Alcorn State pays visit to Wichita State

The NFL is requiring players, coaches and other team personnel to receive a COVID-19 booster by Dec. 27.

In a memo sent to teams on Monday and obtained by The Associated Press, the league said: “Given the increased prevalence of the virus in our communities, our experts have recommended that we implement the CDC’s recommendation.”

The league’s requirement extends to all Tier 1 and Tier 2 individuals who have previously received the vaccine. The CDC recommends an individual who received a second Pfizer or Moderna shot to complete the primary vaccine series more than six months earlier should receive a booster shot. An individual that received the Johnson and Johnson shot more than two months earlier should receive a booster shot.

The following do not have to meet the requirement:

—An individual who is not eligible for a booster pursuant to the CDC definition.

—An individual who is in the 90-day test holiday after a confirmed positive COVID-19 test

—An individual who received monoclonal antibodies within the immediately preceding 90

—An individual whose “S” antibody level on an antibody test administered via BRL (BioReference Lab) at the club facility is 2500 or greater.

The league says any individual who is not currently subject to the requirement for boosters will be required to obtain the booster within 14 days of becoming eligible.

Teams were asked to provide booster shots to all eligible tiered staff as soon as possible, and to consider making booster shots available for player and staff families and cohabitants.

A season-high total of 36 players were placed on the COVID-19/reserve list Monday.

Nowell scores 22, leads Kansas State past Green Bay, 82-64

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Las Vegas Raiders were last seen in Kansas City taking a victory lap around Arrowhead Stadium in their team buses, and they decided it was wise to stomp on the Chiefs’ logo at midfield shortly before kickoff Sunday.

They probably regret both of those ideas.

Patrick Mahomes threw his first two touchdown passes in nearly a month, Clyde Edwards-Helaire added two more scores on the ground, and the Chiefs’ suddenly stingy defense forced five turnovers in rolling to a record-setting 48-9 victory over the Raiders that kept them comfortably atop the AFC West.

“You don’t want people coming into your stadium and trying to disrespect things you’ve built,” Mahomes said. “So for us, there was a little more motivation to go against a really good football team that we have a rivalry against.”

Derek Gore’s 51-yard TD run with 7:19 left in the fourth quarter allowed Kansas City (9-4) to eclipse the largest margin of victory in a series that began in 1960 and has been played 126 times. The previous record was 35 points in 1964.

Tyrann Mathieu had an interception and fumble recovery, Mike Hughes forced two fumbles and returned another 23 yards for a touchdown, and the reigning AFC champions built a 35-0 first-half lead before cruising to their sixth consecutive win.

They’ve won eight of their last nine against the Raiders (6-7), outscoring them 89-23 in two meetings this season.

“I think everybody was clicking,” said Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who improved to 15-3 against the Raiders. “The neat part is we have a chance to be even better. We just have to keep the foot on the pedal as we go.”

Reid also joined Marty Schottenheimer and Hank Stram as the only coaches to win 100 games in Kansas City.

Derek Carr had 266 yards passing, much of it going to Hunter Renfrow, who caught 13 of 14 targets for 117 yards and a score. But Renfrow also had one of the Raiders’ four fumbles, as did Josh Jacobs, who was held to 24 yards rushing.

“I don’t have a lot of words for it,” Raiders coach Rich Bissacia said. “It started with a fumble the first play of the game. As it went on, we missed more and more tackles. We had more dropped passes. Penalties on defense, gave up explosive plays. Struggled to protect the quarterback. Struggled to run the football. And on top of that, missed a PAT.”

Indeed, the Kansas City dominance began with the game’s first play, when Jacobs was shoved back about 3 yards and lost the ball in the process. Hughes alertly picked it up and waltzed 23 yards to give the Chiefs a 7-0 lead.

The real onslaught began a few minutes later.

Mahomes capped a five-play, 80-yard drive with a 23-yard pass to Darrel Williams, the first touchdown pass thrown by him since the last of his five in mid-November in Las Vegas. After a quick punt, he marched the Chiefs another 80 yards in seven plays, and Edwards-Helaire scooted into the end zone to make it 21-0.

