No fouls are necessary for a pair of upcoming free-throw shooting contests.
The 52nd Annual Elks Hoop Shoot is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11 in the Russell Junior-Senior High School gymnasium. Pratt-Skyline High School will also host an event that Saturday at 10 a.m. The national contest is for kids age 8-13. More than three million participants across the nation entered last year's contest, which is broken down into age categories of 8-9, 10-11, and 12-13.
Each contestant will shoot 25 free throws. The boys and girl in each age group will advance to the district competition held in Pratt on Jan. 25. Winners of a later national competition will have their names inscribed on the Elks National Hoop Shoot plaque a the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.
The Knights of Columbus will host its Annual Free Throw Championship for boys and girls ages 9 through 14, at noon on Sunday, Jan. 12 at the Hoisington Activity Center. The event is free and open to all area youth, but a birth certificate is required for age verification, The contest provides an athletic outlet and encourages the values of sportsmanship and healthy competition.
