Coach K’s final chapter will have a distinctly blue tint.

Two weeks of upsets and underdogs in the books, the Final Four is down to four blue blood programs: Kansas, Duke, North Carolina and Villanova.

Kansas faces Villanova, then it’s Duke-Carolina for the first time in the NCAA Tournament in New Orleans.

This is going to be good, so here’s a quick rundown of the last four teams left standing:

Final Four road: The Jayhawks (32-6) looked vulnerable after consecutive late-season losses, but rounded into form at just the right time. While the other No. 1 seeds dropped off in the NCAA Tournament, the Big 12 champions beat Texas Southern, Creighton and Providence to reach the Elite Eight. Kansas rolled into its 16th Final Four by crushing Miami 76-50 to win the Midwest Region.

Strengths: Ochai Agbaji and Christian Braun can both score in bunches, shoot from the perimeter and beat defenders off the dribble. Remy Martin is an immediate adrenaline boost off the bench.

Weaknesses: The Jayhawks overwhelmed Miami in the paint in the Elite Eight, but have been mediocre in the post at times.

Star: Agbaji. The 6-foot-5 senior is explosive and coming off his best game of the NCAA Tournament, scoring 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting against Miami.

Key contributor: Martin. The Arizona State transfer enters the game like he’s shot off a launching pad, changing the complexion with his quickness and fearlessness.

Final Four road: The Wildcats (30-7) had some shaky stretches earlier in the season, but have won 14 of 15, including the Big East Tournament. Villanova has been its efficient best at both ends in the NCAA Tournament, beating Delaware, Ohio State and Michigan to reach the Elite Eight. The Wildcats smothered Houston in San Antonio, winning 50-44 to reach the Final Four for the third time in six seasons.

Strengths: The buffed-up Wildcats often bully teams around the floor on offense and defense. Villanova also shoots 83% from the free-throw line, on pace to break Harvard’s NCAA record of 82.2% set in 1994.

Weaknesses: The Wildcats were already thin and lost second-leading scorer Justin Moore to a torn Achilles tendon against Houston in the Elite Eight.

Star: Collin Gillespie. The senior guard tore his ACL late last season, but has been a huge reason Villanova is back in the Final Four with his steady leadership and clutch shooting.

Key contributor: Jermaine Samuels. The 6-7 senior plays bigger than his size and is a difference maker at both ends of the court

Final Four road: Coach Mike Krzyzewski’s final of 42 seasons in Durham suffered a few bumps in the road, including a blowout to North Carolina in his final game at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils (32-6) have seemed determined to send Coach K out on top since the NCAA bracket began, blowing out Cal State Fullerton, then grinding out wins over Michigan State, Texas Tech and Arkansas to reach the Final Four for a record 13th time under Krzyzewski.

Strengths: The Blue Devils have multiple scoring options and are No. 1 in KenPom’s offensive efficiency ratings. Krzyzewski has shown the game hasn’t left him behind as he heads for the exit, making key adjustments that propelled Duke to the Final Four.

Weaknesses: Duke has been good on the defensive end lately, but had some rough moments earlier in the season, particularly in the loss to North Carolina. The Blue Devils have good 3-point shooters in A.J. Griffin and Wendell Moore, but have been inconsistent from the arc.

Star: Paolo Banchero. A likely top-3 pick in this year’s NBA draft, the 6-10 freshman is a matchup nightmare for opponents. Banchero has the size to post up smaller players, can shoot from the perimeter and beat defenders off the dribble.

Key contributor: Mark Williams. Duke’s 7-1 sophomore center is a dominating force on the defensive end, blocking and altering shots. He’s also got a good post game and finishes with authority.

Final Four road: The Tar Heels (28-9) got their first season under Hubert Davis off to a shaky start, looking like they’d miss the NCAA Tournament. Davis has since pulled the right strings, leading North Carolina to wins over Marquette, No. 1 seed Baylor and UCLA to reach the Elite Eight. The Tar Heels ensured a blue blood Final Four by crushing upstart Saint Peter’s 69-49.

Strengths: Armando Bacot is one of the best big men in the country, freshman Caleb Love is a dynamic scorer and R.J. Davis a steady floor leader who also can score in bunches.

