Jenny Nkem Womsi of the Barton Community College women's basketball team has been named the week six KJCCC Division I women's Player of the Week.

Womsi posted a pair of double-double performances on the week helping Barton to a perfect 2-0 week. Bagging 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting and hauling in 10 rebounds, Womsi secured her second straight double-double performance in Barton's victory over Cloud County.

The freshman remained a force on both sides of the ball in Saturday's road win at Pratt posting a career high 16 rebound performance while adding in 15 points behind 66% shooting for the field notching her third straight double-double.

Womsi and the Cougars concluded the fall portion of the schedule Monday evening falling to 20th ranked Butler Community College. The sophomore led Barton securing her fourth straight double-double performance scoring 15 points with 9-of-11 free throw shooting and hauling in five of her game high 13 rebounds on the offensive glass.

The award is the first in Womsi's Cougar career and the team's first weekly award on the season. The Cougars next action is Wednesday, January 5, hosting Seward County Community College in a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have faced their share of challenges this season. The two-time defending AFC champions are peaking at the right time for another playoff push.

Kelce had a career-high 191 receiving yards and scored on a 34-yard pass from Mahomes in overtime as the Chiefs rallied for a 34-28 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday night.

Kelce caught a tying 7-yard touchdown pass with 1:16 left in the fourth quarter, then ended the game with his catch-and-run in overtime. On first-and-10, Kelce pulled in Mahomes’ pass at the 30 and eluded two tackles en route to the end zone, where he was swarmed by teammates.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been part of a walk-off touchdown or anything like that, so to be in that moment, find him underneath and him making such a dynamic play where, I mean, he cut back, ran by people,” said Mahomes, who completed 31 of 47 for a season-high 410 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. “You think he’s old. He can’t run by people. But he’s still running by people. And he got in the end zone.”

The Chiefs were 3-4 at the end of October but have won seven straight to improve to 10-4 and go up by two games in the AFC West.

Kelce had been held to six total receptions the past two games, but he broke out in a big way. He had five of his 10 catches for 142 yards in the fourth quarter and overtime. He also had a 69-yard reception that led to Tyreek Hill’s 1-yard touchdown and a 2-point conversion that tied it at 21.

“Everybody is talking about him losing a step, he looked fast to me,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said after the 32-year-old Kelce had his sixth career game with at least 10 catches. “His endurance down the stretch for an elder statesman — he’s not over the hill — his acceleration is something.”

Mahomes bounced back after a costly fourth-quarter interception led to Austin Ekeler’s touchdown and gave the Chargers a 21-13 advantage. He was 10 of 16 for 197 yards and three TDs after the turnover.

“Obviously it (stinks) in the moment. I mean, I promise you I felt as bad as anyone about that throw and that situation, and knew how bad it looked. But you will get another chance and you better be ready for that moment,” Mahomes said.

Justin Herbert gave the Chargers a 28-21 lead with 2:19 remaining on a 8-yard TD pass to Keenan Allen, but couldn’t make it hold up. It is the second straight season the Chiefs have come to the Chargers’ Hollywood Park home and won in overtime.

“The goal is always to score. We needed to put up points, and we got in the end zone, and that was our mission,” Herbert said. “We would have loved to have been able to run the clock down and not have any time, but this is the NFL, and you have to get in the end zone.”

Los Angeles’ defeat came after a terrifying injury to tight end Donald Parham. The 24-year-old appeared to lose consciousness after slamming his head on the turf in the first quarter. He was helped off on a stretcher and taken to a hospital, where the team said he is in stable condition.

Herbert threw two touchdowns and ran for another score, but the Chargers (8-6) came up empty on three red-zone drives. Herbert completed 22 of 38 passes for 236 yards and an interception.

“I really liked the way we managed the entire game tonight. It didn’t go down for us today, but we gave ourselves an opportunity. We just didn’t finish the game off defensively,” Chargers coach Brandon Staley said.

