Kansas State University agricultural economists have launched an updated online course to help farmers and ranchers develop and use financial statements more effectively in making management decisions, says Stacy Campbell, Crop Production agent with the Cottonwood District.

K-State farm analyst LaVell Winsor said the course, Finances and the Farm, allows agricultural producers to complete each lesson on their own schedule.

“The agricultural economy is swinging back to a lower margin environment, which makes it important for farmers to understand their finances to determine if they need to make changes in their operation,” Winsor said. “We hope that producers might learn how their lender looks at their financial statements, and understand ratios and how their operation benchmarks to other farms.” Registration is available online. The cost is $300 if the participant wants to earn Farm Service Agency borrower credits, or $100 for the education only.

Winsor said the online course focuses on seven key areas:

· Record keeping. · Balance sheet. · Income statement. · Enterprise budgets. · Cash flow. · Goal setting. · Managing family living expenses.

“Many farms have a younger generation that has returned to the farm,” Winsor said. “One good way to take this course is for the older and younger generation to take it together to prepare the younger generation to take over record keeping in the future.”

The instructors for the course are Winsor and K-State Research and Extension farm economist Robin Reid, who also encourage producers to consider another online course, Risk Management on the Farm, which focuses on commodity marketing, enterprise budgets, crop insurance and government programs.

“I commend LaVell and Robin for their hard work in putting together this self-paced online course for our farmers and ranchers in Kansas, and essentially across the country. Agriculture

producers can do the day to day, boots on the ground kind of work to keep their operation going. But can sometimes lack in area of financial statements and the time to commit to a course that meets for consecutive weeks,” says Campbell.

CAMPBELL: K-State releases newest ‘Finances and the Farm’ course

Many people receive Valentine’s Day gifts from loved ones, especially roses, but they decline shortly after Feb. 14. Kansas State University horticulture expert, Cynthia Domenghini offers guidelines to extend the life of floral arrangements and loose stems.

“For floral arrangements, keep the vase filled or floral foam soaked with warm water,” Domenghini said. “Add fresh, warm water daily and if the water turns cloudy, replace it immediately.”

Domenghini suggests recutting loose stems every time water is replaced by removing 1-2 inches with a sharp knife, under water to allow the stem to draw water instead of air.

“Keep flowers in a cool spot (65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit), away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, directly under ceiling fans, or near radiators,” Domenghini said.

For loose stems, begin by filling a clean, deep vase with water and add the flower food obtained from your florist.

“Remove leaves that will be below the waterline. Leaves in water will promote bacterial growth,” Domenghini said, “Stems should be cut immediately before putting them in water.”

If you cannot get flowers in a food solution right away, keep them cool, Domenghini added.

BOOR: Extending the life of cut flowers

Wegovy, Ozempic, and Rybelsus are three popular pharmaceuticals you likely know by name due to their catchy commercials, celebrity endorsements, and social media presence. While 50% of Americans are currently trying to lose weight, interest in these drugs is at an all-time high. All of these medications are known for their weight loss effects, and they are FDA-approved. They sound too good to be true. Are they?

Wegovy is approved for weight loss while Ozempic and Rybelsus are approved for diabetes, but sometimes they are prescribed “off-label” to treat obesity. While these medications have proven to be very successful in managing diabetes and reducing obesity, some factors should be taken into consideration before you ask your doctor about them.

There are common side effects, some of which affect the gastrointestinal system. In fact, about 50% of people report regular nausea and diarrhea, but more serious outcomes have been seen in people taking the drugs long-term. These issues span from gastroparesis, bowel obstruction, and pancreatitis, to muscle loss. Since the medications are relatively new to the general population, there isn’t much information on how the drugs affect biological function years down the road. The medications are usually a lifelong commitment as studies show that people who discontinue them gain most weight back within one year. So, if these effects are evident now, what will future consequences be?

Although it is hard to know if these drugs will be considered safe in the long run, the science behind the medication is quite interesting. It could also be beneficial in finding safe weight loss methods.

Wegovy, Ozempic, and Rybelsus are semiglutides that mimic the GLP-1 hormone which prompts the body to produce insulin. This reduces blood sugar. In higher dosages, the drugs suppress appetite and slow stomach emptying. These effects prove to help people manage

diabetes and lose weight. Since the drugs mimic a naturally occurring hormone, supporting the body’s production of GLP-1 can result in safe weight loss and blood sugar control.

