KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State Men's Basketball was picked third in both the MIAA Coaches and Media Preseason Polls, released on Tuesday (Oct. 11) at MIAA Basketball Media Day. The Tigers finished third in the MIAA regular season standings last year, only a game back of co-champions Northwest Missouri State and Central Oklahoma.

Northwest Missouri State and Central Oklahoma are picked first and second in each poll respectively. Northwest Missouri State is coming off a third-straight national title, finishing the year with 11 straight wins. Both NWMSU and UCO received all of the first-place votes in each poll.

The top five teams are the same in each poll, with Fort Hays State, Washburn, and Emporia State in order behind NWMSU and UCO. The top five of the polls reflect the regular season standings of 2021-22.

The Tigers are coming off a 23-6 record in 2021-22. If you take away losses against Northwest Missouri State and Central Oklahoma, the Tigers were 23-1. The Tigers return three starters from last year's team in Kaleb Hammeke, Bjarni Jonsson, and Gabe Pieschl. However, they lost All-MIAA selections Jared Vitztum and Nyjee Wright to graduation. Hammeke earned All-MIAA Second Team honors and averaged 14.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game. Jonsson was an MIAA All-Defensive Team selection and offensively contributed 4.6 points per game. Pieschl was also a strong defender for the Tigers and averaged 4.5 points per game. Both Jonsson and Pieschl averaged more than three rebounds per game.

The Tigers have four returners that contributed in 22 or more contests last year, which includes Elijah Nnanabu, Geoff Hamperian, Traejon Davis, and Gilbert Peters. Haggan Hilgendorf and Devin Walker also return after seeing limited action and Lucas Hammeke looks for his first action on the floor after redshirting the 2021-22 season. Newcomers looking to make their mark on this year's team include transfers Iyen Enaruna, Jaheim Holden, and Nathan Hawk, while Kyle Grill is the lone freshman newcomer.

The Tigers open their 2022-23 season in Weatherford, Oklahoma, November 11-12, against Southwestern Oklahoma and Arkansas Tech.

Tiger Men Picked Third in MIAA Preseason Polls

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The 38th annual Late Night in the Phog opened the Kansas men’s and women’s basketball season with a bang in front of a packed Allen Fieldhouse. The night featured a performance from DJ Diesel, various competitions, and a booming crowd.

The night began with a performance by the Kansas cheerleading squad. The team showed their skills and impressive tricks to bring the crowd to their feet. Shortly following the performance, the Kansas dance team joined them on the court for the Alma Mater and Rock Chalk Chant.

To really get the crowd involved and excited, the historical countdown video commenced. After an impact moment by Mitch Lightfoot and Chris Teahan, the hosts, Chris Miles and Katerina Kountouris, entered center stage with Big Jay and Baby Jay to continue the excitement.

Brothers Chris Teahan and Conner Teahan were brought to center court for the Teahan vs. Teahan challenge. The Teahan brothers battled to see who the better Teahan was in a three-point shootout. Connor Teahan was crowed champion of the brother battle.

It didn’t take long before the women’s basketball team was introduced to an electric Allen Fieldhouse. The crowd roared at the conclusion of the women’s basketball player introduction video and while each individual athlete was introduced to the Jayhawk fans.

Head coach Brandon Schneider addressed the crowd wearing a Lonnie Phelps Jr. jersey to show his appreciation for the football team and the excitement for the basketball season ahead.

“How about this incredible group of women on the court,” stated Schneider. “They are fighters. They are kind and they are going to do big things this season. They will be in the top 20. They will contend for a Big 12 title. Come this March, they will be prepared to make noise in the NCAA Tournament.”

The women’s team then transitioned to a scrimmage. They began their warmup before taking center court. Senior Taiyanna Jackson kicked off the scrimmage with a shot in the paint to get team white on the board. Junior Nadira Eltayeb followed up with a shot of her own. Team white took the lead 4-2 and never looked back. A turnover by Eltayeb and junior Chandler Prater allowed Team White to continue the stretch 8-4. A three-point jumper by junior Mia Vuksic was the first three-pointer made in the scrimmage. Senior Holly Kersgieter on team white forced a turnover and broke away from the pack for a layup. The 10 minutes ran out with the white team winning 19-10.

