10th ranked Barton Women's tennis opens season

The Barton Community College women's tennis team kicked off their season this past weekend in the Collin College Super Bash picking up a pair of victories after dropping the opener held in Plano, Texas.

The 10th ranked Cougars began Friday's doubleheader in taking on host 8th ranked Collin College. Falling behind 2-1 after doubles Barton was unable to recover in singles action falling 6-3.

In the afternoon match it was all Barton getting the early advantage over Texarkana College taking all three doubles matches to pull out an 8-1 route victory.

Due to cold weather hitting the metro area, the Cougars made quick work in Saturday's lone match, sweeping Eastern Arizona College 9-0.

The Barton women will have two weeks off before hosting their home opener on January 26th against Tabor College while their counterparts the Cougar men kick their season off this weekend at the men's Collin College Super Bash.

In doubles No. 1 Angelina Gnezdilova and Clara Penido swept their matches on Friday knocking down X Collin 8-4 before dispatching Texarkana 8-1. On Saturday the duo capped the perfect weekend with a 8-3 win over Eastern Arizona.

Playing as No. 2 doubles, Azul Barrios and Paula Curci bounced back with a pair of 8-1 and 8-2 victories following an opening day 9-8 loss to Collin.

Also winning two of their three matches was the tandem of Malena Hernandez and Jacie Roth as the No. 3 duo overcame a 8-4 opening weekend defeat fuming back with a default win over Texarkana and 8-1 route over Eastern Arizona.

No. 2 singles Penido capped a perfect start to the season taking care of her trio of matches by scores of 6-1, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-3 in Friday's action while blanking Saturday's opponent 8-0.

Barrios playing at No. 4 in singles carded a 3-0 weekend with an opening 7-6 (3), 6-2 upset win over 47th ranked Margaryta Bugaienko capping her collegiate debut with a 6-0, 6-1 victory in the nightcap. The freshman locked her perfect weekend winning 8-0 over Eastern Arizona's Madison Palmer.

No. 3 Hernandez, No. 5 Curri and No. 6 Roth closed their weekends strong winning their final two matches after falling in their openers to Collin College.

Competing at No.1 singles for the first time in her Barton career Gnezdilova dropped her opening match 6-6 (10) and 7-3 (7) to 26th ranked Larissa Giraldi. Falling in the afternoon match 6-3 and 7-6 (12) to Texarkana, the freshman bounced back with her lone victory Saturday with an 8-2 victory.
