I love to cook but some weeks it is overwhelming to put together nutritious meals; and it’s just my husband and I these days! An article from K-State Extension shares how meal prepping can be a valuable tool to save time, reduce food waste, and meet nutritional goals. It is, however, about finding a system that works for your lifestyle.

Chelsea King, a nutrition, food safety and health agent with K-State Extension’s office in Johnson County, says successful meal prepping starts with a solid plan.

“Often, people feel overwhelmed because they try to create brand-new meals every time they cook,” King said. “Instead, start with go-to recipes that you and your family already enjoy. Once you have those, it becomes easier to build a meal plan around them.”

King encourages home cooks to try one new recipe each week to gradually expand their menus. And don't forget to plan for snacks.

“Snacks are one of those things that are easy to overlook,” she said. “It’s tempting to grab a bag of chips, but with a little prep, you can have nutritious options like energy bites or cut-up fruits and vegetables ready to go.”

Before heading to the grocery store, King suggests checking your pantry, refrigerator and freezer.

“One of the biggest money wasters is buying items you already have,” she said. “Taking inventory before you shop not only saves money, it helps reduce food waste.”

King also recommends eating seasonally. “Seasonal produce is often more nutritious and flavorful,” she said. “It’s usually harvested at its peak and may have been picked just a day or two before you buy it at the farmers market.”

Batch cooking is another time-saver. “If you're making rice, cook extra,” she said. “Roast more vegetables than you need for one meal, and use the leftovers in salads or breakfasts. It saves both time and energy.”

While meal prepping often conjures images of spending an entire Sunday cooking, King says it doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

“If one big prep day doesn’t work for you, break it into smaller sessions during the week,” she said. “Do what fits your schedule, whether that’s prepping every few days or just washing and chopping produce ahead of time.”

Food safety is a key part of any meal prep plan. King emphasizes the importance of clean workspaces, proper handwashing and using food-safe containers, especially for freezing meals.

“Don’t use old yogurt containers for freezer storage — they’re not designed for those temperatures,” she said. “Use freezer-safe containers and always label and date what you store.”

Meal prepping also helps in those inevitable life moments — a late meeting, traffic delay, or a sick child.

“Having emergency meals in the freezer keeps you from relying on expensive fast food,” King said. “It helps you stick to your nutrition goals and saves money.”

“Meal-prepping isn’t a one-size-fits all,” she adds. “Find what works best for you and your family. Start small and focus on preparing meals for one or two days, then add more based on your comfort and needs.”

“The overall goal of meal prepping is to be more efficient in the kitchen, meaning less time spent in the kitchen, and to have nutritious homemade meals all week long.”

BERAN: Meal-prepping a way to eat healthier and save money

Musk thistle is one of 12 noxious weeds in Kansas, infesting over 420,000 acres. It has been reported in nearly every county in Kansas and is found primarily in pastures, rangeland, hay meadows, alfalfa, fallow, roadsides, and waste areas. Under the new Noxious Weed Law, musk thistle is considered a Category C weed. That means it is well established within the state and has an extensive population.&nbsp;

Control efforts should be aimed at reducing or eliminating new populations, and established stands should be managed with any accepted control method.&nbsp; These include mechanical, chemical, and biological approaches.&nbsp; Mechanical control involves removing the entire plant or just the reproductive parts to prevent the plants from producing flowers/seeds.&nbsp; Mowing, digging, and hoeing are common mechanical methods of controlling musk thistle. Several herbicides are labeled for musk thistle control and are discussed below.&nbsp; Biological control requires a permit and needs to be integrated with other methods.&nbsp; Head and crown weevils are found in the state but cannot be transported across state lines.&nbsp; A flower fly is a new candidate species for biological control of musk thistle.

Musk thistle is primarily a biennial or winter annual species. Biennials take two growing seasons to complete their life cycle. Thistles germinating in the spring will spend the entire summer as a rosette, live through the winter, and bolt the next year in May and June. Winter annual plants will germinate with moisture and warm temperatures in the fall, live through the winter, and bolt the following year.

Most people recognize musk thistle during the early summer when the plants are actively blooming. However, musk thistle control is easiest as a rosette.