After the women’s scrimmage, men’s basketball head coach Bill Self spoke to the crowd about the high expectations he has for the Jayhawks this season. Soon the lights were dimmed, and the Jayhawk men’s team was welcomed on the floor.

“This night is to celebrate something fresh and new,” said Self. “At the same time, we’re the only school in America that gets to celebrate a national championship. Lawrence, Kansas has become the place to be. I am so excited about our five newcomers. They are all going to be really good players. It is so special that the last time we’ve celebrated like this is when some guy named Chambers made a shot from the three-point line. Before we turn the page on what was an extraordinary run, we turn all of our attention to what is going to happen in 2022-23.”

The KU band played while the men’s basketball team warmed up for their scrimmage to amp up Allen Fieldhouse.

The 15-minute clock began, and the Jayhawks took off. Team Blue won the tip off and scored a three-pointer from senior Michael Jankovich within the first 20 seconds. Team white tied up the scrimmage at five before a missed three-point jump shot gave team white an opportunity to score. KJ Adams Jr. was able to take the lead 7-5. With the game tied at seven, a turnover by sophomore Bobby Pettiford Jr. allowed number three, Dajuan Harris Jr. to score for team white. Soon enough team white was in the lead 11-7. Freshman Zuby Ejiofor on team blue dunked the ball to tie up the game at 11. With the clock winding down, team blue was in the lead 20-15 with six minutes left. Multiple turnovers by team white allowed team blue to maintain the lead. Freshman Ernest Udeh Jr. dunked the ball for team white to put them within three, 22-19.

At the final buzzer, Jalen Wilson shot a last minute three-pointer to take the scrimmage, 32-31.

The team teased the crowd before the $10,000 shot where two lucky crowd members can either shoot a half-court shot or pick someone from the men’s basketball staff or former KU player to take the shot for them.

The first fan was Emma Ryan, a sophomore from Prairie Village, Kansas. She chose Mario Chalmers to take the shot. On his first attempt, he unfortunately missed, however Bill Self was gracious enough to give her a second attempt. On his second shot, Chalmers drained it and won Ryan $10,000.

The second and final contestant was Yalone Woodruff, a junior from Henderson, Kentucky. He decided to take the shot himself. Woodruff had a few warmup shots before the $10,000 shot. Woodruff made the shot on his first attempt to win $10,000.

The first banner unveiling was a sight to be seen. A championship video played while Allen Fieldhouse anxiously waited for the curtain to fall, revealing the Big 12 Championship banner and Final Four banner. The fans roared as both curtains were removed.

Right after the banners were shown, the championship rings were handed out to the 2021-22 team.

It was the moment everyone had been waiting for, the unveiling of the 2022 national championship banner. Emotional videos played as all eyes were on banner. Slowly the curtain dropped, and Allen Fieldhouse erupted into cheers.

The history of Kansas basketball played on the videoboards to show fans what Kansas was all about.

To wrap up the night, Shaquille O’Neal, aka DJ Diesel, performed for the electric crowd in the Fieldhouse. Students and spectators chanted and danced to the upbeat music booming through the building.

Jayhawks Celebrate and Kickoff Basketball Season with Late Night in the Phog

KANSAS CITY, Mo.
(AP) — Von Miller had just finished talking about the importance of
the Buffalo Bills beating the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium
when he stopped in the hallway outside the visiting locker room and
grabbed Josh Allen in a hug.

The Bills
quarterback was masterful again on Sunday.

Allen threw for 329
yards and three touchdowns, including the go-ahead toss to Dawson
Knox with 1:04 left, and the Bills held on for a 24-20 victory to
exact a measure of revenge for their epic overtime loss to Patrick
Mahomes and the Chiefs in last year's playoffs.

“I've come to this
stadium a whole bunch of times. Been at this same podium. But I ain't
have many smiles,” Miller said. “It just feels so good to go out
there with my teammates, to work toward something like this and come
out on top.”