The Chargers fell behind 10-0 early in the second quarter before scoring on two straight drives to take a 14-10 lead at halftime. Herbert scored on a 1-yard keeper off left end and then connected with Jalen Guyton for a 4-yard TD on the next drive.

The Chiefs benefited off Chargers’ mistakes for their first 10 points. After Los Angeles turned it over on downs, Kansas City went 95 yards in 11 plays, culminating in Michael Burton’s 7-yard run up the middle.

The Chiefs then turned Anthony Hitchens’ interception of Herbert into points on Harrison Butker’s 30-yard field goal.

Hill had 12 receptions for 148 yards and a TD. It is his fourth game this season with at least 11 catches.

Ekeler scored a touchdown for the sixth straight game with a 2-yard run off left end to extend the lead to 21-13 early in the fourth quarter. The TD came after Uchenna Nwosu tipped Mahomes’ screen pass intended for Clyde Edwards-Helaire at the KC 4 and returned it 2 yards.

It is the third time since 1994 a Chargers player has reached the end zone in at least six consecutive games. LaDainian Tomlinson had a seven-game streak in 2004 and Natrone Means had a six-game run in 1994.

The Chargers could have had at least a 20-10 lead at halftime had Staley opted for a field goal instead of going for it on fourth down. Andre Roberts took the opening kickoff 75 yards and Los Angeles drove to the 5 before turning it over on downs on four straight incompletions by Herbert.

The Chargers could have kicked a field goal on the last play of the first half, but Herbert couldn’t connect with Allen on fourth-and-goal from the 1.

Early in the fourth quarter, Los Angeles had second-and-goal, but Ben Niemann recovered Joshua Kelley’s fumble at the 2.

The Chiefs also were not immune to red-zone failures. They were down 14-13 and had fourth-and-goal at the 2 when Mahomes’ pass to Mecole Hardman was incomplete.

He was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he was undergoing further tests and imaging. Parham, in his second year with Los Angeles, got his hands on a 5-yard pass from Justin Herbert in the back of the end zone on fourth-and-goal, but he dropped the ball when the back of his head slammed into the ground. 

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Adrian Martinez is heading from Nebraska to Kansas State. The four-year starting quarterback for the Cornhuskers announced on Twitter he would transfer to K-State. He is immediately eligible to play for the Wildcats. Martinez was a three-time captain at Nebraska but went just 14-25 as the starter. He completed 62% of his passes for more than 2,800 yards with 14 touchdowns and 10 interceptions this past season. Martinez could play two more college seasons because the NCAA granted players an extra year of eligibility during last year’s shortened COVID-19 season.

The revised document will be voted on by the association's full membership in January. Revising the constitution is the first phase in transferring governing power in college sports from the NCAA to its three divisions. A new constitution would allow each division to create unique rules. That would set the stage for a restructuring of Division I, the highest level of college sports with 350 schools.

Fresh off a pair of NJCAAE National Championships on Saturday, the hopes for a third title slipped out the door Sunday for the Barton Community College eSports program as Call of Duty Cold War Gunfight duos&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bartonsports.com/sports/esports/2021-22/bios/hardin_adam_s17b">Adam Hardin</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bartonsports.com/sports/esports/2021-22/bios/castro_kindric_sw12">Kindric Castro</a>&nbsp;fell 4-0 to Navarro College.

Suffering their first blemish of the season, the duo of Hardin and Castro conclude the fall season with an overall mark of 11-1 and an incredible 36-7 maps record. As a team, Barton finishes the fall season with an overall combined record of 75-30.

Game Recap In the opening map, Hardin and Castro recovered from a 0-1 deficit taking the second round but four straight by Navarro had the Cougars facing elimination. Hardin and Castro fought off one elimination round taking the seven pulling to within 5-2 but the Bulldogs took the eighth securing a 1-0 map lead in the best of seven series.

Falling behind 3-1 early in the second map, Hardin and Castro battled back taking the fifth and sixth rounds turning the map into a first to three scenario but Navarro overcame a late Barton comeback taking three of the final four rounds taking a 2-0 match lead winning the second map 6-4.

