This year’s short, thin wheat crop is generating some discussion regarding what to do with weeds at this point in the growing season. Broadleaf weeds that grow rapidly at the end of the growing season present several potential concerns, such as harvest difficulties, dockage problems, weed seed production, and soil water depletion. Unfortunately, once wheat has reached the boot stage, there are no herbicide options until wheat begins to dry down and herbicides can be applied as harvest aids. The decision to spend resources on an herbicide application that will not directly influence crop yield is a difficult decision to make; however, pre-harvest applications may be beneficial this year.

Herbicides labeled for use as harvest aids in wheat are listed below. There are differences in how quickly they act to control the weeds, the interval requirement between application and grain harvest, and the level or length of control achieved. All of them will require thorough spray coverage to be the most effective. Paraquat is sometimes mentioned as a possible herbicide for pre-harvest application but is not labeled for pre-harvest treatment in wheat. Application of paraquat to wheat is an illegal treatment and can result in quarantine and destruction of the harvested grain, along with severe fines.

Herbicides for use as pre-harvest weed control options in wheat. Metsulfuron (Ally, others), 2,4-D LVE, Dicamba, Glyphosate, Carfentrazone (Aim EC, others) and Saflufenacil (Sharpen).

CAMPBELL: Pre-harvest weed control in wheat

First identified in 2008 as a potential pest of soybeans in the United States, trochanter mealybugs (Pseudococcus sp.) have a wide variety of hosts, including corn, sorghum and alfalfa. While their role as a pest of soybean is still not fully understood, it appears that this mealybug has the potential to be a problem in alfalfa and multiple infestations have been reported in southwest Kansas this season.

Trochanter mealybugs are small (~2mm) unarmored, scale insects. They are flattened, whitish, and wax-covered and feed on plant roots removing fluids from the plant with piercing-sucking mouthparts. Due to their small size and life history, they often go undetected. The motionless mealybugs you see with a dense wax coating are all females; large egg sacs are produced under the wax when mature. The eggs hatch and the immature “crawlers” are how the mealybugs disperse between plants. This stage is difficult to control because they can hide in extremely tight spaces. Males, who do not feed, will often go unnoticed as they are smaller, winged and look nothing like the females.

Mealybugs are also moved readily in irrigation water as the waxy covering on their bodies helps them survive being submerged. These insects tend to move the greatest distances with the help of ants. In fact, increased ant activity in infested fields is often noticed before mealybugs are discovered. The ants are tending the mealybugs to eat the honeydew the bugs excrete and in turn the ants protect them from predators.

Plants infested with these mealybugs typically look like they have a potassium deficiency with yellowed leaf margins, stunted growth, and parts of a field may fail to adequately green up. If fields display these symptoms and they cannot be explained by other factors, plants should be dug up and roots examined for the presence of these insects. Again, the presence of ants may be a clue and often small, sunken trails on the soil surface can be found that ants are using to move mealybugs around the field in.

There are no thresholds or control measures for this pest, and it is important to note that their waxy covering would make mealybugs very hard to control with contact insecticides, even when feeding in exposed locations. Crop rotation may help, but this pest can survive on several crop and weed species. Attempts to control the ants in a field would not eliminate the mealybug population.

The distribution of these mealybugs in Kansas alfalfa is not well understood. If you do find trochanter mealybugs in your fields, please do not hesitate to contact your local extension agent. CAMPBELL: Mealybugs active in southwest Kansas

One thing more destructive than the moth may be the cat trying to chase it. The spring season has seen an abundance of army cutworms, more commonly called millers or moths, in central Kansas. The moths may not know it, but Alicia Boor, agriculture and natural resources agent in the Cottonwood District for K-State Research and Extension, said the insects are migrating to be bear food.

"That's why we're seeing all these moths," she said. "They're actually migrating up to the mountains. They spend the summer in the mountains, and that's where the grizzly bears will find them. They say their fat content equals about a half-calorie per moth, so grizzly bears can eat up to 40,000 of them in a day as they're preparing over the summer for their winter hibernation."

