Snow across portions of Kansas provided relief to landscapes during an abnormally dry December.&nbsp;&nbsp;

But Kansas State University horticulture expert Ward Upham said yards may need another shot of moisture to alleviate stress in lawns and gardens.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“A good, deep watering with moisture reaching at least a foot down into the soil is much better than several light sprinklings that just wet the top portions of the soil,” Upham said. “A deep watering will ensure that the majority of roots have access to water.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Upham urged homeowners to test the moisture content in their yard’s soil by pushing a metal rod, wooden dowel, electric fence post or similar item into the ground. “Dry soil is much harder to push through than wet,” he said. Measure how far down the implement goes to determine the amount of moisture is in the soil.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Although all perennial plants benefit from moist soils before winter, it is especially important for newly planted or over-seeded lawns, as well as newly transplanted trees and shrubs due to their limited root systems,” Upham said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Even trees and shrubs planted within the last 2-3 years are more sensitive to drought than a well-established plant. Evergreens are more at risk because moisture is lost from the foliage.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Upham shared a few tips for watering common areas of the yard:

 <li>Trees and shrubs planted within the last year.&nbsp;Drill a small hole in a five gallon bucket near the bottom, then fill the bucket and let the water dribble out slowly next to the tree. Refill the bucket once so that you apply 10 gallons. Larger trees planted 2-3 years prior may require more water. </li><li>Large trees. Using a soaker hose, circle the trunk one-half the distance to the dripline, or the outermost reach of branches. On smaller trees, you may need to circle the tree several times so that only soil which as tree roots will be watered. &nbsp;</li><li>Newly established bed or foundation plantings.&nbsp;Hook the beginning and end of a soaker hose to a Y-adapter to equalize pressure, which encourages more uniform watering. &nbsp;</li><li>Fall planted or overseeded lawns.&nbsp;Use an overhead sprinkler. Watering to a depth of 12 inches is more difficult; try to reach at least six inches deep.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li>

This article provides answers to frequently asked questions associated with paraquat and dicamba trainings detailed for Kansas 2023.

Do all paraquat dichloride product labels require the additional training? All products featuring the new labeling with the active ingredient paraquat dichloride, such as Gramoxone, Firestorm, Helmquat and Parazone will require the additional training in order to apply these products. Remember if the new training requirement is listed on the label of the product you are using, then you MUST complete the training.

Who is required to take this training? Any person who intends to use paraquat must be a certified applicator and is required to take this training.

How often am I required to receive the training? The training is required every three years. Check to make sure your training is current!

Do I need to be certified to use products containing paraquat dichloride? The newly labeled products state that “Product may ONLY be mixed, loaded or applied by a certified applicator who has successfully completed the paraquat-specific training before use. Application “under direct supervision” of a certified applicator is NO LONGER allowed. In the state of Kansas, this means that everyone purchasing and using these products has to either obtain a private applicator license (application to agricultural lands owned or operated by individual) or a commercial applicator license (applicators applying to other people’s land for compensation). If you have been applying under someone else’s license in the past you will need to get your own license before applying these products.

How can I complete the training requirements? The only training that meets the requirements is housed on the eXtension website and can be found by going to: http://usparaquattraining.com. If you don’t currently have an account you will need to create one before it will allow you to take the training. For in-person training materials, please visit https://npsec.us/paraquat

The Kansas Department of Agriculture and K-State Research and Extension will offer virtual workshops Feb. 6-19 to assist farmers’ market vendors and managers, and those wanting to sell food products directly to consumers.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The workshop series includes five online Lunch and Learn sessions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Over the past two years, we’ve seen an increase in people’s enthusiasm for locally sourced food, and these workshops will address common questions and concerns for farmers and small businesses who are embracing these opportunities to reach local consumers,” said Londa Nwadike, a food safety specialist with K-State Research and Extension and the University of Missouri.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“It’s also important for farmers to understand certain legal, safety and financial parameters before choosing to sell directly to the consumer or at the farmers’ market.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

In 2022, more than 95 farmers’ markets were registered with KDA’s Central Registration of Farmers’ Markets.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The dates and topics for each Lunch and Learn online session are as follows:&nbsp;&nbsp;

KDA’s weights and measures program will offer free scale certification with a paid registration to an online workshop.&nbsp;&nbsp;

BOOR: Workshops for farmers wanting to sell directly to consumers

Last week I introduced you to a fact sheet I wrote that focuses on healthy living. A long and healthy life doesn’t just happen. Everyday choices influence the quality of life you experience. Decisions start before your feet hit the floor in the morning. For instance, you make a decision whether or not to set an alarm or what time to set the alarm. Many decisions during the day are food centered. Perhaps you think you just make three food decisions daily: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Well, think again. You choose how much or what kind of milk to pour on your cereal, whether to have a second helping of lasagna, if you will eat that pastry or drink soda or coffee at the office, and on and on.