Then the Chiefs’ nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award got into the act.

Mathieu was there to pick off Carr when his pass slipped through Foster Moreau’s hands, and the Chiefs needed a mere nine plays before Mahomes hit Josh Gordon in the end zone. It was the first TD scored by the oft-troubled wide receiver since Sept. 8, 2019, when he caught a pass from Tom Brady for New England in a game against Pittsburgh.

On the next drive, Mathieu was in the right spot when Renfrow coughed up the ball for the Raiders’ third turnover of the first half. The Chiefs breezed downfield again and Edwards-Helaire’s second TD run made it 35-0, putting the game out of reach before the teams even hit the halftime locker room.

After that, it was a matter of the Chiefs driving home a simple point: Don’t disrespect us in our house. The Raiders took&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-kansas-city-football-andy-reid-kansas-city-chiefs-57897ecc354e9124f8370b189afee9b2">a celebratory victory lap</a>&nbsp;in their buses after a win at Kansas City last season, and then there was Sunday’s gesture before the game.

“I would have been upset, too, if I was them,” said Raiders linebacker K.J. Wright, adding the pregame huddle at midfield was a spur-of-the-moment idea. “They responded to their anger. We didn’t respond when they did that.”

The Chiefs should have had another scoop-and-score by Armani Watts midway through the fourth quarter, when Carr was clocked from behind by Alex Okafor. The ball came loose but the officials whistled that Carr was down. Referee Brad Allen sheepishly reversed the call after a video review, but it still cost Kansas City a touchdown.

Chiefs CB L’Jarius Sneed remained in his hometown of Minden, Louisiana, after his oldest brother was killed in a stabbing Friday night. T’Qarontarion Harris was 32. With both of Sneed’s parents in prison, Harris was largely responsible for raising him as a child. Sneed had played more snaps this season than any other Chiefs defensive player.

“He’s on my mind a lot,” Mathieu said. “Most of us can relate to that, losing people. We just wanted to play well for him today, for his family. I thought we did that. We started the game with a little L’Jarius energy and we kept that going.”

Raiders: CB Trayvon Mullen was helped off the field in the third quarter. He’d been out since Week 4 with a toe injury.

Chiefs: CB Rashad Fenton (knee) was active but did not play in anticipation of a short week before facing the Chargers.

Lady Panthers take 3rd in GB Invitational

MINDEN, La. (AP) — The oldest brother of Kansas City Chiefs cornerback L’Jarius Sneed was killed by a woman in northern Louisiana on Friday night, police said.

T’Qarontarion “TQ” Harrison was stabbed in Minden, KTBS-TV reported. Police Chief Steve Cropper said the 32-year-old “died from a single stab wound to his back, that punctured his lung.” A large kitchen knife was recovered.

Harrison tried to drive himself to a local hospital but crashed his vehicle into the building, according to Cropper. He was transported to another medical center, where he died following an emergency surgery.

Angela Washington, 47, was arrested and charged with second-degree homicide. Authorities didn’t offer a motive, and it wasn’t immediately clear if she had an attorney who could comment on her behalf.

Sneed told The Kansas City Star in a story published last month that he credits Harrison for raising him while his parents were in prison. At 9 years old, Harrison changed diapers, ironed clothes and walked his brothers to school.

The Chiefs added Sneed to their injury report Saturday and said in a tweet that he was questionable for Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders, citing “non-injury related reasons (personal).”

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — It took nearly a decade for Kansas and Missouri to renew the Border War.

It took about 10 minutes for the Jayhawks to turn it into a border rout.

Ochai Agbaji scored 21 points, Christian Braun and Dajuan Harris had 13 apiece, and the eighth-ranked Jayhawks rolled to a 102-65 win over the Tigers on Saturday in the first meeting of the longtime Big 12 rivals as nonconference opponents.

