The two teams meet again Thursday in Garden City for a Western

Lady Panters fall in extra's to Garden City 7-5

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pinch-hitter Wilmer Difo delivered the go-ahead single in the seventh inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat Kansas City 2-1 on Tuesday night to end the Royals’ five-game winning streak.

Pittsburgh (12-11) has won three straight games and 11 of of 16 since a 1-6 start, moving back above .500 for the first time since it was 1-0 in the opening week.

Kansas City has lost seven straight games in Pittsburgh since 2009. The Royals arrived from Detroit following their first four-game road series sweep since 1999.

Jacob Stallings singled off Jakob Junis (1-1) leading off the seventh and took third on Kevin Newman’s one-out single with a hit-and-run on.

Difo, a switch-hitter, batted for pitcher Duane Underwood Jr., and right-hander Scott Barlow relieved. Difo looped a single that dropped in front of a sliding Michael A. Taylor in center, just 227 feet from home plate.

Underwood (1-0) won in his second big league decision, his first since last Aug. 17 for the Chicago Cubs against St. Louis.

Pirates starter Tyler Anderson allowed one run and three hits in six innings while striking out five and walking two.

Junis gave up two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings with nine strikeouts and one walk.

Underwood, Sam Howard and Richard Rodríguez combined for three innings of scoreless, one-hit relief. Rodríguez retired the side in order on nine pitches for his fourth save in as many opportunities.

Colin Moran had an RBI single in the first inning, the start of a three-hit game.

Carlos Santana had two of the Royals’ four hits, and neither left the infield. His singled tied the score in the third.

Royals: INF Ryan McBroom was recalled from the alternate training site to provide an extra bat for the bench with the designated hitter rule not in effect in an NL ballpark. RHP Jake Newberry was optioned to the alternate site. ... RHP Mike Shawayrn, who pitched in 14 games for Boston in 2019, was signed to a minor league contract.

Pirates: OF Ka’ai Tom joined the team. He was claimed from Oakland on waivers last week. After being picked from Cleveland in the winter meeting draft of unprotected players, Tom made his major league debut with the Athletics on April 1 and went 1 for 16 (.063) in nine games. INF Rodolfo Castro was optioned to the alternate site.

Royals: C Salvador Pérez was in the lineup a day after being taken out of the game after the top of the sixth inning with a strained right thumb. He was injured while tagging Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera out on a play at home plate in the third inning.

Royals LHP Mike Minor (2-1, 4.64 ERA) is scheduled to pitch against RHP Mitch Keller (1-2, 7.16) on Wednesday night in the finale of the two-game series. ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina has been put on the 10-day injured list with a strained tendon in his right foot. Molina was hurt in a game Friday night against Cincinnati. He sat out Saturday and Sunday, then returned on Monday to catch all nine innings of a 2-1 loss to Philadelphia. The 38-year-old Molina is off to one of the best starts of his career. He is hitting .323 with five home runs and 14 RBIs. Andrew Knizner started Tuesday night’s game against the Phillies. The Cardinals recalled catcher Ali Sanchez from their alternate training facility.

UNDATED (AP) — There were two Big 12 football teams with different coaches this spring when he appeared there would be no coaching turnover in the league. Former Alabama offensive coordinator has completed his first spring at Texas after replacing the fired Tom Herman. Interim head coach Emmett Jones leads Kansas through its spring game Saturday. He led spring drills after Les Miles was dismissed because of allegations from his LSU tenure. Second-year Baylor coach Dave Aranda got to go through his first spring drills after they were canceled last year because of the pandemic.

UNDATED (AP) — Junior running back Kennedy Brooks is back just in time for Oklahoma after opting out last season. The two-time 1,000-yard rusher returns after Rhamondre Stevenson declared for the NFL draft and TJ Pledger transferred to Utah. Brooks is among Big 12 players expected to have impact seasons for their teams in 2021. Baylor has 6-foot-4, 350-pound transfer nose tackle Siaki Ika in the middle of its defensive line. Ika played in 13 games as a true freshman for LSU's national championship team in 2019 when second-year Baylor coach Dave Aranda was his defensive coordinator. 