Other important decisions revolve around physical activity. Take the stairs or elevator? Exercise before or after work? Watch TV or go for a walk? Since all of these decisions affect how your day goes, it is important to consider making a few common-sense changes. Many serious health problems are directly related to personal habits or behavior. Having a written plan is an important first step in regaining or maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The bullet points that revolve around eating habits include:

· Include a fruit or vegetable with every meal or snack

· Eat slowly and eat only until you are no longer hungry

· Choose to eat more nutrient-dense foods

· Eat whole foods instead of highly processed foods.

Along with choosing to consume healthier food, many people can a achieve a healthy lifestyle by increasing physical activity. Start by investing in a good pair of walking shoes and walk around your neighborhood or indoor exercise facility. Make sure you start slow, especially if you have been inactive for a period of time. Find a buddy to exercise with. It will help to have someone to hold you accountable for increasing you level of physical activity.

The most important part of an action plan is to choose something you want to do. If your doctor or a family member tells you that you need to walk more, but that is not something you want to do, it will most likely not be successful. Next, it needs to be something reasonable, such as something you can expect to be able to accomplish in a week or a month. A true action plan is behavior specific. Losing weight is not a behavior; cutting out a 20 ounce soda every day is. An action plan answers these questions: What? How much? When? How often?

The final piece of a successful action plan is to assess the confidence level that you will fulfill the contract. On a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 represents little confidence and 10 represents total confidence, your plan should rank at least a 7.

I have a few action plan magnets that are write on/wipe off. If you are one of the first three people to stop by either of our Cottonwood offices, you will receive it. I hope your year is off to a great start!

KRUG: Making an action plan for the New Year

The Cottonwood Extension District and Rice County Extension will be hosting a Winter Cow – Calf Nutrition Program on Jan. 31 in Lyons, KS. The program will focus on developing and maintaining proper beef cow nutrition programs coming out of a drought and going into the calving season.

Lunch will be served at promptly at noon, graciously sponsored by KSU Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. The program will kick off at 12:30 PM with Dr. Gregg Hanzlicek, KSU College of Veterinary Medicine, as he discusses ‘Vitamin A considerations for Beef Cows: Important Even Under Drought Conditions’. Next, you’ll hear from Alicia Boor, Cottonwood Extension office, on ‘Vaccine Storage and Handling’. Lastly, you’ll hear from K-State Research and Extension’s new Cow- Calf Specialist, Dr. Jason Warner. Warner’s presentation will be focusing on ‘Rethinking Beef Cow Nutrition in Today’s Environment’. Speakers will stick around for a short time for any addition questions from attendees.

BOOR: Cow nutrition program

With fertilizer prices continuing to be a significant input cost and the availability issues, it is increasingly important for producers to properly manage their agricultural inputs. To address the topic of nutrient management, K-State Research and Extension, has scheduled four regional programs during the month of January 2023. This program has been designed to help producers understand the fertilizer soil relationships to achieve a greater return from an investment in fertilizer especially in this farm environment with the fertilizer issues.

January 24 – Lincoln – 9:30 a.m. to NOON – St. Patrick Catholic Parish Hall

January 24 – Hays – 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. – Cottonwood Extension District Office (601 Main St., Hays)

January 25 – Colby – 9:30 a.m. to NOON – City Limits Convention Center

January 25 – Norton – 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. - 4-H Building at the Norton Co. Fairgrounds

The workshop will be presented by Dr. Lucas Haag, KSU NW Region agronomist and Fred Vocasek, Sr. Lab Servi-Tech agronomist along with local Extension Agents. The Power of Negotiation &amp; Communication – Land Leasing Strategies for Midwestern Ag Women

CAMPBELL: KSU crop nutrient management update meetings

This week kicks off one of my favorite partnerships with USD 428! Great Bend Reads was new to me last year and I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to present to the students of all 5 grade schools as they read a book as families and as a school community.

