MANHATTAN, Kan. – Thanks to a career-high 11 tackles in Kansas State's 10-9 victory at Iowa State, senior safety Josh Hayes has been named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.

Hayes was the leading tackler for a stifling defense that allowed its fewest points since last year's season opener against Stanford (7), the fewest in a Big 12 game since the 2018 Texas Tech contest (6) and the fewest in a Big 12 road contest since the 2016 TCU game (6).

K-State surrendered just 276 total yards to the Cyclones, including just 78 rushing yards. It was the fewest rushing yards allowed since West Virginia gained 74 yards last season and the fewest in a Big 12 road game since Baylor had 71 yards in 2020.

A product of Lakeland, Florida, Hayes also had a five-yard tackle for loss and a pass breakup at Iowa State. Hayes, who came to K-State as a transfer from Virginia, ranks third on the team in both tackles (33) and tackles for loss (4.5). A cornerback through his entire collegiate career, he moved to free safety this year and is closing in on posting his career-best season for tackles (59 in 2019), while he already has more tackles for loss than the previous four years of his career combined (3.5).

Hayes' accolade marks the third-straight week a Wildcat has been honored by the conference and the sixth time this season. Following K-State's win over Texas Tech, Khalid Duke was the defensive player of the week and Adrian Martinez was the newcomer of the week. Martinez was also named the offensive player of the week and Kobe Savage was the newcomer after the Wildcats' victory at Oklahoma, and Phillip Brooks was the special teams player of the week following the Missouri game.

Ranked in the top 20 in both the Associated Press Top 25 (No. 17) and AFCA Coaches Poll (No. 16), K-State enjoys its bye week prior to traveling to Fort Worth, Texas to face No. 13 TCU on Oct. 22. The game at Amon G. Carter Stadium will kick off at 7 p.m. and be televised by either FOX or FS1.

NEW YORK (AP) —
Joe Musgrove brushed off chants of “Cheater!” after a bizarre
spot check by umpires on the mound, pitching his hometown San Diego
Padres into the next round of the playoffs with seven innings of
one-hit ball in a 6-0 victory over the New York Mets. Trent Grisham
hit an RBI single and made a terrific catch in center field that
helped the Padres take the best-of-three National League wild-card
series two games to one. Austin Nola and Juan Soto each had a two-run
single. San Diego advanced to face the top-seeded Los Angeles Dodgers
in a best-of-five Division Series beginning Tuesday.

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP)
— The Las Vegas Raiders defense has allowed 13 touchdowns this
season, seven coming through the air. And five of them were thrown by
AFC West rivals Justin Herbert of the Chargers and Denver’s Russell
Wilson. Monday night the Raiders (1-3) face the division’s best
quarterback in Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes, who will provide
their secondary its stiffest test of the season. With the Chiefs
(3-1) and Mahomes, the Raiders are presented with numerous issues
that are sure to challenge a secondary that has the slimmest margin
for errors. Mahomes, who ranks seventh in the league with 1,106 yards
passing, is tied for first with 11 passing touchdowns, alongside
Detroit’s Jared Goff and Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson.

BALTIMORE (AP) —
Justin Tucker kicked a 43-yard field goal on the final play to lift
the Baltimore Ravens over the Cincinnati Bengals 19-17 and into sole
possession of first place in the AFC North. Tucker also made a
58-yard kick in the third quarter. The Ravens fell behind 17-16 on
Joe Burrow’s 1-yard sneak with 1:58 remaining, but they could feel
confident because they only needed a field goal. Tucker’s
game-winner extended his streak to 61 straight successful field goals
in the fourth quarter and overtime. Baltimore squandered a 10-point
lead but recovered as Cincinnati fell to 2-3. The Ravens are 3-2.

Georgia has taken back the top spot in The Associated Press college
football poll from Alabama. The Crimson Tide slid to No. 3. The
Bulldogs received 32 first-place votes and 1,535 points in the Top 25
to easily reclaim No. 1 on Sunday after being just two points behind
Alabama for the No. 2 spot last week. Georgia thumped Auburn 42-10 on
Saturday. The Tide escaped an upset bid at home by Texas A&amp;M with

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Tom Kim has won the Shriners Children's Open in Las Vegas. That makes him the first player since Tiger Woods in 1996 with two PGA Tour victories before turning 21. But he got plenty of help from Patrick Cantlay. They were tied for the lead on the 18th hole when Cantlay went into a desert bush, into the pond and made triple bogey. Kim shot 67 and completed a bogey-free week at the TPC Summerlin. He moves to No. 15 in the world and becomes the highest-ranked Asian-born player in golf. Kim also won the Wyndham Championship in August.