Natural methods of supporting GLP-1 include the intake of foods that boost the secretion of the hormone. Studies report that unsaturated, omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and high-fiber foods tend to result in the highest levels of GLP-1 secretion.

Sources of unsaturated fats include avocados, almonds, walnuts, pistachios, and other nuts. Seafood like salmon, mackerel, and cod are other great sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Quality oils like olive oil and flaxseed oil are also great choices to increase your healthy fat intake.

Eating enough protein per day can also provide feelings of fullness through GLP-1 secretion. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends that the average adult consumes at least 0.35 grams of protein per pound of body weight. Several lean proteins include chicken breast, fish, plain Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, beans, and lentils.

High-fiber foods also induce satiety through GLP-1. Specifically, soluble fiber in foods such as barley, oats, peas, beans, lentils, and apples are fermentable. This means they digest slowly, support the gut microbiome, and produce GLP-1 hours after eating.

Although there are circumstances when a prescription is necessary, using food as medicine is a promising strategy for weight loss. Creating a lifestyle with a diet high in unsaturated fat, lean protein, and fiber has the potential to impact weight, diabetes management, and quality of life without dangerous side effects.

WINKEL: Food is medicine - safe weight loss

On Sunday, Feb. 4, 4-H members across Barton County gathered to showcase their Communication Skills at 4-H Club Day!

Communication skills are necessary for everyone in every job. Our littlest 4-H members start out by presenting “Show and Share” with the goal of being able to look the judge in the eye and talk.

As they get a little older, they have the opportunity to develop and present Demonstrations which show how to do something or Illustrated Talks which tells how something is done. These involve preparing materials, an outline, and visual aids. As timed events, it is also important to learn to manage your time well.

Older 4-H members expand their presentation skills by adding public speaking and extemporaneous speaking to the demonstrations and illustrated talk options. Public speaking is excellent practice for a lifetime of presentations whether that is used at work, on a board, or with a civic organization. Extemporaneous speaking is probably one of the toughest categories! Participants have ten minutes to draw from a selection of topics, prepare their thoughts, and record their main points on a single notecard. It challenges youth to quickly organize their thoughts and confidently present their topic.

In addition to speaking opportunities, many clubs will work together to present a club skit. Teamwork, organization, and planning are all important skills as the club coordinates to showcase their members in a fun and inventive way.

One of the most challenging club events is the model meeting. 4-H Clubs learn and practice parliamentary procedure at each meeting and the model meeting event gives them a place to show what they know! They must provide an agenda to the judge prior to the meeting and secretary minutes immediately following. There are requirements as to the number of motions that must be included. This is a great life skill for anyone who will sit on a board or committee!

Also included in 4-H Club Day is the opportunity for 4-H members to present music, dance, and talent numbers.

In all cases, these are performed before a judge who provides feedback in addition to a ribbon placing. This consultative judging is a regular part of 4-H learning.

Cottonwood-Barton 4-H participates in a regional contest so qualifiers from most categories are eligible to present at the next level with the best of seven other counties. Regional Club Day will occur on March 8 in Great Bend.

Those who receive top placings at County 4-H Club Day also have the opportunity to present their Demonstration or Illustrated Talk at the Kansas State Fair. If you ever walk through the 4-H Centennial Hall building at State Fair, you may have seen youth from across the state presenting on one of two stages.

Practicing the life skills of communication, organization, and planning are really the WHY behind 4-H Club Day! Poise, confidence, and self-assurance grow every time a presentation is given. Be on the lookout for these young leaders and their growing communication skills!

CAMPBELL: Weed management schools scheduled Feb. 12-14

Are you an employer? Have you ever wondered how you could support your employees who are pregnant or have young children? During the pandemic the need for quality child care was highlighted because of how child care directly affects many aspects of a community. Difficulties with child care were also brought to the attention of communities.

Jennifer Traffis, of the Family Conservancy in Wyandotte County, leads a collaborative effort to improve child care. She wrote an article about how businesses can use the child care tax credit. This could be a way for employers to support their employees while it also benefits them. She explains the workforce connection and how child care is foundational to the health and stability of the economy. “Our economic strength relies on business, businesses rely on employees, and employees with young children rely on child care. Without child care, working families cannot fully and adequately participate in the workforce, which negatively impacts the economy and our local business sector’s bottom line.” She further explains, “The child care sector is significantly underfunded, and the business model is broken. Thus, employers are facing a workforce shortage due to the lack of reliable, affordable, quality child care options for families.”

