AMES, Iowa (AP) — David McCormack and Dajuan Harris each scored 14 points, and No. 10 Kansas defeated No. 20 Iowa State 70-61 on Tuesday night.

McCormick made all seven of his shots and had 14 rebounds for the Jayhawks (18-3, 7-1 Big 12), who were without Ochai Agbaji. The Big 12′s leading scorer at 20.9 points per game, Agbaji didn’t play due to COVID-19 protocols.

Jalen Wilson scored all 13 of his points in the second half. Christian Braun also finished with 13.

“We learned a lot about our team today,” Braun said. “We learned a lot of guys can step up. Obviously, we lost a big scorer and a great player, but we knew we could get the win.”

Izaiah Brockington led Iowa State (16-6, 3-6) with 24 points.

Kansas again struggled with turnovers against the Cyclones. The Jayhawks committed 16 in a 62-61 win over the Cyclones on Jan. 11. They had 16 in the first 20 minutes on Tuesday.

Despite those struggles, Kansas built a 19-10 lead when Braun made a layup midway through the first half. Iowa State used an 8-0 run to trim the margin to 24-22 but trailed the Jayhawks 30-24 at the break.

“David shot the ball great,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “And Dajuan made some ridiculously hard layups. It was a good team win.”

A Wilson layup pushed the margin to 40-28 early in the second half. A McCormick jumper kept Kansas in control 56-44, with 6:34 remaining.

“I just kind of went into a free mentality, knowing coach put a lot of faith in me and my teammates put a lot of faith in me,” McCormick said. “I just made it an emphasis to dominate the game.”

Kansas shot 56% for the game, while holding Iowa State to 41%.

Kansas remains the only team with one loss in the Big 12 standings. The Jayhawks were hoping to bounce back from Saturday’s 80-62 trouncing by Kentucky. Iowa State was seeking a third straight win after losing four out of five during a midseason slump.

It was emotionally charged arena packed with fans who used to love the coach who took the Red Raiders to the national championship game only three years ago. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Caleb Williams is transferring to Southern California, following his former coach Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma to the Trojans. Williams posted his long-awaited announcement on social media, a video that include the former five-star recruit in a USC uniform and famous Trojans fan Snoop Dogg rapping. Williams started seven games last season for Oklahoma and passed for 1,912 yards and 21 touchdowns. Riley left Oklahoma after the regular season to take the job at USC and when Williams entered the transfer portal in January, it was widely speculated the Trojans would be his choice.

UNDATED (AP) — The transfer portal remains packed as college football’s second signing period arrives. According to Rivals.com, about 48% of the more than 1,250 scholarship players from the Bowl Subdivision who have entered the portal since August had not announced new schools as of last week. The glut of players looking for scholarship offers combined with the seemingly constant movement of athletes and coaches has college sports leaders pondering changes. One possibility under discussion would require players who transfer outside designated periods during the year sit out the next season.

LSU, Florida State, Nebraska and Oklahoma have also had a busy and productive portal season.

NEW YORK (AP) — A contentious 90-minute negotiating session between locked out players and Major League Baseball Tuesday brought little development today. Both sides are behaving as if it is a foregone conclusion that spring training workouts in Arizona and Florida will not start as scheduled on Feb. 16. A session on noneconomic issues is set for tomorrow and there is no date for the resumption of talks on the core matters, such as luxury tax thresholds. Owners are scheduled to meet from Feb. 8-10 in Orlando, Florida, making it less likely there could be negotiations over those days.

BEIJING (AP) — The three-day torch relay for the Beijing Olympics has started with an 80-year-old former speedskater carrying the flame. The relay has been shortened considerably because of concerns about the coronavirus. Luo Zhihuan ran the first leg. He is the country’s first internationally competitive speedskater. The torch will be carried through the three Olympics zones. It starts with downtown Beijing. The Beijing Games have already been impacted on a scale similar to that experienced by Tokyo during last year’s Summer Olympics. China says only selected spectators will be allowed to attend the events.

