sodium and whether the food has fiber.Before my visit ended, we sampled sweet potato, parsnips, and daikon radish sticks that were dipped in freshly made hummus. Most students had never tried those vegetables in their raw form before and were quite surprised how much they liked them. I love connecting with this age group as they gain more independence and make decisions daily about what they are eating and drinking. 2022-2023 District High School Football assignments

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will be hosting a free Stop ‘N Learn session titled “Preparing For Spring Bulbs” on Wednesday, Oct. 6, from 12:00 – 1:00 pm at the Great Bend Rec Activity Center (2715 18th&nbsp;Street).&nbsp; Are you someone who loves bulbs or a splash of spring color?&nbsp; Flowering bulbs like daffodils, tulips, crocus, and allium are some of the earliest flowers to appear each year.&nbsp; Join us and learn about the planning, planting, and maintenance of these desirable spring-flowering bulbs.

The presentation will also be available on the Great Bend Rec Facebook page as a live event.&nbsp; Lauren Walz, Cottonwood Extension District Horticulture Agent, will be the speaker for the program.

Though we often think of soil testing as a spring chore, fall can be a better time. Soil-testing laboratories are often very busy during the spring resulting in a longer turnaround from submission to recommendations. Also, soils in the spring are often waterlogged, making taking samples difficult. If your soil test suggests more organic matter, fall is a much better season because materials are more available than in the spring (tree leaves), and fresher materials can be used without harming young tender spring-planted plants.​

Begin by taking a representative sample from at least six locations in the garden or lawn. Each sample should contain soil from the surface to about 6 to 8 inches deep. This is most easily done with a soil sampler. Many K-State Research and Extension offices have such samplers available for checkout. If you don’t have a sampler, use a shovel to dig straight down into the soil. Then shave a small layer off the back of the hole for your sample. Mix the samples together in a clean plastic container and select about 1 to 1.5 cups of soil. This can be placed in a plastic container such as a resealable plastic bag.

Take the soil to your county extension office to have tests done for a small charge at the K-State soil-testing laboratory. A soil test determines fertility problems, not other conditions that may exist such as poor drainage, poor soil structure, soil-borne diseases or insects, chemical contaminants or damage, or shade with root competition from other plants. Several years ago, I saw a need in this area for people trained to assist Medicare recipients who wanted to review their prescription drug plan during open enrollment. As trained SHICK (Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas) counselors, my husband John, and I can help Medicare recipients take a look at their Part D (Prescription Drug Plan) and hopefully find them a more affordable plan. We have several other SHICK counselors serving area residents through the RSVP office, so we hope to be able to keep up with the calls.

The Open Enrollment Period begins October 15th and runs through December 7th. Plan costs and coverage change each year, so everyone with Medicare should check to make sure their plan still meets their health needs and budget. If you would like to check out the website for yourself, simply go to Medicare.gov and click on Part D Prescription Drug Plans.

If you are unable to do an internet search, feel free to give me a call at the Extension office. We can set up an in-person SHICK appointment or, if you prefer, we can help you by phone. When you return that worksheet to my office, we will input your information and let you know your options for your Part D and assist you with signing up.

KRUG: Medicare open enrollment begins soon

Join Donna Krug, Cottonwood District Director and Family &amp; Consumer Science Agent, for an educational program about fermenting vegetables. The program is set for Tuesday, Oct. 5, 5:30 p.m. at the Hoisington Library. The program is free and open to everyone.

The practice of fermenting foods has been around for thousands of years. There are many claims to how fermentation was discovered, but now, every culture with access to salt, makes some kind of fermented food. The simplicity of this food preservation method coupled with its unique flavors and reported health benefits has made fermenting food popular worldwide. Today there seems to be a renewed interest in preparing fermented foods at home.