She suggests that this problem isn’t just a family problem anymore but a community problem. When families have support from others around them then everyone wins. When businesses support their employees during their child bearing years, employers’ benefit. Employees will have improved morale and job satisfaction. The employer creates a loyal employee that feels supported. It can also attract quality employees when they offer benefits that other employers do not.

4. Add dependent care flexible spending accounts to your company benefits. This allows parents to save for child care with tax advantages.

5. Add a child care subsidy into your budget.

6. Implement an infants-at-work program as a low-cost child care solution and to support a positive work-life balance. Allowing mothers and babies to be together fulfills many needs. Of course, this isn’t always a solution since safety must be first. Not all industries could have infants at the workplace.

During the pandemic the need for quality child care was highlighted because of how child care directly affects many aspects of a community. Difficulties with child care were also brought to the attention of communities.Jennifer Traffis, of the Family Conservancy in Wyandotte County, leads a collaborative effort to improve child care. She wrote an article about how businesses can use the child care tax credit. This could be a way for employers to support their employees while it also benefits them. She explains the workforce connection and how child care is foundational to the health and stability of the economy. “Our economic strength relies on business, businesses rely on employees, and employees with young children rely on child care. Without child care, working families cannot fully and adequately participate in the workforce, which negatively impacts the economy and our local business sector’s bottom line.” She further explains, “The child care sector is significantly underfunded, and the business model is broken. Thus, employers are facing a workforce shortage due to the lack of reliable, affordable, quality child care options for families.”She suggests that this problem isn’t just a family problem anymore but a community problem. When families have support from others around them then everyone wins. When businesses support their employees during their child bearing years, employers’ benefit. Employees will have improved morale and job satisfaction. The employer creates a loyal employee that feels supported. KOERNER: Employers supporting child care

When you envision retirement, positive thoughts likely bubble to the surface. You may be excited to relax, enjoy your freedom, and spend time with loved ones. However, retirement may not be exactly as it is imagined. What do I mean by this?

Erin Martinez, K-State Research and Extension specialist and associate professor of Adult Development and Aging shares her expertise:

“When you have your eyes set on retirement without a plan about how you are going to spend the time, it can be a bit of a shock and can disrupt your life by bringing about emotions about a lack of purpose.” She advises folks to not only have a financial retirement plan but also to think about what they want to accomplish in retirement.

“You don’t have to know exactly what you are going to do day-to-day, but spend time reflecting on what you value and what you want your big priorities in retirement to be,” Martinez said.

Knowing your purpose will help you move through the stages of retirement: honeymoon, disenchantment, reorientation, retirement route, and termination.

While honeymoon refers to newfound freedom, Martinez said feelings of disenchantment can follow if you haven’t found a new purpose. During the reorientation phase, folks find new activities and form a plan for their retirement years along with settling into a new routine.

Termination can refer to ending the retirement plan by going back to work, but more commonly it means that the retiree needs to reduce their involvement due to declining health.

For some, shifting from full-time work to part-time work is a fantastic strategy that allows a person to slowly transition into retirement.

Martinez advises, “Talk with your employer to see if you can step into a part-time role or see what other options there might be even if it has never been done before.”

Looking for volunteer opportunities is another excellent way to find a purpose in retirement. “Volunteer Kansas is a great website to explore when looking for ideas,” Martinez suggests.

Serving others is one way that older adults can keep themselves physically and mentally healthy while maintaining social connections.

“As you shift in retirement, you can go from volunteering at school events to helping out at the senior center. This allows you to make different friends in new spaces,” Martinez said. “Socialization is incredibly important to healthy aging.”

As part of the retirement plan, it is important to communicate with family about your plan so that children and spouses don’t make assumptions about how you are going to spend time.

Sometimes family dynamics struggle in retirement because of uncommunicated plans. If ideas don’t align, friction can occur. Martinez advises couples to talk through their retirement goals and have a clear plan of what they hope to accomplish.

She added: “Mentally preparing for retirement involves a lot of internal processing about what is most meaningful to you and what you want your retirement legacy to be.”

Taking time now to understand your goals and purpose for retirement puts you on a rewarding path that allows you to get the most out of this stage of life.

To address the topic of weed control, K-State Research and Extension has scheduled six regional weed control programs in February. This program has been designed to help producers and agri-business retailers to improve weed control with challenging species and weather conditions.

