For the second time in three years, Baylor was chosen by the league’s head coaches to win the Big 12 men’s basketball regular season title. The Bears were also the preseason favorite in 2020-21 and went on to win both the Big 12 and NCAA championships.

Baylor received five first-place votes and totaled 77 points to edge out Kansas for the top spot. The Jayhawks had four first-place nods and 73 points to place second. Texas was picked third with the final first-place vote and 64 points. TCU was chosen fourth followed by a tie for fifth between Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. The remainder of the poll included Oklahoma in seventh, Iowa State eighth, West Virginia ninth and Kansas State 10th.

The Big 12 has won the last two national championships as Kansas brought home the 2022 trophy following Baylor’s title in 2021. Big 12 teams have played in the last four Final Fours and the last three national championship games. The Big 12 is the first conference to win back-to-back national championships since 2009 and 2010 and is the only conference to have three different teams play in three consecutive championship games. Sixty percent of Big 12 institutions have advanced to the Final Four since 2002, the highest percentage among conferences.

Head coaches and student-athletes from each team will appear at the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tipoff, presented by Old Trapper in Kansas City on Wednesday October 19. Interviews from the event will air on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ from 9:00 a.m. - Noon CT. The regular season will start on Monday, November 7 with conference play beginning on New Year’s Eve.

Lady Cougars fall at home to Cloud County

NEW YORK (AP) — Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark described recent discussions with television partners ESPN and Fox as “meaningful” as the conference looks into the possibility of striking a media rights deal almost two years before the current contract expires.

“So (the conference) is not a free agent,” Yormark told AP on Wednesday. “I can’t go out there and talk to an Amazon or an Apple or CBS. But in a world that’s changing, why don’t we explore an early conversation which could, maybe, lead to a negotiation. And I can tell you that we’ve had meaningful conversations for the last three-plus weeks, and we’ll see where they go.”

The Big 12 announced in late August it planned to engage ESPN and Fox, even though the exclusive negotiating window between the conference and the networks does not open until February 2024. The Big 12's deals with the networks expire in June of that year.

“There’s no timetable,” Yormark said. “If we can’t get to a deal, then the fallback is 16 months from now. But I’m a big fan of ESPN. I’m a big fan of Fox. We’re at a point right now where it’s important to elevate and amplify our brand. And I think they’re the two best partners to do it."

The Big 12 is in transition as it prepares for Cincinnati, BYU, Houston and Central Florida to join next year and for Texas and Oklahoma to depart by 2025. The conference is likely to be 14 teams for at least one season. It currently has 10 schools.

Since being named commissioner in June to replace the retiring Bob Bowlsby, Yormark has talked publicly about the possibility of adding more schools to the Big 12, even saying the conference would like to grow “out West.”

Since it was announced in June that Southern California and UCLA would be leaving the Pac-12 for the Big Ten, the Pac-12 has been trying to negotiate a new television deal as a way to stabilize its membership.

The Pac-12's deal expires next year and the conference did open the exclusive negotiating window with ESPN, but that has now closed without a deal being struck. The Pac-12 could still land a deal with ESPN, but it can now bring its rights to the open market.

Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff has said his conference being next in line for a new media rights deal after the Big Ten's $7 billion megadeal with three networks was an advantage the Pac-12 had over the Big 12.

Yormark said engaging with ESPN and Fox was an effort to create some certainty for the conference.

“The strategy was clarity and stability as we’re looking to grow this conference in every respect,” Yormark said. “Obviously, it has to be the right economic deal, but it’s not just about economics. It’s also about the partnership, and what it can do for our business and our brand and the profile of our schools, which is critically important to me.”

Some things to watch in Week 7 of the Big 12 season:

No. 8 Oklahoma State (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) at No. 13 TCU (5-0, 2-0). The Big 12 will be down to one undefeated team after Saturday's game between its highest-ranked and highest-scoring teams. This is the second week in a row the Horned Frogs play another undefeated team — they won 38-31 last week at Kansas on Max Duggan's 24-yard TD pass to Quentin Johnston with 1:36 left.