Fall is an excellent time to spray musk thistle as all are in the rosette growth stage. Another advantage of treatment in the fall is reduced risk of off-target drift. Waiting until most deciduous trees have lost their leaves and most crops are harvested will greatly reduce the likelihood of damage from herbicide drift. A wider window of opportunity for treating musk thistle also exists in the fall. The spraying window in the fall probably extends until the ground is frozen, and the musk thistle plants have shut down activity until warmer temperatures in the spring. Freezing temperatures will start to damage musk thistle plants, with some yellowing and curling of leaves. However, the plants are susceptible to herbicides as long as green tissue exists.

Dry conditions in the fall can reduce control of musk thistle with certain herbicides. Still, studies in Kansas indicated that a fall application of 2,4-D LVE at 2 lbs per acre was more effective (80% control) than a similar rate of 2,4-D amine (49% control). Dicamba + 2,4-D amine at 0.25 + 0.75 lbs per acre and picloram at 0.125 lbs per acre were also effective (&gt;90% control) on musk thistle treated in the fall.&nbsp; Other herbicides that have proven effective include 3-5&nbsp; fl oz/acre aminopyralid (Milestone) and aminopyralid + metsulfuron (Chaparral at 1.5 oz/acre).&nbsp; Products containing picloram and aminopyralid will not only control rosettes treated in the fall but will have enough carryover to control emerging seedlings the following spring.

If you need to treat musk thistle this fall, select the proper herbicide for the job.&nbsp; If possible, select a warm, sunny day to spray. Scattered rosettes can be mechanically removed by digging below the crown. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

BOOR: Fall is a good time to treat for musk thistle

Field bindweed, a perennial vine in the morningglory family, infests millions of acres in the Great Plains. This weed significantly reduces crop yield and quality, reduces land value, interferes with harvest by entangling crop plants, and increases production costs associated with control practices. Earlier research in Hays, KS, over the span of 12 years, indicated that dense stands of field bindweed induced 20% to 50% cereal crop yield loss and 50% to 80% row crop yield reduction.

In North America, field bindweed was first reported in Virginia in 1739. It was possibly brought to Kansas in infested wheat seed from the Ukrainian region of Russia between 1870 and 1875. In 1877 and 1888, it was reported near Topeka and Nebraska, respectively.

Growth and development - seeds near the soil surface will germinate throughout the growing season following rainfall. Seedling emergence primarily occurs in the spring, usually in early to mid-April in Kansas, and continues growing until November or until temperatures drop to 20°F or lower; at these temperatures, its growth may be retarded, but the vines do not die. Seedlings quickly develop a deep taproot and numerous lateral roots about six weeks after emergence. Once lateral roots grow, the plant has a perennial growth habit. Growth ceases during severe drought, but new top growth appears after adequate rainfall. May 15 to June 15 is the heaviest bloom period in west-central Kansas, with the seed usually maturing from June 15 to July 15. However, field bindweed can continue to bloom under favorable conditions and produce seed during July and August.

Roots and food reserves - field bindweed stores a large quantity of carbohydrates deep into its root system, which provides energy for below- and above-ground growth. Roots can have a lateral spread of approximately 10 feet in one season and may penetrate 18 to 20 feet. In two or three growing seasons, roots may extend to a diameter of 17 to 18 feet. In areas with average annual precipitations of 30 inches or more, field bindweed roots have been found 30 feet below the surface. However, on upland soils near Hays, where annual precipitation averages 23 inches, few roots were found below 6 feet. Also, more than 60% of the total weight of roots is reported to be in the top two feet of soil. Buds formed along lateral roots can develop into shoots, which become new plants when they surface.

Dispersal mode - field bindweed spreads by root segments and seeds, both of which can be spread by road maintenance and equipment. Root segments with buds are dispersed by tillage implements and are capable of starting new plants when the soil has adequate moisture.

· Vines, wrapped around tools and those that pass through harvesting equipment, drop field bindweed seeds.

· Seeds are collected with harvested grain and often planted with crop seed.

· Seeds in grain or hay fed to livestock pass through animals undigested and spread with manure.

· Seed is transported by drainage water, birds, animals, machinery, and vehicles.

Management - because field bindweed has long seed viability and tremendous food reserves stored in roots, a long-term management program is required for its successful control. A single application of an herbicide will not eradicate established stands.