Looking for some reassurance, Hardin and Castro delivered taking the opening three rounds but once again, Navarro countered with three straight knotting it up at 3-3. Facing another best to three rounds the Cougar duo produced the edge one final time taking the seventh round but again the Bulldogs returned with the final three taking the map 6-4 and boosting a 3-0 match advantage.

Facing a 3-0 deficit after the opening three rounds, the Cougars' pushed back one final time taking the fourth and fifth cutting the deficit to 3-2 however, the Bulldogs surged in the critical stages taking three of the final four claiming the map 6-3 and National Tournament 4-0.

Area KWCA Wrestling Rankings (12/15)

The Barton Community College wrestling team warpped up the pre-Christmas schedule Sunday at the Bob Smith Open held at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays, Kansas.

Four Cougars competed at the event, with Dawson Chavez conducting the lone placing on the day with a sixth place finish.

Barton will have nearly a month layoff before opening up KJCCC play on the road January 11th at Cloud County Community College.

It took Chavez six matches in the 149 division to earn the placing, bouncing back from an opening bout 15-0 tech fall to unattached Willie McDougald in rolling to three consecutive victories before dropping his final two bouts. Chavez began the quest piling up a 17-2 tech fall over Evan Waddington of Nebraska Kearney. The sophomore continued his climb through the backside with a 4:31 pancake over Isaiah Holmes of Pratt Community College. Needing another victory to secure a placing, Chavez delivered a narrow 5-4 decision over John "Beau" Hostler claiming his second victory over a Loper from Nebraska-Kearney. Chavez had his three-match win streak and day eventually end suffering back-to-back falls to Rhett Edmonson of Fort Hays State University in the consolation semifinals and Kayson Kenney of Carl Albert State in the fifth place tilt.

Izaiah Del Valle, Jonah Clarke and Ayston Perez had tough draws matching up with a ranked or four-year opponent in each of their rounds wrestled.

WICHITA (AP) — Four separate players scored in double figures, and the Wichita State Shockers defeated the Alcorn State Braves inside Koch Arena on Tuesday night, 82-63.

The win puts Wichita State to 8-2 this season, 5-1 while they are in their home arena.

Morris Udeze led all scorers in the game with 15 points, followed by Kenny Pohto with 14 and Ricky Council IV with 12. As a team, the Shockers shot 46.3% from the field while holding the Braves to 40.4%.

The defense has been the strong point of the Shockers this season, and it continued Tuesday. The Shockers forced 17 turnovers compared to just 12 they committed. They also outrebounded the Braves 43-30, 19 of those being on the offensive end.

One player who was exceptionally strong defensively was Kenny Pohto. Head Coach Isaac Brown praised his effort in the game.

Kenny Pohto, a freshman, finished the game with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting, and he added eight rebounds and three steals to his stat line as well.

Moving forward, the Wichita State Shockers will host North Texas on Saturday, Dec. 18 at 3 p.m. That game will air on the ESPN family of networks.

Great Bend High School Cross County coach Lyles Lashley has been named 5A  Girls Coach of the Year by the Kansas XC TF Coaches Association. (KCCTFCA)  

The Lady Panthers finished third in this year's 5A state meet and were within seven points of 5A power Mill Valley and five points behind second place St. Thomas Aquinas. 

Great Bend won every meet but two that they participated in while winning the 5A Regional and Western Athletic Conference meet.

With two freshmen, two sophomore's and several other talented underclassmen, the Lady Panthers figure to be in contention for a state title again in 2022.

Lashley has been the head cross country and track &amp; field coach for the past 6 years at Great Bend after coming to the Panther program from Ellinwood. 