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State junior center Ayoka Lee has continued to garner accolades for her efforts on the floor this season, as the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced the John R. Wooden Award presented by Wendy's Late Season Top 20 Watch List with Lee as one of the 20 to receive the distinction this evening.

The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the 2022 John R. Wooden Award Women's Player of the Year presented by Wendy's. Players not chosen to the preseason or midseason list are still eligible for the Wooden Award™ National Ballot.

The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award. Voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players when voting opens prior to the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to take into consideration performance during early round games. The Wooden Award All American Team™ will be announced the week of the "Elite Eight" round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2022 John R. Wooden Award will be presented by Wendy's following the NCAA Tournament in April.

For the season, Lee leads the Big 12 and ranks second in the nation in scoring average (25.0 ppg), leads the Big 12 and the nation in total points (526) and leads the nation in field goals made (217). She tops the Big 12 in field goal percentage (.582) and blocks (3.2 bpg). She also leads the Big 12 and ranks fifth in the nation in double-doubles (14). Her 526 points and 217 made field goals are new career single-season highs.

The 2022 Naismith Women's Defensive Player of the Year Watch List member and 2022 Lisa Leslie Award candidate is second in the league in rebounding (10.7 rpg) and seventh in free throw percentage (.767).

Lee is the only player in the nation with 500 or more points, 200 or more rebounds and 60 or more blocked shots.

In league play, Lee leads the Big 12 in scoring (26.8 ppg), field goal percentage (.596) and rebounds (10.2 rpg). She is third in the league in blocked shots (2.2 bpg).

K-State begins the second half of its 2022 Big 12 schedule in Ames, Iowa, as the Wildcats face (13/13) Iowa State on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday's game will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Tom Brady, the most successful quarterback in NFL history, has retired after winning seven Super Bowls and setting numerous passing records in an unprecedented 22-year career.

“This is difficult for me to write, but here it goes: I am not going to make that competitive commitment anymore,” Brady wrote in a lengthy post on Instagram. “I have loved my NFL career, and now it is time to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention.”

Brady has long stated his desire to spend more time with his wife, supermodel Gisele Bundchen, and three children despite still playing at the top of his game.

The 44-year-old Brady goes out after leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl title last season and NFC South championship this season.

News of Brady’s pending retirement leaked Saturday. His family and the Buccaneers denied that he had made a final decision, and he said Monday night on his SiriusXM podcast he wasn’t ready to finalize his plans.

“I’ve done a lot of reflecting the past week and have asked myself difficult questions,” Brady said in his post. “And I am so proud of what we have achieved. My teammates, coaches, fellow competitors, and fans deserve 100% of me, but right now, it’s best I leave the field of play to the next generation of dedicated and committed athletes.”

The transfer portal remains packed as college football’s second signing period arrives, a glut that has the sports’ leaders pondering ways to clean up a roster management mess.

According to Rivals.com, about 48% of the more than 1,250 scholarship players from Division I’s Bowl Subdivision who have entered the portal since August had not announced new schools as of last week.

With the traditional signing period beginning Wednesday, the number of players exiting the portal should continue to rise. But all of those players looking for scholarship offers combined with the seemingly constant movement of athletes — and coaches —- is seen as a problem.

“I’d also suggest we’re still pretty early into this,” Mid-American Conference Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said. “You’ve got other factors involved that are causing additional churn. I still don’t know that we have a clear sense of what this will settle out as. But I understand the angst involved.”

Most schools now lock up the bulk of their high school recruits during the early signing period in December. While there are still some undecided blue-chippers — the most notable free agent, former Oklahoma quarterback Caleb Williams, remained publicly uncommitted — January has become transfer season in college football.

A confluence of recent NCAA rule changes and short-term tweaks made in response to the pandemic have caused an unprecedented traffic jam.

Last year, the NCAA changed its rules to allow athletes in all sports the ability to transfer one time without sitting out a season at their new school. The newfound freedom, a long with the lifting of the NCAA’s longtime restrictions on athletes earning money for use of their names, images and likenesses, has incentivized players to explore their options.