CAMPBELL: The world of weeds - field bindweed

Fall is an excellent time to plant a tree. The soils are still warm, allowing the root system to begin to spread out. It also gives the roots time to settle and grow before the stress of the summer heat comes along. Homeowners should plan to do a little research in order to pick the right tree for their particular yard. Choose trees that are adapted to your location. Consider whether the tree produces nuisance fruit, or if there are disease-resistant varieties available. And consider the mature size of the tree to make sure you have enough room.

Here are ten rules for planting trees in a home landscape: 

1. Select the right tree for the site. K-State has a list of trees recommended for Kansas available online.

2. Keep the tree well-watered and in a shady location until planting. When moving the tree, lift it by the root ball or pot – not by the trunk.

3. Before planting, remove all wires, labels, cords or anything else tied to the plant. Plant the tree on solid ground, not in fill dirt.

4. Dig a hole deep enough so that the tree sits slightly above nursery level. The width should be three times the width of the root ball.

5. Remove all containers from the root ball, including plastic and peat pots. Roll burlap and wire baskets back into the hole, cutting as much of the excess as possible.

6. Backfill the hole with soil that was removed. Make sure the soil is loosened, without clods or clumps.

7. Don’t cut back branches of the tree after planting except those that are rubbing or damaged.

8. Water the tree thoroughly, then once a week for the first season if there is insufficient rainfall.

9. Place mulch 2-4 inches deep around the tree, and cover an area 2-3 times the diameter of the root ball.

10. Stake only when necessary; trees will establish more quickly and grow faster if they are not staked.

By following these steps when planting your new tree, you are giving it the best start to be able to thrive in the years to come.

BOOR: Fall is an ideal time for tree planting

Recognizing the significant impact&nbsp;4-H&nbsp;programs have on local youth, the Barton County Commission adopted a proclamation Tuesday morning declaring&nbsp;Oct. 5-11&nbsp;as&nbsp;National 4-H Week.

Michelle Beran, Cottonwood Extension District family and community wellness agent for Barton County, along with four 4-H ambassadors and the new 4-H agent&nbsp;Ben Sims, presented the proclamation to the commissioners. It highlighted 4-H as America's largest youth development organization, connecting millions of young people, educators, volunteers, and alumni across the United States.

Beran let the youth with her do most of the speaking.

Melody Braddy&nbsp;of Hoisington, a delegate to the National 4-H Conference in Washington, D.C., highlighted the opportunity to be a part of the&nbsp;Kansas Youth Leadership Forum (KYLF)&nbsp;and the national conference, where delegates presented on issues like youth mental health. 

“This is my favorite because you get to meet youth from all over the state, who are there because they want to be there and they want to learn about leadership," she said.

Praising the diverse project opportunities,&nbsp;Samantha Negaard&nbsp;of Great Bend said her favorite part about being in 4-H is the performing arts. “These easily transfer to school activities and has helped with public speaking and confidence.”

D.J. Wyant&nbsp;of Hoisington, a member of the junior leaders and ambassador program, said he enjoys 4-H for its public service activities and for improving his public speaking and leadership skills.

“4-H is very near and dear to my heart,” said Commission Chairperson&nbsp;Tricia Schlessiger, District 4, noting her kids take part in the program. “The focus is on the fair, but there is learning that takes place throughout the year.”

“This is something that will carry you through life,” said Commissioner&nbsp;Barb Esfeld, District 2, of the lessons learned. “There is so much you can do (in 4-H). I am proud of you guys.”

Beran said the new 4-H year is set to begin&nbsp;Oct. 1&nbsp;for nearly&nbsp;150 members&nbsp;across seven community clubs in Barton County, following the conclusion of the Kansas State Fair. The county's 4-H program offers&nbsp;50 projects&nbsp;covering areas such as communication, leadership, citizenship, and career options.

She said 4-H involves much more than the annual&nbsp;Barton County Fair, which is managed in partnership with the Fair Association. The&nbsp;4-H Holding Board continues to manage and maintain the 4-H educational buildings, which are used for club meetings, day camps, and archery practice.

Beran also introduced&nbsp;Sims&nbsp;as the new 4-H agent, joining the extension office after three years as an agriculture and 4-H agent in Greenwood County. He said his wife is from Wilson and that is why they wanted to relocate to this area.