Boor said moth populations ebb and flow like most things in nature, but dry conditions may be a cause for more of the insects than usual this year. While they can damage certain crops as larvae, that is usually the exception rather than the norm.

"The army cutworm really thrives on winter annuals," Boor said. "Sometimes you'll see army cutworm damage out of wheat and other winter annuals that are out in the field. You can have them in your lawn but that's not as common."

As adults, moths feed on nectar and are a food source for other animals. The term "miller" is used for any moth that arrives in large numbers and applies to various species of the insect.&nbsp;

Female cutworm adults deposit 1,000-3,000 eggs on the soil surface or under dirt clods. Given susceptibility to soil-borne fungi, low soil moisture may reduce fungal activity and result in more larvae making it into adulthood. Larvae tend to eat the tender blades of wheat, but often leave behind the parts that make regrowth possible. When food sources run out, an "army" of larvae may move to find more food sources.

The larvae finish feeding in late April and early May, burrow into the soil, and emerge two to three weeks later as the moth. To avoid daylight, they burrow in cracks and crevices and become a nuisance to property owners. Turning off porch lights at night and replacing white lights with yellow lights can help reduce the number of moths attracted to a residence.

A researcher at Yellowstone has noted the importance of the moths to bear populations, especially as other food sources decline. Reduction in the numbers of moths in the Midwest due to pesticides will impact that food source for bears in the West.&nbsp;

Bear food: Moths in Barton Co. on migration path west

Rabbits can cause trouble in the garden year-round due to their appetite for a great variety of crops. As young plants emerge and develop this time of year, rabbits are feasting. Potatoes, tomatoes, corn, squash, cucumbers and certain pepper types are not favored by rabbits but more susceptible plants can be protected.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Fencing the area with two-foot high, fine mesh (1-inch or smaller) can effectively keep out rabbits. Use stakes or electric fence posts to support the mesh.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Floating row covers are typically a solution for getting a jumpstart on the growing season by creating a warmer microclimate around the planter beds. It can also serve as a protection from insects and wildlife. Choose a lightweight, white fabric such as polyester for row covers to be used for pest exclusion. Monitor the temperature underneath the cover and remove it if the temperature climbs above 90 degrees F.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Repellants, trapping and shooting are other controls sometimes used by gardeners. Repellents typically require frequent reapplications for best control and may be poisonous making them unsafe to use on plants for human consumption. Live traps can be used to capture rabbits and relocate them to another location several miles away. Getting rabbits to enter the trap can be tricky considering the buffet of food available in the garden, but using a tightly rolled cabbage leaf held closed with a toothpick can work. If safe and legal, shooting can also be effective.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Motion-activated sprinklers can scare off predators. Attached to the garden hose, the sprinkler releases short bursts of water when motion is detected. Contech, Orbit and Havahart are suppliers that advertise protecting up to 1,000 square feet.

On July 22, 2023, the Revitalization Committee will host the Hard Rock Run beginning at 7:30 a.m. The 5K route includes City streets and portions of SW 110 Avenue, SW 60 Road, Pawnee Rock Cemetery and SW 112 Avenue. The event is scheduled for two hours. The Commission will consider blocking one lane of the roads to keep the runners safe. Sheriff Brian Bellendir supports this action.

&nbsp; &nbsp;B. RESOLUTION 2023-14: A Resolution Amending Article III and Article XIII of the Barton County Zoning Regulations, Including the Official Zoning Map of Barton County, Version II: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Judy Goreham, Environmental Manager, will provide details. Both the Zoning and Subdivision Regulations, as reviewed by the Barton County Planning Commission, were adopted in 2000 and have been revised since that time. The amendments to Article III, District Regulations, and Article XIII, Construction and Definition, allow for Agriculture Related Business, Agritourism and Small-Scale Non-Agricultural Business uses as well as update several current definitions. The Planning Commission recommends the adoption of the proposed revisions.

&nbsp; &nbsp;C. RESOLUTION 2023-15: Establishing Commission Districts for Barton County, Kansas, and Rescinding Resolution 2021-03, Same, adopted January 18, 2021: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Bev Schmeidler, County Clerk, will present details. At least once every three years, the Commission shall review districting to assure that each of the five districts is as compact and equal in population as possible.