Stefon Diggs had 10
catches for 148 yards and a touchdown, and Gabe Davis also had a TD
catch after torching Kansas City for four of them in January, as the
Bills (5-1) won in the same place their season had ended the past two
seasons.

It was the
divisional round in January. It was the AFC championship game the
year before that.

“Nothing we did
last year translates to what we're doing this year,” Allen said
with a shrug. “What happened in the past, that's where it is. All
we can do is focus on the next one. Today was the next one.”

For a moment, it
looked as if it could be the next heartbreak.

The Chiefs got the
ball back after Knox's touchdown with plenty of time left. But after
Mahomes misfired on first down, Buffalo cornerback Taron Johnson
jumped his pass to Skyy Moore and picked him off with 51 seconds
left.

“It was a great
battle. You love these games,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “You
just don't want to be sitting on this end of it. But you love the
competition and the way the guys get after it.”

Mahomes finished
with 338 yards passing to go with two touchdowns and two
interceptions, including one in the end zone early in the game. JuJu
Smith-Schuster had five catches for 113 yards and a touchdown.

The down-to-the-wire
nail-biter was a fitting follow-up to their playoff game, when the
teams combined to score 25 points in the final two minutes of
regulation, and the Chiefs (4-2) won it on the first possession of
overtime.

The teams scored on
their final six possessions that night, and they picked up Sunday
right where they left off — with a small caveat. The Bills and
Chiefs both marched the length of the field in the first quarter,
chewing up defenses that looked downright lost, only to turn the ball
over when they reached the red zone.

Then the
similarities to their incredible divisional playoff game really
began.

Mahomes, at his
improvisational best, stayed alive long enough in a collapsing pocket
to find Smith-Schuster for a 42-yard TD reception. And after the
Bills blew another red-zone opportunity, when Allen threw incomplete
on fourth-and-goal at Kansas City's 3, Buffalo answered with a
touchdown drive in the final minute of the half.

Backed up to its own
1-yard line, Allen threw a dart to Davis for a first down. He hit
Knox, Diggs and Khalil Shakir on his next three throws, then had
Davis beat rookie cornerback Joshua Williams for a 34-yard TD catch.

The drive took 73
seconds, covered 96 yards and gave the Bills a 10-7 lead.

And just like
January, the Chiefs answered in seconds. Only instead of using 13 to
drive within range of Harrison Butker's 49-yard field goal to force
overtime, they had 16 seconds to move 27 yards and set up his
62-yarder to knot the game.

The back-and-forth
continued in the second half: Buffalo took the lead after Butker's
51-yard miss when Diggs hauled in a long TD catch, then Kansas City
drove 83 yards and Mecole Hardman tied it with his short reception.

When the Bills
failed on another fourth-down attempt, Butker added a 44-yarder to
give Kansas City a 20-17 lead.

But unlike January,
the Bills made the plays down the stretch.

Allen's scrambling,
hurdling run on their go-ahead drive got them in scoring position,
and his throw to Knox — a pinpoint dime along the sideline — gave
the Bills the lead. And when Johnson came up with his interception a
few minutes later, the Bills had their long-awaited revenge in Kansas
City.

“There were still
some bad memories from this place last year,” Knox said, “so it
was nice to wipe those from our minds.”

Bills safety Jordan
Poyer, who missed last week's game against Pittsburgh with a rib
injury, was medically cleared to play but not to fly. So, he drove
973 miles each way — about 15 hours in the car — to be on the
field Sunday. Poyer wound up making four tackles in the game.

Allen had a
career-best 13 straight completions before missing on his first throw
of the fourth quarter. ... Miller had two sacks, giving him 16 in 19
games against Kansas City. ... Chiefs DT Chris Jones, who had a
controversial roughing-the-passer penalty last week, tripped Allen
for a sack in the fourth quarter. ... Chiefs TE Travis Kelce had
eight grabs for 108 yards.

Lady Panthers take 2nd at WAC

EDMOND, Okla. – Fort Hays State got out to a fast start leading 10-0 after one quarter, but Central Oklahoma rallied to take a 16-10 lead by halftime and held on from there forward. The Bronchos won 35-23, moving to 5-2 on the season, while FHSU moved to 1-6.