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Christopher Bell saved his title chances with an overtime win Sunday on the road course at Charlotte Motor Speedway in a stunning finish that knocked reigning NASCAR champion Kyle Larson from the playoffs. Bell entered the race 11th in the standings with four drivers set to be eliminated as NASCAR’s playoff field was trimmed to eight. He took the lead in overtime and drove away as all the drama was further in the field for the final transfer spot into the round of eight. Chase Briscoe bulldozed his way to a ninth-place finish to knock Larson out of the playoffs by two points. Also eliminated were Daytona 500 winner Austin Cindric, Daniel Suarez and Larson's teammate, Alex Bowman.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — There was a time in Travis Kelce's career that the Kansas City Chiefs tight end could simply line up against a linebacker, or even a safety, and know that his speed and agility would be able to get him open downfield.

Kelce turned 33 this week, though, and those days are slowly slipping away. Yet what he has lost in athleticism Kelce has made up for in experience. You'll see him slowly going in motion, or quickly moving across the formation, setting defenders up even before the snap and giving him just that extra bit of space to allow him to continually make plays.

“He's just smarter as a player,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “That's the biggest thing. He knows how to get himself open. He knows how to use other people and other parts of the concept to get himself open. And he's smart about how he blocks, how he can pin guys and get us in the right position. I think he's just continued to evolve.”

He is once again tops among NFL tight ends, too, with 26 catches for 322 yards and three touchdowns.

It might be a stretch to say that Kelce, who along with the Chiefs play the Raiders on Monday night, has revolutionized the tight end position. That would be slighting those who came before him: Ozzie Newsome, Dave Casper and Keith Jackson in the day, and Tony Gonzalez, Jason Witten and Rob Gronkowski in more recent years.

But it's safe to say that Kelce has made what was long considered a decidedly unsexy position a lot more appealing, and in turn helped to make players such as Raiders tight end Darren Waller high-priced assets for their teams.

Waller has 16 catches for 175 yards and three scores heading into Monday night's game in Kansas City.

Make no mistake: Kelce still does plenty of down-in-the-dirt blocking, the stuff often overlooked and underappreciated, but that helped Kansas City run for nearly 200 yards in last week's 41-31 win at Tampa Bay. But he also makes plenty of those spectacular catches and long, loping downfield runs that makes Kelce a regular on the highlight reels.

“Everybody kind of giggles and laughs when you see (Mahomes) throw an underhand pass to a fullback or a shovel pass, or Kelce lines up at quarterback in the red zone and then runs the ball in, or runs an option, or shovel pass — whatever it is,” Las Vegas coach Josh McDaniels said.

“What's always impressed me is how precise they are and how detailed they are when they do those things. Look, players like to run things that are run. They enjoy that.”

Nobody seems to enjoy it more than Kelce, who could sometimes come off as surly early in his career, especially when things weren't going his way. But while he still has a fiercely competitive streak, Kelce has matured as he aged, and what the Chiefs have now is a locker room leader who is just as good with fans and reporters as his teammates.

One that continues to etch his name in record books, too.

Kelce has caught a pass in 130 consecutive games, one behind Gonzalez for the second-longest streak in franchise history and the second-longest active streak behind DeAndre Hopkins in the NFL. Kelce has 730 catches in all, putting him within shouting distance of Witten's 806 for the most among tight ends over their first 10 seasons in the NFL.

Last week against the Buccaneers, Kelce had nine catches for 92 yards and a score, giving him 9,328 yards for his career and moving him past Gronkowski for fifth most among NFL tight ends.

Next on the list is Shannon Sharpe with 10,060, with Antonio Gates, Witten and Gonzalez the only others ahead of him.

What about touchdowns? Kelce has 63 of those, one behind Jamaal Charles for fourth on the Chiefs' career list.

It's not as if his production has tapered with age, either.

The pride of Westlake, Ohio, finished with 92 catches for 1,125 yards and nine touchdowns last season, his sixth straight eclipsing 1,000 yards.

And considering Kelce has three more years left on his contract after this one, and he insists that he plans to play it to completion or beyond, there is no reason to think more records won't fall.

“He is getting up there,” Mahomes admitted. I'm going to try to keep him here as long as possible. I promise you. He's not taking any screens like, 80 yards anymore, I don't think. But he's still going to make some production on the field."