Barton County Commission meeting agenda (5/17)

You don’t have to go to faraway countries – Greece, Cyprus or France – to benefit from a popular style of eating.

In fact, Sharolyn Jackson says the Mediterranean diet is more a concept than a place.

“It really is an eating style that can have any flavor profile ” said Jackson, the state leader of K-State Research and Extension’s popular Walk Kansas program, a team-based challenge that encourages people to walk, jog, run, bike, swim and move however they want to live more healthfully.

As part of this year’s Walk Kansas, which wraps ups up May 20, K-State Research and Extension offered a six-week pilot course on eating the Mediterranean way.

“The Med way is just healthy eating,” Jackson said. “But there are a lot of reasons why people feel kind of stuck when it comes to healthy eating. They think that it’s too hard, or too confusing. They get a lot of mixed messages from different places. And then they have this idea that it’s too expensive. They think it doesn’t taste good…or they don’t have enough time to prepare foods or plan what they’re going to eat. And maybe they have limited cooking skills.”

Instead, the Mediterranean eating style can be simple, and summarized in seven steps:

· Change your protein. Choose white meat poultry, like chicken and turkey, and lean cuts of meat. Eat fish and seafood at least 2-3 times per week. Replace some of the meat in your diet with plant proteins. Eat red meat less often and choose leaner cuts. Eliminate processed meats or greatly limit them.

· Swap your fats. Instead of butter, use olive oil or canola oil for cooking foods. Don’t eliminate fats; just choose better ones.

· Eat more vegetables. Three cups of vegetables, per day, are recommended. Choose dark greens, and a variety of colors.

· Eat more fruits. Get at least two servings/cups of fruit per day. Choose a variety of colors and include berries often.

· Snack on nuts and seeds. Stick to about three ounces – about three small handfuls – so that you’re not over-doing it on the calories. Avoid nuts and seeds that are candied, honey roasted or high in salt.

· Choose whole grains. Choose whole grains like oatmeal, quinoa, brown rice, popcorn and whole grain bread and pasta. Look for the word “whole” as the first item on the ingredient list.

· Rethink your sweets. Limit intake to no more than three servings per week of high-sugar foods and drinks. Fruit is a good substitute for high-sugar desserts.

These recommendations, don’t need to be abrupt changes. Move yourself slowly away (from your current eating habits) so that you feel like you’re not being deprived, but rather working toward making it a habit.

These recommendations come from a curriculum titled, Med Instead of meds, developed by North Carolina state professor and registered dietitian nutritionist Carolyn Dunn. Additional resources are available online at https://medinsteadofmeds.com.

Up to two-thirds of chronic diseases – like diabetes and heart disease – can be prevented by lifestyle changes, specifically diet and exercise. Research has shown the connection between lifestyle and chronic disease for some time, and it’s provided insight into some of the ways to move people in the right direction for making those lifestyle changes.

The Ellis County office of the Cottonwood District will have a Med Instead of Meds Taste Testing party on May 24, 2023 at 12:00pm at 601 Main to celebrate the end of Walk Kansas. KOERNER: Healthy lifestyle changes are key to successful aging

As the Cottonwood Extension District
completed its Walk Kansas programing, a part of the program will be featured at
an upcoming community event.

MED instead of MEDS, a program
that helps introduce the health benefits of a Mediterranean diet, will be
featured at noon, May 24, at the extension district office at 601 Main.

“We have had
some good discussions after the webinars and taste-tested a few recipes,” said family
and consumer wellness agent Monique Koerner.

The program was featured in watch
parties during Walk Kansas, and Koerner said she hopes to spur additional
interest with the upcoming session.

“To kind
of wrap up Walk Kansas, we're going to be doing a Mediterranean taste-testing
party,” she said. “The MED instead of MEDS program is basically focusing on
your diet.”

The program
helps participants focus on healthy eating, which can stave off the need for
medical interventions.