Oklahoma State beat TCU 63-17 last November in the aftermath of coach Gary Patterson's departure and a game Duggan missed with a foot injury. The Cowboys and Frogs average 46.4 points a game this season. Oklahoma State senior Spencer Sanders (278.8 yards passing per game) and Duggan (261) are the league's top two passers. Sanders' league-high 18 touchdowns (12 passing, six rushing) are one more than Duggan (14 passing, three rushing).

Texas running back Bijan Robinson vs. Iowa State defense. Robinson is second in the Big 12 with 107.5 yards rushing per game and has four consecutive 100-yard rushing games, one short of matching his career high. The Cyclones last week held league rushing leader Deuce Vaughn of Kansas State to 23 yards on 10 carries before he left the game midway through the fourth quarter with a leg injury. Robinson is the Big 12 leader with 141.3 total yards per game and 11 touchdowns scored (10 rushing, one receiving). Iowa State has allowed only 91 yards rushing, 278 total yards and just less than 14 points a game, all best in the Big 12 and top 13 nationally. The Longhorns average 445 total yards and about 39 points a game.

Oklahoma has its first three-game losing streak since 1998. The Sooners on Saturday host No. 19 Kansas, which they have beaten 17 times in a row for their longest active winning streak over any team. ... Big 12 will have lone undefeated after Oklahoma St. at TCU

receiver Davante Adams has been charged with misdemeanor assault for
shoving a photographer to the ground as he left the field following a
loss at Kansas City. Kansas City, Missouri, police said Adams pushed
Ryan Zebley to the ground while running off the field following the
Raiders’ 30-29 loss to the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on Monday
night. Police called it an “intentional, overt act” that caused
whiplash, a headache and a possible minor concussion. Adams
apologized in his postgame comments to the media and later on
Twitter.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y.
(AP) — Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott appeared at ease in
addressing questions about the team's most recent visit to Kansas
City to play the Chiefs. It was an outcome dubbed as '13 Seconds,'
representing how much time was left in regulation when Buffalo
squandered a three-point lead in a 42-36 overtime AFC divisional
round playoff loss in January. McDermott says the team has grown and
matured from the experience. The showdown between 4-1 teams is the
fifth between the non-division rivals in three years. The Chiefs have
won three of four, including two playoff meetings.

Defensive players
around the NFL are frustrated about roughing-the-passer penalties,
questioning what constitutes a legal hit and wondering how far
referees will go to protect quarterbacks. Two disputed calls in Week
5 sparked outrage among players, coaches and fans, prompting many to
ask for change. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay told The
Associated Press he would support video reviews for these penalties.
Despite the outcry, roughing-the-passer penalties are down 45% from
this point last year. Through Week 5 in 2021, 51 were called. Only 28
have been called this season, according to league stats.

FORT WORTH, Texas
(AP) — Max Duggan has gone from losing his job as TCU's starting
quarterback to being one of the nation's best passers. He is exceling
in coach Sonny Dykes' system after the new coaching staff initially
went with a different starter than the guy who started most of the
past three seasons. Duggan has thrown for 1,305 yards and a Big
12-best 14 touchdowns with one interception. Redshirt freshman
Chandler Morris started the opener before getting hurt. Dykes says he
has been impressed with how Duggan has handled the entire situation.
Duggan says he was initially disappointed but never felt sorry for
himself.

IRVING, Texas (AP) —
TCU guard Mike Miles has been picked as the preseason Big 12 player
of the year by the league’s coaches. Miles, Baylor guard Adam
Flagler and Kansas forward Jalen Wilson are unanimous picks on the
All-Big 12 team announced Wednesday. The team was voted on by league
coaches who couldn't vote for their own players. Oklahoma State guard
Avery Anderson and Texas teammates Timmy Allen and Marcus Carr are
also on the team. Oklahoma senior guard Grant Sherfield, a transfer
from Nevada, was tabbed the league’s preseason newcomer of the
year, and Baylor guard Keyonte George the top incoming freshman.