The Tigers put together a 60-yard drive to open the game that resulted in a Parker Janky 32-yard field goal. Makel Williams then made a big play on defense with the Bronchos inside the FHSU 10 yardline by intercepting a pass and returning it 53 yards to set up another scoring drive for the Tigers. Jack Dawson found Manny Ramsey for a 30-yard touchdown pass, which gave the Tigers a 10-0 lead about eight minutes into the contest.

The Bronchos started to find their offensive footing by taking their next drive 66 yards over 15 plays to pick up a field goal on the first play of the second quarter. A penalty by the Tigers in UCO territory stalled out a drive and forced a punt, then UCO struck with its first big play of the game, an 80-yard touchdown pass from Stephon Brown to Oscar Hammond. The score was level at 10-10 with 9:46 remaining in the second quarter. UCO marched the ball 72 yards on its next drive and scored a touchdown from three yards out, but the extra point was missed and UCO went on to lead 16-10 at the half.

The Bronchos had to settle for a pair of field goals in the third quarter, pushing their lead to 22-10, but the Tigers jumped right back within striking distance when Dawson found Ramsey again from 24 yards out for another touchdown. UCO led 22-17 heading into the fourth quarter.

Fort Hays State was driving deep in UCO territory once again right at the start of the fourth quarter, but UCO put a halt to the momentum by tipping a Jack Dawson pass straight up in the air that was intercepted and returned all the way to the endzone. A block in the back on the return negated the touchdown, but UCO eventually cashed in on the turnover with a 23-yard touchdown pass after its drive started at the FHSU 48. The Bronchos had the margin back out to a two-score game at 28-17 after another missed extra point, and it proved too much for the Tigers to overcome. UCO scored one more touchdown before a late touchdown by the Tigers on an Adrian Soto two-yard run brought the eventual final margin to 12.

Ramsey finished the game with 64 receiving yards to go with his two touchdowns. He now has 20 receiving touchdowns in his career at FHSU, moving into a tie for fourth in school history. Soto finished with 89 rushing yards for the Tigers. Dawson and Ethan Forrester combined for 178 passing yards in the game, while Leyton Cure completed one pass as well for 20 yards. Defensively, linebackers Makel Williams and Layke Heimerman led the Tigers in tackles with nine and eight respectively.

Brown finished the game with 381 passing yards for the Bronchos, completing 26-of-33 attempts. Hammond was his top receiver with 148 yards on five catches. Nasir Kemper led UCO in rushing with 52 yards. Jason Harris and Connor Johnson each had seven tackles on defense for UCO. Noah West had the key interception early in the fourth quarter that led to UCO restoring its two-score lead.

The Tigers will host Central Missouri next Saturday (Oct. 22) in Hays at 1 p.m.

A 54th minute goal proved to be the difference maker Saturday in El Dorado as the 17th ranked Barton Community College women's soccer team lost 1-0 at 6th ranked Butler Community College.

The Cougars had multiple opportunities to get on the board, outshooting Butler 10-2 in the first half including 5-2 on frame. The Grizzlies played more aggressive early in second half play to reverse the shot advantage to outpace Barton 13-9 on the launches.

Butler got the game winner 8:30 into the final half, keeping possession off a non-handball call the produced nifty passing slicing through the Barton defense with Kenzee Godwin's through ball being one-touched by Brooklyn Hunter to the upper-90 far post.

Despite surrendering the goal without a prayer to deflect the perfect shot, Nia Baker played perhaps one of her best games between the pipes saving eight of the nine shots faced as the hard luck loss dropped her season record to 9-3.

Barton will have the week off from competition in preparation of its final two regular season games, both with conference title implications on the line being played at the Cougar Soccer Complex. Saturday at 1:00 p.m. the Cougars welcome 15th ranked Hutchinson Community College in looking to avenge an earlier 2-0 defeat followed by a Tuesday 3:00 p.m. kick hosting Johnson County Community College in the teams' lone meeting of the year.