On top of that, hundreds of players have an extra year of eligibility at their disposal after the NCAA provided a giveback for athletes who were in college during the pandemic-altered 2020 season.

The extra year makes building rosters with transfers more desirable for coaches.

Arizona coach Jedd Fisch called bringing in college players with three or more years of eligibility remaining “dream portal” opportunities.

Schools can only have 85 scholarship players at the start of the season, and NCAA rules limit signings to only 25 per season. To help teams compensate for portal losses, the NCAA is allowing them to sign as many as seven additional players this year only — for now. Expect coaches to push for it to become a permanent part of college football.

Another possible alteration to the transfer rules being discussed by athletic administrators at the NCAA committee level is creating windows in the calendar when players could access their one-time, restriction-free transfer.

Athletes would still be permitted to enter the portal at any time, but doing so outside designated periods, possibly at the end of each semester, would require them to sit out the following season.

That might not stem the tide of players diving into the portal, but it would likely trim the number entering midseason.

“They quit the team in November with three weeks, four weeks to go, thinking that by entering the portal (early) they have a better opportunity to go to another institution because they will be the first in the portal,” West Virginia athletic director Shane Lyons said. “Well, that hasn’t played out.”

The future of the early signing period is also up for debate. The three-day period in mid-December was implemented in 2017. That has accelerated the firing and hiring of coaches — which further complicates placing any restrictions on players.

If coaches can be on the move at any time — even with a team still in contention for the College Football Playoff —- why can’t players?

All of this is still so new. Instead of more tweaks, there is some support for stepping back.

Over time, athletes will learn the perils of entering the portal and eventually all those players with an extra year of eligibility will pass through the pipeline.

Signing day becomes transfer season as portal remains packed

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tyrann Mathieu walked off the field in stunned disappointment, his hopes of playing in a third straight Super Bowl dashed by Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals, and spent a moment dressing in a somber Kansas City Chiefs locker room.

The time spent composing himself hardly helped Mathieu keep his emotions in check.

“I think the immature person in me would probably say, you know, we failed,” Mathieu said after a 27-24 overtime loss to the Bengals on Sunday night ended his season and, just maybe, his successful three-year run in Kansas City.

“I think the bigger person in me realizes these things aren’t always possible,” he continued. “We have a lot of motivation. I know there’s a lot of guys in that locker room, they’re going to take this offseason personally to really get better, because we do feel like we’re the best team in the NFL. But the best team doesn’t always win.”

Just the best team on the day. On Sunday, that was Cincinnati.

But despite blowing a 21-3 first-half lead, and an interception by Patrick Mahomes in overtime that allowed the Bengals to set up the winning field goal, the Chiefs still accomplished plenty this season: They won their record sixth straight AFC West title, beat the Bills in the divisional round in one of the greatest finishes ever and became the first team to host four straight AFC title games.

Instead, they turned their attention Monday to an offseason filled with hope, uncertainty and, yes, frustration.

The Chiefs return most of their star players, including Mahomes, wide receiver Tyreek Hill, tight end Travis Kelce and defensive tackle Chris Jones, all of whom are signed to long-term contracts.

But Mathieu is among those players whose deals are set to expire, and the inevitable offseason turnover is sure to create a much different team for next season.

“I’m proud of these guys. You look at the season we had, to be in this game in general — it’s a special group of guys that battled through adversity,” said Mahomes, who helped Chiefs to an about-face after a dismal 3-4 start to the season. “But the guys know the standard is winning the Super Bowl. When you’ve done that, nothing less is success.”

The Chiefs and Mathieu’s representatives tried last offseason to reach an agreement on a contract extension, and both sides hope they can still work something out. But the asking price might have gone up even more given the fact that Mathieu has followed up two All-Pro nods his first two seasons in Kansas City with a third straight Pro Bowl trip.