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia forward Derek Culver has decided to skip his senior season to enter the NBA draft. Culver announced Monday night that he has signed with an agent. Culver was named to the all-Big 12 first team as a junior. He was second on the Mountaineers with a scoring average of 14.3 and led the Big 12 with 9.4 rebounds per game. He had 11 double-doubles this past season. West Virginia’s roster has seen an extensive makeover since the Mountaineers lost to Syracuse in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to finish the season 19-10. Coach Bob Huggins this month announced the signings of three graduate transfers.

UNDATED (AP) — The NCAA Board of Governors has voted to extend the contract of President Mark Emmert by two years through 2025. The announcement Tuesday night comes less than a month after the NCAA and Emmert drew sharp criticism for inequities between the women's and men's Division I basketball tournaments. Emmert has also been facing scrutiny and outside pressure for the NCAA inability to move forward with proposed reforms to its rules prohibiting athletes from earning money from their names, images and likenesses. Emmert has been NCAA president since November 2010.

half and trailed 2-0 at the break. But Hays High pulled away in the
second half with 5 goals to win 7-0 to improve to 9-2 on the season.
The loss dropped Great Bend to 0-10.

Lady Panther soccer stumbles at Hays

DETROIT (AP) — These plucky Kansas City Royals are just full of surprises.

Jarrod Dyson doubled and scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning and the Royals bullpen preserved another lead, holding off the Detroit Tigers 3-2 Monday to complete a four-game sweep on the road for the first time since 1999.

The Royals, who haven’t finished over .500 since winning the 2015 World Series, have won a season-high five straight and own the best record in the American League at 14-7.

“I don’t want to sound arrogant, but we’re expecting good things to happen,” Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said.

Detroit (7-16) has the worst record in the majors after losing 10 of its last 11 games and is off to its worst start since 2003.

“We won’t talk about it in those terms, I can tell you that,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said.

Kansas City starter Brad Keller (2-2) gave up two runs and eight hits over six innings.

“Brad was not feeling it early and he figured out how to grind through it and pitched out of trouble,” Matheny said.

Scott Barlow and Greg Holland followed for the Royals, each throwing a scoreless inning. Josh Staumont pitched the ninth for his second save in as many chances, sealing the team’s first four-game sweep against Detroit since 2005.

The Royals have won 58 straight games — dating to June 21, 2019 — when ahead after the seventh inning for the longest such streak in baseball.

Spencer Turnbull (1-1) gave up three runs on five hits and no walks while striking out five. Detroit relievers combined to throw three innings of scoreless relief, but its hitters failed to take advantage of chances to extend or win the game, leaving 11 runners on base.

“In a close game like that, you want to take advantage of any opportunity,” Hinch said. “We had a lot more opportunities than previous games and that’s encouraging.”

In the third inning, the Royals took a 2-0 lead on Carlos Santana’s fifth homer of the season.

Miguel Cabrera’s RBI in the third ended a 15-inning scoreless stretch for the Tigers and Grayson Greiner’s single in the fourth made it 2-all.

“I’m not into silver linings, but I did like the at-bats better,” Hinch said.

Dyson scored the go-ahead run after doubling, advancing on Nicky Lopez’s bunt and coming home on Whit Merrifield’s sacrifice fly.

The last time Kansas City had a four-game sweep on the road was at the Metrodome, topping the Twins in May 1999.

Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez was taken out of the game after the top of the sixth inning with an injured right thumb after tagging Cabrera out on a play at the plate in the third.

“As he applied the tag, it pushed the thumb back a little bit,” Matheny said. “It’s going to be a day-to-day thing.”

Perez played in his 1,000th game, becoming the 13th Royal and sixth active catcher to reach the milestone.

Detroit INF Renato Núñez, designated for assignment last week, cleared waivers and was outrighted to the team’s alternate site in Toledo, Ohio.