The librarians and staff coordinate a multitude of activities and incentives for the students to participate over several weeks as they read the book.

This year’s book, “Zoey and Sassafras: Dragons and Marshmallows” by Asia Citro is a fun book about how scientists work while expanding imaginations! As someone who grew up loving books and libraries, this is right up my alley! By the way, did you know that 4-H also has a Reading Project?

For my part of the students’ lessons, I will be sharing 4-H curriculum about the Pet Project and the Veterinary Science Project! It will give us a chance to talk about problem-solving and creative solutions.

While I look forward to working with the grade school students, I am very excited about some volunteers. I’ve had the opportunity to work with the Junior and Senior students in Jennifer Hopkins’ Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) program at Great Bend High School over the last few weeks. We jumped into a Community Vitality curriculum which focused on leadership and communication skills. When I shared about GBReads with the class, several students asked if they could help out! We have worked on ages and stages of youth development as well as program planning and facilitation skills.

Having the opportunity to work with and watch both groups learn and develop is what I love about my job! Will it go perfectly? Nope! Will we learn as many things as presenters as the grade school students? Absolutely!

If you know a Great Bend grade school student, be sure to ask them about Zoey and Sassafras. Better yet, grab their book and read with them!

BERAN: Community reading

A few years ago I wrote a fact sheet titled, Action Plan for Healthy Living. To help get your 2023 off to a great start, I would like to highlight a few of the tips from the fact sheet. As you might expect, many of the bullet points revolve around eating and exercise habits. Today, though, I want to focus on a few other lifestyle choices that can contribute to good health.

· Stress management: Stress is a normal part of living and the causes of it can be good or bad. When stress becomes distress people often show unhealthy responses, such as driving too fast, prolonged anger, worry or fear, or drinking too much. Learn to find ways that reduce stress in your life. Things like deep breathing, meditation, physical activity, and self-talk may be effective.

· Simplify: Hectic schedules may not allow for adequate down time, but it is important to find some quiet time each day with no demands. Another way to simplify your life is to de-clutter your living space.

· Sleep well: Making simple changes in routine, environment, diet, and other factors can help you achieve adequate sleep. Sleep disorders are common, and some are serious. An excellent resource to learn more about sleep is the K-State Research and Extension publication MF2830, Sleep: Want it, Need it, Get it.

· Surround yourself with positive people: When someone is feeling down, one of the best strategies is to spend time with positive, upbeat people. Laughter, encouragement, and positive thoughts can effectively help reverse negative thoughts.

The past three weeks I have had a chance to practice the points I listed above. By the time you read this I will have returned home from a road trip to the “Sunshine State.” Just as the cold weather was settling in for the holidays, we had loaded up the van to head to Naples, Florida, where we would celebrate Christmas and the wedding of our youngest son, Matt. When Matt proposed to Jane last January, they were excited to carry on the Krug family tradition of a December wedding.

Fast forward to September when Hurricane Ian devastated southwest Florida. The initial wedding venue the kids had reserved, was damaged beyond repair, but luckily they found another suitable and beautiful place to celebrate their wedding. The Airbnb we had reserved in March sustained major flood damage during the hurricane, but the host was optimistic that everything would be ready for us when we arrived on the 23rd. And it was!

It was a special week with our kids and grandkids enjoying each other’s company. Our time together included walks on the beach, cool dips in the backyard pool, and a night tour of the botanical gardens. We were introduced to party poppers by Janes family where we enjoyed their wonderful hospitality on Christmas Day. Wedding day was beautiful and all but a handful of guests had made it. (The Southwest Airline issues affected several guests)

It felt good to return home earlier in the week and get back to a normal routine. Here’s hoping that you enjoy good health and happiness, surrounded by positive people in 2023!

KRUG: Action plan for healthy living

Have you heard about radon? Do you wonder if your home is at risk for high radon levels? Would you like to learn more about radon and its risks? January is National Radon Action Month and Kansas Radon Action Month. Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at 12:15pm (Central Standard Time) Living Well Wednesday will offer an online webinar, “Know Your Risks”. The webinar will be presented by Brian Hanson, from the Kansas Radon Program. You can register online or scan the QR code found on the Cottonwood Extension Facebook Page. If you cannot watch on the 11th, the webinar will be recorded and placed on the KSRE Living Well Wednesday website.