Barton women's soccer drops 1-0 national ranked battle at Butler

The Barton Community College volleyball team stepped out of conference play this weekend with split results competing in the Cardinal Classic hosted by Mineral Area College in Park Hills, Missouri.

Barton is now 16-10 on the season, returning to conference play on Wednesday with a 6:30 p.m. first serve at nationally receiving votes Butler Community College.

The Cougars opened up play on Friday taking on 3rd ranked Indian Hills Community College, dropping the first set 25-10 but bouncing back to even the match with a 25-23 win. The Indians flexed in the third 25-7 as the Cougars hit for negative percentage for the second time in the match before falling short in the fourth 25-17.

Molly Norris led the net play with six kills on a .400 attack and two blocks, Beatriz Rissi put up three walls of rejection, and Clara Lindstrom patrolling the back line with 18 digs. Mya Maxwell and Bennie Horsch shared setting duties in the 6-2 offense putting up 13 and 7 assists respectively.  Ella Rumford, who had a career most 28 attacks in the match, also set a personal best defensively with 7 digs.

Getting about a five hour break, Barton returned to the court and produced a .282 attack in a resounding sweep over St. Louis Community College 25-14, 25-9, and 26-24.

Norris again led with 8 kills on a .500 attack and 3 blocks, including one of the team's three solo blocks as Jada Davis and setter Iris Oosterbaan had the other. Darby Smith and Tasiah Nunnery each had 7 kills as Jaden Boden struck for a .667 attack with 6 kills on 9 attempts. Oosterbaan led the 5-1 attack with 26 assists and added 7 digs while Lindstrom and Nunnery led the team with 15 digs each.

Scheduled for consecutive matches on Saturday, the Cougars had leads mid-sets in its first match against the 20th ranked hosts but the Cardinals prevailed in four by 25-17, 25-21, 23-25, and 25-19 scores.

Barton played well enough for the victory with a .191 attack but costly errors doomed the Cougars down the stretch. Smith matched her career high with 11 kills, being joined in team honors by Norris' 11 kills by hitting for .435 with two blocks while also just missing her second collegiate double-double with 9 digs. Like Smith, Horsch also recorded a career high in kills, recording 4 on a .167 attack in 12 swings. Oosterbaan and Maxwell shared setter duties in the tune of 23 and 15 assists respectively as Lindstrom led the defensive backline with 25 digs with Rissi and Boden leading the net crew in putting up five and four blockades respectively.

Returning to the court 30 minutes later, the Cougars put together its season's second best attack of .315 to dispatch Vincennes University in five sets. Barton outscored the Trailblazers 6-1 down the stretch for a 25-19 win but Vincennes flipped the script in the second fighting off four set points with a 6-0 closeout to win 26-24 then rattled off the final three points in taking a a 2-1 match lead on a 25-22 victory. With their backs to the wall, Barton closed out the fourth like they did in the first, winning six of the last seven for a 25-17 victory forcing a decisive set. The Cougars broke a 6-all tie with three straight, not allowing the Trailblazers any closer than two before sticking a bow on the weekend with the final four points of the 15-9 victory.

Theo Leveque led the Barton Community College men's Cross Country team in their final tune up before the postseason Friday morning at the Ollie Isom Invitational held in El Dorado, KS at the El Dorado Disc Golf Course.

Leveque paced the four pack of Cougars with a runner-up finish in the field of 57 participants featuring a majority of competitors from the KJCCC conference. Competing for the first time in 20 days, the freshman displayed a solid effort clocking a new personal best 25:48.51 shaving 21-seconds off his previous best stoppage of 26:09.68 that came at the ESU Invitational.

Fabian Campbell notched the second best finish for Barton earning a top-20 performance timing the 19th fastest time of 28:33.31.

Brandon Nguyen led the remaining freshman runners with a 32nd finish of 29:54.40 while Jarron King crossed the line eighth spots back in 40th at 31:28.20.

Barton's next action comes in the Region VI Cross Country Championships, which will be held Friday, October 28 at 10:00 a.m. from Fun Valley in Hutchinson, KS.