Kansas City has matched its second-best record after 21 games. In franchise history, the 2003 Royals that started 17-4 are the only team to get off to begin better.

“The last few seasons, we’ve never gotten off to a good start,” Keller said. “I truly believe with this team and the fight that we have, we’re really good and we’re sneaking up on a lot of teams and we’re surprising a lot of people.”

Full of surprises: Royals own best AL record, sweep Tigers

The throwing squad from the Barton Community College track and field program competed Saturday at the Tabor College Invite in Hillsboro, Kansas.

The Cougars combined won three of the seven events entered with Ana da Silva winning both the hammer throw and shot put with Fabio Hessling taking the hammer throw on the men's side with a 65.34 toss.

Silva didn't need her personal best efforts in winning the pair of events, marking a 55.76m for the hammer title and 14.43m for the shot put.  Jada Sewell did achieve a personal best on the day in the hammer with a 39.20 to place 13th, to go along with a third place in the shot put at 12.79.  The duo also competed in the discus with Silva placing 3rd at 37.07m as Sewell finished 11th overall with a 32.56m mark.

Four Cougars entered the men's discus with Giovanni Gutierrez leading the entries with a 3rd place personal best throw of 47.94m.  Tyler Nelson place 7th at 44.00m, Hessling in 10th at 42.20, and Fred Moudani's 39.54m throw placing 14th.

Gutierrez also placed 4th in shot put at 15.64m with Nelson grabbing 4th in the javelin on a 44.81m throw.

The Ravens had been expected to trade Brown since late January, when he took to social media to emphatically state that he was a left tackle rather than right tackle, where Baltimore wanted him to play going forward. And while the trade gives the Ravens two first-round picks, they likely will need to use one of them on a replacement on the right side.

The biggest surprise, though, may have been the trade partner. Baltimore essentially sent one of the league’s best players at one of the game’s premier positions to their biggest barricade toward making it back to the Super Bowl.

“There’s been certainly dialogue with various teams and we have a couple things on our radar,” Veach said about four hours before the trade, “but nothing there we’re ready to move on in any direction. But we’re always going to continue to have dialogue with teams and make sure we have all the information, and we can assess whether this move would be a better alternative than staying put and either moving up or moving down.”

The Chiefs have spent the offseason rebuilding an offensive line that was decimated by opt-outs and injuries by the end of last season, when they were dominated up front by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a Super Bowl rout. But most of the work in free agency had been along the interior of the line, leaving both offensive tackle jobs up for grabs.

Those diamonds in the rough selected in the late rounds of NFL drafts or signed as undrafted free agents are more like hidden gems this year.

Fewer schools outside the Football Bowl Subdivision hosted pro days this year, meaning college players from smaller schools with NFL hopes didn’t get the same exposure they would have otherwise from campus workouts in front of scouts.

Only three Football Championship Subdivision schools and one in Division III had pro days scheduled compared with 48 in the FCS and nine in Division II in 2019, the last year with a draft leadup unaffected by COVID-19.

“Every year we’ve had a guy shock us in the 40, a guy shock us in the 225 bench press, shock us in the broad jump. You won’t get to see that this year,” said Scorpio Horn, the Missouri Western defensive coordinator who’s the liaison to the NFL for the Division II school in St. Joseph, Missouri.

“The only guys from small schools that will get that opportunity are the dominant guys that are first-day or next-day guys. Everybody knows who they are. Those guys get an opportunity and the scouts see them, but it’s that one diamond in the rough that we’ll allow to come.”

There were 112 pro days this year, according to NFL.com. That compares with 171 in 2019, 196 in 2018 and 230 in 2017.

For the second straight year, NFL teams cut back on travel for scouts and personnel people as a precaution against COVID-19. With the February scouting combine in Indianapolis canceled, the importance of pro days was heightened, and smaller school players with established profiles were directed to the nearest big school pro days.

Another pandemic-related reason for fewer pro days was that many non-FBS schools that typically host them did not this year because their teams are playing this spring after having their fall seasons postponed.