There are two main methods of fermenting vegetables: dry salting and the brine method. Sauerkraut and Kimchi are prepared using the dry salting method. Either method you choose requires that you use non-iodized salt. The fact sheet I wrote focused on the fermentation of vegetables, known as lactic acid fermentation. Fermentation is a process where the natural bacteria found in fresh vegetables utilize the carbohydrates to reproduce and excrete lactic acid, which preserves the vegetables and creates a characteristic tangy flavor.

There are many health benefits of including a small amount of fermented food in your healthy daily meal plan. Articles in the Tufts University newsletter reinforce that consuming fermented foods help to create good bacteria in your gut which aids in digestion and bolsters the immune system. A book, titled, “Fiber Fueled” by gastroenterologist, Will Bulsiewicz, delivers a powerful message about optimizing your microbiome by including fermented foods.

Free fermenting vegetables program in Hoisington 

National 4-H Week is just around the corner, and the Barton County
Commission approved a proclamation identifying the week of Oct. 3 - Oct. 9 and encouraging all
citizens to recognize 4-H for the impact it makes by empowering youth with
skills they need to lead for a lifetime. 

Michelle Beran, 4-H Youth Development
agent for the Cottonwood Extension District, said 4-H members have recently adapted their
programs because of COVID-19. "We worked with the Barton County Fair Association this summer to hold a great fair," said Beran. "While it looked a little different, 4-H members were active in a wide range of projects." 
The annual 4-H barbecue will be held Oct. 10 at the old 4-H
ground on S. US 281 Highway with dine-in and carry-out options.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

"Many people think you have to have livestock to be in 4-H, but I'm happy to remind them we have projects from reading to rockets," said Beran.

Barton County 4-H…not just about livestock

Announcement that the Conservation Awards Program will again be held in Barton County was received today by Alicia Boor, Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Agent representing Barton County. 

Boor has been asked to serve as chairman of a committee to select candidates for awards. 

"This program is being sponsored by the Kansas Bankers Association (KBA)," said Boor. "This year the KBA, K-State Research and Extension and the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism are excited to announce six award categories including Energy Conservation, Water Quality, Water Conservation, Soil Conservation, Windbreaks and Wildlife Habitat.” 

The purpose of this program is to stimulate a greater interest in the conservation of the agricultural and natural resources of Kansas by giving recognition to those farmers and landowners who have made outstanding progress in practicing conservation on their farms. 

Last year, 197 awards were made to Kansas producers and landowners for their efforts.

Local agriculture conservation awards

Sometimes you will hear people say to let the grass grow tall right before winter sets in. Their reasoning is that the extra foliage will insulate the crown of the plant from the extreme cold of winter. Although this may sound reasonable, in practice it probably does little, if anything, to increase winter hardiness. On the contrary, a canopy that is too high during the winter may lay over and become matted down, leading to an increased incidence of winter diseases such as snow mold.

Turfgrass species vary genetically in their cold tolerance, with warm-season grasses such as bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, and buffalograss being less cold tolerant than the cool-season types such as tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass. Given these differences, cold tolerance is improved by increasing the health of the plants going into the winter, and healthy plants are a result of a sound management program (fertilizing, watering, and mowing) during the spring, summer and fall.The lawn will benefit more from continuing to mow at the recommended height than from trying to gain some insulation against winter cold by allowing it to grow tall.

Here is a list of the recommended mowing height ranges (in inches) for home lawns in Kansas:&nbsp; &nbsp;

Tall fescue: 2.5 -3.5&nbsp; &nbsp; Kentucky bluegrass: 2-3&nbsp; &nbsp; Buffalograss: 2-3&nbsp; &nbsp; Bermudagrass: 1-2&nbsp; &nbsp; Zoysiagrass: 1-2 (Note: Mowing at heights below 1.5 inches requires a reel mower).​

WALZ: Should you let your turf grow tall in the fall?

