STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Lexie Hull scored a career-high 36 points with six 3-pointers and made six steals, leading No. 1 seed Stanford past eighth-seeded Kansas 91-65 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday night. With the win, the defending national champions extended their winning streak to 22 games and secured a trip to the Sweet 16. Cameron Brink added 13 points, 12 rebounds and four assists as the Cardinal used a dominant third quarter to pull away. Zakiyah Franklin scored 13 points to lead Kansas, which was back in the tourney for the first time since 2013.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Lexi Donarski scored 20 points and third-seeded Iowa State raced to its first Sweet 16 appearance since 2010 with a 67-44 win over sixth-seeded Georgia. Emily Ryan had 15 points, nine assists and six rebounds for the Cyclones, and Ashley Joens added 12 points. Jenna Staiti led Georgia with 16 points. The Bulldogs shot 31% from the floor and never had a lead. Iowa State will meet Creighton in a Sweet 16 matchup on Friday in Greensboro, North Carolina.
UNDATED (AP) — Double-digit seeds are leaving their mark on the first weekend of the women’s NCAA Tournament and bouncing some of the top players and teams in the country, including Iowa's Caitlin Clark and Baylor's NaLyssa Smith. Creighton and South Dakota continued the run of upsets as the two No. 10 seeds advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time ever for each school. That’s eight wins by double-digit seeds in this tournament — tying the most ever in NCAA women’s basketball history through two rounds set in 2018. There’s a chance for a few more to win Monday, which would break the mark when the regional semifinals field is completed.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Gabe Kalscheur scored 22 points and 11th-seeded Iowa State surprised Wisconsin in the Badgers’ backyard, advancing to the Sweet 16 with a 54-49 victory in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Izaiah Brockington added 10 points as the gritty Cyclones used their tough defense to hold off Johnny Davis and company in front of a raucous pro-Wisconsin crowd about 80 miles away from the school’s Madison campus. After winning just two games last season, Iowa State advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2016 and the sixth time in school history. It will play 10th-seeded Miami in the Midwest Region semifinals on Friday in Chicago.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Bennedict Mathurin made a 3-pointer to force overtime and scored six more points in the extra session, and top-seeded Arizona outlasted ninth-seeded TCU 85-80 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Mathurin finished with 30 points and Christian Koloko scored 28, including a putback dunk that slammed the door on the Horned Frogs with 9 seconds left in OT. Arizona’s two stars did enough for the Wildcats to avoid becoming the second No. 1 seed to fall during this tournament's opening weekend. They will face fifth-seeded Houston in the Sweet 16. Chuck O’Bannon Jr. had 23 points for TCU.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jaden Ivey made a critical 3-pointer with 1:01 left and finished with 18 points, and Purdue finally got past Texas coach Chris Beard in March. The Boilermakers beat the Longhorns 81-71 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Trevion Williams scored 22 points to lead the Boilermakers, who capitalized on a major disparity at the free-throw line to reach the Sweet 16. No. 3 seed Purdue advances to play 15th-seeded Saint Peter's in an East Region semifinal. Beard had beaten Purdue coach Matt Painter twice before in the NCAA Tournament. Marcus Carr led sixth-seeded Texas with 23 points.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Kevin McCullar made an emphatic dunk with 15 seconds left to cap a 10-1 closing run for No. 3 seed Texas Tech, which advanced to the Sweet 16 with a 59-53 victory over Notre Dame in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Kevin Obanor had 15 points and 15 rebounds, and McCullar and Bryson Williams each scored 14 for Texas Tech. The Red Raiders made their third round of 16 in the past four tournaments and fifth in school history. First-year coach Mark Adams' team will next face Duke and retiring coach Mike Krzyzewski. Dane Goodwin scored 14 points for cold-shooting Notre Dame.
UNDATED (AP) — Top seeds Gonzaga and Kansas are in the NCAA Sweet 16. So is giant killer Saint Peter’s, which became only the third No. 15 seed to make it this far. And Coach K’s farewell tour continues as he and his Duke Blue Devils made it to the Sweet 16, too. All eight of the regional semifinal matchups are set after a wild opening weekend that saw seven double-digit seeds win in the first round and four of them move on. This is the second year in a row a No. 15 has advanced. Last year it was Oral Roberts. This time it’s Saint Peter's, which knocked off Kentucky and Murray State.
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Jaren Holmes tossed in 23 points, Osun Osunniyi had a double-double and St. Bonaventure knocked out Oklahoma 70-68 in the second round of the NIT. Holmes sank 8 of 12 shots, including all four of his 3-point attempts, for the Bonnies (22-9). Osunniyi finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. St. Bonaventure never trailed after Holmes hit a 3-pointer with 5:24 remaining to give the Bonnies a 61-58 lead. Umoja Gibson hit from beyond the arc to pull the Sooners within 69-68 with 18 seconds left, but Dominick Welch made the second of two free throws and Marvin Johnson missed a jumper that was snagged by Osunniyi to end the game. Gibson hit six 3-pointers and scored 26 to pace the Sooners (19-16).
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — The Red Sox have reportedly agreed to terms with Rockies All-Star shortstop Trevor Story on a six-year, $140 million contract that would bring him to Boston to play second base. The deal gives the Boston a long-term answer at second. The position has been in flux since former AL MVP Dustin Pedroia was first injured in 2017. It also leaves Xander Bogaerts in place at shortstop and gives the team a backup plan on the left side of the infield if Bogaerts opts out of his contract at the end of this season. The deal was first reported by USA Today and confirmed by multiple outlets.
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — Kyle Schwarber and the Philadelphia Phillies have finalized their $79 million, four-year contract. Schwarber gets $19 million this year and $20 million in each of the following three seasons. A 29-year-old slugging outfielder, Schwarber split last season with Washington and Boston. He hit .266 with 32 home runs and had a grand slam for the Red Sox in the AL Championship Series. Schwarber will likely serve as the Phillies’ designated hitter, with time in the outfield and first base as well. Philadelphia also has a pending $100 million, five-year contract with free-agent slugger Nick Castellanos.
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — The Minnesota Twins and right-handed reliever Joe Smith have finalized a one-year contract. The move gives Minnesota a veteran arm for a bullpen in need of more depth. Smith pitched in 50 combined games last season for Houston and Seattle. He posted a 4.99 ERA in 39 2/3 innings. The side-arm thrower has pitched for seven major league teams over 15 years with a career 3.09 ERA and a .229 opponent batting average. Twins relievers ranked 20th in baseball last season with a 4.39 ERA.
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Bears have signed Indianapolis Colts defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad to a two-year contract and Kansas City Chiefs receiver and kick returner Byron Pringle to a one-year deal. They also re-signed safety DeAndre Houston-Carson to a one-year contract. Muhammad spent the past four seasons in Indianapolis. Pringle goes from a team that went 12-5 and lost to Cincinnati in the AFC championship game after back-to-back Super Bowl appearances to one that is rebuilding.