“I’ve tried to be the right kind of teammate. I’ve tried to play my part and you know, obviously, there’s always a feeling that you can make more plays,” he said, “but I’m hoping it works out.”

Mathieu is but one important defensive piece hitting free agency. Defensive tackle Jarran Reed, cornerbacks Mike Hughes and Charvarius Ward, and defensive end Melvin Ingram are also on the market.

The Chiefs sent their first-round pick and three other selections to the Ravens last year for Orlando Brown Jr., who played well at left tackle this season. And while Brown is also due to hit free agency, it’s unlikely that the Chiefs would let him walk after having spent so much draft capital just to acquire him.

Wide receivers Byron Pringle and Demarcus Robinson also are free agents, and the Josh Gordon experiment was a flop, so Kansas City is in the market for help at that position.

Defensive end Frank Clark has two more years left on his contract, but the his salary cap hit is more than $26 million each of those years, and the Chiefs could save a hefty amount by cutting ties this offseason. They also need to weigh his legal troubles: He was arrested twice last offseason and those issues should sort themselves out this offseason.

“Kansas City is home. I bought a house here. My daughter goes to school here. It’s home,” he said. “I want to be here for the future, the rest of my career. But unfortunately, the way the business goes, things don’t always happen the way you want.”

The biggest problem facing Chiefs general manager Brett Veach last offseason was fixing an offensive line decimated by injuries and dismantled by Tampa Bay in the Super Bowl. He did it with five new faces that played well all season.

There is no such glaring weakness heading into this offseason, though there are smaller holes to fill. Wide receiver is one of them, and so is defensive end, particularly if they allow Clark to leave.

The loss to Cincinnati leaves the Chiefs with the 30th overall pick in the April draft. The question now is whether they will use it. Kansas City has only used its first-round pick once in the past four years, and that was for underwhelming running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, whose history of injuries have him on the brink of becoming a bust.

They also have one pick each in the second, third and fourth rounds, but none in the fifth or the sixth.

Starr connected with 34-year-old Max McGee for two touchdown passes and sent Elijah Pitts and Jim Taylor hurtling into the line for three more. Vince Lombardi’s NFL champs, held to a 14-10 edge in the first half, put a tremendous rush on Len Dawson, the Chiefs’ passer, in the second half and pulled away steadily. Taz Sherman had a career-high 29 points with six 3-pointers to lead the 13-8 Mountaineers, who have their first six-game losing streak since the end of the 2012-13 season. Sherman didn’t play the final 3:42 because of a concussion, coach Bob Huggins said. Jeremy Sochan finished with 13 points and nine rebounds for Baylor.

UNDATED (AP) — Chris Beard has fond memories of his time at Texas Tech. Red Raiders fans feel betrayed by the coach who left Lubbock last year for their most-hated rival. Beard returns Tuesday night with his first visit as head coach of 23rd-ranked Texas, his alma mater. The game has been sold out for more than a month. Texas Tech students were already camped out Saturday, even before the 14th-ranked Red Raiders finished their last game. The teams have identical 16-5 records. Beard was Tech's head coach for five seasons, and led to them to the national championship game three years ago. 

UNDATED (AP) — Auburn remains No. 1 in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll for the second straight week. The Tigers have won 17 straight games. Gonzaga is No. 2 followed by UCLA and Purdue. Kentucky jumped into the top five for the first time in more than two years.  The Wildcats climbed seven spots after winning at Kansas. Houston, Arizona, Baylor, Duke and Kansas round out the top 10. No. 23 Texas re-entered the poll as the week's lone new addition.

The sport’s ninth work stoppage began Dec. 2 after the expiration of a five-year labor contract. Tomorrow's session will be the first on central issues since Jan. 24 and the sides are apart on many economic proposals.

Tuesday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Who Dey!? Not those same ol’ Bungles. Not even close.

Joe Burrow and these young, hungry Cincinnati Bengals are Super Bowl-bound as unexpected and tenacious AFC champions.

