KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs signed linebacker Elijah Lee, who starred in college just down Interstate 70 at Kansas State, and cornerback Luq Barcoo on Tuesday to provide depth at both positions.

Lee was a seventh-round pick of the Vikings in 2017 who spent his first three seasons with San Francisco before spending the past two with Detroit and Cleveland. He appeared in 16 games and had 15 tackles for the Browns last season.

Barcoo was an undrafted free agent who signed with Jacksonville in 2020 after a standout career at San Diego State. He bounced through the Arizona and San Francisco practice squads before he was cut in January.

The Chiefs have been busy in free agency, signing wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and safety Justin Reid, even though they were severely strapped for cash. They have been able to free up space by releasing linebacker Anthony Hitchens and restructuring the contracts of several other players, including defensive end Frank Clark.

(AP) — Providence was trailed by a national narrative entering the NCAA Tournament, that despite earning the Midwest Region’s fourth seed, it had been more lucky than good this season because of an 11-2 record in games decided by five points or less. The Friars used that as fuel as they held off South Dakota State and then blew past Richmond to advance to their first Sweet 16 since 1997. But despite limiting its first two opponents to just 54 points per game, Providence finds itself as an underdog against top seed Kansas.

UNDATED (AP) — The second week of the NCAA Tournament is when the Sweet 16 gets reduced to the Final Four. But those aren’t the only numbers to know heading into this week’s regional semifinals and finals. There is at least one statistic worth remembering about each of the 16 teams remaining in the field. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Nick Castellanos and the Philadelphia Phillies have finalized a $100 million, five-year contract. The All-Star outfielder agreed to the deal last week after the Phillies added slugger Kyle Schwarber. Castellanos batted .309 with 34 homers, 100 RBIs and a .939 OPS last year for the Cincinnati Reds, making his first All-Star team and winning a Silver Slugger Award.

Wednesday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

The Barton Community College men's track and field team opened up the outdoor season this past weekend competing in the Louisiana Classic hosted by the University of Louisiana in Lafayette.

The Cougars won four events over the two-days of competition, placing twelve among the top ten of the field, and punched seven national outdoor championship qualifying performances.

Echoing the women's shot put, Giovanni Gutierrez matched Kelsie Murrell-Ross' achievement in winning the event plus adding his name into the program's fourth best ever throw. Gutierrez beat out twenty-three other competitors in the event with a 18.05m (59-02.75) mark as teammate Brandon Lloyd was second at 16.56m (54-04.00) for 12th best in program history.

Lloyd also landed a program 12th best mark in the discus throw, bettering the twenty-five man field on a 51.48m (168-11) concluding his outdoor debut.

National 400m indoor runner-up Elijah Mosley got his outdoor season started on a high note, easily reaching qualifying standards in clocking a 46.74 to win the event over thirty-five competitors including fellow Cougars Almond Small in 6th (48.86) and Cedric Williams (48.95).

Small helped the Cougars 4x100m relay team to the event title, joined by Daylin Williams, Caleb Boger, and Almond Small in clocking a nation's current second best time of 40.38 seconds. The 4x400m relay team also met national qualifying standards as Boger, Small, Zander Von Stade, and Andrew Ferguson clocked a 3:17.07 in placing 5th.

D. Williams also made a run at the 110m hurdle gold, coming up just short on a second place qualifying 14.08 time as teammate GiAndre Lee recorded a personal best 14.93 to come in 8th. Lee also placed 8th in the longer 400m hurdles, posting a 1:00.77 time.

Barton stays in state for its next meet traveling to Winfield on Saturday for the Jinx Invite.

The 26-year-old Mondesi has been dynamic when he’s been healthy, leading the league with 24 stolen bases during the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season. But he has only played more than 100 games once in six seasons, and he hit just .230 with six homers and 15 steals while limited to 35 games by injuries last season.