The schools will be presented by speakers from Kansas State University, Sarah Lancaster, K-State Extension Weed specialist, along with local Extension Agents. Topics will include a Weed Management Update, Do you know your adjuvants and a spray table demonstration along with Know your KSU Weed Chemical Book and a question and answer session. So be sure and bring all your questions with you!

BOOR: Deer biology program in Great Bend

In my last article on budgeting, I referenced saving money and an emergency fund. I wanted to spend a little more time on this topic since its an important one.

Growing your savings requires a plan. It starts with a budget. There are many ways to save money the key is finding which one works best for you. The easiest way is to set up an automatic deposit from your paycheck. Most banks and credit unions allow you to automatically transfer funds into various accounts on a regular basis. Emergency savings should ideally be placed in an easily accessible account at a bank or credit union that will not charge you taxes, maintenance, or early withdrawal fees. Ideally, you would be able to earn interest on the money in your savings account.

If you don’t have money in savings then starting small is a good plan. Perhaps saving 5-10% of your paycheck or even $10 a week. The goal is to get to $500-$1,000 as soon as you can. That amount will usually cover repairs on appliances or vehicles, etc. Another way to save money is to create a savings plan. You figure out how much money you’ll need to save as a goal. Then divide the amount of money you want to save by the number of weeks you have to save it. That is your weekly savings target. You can try to increase savings by cutting out wants such as eating out or canceling cable or subscriptions for a while.

Tax time is a good time to save if you are getting a refund. Consider using all or part of a refund for savings. You can have your refund automatically placed in your savings account and then you don’t even have to think about it. So easy! Other one-time opportunities to save would be gifts of money for birthdays or holidays.

Once you have your emergency fund you will want to make sure you only use it for emergencies. An emergency fund is a cash reserve used only for unplanned expenses or financial emergencies. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau defines emergency fund as savings that can be used for large or small unplanned bills or payments that are not part of your routine monthly expenses and spending. Some examples include car repairs, home repairs, medical bills, or loss of income. A vacation is not an emergency. Neither is the cute outfit or shoes that are on sale.

Having an emergency fund allows you to have a buffer when life happens. This allows someone the freedom of not having to use credit cards or loans, which can lead to debt that is harder to pay off. Having savings is particularly helpful for those with an irregular income.

Once you have a minimum amount in an emergency fund you may want to think about having more in the emergency fund for bigger emergencies such as an unexpected job loss. Having a few months of expenses in savings can be a buffer when the unexpected happens.

Learning to save money is a lifelong skill. Just like budgeting it can take some practice, so don’t give up. You will be pleased with the results. Happy saving!

Irrigated corn production program to be hosted in Great Bend

K-State Research and Extension and the Kansas Forage and Grassland Council (KSFGC) are hosting the 2024 Alfalfa School on Tuesday, February 13. The event will take place at the Burnside Room, 1214 Stone Street in Great Bend and will run from 8:30 a.m. to around 3:00 p.m.

This year’s event will feature several sessions covering a myriad of topics related to alfalfa production. The program will offer five continuing education unit (CEU) credits for Certified Crop Advisors and one Commercial Applicators credit. The school is free to attend for current Kansas Forage and Grassland Council members. The cost is $45 for non-members and is payable at the door. This fee covers the cost of participation plus membership to KSFGC.

BOOR: Alfalfa School is set for Feb. 13 in Great Bend

The Midwest is about to experience a bug explosion. But not Kansas. For the first time since 1803, a pair of cicada broods are set to emerge at the same time. Alicia Boor, agriculture and natural resources agent in the Cottonwood District for K-State Research and Extension, said those insects differ from the ones around most of Kansas.

"The cicadas we have in Kansas are mainly annual cicadas," she said. "That's why we get a few every year but they aren't overwhelming. There is one brood that's in the eastern part of Kansas but it has never been recorded in Barton County."

Cicadas are grouped in broods based on their life cycles and when they emerge. The cicadas in Kansas typically spend two to five years underground and emerge at different times, so the familiar buzz of the insects can be heard each summer. Contrary to popular belief, cicadas are not locusts and cannot eat crops. 

"The 13-year and 17-year, they actually hatch from eggs and burrow underground and spend those 13 or 17 years as nymphs, feeding on the xylem and phloem, the nutrients that are in the tree roots," Boor said.