Chiefs' Travis Kelce keeps evolving along with TE position


LAWRENCE — The University of
Kansas is moving forward with a transformational development project
to create a north gateway to campus that includes new multi-use space
and reimagined Kansas Football facilities.


The project will transform the
area near the intersection of 11th and Mississippi streets with new
facilities that may include a mix of conference and entertainment
space, retail and other functions that drive regional economic growth
and generate revenue for academic programming.


The project includes major
upgrades to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium – one of the
nation’s oldest football venues – to create a world-class
experience for fans while providing Kansas Football the facilities it
needs to compete at the highest level, as well as renovations to the
Anderson Family Football Complex.


KU has chosen HNTB, a global
leader in multi-purpose entertainment venue design, as the lead
architect, in partnership with Lawrence-based Multistudio. KU has
also retained Nations Group, a national owner’s representative firm
specializing in university athletics venues and mixed-use facilities.
The firms will help KU develop more specific plans, timelines and
cost estimates in the weeks ahead.


“The intersection near 11th
and Mississippi streets is a primary campus entrance for prospective
students, alumni and guests who are touring KU and visiting David
Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium,” said Chancellor Douglas A. Girod.
“For these reasons, it’s the ideal location to develop a new
gateway with multi-use facilities to better serve these audiences,
generate revenue for academic programming, drive economic growth in
the region, and reimagine our football facilities.”


The project will begin with
renovations to Anderson Family Football Complex, as well as site
preparation work related to storm water, sanitation, Wi-Fi
availability and electrical system upgrades, in the first half of
2023. KU will select a construction manager in the weeks ahead.


The project will be funded
primarily with private donations, economic development funds, premium
seating sales in the stadium, and future development opportunities
that will be created on the site.

REVENUE-GENERATING
POTENTIAL AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT


KU leaders in recent years
have pursued strategies to generate revenue for academic programming
and spur regional economic growth by hosting conferences and events
on campus. Development of this project positions KU to pursue these
goals in a way that benefits the university, the city of Lawrence and
the broader region.


KU has commissioned an
economic impact study to analyze the potential uses of mixed-use
space that will be developed as part of the project. Additionally,
the university will soon begin the process of selecting a project
developer to help formulate a vision for how the mixed-use facilities
in and around the reimagined football stadium could be used.


Goals for a reimagined David
Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium include upgrades to the in-game
experience such as seating bowl design with improved sightlines that
increase fan comfort and bring fans closer to the field; expanded
concessions, restrooms and accessible seating locations; improved
concourse circulation; and new premium amenities such as club seats,
loge seats and ledge suites. Stadium design will include multi-use
spaces to augment any convention and conference facilities that may
be part of the project. Kansas Athletics is partnering with Elevate
Sports Ventures to conduct fan focus groups to solicit feedback on
what fans want in a reimagined stadium. Additionally, Elevate
recently completed a survey to understand what seating options and
amenities are most important to fans.


“This project is unmatched
in its vision to benefit a broad range of KU constituents while
signaling a new era for Kansas Football,” said Travis Goff,
director of athletics. “Once complete, this project will ensure our
football program has the facilities it needs to compete at the
highest level and provide the best-possible game day experience for

LAWRENCE — The University of
Kansas is moving forward with a transformational development project
to create a north gateway to campus that includes new multi-use space
and reimagined Kansas Football facilities.
The project will transform the
area near the intersection of 11th and Mississippi streets with new
facilities that may include a mix of conference and entertainment
space, retail and other functions that drive regional economic growth
and generate revenue for academic programming.
The project includes major
upgrades to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium – one of the
nation’s oldest football venues – to create a world-class
experience for fans while providing Kansas Football the facilities it
needs to compete at the highest level, as well as renovations to the
Anderson Family Football Complex.
KU has chosen HNTB, a global
leader in multi-purpose entertainment venue design, as the lead
architect, in partnership with Lawrence-based Multistudio. KU has
also retained Nations Group, a national owner’s representative firm
specializing in university athletics venues and mixed-use facilities.
The firms will help KU develop more specific plans, timelines and
cost estimates in the weeks ahead.
“The intersection near 11th
and Mississippi streets is a primary campus entrance for prospective
students, alumni and guests who are touring KU and visiting David
Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium,” said Chancellor Douglas A. Girod.
“For these reasons, it’s the ideal location to develop a new
gateway with multi-use facilities to better serve these audiences,
generate revenue for academic programming, drive economic growth in
the region, and reimagine our football facilities.”
The project will begin with
renovations to Anderson Family Football Complex, as well as site
preparation work related to storm water, sanitation, Wi-Fi
availability and electrical system upgrades, in the first half of
2023. KU will select a construction manager in the weeks ahead.
The project will be funded
primarily with private donations, economic development funds, premium
seating sales in the stadium, and future development opportunities
that will be created on the site.REVENUE-GENERATING
POTENTIAL AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
KU leaders in recent years
have pursued strategies to generate revenue for academic programming
and spur regional economic growth by hosting conferences and events
on campus. Development of this project positions KU to pursue these
goals in a way that benefits the university, the city of Lawrence and
the broader region.
KU has commissioned an
economic impact study to analyze the potential uses of mixed-use
space that will be developed as part of the project. Additionally,
the university will soon begin the process of selecting a project
developer to help formulate a vision for how the mixed-use facilities
in and around the reimagined football stadium could be used.KANSAS