While at Ellinwood HS, his teams won 4 State Championships, 5 State Runners up, and 2 3rd place finishes. He was also named Boys KCCTFCA Cross Country Coach of the Year twice, Boys KCA Overall Cross Country Coach of the Year, NFHS Midwest Section Coaches Association CC Coach of the Year, KCCTFCA Girls Track Coach of the Year, and KCCTFCA Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year.  

The Louisiana native is now in his 28th year of coaching at the college and high school level.

The postseason hasn’t been a possibility for the Broncos in mid-December since 2015 when Peyton Manning was hollering “Omaha! Omaha!” at the line of scrimmage instead of bantering with baby brother Eli from the broadcast booth on “Monday Night Football.”

“This is the first time we’ve been in this position this late in the season where we have everything right in front of us,” fourth-year linebacker Bradley Chubb said Monday. “So, it feels different, guys coming in at 10 o’clock, the first lift option we’ve got, trying to get it in, watching the film.

“Everybody’s locked in, man. It’s been fun to see.”

The Broncos haven’t had a winning record in December since 2016, when they finished 9-7 and missed the playoffs following Manning’s retirement a month after winning Super Bowl 50.

That stretched Denver’s skid to four consecutive losing seasons, its longest such stretch since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.

These erratic Broncos know they’ve let a couple of games slip away. They walloped heavyweights such as the Cowboys (9-4) and Chargers (8-5) and whimpered against lesser teams, including the Eagles (6-7) and Raiders (6-7).

“I wish we could have had a better record, you know. It would have been nice to grab one or two more of those losses,” Fangio said. “But we’re playing good football right now overall. We have our issues that we have to get solved like everybody does. But I feel good about our team moving forward to these last four games.”

Up next are the Cincinnati Bengals (7-6), who were installed as an early 1-point underdog, according to FanDuel SportsBook. The showdown with Cincy figures to draw more interest than Sunday’s game against the Lions (1-11-1), where there were 10,005 no-shows.

“Our fans are great. Our stadium’s electric all the time,” Fangio said. “You know, maybe there will be a few less no-shows and it’ll even be a little bit louder.”

The ground game, and OC Pat Shurmur had better stick with it the rest of the way after showing a tendency over the past two years to go away from an effective ground game.

“We had a good commitment to the run game, and we need to have that, especially this time of year,” Fangio said after the Broncos rumbled through the Lions for 184 yards and three touchdowns on 39 carries.

“If you can run it, you can build a lot of things off of it. You know, we had some bootlegs that came open that were critical, play-action passes. So that’s where it needs to start for us.”

WR Jerry Jeudy had a terrific training camp and was expected to make a huge leap from the three touchdowns he scored as a rookie. He got off to a spectacular start in the opener before a high ankle sprain sidelined him for two months. Upon his return, the Broncos’ inability to protect Teddy Bridgewater in the shotgun has hampered the deep pass. Jeudy gets open on crossers, but is averaging just 11.4 yards per catch after averaging 16.5 yards as a rookie. He has 377 yards on 33 receptions and hasn’t reached the end zone yet.

DE Dre’Mont Jones had a career-high three tackles for loss, including a pair of sacks of Jared Goff, in addition to batting down a pass on fourth down. In one incredible series, he sacked Goff for a 9-yard loss on first down and dumped running back Godwin Igwebuike for a 3-yard loss on second down. After Goff completed a 20-yard pass on third-and-22, Jones batted down Goff’s pass on fourth-and-2 from the Lions 33.

Chubb enjoyed watching the feat live and again on tape Monday.

“You see him knock the ball down and it’s like, ‘OK, Dre. Chill, brother, there’s plays out here for everybody,’” Chubb said, chuckling.

RB Mike Boone. After a dazzling Denver debut — 54 yards on four touchdowns — in relief of Williams two weeks ago when Gordon was out with shoulder and hip injuries, Boone ended up on the reserve/COVID-19 list. The free agent pickup tore a calf in camp and has played in just three games this season.