The cicadas then emerge, spend approximately two months finding a mate, then they die. Brood IV (4), also known as the "Kansas Brood," is on a 17-year cycle. Brood IV is largely contained to the eastern half of the state and last emerged in 2015 with the next emergence in 2032.

Cicada nymphs have large, muscular front legs that allow them to dig their way from their burrows. They tunnel to the surface, crawl up the nearest object, and their skin splits down the middle. The adult emerges from the shell commonly found on fences and trees and dries its wings.

The cicadas making national headlines this year are Brood XIII (8) and Brood XIX (19). Brood XIII cicadas found mostly in Illinois, are on a 17-year cycle. Brood XIX cicadas are on a less common 13-year cycle and can be found mostly in Illinois and the southeast corner of the United States. Because of their differing cycles, the two broods last emerged at the same time in 1803. After the 2024 emergence, they will not emerge at the same time again for another 221 years.

Billions of the insects are expected to emerge throughout the Midwest from late April through the summer. Cicadas make their famous sound by expanding and contracting a membrane on their abdomen called a tymbal. Mass emergence of cicadas will not be near Barton County

Winter time when farmers are not in the field is the time to have some timely and informative meetings for agriculture producers. Myself and my co-worker Alicia Boor have put together several upcoming programs in February and March.

CAMPBELL: Upcoming programs – Cottonwood District

Have you heard of the Blue Zones? If you are familiar with these five places on Earth, you may know the secrets of the longest-lived people on the planet. Although these populations tend to live well into their 100’s, the amazing part of their aging process is not the number of years they live but the quality of life they maintain. In fact, most of these people are still active well into their 90’s. So, what is their secret?

The Power 9 Rule, coined by Dan Buettner, describes the common traits of Blue Zone practices that empower people of these regions to live long, healthy lives.

Move naturally. Contradictory to modern exercise and diet culture, people within the Blue Zones don’t go to the gym, run marathons, or do CrossFit. Their everyday lifestyles avoid mechanical conveniences that nudge them into moving naturally throughout the day. Walking is the basis of their active lifestyles. Walking to the store, a friend’s house, or work is the norm. People garden and do physical labor on a daily basis.

The key here is that regular, low- moderate intensity activity is achieved daily. This keeps their cardiovascular systems strong while strengthening muscles without overusing joints, tendons, and ligaments.

Know your purpose. People in Blue Zones have a purpose for their lives. Every task completed throughout the day is done mindfully and with intention. Okinawans call this sense of purpose “ikigai” and Nicoyans name it “plan de Vida.” Both translate to “why I wake up in the morning.” Knowing your sense of purpose is worth up to seven years of life expectancy.

Downshift. Stress is a major contributor to disease. It is directly linked to chronic inflammation that is associated with every major age-related disease. People of the Blue Zones have stress relief practices naturally built into their day. Adventists pray, Sardinians do a happy hour, and Greeks take an afternoon nap.

The 80% Rule. This Power 9 practice is directly related to healthy weight management. “Hara hachi bu” is the mantra said before meals to remind Okinawans to stop eating when they are 80% full. The science behind this indicates that it takes about 20 minutes for the brain to realize that the stomach is full. This small gap could be the difference between gaining or losing weight.

Plant Slant. Most of us know that the food we consume is the foundation of well-being. This is one reason why people of the Blue Zones maintain health so effortlessly. What they consume is plant-based, unprocessed, and grown naturally. Common foods include an array of vegetables and omega-3-rich nuts. Beans are their main protein source along with moderate amounts of fatty fish. On the other hand, meat is a celebratory food that is eaten about five times per month.

Wine at Five. You may be surprised that a ritual happy hour is part of Power 9. As a regular part of their day, Sardinians drink red Cannanou wine which is exceptionally high in polyphenols while visiting with loved ones. It is important to note the health benefits of this particular drink and the socialization aspect of this practice. This may be more influential to well-being than the alcohol itself.

Belong. In all of the Blue Zones, people identify with some sort of faith-based community. While Denomination doesn’t seem to matter, research shows that attending faith-based services once per week will add 4-14 years of life expectancy.

Loved Ones First. Being around family and close friends is incredibly important. Not only because of the socialization aspect, but because these close connections build relationships that foster trust, support, and stability.

Right Tribe. As the saying goes, “You become who you surround yourself with” is proven to be true. Studies show that smoking, obesity, happiness, and even loneliness are contagious. In Japan, the Okinawans have “moais” – groups of five friends who are committed to each other for life. People of the Blue Zones have favorable social networks that support healthy behaviors, and this creates an environment of healthy living.