Weaknesses: Davis’ rotation doesn’t go much beyond the starting five, which nearly cost the Tar Heels against Baylor. North Carolina has been better defensively late in the season, but had some real clunkers on that end earlier.

Star: Bacot. North Carolina’s big man can be dominating, as he was with 20 points and 22 rebounds against Saint Peter’s.

A trip to northwest Kansas helped provide some much needed taste of success for the Barton Community College softball team as the Cougars swept Saturday's doubleheader at Northwest Kansas Technical College.

Ending both games in five inning run rule fashion, a six-pack final frame clinched a 10-0 shutout to snap the Cougars' six game losing streak before putting runs on the board in all but one inning of the nightcap's 15-6 victory.

Coming off losses to three opponents on the national watch, No. 6 Butler, No. 5 Odessa, and receiving votes Hutchinson, Barton gets back to the feel good column of the total improving to 14-12 overall and 8-6 in conference play while sending NW Tech to its thirteenth straight loss falling to 2-12 in league and 2-22 overall.

Barton's short turnaround stretch continues on Monday in hosting Dodge City Community College at 1:00 p.m. followed by a Wednesday trip to Garden City Community College.

Cougars pick up needed softball sweep in Goodland

CHICAGO (AP) — Ochai Agbaji was all over the court. David McCormack dominated inside, and Christian Braun connected from deep.

With one dazzling finish, Kansas roared into the Final Four.

Agbaji, McCormack and Braun led the top-seeded Jayhawks to a brilliant second half in a 76-50 victory over Miami on Sunday, sending one of college basketball’s top programs to the national semifinals for the 16th time.

“That was about as well as we can play, the second half,” coach Bill Self said. “These guys earned it.”

After trailing by six at halftime, Kansas outscored Miami 47-15. The Jayhawks shot 59.3% (16 for 27) after the break, compared to 21.4% (6 for 28) for the Hurricanes. They also outrebounded Miami 25-11 in the final 20 minutes.

Once the Jayhawks started flashing their superior speed and athleticism, the Hurricanes couldn’t keep up.

“We started to play the score, not the game,” Miami forward Sam Waardenburg said.

Agbaji scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half. McCormack opened the half with his own 5-0 run and finished with 15 points on 6-for-7 shooting. Braun made Kansas’ first 3-pointer with 15:27 left to snap a 40-40 tie.

“We just needed some energy,” said Braun, who finished with 12 points. “I thought we were flat in the first half.”

Kansas (32-6), the only No. 1 seed left in the NCAA Tournament, won the Midwest Region for the 13th time with its ninth consecutive victory overall. Next up is a Final Four matchup with Villanova on Saturday in New Orleans.

Remy Martin, the region’s most outstanding player, had nine points and six rebounds for the Jayhawks. Jalen Wilson grabbed 11 boards, making up for a tough shooting day.

It’s the fourth Final Four for Self in his 19 seasons at Kansas. He also had one of the best teams in the country when the tourney was canceled in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The last time the Jayhawks made it to the semis, they lost 95-79 to coach Jay Wright and the Wildcats in 2018.

“I’ve thought all along that this was a possibility,” Self said. “But I’ve also thought all along that the margin for error wasn’t such where we could get loose and have it be a probability.”

Kameron McGusty scored 18 points and Isaiah Wong had 15 for No. 10 seed Miami in the program’s first appearance in the Elite Eight. The Hurricanes (26-11) were bidding to get coach Jim Larrañaga back to the Final Four for the first time since he led 11th-seeded George Mason on a memorable run in 2006.

“Just being able to accomplish what we accomplished this year, now teams coming in or new teams, two, three years down the line, that Elite Eight is going to be the goal,” McGusty said. “That’s what we were able to do this year, and I’m so happy for us. I love these guys.”

McGusty spent two seasons at Oklahoma, averaging 13.5 points in four games against Kansas before he transferred to Miami. And he looked comfortable playing against the Jayhawks again.

The redshirt senior guard scored 14 points to help the Hurricanes to a 35-29 halftime lead. But everything changed after the break.

With McCormack asserting himself inside and Braun and Ogbai picking up their play on the perimeter, Kansas outscored Miami 25-7 over the first 10 minutes of the second half.

“Kansas came out in the second half and really hit us with like a knockout punch,” Larrañaga said.

Wilson made two foul shots and Agbaji connected from 3 to lift the Jayhawks to a 54-42 lead with 10:14 left. And they just kept rolling.

