KBCA Basketball Rankings (2/15)

The 5th ranked Barton Community College women's track and field team added five additional national qualifying performances this past weekend in Fayetteville, Arkansas, competing in the Tyson Invitational held at the University of Arkansas.

In addition to the qualifying performances, Barton posted seven personal or season best results competing as the lone two-year college among the field of twenty four-year school teams, including the No. 1 and No. 4 ranked team with four others ranked within the nation's Top-25, and scattered amounts of professional athletes who have claimed Olympic and World Championship medals.

Headlining the performance was the blistering time recorded by the 4x400m relay team of Ashantae Harvey (55.07 split), Naiya Morgan (55.41), Jayda Dillon (56.10), and Lashanna Graham (55.94). The tandem won their heat three seconds in front of the University of Missouri finishing 7th overall against the tough field. More impressively was their 3:42.52 time to rank 7th best in program history as the nation's leader of baton handlers have over a four second best time than their nearest NJCAA competitors.

Also improving a national standing, Nia Robinson rose to a 1.67m (5-05.75) high jump height for a season best. A three event qualifier adding in the triple and long jump events, Robinson led a trio of Cougars in Friday's long jump in placing 20th with a 5.76m (18-10.75) leap. Joining Robinson as a national qualifier in posting personal bests were Ida Seesay (5.60m (18-04.50) and Brittania Ingram (5.53m (18-01.75)

All three of Barton 400m entries reached national qualifying times led by Harvey's 55.26 in placing 31st. Morgan (56.89) and Graham (57.95) clocked personal best times in punching their national ticket in placing 41st and 44th overall respectively.

The thrower group has already qualified for nationals as Efe Latham placed 8th in the weight throw (14.71m, 48-03.25), with Kelsie Murrell-Ross (14.84m, 48-08.25) and Jada Sewell (13.00m, 42-08.00) placing 5th and 9th respectively in the shot put.

Jayda Dillon continues her improvement seeking a berth in the 200m, clocking a personal best 25.44 as Ashanti Harvey's personal 60m hurdle best of 9.10 came just .01 seconds from reaching qualifying time.

The Cougars now enter post-season action, beginning Saturday, February 19, at the two-day KJCCC/Region VI Indoor Championships held at Pittsburg State University's Robert W. Plaster Center.

Barton now has 12 individuals in 19 events qualified for the NJCAA Indoor Nationals held March 4-5 in a return trip to Pittsburg.

5th ranked Barton women's track claims five more national qualifying spots

Gonzaga keeps finding its way back to the top of the The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll.

The Zags reclaimed the No. 1 ranking Monday for a third stint this season atop the AP Top 25, moving up one spot to swap places with Auburn after the Tigers fell to No. 2 following their first loss since November.

Mark Few’s Bulldogs earned 56 of 60 first-place votes to reach No. 1 for a fifth week this season. Gonzaga (21-2) was the preseason No. 1 after last year’s run to the NCAA championship game for what became its only loss. The Zags spent three weeks at the top before falling out after a loss to Duke, and also spent a week at No. 1 in mid-January before being supplanted by Auburn.

It’s become a regular position for Gonzaga over the past four seasons, one no other team in the country can match.

Going back to 2018-19, Gonzaga has spent at least four weeks at No. 1 each season, including last year’s wire-to-wire hold on the top spot. The Zags have now spent 31 of 72 weeks at No. 1 in the poll over the past four seasons, with Duke (11) and Baylor (10) the closest competitors.

Gonzaga has four players averaging in double figures and three others averaging at least 7.4 points.

“That’s kind of how we play,” leading scorer Drew Timme said after Saturday’s win against Saint Mary’s. “You look at the scoreboard and it’s, ‘Oh, he had 20, he had 20.’ It’s just how we play the game. I think that’s the beauty of this program and what (Few) has built here.”

Bruce Pearl’s Tigers earned the other four first-place votes despite losing in overtime at Arkansa s last week to snap a 19-game winning streak, which saw them spend three weeks at No. 1 in the program’s first stint at the top.

Arizona climbed one spot to No. 3 followed by Kentucky -- which has its highest ranking since spending a week at No. 1 in November 2019 – and Purdue.

Kansas was next at No. 6, followed by reigning national champion Baylor and Providence, which climbed three spots to No. 8 for its highest ranking since spending a week in that same position in January 2016.

Duke and Villanova rounded out the top 10, with the Wildcats making the week’s biggest jump by climbing five spots.