The Great Bend Recreation Commission has some great programs for your child when school is out.&nbsp; 

The Great Bend Recreation Commission and the Cottonwood Extension District Office will be hosting a Babysitting 101 class set for Monday, October 4th, from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Cottonwood Extension District Office (1800 12th&nbsp;St.).&nbsp; This course gives participants the knowledge, skills, and confidence to care for toddlers through school aged children. &nbsp;Topics include safety issues, preventing injuries and illness, basic child care and age-appropriate activities to do with children.&nbsp; Students will also learn how to make a snack for kids.&nbsp; Each student will receive a wealth of information.&nbsp;&nbsp;Pre-registration is required by Wednesday, September 29th.&nbsp; Children must be 11 by the class date.&nbsp; The instructor for this class is Michelle Beran,&nbsp;Cottonwood Extension District 4-H &amp; Youth Development Agent.&nbsp; The entry fee is $10.00.

Also on Monday, October 4th, make plans to join us for the Fall Cheyenne Bottoms Tour.&nbsp; Mandy Kern, KWEC Program Specialist, will be leading a driving tour around our wetland looking for birds like the American White Pelican, Great Blue Heron, Snowy Egret, American Avocet and more!&nbsp; We will also walk out on the dike roads to really immerse ourselves into the habitat.&nbsp; Wear closed toed sturdy shoes.&nbsp; On the hikes, we will collect insects and plants to identify and look at under microscopes.&nbsp; A brief visit to the Kansas Wetlands Education Center will kick-start our adventure.&nbsp; After our Cheyenne Bottoms Tour is over at the KWEC, we’ll enjoy lunch outside the KWEC.&nbsp; Each participant will be required to bring a lunch and beverage in a cooler.&nbsp; After lunch, we’ll load back up on the bus and return to the Activity Center to finish off the day with some other organized activities.&nbsp; Students will be bused by USD 428, so please make sure you fill out a transportation request when your register your child.&nbsp; Participants will be required to wear a mask while being transported by USD 428.&nbsp; Snacks and beverages will be provided in the morning and afternoon.&nbsp; This program is open to children ages 6 – 12 and will be held from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.&nbsp; Pre-registration is required by Wednesday, September 29th.&nbsp; Please drop off and pick up your children at the Great Bend Rec Activity Center (2715 18th&nbsp;St.).&nbsp; The entry fee is $15.00.&nbsp;

School is out Oct. 4 GBRC activities   

Kansas 4-H will celebrate its long-standing commitment to community service when members across the state participate in 48 Hours of 4-H Oct 9-10.

Beth Hinshaw, a 4-H youth development specialist in the southeast region, said the annual event wraps up National 4-H Week in the United States.

“4-H has a really long history of young people being involved in their community,” Hinshaw said. “Some of the research from several years ago tells us that 4-Hers in grades 7 and up are nearly four times more likely to make contributions to their communities. And, those in grades 8-12 are two times more likely to be civically active.”

48 Hours of 4-H is a project that encourages clubs in the state to plan a community service project. “It’s not a 48 hour project,” Hinshaw said, “but rather a project that you do sometime during that 48 hour timeframe.”

In the past, Hinshaw said, groups have been very creative in how they have chosen to help their community, including such things as:

· Beautification of the community, such painting equipment in parks, planting flower bulbs, picking up trash and trimming landscapes.

· Collections, such non-perishable food and laundry supplies.

“It’s really about what the 4-H club or group wants to do to serve their community,” Hinshaw said.

“These are the young people that someday they’re going to grow up and be serving their community as adults, as well,” Hinshaw said. “I think we all know that’s the kind of communities we want to live in and enjoy some day… with people who want to make a difference.”

On a local level, Cottonwood Extension District – Barton County 4-H members will be hosting their 4-H BBQ Fundraiser on Sunday, Oct. 10 at the old 4-H grounds between Hoisington and Great Bend. During the meal, the 4-H Clubs will showcase many of the 40 project areas available through Kansas 4-H! Serving is from 11-1:30 and both dine-in and drive-up options are available. This fundraiser supports events, activities, and scholarships for nearly 200 4-H youth! Please plan to join us on Oct. 10.