UNDATED (AP) —
This weekend in college football includes a season-high six games
matching teams ranked in the AP Top 25. Three of those games also
match unbeaten teams. They include No. 3 Alabama at No. 6 Tennessee;
No. 10 Penn State at No. 5 Michigan; and No. 8 Oklahoma State at No.
13 TCU. By Saturday night, the championship picture could be very
different. AP College Football Writer Ralph Russo calls it a Super

shoving a photographer to the ground as he left the field following a
loss at Kansas City. Kansas City, Missouri, police said Adams pushed
Ryan Zebley to the ground while running off the field following the
Raiders’ 30-29 loss to the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on Monday
night. Police called it an “intentional, overt act” that caused
whiplash, a headache and a possible minor concussion. Adams
apologized in his postgame comments to the media and later on

(AP) — Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott appeared at ease in
addressing questions about the team's most recent visit to Kansas
City to play the Chiefs. It was an outcome dubbed as '13 Seconds,'
representing how much time was left in regulation when Buffalo
squandered a three-point lead in a 42-36 overtime AFC divisional
round playoff loss in January. McDermott says the team has grown and
matured from the experience. The showdown between 4-1 teams is the
fifth between the non-division rivals in three years. The Chiefs have
won three of four, including two playoff meetings.Defensive players
around the NFL are frustrated about roughing-the-passer penalties,
questioning what constitutes a legal hit and wondering how far
referees will go to protect quarterbacks. Two disputed calls in Week
5 sparked outrage among players, coaches and fans, prompting many to
ask for change. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay told The
Associated Press he would support video reviews for these penalties.
Despite the outcry, roughing-the-passer penalties are down 45% from
this point last year. Through Week 5 in 2021, 51 were called. Only 28
have been called this season, according to league stats.NEW YORK (AP) —
Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark says he has had “meaningful”
conversations with ESPN and Fox as the conference explores striking a
media rights deal almost two years before the current contract
expires. The Big 12 announced in late August it planned to engage
ESPN and Fox, even though the exclusive negotiating window between
the conference and the networks does not open until February 2024.
The Big 12′s deals with the networks expire in June of that year.
Yormark says there is no timetable for the discussions to produce a
deal. He says ESPN and Fox would be the two best partners to boost
the Big 12 brand.FORT WORTH, Texas
(AP) — Max Duggan has gone from losing his job as TCU's starting
quarterback to being one of the nation's best passers. He is exceling
in coach Sonny Dykes' system after the new coaching staff initially
went with a different starter than the guy who started most of the
past three seasons. Duggan has thrown for 1,305 yards and a Big
12-best 14 touchdowns with one interception. Redshirt freshman
Chandler Morris started the opener before getting hurt. Dykes says he
has been impressed with how Duggan has handled the entire situation.

TCU guard Mike Miles has been picked as the preseason Big 12 player
of the year by the league’s coaches. Miles, Baylor guard Adam
Flagler and Kansas forward Jalen Wilson are unanimous picks on the
All-Big 12 team announced Wednesday. The team was voted on by league
coaches who couldn't vote for their own players. Oklahoma State guard
Avery Anderson and Texas teammates Timmy Allen and Marcus Carr are
also on the team. Oklahoma senior guard Grant Sherfield, a transfer
from Nevada, was tabbed the league’s preseason newcomer of the

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The banged-up Kansas City Chiefs could be missing two more defensive starters and a key contributor in the secondary when they face the Buffalo Bills on Sunday in a rematch of their thrilling overtime victory in January's playoffs.

The Chiefs already were missing starting linebacker Willie Gay Jr., who will finish a four-game suspension for an offseason incident, and still could be without first-round draft pick Trent McDuffie at cornerback for the fifth consecutive game.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said cornerback Rashad Fenton would miss practice Wednesday with a hamstring injury, and that backup safety Bryan Cook remained out with a concussion. They were injured in Monday night's win over the Raiders along with defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton, who is likely headed to injured reserve after tearing his left ACL.

The Chiefs made a series of moves to fortify their roster, waiving defensive end Benton Whitley and signing defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth from the practice squad. Stallworth has appeared in 50 games over four seasons with the Saints and Colts, and was close to making the 53-man roster out of camp until he was beaten out by Khalen Saunders.

The Chiefs also cut defensive tackle Cortez Broughton from the practice squad and signed running back Wayne Gallman to it. Gallman played in 53 games in four seasons with the Giants before splitting last season with the Falcons and Vikings.