Villanova’s climb came after wins against St. John’s and Seton Hall in the Big East, while No. 17 Southern California rose four spots after wins against Pacific and No. 13 UCLA.

In all, 11 teams moved up from last week’s poll.

Houston had the week’s biggest slide, falling eight spots to No. 14 after losses to SMU and Memphis last week.

No one else took a significant tumble, with Purdue, Duke, No. 11 Texas Tech, No. 18 Ohio State and No. 19 Michigan State all falling two spots.

Nine teams fell from last week’s rankings.

No. 20 Texas and No. 24 Connecticut were the only two teams to hold their positions from last week.

No. 22 Wyoming, No. 23 Arkansas and No. 25 Alabama were the week’s new additions, with the Cowboys from the Mountain West Conference earning their first ranking since spending a week in the 2015 poll and only the program’s second appearance since the 1987-88 season.

The Razorbacks and Crimson Tide have both spent multiple weeks in the poll this season.

Marquette, Saint Mary’s and Xavier fell out from last week’s rankings.

With Arkansas and Alabama returning to the poll, the Southeastern Conference tied the Big Ten for the national lead with five AP Top 25 teams.

The Big 12 had four, followed by the Pac-12 and Big East each having three. The Atlantic Coast, West Coast, American Athletic, Ohio Valley and Mountain West conferences each had one ranked team.

Area High School Basketball Schedule (2/15)

BEIJING (AP) — Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva says she’s happy but worn out after a grueling doping hearing ended with her being allowed to skate at the Beijing Games.

The 15-year-old tells Russian state broadcaster Channel One that the past few days have been very difficult for her. Valieva is the favorite for the gold medal in the women’s competition.

Valieva’s lawyers say she failed a doping test before the Olympics because of contamination from medication her grandfather was taking.

There won’t be a medal ceremony if Valieva finishes in the top three because the International Olympic Committee is concerned she could still be banned over a failed drug test from Dec. 25. That test was not revealed until after she won team gold with the Russian Olympic Committee last week.

— Eileen Gu took home another medal with a second-place finish in the women’s ski slopestyle competition. That means she could still become the first action-sports athlete to capture three medals at the same Winter Games. Gu’s bid for another gold medal was thwarted by Mathilde Gremaud of Switzerland.

— Su Yiming gave host China its second gold medal, matching Eileen Gu with a stunning show in front of fans and winning the country’s first top prize in Olympic snowboarding.

— Anna Gasser of Austria has won her second straight Olympic gold medal in women’s snowboarding big air. The 30-year-old Gasser held off a field with an average age of 21, including slopestyle winner Zoi Sadowski Synnott of New Zealand. Sadowski Synnott took silver Tuesday.

— The defending Olympic champion U.S. men’s curling team beat Switzerland 7-4 and moved within reach of a playoff berth. John Shuster’s team is in fourth place after its fourth win, with remaining matches against the two bottom teams in the standings.

Tuesday Olympic Update

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Ochai Agbaji scored 20 points and No. 6 Kansas saw all five starters score in double figures in a 76-62 victory over Oklahoma State on Monday night.

Kansas, which wore throwback jerseys from the 1921-22 season, the year the Jayhawks won their first Helms Foundation national championship, pulled away late in the first half and never was threatened in the second half.

“It was nice not having to sweat,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “I don’t think we played great, by any stretch, but I thought we were pretty good. We weren’t very good the first 12 minutes.”

Kansas had been struggling to put opponents away recently. With one exception, an 83-59 victory over defending champion Baylor, the Jayhawks had five single-digit wins and two losses in their last eight games.

Joining Agbaji in double figures for Kansas (21-4, 10-2 Big 12) was Christian Braun with 16 points, Dajuan Harris and David McCormack with 12 points each, and Jalen Wilson with 11. McCormack also had 12 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season.

“I thought he was great tonight,” Self said of Agbaji. And the coach said he wasn’t alone.

“We had some individuals who played pretty well,” Self added. “The ball definitely moved well the first 10 or 12 minutes of the second half. That’s about the best we’ve looked offensively in a while.”

Avery Anderson scored 15 points and Bryce Thompson added 11 for Oklahoma State (12-13, 5-8 Big 12). Moussa Cisse pulled down 11 rebounds for the Cowboys.

Carrying a 10-point halftime lead, Kansas scored the first four points of the second half and the lead never dipped to less than double digits the rest of the game. The lead reached 20 points when Braun hit two free throws with 13:36 left in the half. By the midway point of the second half, the lead was 26.