A dunk by Agbaji capped a 10-0 run and made it 67-46 with 4:35 left, delighting the pro-Kansas crowd at the United Center. A 3 by Agbaji extended the lead to 23 points with 1:58 remaining.

“At halftime it was basically a matter of kind of a challenge against us,” Agbaji said. “We didn’t come this far to lay down or give up at this point. So just going out there and playing our style of basketball.”

Kansas improved to 6-0 in NCAA Tournament games played in the Windy City.

Playing in his hometown, Miami guard Charlie Moore had five points on 2-for-9 shooting. The 24-year-old Moore also spent two years with Kansas, sitting out during the 2017-18 season before appearing in 35 games in 2018-19.

The Cougar offense was held in check throughout the day manufacturing just three runs over the 16-inning twin bill generating six hits in the opener before being held to just four knocks in the nightcap.

Splitting the four-game weekend set, Barton falls to 8-4 in conference play and drops to 16-9 on the season while the Grizzlies move to 7-5 in conference play and 16-8 overall. Seeing its' six-game winning streak snapped, the Cougars will look to start a new one Monday as they host the development squad of Kansas Wesleyan University in a 3:00 p.m. seven inning doubleheader from Lawson-Biggs Field before hitting the road Thursday to open a four game weekend set against Garden City Community College.

Barton, ranked 12th in the latest national poll, stayed consistent throughout the two days of competition carding 331 and 333 rounds to finish with an 88-over 664. Host and No. 3 ranked Dodge City Community College grabbed the top three individual spots and four of the top six in winning the meet with a 44-over 620 while Fort Scott Community College placed third at 149-over 725.

Mathanee Pandee carded twin 81 rounds to place fourth at 18-over 162 to lead four Cougars in the top nine of the twenty-three entry field.

Pornnapa Inmee climbed two spots after an opening 83 round to card Barton's low round of the meet with a 80 to move into the 6th spot at 19-over 163.

Also in the top nine were Paulina Villavicencio at 24-over 168 (82-86) for 7th while Pawinee Sukasem placed 9th at 27-over 171 (85-86).

The remaining four Cougar entries all improved on their second rounds with Matilyn Newman leading the group moving up to the 11th spot at 32-over 176 (90-86). Sasha Guinsbourg made the tournament's largest second day improvement and move up the leaderboard shaving thirteen strokes off her opening round of 96 in carding a team third best 83 closing round for a 13th place 35-over 179.

Rounding out the entries were Jalyn Turner in 18th at 47-over 191 (98-93) and Haleigh Spray in 19th at 49-over 193 (99-94).

The Cougars are back on the course this week in hosting the KJCCC's second meet of the season held Friday and Saturday at Lake Barton Golf Course. Friday's action set to begin at 1:00 p.m. with Saturday's closing round starting at 9:00 a.m.

Jones ran 12 times for 61 yards in the Buccaneers’ 31-9 romp at Raymond James Stadium.

Jones effectively replaces Jerick McKinnon and Darrel Williams, both of whom are free agents, as the primary backups to the injury-prone Edwards-Helaire in the Kansas City backfield. The team also has tendered a qualifying offer to Derrick Gore but has little else in the running back room at this point in free agency.

The Chiefs have been actively retooling their roster during the offseason, especially after dealing three-time All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins last week in a blockbuster trade for a package of draft picks.

They signed former Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster shortly after the free-agency period opened, then signed former Packers wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling this past week. On defense, they added safety Justin Reid to help replace Tyrann Mathieu and signed role players such as former Carolina linebacker Jermaine Carter.

The Chiefs are still in the market for help on defense, particular at cornerback, where they lost breakout star Charvarius Ward to the 49ers in free agency. But they also could plug some of their remaining holes in the draft, where they have two selections in each of the first four rounds and 12 overall thanks to the Hill trade and compensatory picks.

Chiefs add RB Ronald Jones amid busy offseason

The Barton Community College softball team surrendered late runs Friday at Cougar Field in dropping a pair of conference games hosting Hutchinson Community College.

Barton's two run lead into the seventh went by the wayside as the Blue Dragons plated four in the frame to win the opener 7-5 then erased the Cougars' two run edge in the fifth inning by scoring five in capturing the sweep on an eventual 8-3 score.

