The Great Bend Girls took first while the Boys brought home third Saturday at the Panther Invitational in Phillipsburg.

The Lady Panthers won the 19-team tournament with 145.5 points to easily outdistance second place Abilene (136.0) and third place Phillipsburg (90).&nbsp; Bre Ridgeway (132) and Sierra Ferguson (143) both brought home gold medals in their respective weight divisions.

The Panthers Boys were led by first place finishes by Kaden Spragis (120) and Wyatt Weber (138). Weber, ranked first at 138 by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association, was named the tournament's most outstanding wrestler.

Great Bend scored 110.5 points to take third behind first place Hoxie (207.5) and second place Phillipsburg 113.5).

WICHITA, Kan. – Tyson Etienne and Ricky Council each topped 20 points to propel Wichita State past SMU, 72-57, Saturday evening at Charles Koch Arena.

The Shockers (12-8, 3-5) won for the third time in four tries after an 0-4 conference start and handed SMU (16-5, 7-2) just its second loss in the last 74 days.

WSU used an 18-2 first-half run to build a 32-13 lead after 13 minutes of play.

The Shockers led by 16 at halftime and by as many as 21 at the 17:49-mark of the second half.

SMU capitalized on an eight-minute WSU field goal drought to claw within 10 points, 47-37, with 7:10 to play.

Tenuous times for a Shocker team that had squandered double-figure leads in five of its eight losses coming in.

Council helped restore order with 10 points in the final 6:30, capped by a steal and hammer dunk with 47 seconds left.

The second-year guard finished 6-of-9 from the field and 7-for-7 at the foul line to go with seven rebounds and three steals.

Etienne made 6-of-14 from the field, including 4-of-10 from deep, to record his 18th career 20-point game. That's the most by a Shocker since Jason Perez (36 from 1996-00).

Saturday marked the first time since a Mar. 3, 2021 win at Tulane that two Shockers have both topped 20 in the same game. Trey Wade (23) and Dexter Dennis (20) were the heroes that day.

Craig Porter Jr. stuffed the box score with a team-high eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.

WSU shot 41.1 percent from the field, helped by an 8-of-21 performance from three (.381), and knocked down 18-of-20 free throws.

SMU shot 36.5 percent, including 5-of-20 from three, and made 14-of-21 free throws.

The Shockers won the turnover battle 17-12, helped by 10 steals.

Dennis (three steals) led an outstanding defensive effort, limiting SMU point guard Kendric Davis to a season-low eight points on 1-of-7 shooting. Davis had entered the night averaging a league-best 20.1 points with 18-consecutive double-figure scoring games.

Marcus Weathers led the Mustang scoring and rebounding with 14 and eight respectively.

WSU won its fifth-straight against SMU and now leads the all-time series 9-6.

The teams met for the first time in nearly two years. A combination of COVID-19 and weather led to six-straight postponements forced six-straight postponements (four last year and two this year). A makeup date for WSU's twice-postponed road game at SMU is still pending.

WSU will look to continue its momentum Tuesday when it travels to Orlando to take on UCF. The 8 p.m. CT tipoff airs nationally on ESPNU.

Shockers Start Fast, Roll over SMU

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Nijel Pack scored 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting, Mark Smith had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Kansas State beat TCU 75-63 on Saturday night.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Christian Braun and Ochai Agbaji each scored 18 points and No. 10 Kansas bolted to a big lead and routed No. 8 Baylor 83-59 Saturday to hold the top spot in the Big 12 Conference race.

The Jayhawks (19-3, 8-1) led by as many as 34 points late in the game. This was the first time Kansas had hosted a defending national champion since Dec. 15, 2018, when it beat Villanova 74-71 at Allen Fieldhouse.

“I thought we played pretty solid,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “We rebounded it. Our first-shot defense was good, and our ball-screen defense was excellent. I thought it was a good team outing.”

Baylor (19-4, 7-3) had won nine straight games against Top 10 opponents. But the Bears never got close to extending that streak — after scoring the first basket, they quickly fell behind 12-2 and their deficit kept increasing.

Jalen Wilson scored 15 for Kansas. Braun had 10 rebounds and Agbaji had nine as the Jayhawks grabbed a 46-37 advantage on the boards.

Kansas had lost its previous home game, 80-62 to Kentucky last weekend.

“It was a lot of fun,” Braun said. “We took last Saturday pretty hard. We had to bounce back. We did good job of coming out with more energy than we did last Saturday.”

Adam Flagler had 16 points for Baylor and Kendall Brown added 12.

“Well, that’s not how we envisioned today,” Baylor coach Scott Drew said. “They killed us in transition and second-chance points. We didn’t give our half-court defense a chance.

“It snowballed on us. We haven’t been beaten like that in three or four years. It’s disappointing. It starts with me. You’re not supposed to let things snowball like that as a leader,” he said.