The two noted a slow but positive trend in enrollment, with the state pushing for a&nbsp;10% increase&nbsp;in membership over the next five years. They acknowledged that balancing 4-H with other activities is a challenge for families.

The agents said the local program is seeking project leaders and volunteers, who must follow a registration process for risk management. Volunteers are needed for single events, like&nbsp;County Club Days&nbsp;in February, or for longer-term project guidance.

Project records will be evaluated&nbsp;Oct. 6&nbsp;in Rice County with six other counties.

The Cottonwood Extension District covers Barton and Ellis counties.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Barton County Commission declares National 4-H Week

Venice Mallow Venice mallow (Hibiscus trionum). This attractive annual species is also called “flower-of-an-hour” because each flower remains open for just a few hours before being shed. Venice mallow is in the Malvaceae family, and is related to velvetleaf and common mallow, as well as cotton. The species name trionum refers to the normally three-lobed appearance of the leaves.

Ecology - venice mallow is an introduced plant that has become naturalized in much of the United States. A native of southern Europe, the plant was introduced as an ornamental before escaping cultivation to become a weed. The species is most prevalent in the eastern part of Kansas, but can occur anywhere within the state. It can be found in gardens, cultivated fields, waste areas, pastures, and roadways.

Identification - venice mallow is an annual species reproducing by seeds. It normally grows 0.5 to 2 feet tall, with its many branches often spreading out from the base prior to curving upward. The stems are covered with stiff, short hairs. Leaves are alternate and borne on stalks (petioles), with hairs on the lower surfaces but generally smooth on the top surfaces. The cotyledon (seed) leaves are heart-shaped, and the first true leaves are rounded with gently lobed edges. Subsequent true leaves are normally deeply divided into three lobes, but may have as many as seven lobes. The center lobe is longer than the side lobes, but all are gently lobed to toothed along the edges. Flowers are up to 2.5 inches wide, are short-lived, and originate from petioles arising from the junction of the stem and leaf petioles. The flowers have five petals, are white to pale yellow, and have a reddish to dark purple center. Seeds are produced in a globe-shaped capsule surrounded by a papery husk called a calyx. At maturity, the calyx and capsule dry and rupture, exposing the small (0.1 inch) seeds, which are kidney-shaped, dark brown, and rough.

Because Venice mallow is an indeterminate plant, flowers and seeds are produced throughout the growing season until a killing frost in the fall. Like its close relative, velvetleaf, Venice mallow seeds have an extremely hard seed coat. Consequently, seeds may lie dormant for many years, even decades, before emerging. Management - historically, it was most often problematic in soybean production areas in Kansas. In recent years, newer herbicides and herbicide-resistant soybean varieties have reduced its prevalence in the crop. Herbicides which effectively control Venice mallow in soybean include 2,4-D (Group 4), glyphosate (Group 9), and glufosinate (Group 10) in herbicide-resistant varieties, as well as Group 14 herbicides (sulfentrazone, saflufenacil, flumioxazin) and Group 15 herbicides (pyroxasulfone) in conventional soybean. Group 4 herbicides (2,4-D, dicamba, fluroxypyr) can be used if Venice mallow occurs in corn or sorghum.

Integrated weed management techniques should be the first line of defense when dealing with any weed situation, and this is particularly true in crops such as sunflowers, cotton, or dry beans. With fewer herbicides available to control Venice mallow and other weeds in these crops, prevention as well as mechanical and cultural control practices are even more important. With the longevity of Venice mallow seed viability, attention should be given to the prevention of seedset and movement of seed from infested fields to clean fields.

Campbell: Controlling Venice Mallow in sunflowers, soybeans, other crops

I often hear adults complain about the lack of financial skills with young people. While there are times that I certainly understand the frustration as I learned to make change at my first job at age 13. There are other times that I remind myself, and others, that if someone doesn’t teach them, they can’t know what they don’t know.

In my new role as a Family and Community Wellness agent, I get to lean into 20 years of banking experience and utilize great financial resources from K-State Extension.

I have had an opportunity to begin work with a small group of college students. In our initial session, we worked through wants versus needs and that can sure be a tough conversation! This is followed up by setting SMART financial goals with the students looking at goals between now and the end of the school year, intermediate goals of 3-5 years, and long-term goals of 8-10 years. As a reminder, SMART refers to Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely. I was very impressed by several whose intermediate and long-term goals included where they wanted to be in their career and the tools they would need to saving for a house.