Having lost to No. 6 (Butler) and No. 5 Odessa in its previous meetings, the pair of losses to nationally receiving votes drops Barton to .500 in conference play and overall, slipping to 6-6 in league and 12-12 on the season. Hutchinson improves to 20-4 on the season with a league leading 11-1 record.

The Cougars have a short turnaround with a Saturday trip to Goodland, Kansas, for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader at Northwest Kansas Technical College before playing its third contest date on Monday in hosting Dodge City Community College in a 1:00 p.m. twin bill.

Cougar Softball outscored late in dropping a pair to Hutchinson

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Creighton’s players gathered for a group hug near midcourt as the final seconds ticked down to the horn, then Tatum Rembao flung the ball skyward in jubilation.

Moments later, the Bluejays migrated to share the celebration with fans and family near courtside.

“The past two weeks hasn’t felt real,” Morgan Maly said.

Believe it, Morgan. The 10th-seeded Bluejays are within a game of the Final Four.

She scored a career-high 21 points in Creighton’s 76-68 win over Iowa State on Friday night as the Bluejays became only the fourth double-digit seed to reach a women’s NCAA Tournament regional final.

Rembao added 19 for the Bluejays, who entered the Greensboro Region semifinals savoring the program’s first run to the Sweet 16. Now, Creighton has joined Lamar in 1991 and Oregon in 2017 as 10-seeds that pushed to the Elite Eight. Gonzaga in 2011 was the lowest-seeded ever at No. 11 to reach the Elite Eight.

“This team just continues to amaze me,” longtime Creighton coach Jim Flanery said.

The challenge ahead is even bigger for the upstart team: a matchup with No. 1 overall tournament seed South Carolina for a trip to the Final Four.

Creighton (23-9), which upset second-seeded Iowa in the second round, shot 55% after halftime with six 3-pointers. As third-seeded Iowa State (28-7) made a desperate comeback to cut a 13-point deficit to three, the Bluejays maintained control by knocking down enough free throws to keep the Cyclones and Associated Press second-team All-American Ashley Joens at arm’s distance.

Rembao was key in that, making 6 of 8 in the final 45 seconds.

“I told them, you want to keep advancing because that’s the goal,” Flanery said. “But I also want to just keep coaching this team. So that’s kind of what I was thinking, was I just love coaching this team because it’s different people, different nights.”

Emily Ryan had 22 points, eight rebounds and six assists to lead Iowa State, which shot just 38%. Joens had 14 points but made just 3 of 11 shots and got much of her production at the line (7 of 7).

Iowa State was in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2010.

“We knew going into this game basketball is a make shot-miss-shot game,” longtime Cyclones coach Bill Fennelly said. “Especially with these two teams. They made a lot of tough shots tonight, and, unfortunately, we couldn’t get the ball in the basket when we needed it.”

Creighton: The Bluejays had showed plenty of composure by beating the Hawkeyes last weekend on the road, led by Lauren Jensen’s late 3-pointer. This time, they played with confidence in the third quarter and didn’t panic as the Cyclones inched closer and closer.

Iowa State: Iowa State’s win against Georgia last weekend provided a measure of redemption for a team that missed on a chance to go to last year’s Sweet 16 by losing on a last-second overtime shot to Texas A&amp;M. Fennelly said he had thanked his players “50 times” for getting him back to this point and encouraged them to enjoy the moment. But they couldn’t quite follow that with another step to the program’s first Elite Eight since 2009.

Creighton’s biggest lead, 66-53, came on back-to-back drives from near the 3-point arc from Payton Brotzki — with no helpside rotation to stop her — followed by a big 3-pointer from Rembao at the 7:16 mark.

Creighton made 12 of 19 shots (63.2%) with five 3s in the third quarter.

Joens came in averaging 20.5 points, but she headed to the bench with two fouls midway through the second quarter and never got in much of a groove.

She had just five points on 1-for-5 shooting by the break and went scoreless in the fourth quarter despite playing all 10 minutes.

“They did a great job defensively just staying on us, kind of knowing our personnel and how to guard,” Joens said.

Flanery eventually made his way to the postgame celebration but was more subdued than his players, offering a big smile and two thumbs-up to the crowd.

The players couldn’t wait for the locker room to bring out the water bottles, instead dousing Maly as she did a TV interview at midcourt, and then again when she rejoined the team.