Kansas was ahead 21-7 before the second media timeout, stretched the lead to 20 and led 39-21 at halftime. Baylor never got closer than 16 points after the break.

“The job we did on Flagler in the first half was also good,” Self said. “He got loose in the second half a few times. I thought our defense was probably as good as it’s been all year.”

The Jayhawks reached the 1-and-1 bonus with 16:43 left in the game. An offensive foul on Matthew Mayer, after he appeared to be hacked on his way to the basket, was one of the early fouls and drew a technical foul on Drew.

Baylor: It’s hard to win when you don’t make shots. Baylor shot just 29.6 percent (21 of 71) from the field.

Kansas: The Jayhawks don’t lose back-to-back home games very often. Kansas lost last Saturday at home to Kentucky. The last Kansas team to lose consecutive games at Allen Fieldhouse was in Roy Williams’ first year as head coach, 1988-89.

Kayan Green of the Barton Community College women's track and field team has been named the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference (KJCCC) Week Four Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.

The Cougars' Sunday results at the KJCCC/Region VI Invite at Pittsburg State's Plaster Center resulted in seven additional national qualifying and 13 personal best performances.

Shining amongst the results was Green, running the 1000m for the first time and clocking a 2:57.42 time to win the event by over thirteen seconds. The time also jumped Green to the top of the current NJCAA performances by three seconds while 7th all-time best on the storied program's historical list.

Green also later ran the second leg of the 4x400m relay team helping the Cougars to take over another of the nation's top spot. Teaming with leadoff Naiya Morgan, Lashanna Graham, and Ashantae Harvey, the tandem passed the baton to a 3:46.21 time to better New Mexico Junior College's 3:47.09.

The weekly award is the second for the program of the 2022 indoor season as Kelsie Murrell-Ross won the honor in week two after a launching a nation leading 13.86m (45-05.75) shot put mark, a distance she bettered the following week with a 15.04m (49-04.25) thump in the sand.

Green and the Cougars will next head to Fayetteville, Arkansas, for its next event February 11-12, competing in the Tyson Invitational.

Barton track and field's Green earns week four conference honor

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Green Bay’s proven old pros carried the National Football League to a 35-10 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs of the American League on Sunday in the first Super Bowl under the brilliant direction of Bart Starr. Starr connected with 34-year-old Max McGee for two touchdown passes and sent Elijah Pitts and Jim Taylor hurtling into the line for three more. Vince Lombardi’s NFL champs, held to a 14-10 edge in the first half, put a tremendous rush on Len Dawson, the Chiefs’ passer, in the second half and pulled away steadily. The Packers were two-touchdown favorites going into this first meeting of NFL and AFL champions after the merger of June 1966. The Associated Press is republishing verbatim the story of that game.

The Chiefs threw a scare into the proud Packers with a fine first half in which Dawson hit Curt McClinton for a touchdown and Mike Mercer kicked a 31-yard field goal. But the Packers’ pressure was too much for them to handle in a lopsided first half.

In the final minutes of the game, Lombardi went to Donny Anderson and Jim Grabowski, his million-dollar rookies, as his running backs.

McGee, an 11th-year pro who caught only four passes during the regular season and one more in the NFL title game with Dallas, caught TD tosses from Starr of 37 and 13 yards after he took the place of injured flanker Boyd Dowler.

Starr, who did a magnificent job of calling the right play on third-down situations, was named the winner of a new sports car as the most valuable player in the game.

Taylor hammered his way home from 14 yards for his TD behind the blocking of Fuzzy Thurston and Jerry Kramer. Pitts slashed home from the 5 and again from the 1 to complete the scoring, while Don Chandler added all five extra points.

The big breakthrough for the Packers came in the third period when they still led only 14-10. Willie Wood intercepted a Dawson pass and ran it back 50 yards to the 5-yard line. Pitts then slammed over on the next play.

McGee, a veteran who appeared to be on his way out because he was used sparingly during the season, wound up the leading receiver in the game with seven catches for 138 yards. His first TD catch was a thing of beauty, a one-handed grab to beat Willie Mitchell, the Chiefs’ right cornerback, in the first period.

Starr managed to escape the Kansas City blitz and found McGee free on the 20, and Max ran the ball in to complete a 37-yard play.

Hitting time and again on those difficult third-down situations, Starr completed 16 of 23 passes for 250 yards and the two TDs. He had one intercepted, however, only his fourth of the year. He had thrown 173 consecutive passes without having one picked off before Mitchell grabbed a deep one in the final period.

By an odd coincidence, the final score of 35-10 was exactly the same as in 1950 when the Cleveland Browns from the old All-America Conference upset the Philadelphia Eagles, defending NFL champions. However, this time the shoe was on the other foot, and the old established league managed to cling to its superiority.