Mondesi, who made $2.52 million last year and is eligible for free agency after the 2023 season, spent much of this past offseason working with new trainers in the Dominican Republic in an effort to stay healthy. The culprits last season were his obliques and hamstring, but he’s also had quad and shoulder injuries over the years.

“I changed a lot of things, different trainer — just focused on the things I need to focus on and I feel good right now and see what’s going to happen,” Mondesi said during the first week of spring training in Surprise, Arizona.

“We started with my body,” he explained, “seeing what’s going to work for me or not and go from there. They ask how I feel, what I feel and I just let him know, and we make a program and follow that.”

Mondesi also has played second base and third base during his career, and his move to third could become a permanent one if the Royals break camp with top prospect Bobby Witt Jr. at shortstop. Witt also has played third base in the minors, but it is likely the Royals would try to keep him at his most comfortable position as he begins his big league career.

Together, Mondesi and Witt could give Kansas City one of the best left sides of the infield in the American League.

“Whatever they want me to do, I’m OK. I just want to play and I want to feel good and help the team win,” Mondesi said.

The 28-year-old O’Hearn got a significant bump from the $570,500 he made last season, even though he hit just .225 with nine homers and 29 RBIs in 84 games. He’s a career .215 hitter in 275 games over parts of four seasons.

The Royals still have six arbitration-eligible players left to sign: outfielder Andrew Benintendi, second baseman Nicky Lopez, starter Brad Keller, reliever Scott Barlow, recently acquired pitcher Amir Garrett and backup catcher Cam Gallagher.

Barton's other first place finish came in the 4x100m relay, the tandem of Harvey, Naiya Morgan, Ida Seesay, and Jayda Dillon clocking a 45.99 to edge out the title among the nine team field. 

Challenging for the 800 crown, Kayan Green came up a half of a second short clocking a qualifying 2:15.25 for second place.

Barton women capture three golds and seven national qualifiers

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self has always relied on veteran point guards to run his teams, All-Americans such as Frank Mason III and Devonte’ Graham, or Tyshawn Taylor, who led an unheralded group of Jayhawks to the Final Four in 2012.

Often overlooked prospects, they grow and mature over three or four years in the program.

Remy Martin is the opposite: He is a senior transfer from Arizona State who gave up a starring, high-scoring role for the Sun Devils for the chance to be part of a more complete team with national championship aspirations.

So far, so good. Martin was the catalyst for the Jayhawks through the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament, helping the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region advance to the Sweet 16 against Providence on Friday night. Martin scored 15 points in a blowout of Texas Southern, then poured in 20 to help hold off Creighton on Saturday.

“You know, his attitude the entire year I think is what has gotten him prepared for this moment,” said All-American guard Ochai Agbaji, the Big 12 player of the year. “For him to shine, you know, and for him to go out there and just be Remy — it was really nice to see. And you know, I’m just so proud of him, too.”

That’s because everything could have unraveled earlier this season.

Martin earned a starting role for the opener against Michigan State in the Champions Classic, scoring 15 points in an easy win, and he had 14 against Tarleton State in his first game at Allen Fieldhouse. But the road was rocky from that point right up through February as injuries and a crisis of confidence conspired to derail Martin’s senior season.

He scored 15 against Stephen F. Austin in December and didn’t hit double-figures again the regular season.

Dajuan Harris Jr. eventually took over the starting job, though for all his talent, the pass-first point guard hardly offered the same dynamic backcourt ability Martin brought to the floor. Dring those long days, including a stretch in February in which Martin was unable to play at all, he could have easily given up on his one-year layover in Lawrence.

“I mean, the guys and my family — the group — I have a pretty tightknit group,” Martin said, “so they keep my confidence going, they keep my mental (game) going. So I always felt like, you know, I had something in me.”

Martin’s positive approach was evident on senior night at Allen Fieldhouse, when he scored just two points in seven minutes in an overtime win over Texas. Afterward, he delivered one of the more memorable speeches to the home crowd, thanking Self and his teammates along with all those sitting in the stands for a year to remember.

All his positive karma has finally been rewarded starting with the Big 12 Tournament.