“I just love playing with this team, and it makes the celebrations so much better,” said Maly, who made 7 of 10 shots with three 3-pointers.

Upstart Creighton women top Iowa State, reach Elite Eight

CHICAGO (AP) — Kansas’ Jalen Wilson noticed the excitement on the other side.

The top-seeded Jayhawks went from leading by 13 in the second half to trailing Providence by a point with their season in danger of slipping away.

But the only No. 1 seed left in the NCAA Tournament responded to that brief challenge, stood firm and closed out a 66-61 victory on Friday night to reach the Elite Eight.

“I saw how excited they were getting, they started talking a little bit,” Wilson said. “I’m still confident in my team. We would never get rattled. We’ve seen every type of game, every type of situation. I’m just always confident in whatever comes our way.”

Remy Martin scored a season-high 23 points, and Kansas held Providence to 17 points in the first half.

The Jayhawks (31-6) made it farther than fellow No. 1 seeds Gonzaga and Arizona, both ousted in the Sweet 16, and Baylor, whose title defense ended in the second round. They will face Miami — a 70-56 winner over Iowa State — in the Midwest Region final on Sunday.

Wilson added 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Jayhawks advanced to a regional final for the first time since 2018, when they reached their 15th Final Four. Coach Bill Self is seeking his fourth trip there since he arrived in 2003.

Kansas also moved ahead of Kentucky for most wins in Division I history with 2,354.

“I don’t know that I totally buy in 100 percent that we don’t ever get rattled,” Self said. “But I do think, as Jalen said, our league (the Big 12) has prepared us in the way you play so many close games. Every game is a fistfight. I think our guys have enough confidence that when things don’t go well as a team, they think that they can go make an individual play.”

After fourth-seeded Providence (27-6) took its one-point lead, Kansas responded with a 7-0 run.

Big 12 Player of the Year Ochai Agbaji scored a season-low five points. But with Martin and Wilson leading the way, the Jayhawks won their eighth straight.

“All the practices, everything that we’ve done leading up to this point, we revert back to that,” Martin said. “We work really hard in practice, we do what needs to be done, we listen to Coach.”

“Stay calm, let each other know that they’re gonna go through their runs, but as long as we stick together, as we’ve been doing all season, we’re gonna get through this,” Martin said.

Providence finished with its highest win total since the 1973-74 team went 28-4. It was the Friars’ deepest NCAA Tournament run since reaching the regional finals in 1997 under Pete Gillen.

Al Durham scored 21 points. But the Friars shot 33.8% and made 4 of 23 3-pointers.

“I thought our team all year played with a resolve and a resilience that was second to none in America,” coach Ed Cooley said. “These kids — men — battled through a lot of adversity. ... I’m not gonna let our men’s heads be down. This was one hell of a season, and we got beat by a great team.”

Durham, who transferred after four years at Indiana, called the Friars “a special group.”

“We were well connected, we all loved each other,” he said.

Kansas led 26-17 at halftime and 36-23 early in the second half before Providence went on a 9-2 run, capped by Ed Croswell’s three-point play.

That drew a loud roar from the Friars’ fans, and they had more to cheer after Noah Horchler nailed two 3-pointers in about a 50-second span to cut it to 41-40 midway through the half.

Reeves tied it at 44-all when he hit two free throws, and Horchler gave Providence its first lead at 48-47 when he scored on a layup with 5:49 remaining.

Wilson drove for a three-point play to put the Jayhawks back on top. Christian Braun drove for a layup, and David McCormack put back a wild miss by Wilson following a steal, making it 54-48 with 4:12 to play.

Agbaji had the Kansas contingent roaring when he threw down an alley-oop dunk to make it 57-50. A.J. Reeves answered with a 3 for Providence, but Kansas remained on top the rest of the way.

Providence: The Friars made a huge jump after finishing 13-13 a year ago. They won their first Big East regular-season championship and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2018.

Kansas: The Jayhawks delivered another solid defensive effort, particularly early on, and made enough shots to keep their championship hopes alive. They led by nine at the break after allowing their lowest point total in a half this season.

Kansas will try to remain unbeaten since a 74-64 loss at TCU on March 1. The Jayhawks are 3-1 all-time against Miami, but the teams haven’t played since a Kansas win in 1991.