Evan McPherson kicked a 31-yard field goal with 9:22 left in overtime after Burrow kept his cool while leading a furious second-half comeback. They got the Bengals to the NFL’s big game for the first time in 33 years with a 27-24 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs for the AFC championship on Sunday.

“It’s a special team that’s capable of doing special things,” said coach Zac Taylor, who was in elementary school the last time the Bengals went to the Super Bowl.

“We’ve said that from the get-go, whether people believed us or not,” he added. “We believed. So we’re not surprised.”

The Bengals erased an 18-point deficit — tying an AFC title game record for largest comeback — to take a late 24-21 lead on McPherson’s 52-yarder.

“I’d say nobody blinked an eye,” the rookie kicker said of the Bengals falling behind big early. “I think we all thought we were going to come back and win the game.”

But Harrison Butker’s 44-yard kick as time expired in regulation sent it to overtime a week after his 49-yarder on the final play of regulation did the same against Buffalo.

And after the Bills’ Josh Allen called tails and it came up heads for the overtime coin toss in that one — giving Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs the ball to seal a wild 42-26 victory — Cincinnati backup quarterback Brandon Allen called heads and the coin came up tails.

The Chiefs opened overtime again with the ball, but Vonn Bell intercepted Mahomes on the third play, and Burrow and the Bengals took over.

And now they’re heading to the Super Bowl for the first time since 1989 after winning their first playoff overtime game.

“Usually when you lose the coin flip to those guys, you’re going home,” said Burrow, the Bengals’ second-year quarterback. “Our defense really stepped up and made plays in the second half. And on offense we made plays when we had to. I thought the offensive line played really well all day. We started running the ball there at the end and that’s exciting.

The Bengals (13-7) will play the Los Angeles Rams (15-5) in the Super Bowl at the Rams’ home stadium on Feb. 13. Cincinnati lost to the 49ers in both of its previous trips to the Super Bowl.

Mahomes and the Chiefs (14-6) will be left to lament blowing a chance at a third straight Super Bowl appearance.

“When you’re up 21-3 at any point in the game, you can’t lose it,” Mahomes said. “I put that on myself.”

The Chiefs had a chance at a winning touchdown in the closing seconds of regulation, but sacks by Sam Hubbard on consecutive plays forced Kansas City to settle for the tying field goal.

“We’re going to the Super Bowl,” Hubbard said. “It sounds crazy to say that.”

The Bengals have won six of their last seven games against the Chiefs, including two this season. But it didn’t look good for Cincinnati early in this one.

The Chiefs got a touchdown on their first three possessions, with Mahomes finding Mecole Hardman for a 3-yard score that made it 21-3 — and had this one looking very much like a rout. Mahomes joined Tom Brady (2014), Joe Flacco (2012) and Aaron Rodgers (2010) as the only players with three games with three or more TD passes in a single postseason.

He tossed a short pass to Samaje Perine, who avoided a tackle attempt by Charvarius Ward and raced into the end zone for a 41-yard touchdown with 1:05 left in the opening half.

The Chiefs appeared headed for their fourth straight touchdown drive to open the game, especially after Byron Pringle’s 10-yard catch put Kansas City at the 15 with 13 seconds left — setting off chants from the fired-up Arrowhead Stadium crowd of “13 seconds!” who were still reveling in the Chiefs’ stunning comeback last week against Buffalo.

A pass interference call on Eli Apple in the end zone put the ball on the 1, but the Chiefs couldn’t get into the end zone on two tries, with Mahomes’ pass to Tyreek Hill losing a yard and ending the half. It ended up costing them.

“I was hoping we could get the ball in the end zone,” coach Andy Reid said. “I probably gave the wrong play, first of all. I could have given them something better than that. I’ll take responsibility for that one.”

McPherson’s 31-yarder cut the Bengals’ deficit to 21-13 with 2:58 left in the third quarter.