Martin suddenly showed his speed and playmaking ability again while scoring four points in 12 minutes in a quarterfinal win over West Virginia, and his productivity and minutes have only increased from there. He had 10 points in 19 minutes in a semifinal win over TCU, and 12 points in 26 minutes in the championship win over Texas Tech.

He was 6 of 8 from the field in 21 minutes against Texas Southern and 7 of 14 from the floor against Creighton.

“There’s nothing to it. I just keep it simple,” Martin said. “I just go out there and try to give it my all and play. I wasn’t going out there and trying to do anything different. They were giving me shots and I just had to knock it in in the first half.”

Self is the first to acknowledge the Jayhawks are at their best when Martin’s at his best.

After all, it was Self that admitted after a historically embarrassing loss to Southern California in last year’s NCAA tourney that the Jayhawks needed to get faster and more athletic. And there wasn’t time to wait several years for a point guard to develop in his program, so in a departure from the norm, Self lured Martin from the transfer portal.

“We’re a different team with him,” Self said after the tough 79-72 win over Creighton on Saturday. “We have got to have some guys make some shots and he bailed us out, you know, once again.”

And if the Jayhawks need Martin to bail them out against the Friars on Friday night, you can bet he’ll be ready.

“I just like wearing this uniform. I love everything about it,” he said. “I just love playing the game itself. So I’m just happy.”

On Saturday, the Cougars split its matches held at the Shannon Schartz Tennis Courts, winning 9-0 over the 13th ranked Tritons of Iowa Central Community College before falling 4-2 to NCAA Division II 42nd ranked Newman University.

Wrapping up its seven-day, five-match stretch on Sunday, the Cougars protected its home courts with a 6-3 defeat of NCAA Division II Fort Hays State University.

Barton will have until Thursday for its next match, taking on its third Division II opponent in a week by traveling to Emporia State University for a 1:00 p.m. first serve.

In Saturday's matches, the Cougars began the day with a 24-5 combined doubles score followed by a dominating 72-17 game total in singles play. Later in the afternoon against Newman, the Jets outscored Barton 24-9 in doubles action and a much closer 59-39 margin in singles action with each team owning a straight set shutout.

The No. 1 doubles tandem of Angelina Gnezdilova and Clara Penido went 2-1 on the weekend, the lone loss coming on an 8-6 defeat to Newman's Divya Murali and Antonia Ramos as each went undefeated in their three singles matches.

Following a 1-1 Saturday in the No. 2 and No. 3 double pairings, Head Coach Lyle Stickney shuffled the teams on Sunday. The No. 1 stayed intact in defeating FHSU 8-6 with the altered No. 2 of Azul Barrios and Malena Hernandez dominating 8-1 while the No. 3 of Paula Curci and Jacie Roth battled in an eventual 8-5 loss. As the push for the postseason heats up, the Barton Community College eSports squad remains in contention in many different games with four weeks remaining in the regular season.

Conducting weeks of 6-4, 7-4 and 5-5 over the past three weeks, the Cougars squad sits at 34-18 overall with 10 more games on the docket in week six action scheduled to get underway Monday.

Carrying Barton over the past three weeks has been the defending National Champion Rainbow 6 Siege squad, defending Madden 22 National Champion Davon Morris and teammate Chance Costello, National Runner-Up Call of Duty Cold War Gunfight 2v2 players Kindric Castro and Adam Hardin along with NBA2K individuals Anthony Twiggs and Kaleb Lininger posting perfect records.

The five pack of R6 gamers remain perfect on the campaign stretching their perfect matches' streak to 4-0 with a week four victory over Gogebic Community College and fifth week tromping over Marion Military Institute. Fresh off a week five bye and already having a postseason spot secured, the group will return to the keyboards Tuesday night against Louisberg College.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs agreed with defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi on a contract for next season, adding to the continuity on the defensive line that came with restructuring the contract of pass rusher Frank Clark.