Goals for a reimagined David
Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium include upgrades to the in-game
experience such as seating bowl design with improved sightlines that
increase fan comfort and bring fans closer to the field; expanded
concessions, restrooms and accessible seating locations; improved
concourse circulation; and new premium amenities such as club seats,
loge seats and ledge suites. Stadium design will include multi-use
spaces to augment any convention and conference facilities that may
be part of the project. Kansas Athletics is partnering with Elevate
Sports Ventures to conduct fan focus groups to solicit feedback on
what fans want in a reimagined stadium. Additionally, Elevate
recently completed a survey to understand what seating options and
amenities are most important to fans.

signaling a new era for Kansas Football,” said Travis Goff,

football program has the facilities it needs to compete at the

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State fell by a score of 45-14 to Washburn on Saturday (Oct. 8) in the annual Homecoming game at Lewis Field Stadium. The Ichabods improved to 4-2 overall, while FHSU moved to 1-5.

Washburn seized momentum early in the game with a 44-yard touchdown pass followed shortly after by a blocked punt returned for a touchdown. The Ichabods led 14-0 after the first quarter. They added a one-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter to extend the lead to 21-0. The Tigers finally snapped the scoring run when Jack Dawson ran the ball in from six yards out at 7:20 in the second quarter. Washburn went on to add a 47-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to lead 24-7 at the break.

The Ichabods put the game away by scoring three unanswered touchdowns in the third quarter to build a 45-7 lead. The Tigers capped the scoring in the game when Dawson found Manny Ramsey on a 25-yard touchdown pass, producing the eventual final of 45-14.

Dawson threw for 234 yards, completing 17-of-25 passes. Ramsey had four catches for 85 yards. Clay Robinson led the Tigers in rushing yards with 46 on four carries. Layke Heimerman and Daniel Howard led the Tiger defense in tackles with nine each.

Kellen Simoncic threw for 280 yards, completing 18-of-26 attempts for the Ichabods. Taylon Peters produced 73 rushing yards on 10 carries. Peters also led the Ichabods in receiving yards with 71 to finish with 144 all-purpose yards. Grant Bruner led WU in tackles with eight.

Barton Men and Women grab wins over Dodge

AMES, Iowa (AP) — A little craziness helped No. 20 Kansas State survive an upset bid by Iowa State, 10-9, on Saturday night.

Adrian Martinez passed for 246 yards and rushed for 77, helping the Wildcats improve to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the Big 12.

Chris Tennant kicked a 30-yard field goal with 7:14 left in the fourth quarter to provide the winning margin.

“Playing football is crazy,” Kansas State receiver Phillip Brooks said. “You never know when your opportunity is.”

Brooks finished with 119 yards on four receptions, and Malik Knowles made five catches for 108.

The Kansas State duo also accounted for two of the game's defining plays.

The Wildcats scored when Martinez ducked under a potential sack, then heaved the ball to a leaping Brooks, who maintained his balance and raced downfield for an 81-yard touchdown.

“Going into the route, I got knocked over,” Brooks said. “I caught it, turned and got hit. I was making sure I stayed up.”

In the second quarter, Martinez found Malik Knowles for a 68-yard gain. But Knowles fumbled before crossing the goal line. Iowa State's Anthony Johnson punched the ball out and Colby Reeder recovered in the end zone.

“Their kid made a great play on Malik,” Wildcats coach Chris Klieman said. “He made a phenomenal play. Touchdowns and points were going to be at a premium, with two good defenses.”

Martinez finished 12-of-19 passing and rushed 19 times.