KBCA Basketball Rankings (12/14)

The Kansas Shrine Bowl Board of Directors would like to announce the assistant coaches for the 2022 Kansas Shrine Bowl. The assistant coaches are chosen based on the success of their season, as well as eligibility limitations and coach availability. The coaching staff for the 49th&nbsp;Annual Kansas Shrine Bowl features 14 of the most talented and respected coaches in the state, including former Great Bend Panther and current Hays coach Tony Crough. The 49th&nbsp;Annual Kansas Shrine Bowl will be played at Carnie Smith Stadium, on the campus of Pittsburg State University, on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at 7 p.m.

The 2022 Head Coaches, announced earlier this year, are Basehor-Linwood’s Rod Stallbaumer for the East and Wichita Collegiate’s Troy Black, leading the West. &nbsp;

The Assistant coaches for the East team are&nbsp;Clint Rider (6A – Blue Valley Northwest), Jason Feeback (5A – Spring Hill), Rick Pollard (4A – Piper), Neal Philpot (3A – Girard), Derick Hammes (2A – Rossville) and Jeff Schneider (1A – Jefferson County North). The East coaching staff had a combined record of 66-12 in 2021, including State Championships from Rider and Hammes. The East staff has a combined six Kansas Shrine Bowl coaching appearances, Derick Hammes served as an assistant in 2016 and returned to lead the East in 2017. Rod Stallbaumer is at the helm of the East for the second time, after serving as the Head Coach in 2009 while at Lyndon. Stallbaumer also assisted the East in 2008, 2014, and 2021. The East coaches also include two former players, Derick Hammes (1989 East, Nemaha Valley) and Neal Philpot (2000 West – Norton).

"One of the best things about coaching in the Shrine Bowl is the opportunity to work alongside and learn from a great staff of coaches.&nbsp; I know each personally and I couldn't be more excited to work with them,” said East Head Coach Rod Stallbaumer. “They have been exceptional leaders of their own programs, are men of high character and will do an excellent job leading our East squad this summer!"

The staff also has a combined four Kansas Shrine Bowl coaching appearances. Head Coach Troy Black returns to the Kansas Shrine Bowl sideline after serving as an assistant in 2021 and 1999 and Buhler’s Warner will return after stints in 2009 and 2014. Hays High’s Tony Crough also returns to the Kansas Shrine Bowl after playing for the West in 1999 out of Garden City.

“I am very honored and humbled to be selected to be the West Team Head Coach.&nbsp; This game is not only such a great opportunity for us to play and coach the game we love, but to do it for a much bigger reason and purpose,” said West Head Coach Troy Black. “The relationships with the players, coaches, and support staff and the experience with the Shriners and Shriner kids have been life-changing.&nbsp; I have the utmost respect and admiration for what the Shriners and Shriner Hospital provide for families in our state, and I cannot be more honored to be participating in the 2022 game.”

Former Great Bend coach named Shrine Bowl assistant

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Folks around the NFL have been wondering the past few weeks what the Kansas City Chiefs would look like if they could marry their suddenly stingy defense with their traditionally prolific offense.

The Raiders had the misfortune of finding out Sunday.

The Chiefs’ defense forced five turnovers, their offense turned them into 28 points, and Patrick Mahomes and Co. cruised the rest of the way to a 48-9 victory — the largest margin in 126 games against their old AFL rivals.

It kept the Chiefs (9-4) one game ahead of the Chargers (8-5) heading into their Thursday night showdown in Los Angeles.

“We’re playing a good football team this next week that we’ve already played once this season,” said Mahomes, who threw two touchdown passes against Las Vegas. “We have familiarity with them. We still have to go out and do it. The defense is playing good football right now. Offensively, we’re proving we can drive the length of the field.”

The Chiefs already led 7-0 thanks to Mike Hughes’ fumble return touchdown on the game’s first play when Mahomes led them on an 80-yard touchdown march. He followed with another 80-yard TD drive a few minutes later, then needed to go just 39 yards for a third touchdown in three series, and a 28-0 lead.