6th ranked Barton tennis splits matches in Barton Classic

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas State hired Jerome Tang to be its next basketball coach Monday, entrusting a program that’s had plenty of recent success but fallen on hard times to one of the architects of Baylor’s rise to national prominence.

The Wildcats hired Tang to replace Bruce Weber two days after the top-seeded Bears were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament by North Carolina in overtime. Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor flew to Texas to meet with Tang on Sunday and the two sides finalized a six-year contract that will pay more than $14 million the next morning.

“I am beyond excited to be the next head basketball coach at Kansas State,” Tang said. “Having the opportunity to build on a program with a rich basketball history at a prestigious university is truly a blessing. We look forward to bringing an exciting style of basketball to K-State while helping our student-athletes succeed on the court and in life.”

Tang will be paid $2.1 million in his first season with a $100,000 increase in base salary each of the next five years, making his compensation $2.6 million for the 2027-28 season. His contract is expected to include several incentives, too.

“As we conducted a national search to find our next head coach, we wanted to identify an individual who can lead our program to consistently high levels while maintaining the integrity that our program is known for,” Taylor said. “When we first met with Jerome, he was very impressive, and that continued throughout the duration of our search.”

Tang was part of Scott Drew’s initial staff at Baylor in 2003, when the program was reeling from crippling NCAA penalties that included an inability to play a nonconference schedule. Together the two built a juggernaut in Waco, an unprecedented rise that culminated last season with Baylor beating Gonzaga 86-70 in the national title game.

The Bears also won their first Big 12 title last season — their first championship in any conference in 71 years — and shared the award with Kansas this season before an early exit in the league tournament.

“Coach Tang and I have been together for 19 years, and he’s had opportunities before,” Drew said over the weekend, “but obviously each year those opportunities grow, and deservedly so. He’s done a remarkable job.”

Tang, who previously spent 10 seasons at powerhouse Heritage Christian Academy in Texas, is also known for his recruiting ability. Among those Tang brought to Baylor were Ishmael Wainright, Al Freeman and Johnathan Motley as part of his 2013 class, and Kendall Brown, Langston Love and Jeremy Sochan in last year’s No. 4-ranked recruiting class.

“He’s a terrific coach,” Drew said, “and there’s a big reason why we’ve been successful: Because we have a great staff. And he’s a big part of it. So when he chooses to go, I know he will do a great job — and hopefully we won’t have to play him.”

It appears Drew won’t get his wish in that respect.

Drew’s coaching tree is quickly becoming one of the most impressive in basketball. Matt Driscoll is in his 13th season at North Florida and has been to the NCAA Tournament; Grant McCasland took North Texas to the tourney last year and was thought to be in the running for the Kansas State job; and Paul Mills took Oral Roberts to the Sweet 16 last season.

The Wildcats would welcome that kind of success the way the past few years have gone.

Weber resigned under pressure after three straight losing seasons, capped by a loss to West Virginia on the opening night of the Big 12 Tournament. All the goodwill earned over five NCAA Tournament trips and an Elite Eight was gone amid a 34-58 overall record and 13-41 mark in conference play the past three years.

Yet if nothing else, Weber underscored that it’s possible to win in Manhattan, where there is no fertile recruiting base and the nearest major city — and major airport — is a 2-hour car trip down Interstate 70.

The Wildcats won a share of the Big 12 title in 2013 with a team that Weber largely inherited from Frank Martin, then they did again in 2019 with a team of his own construction. They also have appeared in nine NCAA tournaments since 2008, the year Martin ended a 12-year-long drought by taking Kansas State to the second round.

Martin also had the Wildcats in the Elite Eight in 2010 during four NCAA tourney trips in his five seasons.

Top seeds Gonzaga, Kansas and Arizona are in. So is little Saint Peter’s, the giant killer and only the third No. 15 seed to make it this far in the NCAA Tournament.

And Coach K’s farewell tour continues as he and his Duke Blue Devils made it to the Sweet 16, too.