David McCormack added 11 points and Remy Martin 10 for the Jayhawks (8-1), who have won eight of the past nine games in a series that began in 1907 but hadn’t been played since the Tigers departed the Big 12 after the 2012 season.

“Did it feel different walking out there? Absolutely,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “There’s something about Mizzou and a few others on our schedule, only those guys can bring the type of energy that existed today.”

Javon Pickett led sloppy, poor-shooting Missouri (5-5) with 19 points. DaJuan Gordon had 11 and leading scorer Kobe Brown, hounded all afternoon by the Jayhawks’ man-to-man defense, finished with five points and six rebounds.

“I used to watch this game on TV but never really understood it,” Pickett said. “I knew it was a big game, but it was just another game to me when I was younger. It was a great atmosphere, though. Super loud.”

Hundreds of students representing groups of up to 20 each began camping out nearly a week in advance of the game, all angling for the best seat for the renewal of a rivalry that traces its bitter start to the pre-Civil War days.

But while the era of pro-slavery Missouri raiders quarreling with anti-slavery “Jayhawkers” from Kansas is relegated to the history books, the animosity harbored by fans of the Tigers and Jayhawks is still very real — even though the two programs had not played in nearly a decade, since Missouri decided to chase football riches to the SEC.

His stance softened over time, though, and the schools played a 2017 exhibition to raise money for hurricane relief. They later agreed to a six-game series that was delayed a year by the pandemic. But it wasn’t until Saturday, with the winter sun shining through the clerestory windows of Allen Fieldhouse, that they finally took to the floor together.

Dozens of former players showed up to watch, lending the game a feeling of nostalgia.

“There is an unspoken level of pride. They’ve played in these games, watched other teams play in these games,” Agbaji said. “We didn’t say much to them but we just gave each other that kind of look, like, ‘Go take care of business.’”

As usual, the 270th meeting of Kansas and Missouri had a bit of everything.

There were vulgar chants from Kansas students and silencing buckets from Pickett and the Tigers’ Trevon Brazile. There were alley-oop dunks by McCormack, fast-break slams by Braun and a first-half run by Kansas that included a technical foul on Missouri coach Cuonzo Martin, whose first taste of the Border War was a bitter one.

The Tigers had been waiting 3,577 days to avenge their last heartbreaking loss to Kansas.

They sure didn’t put up the same kind of fight Saturday.

The Jayhawks opened with an 11-3 run, pushed their advantage to double digits after about seven minutes, then closed the first half on a 13-2 run, storming up the tunnel and into their locker room with a 49-27 advantage.

“They’re a really good team,” Brown said. “They came out and did what we thought they would do.”

The Jayhawks had no intention of going easy on Missouri in the second half, either.

Agbaji followed his first half-ending 3-pointer with one to start the second, and Harris — a native of Columbia, Missouri — and Remy Martin added two more in quick succession, tipping the lead over 30 after just a few minutes.

Kansas eventually scored on its first nine possessions of the second half before coasting to the finish.

“We haven’t heard that in a long time, that amount of passion in here,” Braun said. “Some of those students camped out for a week to watch this. We had to give them something in return. We had to match their passion and energy.”

Missouri didn’t compose itself well in a hostile environment. Along with Cuonzo Martin’s technical foul, 7-foot-3 center Jordan Wilmore got one for clocking Mitch Lightfoot in the jaw with an elbow midway through the second half.

Kansas scored 22 points off 20 turnovers. It shot 56% from the field and went 14 of 27 from beyond the arc. It won the battle of the boards, second-chance points and fast-break baskets. In other words, it was complete domination.

The Tigers play Utah and the Jayhawks face Stephen F. Austin next Saturday.

MINDEN, La. (AP) — Police say the oldest brother of Kansas City Chiefs cornerback L’Jarius Sneed has been killed by a woman in northern Louisiana. KTBS-TV reports T’Qarontarion “TQ” Harrison was stabbed Friday night in Minden. The 32-year-old tried to drive himself to a local hospital but died following emergency surgery. Angela Washington was charged with second-degree homicide. A large kitchen knife was recovered but authorities didn’t offer a motive. Young is Alabama's fourth Heisman winner, all in the last 13 years, and the first Tide quarterback to take the trophy. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs probably look back wistfully these days to their last game against the Raiders.