The biggest injury would be to Fenton, who started eight games last season and the first five this season, though he has struggled in recent weeks. He was beaten by the Raiders' Davante Adams on a long touchdown reception Monday night, and he was flagged for pass interference while trying to guard him, ultimately leading to another touchdown.

The Chiefs would likely turn to Joshua Williams, a fourth-round pick who has mostly played special teams, to start opposite fellow rookie Jaylen Watson. Williams helped to cover Adams in the final seconds as Kansas City preserved its win.

“I always go back to (GM Brett) Veach and the job his guys do,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “This kid went to a smaller school, he's very intelligent, he's big, but he hasn't played at this level. He jumped right into training camp and OTAs and worked, and you pull for that kid, and doing what he's doing.”

Reid did say that McDuffie, who hurt his hamstring in the opener against Arizona, began practice Wednesday, beginning a 21-day window in which Kansas City must activate him or shut him down for the season. But the coach made it sound as if McDuffie would be back on the field sooner than later, and that Sunday was a longshot possibility.

“He's been rehabbing and we'll just see how he does,” Reid said. “He's been going full speed with his rehab.”

Defensive end Mike Danna was back at practice Wednesday after missing his third consecutive game with a calf injury, as was kicker Harrison Butker, who has practiced sparingly while recovering from a sprained ankle in the opener.

His replacement, Matthew Wright, set a franchise record Monday night with a 59-yard field goal against the Raiders. But he also missed a 41-yarder earlier in the game, which may have led Reid to try a failed 2-point conversion late in the game.

The Chiefs are still a week away from getting Gay back on the field, though he was able to be in the facility for the second consecutive week. Darius Harris, his replacement, led the Chiefs with eight tackles and a sack against Las Vegas.

“Great kid, very hard worker. Even on the scout team he gives you 110 percent,” Reid said, “so you just figured he would get in there and do fine. He's been able to digest the offense well and stay on top of that.”

Injuries mounting for Chiefs with Bills matchup on horizon

Dennis Bottcher and Tajay Grant of the 6th ranked Barton Community College men's soccer team were tabbed on the league weekly honors with a national award added on the wall as well.

The pair guided the Cougars to a 1-0 week, in a 2-1 win over national receiving votes Dodge City Community College.

Bottcher's second conference Goalkeeper of the Week honor comes with the national honor as the NJCAA Division I Goalkeeper of the Week. For Grant it was his second consecutive KJCCC Division I Player of the Week honor and third of the season.

Bottcher remained nails in net notching his fifth straight victory. The freshman made five saves with the lone goal coming on a perfectly placed through ball to the back post in capitalizing on a collapsed Barton defense. The victory over the week improves Bottcher's season record to 10-2 while helping the Cougars stay atop the conference standings.

Grant proved to be the difference make with both net shakers in Barton's 2-1 victory over Dodge City to avenge its earlier conference loss to the Conquistadors. Following a scoreless first half, Grant put the Cougars out front 8:33 in the second half then provided the game winner less than seven minutes after the Conquistadors equalizer for his conference leading 13th of the year.

Barton will look to clinch at least a share for the KJCCC West regular season title Wednesday evening in a tough road tilt against 4th ranked Cowley College set for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. The Cougars won the first go around 1-0 back on September 14th behind Lucas Constante's game winner in the 88th minute.

Adrian Martinez had done just about everything in his first four years of college football except play on a winning team.

Those wins are finally coming for him at Kansas State.

The 17th-ranked Wildcats (5-1, 3-0) sit atop the Big 12 standings in large part because of their dual-threat quarterback. He rushed for a combined 319 yards and acounted for nine touchdowns in breakout performances against Oklahoma and Texas Tech before he led the Wildcats to a grind-it-out victory at Iowa State last week.

Martinez has won three straight games for the first time after never winning more than two in a row at Nebraska. He was picked as the Big 12's top first-year transfer at midseason in a vote of Associated Press writers covering the conference.

Martinez set more than a dozen records in his time at Nebraska, but the Cornhuskers were just 15-29 while he often played hurt.