All eight of the regional semifinal matchups are set after a wild opening weekend that saw seven double-digit seeds win in the first round and four of them move on.

This is the second year in a row a No. 15 seed has captured the imagination of basketball fans.

Last year, it was Oral Roberts, which came within a missed 3-pointer at the buzzer from beating Arkansas and going to the Elite Eight. This time, it’s those lovable Saint Peter’s Peacocks, who knocked off Kentucky and Murray State and don’t have a single player that made the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference first team.

EAST REGION Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia

The Peacocks (21-11) will face No. 3 seed Purdue (29-7), and this group of New Jersey toughs won’t be intimidated by the Boilermakers’ considerable size advantage.

“Everybody keeps saying we can’t do that, we can’t do that, we don’t have this and we don’t have that,” coach Shaheen Holloway said. “We got heart. That’s what matters.”

Two of the college game’s biggest brands, No. 8 North Carolina (26-9) and No. 4 UCLA (27-7), will square off in the other semifinal.

First-year coach Hubert Davis’ Tar Heels are the hottest team in the tournament, having won eight of nine after their rout of Marquette and overtime win over defending champion Baylor. UCLA turned back Akron’s upset bid and rolled past Saint Mary’s.

No. 1 Gonzaga (28-3) plays No. 4 Arkansas (27-8) after overcoming slow starts against Georgia State and Memphis. The Zags had to erase a 12-point deficit early in the second half to get past ninth-seeded Memphis and advance to the Sweet 16 for a seventh straight time.

“From here on out, they’re all tough,” coach Mark Few said.

Arkansas was pushed to the limit by double-digit seeds Vermont and New Mexico State. The Razorbacks struggled offensively in both games but their defense has been nails.

The other West game pits second-seeded Duke (30-6) against No. 3 Texas Tech (27-9). A hard-earned 85-76 win over Tom Izzo and Michigan State sends Mike Krzyzewski west to his record 26th Sweet 16. The Red Raiders, with first-year coach Mark Adams, made it past the second round for the first time since their run to the 2019 national championship game.

AT&amp;T Center, San Antonio Thursday-Saturday

No. 11 Michigan (19-14) will face second-seeded Villanova (28-7) in a rematch of the 2018 national championship game won by the Wildcats. Like Saint Peter’s, the Wolverines are a pretty good story, too.

They underperformed in the regular season, coach Juwan Howard was suspended five games for a postgame dust-up with Ohio State and going one-and-done at the Big Ten Tournament made for a nervous Selection Sunday.

Here they are in a fifth straight Sweet 16 after rallying to beat Colorado State and then revving up in the second half to knock out third-seeded Tennessee.

No. 5 Houston (31-5), despite having been bitten hard by the injury bug this season, just keeps rolling along under Kelvin Sampson and will play Arizona (33-3). It’s the Cougars’ 14th Sweet 16, and third since 2019.

The Wildcats nearly got tripped up on their way to the Sweet 16 in coach Tommy Lloyd’s first season. Thanks to a combined 58 points from Bennedict Mathurin and Christian Koloko in an 85-80 overtime win over ninth-seeded TCU, Arizona will be playing on the tournament’s second weekend for the first time since 2016.

No. 1 seed Kansas (30-6) will face a physical challenge against No. 4 Providence (27-5), which took care of business against South Dakota State and blew out Richmond. Kansas got all it could handle from ninth-seeded Creighton in the second round and is in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2018.

Sweet 16 primer: All eyes on Peacocks after wild 1st weekend

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Lexie Hull ran onto the floor for her final game at Maples Pavilion determined to do everything in her power to ensure her reigning NCAA champion Stanford teammates a trip to another special home court: back in her native Spokane, Washington.

The Cardinal needed every bit of Hull’s energy on both ends following a tough halftime talk and challenge from Hall of Fame coach Tara VanDerveer.

Hull ignited the offense after the break on the way to a career-high 36 points with six 3-pointers to go along with six steals, leading the top-seeded Cardinal past No. 8 Kansas 91-65 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday night.