Radon is a colorless, odorless gas produced naturally in some soils and is prevalent in Kansas. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths in non-smokers. Radon levels are low outdoors because its effects are diluted, but indoor levels can build and lead to lung cancer. Kansas soils generate significant amounts of radon leading to the potential for homes to have elevated concentrations of this naturally-occurring class A carcinogen.

The only way to know if there is radon in a home is to test. Winter is the best time for testing when homes are closed up from outside air. Radon screening kits can be purchased at the Extension Office for $7.00. The self-mailer kit includes full instructions for completing the test and returning it to a lab for analysis. We also have information booklets if you would like more information or are buying or selling a home. Stop by or call the office for more information.

CAMPBELL: Cover Your Acres Winter Conference, Jan. 17 & 18

Kansas State University will host a four-part series on land leasing strategies at 34 locations in Kansas beginning Jan. 18.

The series is titled, The Power of Negotiation and Communication: Land Leasing Strategies for Midwestern Agriculture Women, though K-State Research and Extension farm economist Robin Reid says the sessions are open to all participants.

“In Kansas, agricultural land covers more than 49 million acres,” Reid said. “Of that land, 55% is farmed or grazed with a lease agreement. Many farms and ranches rely on leased ground to have an adequate amount of land to maintain a viable farming operation.”

Reid said the program – held each week through Feb. 8 on Wednesday evenings – will teach principles of managing land leases as a tenant and landlord. “The goal is for participants to acquire skills they can apply directly their own agricultural lease situation,” she said.

· An overview of the agricultural economy, and how it affects land values and lease rates.

· Advantages and disadvantages of various types of leases.

· Why a lease agreement should be in writing and what it should include.

· Best practices of negotiating and communicating about a lease.

Reid said women are encouraged to attend because they have routinely become lease managers due to family circumstances.

“Women often become landowners through inheritance of a family estate or because they outlive their spouse,” she said. “Suddenly becoming a landowner and working with a farm tenant can be particularly challenging if you do not have knowledge of current farming practices, lease laws and going market rates.”

Reid said the program also will be helpful to farmers and ranchers who sometimes find themselves working with multiple landowners that, she notes, “are becoming more geographically and generationally removed from agriculture.”

BOOR: Women in Farm Program

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Mark Tallman with the Kansas Association of School Boards is embracing a new role with the agency in 2023.

"This is something I'm pretty excited about, after 40 years of lobbying, having a little bit of a different focus," Tallman said. "It's really to try to look more in depth at, what are the issues around trying to do improvement of our schools, meeting the goals of the Kansans can vision that the state board has set out, trying to do a little more deeper research into, what are our challenges, what things are working?"

Part of that research is already happening with visits to schools, including one here in central Kansas.

"One of the things that I did over the last month or so was visit our three Kansas Blue Ribbon schools," Tallman said. "That's a national designation of being a Blue Ribbon School in Kansas. I visited Cottonwood Elementary in Andover, R.L. Wright in Sedgwick, which is in southern Harvey County and then Morris Hill school, which is actually on the base at Fort Riley. I talked to school leaders there about what they think drove the fact that they were recognized for high achievement."

One emphasis for Tallman in his new role will be learning more about the needs of Kansas schools before kids enter kindergarten.

"One of the most important things that we can do to help kids succeed, particularly if they come from kind of disadvantaged backgrounds is stronger early childhood education programs," Tallman said. "Before the holiday break, the SPARK committee in state government, with some of the federal COVID dollars that they have to spend, has recommended millions of dollars to go into some efforts around early childhood education. I want to do a little more exploring about what that's going to mean, some of the work our state has done. We've had a federal grant to try to develop and expand early childhood programs. I want to look at some of the things that districts are doing in that area."

The main statehouse lobbying efforts for KASB will be led by Leah Fliter, a long-time lobbyist and former school board member.

Tallman begins new role with Kan. Association of School Boards

As I prepare to retire on February 3rd, I thought I would use my column space to share some of my “favorite” days as an Extension Agent.

· Teaching Stay Strong Stay Healthy to well over 300 older adults during the past 10 years. Folks aged 60-95 have enriched my life as much as I have theirs!