“For him, the big key was not to turn the ball over,” Klieman said. “Boy, he doesn't panic. He does such a good job of being calm and relaxed.”

The Cyclone (3-3, 0-3) have scored just one touchdown in their last 20 possessions.

“I thought we had a good plan coming in,” Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. “Obviously, the inconsistency of that plan continues to show up.”

The loss snapped Iowa State's six-game home winning streak in night games. A crowd of 60,561 packed Jack Trice Stadium, the largest crowd to attend a matchup between the Cyclones and Wildcats.

“I know it's hard to win here,” Klieman said. “I've been here enough.”

Jace Gilbert made three field goals to give Iowa State a 9-7 lead entering the fourth quarter. Gilbert missed three times a week earlier at Kansas, including a potential game-tying kink in the closing seconds.

“Just young players that are playing inconsistently,” Campbell said. “You still see ‘A’ players making ‘A’ plays, but we're not as consistent as we need to be to win football games right now."

For the Wildcats, it was their fewest points scored in a conference road win since 1982.

Brooks and Knowles were the first Kansas State receiving tandem to each go over 100 yards in a Big 12 game since 2014.

Kansas State should remain in the Top 25 for a third straight week and climb inside the top 20, after rival Kansas' loss to Texas Christian earlier Saturday.

Tennant FG rallies No. 20 Kansas State past Iowa State 10-9

A short-handed Barton Community College volleyball team grinded Saturday evening at the Barton Gym but the 15th ranked Saints of Seward County Community College was too much in recording a straight set 25-21, 25-21, and 25-11 victory.

The loss slides Barton to 3-7 in conference and 14-7 overall while the conference leader Saints improve to 10-1 and 21-5.

Barton wraps up its brief two-match homestand on Wednesday in hosting Cloud County Community College in a 6:30 p.m. first serve.

Playing without the services of starters Hanna Miller, Jadyn Brown, and Buse Kocakaya, the Cougars committed twenty recorded errors in the seventy-five points won, attacking at just .103 with twenty-two total kills.

Tasiah Nunnery led with five of the kills to move into solo position of 14th career most in program history while Molly Norris and Darby Smith had four kills each. Norris and Jada Davis led the net play with four and three blocks respectively as Clara Lindstrom led the backline with fourteen digs. Iris Oosterbaan put up 17 assists and one ace while defensively collecting six digs and three assisted blocks.

Tied at 12 in the opener, Seward County gained separation on a 5-0 run to eventually lead 20-14. Barton fired back with a trio of points to cut the deficit in half, cutting the gap to two three times before the Saints took three of the final four in gaining the match edge.

A four point Saints stretch broke a 7-all score in the second, expanding the lead to five twice including at 16-11. A Nunnery kill followed by a pair of Davis net plays led Barton back, taking the lead three points later following a 4-0 run led by an Ella Rumford kill and blocks by Norris and Davis for a 19-18 advantage. The Saints quickly erased Barton's final lead of the night with two straight and following a Nunnery kill to tie back up at 20, rolled out the rest of the set with a 5-1 stretch.

Jaden Boden helped the Cougars draw even at 2-all in the third but it was all Saints the rest of the way as Barton substituted and used its entire suited squad in the set. Outscoring Barton 7-1 early, a 9-3 Saints lead grew wider on another 7-1 spurt midway through the finale before another ending the night with a 6 of the last 7 points.

 </figure>A short-handed Barton Community College volleyball team grinded Saturday evening at the Barton Gym but the 15th ranked Saints of Seward County Community College was too much in recording a straight set 25-21, 25-21, and 25-11 victory.The loss slides Barton to 3-7 in conference and 14-7 overall while the conference leader Saints improve to 10-1 and 21-5.Barton wraps up its brief two-match homestand on Wednesday in hosting Cloud County Community College in a 6:30 p.m. first serve.Playing without the services of starters Hanna Miller, Jadyn Brown, and Buse Kocakaya, the Cougars committed twenty recorded errors in the seventy-five points won, attacking at just .103 with twenty-two total kills.Tasiah Nunnery led with five of the kills to move into solo position of 14th career most in program history while Molly Norris and Darby Smith had four kills each. Norris and Jada Davis led the net play with four and three blocks respectively as Clara Lindstrom led the backline with fourteen digs. Iris Oosterbaan put up 17 assists and one ace while defensively collecting six digs and three assisted blocks.Tied at 12 in the opener, Seward County gained separation on a 5-0 run to eventually lead 20-14. Barton fired back with a trio of points to cut the deficit in half, cutting the gap to two three times before the Saints took three of the final four in gaining the match edge.A four point Saints stretch broke a 7-all score in the second, expanding the lead to five twice including at 16-11. A Nunnery kill followed by a pair of Davis net plays led Barton back, taking the lead three points later following a 4-0 run led by an Ella Rumford kill and blocks by Norris and Davis for a 19-18 advantage. The Saints quickly erased Barton's final lead of the night with two straight and following a Nunnery kill to tie back up at 20, rolled out the rest of the set with a 5-1 stretch.Jaden Boden helped the Cougars draw even at 2-all in the third but it was all Saints the rest of the way as Barton substituted and used its entire suited squad in the set. Outscoring Barton 7-1 early, a 9-3 Saints lead grew wider on another 7-1 spurt midway through the finale before another ending the night with a 6 of the last 7 points.