Leveque's runner-up finish highlights Barton Men's Cross Country at Ollie Isom Invitational

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Dillon Gabriel looked all healed up.

The Oklahoma quarterback passed for 403 yards and two touchdowns in his first game back after a concussion, and the Sooners defeated No. 19 Kansas 52-42 on Saturday to end their three-game losing streak.

Gabriel was injured in the second quarter of Oklahoma's loss to TCU on October 1, and the team's offense had sputtered in nearly seven quarters without him heading into the Kansas game. But a week after the Sooners were held to 195 yards against Texas, Oklahoma (4-3, 1-3 Big 12) exploded for 701 yards against the Jayhawks.

Gabriel had been in concussion protocol, but he passed tests during the week, clearing the way for him to play.

“I’m grateful for every opportunity I step out there because I know this game is aggressive,” he said.

Gabriel also ran 10 times for 37 yards and a touchdown, often sliding well before Kansas defenders had a chance to hit him.

“It's football,” he said. “I'm going to get hit. Just being smart. Trying to protect myself, but also not taking any unnecessary hits.”

Kansas had been one of the nation's darlings so far this season, surprising experts by winning five straight games to start the season and pushing TCU before losing 34-27 the previous week.

But Eric Gray ran for 176 yards, Marvin Mims had a career-high nine catches for 106 yards and Brayden Willis had five catches for a career-best 102 yards for the Sooners, who relieved some of the pressure that had been building for first-year coach Brent Venables.

It was Oklahoma’s 18th straight win over Kansas, with all the victories coming by double digits. The Sooners haven’t lost to the Jayhawks since 1997.

“I love seeing our guys in victory formation there at the end,” Venables said. “It was a good, hard fought win, dragging ourselves off the mat and getting back on the saddle.”

Filling in for the injured Jalon Daniels (shoulder), Jason Bean passed for 265 yards and four touchdowns for Kansas. Daniels was hurt in the loss to TCU.

Lawrence Arnold had 113 yards and two touchdowns receiving and Mason Fairchild had 106 yards and caught two touchdown passes for Kansas. The Jayhawks (5-2, 2-2) lost their second straight and missed out on the chance to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2008.

Gabriel completed 21 of 29 passes for 304 yards in the first half to help the Sooners take a 35-21 lead. The Sooners’ 487 yards in the first half were the second-most gained in a half in school history, trailing the 507 gained in the first half against Missouri in 1986.

“They came out clicking on all cylinders,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. “They played very well, very aggressive. I think we were on our heels most of the day. It was like they were playing downhill.”

Gray had 124 yards rushing in the first half, eclipsing his previous high as a Sooner before the break. The Sooners kept the Jayhawks at bay in the second half, controlling the ball for more than 17 minutes.

“Their backs were to the wall a little bit in this situation, and they came out and played extremely well,” Leipold said. “And we didn’t quite match that. And we've got to find a way if we want to be that type of team, that we can do that.”

Kansas: If not for three Oklahoma turnovers and a goal-line stand by the Jayhawks on the final play of the second quarter, the Sooners would have done even more damage.

Oklahoma: The Sooners showed they could run the ball and chew up the clock if necessary. They ran for 298 yards and had the advantage in time of possession for the first time this season.

Even though Oklahoma has the reputation and was favored, Kansas lost to an unranked team and could drop out of the Top 25.

Oklahoma honored running back Prentice Gautt, the first Black scholarship football player at the school, by wearing a “Unity” uniform.

Gautt starred on coach Bud Wilkinson’s teams from 1957 to 1959. He was an All-Big Eight Conference selection twice and was an Academic All-American in 1958.

The uniform, designed by a group of the school’s athletes, featured dark gray jerseys, pants and helmets with crimson trim and lettering. It had the word “TOGETHER” sewn on the collar, the word “UNITY” on the back-of-the-jersey nameplate and an outline of the state of Oklahoma on the sleeves.

Kansas cornerback Cobee Bryant left the game after suffering an injury to his left ankle in the closing seconds of the first half.

Bryant left on a cart and received a standing ovation from the crowd. Leipold said it is a “wait-and-see” situation.