The only FCS pro days this year were at Central Arkansas, North Dakota State and South Dakota State, according to NFL.com. Only two players worked out at Central Arkansas and SDSU and three at NDSU, down from normal years at all three schools. SDSU and NDSU are playing this spring.

“Is this maybe a year some of those later rounds there are less diamond-in-the rough picks? Potentially,” said Wisconsin-Whitewater tight ends coach and director of operations Tim Shields, a former player agent.

“If you’re choosing between someone at Missouri Western who you were only able to see once versus three of your scouts at Northwestern seeing someone work out, maybe this is the time you take the Northwestern kid because you have a more complete evaluation on the Northwestern kid.”

Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater held a pro day that drew representatives of all 32 teams but only because its Senior Bowl revelation, offensive lineman Quinn Meinerz, warranted a closer look after Whitewater did not play in the fall.

About 230 players lost opportunities for exposure with the cancelation of two all-star games, the East-West Shrine Bowl and NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. The NFLPA and Shrine games attract a bountiful number of third-day draft prospects or undrafted free agents.

Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Tershawn Wharton out of Division II Missouri-Rolla was one of those undrafted free agents who was discovered in the 2020 Shrine game.

“These guys pop off the screen and they make you go back and look at their tape and you’re kind of anxious for their pro day to come and see what they run and jump,” Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said. “That will be the challenge.”

Wharton would have been at Missouri Western’s pro day last year if it had not been canceled, so his invitation to an all-star game proved especially valuable.

Horn said Missouri Western’s pro day traditionally draws 25-30 players from Missouri’s FCS and Division II teams, and almost every year three or four are invited to a rookie minicamp.

“I hope we get it back next year,” Horn said, “and kids can get the opportunity to play at the next level.”

New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman said even though the pandemic caused many pro days to be canceled last year, as it did this year, the task of evaluating 2021 prospects is more difficult.

“Last year, despite the fact the world essentially closed down mid-March, we had already had Indy, we had the all-star games and obviously had a full college season with full normal access,” Gettleman said.

At pro days this year, teams were limited to having three people attend, scouts often had to watch from the stands instead of on the field and face-to-face conversations with players usually weren’t allowed.

Teams adjusted, using videoconferencing to interview prospects, and they worked with schools to mine medical information.

Though some of the better-known players from small schools were able to get into pro days, what about those sleepers who don’t have much of a profile?

One of those was Dennis Gardeck, a linebacker at the University of Sioux Falls in South Dakota in 2017. He won his share of awards at the Division II level, but he was an unknown until his coach got him an invitation to the pro day at South Dakota State.

Gardeck simply dazzled. He had a 4.57-second 40-yard dash and 36.5-inch vertical jump to go with the 31 repetitions he did in the 225-pound bench press. The Arizona Cardinals signed him as an undrafted free agent and he’s played in 44 games the past three seasons. He earned $750,000 last year, when he was second on the team with seven sacks.

“His opportunity came specifically because of what he did at his pro day,” Sioux Falls coach Jon Anderson said. “I feel bad for this year’s guys and even last year’s guys who didn’t get opportunities for pro days. There are probably a lot of guys out there who are diamonds in the rough that have the ability to play that haven’t been given the chance.”

Pandemic making NFL draft’s small school gems harder to find

The Barton Community College softball team closed out its home slate Sunday, sending its sophomores out with a pair of victories over the junior varsity squad of Bethany College 6-5 and 11-1 in five innings.

Barton improves to 15-23 overall, getting back to conference action on Thursday with a 2:00 p.m. first pitch at Pratt Community College.  The Cougars will then complete the regular season on Saturday with a trip to Independence Community College.

The Cougars honored its departing sophomores for the final time on the home turf in-between the pair of games.

Each of the six sophomores contributed to the Cougars' victories. Makayla Chavez connected on three doubles in her five hits, Mackenzie Fagan producing a big hit in game one's bottom of the 7th, Ashlee Lucero striking out a season high twelve batters for the opening victory, Kaylee Milligan's clutch game one tying solo home run, Brooke McCollough driving in three runs including her 5th home run of the season, and Bailie Stanley despite long at-bats in making a lot of contact but coming up empty playing solid defensively at third base.