The sophomore finished with a career-high 30 points, including six 3s and two game-clinching free throws with 7.8 seconds left. Love scored 27 of Carolina’s 45 points in the second half, including one stretch of 10 straight.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed with wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling on a $30 million, three-year contract to help replace the departed Tyreek Hill, a person familiar with the contract told The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal was pending a physical. The move came one day after the Chiefs traded Hill, a three-time All-Pro and one of the league’s most dangerous downfield threats, to the Dolphins for a package of five draft picks. It also comes less than a week after the Chiefs landed JuJu Smith-Schuster with a club-friendly one-year deal in the hopes that he’ll bounce back from a shoulder injury.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma State has boosted football coach Mike Gundy’s salary to $7.5 million for the 2022 calendar year. The school’s Board of Regents approved a $1 million increase in annual compensation and a $1 million annual retention bonus over each of the next five years. Other terms of his existing contract, including the $125,000 annual escalator and the annual one-year extension, will remain in place. Gundy has a 149-69 record in 17 seasons at Oklahoma State. Last season, the Cowboys tied a school record with 12 wins, including a Big 12-best 8-1 conference. They beat Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl and finished No. 7 in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll.

When Emily Ryan was in second grade in Claflin, the
elementary school put together a talent show. Emily chose to showcase basketball
ball handling as her talent in front of the school. 
 
“I could just kick myself because we didn’t take video of it,” joked Lisa Ryan,
Emily’s mother. “At the time, I didn’t think a lot about it, but now looking
back…yeah.” 
 
A second-grade talent show performance might have been a good sign for what was
to come. Emily is now using those ball handling skills as a sophomore with the
Iowa State University’s basketball team. Ryan and the Cyclones will compete in the
NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 Friday night against Creighton University in Greensboro,
North Carolina. 
 
Through 34 games this year, Emily is averaging 13 points per game, 7 assists and 4
rebounds. Her 243 assists so far has broken the Iowa State school record for
assists in a season. 
 
That success comes from what her mom refers to as a “good addiction.” 
 
“She is addicted to being in the gym and working out,” said Lisa Ryan. “Just
going on family vacations where she couldn’t be in the gym for a couple of
days would drive her nuts.” 
 
In Ames, Iowa, Emily will show up to the gym at 6:30 a.m. each day and usually
returns to the gym in the evenings in addition to going to practice. Her
freshman year on campus, was the COVID-19 year, and access to the gym was a
little more difficult but that did not slow down Ryan. 
 
“Josh Carper is the Director of Basketball Operations at Iowa State and Emily
would always contact him last year to let her in the gym,” said Lisa Ryan. “He jokes
that he got so sick of Emily because he would always have to let her in the
gym.” 
 
Those work habits were similar to her playing days at Central Plains High School where she
helped the Oilers go 106-0 with three state championships and a “Final
Four” appearance in 2020 after the tournament was cancelled because of the
pandemic. 
 
The success she has had in her first two years in college would probably
translate to any university, but it wasn’t always sure that it would be taking place
at Iowa State. Ryan had her mind made up on another university in the Midwest
until she was convinced to take a visit to Ames. 
 
“She was set on this other university,” said Lisa Ryan. “Her AAU coach, Keith
Ferguson, said to take at least two official visits so you have something to
compare. She didn’t want to. He asked what her second choice was and she said
probably Iowa State. She did and she changed her mind.” 
 
Emily was named to the 2022 All-Big 12 First Team while helping the Cyclones to a 28-6 record. The Sweet 16 matchup against Creighton will be a game, like many
others, the Ryan family will be attending in person. The Ryans left Wednesday
afternoon to make the 18-hour road trip to North Carolina. 
 
“We’ve gone somewhere to watch Emily almost every weekend this basketball
season,” said Lisa Ryan. “We didn’t travel sub-state basketball weekend or the
St. John Tournament weekend with our son in high school, but we have the route
to Ames, Iowa pretty much memorized.” 
 
For the rest of the Barton County area and Ryan supporters across the state, Iowa
State tips off against Creighton at 8:30 p.m. Friday and can be watched on ESPN
2. 
 
“The support in the entire state has been amazing over the past two years,”
said Lisa Ryan. “We’ll be somewhere else in the state and someone will come up
to us and say something about Emily and how they follow her. We don’t even know
who they are…it’s amazing.” 
 