The Barton Community College women's cross country team returned to the course Friday morning competing in its' final regular season meet at the Ollie Isom Invitational held in El Dorado, KS.

Competing for the first time in 20 days and for just the second time on a 5K race, sophomore&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/herrera_karina_ozuf" target="_blank">Karina Herrera</a>&nbsp;led the Cougars earning a 30th place finish in the field of 53 KJCCC competitors clocking a 22:08.41.

<a href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/schultz_koe_w0bp" target="_blank">Koe Schultz</a>&nbsp;crossed the line 10-spots back timing a 23:24.89 stoppage earning a 40th placing edging out&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wxc/2022-23/bios/behring_abigail_ynri" target="_blank">Abigail Behring</a>'s 42nd finish and new personal best time of 23:28.28.

Another season of prep hoops is just around the corner. Ellinwood's Brit Dutton is ending some of the drama early. Earlier this week, the senior made a verbal commitment to continue his basketball career next season at The University of Illinois-Springfield (UIS).

Dutton learned of the school - located eight hours away from home and three hours from Chicago - from Ellinwood High School coach Derek Joiner, who coached with current UIS coach Matt Brock at Pittsburg State. Brock eventually asked Dutton to make an official visit, and Dutton liked what he saw.

"All the coaches were real nice," he said. "I feel like they all are good coaches and know what they're doing. I like the team, like the facilities, the school. It seems like a real nice area."

The Prairie Stars finished at 12-17 last year in Brock's fourth season with the program. This year's squad will be relatively young with just three seniors, but Dutton is still ready to battle for a starting spot next year.

"It's college basketball, and it's the next-highest level you can go," he said. "I'm still able to play basketball, which is ultimately what I wanted to do."

But first things first, Dutton still has a season left at Ellinwood. The Eagles finished last year at 20-3, and are 56-13 in Dutton's first three seasons. But the team has yet to make it to the state tournament

"Our expectation every year has been to make it to state," Dutton said. "Hopefully this year we're able to make it happen. We're all going to work hard, have to be leaders, and just get it done this year."

Last February, Dutton surpassed 1,400 career points at Ellinwood to break the school's previous scoring record set in 1986. He scored 43 points in a win against Ness City as a sophomore, then set the school's individual-game record with a 48-point night last December. He scored 63 points in the first two games of his junior year to become just the third EHS player to reach 1,000 career points. Heading into his final season, Dutton has four of Ellinwood's top-five single-game scoring performances.

"We knew as Brit was growing up he was going to have an impact on our program," Joiner said. "We were also fortunate to have other good players, along with quality parents, to pair with him. We've been ranked all three of his first seasons, the No. 1 seed in substate all three years, and currently on something like a 20-game league winning streak.

"I would say our program has faired well during his time here so far. It's hard to believe it's his last season already. I'm sure the league opponents don't feel that way. They probably feel like he's been here forever because he's had an impact from his freshman year on."

Last season Dutton paced the Eagles at 24.4 points and 2.5 steals a night. His 3.6 assists a game were second on the team but included some highlight-worthy gems. Dutton shot 54 percent from the floor, including 40 percent from behind the arc, and he was an 80-percent shooter from the foul stripe.

That complete game, complete with a good handle, is why Joiner thinks Dutton has what it takes to succeed at the next level.

"The college game and the game of basketball is valuing skill more and more, and Brit is flush with skill," Joiner said. "Brit has attributes that translate well to the next level. Number one, Brit can really shoot. He has the ballhandling skills to deal with the athletic ability of the next level. 

"What I think sets him apart from a lot of high school kids when it comes to a college skill is Brit's ability to finish 10 feet and in. He can finish with either hand. He can use the floater. He can use the pull-up. He can jump off either leg. So, Brit is more equipped than most to deal with the 6-8 kids on the help side that he will see at the collegiate level. Brit can also play the one or the two so that versatility is a plus for him."

Dutton is the son of Meredith Joiner and Jeremy Dutton. The Eagles open the 2022-23 high school season on Dec. 2 with a home game against LaCrosse.