Royals win 4th straight, blank slumping Tigers 4-0

The Barton Community College women's golf team finished runner-up Saturday in the Region VI Championship played at Hutchinson's Carey Park Golf Course.

The Cougars trailed by just four strokes after Friday's opening round but the two top teams went opposite direction on Saturday. Barton carded a first round 324 but lost seven strokes in the final round with a 331 while Dodge City followed its 320 opener with a solid 307 to tack on twenty-four more strokes for a 59-over 627 winning score over the Cougars' 87-over 655. Fort Scott placed third with 374-376 rounds to finish at 182-over 750.

Paulina Villavicencio and the Conquistadors' Caelyn Cook tied for 6th at 29-over 171, each taking different paths as Villiavicencio made a seven stroke improvement in the final round (89-82) while Cook stayed steady with 86-85 rounds.

Paige Barnes placed 8th at 31-over 173, birdying the par-3 11th hole on Friday from the fringe in shooting an 84 before closing on an 89.

Grabbing the final two spots to qualify for nationals, Pawinee Sukasem and Fort Scott's Marcy McDonald totaled 32-over 174 on the card. Sukasem shaved six strokes from her opening 90 to card an 84 while McDonald strung 88 and 86 scores to earn the Florida trip.

Barton and Dodge City, along with the top ten placers will spend the next few weeks preparing for the NJCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships held May 10-13 at Plantation Bay Golf and Country Club located in Ormond Beach, Florida.

Barton women's golf qualifies five for National tournament

IRVING, Texas (AP) — The College Football Playoff management committee discussed dozens of possible changes to the four-team format during meetings this week while voicing support for the current format, executive director Bill Hancock said Friday.

In a news release, Hancock said the full committee of conference commissioners and Notre Dame’s athletic director heard from four of its members who have been analyzing expansions options.

Hancock said more than 60 possible formats were reviewed, including those with six, eight, 10, 12 and 16 teams.

The working group expects to make a full report on future formats at an upcoming meeting.

“Since January 2019, when the presidents charged us with taking a careful look at all aspects of CFP, including the format, this group has diligently evaluated options for the future,” Hancock said in a statement. “Its efforts were delayed as a result of the pandemic, but it met again this week in Dallas, and we look forward to hearing more when its work is complete.”

The current College Football Playoff contract with ESPN is entering the eighth season of a 12-year deal that runs through the 2025 season.

Cougar men get victory, women lose their match at KCK

The Barton Community College baseball team jumped out to early leads over Pratt Community College in each of Saturday's doubleheader at Stanion Field, earning a pair of run rule victories taking the opener 12-0 before tackling on a 12-2 win to cap the day's sweep.

Earning a 3-1 series victory over the weekend, Barton moves into fifth place in the Jayhawk West standings at 13-11 and improving to 26-15 on the year while Pratt drops back into ninth in the west standings at 5-19 and fall to 10-26 on the season.

Barton will return home to begin the first leg of a four game set against the Broncbusters of Garden City (8-15, 17-21). First-pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Lawson-Biggs Field.

Balanced attack carries Cougars' to Saturday sweep in Pratt

DETROIT (AP) — Brady Singer took the mound in the bottom of the first and struck out the side.

The Kansas City right-hander already looked like he was in a nice rhythm — and the way Detroit’s Matthew Boyd matched him, this turned into a quick afternoon at the ballpark.

Singer pitched seven impressive innings, and the Royals took advantage of some defensive sloppiness by the Tigers in a 2-1 victory Saturday. The game was over in 2 hours, 10 minutes — the shortest nine-inning contest in the major leagues this year — although Singer was apparently too focused to notice.

“I had no idea how quick the game was,” he said.

Willi Castro homered for Detroit in the fifth, but that wasn’t enough to overcome Kansas City’s two runs in the top of that inning. Singer (1-2) allowed three hits and struck out eight.