“I think it’s just I really wanted it,” Hull said, trying to describe her memorable performance. “In the back of my head I was like, ‘All right, I want to play in Spokane, my entire body wants to play in Spokane.’ Just our team we really kept the ball moving, found the hot hand and ran with it the rest of the game.”

The defending champs are riding a 22-game winning streak into the Sweet 16 as they travel to a familiar Pacific Northwest spot where they’ve shined before on the big March stage.

“Lexie put our team on her back and just said, ‘We’re going to Spokane, I’m going to do whatever I need to do,’ and she did,” VanDerveer said.

Cameron Brink added 13 points, 12 rebounds and four assists as Stanford (30-3) used a dominant third quarter to pull away. The Cardinal outscored the Jayhawks 32-15 in the period to turn a 33-31 halftime advantage into a 65-46 lead.

Stanford not only went at 6-foot-6 Kansas center Taiyanna Jackson at every chance but extended the defense out to the perimeter by heating up from 3-point range: The Cardinal were 4 of 10 from deep in the first half then 9 for 16 over the final two quarters.

Jackson wound up with eight points, six rebounds and three more blocks to put her single-season school record at 95. Hannah Jump finished with nine points, all from long range.

Hull shot 14 for 21 and her points are the most by a Stanford player in an NCAA game in 10 years, since Nneka Ogwumike scored 39 against South Carolina in the 2012 Sweet 16. Hull also had six rebounds and three assists to leave a lasting impression in the senior guard’s final collegiate game on campus.

She and twin sister Lacie now head back to eastern Washington to help the Cardinal continue the quest at defending their title. Stanford will face fourth-seeded Maryland on Friday in the Spokane Regional semifinals.

“I’ve said this before but I get mad at their parents because they only had twins instead of triplets,” VanDerveer cracked. “They are so exceptional, students, student-athletes. I’m so lucky. And I’m so excited. I was really excited on the bench for both, especially Lexie how she played — obviously Lacie’s so important, too — to be able to go play at home.”

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — The Red Sox have reportedly agreed to terms with Rockies All-Star shortstop Trevor Story on a six-year, $140 million contract that would bring him to Boston to play second base. The deal gives the Boston a long-term answer at second. The position has been in flux since former AL MVP Dustin Pedroia was first injured in 2017. It also leaves Xander Bogaerts in place at shortstop and gives the team a backup plan on the left side of the infield if Bogaerts opts out of his contract at the end of this season. The deal was first reported by USA Today and confirmed by multiple outlets.

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — Kyle Schwarber and the Philadelphia Phillies have finalized their $79 million, four-year contract. Schwarber gets $19 million this year and $20 million in each of the following three seasons. A 29-year-old slugging outfielder, Schwarber split last season with Washington and Boston. He hit .266 with 32 home runs and had a grand slam for the Red Sox in the AL Championship Series. Schwarber will likely serve as the Phillies’ designated hitter, with time in the outfield and first base as well. Philadelphia also has a pending $100 million, five-year contract with free-agent slugger Nick Castellanos.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — The Minnesota Twins and right-handed reliever Joe Smith have finalized a one-year contract. The move gives Minnesota a veteran arm for a bullpen in need of more depth. Smith pitched in 50 combined games last season for Houston and Seattle. He posted a 4.99 ERA in 39 2/3 innings. The side-arm thrower has pitched for seven major league teams over 15 years with a career 3.09 ERA and a .229 opponent batting average. Twins relievers ranked 20th in baseball last season with a 4.39 ERA.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Bears have signed Indianapolis Colts defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad to a two-year contract and Kansas City Chiefs receiver and kick returner Byron Pringle to a one-year deal. They also re-signed safety DeAndre Houston-Carson to a one-year contract. Muhammad spent the past four seasons in Indianapolis. Pringle goes from a team that went 12-5 and lost to Cincinnati in the AFC championship game after back-to-back Super Bowl appearances to one that is rebuilding.