Still, Self has something to use for motivation. The Jayhawks missed 16 of their last 17 shots.

“That wasn’t a good finish at all,” he said. “But I would have taken a 14-point win before the game all day long.”

Harris said Self wasn’t too happy with the finish.

“Coach was really mad because we didn’t close the game out really good,” he said. “We were up 25 or so. We’ve got to a better job at the end. If we do that, keep sharing the ball, playing good defense, we’ll be in good shape.”

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Markquis Nowell scored 14 of his 21 points in the second half, Mark Smith notched his seventh double-double and Kansas State rallied to beat West Virginia 78-73 on Monday night.

Nowell sank 7 of 11 shots from the floor, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range, and had three steals to help the Wildcats (14-11, 6-7 Big 12 Conference) win for the fourth time in five games and end a four-game skid against West Virginia (14-11, 3-9).

Taz Sherman, who entered the game second in the Big 12 with an 18.4 scoring average, had 15 first-half points to guide West Virginia to a 42-35 lead at intermission.

Isaiah Cottrell buried a 3-pointer to begin the second half to stretch the Mountaineers lead to 10. Kansas State battled back and moved ahead 55-54 on a layup by Nijel Pack and a go-ahead free throw by Selton Miguel with 11:26 remaining.

Sherman made two free throws 13 seconds later to put West Virginia up one, but Nowell answered with a layup and then nailed a 3-pointer following a Mountaineers turnover to give K-State a 60-56 lead with 9:46 left. They never trailed again.

Sherman’s jumper with 2:28 left pulled West Virginia within a point, but Ismael Massoud made three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point try and Nowell sank 1 of 2 with 1:02 to go to cap the scoring.

Sherman finished with 23 points to pace West Virginia. Kedrian Johnson scored 15 before fouling out. Cottrell added 13 points.

West Virginia beat Kansas State 71-68 in Morgantown in early January. The Mountaineers have won just 2 of 11 games since.

K-State hits the road to play Oklahoma State on Saturday. West Virginia heads back home to play No. 6 Kansas on Saturday.

This is the Zags' third stint at No. 1 this season. Providence climbed to No. 8 for its highest ranking since January 2016. Wyoming, Arkansas and Alabama were the week's new additions. BEIJING (AP) — Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva and gold medal favorite says she’s happy but worn out after a grueling doping hearing ended with her being allowed to compete at the Beijing Games. The 15-year-old tells Russian state broadcaster Channel One that the past few days have been very difficult for her. Valieva’s lawyers say she failed a doping test before the Olympics because of contamination from medication her grandfather was taking.

Tuesday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

Competing for the first time in two months, the Barton Community College wrestling team came away with three placings including one wild-card national qualifier as the Cougars displayed a 10th place team finish in Saturday's NJCAA South Central District Championships held in Colby, Kansas.

Dawson Chavez earned the lone national qualifying spot benefitting by one of the two wild card berths following his seventh-place finish in the 149 division. Ayston Perez fell just short of a qualifying bid with a seventh-place finish while Jonah Clarke concluded the placings finishing eighth in the 184 division.

Chavez will begin preparation for the NJCAA Championships held March 4-5 at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Opening his day on the tough side of a 4:11 fall to Neosho County's Morgan Potts, Chavez regrouped with a bye and 17-7 major decision over Jamarius Koshko of Labette locking himself into an eighth-place finish or better. The freshman's hopes of an automatic national bid took a slight turn dropping an 11-2 major decision to Kayson Kenney of Carl Albert State in the consolation round of three. Chavez secured his seventh-place finish edging Colby's Eric Cain in a 10-7 decision, but unable to challenge for the national qualifying spot due to a previously loss to sixth place finisher Kenny of Carl Albert State. Chavez obtained his national spot accepting one of two wild cards given out by the participating coaches voting.

Dropping his quarterfinal match to eventual sixth place finisher and No. 4 ranked Micah Lieberman of Labette in a 5-2 decision, Perez would advance to the consolation third round with a bye before dropping a tight 6-5 decision to Babatunde Oroye of Neosho County. Slipping into the seventh-place bout Perez received a forfeit victory over Colby's Jared Volcic however like Chavez unable to challenge for the national qualifying spot due to quarterfinal loss to Lieberman.