Evers was back back after missing three games with a collarbone injury. DENVER (AP) — A person with knowledge of the procedure confirms to The Associated Press that Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson flew to Los Angeles on Friday to get an injection for his ailing throwing shoulder. The NFL Network first reported the news Saturday. Wilson landed on the injury report last week and coach Nathaniel Hackett said he had gotten “dinged up” in the Broncos' loss at Las Vegas. Wilson played poorly in the Broncos' 12-9 overtime loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday night. Afterward he mentioned “battling” shoulder discomfort but didn't blame the injury for his performance.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster has been limited in practice because his hamstring tightened up. That leaves one of Patrick Mahomes’ top weapons questionable for their game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday night. The Chiefs have a number of lingering injuries. Wind and cooler temperatures only fueled the Barton Community College women's golf team as the Cougars carded the lone second round improvement on Wednesday to break a program record in climbing into 3rd place of the NJCAA National Preview held the past two days at Garden City's Buffalo Dunes Golf Coursed.

The Cougars ranked third in all but one of the team statistical categories, shooting a fourth best 306 round on Thursday before posting the field's lone improved round despite the 15mph sustained winds and 40-dgree temperatures for a 302 in climbing into third with a 40-over 608. The two-day accumulation rose to the top of the program record by three strokes in bettering the 611 achievement set by the 2015-16 squad.

Odessa College took the team title with 289 and 297 rounds for an 18-over 586 to own a twelve stroke victory over Western Texas College's 30-over 598.

The Cougars' top three players each improved on day two in helping the team move up the standings.

Yu Wei Chiang led the Cougars with a tie for the runner-up spot at 5-over 147, posting a 74 before climbing five spots with a field second best 73 round. Chiang played the short holes at a field second best even par and a second best 3-over on the par 4's to rank third overall with 25 pars in the thirty-six holes.

Just two strokes back was Saya Schweitzer in a 5th place gridlock, carding 75 and 74 rounds for a 7-over 149 as the freshman led the field on the par 4's with a 2-over and third best five birdies.

Pornnapa Inmee again led the Cougars with a final round climb, surging up six spots into 18th at 15-over 157 behind 80 and 77 rounds. Joining Inmee in the 18th position, Andrea Peraza stayed consistent with 79 and 78 rounds.

Valentina Leyva stood in 17th of the 41 participant field following Thursday's 78 card before slipping into 24th with a final round of 85 to finish at 21-over 163.

Paulina Villavicencio led the remaining four Cougars entered with a 31st place 37-over 179 by opening with a 91 before following with a three stroke improvement 88. Katina Bartel also improved on Friday from a 97 to a 96 to place 34th at 51-over 193. Allyson Kaiser carded 98 and 101 rounds for a 36th place 57-over 199 while Lillyan Kimberlin placed 38th at 79-over 221 with 105 and 116 cards.

The Cougars have short turnaround for its next meet, joining their male counterparts in hosting the Barton Invitational held Monday and Tuesday at Lake Barton Golf Course.

Barton women's golf posts school record climbing into 3rd place of NJCAA National Preview

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Max Duggan almost single-handedly carried TCU to wins in its first four games. Against Kansas, another threat emerged for the Horned Frogs, and that should concern defensive coordinators across the Big 12.

The Horned Frogs (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) are out to their best start since 2017 after winning the matchup of surprise unbeatens.

Duggan found Johnston 14 times for 206 yards, the most by a TCU receiver since 2016. Johnston entered Saturday with 12 catches for 114 yards and no touchdowns over four games.