His 48 turnovers (30 interceptions, 18 fumbles) were most in the Bowl Subdivision from 2018-21, according to Sportradar. So far at K-State he has not thrown an interception or lost a fumble.

Martinez averages 241 yards of total offense per game to rank sixth in the Big 12, and he's fourth in rushing at 91 yards per game.

A key point of the early season was a 17-10 home loss to Tulane on Sept. 17. Martinez acknowledged he had played tentatively, and coach Chris Klieman and offensive coordinator Collin Klein sat him down and told him to forget about the possibility of making mistakes and let his natural ability take over.

“”That really speaks to the culture of this team and program, the leadership of coach Klieman and some of the older guys on this squad," Martinez said. “We were determined not to let it ruin our season. All our goals are still on the horizon. The Big 12, that's all it's about.”

QB Max Duggan, TCU (5-0, 2-0). He started 29 games for the Horned Frogs pre-Sonny Dykes and then lost the job to Chandler Morris in preseason practices. Morris sprained a knee in the opener against Colorado and hasn't been seen since. Duggan, meanwhile, has thrown for 261 yards per game with 14 touchdowns against one interception. He's second to Ohio State's C.J. Stroud in passer rating (194.36) and yards per attempt (10.3).

DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah, Kansas State. One of the most disruptive forces in the Big 12, he's building on a 2021 season that saw him earn all-conference first-team honors. He's tied for second nationally with 6.5 sacks. His two forced fumbles give him eight in 24 games, with his 0.33 career average best among active FBS players.

Kansas second-year coach Lance Leipold is known as a program builder, and his work with the No. 19 Jayhawks (5-1, 2-1) could be his best yet. The Jayhawks are ranked this season for the first time since 2009 and are one win from bowl eligibility for the first time since 2008. Leipold has done it with a big-play offense that has 19 plays of at least 30 yards and a defense fortified by a couple of key transfers.

Kansas was the easy choice, and last week's narrow home loss to TCU didn't do much to diminish the magnitude of what's happening in Lawrence. This is a program that hasn't won a conference championship in football since 1968, and it lost 91 of 97 Big 12 games under five coaches before Leipold took over last year. The Jayhawks still have a long list of accomplishments they would like to check off. The next opportunity comes Saturday when they go for their first win at Oklahoma since 1996.

Kansas QB Jalon Daniels was among the nation's most efficient passers until he injured a shoulder in the first half against TCU. He's doubtful for the game at OU. Daniels has thrown for 11 touchdowns and run for five, has been intercepted just once, and averages 234.5 yards of total offense per game. His six runs of at least 20 yards are second-most in the Big 12 and he's had eight passes go for at least 30.

Oklahoma (3-3) looked every bit the top-10 team it was when it won 49-14 at Nebraska. Now first-year coach Brent Venable's Sooners are 0-3 in Big 12 play for the first time since 1998 and coming off a 49-0 beatdown by Texas that was their most lopsided loss in the Red River Rivalry. The Sooners' offense has gone dormant in the absence of QB Dillon Gabriel, who's been out with a concussion since Oct. 1.

West Virginia coach Neal Brown is 2-3 in his fourth season and finding four more wins to get to .500 in the regular season won't be easy. One of the wins was against FCS Towson. Brown was one of the hot coaches after three straight double-digit-win seasons at Troy, but he's 19-21 at West Virginia. The Mountaineers are approaching four straight years without an appearance in the AP poll, which would be the program's longest stretch since 1959-68.

Gabriel was one of the Big 12's top transfers when he moved from Central Florida to Oklahoma and was sharp as he led the Sooners to a 3-0 start. He got outplayed by Martinez in the loss to K-State and has been out since the second quarter against TCU, when he took a devastating hit from Jamoi Hodge. The Sooners have scored one touchdown in 18 full possessions since Gabriel's been out.

Daniels was hurt just before halftime of the 38-31 loss when he was scrambling toward the sideline and was sacked by the Horned Frogs' Jamoi Hodge. He was evaluated in the medical tent before heading to the locker room ahead of the rest of the team for more tests. When he returned to the sideline in the second half, Daniels was dressed in sweats.