From demonstrating ball handling skills in a second-grade talent show to
competing in the NCAA Sweet 16, there will be plenty of supporters in Kansas cheering
Friday for Iowa State and the girl with a “good addiction” from Claflin. 
 
“As a parent, I hope she’ll keep enjoying it and it doesn’t become a big stress
or anxiety type of thing,” said Lisa Ryan. “It hasn’t and I keep hoping it
stays that way. She loves basketball.”

A 'good addiction' has fueled Kansas support for Ryan, Iowa State

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State formally introduced new head coach Jerome Tang to the public during a press conference on Thursday (March 24) in the Shamrock Zone on the north concourse of Bramlage Coliseum.

Tang, 55, was hired as the school's 25th head men's basketball coach on Monday afternoon (March 21) after serving as one of the architects in helping Baylor into a national powerhouse in his 19 seasons (2003-22) as an assistant and associate head coach. He played an instrumental role in building the Bears program from one rocked by scandal and NCAA probation into one that has developed into one of the nation's top programs highlighted by the 2021 NCAA Championship and consecutive Big 12 regular-season titles in 2021 and 2022. He served his first 14 seasons (2003-17) on staff as an assistant coach before being promoted to associate head coach in 2017.

Tang was joined at Thursday's introductory press conference by K-State President Dr. Richard Linton and Director of Athletics Gene Taylor as well as his family, which included his wife Careylyen (Rey), son Seven, daughter Aylyn, parents Paul and Bano Tang and in-loves Calvin and Carolyn Carter.

Tang agreed to a 6-year contract, which was approved by the K-State Athletics, Inc., Board of Directors and President Linton. Tang will be paid $2.1 million in 2022-23 and will receive a $100,000 base salary increase each year remaining on the contract ($2.2 million in 2023-24, $2.3 million in 2024-25, $2.4 million in 2025-26, $2.5 million in 2026-27 and $2.6 million in 2027-28).

Tang will be the first Black men's head basketball coach in school history and just the fifth minority men's head coach in school history, following former baseball coach Dave Baker (1978-83), former football coach Ron Prince (2006-08), former men's basketball coach Frank Martin (2007-12) and current women's tennis coach Jordan Smith (2018-present).

Jerome Tang Introduced as K-State's 25th Head Men's Basketball Coach

The 6th ranked Barton Community College men's tennis team knocked off Emporia State University Thursday on the road with a 6-1 victory.

The Cougars took two of the three doubles matches to claim a one point advantage into singles play where a third set tiebreaker stood in the way of sweep of the one-versus-one matchups.

Barton gained the early match lead on No. 2 doubles tandem of James Kaoma and Barnabas Kalaba winning 7-6 over the Hornets Luiz Maia and Pablo Carranza while the No. 3 duo of Samyak Bajracharya and Marno Du Plessis competed together for the first time of the season to win 6-4 over Jaden Tredway and Cameron Kienholz.

The No. 1 tandem of Gustavo Campos and Eduardo Morais took the lone doubles loss falling in a close 6-4 match to Emporia's Theo Belmonte and Sergio Vera.

In singles play, Campos took the No. 1 slot over Maia 6-2, 7-5, but Kaoma fell in the No. 2 by 6-3, 2-6, and 10-6 in the break to Belmonte for the Hornets lone singles victory.

Morais had little trouble in the No. 3 versus Vera on 6-1, 6-2, scores while Kalaba won the first set 6-2 of the No. 4 matchup with Tredway to clinch the match on a tighter 7-5 score.

The lower lineup also chalked up convincing victories, Bajracharya defeating Lleyton Fosha 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 5 slot while Sebastiao Vilas registered a 6-3, 6-2, win in the No. 6 over Carson Mosier.

The Cougars have nearly a week off from competition before a busy stretch of matches beginning next Wednesday in a 1:00 p.m. first serve at Pratt Community College before joining their women teammates on a trip to Plano, Texas, competing in the SW Juco Regional held April 8-9.