The next step was identifying sources of income and categorizing expenses. We pulled all of those pieces together into a basic budget! One of my favorite questions – from more than one student – was “if I have money left, how much should I be putting into savings?”

I am looking forward to working with this group over the next few months as we take a hard look at how to be an efficient grocery store shopper, work on basic cooking skills, and other skills that can help them be more effective adults and employees!

BERAN: College a time to begin setting financial goals for the future

Coldwater school district mired in conflict amid suspension of superintendent

TOPEKA — Comanche County law enforcement officials Monday asked for the public’s help investigating an incident in which 10 bullets were fired into the unoccupied, parked vehicle of the local school board president.

President Kelly Herd, and other members of the school board in southwest Kansas, have been embroiled in controversy that led to the suspension of superintendent Ty Theurer pending an&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/09/02/a-kansas-student-reported-her-coach-for-harassment-and-touching-school-leaders-kept-it-quiet/">inquiry into allegations he sexually harassed and inappropriately touched a student</a>.

The student’s family filed a sexual harassment complaint and police report in the spring, but Herd worked for months to downplay substance of the allegations and to preserve Theurer’s administrative position.

The school board voted Sept. 3 to suspend Theurer with pay after&nbsp;<a href="https://kansasreflector.com/2025/09/04/outraged-parents-demand-action-as-kansas-school-board-places-superintendent-on-administrative-leave/">more than 100 community members packed a school board meeting to demand disciplinary action</a>. Many in the audience loudly criticized the board’s handling of the students’ complaint. There was a law enforcement presence at that meeting, but outrage was confined to a series of outbursts by people in the crowd and by Herd.

At 8:30 p.m. Sunday night, the sheriff’s department said, a vehicle parked at a residence in the 500 block of East Cottonwood in Coldwater was struck by gunfire approximately 10 times. Herd has resided at a house in that block for decades.

Sheriff Jacob Bruckner confirmed the vehicle was owned by a USD 300 school board member. He said the Kansas Bureau of Investigation responded to help process the crime scene and assist with the investigation.

“The vehicle was unoccupied at the time and no injuries were reported,” Bruckner said. “The investigation is ongoing.”

In a social media post, the sheriff urged Coldwater residents to check home security systems for video of vehicles or people in the neighborhood around the time of the shooting.

Steve Prusa, a member of Comanche County’s school board, said he was notified of the incident at the board president’s home shortly after it occurred.

The reality of someone turning to firearms to make a point about leadership of a public school district was alarming, he said.

“It’s not just a vandalism,” Prusa said. “It’s definitely to a different level.”

He said members of the school board, who don’t receive a salary, had stepped forward to serve because they sought to be of benefit to the community and assume a role in the education of students. The Comanche County district enrolls about 300 students.

“I am devastated and heartbroken for our community. Violence cannot be an answer to anything,” Prusa said.

Comanche County school board member Dean Yoder said it was wrong to interject violence into debate about education.

“So glad her and her family are OK,” Yoder said. “There is never a need for violence. Ever.”

The Comanche County district serves a rural population that includes the communities of Protection, Wilmore, Buttermilk and Coldwater. The district’s South Center High School is located in Coldwater. The district’s middle school and elementary school are in Protection.

SW Kan. school board president’s unoccupied vehicle struck by 10 gunshots

As an Ag agent for KSRE over these past 10 years, I have made countless home visits for individuals with tree issues. There are many reasons a tree can have problems. The drought we lived through these past few years has taken its toll on our trees, to the other extreme the heavy rains and flooding that occurred in Barton County around 2019 also caused significant damage to our trees. These environmental conditions are unpreventable but, giving your tree a little extra TLC for some time after can help your tree stay healthy for a long time after such events.

If your tree falters and dies what should you do? What type of tree should be the replacement? Here are some observations I have seen over time to help you find the right tree for the area you want to plant.

The drought we lived through these past few years has taken its toll on our trees, to the other extreme the heavy rains and flooding that occurred in Barton County around 2019 also caused significant damage to our trees. BOOR: There are many variables when it comes to tree health

As people grow older, maintaining physical health becomes increasingly vital and not just for longevity, but for quality of life. One often-overlooked aspect of health in the aging population or even younger populations that are sedentary due to lifestyle or injury is balance. Experts are now emphasizing the importance of balance exercises as a key part of healthy aging, helping prevent falls, preserve independence and improve overall well-being.