It was the only time in about two months their offense looked like normal.

Andy Reid’s high-powered, thrill-a-minute cast of characters that carried the Chiefs to consecutive Super Bowls has been uncharacteristically stuck in neutral this season. The Chiefs have topped 22 points just once since mid-October, and that was in a 41-14 rout of their longtime AFC West rival in Las Vegas last month.

“Every day is different in this league. That’s why you have to prep and focus so much this week,” said Reid, who needs one win to reach 100 in Kansas City. “You have to remember, the other team is playing. You’re not doing it against air. You have to go out and execute and do it every day.”

The Chiefs (8-4) have won five straight to take a one-game lead on the Chargers and a two-game lead on the Broncos and Raiders (6-6) as they seek a sixth straight AFC West crown. But their winning streak has been fueled by their suddenly stingy defense, which has held three of its last four opponents to fewer than 10 points.

“They are all great players and sometimes it just takes a little bit to be, ‘OK, this is what we are going to be good at right now,’” Raiders quarterback Derek Carr said. “From the first half of the year to the second half, are they doing things much different? I mean, you still see the same things. Maybe they are executing a little bit better and things like that, but any time I play these guys I know what I’m in for and it’s going to be a tough match.”

What began as such a promising season for the Raiders is starting to spiral into another forgettable one. Their loss to the Chiefs last month came during a three-game skid, and last week’s loss to Washington made it four in their last five.

Much like the Chiefs, the culprit for the Raiders has been an inconsistent offense.

Unlike the Chiefs, their defense hasn’t been able to bail them out.

“In the games that have either gone down to the wire for us, or certainly the ones we’ve had a chance to win at the end, we started fast,” said Raiders interim coach Rich Bisaccia, whose team has been outscored by 30 points in the first quarter.

“When it goes in your favor that way, you feel like you can keep rolling. When it doesn’t, well, we’ve been 14 down and come back and won a game as well this year. So, either way, we have to keep going. But we’d certainly love to start fast.”

The Chiefs’ defense could be even stingier this week with the return of Rashad Fenton, who is rated among the league’s top cornerbacks by Pro Football Focus. The versatile Fenton missed last week’s game with a knee injury.

The Raiders’ defense also could get a lift if cornerback Trayvon Mullen can play for the first time since a foot injury in Week 4. But Las Vegas will be without tight end Darren Waller, who will miss his second straight game with a knee injury, and could be missing linebacker Denzel Perryman, who is doubtful after hurting his ankle last week.

The Chiefs have done a good job of taking advantage of Raiders safety Johnathan Abram’s coverage issues the past two seasons. Abram was beaten for the game-winning TD pass by Travis Kelce in the second meeting in 2020 and allowed nine catches on nine targets for 127 yards and two TDs in their Week 10 loss this season.

With Waller dealing with injuries the past two weeks, slot receiver Hunter Renfrow has emerged as Derek Carr’s most reliable target. Renfrow has 17 catches for 236 yards, joining Hall of Famer Tim Brown as the only Raiders with at least eight catches and 100 yards in consecutive games in the same season.

“It’s very easy to see the importance of Hunter Renfrow, not only to our offense but to our team,” Bisaccia said. “He’s a mingler, he’s a locker room guy. He’s really matured as far as a leader in his own way. It’s easy to identify him on the field because the ball seems to find him all the time and usually the ball finds good players.”

Kelce is tied for the league lead with 10 dropped passes, and Tyreek Hill already has a career-high seven, with both of Patrick Mahomes’ favorite targets having passes bounce off them for interceptions.

All together, Kansas City has the third most drops in the NFL with 20 — a big reason why its offense has gone haywire.

“It just happens. It’s part of football,” Mahomes said. “Luckily our defense is playing well enough that when they have happened they’ve gotten stops and not let them impact the team.”