· Sharing my expertise related to fermenting sauerkraut or Kimchi with others in Extension, both in Kansas, Iowa and across the country. I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the excitement in the 59 fermentation workshop participants in Barton and Ellis Counties.

· Helping Medicare eligible adults review their prescription drug plan during open enrollment for the past 9 years. It is always rewarding when we find a plan that will save someone a significant amount of money.

· Kids Ag Day, always held on Wednesday after Labor Day, is the perfect chance to share with 4th graders from across the county where their food comes from.

· Sharing an Organwise presentation “Healthy from the inside out” with pre-schoolers and 1st graders. Little ones need to be introduced to what is healthy and what is not.

· Teaching “High-speed handwashing” to kids of all ages.

· Watching kids grow up in the 4-H Youth Development program. I have been around long enough that I am meeting the next generation!

· Teaching bicycle safety rules to school-agers and promoting safe bicycling to the entire community.

· Seeing the 10 fact sheets I have written in the past being published and used by Extension colleagues from around the state and shared with FCE members.

· Teaching a sewing workshop for 4-H youth – making pillowcases, back packs, pajama pants or walker bags to learn life skills.

· Collaborating with partners from across our county, through Be Well Barton County or Central Kansas Partnership. “Many hands really do make light work.”

· Developing a positive relationship with the executive board, team members, and YOU throughout my 37- year Extension career.

As you can see it was hard to narrow my favorite days down to a few. It’s been a good run!

Many of you are asking me who the next District Director will be when I retire. The Cottonwood Executive Board will be announcing the next District Director/Community Vitality Agent soon. I know you will provide them with opportunities to experience “favorite” days too.

KRUG: My favorite days as an Extension agent

Merry Christmas Everyone! At this time of year, we bring plants into our house to help decorate for the season. Many of these, such as trees and poinsettias are removed and discarded at the end of the season, but Christmas Cactus are plants that you can enjoy all year long! I found a short article on them to share with you this week that goes over care if you have one already, or what to do if you are looking at getting a Cactus. I hope you enjoy this and I hope each and every one of you has a Very Merry Christmas!&nbsp;

&nbsp;Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera bridgesii) and Thanksgiving Cactus (Schlumbergera truncata) are epiphytes native to the jungles of South America. Epiphytic plants grow on other plants and use them for support but not for nutrients. Though these cacti are different species, they will hybridize and produce varying stem shapes. Christmas cactus normally has smooth stem segments, and Thanksgiving Cactus has hook-like appendages on each segment. Both of these cacti prefer bright indirect light. 

Too much sun can result in the leaves turning yellow. Common household temperatures are fine. Soil should be kept constantly moist but not waterlogged. Give them a light fertilization every other week. Blooming will normally cease in late winter to early spring, but continue to keep them moist and fertilized until fall. 

During the fall, stop fertilizing, and give the plants only enough water so the stems do not shrivel in order to encourage flower bud formation. Though these plants seem to flower best if kept a little pot bound, flowers will diminish if they are too crowded. 

If you haven't repotted in several years, or if you notice a decrease in flowering from the previous year, move the plant to a larger pot in the spring. If possible, move the plants outside for the summer. Choose a shady spot because these plants will not tolerate full sun. Leave the plants outside until frost threatens. Normally, the plants will have received enough cool nights in the 50- to 55-degree range that flower buds will have formed. However, if they haven't, subjecting the plants to nights greater than 12 hours long and temperatures between 59 and 69 degrees can also generate flowers. Twenty-five consecutive long nights is enough for flower initiation. Place the plants in an unused room or cover them with a dark cloth or cardboard box to insure that they receive uninterrupted darkness. After the flower buds have formed, it takes an additional nine to 10 weeks for flowers to complete development and bloom.&nbsp;

An upcoming four-part extension workshop for women in agriculture will focus on the basics of land management, leasing and conservation for landlords and tenants.

“The Power of Negotiation and Communication: Land Leasing Strategies for Midwestern Ag Women”. Will be a 4-part workshop series conducted throughout the state. The Cottonwood Extension District in both Great Bend and Hays will be offering these workshops.

The series will focus on writing agricultural lease agreements, landlord-tenant relationships, negotiations and conservation practices. Workshops will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 18, Jan. 25, Feb. 1, and Feb.8.