“We had a plan from the end of the last game until now and that was to play fast,” Johnston said. “As receivers, we’ve got to get the ball and get as many yards up the field. I wouldn’t say that was the best of our ability, but we did enough to win.

“It’s all a mindset. If you love football, you’re going to go get it every single day.”

Duggan knew his big receiver had the tools. It was just a matter of figuring out how to use them.

“With the ball in his hands you can see how talented he is,” the quarterback said. “Seeing him burst out again was fun to watch. I just have to keep doing a good job of getting him the ball.”

TCU is not where anyone expected them to be nearly halfway through the season. The Horned Frogs were picked seventh in the Big 12 preseason polls. But inside the locker room, no one is surprised.

“When we got through fall camp, we knew we had some talented players,” TCU coach Sonny Dykes said. “We felt if we could figure things out we’re going to have a pretty good football team that can string some wins together.

“But we’ve got a lot of stuff we have to clean up on defense, and we’ve got a lot of stuff to clean up on offense. We left a lot of plays out there.”

“It was huge to (win) a game like that on the road against a ranked opponent,” Duggan said. “We struggled in parts. Getting a win like that builds our confidence.”

Duggan outdueled Kansas backup quarterback Jason Bean in a wild second half. Jalon Daniels, who led the Jayhawks to five straight wins for their best start since 2009, suffered an apparent injury to his right (throwing) shoulder late in the first half.

Bean, who started the first 10 games last season, was 16 of 24 for 262 yards and he became the first Kansas quarterback to throw for four touchdowns in a half since Todd Reesing in 2008.

“I don’t think it did much,” Dykes said of the switch to Bean. “They did what they did. Jason came in and played really well. I felt like we had guys contained and we got outrun. Any time your backup quarterback can come in and plays at the level he played at, you’ve got a good football team.”

Kansas coach Lance Leipold liked his team's resiliency.

“I’m proud of the way we battled, being down, losing Jalon,” he said. “I think we left opportunities out there. I’d like to commend (Bean), the way he’s handled it to be ready. If he is asked to be the starter next week, I’m very confident he’ll have a very good week of preparation and take advantage of his opportunity to be a starter.”

Leipold said he would know more about Daniels' status after further testing on his shoulder Monday. The coach didn't rule out Daniels for the next game.

The Jayhawks (5-1, 2-1 Big 12) got their first points on Jacob Borcila’s 40-yard field goal one play after Daniels injured his shoulder.

Bean threw touchdown passes of 12 yards to Tanaka Scott and 8 yards Luke Grimm to put the Jayhawks up 17-10 in the third quarter. Duggan found Derius Davis on a 51-yard touchdown pass to tie it, and after Jamoi Hodge picked off Bean, TCU regained the lead on a 3-yard run by Duggan.

TCU: Duggan is playing some of the best football of his career. He averaged 6.1 yards per carry and nearly 10 yards per pass attempt. He’s got a great grasp of offensive coordinator Garrett Riley’s offense.

Kansas: The 5-0 start was not a fluke. Even with Daniels injured near the end of the first half, the Jayhawks were able to move the ball on the ground and through the air.

TCU is in for a promotion. It could be a close call whether the Jayhawks stay in the Top 25 after entering the rankings for the first time since 2009 last week.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Max Duggan almost single-handedly carried TCU to wins in its first four games. Against Kansas, another threat emerged for the Horned Frogs, and that should concern defensive coordinators across the Big 12.Duggan passed for three touchdowns in the second half, including the game-winning 24-yarder to Quinten Johnston with 1:36 left to cap a wild second half, and No. 17 TCU beat 19th-ranked Kansas 38-31 on Saturday.The Horned Frogs (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) are out to their best start since 2017 after winning the matchup of surprise unbeatens.Duggan found Johnston 14 times for 206 yards, the most by a TCU receiver since 2016. Johnston entered Saturday with 12 catches for 114 yards and no touchdowns over four games.“We had a plan from the end of the last game until now and that was to play fast,” Johnston said. “As receivers, we’ve got to get the ball and get as many yards up the field. I wouldn’t say that was the best of our ability, but we did enough to win.“It’s all a mindset. If you love football, you’re going to go get it every single day.”Duggan knew his big receiver had the tools. It was just a matter of figuring out how to use them.“With the ball in his hands you can see how talented he is,” the quarterback said. “Seeing him burst out again was fun to watch. I just have to keep doing a good job of getting him the ball.”TCU is not where anyone expected them to be nearly halfway through the season. The Horned Frogs were picked seventh in the Big 12 preseason polls. But inside the locker room, no one is surprised.“When we got through fall camp, we knew we had some talented players,” TCU coach Sonny Dykes said. “We felt if we could figure things out we’re going to have a pretty good football team that can string some wins together.“But we’ve got a lot of stuff we have to clean up on defense, and we’ve got a lot of stuff to clean up on offense. We left a lot of plays out there.”Duggan finished 23 of 33 for 308 yards.“It was huge to (win) a game like that on the road against a ranked opponent,” Duggan said. “We struggled in parts. Duggan, Johnston lead No. 17 TCU past Kansas; Daniels hurt