Ellinwood standout Dutton to continue basketball career at Illinois-Springfield

The 6th ranked Barton Community College men's soccer team jumped out to a three goal halftime lead Friday afternoon before settling for a 4-2 home victory over the reserve squad of Sterling College.

Closing out non-conference play, the Cougars improve to 14-3-0 heading into their regular season finale that comes 10-days from now in hosting 11th ranked Johnson County Community College in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff from the Cougar Soccer Complex.

14:38 in Samuel Joerg carried in a loose ball from mid-field placing a flawless ball between the Warrior defensive line setting up Yuki Minari's third tally of the season with a backside 1-v-1 far post chip over the outstretched right hand of Sterling keeper Lewis Cross giving Barton the 1-0 advantage.

Nearly 4-minutes later Arthur Seelig-Orth doubled the Cougar advantage scheming a move on the Sterling defender forming a perfectly shaped upper-90 far post rocket from 22-yards outside the left side of the 18' for his first tally of the season.

The Warriors trimmed the deficit in half 5:16 later as an initial shot fought off by Victor Goscinski's hands fashioned a backside Daniel Stone empty net boot.

Barton would close the first half scoring with just 4:50 left, as Calixtro Gutierrez produced his fifth goal of the season hammering home a far post 1-v-1 dart from just outside the 6' created off Arthur Prado's one touch through ball.

Bruce Sutter, a Hall of Fame reliever and the 1979 Cy Young winner, has died. He was 69.

Sutter
 was recently diagnosed with cancer and died Thursday night in hospice, 
surrounded by his family, one of Sutter's three sons, Chad, told The 
Associated Press. The Baseball Hall of Fame said Bruce Sutter died in 
Cartersville, Georgia.

“All our father ever wanted to be 
remembered as was being a great teammate, but he was so much more than 
that,” the Sutter family said in a statement Friday. “He was also a 
great husband to our mother for 50 (years), he was a great father and 
grandfather and he was a great friend. His love and passion for the game
 of baseball can only be surpassed by his love and passion for his 
family.”

Sutter is considered one of the first pitchers to throw a
 split-finger fastball. The right-hander played 12 seasons in the major 
leagues, was a six-time All-Star and ended up with 300 saves over his 
career.

 was the first pitcher to reach the Hall of Fame without starting a 
game, and he was one of the key figures who foreshadowed how the use of 
relievers would evolve,” Manfred said in a statement. “Bruce will be 
remembered as one of the best pitchers in the histories of two of our 
most historic franchises.”Sutter debuted with the Chicago Cubs in
 1976. The reliever won the Cy Young in 1979 in a season where he had 37
 saves, 2.22 ERA and 110 strikeouts.He joined the St. Louis 
Cardinals and played with them from 1981 to 1984. There, he won a World 
Series in 1982, ending Game 7 against the Brewers with a strikeout.“Being
 a St Louis Cardinal was an honor he cherished deeply,” the Sutter 
family's statement said. “To the Cardinals, his teammates and most 
importantly to the greatest fans in all of sports, we thank you for all 
of the love and support over the years.”His last save, No. 300, came with the Atlanta Braves in 1988. Sutter was <a href="https://baseballhall.org/hall-of-famers/sutter-bruce">inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006</a>.“Bruce
 was a fan-favorite during his years in St. Louis and in the years to 
follow, and he will always be remembered for his 1982 World Series 
clinching save and signature split-fingered pitch," Cardinals owner and 
CEO Bill DeWitt Jr. said in a statement. "He was a true pioneer in the 
game, changing the role of the late inning reliever.”Sutter was 
born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in January 1953. The Baseball Hall of 
Fame said in a release that he learned the split-finger fastball from a 
Cubs minor-league pitching instructor while recovering from surgery on 
his right elbow.The Cardinals said Sutter is survived by his wife, three sons, a daughter-in-law and six grandkids.“I
 feel like a brother passed away,” Hall of Famer Jim Kaat said. “I knew 
Bruce deeper than just about any other teammate. We spent a lot of time 
together, and as happens when your careers end, you go your separate 
ways. But we stayed in touch and considered each other great friends."