According to the World Health Organization, falls are the second leading cause of accidental injury deaths worldwide. Among older adults, the risk is especially high. In the United States alone, one in four adults over age 65 falls each year, resulting in over three million emergency room visits.

Balance naturally declines with age due to changes in vision, muscle strength, joint flexibility, and even cognitive function. But the good news is balance can be trained, just like strength or endurance.

Maintaining good balance isn’t just about avoiding falls. It’s essential for everyday tasks like walking, bending, climbing stairs, or even reaching into a cabinet. When balance begins to deteriorate, so does confidence. Many older adults start to restrict their activities for fear of falling, which can lead to a sedentary lifestyle, muscle atrophy, and social isolation.

Loss of balance reduces mobility and independence, which then impacts mental health. Simple exercises such as standing on one leg, walking heel-to-toe, or practicing tai chi can dramatically improve stability over time. Physical therapists often recommend incorporating balance practice into daily routines. An example would be brushing your teeth while standing on one leg or putting on socks or shoes while standing on one leg.

This topic discussion would not be complete without touching on other factors such as nutrition, seeing your healthcare provider, and proper footwear. Eating healthy foods and including many nutrient rich foods in your diet can affect mental and physical health. Prioritize whole foods, foods with no food labels, or foods with only a few ingredients. A visit to your healthcare provider can manage changes in your eyes, medications, and balance assessments. Finally, wearing proper footwear can help with any foot conditions or prevent future problems.

Prevention can be the key to not just longevity but longevity with quality of life. Balance training is a small investment that pays enormous dividends to help preserve independence and dignity.

KOERNER: Why practicing balance is important

Though often found in agricultural crops, fall armyworms have been found in certain turfgrass species and we’ve had many reports of them recently. This has been a bad year for them in crops as well as in homeowners’ turf.

Description: Young larvae are ½ to ¾ inches long. Mature larvae can reach 1½ inches long. Fall armyworms can be identified by the inverted “Y” on top of the dark head. Adult moths are ½ inch long. The two front wings are brown-grey. Males have more dark markings than females.

Life Cycle: As a tropical insect, fall armyworms are not able to overwinter in Kansas limiting them to 2-4 generations each year. Moths migrate to their seasonal home and lay hundreds of eggs in clusters. Larvae hatch and begin feeding. Once established, new generations can occur every 23-25 days.

Damage: Larvae feed on grass blades. Heavy infestations will occasionally chew the blades to the crown. Though the damage may be unsightly it does not typically kill the grass. Regrowth of the turfgrass can be expedited with rain and/or irrigation.

Control: If insecticide applications are considered, cyhalothrin (Spectracide Triazicide), permethrin (38 Plus Turf, Termite &amp; Ornamental Insect Spray; Hi-Yield Garden &amp; Farm Insect Control; Eight Yard &amp; Garden RTS) and spinosad (Conserve, Monterey Garden Insect Spray, Captain Jack's Dead Bug Brew, Natural Guard Spinosad) and Dylox (BioAdvanced 24-Hour Grub Control) are commonly available materials registered for control of fall armyworm in turf. Neem oil is also an option if a homeowner does not want to use chemicals.

Spray treatments have greater and quicker contact efficacy than granular applications. Granular treatments require irrigation or rain to activate the insecticide from the dry granular carrier. Professional lawn care service personnel have access to additional materials (such as Scimitar and Deltamethrin) which may have more persistence than homeowner products.

BOOR: Fall armyworms being found in turfgrass, crops

Controlling volunteer wheat this summer and now into early Fall has been challenging. While we are always thankful for the needed moisture. It has caused several flushes of volunteer wheat now. And I hate to be the bearer of bad news but continuing to control all volunteer wheat is still important.

A late flush of volunteer wheat likely is harboring fewer wheat curl mites the vector of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (WSMV) complex. Than volunteer wheat that has been established for a while. There is still time to go out and control those late flushes of volunteer wheat before planting begins.