“Some of
those things that they have included is, for instance, eating lots of fruits
and vegetables,” Koerner said. “Research shows that if you have nine or more servings
of fruits and vegetables, it results in a 60 percent reduction in
cardiovascular disease.”

She said
the significant impact could be a motivator to try the diet.

“More
aspects of the program are eating whole grains, eating more fish and seafood,
eating nuts and seeds for snacks, replacing solid fats with olive oil, using
herbs and spices,” Koerner said. “And then, of course, they also throw in there
things like physical activity, enjoying your meals, really focusing on family
and friends and slowing down the mindful eating and then limiting sugar.”

The
webinars provided different focuses, with practical ways to incorporate a Mediterranean
diet.

“Sometimes
it can be overwhelming when we think about having to change our whole diet,”
Koerner said. “But really, you can take bits and pieces out of this. And I
think it's important to maybe try smaller steps along the way rather than
trying to overhaul everything in our lives all at once. Because then it gets
overwhelming. And we tend to slide back into our old routines.”

Overall
the program provided a continuum for users to follow.

“It's not
that you have to do this or have to do that,” Koerner said. “It's a look at
your whole menu and where could you maybe stick a few more, fish meals, or
maybe switch up your snacks to eat a fruit or a vegetable or nuts or seeds, rather
than some of those sweet treats.”

“It's
eat more of this and less of this. So, it's not like you have to cut a certain
thing out of your diet. And I think That's where we kind of get into trouble
too. If we remove all of the good things out of our diet, or we remove certain
food crew or something we like, then we tend to fall back the other way, when
we have a little bit of stress or some little hiccup in life happens.”

Other topics
include meal planning, using leftovers, reducing food waste and portion sizes, she
said.

And Koerner
will present some of the best “tips, tricks and hacks,” she said during the
upcoming event.

🎙 Residents offered opportunity to explore MED instead of MEDS

I hope that you are enjoying learning about the wide variety of 4-H projects available to our youth! In 4-H, we look for a SPARK that inspires a young person to learn, grow, explore, and potentially lead to a career or lifetime hobby. Any of these project areas may just be the spark that inspires someone in your world.

This week we are looking at some very different projects.

Many of us have had a dog at some point in our life and learning to care for and train a dog is a big responsibility! Youth in the Dog Care and Training project learn about different breeds and their characteristics and why some dogs are better suited for different families. Youth explore dog behavior and body language as well as grooming and nutrition. In this unique partnership, youth and their dog work on obedience training with a goal of showmanship and agility training.

Another interesting project area with the potential for a career is Home Environment. This project explores decorating a room, and experimenting with colors and patterns. While I had no goal of interior design, I did participate in this project in 4-H and, with the help of my dad, designed and decorated my bedroom. This is a project I look back fondly on as it challenged me to coordinate my personal style with a budget, colors, furniture, and fabrics.

An active and extensive area of 4-H is Shooting Sports! This project area covers a variety of disciplines from Archery to Muzzleloading. Important aspects include safety first then learning the skills of a specific discipline. We have a great group of youth across the district who are representing themselves, their clubs, and our program at local, regional, and state matches. Shooting Sports is represented during the fair by poster displays so be sure to check those out!

BERAN: Some 'very different' 4-H projects

Even though we are in a severe drought, the date has been set for the Barton County Wheat Demonstration Plot Field Day. “Sometimes we can learn more in periods of drought than in wetter years” says Stacy Campbell, Crop Production Agent for the Cottonwood Extension District.

The Barton County Wheat Plot Field Day is scheduled for Thursday, May 18, beginning at 8:30 a.m. It is located from highway 281 North of Hoisington on the Galatia blacktop, NW 190 Road go 1 mile west, turn south onto NW 50 Avenue go 1/8 mile. Tim Maier is the cooperator and K-State has an intensive management test trail looking as well looking at different practices of planting populations, fungicides, and fertility, along with many varieties to view and discuss.

No RSVP necessary to attend, coffee, juice, water and donuts will be provided courtesy of American Ag Credit and Ed Junior Farm.