Scott Barlow worked the eighth, and Josh Staumont pitched a perfect ninth for his first career save.

The shortest previous nine-inning game this season, according to the Stathead tool at Baseball-Reference.com, was actually the previous night, when Minnesota blanked Pittsburgh 2-0 in 2:17.

“You see the pace that was played today,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “Both pitchers had great pace, and that comes with the catchers knowing what to call and having the pitcher in rhythm.”

Boyd (2-2) was on the wrong end of this pitcher’s duel, allowing one earned run and three hits in eight innings. It was the fourth straight quality start for the left-hander.

“We’re better than how we’ve played, and we’re getting it handed to us pretty often right now,” Hinch said. “Our guys are pretty frustrated.”

The Royals did not have a baserunner until Jorge Soler doubled to lead off the fifth. With men on first and third and one out, Andrew Benintendi hit a grounder to first. Jonathan Schoop threw to second for the force, but his throw was a bit high and took away any chance of a double play. Soler scored to make it 1-0.

Michael A. Taylor followed with a single to right, and Victor Reyes threw to third to try to catch Benintendi. The ball bounced past third for an error on Reyes, and Boyd wasn’t in position to back up the throw. The unearned run that came home on that play was ultimately the difference in the game.

“I think it’s just us figuring out ways to win,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “Today it was pressure on the bases, in my opinion caused some things to happen.”

Kansas City went down 1-2-3 in every other inning but the fifth.

Castro’s homer to right came on the Detroit infielder’s 24th birthday.

The Royals took Singer with the 18th pick in the 2018 draft. That was the same year the Tigers selected Casey Mize at No. 1. Mize lost Friday night’s game to Kansas City.

Singer is 3-0 with a 1.44 ERA in four career starts against Detroit.

“He’s done it to us a few times now,” Boyd said. “He’s a good pitcher. Any time you’re able to couple being able to put the ball on the ground, as well as getting strikeouts, that’s why he was a first-rounder a couple years back.”

Royals: RHP Greg Holland was reinstated from the injured list, and RHP Brad Brach was designated for assignment.

Tigers: Announced after the game that DH Miguel Cabrera (left biceps) will be reinstated from the injured list prior to Sunday’s game. The Tigers optioned INF Zack Short to the alternate training site.

Singer sharp, and unearned run lifts Royals over Tigers 2-1

A split squad of the 2nd ranked Barton Community College men's track and field competed Thursday at the Don Kirby Tailwind Open in Albuquerque, New Mexico, hosted by the University of New Mexico.

Taking on numerous four-year, as well as, strong two-year programs in the one-day event, the Cougars posted eight personal bests and won six events among their eleven top-four placings.

The Cougars split their squad this week with the throwers headed to Hillsboro, Kansas, on Saturday for the Tabor College Invite.

Making a splash onto the storied program record book, Ja'Kwan Hale's first attempt at the 400m hurdles was an eye-popping debut. Clocking an altitude adjusted official time of 51.00 seconds, Hale not only posted a nation's leading time but etched his name into the 6th best all-time slot of Cougar history.

Denzel Feagin's personal best of 20.44 for the 200m title led the five Cougar entries with Caleb Boger an eye-blink behind at 20.50 with Karon Dean taking 7th in a personal best 21.56. Almighty Williamson finished in 8th at 21.66 as Ali Moore's personal best 21.86 in 9th place.

Dean and Moore also had personal best clockings in the 100m to place 3rd and 4th respectively with 10.45 and 10.59 times.

Gamali Felix continued his climb towards the 400m program top ten list, winning the event with a personal best 46.31 as Jevon O'Bryant's best of 46.58 placed third.

Tyrese Reid won his second 800m outdoor event as the nation's leader put it in cruise control with a winning 1:53.13 time.

Jump specialist and fellow nation leader Shakwon Coke earned the long jump title with a 7.91m (25-11.50) winning mark.

Barton also won the 4x100m relay as the tandem of Williamson, Feagin, O'Bryant and Boger clocked a 39.86.