The general target date for planting wheat for optimum grain yields in Kansas is within a week of the best pest management planting date, or BPMP (formerly known as the “Hessian fly-free”) date (Figure 1). Planting after these dates not only benefits grain yield, but may help reduce the risk of serious pests and diseases that can damage the wheat crop in Kansas. If forage production is the primary goal, earlier planting (mid-September) can increase forage yield. However, if grain yield is the primary goal, then waiting until the BPMP date to start planting is the best approach. Planting in mid-September is ideal for dual-purpose wheat systems where forage yields need to be maximized while reducing the effects of early planting on reduced grain yields.

For growers considering planting early, a good management consideration would be to select wheat varieties with resistance to the wheat streak mosaic virus and/or with tolerance to the wheat curl mite, especially in the western portions of the state. Updated disease and insect ratings for wheat varieties can be found with an internet search for K-State Extension Wheat Variety Guide 2025.

Armyworms and other lepidopteran larvae may also still pose a serious problem to early planted wheat. They may feed on the green wheat plants until the first cold front comes through (temperatures in the mid-20-degree F range for a couple of hours). Insecticide seed treatments do not work well against lepidoptera larvae.

Fall Armyworm/Armyworm Considerations in Volunteer Wheat - because of the large armyworm and fall armyworm populations this year and in years past, some producers are considering adding insecticide to volunteer wheat herbicide applications to save on costs. However, this is not recommended. First, destroying volunteer wheat will starve larvae, push them into pupation, or expose them to predators. Second, insecticides should only be used when pests are at a vulnerable stage and above treatment thresholds. Finally, any insecticide applied now will lose activity long before planted wheat emerges. Control the volunteer wheat, but resist the urge to tank-mix insecticide.

Take-home message - early planting of wheat can increase risks that affect stand establishment and yield:

· Disease risk: Greater chance of insect- or mite-transmitted viral diseases.

· Emergence challenges: High temperatures can reduce germination and shorten coleoptile length in some varieties.

· Optimal planting: Aim for the recommended planting window whenever possible.

· Variety selection: If planting early (due to moisture or dual-purpose systems), choose varieties tolerant to major regional yield-limiting factors.

· Seed treatments: Strongly consider fungicide and insecticide seed treatments when planting early in Kansas.

Barton County Sorghum Field Day planned for Sept. 19 near Hoisington

The past 10 days have seen lots of fun, events, and successes for 4-H members participating at the Kansas State Fair!

For 4-H youth who achieve a purple ribbon, which notes exemplary standards, during the county fair or 4-H Club Day, most have the opportunity to exhibit at the State Fair. In Barton County, we had 52 4-H members qualify to exhibit and most did!

Several members received top placings on photos, visual arts, sewing &amp; textiles, and many other areas. Brantley Edgerton of the Cow Creek 4-H Club had a photo selected for display by the Kansas 4-H Foundation! Samantha Negaard of the Busy Buzzers 4-H Club received a purple ribbon on her Illustrated Talk.

In addition to the items entered, several judging contests are held. The 4-H Photography Judging team of Melody Braddy, Jonas Kern, Samantha Negaard, and Willow Braddy placed second of 19 teams! Jonas had a 4th individual placing to strongly lead the team.

While red ribbons aren’t anyone’s goal as they reflect average project results, they are often the best learning experiences! Youth receive written feedback on most of their exhibits with ways to improve in that project. This might include utilizing a thermometer to verify the internal temperature of a baked good or using a different finishing technique for a woodworking project or a different way to finish a cross-stitch project. Each of these give youth ways to practice different skills or refine ones they have already learned and the lessons are much more than the project-specific skill as they include patience, perseverance, and the ability to receive critical feedback.

If you made a trip to the Kansas State Fair, I hope that you made time to walk through the two 4-H display buildings: Centennial Hall and the 4-H Showcase Building. Both were filled to the brim with the results of project learning and 4-H members who are Beyond Ready to continue building their leadership, communication, and teamwork skills for a lifetime!