In case of inclement weather, it will be held indoors at Tim Maier’s Farm Shed, 525 NW 190 Road.

CAMPBELL: Barton Co. field day May 18, Ellis Co. June 1

She’s not meaning to throw shade to social media, but Rebecca McMahon knows that ‘Instagram Gardens’ aren’t likely to do well in Kansas’ climate.&nbsp;

“Many of those resources that you run across on Instagram are from the Pacific Northwest or the Northeast or even the Great Lakes region,” said McMahon, administrator of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/localfoods/index.html" target="_blank">Kansas State University’s local foods systems program</a>, who grew up in the cooler climate of northern Wisconsin.&nbsp;

“All of those places have much milder climates and much cooler summers than we have in Kansas, so it’s so critical to know what to plant and when in Kansas because the weather is going to fight back.”&nbsp;

McMahon is a co-author of the newest version of the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/pubs/S51.pdf" target="_blank">Kansas Garden Guide</a>, which was released this spring and available online from the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bookstore.ksre.ksu.edu/" target="_blank">K-State Research and Extension bookstore</a>.&nbsp;

“The Kansas Garden Guide has been around a long time; in fact, I have a copy from 1983 that is about 22 pages and includes line drawings,” McMahon said. “I’ve even had folks tell me that they have versions from the 1970s and earlier. So, as with many things, every so often they need an update and some changes to better reflect the needs of the gardeners that use the guide.”&nbsp;

McMahon said the Kansas Garden Guide was last updated in 2010 with 76 pages. The 2023 version has expanded to 202 pages with full-color pictures and illustrations. The intent of the Kansas Garden Guide is to provide assistance specific to gardening in Kansas’ climate.&nbsp;

“I think one of the big changes is there's a lot more emphasis in this guide on options for folks with smaller gardens, like we often see in our more urban settings… and accessible gardens for folks that either don't have space or the physical ability to have a large traditional type of garden,” McMahon said.&nbsp;

Much of the content is also published with new gardeners in mind, she adds.&nbsp;

“One of the things I noticed when I started looking at older versions of the guide is that there was this assumption that people had grown up as gardeners,” McMahon said. “But what we see anymore is that many of our gardeners are not coming to it with experience. Maybe their parents, grandparents or great grandparents didn’t grow up around the garden.”&nbsp;

McMahon said experienced gardeners also will benefit because “we’re always learning more.” She said one of the advancements in the past decade has been agriculture’s understanding of soil chemistry, including organic matter and soil biology.&nbsp;

In addition to horticulture experts, the Kansas Garden Guide includes updated information from K-State specialists in entomology, plant pathology, food safety and more.&nbsp;

BOOR: Kansas Garden Guide

Seems like it is everywhere! You have probably heard about the risks of consuming too much sugar but what are some practical tips to reduce added sugars in our diet? Added sugars are sugars and syrups added to foods/ beverages when they are processed or prepared. Added sugar is in 80 percent of the products at the grocery store. Most of us eat and drink more sugar than we realize.

Adding sugar to processed foods makes them more appealing and tastier. Sugar gives baked items flavor, texture and color. It helps preserve foods and it fuels fermentation, enabling bread to rise. Sugar also serves as a bulking agent in baked goods and ice cream, and it balances the acidity of foods containing vinegar and tomatoes. Sugar is often added to foods advertised as low-fat because it gives the food more flavor after removing the fat.

So, how much added sugar is too much? The Dietary Guidelines for American recommend you limit added sugars to less than 10% of daily calories. If you eat about 2,000 calories a day, you should limit added sugars to about 12 teaspoons or 48 grams. To put this in perspective, a 12-ounce can of soda has about 10 teaspoons (40 grams) of sugar.

You will be surprised by products that contain high amounts of added sugar, so the best way to make informed decisions is to read labels. The Nutrition Facts label displays the total amount of all sugars (natural and added) found in a serving of the product. There is also a line for added sugars. Another option is to look at the ingredient list on the package. Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, so if sugar is one of the first few ingredients the product is likely high in added sugars.