Barton Wrestling places three at NJCAA South Central District

BEIJING (AP) — Kamila Valieva is allowed to skate. The Russian teenager and gold medal favorite has been cleared to compete in the women’s figure skating competition at the Winter Olympics despite failing a pre-Games drug test.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport released its ruling less than 12 hours after a hastily arranged hearing, deciding the 15-year-old does not need to be provisionally suspended ahead of a full investigation.

The court gave her a favorable decision in part because she was a minor or “protected person” and was subject to different rules from an adult athlete.

Valieva tested positive for a banned medication after winning the Russian national championship. She helped the Russia Olympic Committee take gold in the team competition before reports surfaced about her failed test.

— Kaillie Humphries has captured a third Olympic gold medal, and her first for the U.S. The former Canadian bobsledder was an easy winner of the inaugural women’s monobob event. It’s the first sliding medal for the U.S. in seven events so far at the Beijing Games. American Elana Meyers Taylor was second. It was the fourth medal of Meyers Taylor’s career, the most won by anyone in USA Bobsled history.

— Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France broke their own ice dance world record while winning the Olympic gold medal that narrowly eluded them four years ago in Pyeongchang. The last figure skaters on the ice for the free dance, Papadakis and Cizeron scored 136.15 points for their performance on Monday. That gave them 226.98 points, beating their previous mark of 226.61 set at the 2019 NHK Trophy in Japan.

— The longtime American ice dance duo of Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue claimed bronze in their final Olympics. Another set of Americans, Madison Chock and Evan Bates, finished just off the podium in fourth place.

— US Slopestyle silver medalist Julia Marino has dropped out of the snowboard big air contest after a fall in practice. The 24-year-old Marino was set to jump 23rd in the 30-snowboarder field during qualifying Monday, just ahead of 2018 gold medalist Anna Gasser of Austria. Team USA snowboarding said in a statement that Marino fell during practice a few days ago and is “prioritizing her health.”

— Canadian forward Melodie Daoust (dah-OO’) has returned to the lineup for the women’s hockey semifinal game against Switzerland. Daoust missed four games after being sidelined with an upper-body injury sustained in the second period of a 12-1 preliminary round-opening win over the Swiss.

Monday Olympic Update

For the second day in a row the Barton Community College baseball team manufactured its' second straight rally in the middle innings picking up a 4-2 victory at Rose State College Saturday afternoon.

Sweeping the two-game set to open the season, the Cougars will look to carry the momentum over in its weekend home opener Saturday and Sunday with the first of the four-game set scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader against Western Nebraska Community College.

Pitchers Hunter Hesseltine and Jordan Ellison held the Raider bats at bay allowing just two runs on five hits and fanning nine while offensively Connor Allen and Dryden Howse each recorded an RBI in the effort.

Barton Baseball rallies in fifth inning for weekend sweep at Rose State

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Their defense laying siege to the Bengals, the Rams needed something — anything — from their slumbering offense.

How about a precise 79-yard drive to the Lombardi Trophy?

It wasn’t a classic march, aided by three successive Bengals penalties and mired by some bad throws. No matter: When Cooper Kupp caught a 1-yard pass from Matthew Stafford with 1:25 remaining, LA’s offense indeed had awakened just in time for a 23-20 Super Bowl victory Sunday.

“That’s hard work, that’s hours together,” Stafford said. “I just thank coach (Sean McVay) for putting it ... ‘Hey, Matthew, you and Coop go get this thing done.’ He kept calling plays for him, kept finding ways to get him the ball. He made unbelievable plays; that’s what he does.”

What Los Angeles did on that drive finally measured up to what its defense was doing most of the night: overwhelming Cincinnati’s blockers, sacking Joe Burrow a Super Bowl record-tying seven times. The pressure, led by Aaron Donald and Von Miller, was nonstop.

“You got to be relentless,” said Donald, who added a crowning achievement to his certain Hall of Fame career. “You want something bad enough you’ve got to go get it. You know it was right in front of us ... all offseason you work, you train, you got camp, you got a long season just for this one game. You know we the last team standing.”

They did so in their home, the $5 billion SoFi Stadium, making the Rams the second consecutive host to win the championship after Tampa Bay became the first a year ago.

“As far as building this stadium,” said Rams owner Stan Kroenke, the man who moved them back from St. Louis in 2016, “I think it turned out all right.”

The winning series, during which game MVP Kupp’s 4-yard touchdown reception was negated by offsetting penalties, ended soon after with the NFL Offensive Player of the Year easily beating Eli Apple in the right corner of the end zone for the winning score.