“Jalon did not practice today and would probably be put in the doubtful area,” Jayhawks coach Lance Leipold said Tuesday. “Again, looking at it day to day, but hasn't done anything yet and that's probably the extent I will comment at this time.”

Daniels had been the catalyst behind the Jayhawks' 5-0 start to the season, earning early Heisman Trophy consideration by throwing for 1,072 yards with 11 touchdowns and one interception while running for 335 yards and five more scores.

He was 5 of 10 for 89 yards and had run seven times for 6 yards before leaving the game against the Horned Frogs.

Bean, who started nine games last season before getting hurt, nearly rallied the Jayhawks to the win.

The senior opened with a tying touchdown pass to Mason Fairchild, then connected with Luke Grimm and Quentin Skinner on TD tosses later in the third quarter. Bean threw a fourth touchdown pass to Skinner with 4:29 left, knotting it 31-all, but TCU's Max Duggan answered with a go-ahead touchdown pass to Quentin Johnston with 1:36 to go.

Bean had the Jayhawks on the move one last time, but a fourth-down pass from the TCU 34 fell incomplete with 37 seconds left. Wide receiver Lawrence Arnold appeared to be held on the play but no flag was thrown. And all the Horned Frogs had to do was snap the ball, take a knee and let the clock run out to remain unbeaten.

“No matter who’s in,” Bean said, “we have the ability to go down and score the ball.”

The Barton Community College men's golf team carded a pair of solid rounds the past two days in running away with the Barton Invitational title in protecting its home turf of Lake Barton Golf Course.

The Cougars posted a 281 on Monday before battling 15-20mph south winds Tuesday with another solid 283 card for a 4-over 564 in the two days for a fifty-nine stroke victory. In third following a 309, Hesston College shot a 314 on Tuesday in moving up to the second spot at 63-over 623 as Fort Scott Community College had 306 and 318 rounds finishing at 64-over 624. Central Christian College started off with a 309 before closing with a 326 in finishing eleven strokes back at 75-over 635.

Axel Bolander stayed under par in both rounds, opening with a 2-under 68 followed with a final 69 to win by three strokes compiling a 3-under 137. Making a final day charge with the field's best round of 2-under, Otto Heden finished at even par 140 after an opening 72 card.

Sophomores Tom Lehmann and Ethan Bonnett finished third and fourth respectively, Lehman at 2-over 142 with 70 and 72 rounds while Bonnett accumulated a 5-over 145 after 71 and 74 rounds.

Cracking the top ten of the twenty-six member field, Thantup Saengvut put together 78 and 76 rounds for a 14-over 154 while Tanapoom Kaewjoey finished just outside in 11th with a 75 and 81 card for a 16-over 156.

Anthony Arriola and Keegan O'Shea rounded out the Barton entries in a tie for 22nd at 24-over 164. Arriola carded 80-84 rounds with O'Shea opening with a 4-over 75 before sliding down with a closing 89.

Barton will wrap up the fall portion of the schedule next week at Meadowlake Golf Course in Enid, Oklahoma, participating in the Ranger Fall Invitational held October 17-18.

Bolander leads Barton men's golf in home tournament

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have been walking a fine line between success and failure through the first month of the season.

But whether it was the frantic finish to beat the Chargers, their collapse in Indianapolis or their close shave Monday night, when the Chiefs rallied from a 17-point deficit for a 30-29 victory over the Raiders, one thing has become clear: This isn't the same Chiefs team that once routed opponents with speed and big plays and unstoppable offense.

Instead, it's one that thrives on overcoming adversity.

“It was hard work, staying together,” said Chiefs safety Justin Reid, who was run over by the Raiders' Josh Jacobs at one point during the game. "Give credit to the culture of this team, that we didn’t start falling apart on each other when things looked ugly. We found a way to battle through the adversity and come out on top.”

Indeed, it was the defense that came through in the end.

The Chiefs had rallied behind four touchdown passes from Patrick Mahomes to Travis Kelce to take the lead in the fourth quarter, and they had a chance to run out the clock if they could keep picking up first downs.

But instead, they were forced to punt the ball back to Las Vegas with about 2 1/2 minutes remaining in the game.