· Start by drinking water and other beverages that don’t contain sugar or artificial sugars. One rule that many find useful is to not drink sugar. Add fresh fruit and herbs to your water for a bit of flavor.

· When you drink fruit juice, make sure it is 100% juice, and better yet, eat the fruit!

· Choose breakfast cereals with less sugar.

· Go for fresh or frozen fruit as dessert.

· Buy canned fruit packed in water or juice, not syrup.

· Choose nutrient-rich snacks like vegetables, fruits, low-fat cheese, nuts, whole grain crackers, and low-calorie yogurt instead of candy, pastries, and cookies.

· When you have a dessert high in sugar, share it with others. Sometimes all you need is a bite or two to satisfy a craving.

· Store-bought marinara sauces are often high in sugar and salt. The best is to make your own from fresh tomatoes.

CAMPBELL: Wheat Rx Field Day – May 25 in NW Kansas

May is an excellent time to fertilize cool-season lawns such as tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass if they will be irrigated throughout the summer. Non-irrigated lawns often go through a period of summer dormancy because of drought and do not need this fertilization.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; May is a good time to fertilize because the springtime flush of growth characteristic of these grasses has tapered off, so the fertilizer you apply will be less likely to cause excessive shoot growth than if you fertilized at a full rate in April. Slow-release nitrogen sources are ideal. These nitrogen sources promote controlled growth, which is desirable as the stressful summer weather approaches. Relatively few fertilizers available to the homeowner supply ALL of the nitrogen in the slowly available form. But one such product that is widely available is Milorganite. Other such products available in the retail market include cottonseed meal, alfalfa-based fertilizers, and any other products derived from plants or animals. (Bloodmeal is an exception, and contrary to popular belief, the nitrogen it supplies is quickly available.) These products are all examples of natural organic fertilizers. They typically contain less than 10 percent nitrogen by weight, so compared to most synthetic fertilizers, more product must be applied to get the same amount of nitrogen. Translation: they are more expensive! Apply enough to give the lawn one pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. For example, if the fertilizer is 6 percent nitrogen by weight, you will need to apply almost 17 pounds of fertilizer product per 1,000 square feet.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Summer lawn fertilizers that contain at least a portion of the nitrogen as slow-release are fine to use as well. Be sure to follow label directions. If cost is prohibitive, you can use the less expensive quick-release (i.e., soluble) sources, but split the application into two doses as follows: apply enough to give the lawn 0.5 lb nitrogen per 1,000 square feet in May and again in early June.

BOOR: Fertilize cool season

I’m writing this article on May Day! I was always excited for May Day when I was a kid because my mother and I had a tradition. I would make construction paper baskets and then we would go around Hays looking for flowers such as tulips and lilacs that were blooming. We would knock on doors and politely ask the homes occupant if we could snip a couple of flowers for our May Day baskets. Most of the time people were happy to help. Then we would place the flowers and some other sweet treats in my home-made construction paper baskets and take them to a few friends and my teachers. With May Day baskets, you ring the door bell and then leave to allow the basket to be an anonymous gift for the recipient. I was always so excited to go to school the next day and see if my teachers and friends enjoyed their May Day baskets. I share this story because May is also Mental Health Awareness month. This story brings to light many things we can do for our mental health. If you feel like you’re stuck in a rut mentally and emotionally, a few simple changes may help you break free:

• Take media breaks. Limit how much you are watching, reading, or listening to news stories and social media. Instead, get outside and enjoy the sunshine, warmth and breeze.

• Take care of your body. Get plenty of sleep, eat a healthy, balanced diet and exercise regularly.

• Make time to unwind. Try to do some other activities you enjoy.

• Connect with others. Do something kind for someone.

Making May Day baskets can incorporate many of these items such as getting outside and enjoying nature or get some exercise, connecting with others, and doing enjoyable activities. Giving to others can help you change your mindset.

May Day baskets can also be a wonderful parent-child activity to do together. What better way to help a parent or child’s mental health then spending time together doing something fun and meaningful? If you do it yearly, it can become a tradition. Traditions within families help children feel a sense of belonging and worth.