Kupp had four receptions for 39 yards, and a 7-yard run on fourth-and-1 from the Rams 30 on the championship drive.

Cincinnati (13-8) was penalized the second-fewest times (72) for the fewest yards (620) in the regular season but flags hurt badly — including pass interference on Kupp in the end zone.

“I’ve said it all year, whatever is asked of me whatever my job is gonna be, I just want to execute to the best of my abilities,” said Kupp, who won the triple crown of receiving in 2021, leading in catches, yards and touchdowns. “I trust as the game goes on I’ll have opportunities as well, and I just want to stay ready for those things stay locked in.”

Fittingly, Burrow was under pressure on fourth-and-1 and threw incomplete, setting off a football fiesta this city has not seen since the LA Raiders won the 1983 championship.

A tearful Donald said after the game, “I wanted it so bad. I dreamed this.”

Added McVay, at 36 the youngest Super Bowl-winning head coach: “For the offense to be able to find a way, and then Aaron to be able to finish it off, it’s poetic, man.”

Ten points because of two plays in a span of 22 seconds at the outset of the third quarter put Cincinnati ahead for the first time.

Tee Higgins’ 75-yard score made it 17-13 and was followed one play later by Chidobe Awuzie’s pick. Evan McPherson tied Adam Vinatieri’s postseason record with his 14th field goal, a 38-yarder. The rookie didn’t miss in the postseason.

Higgins beat All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey on the first play of the second half — the receiver clearly tugged Ramsey’s face mask on the play. After Stafford was intercepted on the next play, the Bengals got McPherson’s field goal.

They tried to hold on as all of southwest Ohio held its breath.

“I was disappointed in my performance overall,” said Burrow, the NFL Comeback Player of the Year who was 22 of 33 for 263 yards and a touchdown. That’s going to propel us into next year ... we’re not satisfied with what we did this year.”

Not after the 15-play march in which Kupp also converted a fourth down with his run.

“We wanted to be in attack mode and pressure them as much as possible,” Bengals coach Zac Taylor said. “Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t.”

Kupp even earned the MVP honor despite often being double-teamed after fellow wideout Odell Beckham Jr. — who had a touchdown catch on Los Angeles’ second drive for the game’s first score — went out with a knee injury in the second period. Kupp finished with eight receptions for 92 yards.

One fear for Rams followers was ill-advised throws by Stafford, and he had two. His deep pass moving left was picked in the end zone late in the first half by Jessie Bates III. On his second interception, rookie Ben Skowronek could only deflect it —directly to Awuzie.

Other than Matt Gay’s 41-yard field goal later in the third quarter, it was all defense until the Rams’ decisive drive.

“World champs, baby!” McVay proclaimed.

Energized from the outset, the crowd of 70,048 at the stadium that opened in 2020 roared to introductions of each team by The Rock. Then the Bengals fans, far louder than their Rams counterparts early on, got to rocking when Trey Hendrickson sacked Stafford, leading to a punt.

LA’s defense responded by holding on third and fourth downs with a yard to go at midfield. Ernest Jones knocked down a pass for Ja’Marr Chase to turn over the ball, and the excellent field position set up the first touchdown.

Beckham, who joined the Rams in Week 10 after being exiled from Cleveland, easily beat Mike Hilton on a corner pattern for the 17-yard score. Then Beckham showed off his moonwalk in the end zone.

Kupp’s first touch was a short throw from Stafford he turned into a 20-yard gain when Bates III fanned on a tackle. That would not be the last whiff by the Bengals, and it cost them mightily at the end.

The most intriguing matchup, Offensive Rookie of the Year receiver Chase against All-Pro Ramsey, got real juicy late in the opening quarter. Chase brilliantly tracked Burrow’s throw and made a one-handed grab over Ramsey for a 46-yard gain to the LA 11. The drive went no further and McPherson made a 29-yarder.

Beckham took advantage of two defenders colliding to pick up 35 yards on the next drive, Darrell Henderson got 25 while covered by Hendrickson dropping back — huh? — and Kupp was wide open in the right corner of the end zone for his 11-yard score.

“It just comes down to this team and the way we prepared, they way we loved on each other, trusted each other,” Kupp said.

As has been their wont when behind in the playoffs, though, the Bengals responded with a 75-yard drive capped by the trickery of Joe Mixon. He was so efficient running that the secondary was sucked in when Burrow handed off, and Mixon lobbed a 6-yard TD pass to Higgins.