So, there you have it; the most influential practices from the world's healthiest people. If you’re anything like me, you are fascinated by the research, but you are also puzzled by the reality of practicing the Power 9 in the US. Dan Buettner explains, “The secret to longevity, as I see it, has less to do with diet, or even exercise, and more to do with the environment in which a person lives: social and physical. What do I mean by this? WINKEL: Blue Zones, Power 9

This past week was the beginning of one of my favorite community partnerships with Great Bend Reads with USD 428!

The book, “The Wild Robot” takes the reader on quite an adventure of exploring, learning, and change. For my part, we discussed why it is important for us to have friends and to be a good friend.

We discuss the importance of listening carefully and attentively to understand someone with a different point of view. We also discuss the importance of our own words in talking with others by being polite, being respectful, and being aware of how our words impact others. It is ok to talk about hard topics or not like a way someone spoke to you but there are better ways to handle this than yelling and stomping our feet to get our way.

A good part of our discussion is around how we can be kind to others by smiling, using our good manners, and looking for ways to help others.

We are all different with different points of view. Life would be boring if we were all the same and the students work through an exercise of finding things they have in common with classmates.

As I tell the students, we all like to have friends and we need to be a good friend. I ask for ONE thing that they will try for the next week to be a good friend to someone else.

Perhaps, there is a lesson in this for each of us.

BERAN: Lessons for all

A budget is a plan for how to spend and save your money. A monthly household budget can help you make sure you have enough money to pay for things you need like rent, groceries, and electricity. They can also help you think about how you spend your money on things you want like cable television or having a pet. Paying for all your household needs before you spend money on things you want is a wise financial habit. Knowing how to make a budget is an important first step toward managing your money.

Understanding the difference between wants and needs is a way to build a budget and make sure basic needs are taken care of such as food, clothing, and shelter before things that are upgrades or nice to have. Learning to save money is also a necessity because having an emergency fund helps to avoid a major crisis. It also allows you to save for specific purchases without having to use credit therefore, saving you money in interest. An emergency fund is usually around $500-$1,000 as a minimum. That is typically enough money to be able to cover an emergency. While there is some stress related to emergencies there is less stress when there is money to cover it.

The first step I like to do when creating a budget is to track expenses for a month so you know where your money is going. If you don’t know where your money is going then it is difficult to sit down and put a number in each category. Some categories like rent stay the same but other categories, for example, groceries, can be surprising when we pay attention to what we are spending.

Sometimes we can also be taken off guard by how much we really spend on seemingly little things. We can make better choices when we know exactly how much we are spending on something. For example, stopping to get snacks or drinks at a convenience store, can add up quickly. A fountain drink can be around $2.00. If we stop five times a week that adds up to $10.00 a week. If we don’t know what we are spending then we can’t make an educated choice on how to spend our money. Some people might be willing to spend $10.00 a week on drinks and others may not be willing to spend that much. The choice is yours.

Having a budget is telling your money what to do. To some people budgeting feels restrictive but knowing where your money is going can also create a sense of freedom. You also need to know how much money is coming in. What are all your income sources? The more informed you are the better decisions you can make around anything and this includes personal finance. Once you create a budget you can use an online system or the envelope system to keep track of your budget. There are a lot of online budgeting tools so you can electronically keep track of

your spending. Or you can utilize an envelope system where you put cash in each envelope and each envelope represents a category. Examples of categories include rent, groceries, gas, utilities, savings, etc.

The goal is to tell each dollar where to go. If you have money left over after all the basics and bills then you can decide how to use those. Even if they go to savings or a miscellaneous category, tell each dollar where it will be spent. Likewise, if you run out of money before everything is paid, then you will need to find ways you can cut back or increase your income.

It takes some time to get used to doing a budget. You aren’t going to be perfect the first month if you’ve never done a budget before. It will take some time and trial and error to get your budget to work well for you. Keep practicing until you figure it out. Be patient and don’t give up!

Knowing how to make a budget is an important first step toward managing your money.Understanding the difference between wants and needs is a way to build a budget and make sure basic needs are taken care of such as food, clothing, and shelter before things that are upgrades or nice to have. Learning to save money is also a necessity because having an emergency fund helps to avoid a major crisis. It also allows you to save for specific purchases without having to use credit therefore, saving you money in interest. An emergency fund is usually around $500-$1,000 as a minimum.