The 4-H Photography Judging team of Melody Braddy, Jonas Kern, Samantha Negaard, and Willow Braddy placed second of 19 teams! Jonas had a 4th individual placing to strongly lead the team.While red ribbons aren’t anyone’s goal as they reflect average project results, they are often the best learning experiences! Youth receive written feedback on most of their exhibits with ways to improve in that project. This might include utilizing a thermometer to verify the internal temperature of a baked good or using a different finishing technique for a woodworking project or a different way to finish a cross-stitch project. Each of these give youth ways to practice different skills or refine ones they have already learned and the lessons are much more than the project-specific skill as they include patience, perseverance, and the ability to receive critical feedback.If you made a trip to the Kansas State Fair, I hope that you made time to walk through the two 4-H display buildings: Centennial Hall and the 4-H Showcase Building. Both were filled to the brim with the results of project learning and 4-H members who are Beyond Ready to continue building their leadership, communication, and teamwork skills for a lifetime!Keep learning. Old Business Items: Reports ENRICHMENT REPORTS- Garet Fitzpatrick, Enrichment /Activity Center Director

We set up a booth at the USD 428 Business Showcase on Friday, August 8, in the morning. We had information on our upcoming fall programs, and we had a door prize drawing for three Scooters gift cards along with several boxes of candy. The winners worked at Lincoln School, the Middle School, and Barton Community College.

We also had a table at the Great Bend High School Football Jamboree on Friday, August 29, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. We had poster boards along with markers to let kids and adults make a sign to support their favorite fall athlete or coach.

This fall we will be offering the following Kids Day Out programs for when school has early dismissal and when school is out for the day: Birds &amp; Bugs with KWEC: Monday, October 6, from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, Babysitting 101: Monday, October 6, from 1:00 – 5:00 pm,

Strataca at the Kansas Underground Salt Mine Kids Day Out: Friday, October 17, from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, Half Day of Spooky Crafts: Thursday, October 23, from 1:00 – 5:00 pm, and

Heartland Farm &amp; Bowling Kids Day Out: Friday, October 24, from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.

Our fall afterschool programs in the school sites will start up the week of October 6 and come to an end the second week of December.

Once again, we are offering a wide range of enrichment programs for all ages this fall.

We are collaborating with a number of different organizations in offering these programs including USD 428, City of Great Bend, Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo, K-State Research and Extension – Cottonwood District, Kansas Wildlife and Parks, The University of Kansas Health System – Great Bend, Great Bend Police Department,

The transition period from Summer to Fall is over and all Fall sports are up and running.Youth Flag Football kicked off practice games on Tuesday 9/2 and real games will begin the week of Monday 9/8. This year we have 154 players enrolled. That is up 6 players from last year.Outdoor Youth Soccer started playing practice games on Saturday 9/6 and real games will begin Saturday 9/13. This year we have 168 players enrolled, the exact same number as last year.Coed Adult Volleyball started playing the Fall sessions on Wednesday 9/3 and Friday 9/5. Monday Women’s League will start Monday 9/8. There are 28 teams participating this year compared to 16 teams last Fall.Men’s 3 on 3 Basketball began play on Sunday 9/7. This is the 4th session in a row that we have had a full league of 8 teams.Instructional 1st – 2nd grade volleyball stated Tuesday 9/2. There are a total of 27 kids enrolled, up 4 from last year.4-and 5- year old instructional outdoor soccer also started Tuesday 9/2. We have enough kids this year that I went ahead and split it into 2 groups. There are 32 kids enrolled, up 14 from last year.Attendance Report- Joe Henry, Business Director:In the month of August, there were 3,511 people enrolled in programs sponsored by the Recreation Commission. Total participation for the month was 5,900 and of that total, 2,322 were spectators. For the month, a total of 946 hours of supervised activities were offered.Last year there were 3,722 people enrolled in programs with total participation of 4,655 of which 1,205 were spectators.NEW BUSINESS:1. Dog Park Toys: Information Item:Each year GBRC has done a Pawsome Easter Egg hunt for the dogs in town. This event is always publicized as a fundraiser for future Dog Park Improvements. This year there are some toys that the dogs might have interest in.2. Golf Course Architect Agreement: Action Item:The next step in the Golf Course project is to get a more detailed idea of what the course could look like in the future. Having this plan put into motion early will help determine placement of the sprinkler system and playability moving forward. We will discuss options at the meeting. The proposal is attached as well.3. City Auditorium Fans: Action Item:Hammeke Electric installed the ceiling fans in the City Auditorium. The fans were harder to install than first originally planned. The invoice amount of $14,804.48 is the final bill for installation.