It remained 13-10 until halftime, with Beckham’s left knee injury most notable; he had to be helped off the field and didn’t return.

Thanks greatly to Kupp, though, the Rams finished it off.

“We always talk about there’s something special about being a part of something bigger than yourself,” McVay said. “These guys play for one another.”

Kupp’s late TD lifts Rams over Bengals 23-20 in Super Bowl

The Barton Community College women's tennis team kicked off their season this past weekend in the Collin College Super Bash picking up a pair of victories after dropping the opener held in Plano, Texas.

The 10th ranked Cougars began Friday's doubleheader in taking on host 8th ranked Collin College. Falling behind 2-1 after doubles Barton was unable to recover in singles action falling 6-3.

In the afternoon match it was all Barton getting the early advantage over Texarkana College taking all three doubles matches to pull out an 8-1 route victory.

Due to cold weather hitting the metro area, the Cougars made quick work in Saturday's lone match, sweeping Eastern Arizona College 9-0.

The Barton women will have two weeks off before hosting their home opener on January 26th against Tabor College while their counterparts the Cougar men kick their season off this weekend at the men's Collin College Super Bash.

In doubles No. 1 Angelina Gnezdilova and Clara Penido swept their matches on Friday knocking down X Collin 8-4 before dispatching Texarkana 8-1. On Saturday the duo capped the perfect weekend with a 8-3 win over Eastern Arizona.

Playing as No. 2 doubles, Azul Barrios and Paula Curci bounced back with a pair of 8-1 and 8-2 victories following an opening day 9-8 loss to Collin.

Also winning two of their three matches was the tandem of Malena Hernandez and Jacie Roth as the No. 3 duo overcame a 8-4 opening weekend defeat fuming back with a default win over Texarkana and 8-1 route over Eastern Arizona.

No. 2 singles Penido capped a perfect start to the season taking care of her trio of matches by scores of 6-1, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-3 in Friday's action while blanking Saturday's opponent 8-0.

Barrios playing at No. 4 in singles carded a 3-0 weekend with an opening 7-6 (3), 6-2 upset win over 47th ranked Margaryta Bugaienko capping her collegiate debut with a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the nightcap. The freshman locked her perfect weekend winning 8-0 over Eastern Arizona's Madison Palmer.

No. 3 Hernandez, No. 5 Curri and No. 6 Roth closed their weekends strong winning their final two matches after falling in their openers to Collin College.

Competing at No.1 singles for the first time in her Barton career Gnezdilova dropped her opening match 6-6 (10) and 7-3 (7) to 26th ranked Larissa Giraldi. Falling in the afternoon match 6-3 and 7-6 (12) to Texarkana, the freshman bounced back with her lone victory Saturday with an 8-2 victory.

Barton goes 2-2 on season opening trip

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Holly Kersgieter and Taiyanna Jackson both had double-doubles to lift the Kansas Jayhawks to a 63-51 win over the Kansas State Wildcats in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown on Saturday night at Allen Fieldhouse.

With the win, Kansas has now won five consecutive Big 12 games for the first time since 2000, while improving to 17-5 on the year and 8-4 in Big 12 play.

Kersgieter, who finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, had a hot start to the game, scoring eight of the first 13 points. The junior went over 1,000 career points when she connected on a three pointer with 4:32 left in the opening quarter. That shot gave Kansas an 11-2 lead.

Kansas State answered and closed the deficit to six by the end of the first quarter. Aniya Thomas scored the final bucket of the quarter for Kansas to give the Jayhawks a 13-7 lead. The Wildcats outscored the Jayhawks 19-11 in the second to take a two-point lead into half, 26-24.

The third quarter, however, was all Kansas. Trailing 32-29, Kansas went on a 16-0 run, to take control of the game. Jackson scored the first six points of the run, with a pair of field goals and two free throws. Zakiyah Franklin, who had a team-high 16 points, finished the run with a driving layup to give the Jayhawks a 13-point lead.

Kansas State closed it to nine at the end of the third and scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to tie the score at 45-all with 6:01 to play. That was when Chandler Prater stepped up and scored eight of the next nine points for Kansas, seizing momentum back for the Jayhawks. KU closed the game on an 18-6 run, holding KSU to two made field goals in the final six minutes.

Kansas outrebounded Kansas State 48-31 in the win. Kersgieter had 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Jackson had 10 points and 12 rebounds. Franklin had six assists and five rebounds to go with her 16 points. Ioanna Chatzileonti and Chandler Prater each had eight points in the win.