 </figure>The 6th ranked Barton Community College men's tennis team knocked off Emporia State University Thursday on the road with a 6-1 victory.The Cougars took two of the three doubles matches to claim a one point advantage into singles play where a third set tiebreaker stood in the way of sweep of the one-versus-one matchups.Barton gained the early match lead on No. 2 doubles tandem of James Kaoma and Barnabas Kalaba winning 7-6 over the Hornets Luiz Maia and Pablo Carranza while the No. 3 duo of Samyak Bajracharya and Marno Du Plessis competed together for the first time of the season to win 6-4 over Jaden Tredway and Cameron Kienholz.The No. 1 tandem of Gustavo Campos and Eduardo Morais took the lone doubles loss falling in a close 6-4 match to Emporia's Theo Belmonte and Sergio Vera.In singles play, Campos took the No. 1 slot over Maia 6-2, 7-5, but Kaoma fell in the No. 2 by 6-3, 2-6, and 10-6 in the break to Belmonte for the Hornets lone singles victory.Morais had little trouble in the No. 3 versus Vera on 6-1, 6-2, scores while Kalaba won the first set 6-2 of the No. 4 matchup with Tredway to clinch the match on a tighter 7-5 score.The lower lineup also chalked up convincing victories, Bajracharya defeating Lleyton Fosha 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 5 slot while Sebastiao Vilas registered a 6-3, 6-2, win in the No. 6 over Carson Mosier.The Cougars have nearly a week off from competition before a busy stretch of matches beginning next Wednesday in a 1:00 p.m. first serve at Pratt Community College before joining their women teammates on a trip to Plano, Texas, competing in the SW Juco Regional held April 8-9.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed with wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling on a $30 million, three-year contract to help replace the departed Tyreek Hill, a person familiar with the contract told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal was pending a physical.

The move came one day after the Chiefs traded Hill, a three-time All-Pro and one of the league’s most dangerous downfield threats, to the Dolphins for a package of five draft picks. It also comes less than a week after the Chiefs landed JuJu Smith-Schuster with a club-friendly, one-year deal in the hope that he’ll bounce back from a shoulder injury.

Valdes-Scantling was a fifth-round pick of the Packers in the 2018 draft, quickly becoming a useful option for quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the passing game. He caught 123 passes for 2,153 yards and 13 touchdowns during his first four seasons in the league, appearing in all 16 games the first three before a hamstring injury hampered him last season. He wound up playing 11 games and catching 26 passes for 430 yards and three touchdowns.

Earlier in the day, the Chiefs announced the signing of wide receiver Corey Coleman, the No. 15 overall pick in the 2016 draft, in the hope that he can showcase the dynamic playmaking ability that once made him a star at Baylor.

Coleman spent two seasons with the Browns, catching 56 passes for 718 yards and five touchdowns, before he was traded to the Bills for a future seventh-round pick. Buffalo quickly released Coleman, then he spent time with the Patriots before he ended up with the Giants, where he appeared in eight games and caught five passes for 71 yards in 2018.

That was the last time he played in a game, though. The 27-year-old Coleman tore his ACL during the following preseason, then spent parts of the 2020 season on the Giants practice squad before spending last season out of football.

He’s another low-risk, high-reward chance taken by Chiefs general manager Brett Veach on a former first-round pick.

The Chiefs announced several other contracts on Thursday.

Defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi is returning after starting 52 of 64 games played since the Chiefs selected him in the third round of the 2018 draft. He’s primarily a run-stuffer but is coming off a career-best three sacks last season.

The Chiefs also announced the return of quarterback Chad Henne to back up Patrick Mahomes, the signing of Austin Reiter to back up center Creed Humphrey, and left tackle Geron Christian, who made eight starts for Houston last season.

Blake Bell is also returning on a one-year deal. He helped the Chiefs win the Super Bowl during the 2019 season, then spent a year in Dallas before returning to Kansas City, where he served mostly as a blocking tight end last season.

The Barton Community College baseball team protected its' home turf opening its' four game weekend set against Butler Community College with a pair of walk-offs, sweeping Thursday's home doubleheader.

The Cougars rode a walk-off Ricardo Sanchez RBI single in the home half of the seventh claiming the opener 2-1 while stringing together 12 runs on 15 hits in the nightcap earning an eight-inning run rule triumph in the nightcap.

Running their winning streak to five straight, Barton improves their Jayhawk West mark to 8-2 and season record to 16-7 while the Grizzlies fall to 5-5 in league play and 14-8 overall as the series shifts locations to McDonald Stadium on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader in El Dorado, KS.