The Chiefs finished plus-5 in turnovers. They gained 372 yards while surrendering 290, held Josh Jacobs to 24 yards rushing and sacked Derek Carr four times. They were 9 of 13 on third downs, averaged 6.5 yards per play and punted once.

In short, the defense continued its midseason surge while the offense finally showed up again.

“Listen, I’m proud of the way the guys are playing,” said Andy Reid, who became the third Chiefs coach to win 100 games for the organization. “It doesn’t matter if you’re up or down; you have to keep going. Consistency becomes important.”

Especially given what’s at stake against the Chargers on Thursday night.

Mahomes showed signs of coming out of his midseason funk, throwing his first two TD passes since mid-November. He was 20 of 24 for 258 yards against Las Vegas while scrambling for another 20 in a confidence-boosting performance.

The offensive line has been excellent all season, but it struggled at certain points on Sunday. Mahomes was sacked three times and fill-in right tackle Andrew Wylie continues to get beaten. He’s been starting in place of Mike Remmers, who is on injured reserve, and Lucas Niang, who has been dealing with a rib injury.

Defensive back Hughes caused two fumbles and returned one for a touchdown while leading the Chiefs with nine tackles. He got considerably more playing time because starting cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, whose brother was killed over the weekend, remained with his family in his native Louisiana.

Demarcus Robinson continues to slide down the wide receiver pecking list in Kansas City. He didn’t have a single target while Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, Mecole Hardman all caught passes. So did Josh Gordon, who scored his first touchdown since he was catching passes from Tom Brady in New England a couple years ago.

3 — The Chiefs have held three consecutive opponents to nine points apiece. That ties the second-longest streak of holding teams to fewer than 10 in a single season; the record is five games set in 1968. The Chiefs also have held six straight teams to 17 points or fewer, the longest active streak in the NFL.

Defensive back Rashad Fenton was active after missing time with a knee injury, though the Chiefs elected to hold him out in advance of their crucial game against Los Angeles. Otherwise, they are about as healthy as they’ve been all season.

The Chiefs lost to the Chargers earlier this season, so losing the return game Thursday night not only leave the two teams tied atop the AFC West but also give Los Angeles the tiebreaker with three games remaining.