 </figure>I’m writing this article on May Day! I was always excited for May Day when I was a kid because my mother and I had a tradition. I would make construction paper baskets and then we would go around Hays looking for flowers such as tulips and lilacs that were blooming. We would knock on doors and politely ask the homes occupant if we could snip a couple of flowers for our May Day baskets. Most of the time people were happy to help. Then we would place the flowers and some other sweet treats in my home-made construction paper baskets and take them to a few friends and my teachers. With May Day baskets, you ring the door bell and then leave to allow the basket to be an anonymous gift for the recipient. I was always so excited to go to school the next day and see if my teachers and friends enjoyed their May Day baskets. I love getting to highlight all of the different projects that 4-H offers! While livestock is usually the first thing that people think of, I have highlighted eighteen projects over the last few weeks and, while several have been related to agriculture, none have been our livestock projects.

This week I am starting off with the Rabbit project! Rabbits are a great small animal project and help teach animal science and responsibility as well as a multitude of specific features of different breeds, and grooming and showmanship. I had no idea there were so many types of rabbits! Additionally, youth can experience learning to judge rabbits.

Another small species project is poultry. While we generally think of chickens, the poultry project can include turkeys, geese, and ducks. Youth also have the opportunity to learn about other types of poultry, about eggs and candling, and can experience learning to poultry judge.

Nearly everyone has had a pet at some point and learning responsibility for feeding and care is a big deal! The Pet project lets 4-H youth explore different types of pets and how to care for a variety from fish to cats. Youth learn about potential hazards for pets in the home, about nutritional needs, and about diseases and symptoms. This is a great project for kids who want to explore the first steps of veterinary science.

Like any animal, the more that rabbits, poultry, and most pets are handled, the easier it is for youth to showcase their animal and what they have learned while gaining confidence and practicing communication skills in talking to a judge.

It has never been more important to talk about stress and mental strain each one of us may be experiencing. Sustained higher levels of stress can lead to depression, anxiety, fatigue, and other triggers that cause a greater propensity for attempting suicide. The stigma of mental health can also make it difficult for people to feel that they can reach out for support. There are a number of helpful sources available for people in need and I will highlight those today.

The National Suicide helpline is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling or texting “988”. Support services are confidential and free of charge. This helpline is now a streamlined version of the suicide hotline and involves the ability to call and talk with someone, or text the number and use the text version if you do not want to talk.

Local resources are also available. In the Great Bend area, the Center for Counseling and Consultation can be reached on their confidential crisis line 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 800-875-2544 or 620-792-2544 as well as at their website&nbsp;<a href="https://thecentergb.org/" target="_blank">https://thecentergb.org</a>. In the Hays area, High Plains Mental Health is there to help. Contract them at 785-628-2871 or on their crisis line 24/7 at 800-432-0333. But, mostly if you need help, please seek it. Your friends and family need you.

BOOR: Mental Health Awareness Month approaching

A popular guide to gardening in Kansas has undergone a major makeover that one of its authors said helps to “better reflect the needs and experiences of a wide range of Kansas gardeners, especially our newest gardeners.”

An updated version of the Kansas Garden Guide – which in 2022 was downloaded 35,931 times, or about 100 times a day – will be available to order by early May from the K-State Research and Extension bookstore.

The guide already is available to view online in its entirety. Viewers can print pages that relate to specific information.

The updated guide is chalked full of information from new things learned about growing plants in Kansas and understanding the science of soils, plants, and microorganisms better.

The updated publication reflects changes in practices, as well. Also, the way that people think about and approach gardening changes over time. Gardens today are usually smaller and there are many new gardeners that have started gardening over the past several years.

The new guide, has expanded to 202 pages complete with full-color pictures and illustrations. The Kansas Garden Guide – originally printed in the early 1980s -- was last printed in 2010, and included 76 full color pages.

The Kansas Garden Guide focuses on what you need to know to have success in Kansas challenging climate.In Kansas, home gardeners produce $20 to $25 million worth of vegetables each year, according to information published in the new guide. These vegetables not only help Kansans save money on food costs, but also contribute to overall nutrition and health.