Cincinnati got the ball back at the Chiefs 27 moments later when B.J. Hill intercepted Mahomes’ short pass intended for Demarcus Robinson. Two plays after Joe Mixon gained 2 yards on first-and-goal from the 5, Ja’Marr Chase went up over Rashad Fenton in the end zone to catch Burrow’s toss for a touchdown. Burrow then found a wide-open Trent Taylor for the 2-point conversion to tie it at 21 with 14 seconds left in the third quarter.

The 18-point comeback by Cincinnati tied Indianapolis (vs. New England in 2006) for the largest in AFC championship history.

“I wouldn’t call it surreal, I would say it’s exciting,” Burrow said. “I think if you would have told me before the season that we’d be going to the Super Bowl, I probably would have called you crazy. Then, you know, we play the whole season and nothing surprises me now.”

Burrow finished 23 of 38 for 250 yards with the two TDs and an interception. ... Mixon rushed for 88 yards on 21 carries, including 28 yards on the final 42-yard drive. ... Mahomes went 26 of 39 for 275 yards and TDs to Hardman, Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill, and was intercepted twice.

Bengals: TE C.J. Uzomah twisted his left knee in the first quarter and didn’t return. He was on the sideline in the second half using crutches.

Chiefs: Backup TE Noah Gray left with an ankle injury and was ruled out in the second half.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Keion Brooks scored 27 points and Oscar Tshiebwe had a double-double as No. 12 Kentucky manhandled No. 5 Kansas 80-62 on Saturday night.

The Wildcats grabbed a big halftime lead in Allen Fieldhouse and cruised to improve to 24-10 all-time in the series. Kansas had won four of the past five coming in. The last Kentucky win in Allen Fieldhouse was in 1985.

Kentucky coach John Calipari wasn’t interested in discussing history.

“I don’t even know who we played two weeks ago,” he said after the game. “We’ve won a lot of games against ranked teams, all kinds of different ways. I’ve done this a long time and I’ve been in many of these games on the road where it’s (ESPN College) Game Day. I told the team, ‘All the pressure is on the other team. If you play for 40 minutes, watch what happens.’”

Calipari said he’s seen this coming from Brooks.

He rebounded. He defended. He came from the week side and tipped the ball. He made great plays. He did all the other things, and then he made shots.”Tshiebwe had 17 points and 14 rebounds for Kentucky (17-4), which also got 12 points from Kellan Grady and 11 from Jacob Toppin.Kansas coach Bill Self was not surprised by Tshiebwe’s game.“Oscar’s stats don’t show how good he is at rebounding, and his stats show that he’s the best rebounder in the country,” Self said.But Tshiebwe was more interested in talking about Brooks, who was not made available after the game.“I’m so proud of him,” Tshiebwe said. “I want him to keep coming like that every night. We can be a top team if everyone steps up like that. They pay attention too much to me. Now, they forget about him.”Kansas (17-3) was led by Ochai Agbaji, who had 13 points, 10 in the second half. But the two-time reigning Big 12 Player of the Week was held well below his Big 12-leading 21.3 points per game. Christian Braun also had 13 points.Kentucky dominated the boards, owning a 41-29 rebounding edge, including 12-7 on the offensive end.“Their guys got to a level that we couldn’t get to,” Self said. “When you get into a jumping contest with those dudes, we couldn’t compete.”Self kept searching for combinations that would allow his team to get back in the game, but that search turned up empty. Kansas used a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 62-48 early in the second half when Kentucky missed seven straight shots, but the Jayhawks never got any closer.Kentucky used an 8-0 run early to grab the lead and then held Kansas at bay. Kentucky led by 12 at the 10:29 mark, with their points spread among seven different players. More telling, the Wildcats held a 13-4 advantage on the boards.Kentucky shot 61.8% (21 of 34) in the first half, while Kansas was just 13 of 33 (39.4%) and Agbaji was held to just three points.BIG PICTUREKentucky: The Wildcats extended their slim lead in all-time NCAA wins to four (2,344-2,340) over Kansas. These are the two winningest programs in college basketball history. Kansas has gained 15 wins in the last two full seasons.Kansas: A lack of quality big men doomed the Jayhawks.