Coach Hank Stram’s odd-spaced blocking and his changing defenses appeared to bother the Packers in the first half, although Starr usually was able to find his target with a pass when he needed yardage.

Once the Packers began to apply the big pressure on Dawson, the game broke wide open. Lionel Aldridge and Ron Kostelnik got Dawson for an 8-yard loss in the second period, the only time he was smeared in that half. But in the second half, Henry Jordan, Willie Davis, Kostelnik and the blitzing Lee Roy Caffey dragged him down in key situations.

The Packers were two-touchdown favorites going into this first meeting of NFL and AFL champions after the merger of last June. Although the two leagues will meet every year for a world championship in a Super Bowl, they will continue to go their own ways during the regular season until 1970.

As Green Bay already had won about $8,500 for beating Dallas two weeks ago for the NFL championship, this triumph boosted the postseason earnings for two games to $23,500, an all-time record for a team event. The old high was $12,794 by the winning Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1963 World Series.

Dawson had a fine first half in which he hit with 11 of 15 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown. He was getting fine protection and was escaping the Packers rush by rolling out and throwing on the run. Several times he kept the ball and ran for gains.

Bobby Bell, Kansas City’s left linebacker, did a fine job on defense, leading all the players with seven unassisted tackles. In the final analysis, it was the ability of Starr to hit his spot with passes over and in front of the cornerbacks that enabled Green Bay to roll.

One Packers bomb, a 64-yard pass from Starr to Carroll Dale, was ruled out and the score nullified because a Packers interior lineman had moved a hand before the ball was snapped.

It didn’t hurt too much because Starr took the club in anyhow on Taylor’s 7-yard burst for the second score, breaking a 7-7 tie in the second period.

Otis Taylor, the Chiefs’ long-ball threat, was held to four catches and total gains of 57 yards, and Mike Garrett, the elusive halfback, was limited to 17 yards on six carries. Garrett did add 60 yards on four runbacks and caught three passes for 28 yards.

Jim Taylor, who might have been playing his last game for the Packers because he still had not signed a contract, led the rushers with 53 yards on 16 carries. He was giving it that famous second effort that picks up vital yardage on third-down situations.

The Packers threw Kansas City passers six times for losses of 61 yards. Dawson wound up with 16 completions of 27, and Pete Beathard, who replaced him in the final minutes, hit with only one of five.

Lombardi got most of the ballclub into the game in the final minutes, letting Zeke Bratkowski throw a pass, using Anderson and Grabowski and playing the veteran Red Mack at flanker on offense.

Dowler suffered a recurrence of a shoulder injury he sustained in the game at Dallas and left the game on the third offensive play. McGee more than made up for his absence. The Packers also were without their first-string center, Bill Curry, who suffered a knee injury in the second period and gave way to Ken Bowman.

Fred Arbanas, Chiefs tight end, played despite a shoulder separation he received in the AFL title game at Buffalo. Fred Williamson, a cornerback, was carried off the field in the final period.

“I think Dallas was a better team,” Lombardi said afterward. “Kansas City is a real tough football team, but I don’t think it rates with the top teams in the National League.”

“I don’t think they showed us anything different than we expected,” the Packers’ pilot continued. “I think we weren’t as aggressive as we should have been in the first half — just like in the Dallas game.

“I told them at halftime they had to be a lot more aggressive — to stop grabbing and start tackling. We blitzed more in the second half.”

Lombardi said Wood’s interception was a big play. “It took us down there where we could get in to score,” he said.

The coach also paid tribute to Starr: “He was excellent. He got little recognition when we were doing other things (referring to the Packers’ awesome ground attack of previous years) but he was the same Starr then. He’s always been an integral part of our offense.”

Lombardi said the Chiefs’ defense was “very difficult to run against. I thought their secondary played rather loose. They were daring us to throw the ball.”

Asked about McGee’s seven receptions, Lombardi said: “We had planned to hit our weak side end, regardless who it was. Dale caught some, too, when he was on the weak side.”

“I was surprised at their strength, particularly in the first half,” Starr said.

Wood said he hadn’t been guessing on the interception. “We’ll anticipate on a play like that, not guess. We noticed in the films that they usually go to Arbanas on a third down play. And this is what we were looking for.”

“Green Bay just made those big third down plays,” said Kansas City linebacker E.J. Holub. “We didn’t give the offense the ball enough. We let Green Bay control the ball, and that’s their kind of ballgame.”

Paul Hornung, the Golden Boy of the Green Bay Packers, said Sunday after the Super Bowl game that he hadn’t yet decided on whether he was going to retire.

“I’m going to have the doctor thoroughly check me out,” said Hornung. “I’m going to wait and see how my arm is.”

Friday High School Basketball Schedule (2/4)

The Barton Community College men's bowling team posted its' highest finish of the season with a fifth place finish this past weekend at the Bronco Bash held in Hastings, NE.