(AP) — Folks around the NFL have been wondering the past few weeks what the Kansas City Chiefs would look like if they could marry their suddenly stingy defense with their traditionally prolific offense.The Raiders had the misfortune of finding out Sunday.The Chiefs’ defense forced five turnovers, their offense turned them into 28 points, and Patrick Mahomes and Co. cruised the rest of the way to a 48-9 victory — the largest margin in 126 games against their old AFL rivals.It kept the Chiefs (9-4) one game ahead of the Chargers (8-5) heading into their Thursday night showdown in Los Angeles.“We’re playing a good football team this next week that we’ve already played once this season,” said Mahomes, who threw two touchdown passes against Las Vegas. “We have familiarity with them. We still have to go out and do it. The defense is playing good football right now. Offensively, we’re proving we can drive the length of the field.”They did that with aplomb on Sunday.The Chiefs already led 7-0 thanks to Mike Hughes’ fumble return touchdown on the game’s first play when Mahomes led them on an 80-yard touchdown march. He followed with another 80-yard TD drive a few minutes later, then needed to go just 39 yards for a third touchdown in three series, and a 28-0 lead.The Chiefs finished plus-5 in turnovers. They gained 372 yards while surrendering 290, held Josh Jacobs to 24 yards rushing and sacked Derek Carr four times. They were 9 of 13 on third downs, averaged 6.5 yards per play and punted once.In short, the defense continued its midseason surge while the offense finally showed up again.“Listen, I’m proud of the way the guys are playing,” said Andy Reid, who became the third Chiefs coach to win 100 games for the organization. “It doesn’t matter if you’re up or down; you have to keep going. Consistency becomes important.”Especially given what’s at stake against the Chargers on Thursday night.WHAT’S WORKINGMahomes showed signs of coming out of his midseason funk, throwing his first two TD passes since mid-November. He was 20 of 24 for 258 yards against Las Vegas while scrambling for another 20 in a confidence-boosting performance.WHAT NEEDS HELPThe offensive line has been excellent all season, but it struggled at certain points on Sunday. Mahomes was sacked three times and fill-in right tackle Andrew Wylie continues to get beaten. He’s been starting in place of Mike Remmers, who is on injured reserve, and Lucas Niang, who has been dealing with a rib injury.STOCK UPDefensive back Hughes caused two fumbles and returned one for a touchdown while leading the Chiefs with nine tackles. He got considerably more playing time because starting cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, whose brother was killed over the weekend, remained with his family in his native Louisiana.STOCK DOWNDemarcus Robinson continues to slide down the wide receiver pecking list in Kansas City. He didn’t have a single target while Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, Mecole Hardman all caught passes. So did Josh Gordon, who scored his first touchdown since he was catching passes from Tom Brady in New England a couple years ago.KEY NUMBER3 — The Chiefs have held three consecutive opponents to nine points apiece. That ties the second-longest streak of holding teams to fewer than 10 in a single season; the record is five games set in 1968. The Chiefs also have held six straight teams to 17 points or fewer, the longest active streak in the NFL.INJURY REPORTDefensive back Rashad Fenton was active after missing time with a knee injury, though the Chiefs elected to hold him out in advance of their crucial game against Los Angeles. Otherwise, they are about as healthy as they’ve been all season.NEXT STEPSThe Chiefs lost to the Chargers earlier this season, so losing the return game Thursday night not only leave the two teams tied atop the AFC West but also give Los Angeles the tiebreaker with three games remaining.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Highlighted by a first-team designation by the Associated Press, Kansas State sophomore running back Deuce Vaughn has been named to several All-America teams as organizations have begun to release their lists of top college football players for the 2021 season.

Vaughn, who was named a First Team All-American by the Associated Press as an all-purpose player, is the first Wildcat to be named a first-teamer by the AP since Jordy Nelson in 2007. He is the first Wildcat freshman or sophomore to be named an Associated Press First Team All-American since David Allen earned the nod as a punt returner in 1998.

In addition to his designation by the Associated Press, Vaughn has also been named a Second Team All-American by CBS Sports and USA TODAY.

A native of Round Rock, Texas, Vaughn enters the bowl season ranked fifth in the nation in scrimmage yards per game (144.1) as he is one of only two players with 1,000 rushing yards and 400 receiving yards this season. He has totaled 1,258 rushing yards and 471 receiving yards as he is closing in on becoming just the fourth player in Big 12 history and third nationally in the last five years with 1,000 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards in the same season.

Vaughn currently ranks sixth in the nation with 144.1 all-purpose yards this year, while he is third nationally among active players with a 134.1 career mark. He enters K-State's bowl game ranked eighth in school history in single-season rushing yards (1,258), fourth in single-season rushing yards per carry (5.88) and tied for 10th in single-season rushing touchdowns (14).

More organizations will announce their All-America teams throughout the week.

Kansas State, 7-5, takes on LSU, 6-6, in the TaxAct Texas Bowl, which will be played Tuesday, January 4, 2022, inside NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. The game kicks off at 8 p.m., and will be shown nationally on ESPN.

Kyler Murray’s two interceptions led to Los Angeles touchdowns as the Cardinals failed to clinch their first playoff berth since 2015.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Highly touted quarterback Spencer Rattler will try to restart his college career with South Carolina in a major acquisition for Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer. Rattler threw for 28 touchdowns as a redshirt freshman for Oklahoma in 2020 before losing his starting job with the Sooners this season. He tweeted Monday night that he had committed to the Gamecocks. South Carolina went 6-6 this year, its first season under Beamer. The coach spent three years at Oklahoma as an assistant under Lincoln Riley. Rattler was considered a candidate for the Heisman Trophy before the 2021 season began, but Caleb Williams supplanted him as the starter.