The Raiders picked up two first downs, moving close to midfield, before an incompletion and a pass to Hunter Renfrow set up third-and-short.

That's when the Chiefs covered Davante Adams well enough that replays showed he had to juggle a long catch down the sideline, bringing up fourth down.

And then came a furious blitz, forcing Raiders quarterback Derek Carr to heave the ball downfield, where the only receivers in the area collided and the pass fell incomplete.

The Chiefs had their fourth straight win over their bitter rivals.

“Being down by 17, nobody cracked,” said Kelce, who matched a Chiefs record for TD catches in a game. "You didn’t see doubt in anybody’s eyes. All it did was build the beast, made us rally together, circle the wagons in a way and fight for each other. When you see that out of us — we know we can play some good football when we have that kind of mentality.”

Imagine if they keep that mentality once they get healthy.

The Chiefs hope to get first-round pick Trent McDuffie back from a hamstring injury, and the cornerback should help a pass defense that Adams beat for TD catches of 58 and 48 yards.

Willie Gay Jr. has one game left on a four-game suspension. Defensive end Mike Danna (calf) and kicker Harrison Butker (ankle) should be back soon, too.

“We have a lot of the same players that have been in some deficit games,” Mahomes said, "but at the same time we have a lot of new guys as well. And so for guys to respond and just to keep battling, no matter we’re down 17 points, and show that we can fight back from anything, that’s what you want to see out of any great football team.”

The Raiders did a good job blanketing Kelce everywhere but the end zone. All four of his TDs came within 10 yards of the goal line; he had seven catches for 25 yards in all.

And given the struggles the Chiefs have had running the ball in short-yardage situations, Kelce's ability to carve out space offers them a priceless security blanket.

The pass defense allowed 241 yards and the two TD tosses to Adams, but the only reason it wasn't more was the fact that Jacobs was having such a heyday on the ground, running for 154 yards and a score. Adams also drew a pair of pass interference calls, the second of which gave Las Vegas the ball at the goal line and led to a touchdown.

Jerick McKinnon has largely been an afterthought behind Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Isiah Pacheco in the Chiefs backfield, but it was the veteran that provided a spark with a tackle-busting 30-yard run that led to their first touchdown. McKinnon finished with a team-high 53 yards rushing on just eight carries while catching two passes for 19 yards.

Defensive back Rashad Fenton was burned by Adams on his first long TD catch, had one of the pass interference penalties and was caught out of position on another long pass play later in the game.

It was the latest in a string of poor performances for one of last season's pleasant surprises, who should have a sense of urgency given it's a contract year.

DT Tershawn Wharton's season is over after tearing the ACL in his left knee. Defensive end Frank Clark had to leave the game with an illness, safety Bryan Cook sustained a concussion and cornerback Chris Lammons hurt his right hip.

Fresh off a record breaking two-round score a week ago, the Barton Community College women's golf team broke another record Monday as the Cougars carded the program's first ever sub-300 round in hosting the Barton Invitational.

Taking advantage of perfect weather conditions and their home Lake Barton Golf Course, the Cougars accumulated an 18-over 298 on Monday to better the 300 rounds recorded by the 2018-19 squad.

Returning for Tuesday's final round greeted by 15-20mph south winds, the Cougars carded a 326 for a two round total of 64-over 624.

The home meet consisted of just three teams, Barton's "B" group shaving four strokes off its Monday score for an overall 224-over (394-390) while Fort Scott Community College finished at 303-over 863 (428-435).

Yu Wei Chiang bettered the abbreviated thirteen member field with a 5-over 145, carding rounds of 73 and 72 including an impressive Tuesday birdie on the par-3 16th hole into the wind.

Moving up a spot on Tuesday was Valentina Leyva at 16-over 156 behind 75 and 81 rounds as Pornnapa Inmee slid to third at 20-over 160 on 74 and 86 cards. Andrea Peraza was three strokes behind at 23-over 163 (76-87) with Saya Schweitzer carding a Monday 8-over 78 but did not compete Tuesday in rounding out the "A" Team entries.