Concluding five team games on Saturday and 20 Baker games on Sunday, Barton recorded a weekend total of 7,996 pins while Ottawa University claimed the team title turning in a 8,642 pinfall edging out the 10-team field with Waldorf University finishing runner-up with an 8,490 output. 

Fielding a varsity and junior varsity team, seven different Cougars finished with a game north of the 200-mark. Alec Elskamp led nine other Cougars with a five-game total of 935 earning a 19th place finish in the 84 participant field.

Conner Eastman tallied the top game score for the Cougars with an opening game score of 228 on his way to a 24th overall finish and total of 909. Aiden Cain fell four spots back of Eastman knocking down 884 pins.

Andrew Harden scored the highest placing on the varsity team with a 30th place outing tipping over 878 pins while Dylan Depperschmidt fell two pins and two spots back with an 876 total. Griffin Peterson and Bryce Moore finished 33rd and 36th with scores of 869 and 853 respectfully.

Barton will have one final tune up at this weekend's SWIBC Championships held at the Fire Lake Lanes in Shawnee, OK before traveling to the NJCAA National Championships held March 3rd-5th in Lansing, MI.

Casey Feast sustained her recent success tossing her way onto the All-Tournament team finishing fourth out of the 64-participant field with a five-game score of 924 pins. The freshman rolled two of the Cougars' three 200 games, posting a 227 in game three and a 205 in game four. Feast led seven other Barton entries averaging 184.8 over five games while falling just four pins back of third place and 76 shy of first place Danika Hickey of Ottawa University.

Taylor Cessna rolled the other lone 200-plus round for the Cougars with a fifth game score of 201 on her way to a 14th place finish individually at 828. Ana Stanton had a solid day finishing 30th rolling a four-game total of 702 for a team second best average of 175.5. 

Brecken Philbrick scored a four-game total of 649 with Courtney Kitchen knocking down a 443 in three games tossed and Kylie Lowe adding a 279 over two games.

Ella Adkins rolled a one round score of 149 while Jaden Boden set a new personal best score of 139 in her lone game.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Emily Ryan and Lexi Donarski scored 15 points apiece, Ashley Joens had a double-double and No. 11 Iowa State used a dominant third quarter to defeat No. 25 Kansas State 70-55 on Wednesday night.

The Cyclones scored the last five points of the second quarter to lead 31-25 at the half and outscored the Wildcats 24-8 in the third to go up 55-33.

Iowa was 10 of 14 in the quarter with three 3-pointers while Kansas State was 4 of 19.

Ryan had eight assists, six rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Joens had 11 points and 12 rebounds. Nyamer Diew added 10 points for the Cyclones (19-3, 8-2 Big 12 Conference), off to the second-best start in school history after the 2000-01 team went 20-2.

Bill Fennelly, in his 27th season at Iowa State, picked up his 350th win in Hilton Coliseum.

Brylee Glenn, scoreless in the first half, matched her career high with 19 points for the Wildcats (16-6, 6-4), 17 in the fourth quarter. Ayoka Lee had 12 points on 6-of-16 shooting after she had 38 points in the first meeting, a 73-70 loss. In that game she was 18 of 29 with 11 rebounds, three blocks, two assists and two steals.

Glenn’s first basket, with 1:52 left in the third, made it 47-33 but Ryan hit a jumper, Donarski a three-point play and Joens a 3 in the last 96 seconds.

Ryan, Donarski lead No. 11 Iowa State past No. 25 K-State

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Nijel Pack ran down a long in-bounds pass, then found open space at the top of the key to bury a game-winning 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds left to give Kansas State a hard-fought 71-68 win over Oklahoma State on Wednesday night.

The game was tied four times in the final 6:46 after Mark Smith pulled Kansas State even at 62-62 with a three-point play. Smith tied the game again at 64-64 with a pair of free throws and at 66-66 on a jumper with 2:14 left. Bryce Thompson drew a foul while the Cowboys worked for a go-ahead field goal with 38 seconds remaining, but missed the first free throw and Smith grabbed the rebound. Markquis Nowell’s 3-point attempt rimmed in and out with 12 seconds left, but Pack tied up the rebound and Kansas State retained possession.

Pack hit 4 of 7 3-point attempts and added three steals to lead the Wildcats (11-10, 3-6 Big 12). Smith was 5 of 6 from the line and finished with 19 points and eight rebounds. Nowell added 12 points.

Thompson finished with 22 points to lead Oklahoma State (10-11, 3-6). Rondel Walker added 18 points and Keylan Boone chipped in 13 points off the bench.

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Kansas State, which travels to Fort Worth on Saturday to face TCU.

The Cowboys now have lost four straight and play host to rival Oklahoma on Saturday.