Nina Norshie and Nia Baker of the 12th ranked Barton Community College women's soccer team were plated on the league weekly honors with a national award tacked on as well.

The duo helped the Cougars to a pair of road victories last week, a 5-1 win at Garden City followed by a 4-0 shutout at 20th ranked Coffeyville.

For Norshie is was not only third KJCCC Division I Player of the Week honor but also picked up her second NJCAA Player of the Week distinction. Baker's first conference Goalkeeper of the Week honor comes with sharing the league award with Butler's Kyrah Klumpp.

Norshie continued her historical season jumping into third place in the program's all-time single season goals records adding five more net shakers and dishing out a pair of assists during her 12-point week in contributing to all but two of the Cougars' nine goals scored.

Beginning her week netting her eighth hat trick of the season in scoring four goals and an assist in the win at Garden City. Gaining all attention in Saturday's trip to Coffeyville, Norshie managed to still find the net helping double up the Cougars' lead to 2-0 before ten minutes later adding an assist leading to a three goal first half advantage in Barton's eventual four goal victory.

Having a 14-day layoff protecting the pipes, Baker shook off a rough start in the Cougars' victory at Garden City allowing the first shot faced to slip by for the lone goal given up. The sophomore was nails the rest of the way rejecting the next eighth shots faced over the week improving to 7-1 in net capped by her third shutout of the season.

Most recently the pair and the rest of the Cougars took their first conference loss of the season in getting blanked at 19th ranked Hutchinson. Despite Barton owning a 28-3 edge in shot launched, the Blue Dragons made the most of their shots scoring on two of them for the 2-0 victory in the teams' first of two matchups of the season. The squads will meet again on October 22 to close out the season in a 1:00 p.m. kick on the Cougars' home turf.

The loss halts the Cougars' eight game winning streak falling to 7-1 in Jayhawk West play and 11-2 on the season. Barton will look to get back on track Saturday as they host Dodge City Community College in a 3:00 p.m. kickoff from the Cougar Soccer Complex.

Barton's Grant garners second KJCCC Player of the Week award

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) — The Las Vegas Raiders defense has allowed 13 touchdowns this season, seven coming through the air.

And five of them were thrown by AFC West rivals Justin Herbert of the Chargers and Denver's Russell Wilson.

Monday night the Raiders (1-3) face the division’s best quarterback in Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes, who will provide their secondary its stiffest test of the season.

"He’s at such an elite status in terms of his ability to perform under pressure, make plays within the system,” Las Vegas defensive coordinator Patrick Graham said. “It’s a difficult challenge and I think our preparation for each week, we try to attack it brand new whoever the opponent is and try to see what they do best, how can we take it away, who are they going to in certain situations?”

With the Chiefs (3-1) and Mahomes, the Raiders are presented with numerous issues that are sure to challenge a secondary that has the slimmest margin for errors.

Mahomes, who ranks seventh in the league with 1,106 yards passing, is tied for first with 11 passing touchdowns, alongside Detroit’s Jared Goff and Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson. He has 2,546 yards passing in eight career games against the Raider, more than he's accumulated against any other opponent.

“He’s getting comfortable, he’s getting older, he’s getting wiser,” veteran safety Duron Harmon said about Mahomes. “He knows where he wants to go with the football. He’s doing a good job of getting the ball out quick. Even when it’s dropped back, he just knows where he wants to go with the ball. This is a young quarterback who has continued to grow year after year, game after game.”

And considering that growth, Mahomes knows the area of Las Vegas’ secondary he can attack.

For instance, per Pro Football Focus, safety Johnathan Abram has allowed three touchdowns in coverage in four games for the Raiders against the Chiefs. Overall, Abram has allowed 19 receptions on 20 targets for 237 yards along with the three scores versus the Chiefs.

To his credit, though, Abram leads the secondary and ranks second on the team with 29 tackles combined.