The series of workshops cost $50 per person which includes dinner each night and participants should plan to attend each session. A virtual option is available for those unable to attend a workshop site, although in-person attendance is highly encouraged to better network with other attendees and interact with speakers.

CAMPBELL: Multi-state land management and leasing workshop planned

A new planner is one of my favorite things! Yes, I need it to keep me organized but I love opening a new planner with the potential for a new year!

A new year of fun – where do we plan family gatherings, vacations, or time with friends? What celebrations need to be a priority?

A new year of work – who can I impact through my work? Where do I plan programs with 4-H families, schools, or libraries for learning opportunities?

A new year of volunteering – where can I connect with my church family, with my community, or with other organizations to improve life around me?

A new year of partnerships – how can I collaborate with colleagues and community partners to better our connections and combined impact?

A new year of personal and professional development – where and how can I improve myself?

All of these questions relate to opening a new planner! In fairness, I started my new planner for 2023 back in October as I began adding priority dates for the new year.

We’ll have a couple of graduations to celebrate in our immediate family, as well as weddings and new babies for friends.

I have already filled in many dates for work events and activities for several months, and I’m excited about the potential this brings for interacting with 4-H families, locally and regionally, as well as youth across our school districts. Important dates include 4-H Club Days which provide our 4-H members with an opportunity for learning in Communication Skills, a regional 4-H Fiber Arts Day, and presenting as a part of GBReads.

Volunteering includes serving as a cantor for my church and an officer in a state cattle organization that I am enthusiastic about. These provide moments to share my gifts while receiving so much in return as I refuel myself.

I consider myself a life-long learner and that has impacts both personal and professional. I have several opportunities to attend trainings and conferences this year, and I look forward to expanding my thought process and my skill set.

I see all the possibilities of a new planner and a new year! What does a new planner hold for you? I am wishing you a new year of learning, of good work, and finding how you impact the world around you!

BERAN: A new planner

Living Well Wednesday is a virtual learning series hosted by K-State Research and Extension, Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) professionals from across the state of Kansas. The 2022 Series focused on a variety of essential skills that empower you and your family to live, work and thrive.

Recently, three KSRE Specialists and Extension Agents presented “Healthy and Prepared for the Holidays.” They came together to share tips on how to keep your menu simple and fun during this busy holiday season. The presenters shared how to prepare meals ahead of time, how to make healthy modifications to recipes, and how to repurpose leftovers. The presenters included: Christina Holmes, Extension Specialist; Ashley Svaty, Extension Specialist; and Melinda Daily, Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, Sunflower District.

In November, Living Well Wednesday focused on Coping with Loss and Loneliness During the Holidays. Melissa Atchison, Pastor, Manhattan Mennonite Church presented on how sometimes the holiday season is a joyous time, but not for everyone. The presenter shares “you have permission to feel how you feel” and more in this helpful webinar. There are many resources listed for further exploration.

Finally, Dr. Elizabeth Kiss, Professor and Extension Specialist and Joy Miller, Johnson County Extension Agent presented on “Simplify Your Holiday-Focusing on What Matters.” As the holiday season nears, are you looking forward to it or do you dread the time, money and energy involved? Understand what makes the holiday special for you, then plan to celebrate according to your holiday values. View the webinar for more ways to focus on what matters.

Kansas Ag-Climate Update for November 2022

The Kansas Ag-Climate Update is a joint effort between our climate and extension specialists. Every month the update includes a brief summary of that month, agronomic impacts, relevant maps and graphs, 1-month temperature and precipitation outlooks, monthly extremes, and notable highlights.

November 2022: Exceptional drought conditions across the state

The statewide average temperature for November was 41.2°F, or 2.1°F below normal. This ranks as the 49th coldest November out of the last 128 years, dating back to 1895. November was the first below normal month statewide since March. All divisions finished the month below normal; departures ranged from -2.9°F in the southwest to -1.6°F in northeast Kansas.

The statewide average precipitation for November was 1.44”, or 0.14” above normal. This was the first above normal month statewide since May. Five of the nine climate divisions finished the month above normal, but northwest and west central remained very dry, both receiving less than 10% of their normal monthly precipitation. Combined with last month, the three western Kansas climate divisions rank in their top 5 for the driest October-November on record. The 0.15” total for west central Kansas is the driest October-November on record in that division, breaking the old record of 0.16” set in 1939.