Four Cougars compiled the "B" team with Paulina Villavicencio leading the way with a 28-over 168 (81-87). Katina Bartel followed an opening 101 with a 93 to move up two spots at 54-over 194, Allyson Kaiser carded twin 99 cards for a 58-over 198, and Lillyan Kimberlin finished 9th in of the field with an 84-over 224 on 113 and 111 rounds.

Andrea Peraza was three strokes behind at 23-over 163 (76-87) with Saya Schweitzer carding a Monday 8-over 78 but did not compete Tuesday in rounding out the "A" Team entries.Four Cougars compiled the "B" team with Paulina Villavicencio leading the way with a 28-over 168 (81-87). Katina Bartel followed an opening 101 with a 93 to move up two spots at 54-over 194, Allyson Kaiser carded twin 99 cards for a 58-over 198, and Lillyan Kimberlin finished 9th in of the field with an 84-over 224 on 113 and 111 rounds.Barton will wrap up the fall portion of the schedule next week at Meadowlake Golf Course in Enid, Oklahoma, participating in the Ranger Fall Invitational held October 17-18.

The goal of a good sports official is to remain invisible; to act as a fair and competent arbiter of the rules. But that goal becomes more difficult as those with a stake in the outcome of the game - parents, coaches, and athletes - become more vocal. 

Groups like the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) and Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) are making a social media push to "bench bad behavior" in an effort to recruit and keep more officials. As the slogan goes, "With no high school officials, there can be no high school sports." In February, the NFHS reported that 50,000 officials nationwide had discontinued their service since the 2018-19 school year.

Great Bend High School Activities Director Matt Westerhaus has seen the impact at his new job and at his old position at Junction City High School.

"I have observed a decline in the availability of officials at all levels, varsity and sub-varsity," he said. "At both places, we have been very fortunate to have local people to help out with our sub-varsity schedules for officiating.  Varsity officials need to be registered with KSHSAA, sub-varsity officials do not need to be registered, and that level provides a great opportunity for officials to get their feet in the door, learn the game and then hopefully move up to be able to help at the varsity level."

Mark Goodheart assigns officials for three leagues in central and western Kansas: the Western Athletic Conference, Central Kansas League, and Central Prairie League. Bad sportsmanship has always been an issue, but Goodheart said a new challenge is for officials to find coverage at their full-time jobs so they can leave early to cover games. That particularly impacts non-varsity level sports.

"I think there's always been somewhat of a shortage, but I think it got more critical during COVID," he said. "We had begun to pick up a few more people in the last few years. Varsity officials, we can usually cover."

A shortage at the beginner level of officiating ultimately leads to a shortage at the varsity level. Young officials are turning away from the job because of an increasingly hostile atmosphere.

"Kids tell me I sometimes don't like how my coaches yell at me, I don't like how my parents yell at people," Goodheart said. "I just don't want to get yelled at. That's the hard part."

Goodheart got his start in officiating as a college kid wanting to make money. Then it grew into a passion. Athletics are important to communities, coaches, parents, and the athletes themselves. They are also important to the people trying to ensure fairness by enforcing the rules.

"Officials just want to go out and do the best job they can do," Goodheart said. "It's kind of like any job that anybody takes. No one takes a job and tries to fail at it."

There are many ways to boost the number of officials. Goodheart said female officials are an untapped resource, and organizations like KSHSAA offer plenty of training opportunities for new officials. Westerhaus said it's also about creating a positive culture so new officials stay in the game and get better.

"We need to continue to recruit, and encourage those that have a love for a sport or sports to give back by officiating," he said. "As schools, we also want to ensure that we make those early opportunities for officials as rewarding and as positive as possible. Fans, coaches, players, and administrators all play a part in providing a great atmosphere for not only our teams, but a positive, understanding atmosphere for beginning officials, so we encourage them to continue in their pursuit to provide a much-needed service to our educationally-based athletic programs.

Goodheart said more teams have been appreciative of officials lately. Something as small as a "thank you" from athletes and coaches goes a long way. That and the camaraderie of officials, he said, make the job worth doing."Probably every county in Kansas, I can think of somebody I know," he said. "It's the greatest fraternity or sorority I know of in Kansas."