PROCLAMATION 2021-15: National 4-H Week: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -4-H, as delivered by area Cooperative Extension agencies, has helped thousands of youth become confident, independent, resilient and compassionate leaders. By declaring October 3 – 9, 2021, as National 4-H Week, the Commission will encourage all citizens to recognize 4-H for the significant impact it makes by empowering youth with the skills they need to lead for a lifetime. Michelle Beran, Cottonwood Extension District – Barton County, will be joined by area youth in presenting the proposed Proclamation.&nbsp; &nbsp;C. JOINT PROCLAMATION 2021-16: A Proclamation in Support of Manufacturing (MFG) Day: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Manufacturing Day (MFG Day) is held on the first Friday in October in order to provide students, parents and the public with information on modern manufacturing. This year, there is a strong emphasis on engaging digital and virtual events throughout the country as manufacturing careers are at the heart of some of the most impactful work being done in response to the pandemic. Megan Barfield, President / CEO, Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, will ask that the Commission join the City of Great Bend in adopting a Proclamation in support of Manufacturing (MFG) Day.&nbsp; &nbsp;D. COMMISSION: Façade Improvement Grant: Review Applications &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -The Façade Improvement Grant program has available funding. The Commissioners will review multiple applications to determine award amounts up to 75% of eligible project costs, with a maximum award of $20,000. Awards will be given based on the project’s size and visual impact. The program prioritizes retailers and restaurants and project applications that commit more than the minimum required match amount. Sue Cooper, Grant Coordinator, will provide details.&nbsp; &nbsp;E. PREMIUM PAY FOR COUNTY EMPLOYEES: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -In light of economic uncertainty for and increased risk to Barton County staff due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Commissioners discussed ways to fairly compensate affected employees. This retro-active premium pay schedule, heavily weighted toward lower income workers, includes non-elected, KPERS covered positions for persons employed with Barton County as of January 1, 2021. The proposed schedule includes a monthly proration factor for employees hired later in the year. If approved, it is anticipated that premium pay would be provided in December 2021. Matt Patzner, Human Resources / Finance Director will provide details.&nbsp; &nbsp;F. RESOLUTION 2021-23: A Resolution Adopting the Barton County Neighborhood Revitalization Plan Effective January 1, 2022: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -The Commission received public comments on its cooperative effort with area taxing districts to promote the revitalization and development of Barton County by stimulating new construction, rehabilitation, conservation or redevelopment through a Neighborhood Revitalization Plan. At this time, Wendy Prosser and Patrick Hoffman will ask that the Commission consider adoption of the Plan under Resolution 2021-23. If adopted, it would then be submitted to area taxing districts for review and approval.&nbsp; &nbsp;G. BARTON COUNTY NEIGHBORHOOD REVITALIZATION PLAN: Interlocal Agreement: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Should the Commission adopt Resolution 2021-23, it is suggested that an Interlocal Agreement be adopted joining Barton County to area taxing districts under the Plan. Suggested taxing districts include area cities, school districts, recreation commissions, townships, Barton Community College as well as fire, cemetery, hospital, extension, watershed and library districts. Under the agreement, identified districts would be given the option to join. Wendy Prosser and Patrick Hoffman will present details.&nbsp; &nbsp;H. ROAD AND BRIDGE: Request for Proposal – Vibratory Roller: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -The Road and Bridge Department accepted proposals for one Vibratory Roller until September 8, 2021. Minimum specifications included (1) padded vibratory quick attach roller that is compatible with a Bobcat T76 track loader 74HP. Bobcat of Salina submitted the only bid at $7,973.92. Monies are available in the Road and Bridge Fund for this purchase. Darren Williams will provide details.V. ENDING BUSINESS – After new items are heard by the Commission, the following items, including announcements, will be heard.&nbsp; &nbsp;A.
