Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran has apologized for directing a
homophobic slur at a heckling fan during a 10-2 loss to the Houston
Astros. The exchange caught on a live mic during the broadcast of
Sunday's game occurred when Duran was at the plate in the sixth
inning. A fan at Fenway Park can be heard shouting “You need a
tennis racket!” Duran turned his head toward the fan and replied:
“Shut up,” followed by a curse word and the slur. In a statement
issued through the team, Duran said he used a ”truly horrific word"
and apologized to the LGBTQ community.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) —
Austin Dillon raced to his first NASCAR Cup Series victory in nearly
two years, sending Joey Logano into a spin on the final lap to win in
overtime at Richmond. It was Dillon’s first win since Aug. 28,
2022, at Daytona. He had just two top-10 finishes this year and
entered the race ranked 32nd in the standings. Now he’s on track
for the postseason. But he didn’t do it gently. Logano clearly got
the better of Dillon on the final restart. Then Dillon came up behind
Logano and spun him. And when Denny Hamlin appeared to be moving past
him on the inside, Dillon made contact with him too and sent him into
the wall.

INGLEWOOD, Calif.
(AP) — Stetson Bennett rebounded from a four-interception afternoon
and threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Miller Forristall with 4 seconds
remaining as the Los Angeles Rams rallied for a 13-12 victory over
the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday afternoon in the preseason opener for
both teams. Bennett led the Rams on a 13-play, 70-yard drive,
including his sidearm throw to Forristall on fourth-and-goal from the
Dallas 6-yard line. Bennett went the distance at quarterback and was
24 of 38 for 224 yards with a touchdown and four interceptions while
Trey Lance passed for 188 yards in his first game for the Cowboys.


SAINT-DENIS, France (AP) — Paris has closed out two and a half
extraordinary weeks of Olympic sports and emotion with a star-studded
show in France’s national stadium. The French capital has handed
over hosting duties for the Summer Games to the next city in line:
Los Angeles in 2028. Hollywood star Tom Cruise descended from the top
of the stadium to the “Mission: Impossible” theme song, before
taking the Olympic flag from star gymnast Simone Biles, putting it on
the back of motorcycle and roaring out of the stadium. Los Angeles is
looking to prove that topping Paris isn't mission impossible. The
French capital made spectacular use of its cityscape, with the Eiffel
Tower and other iconic monuments serving as backdrops and venues.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — As the Olympics close in Paris, Los Angeles has
now taken the torch. The city will become the third to host the games
three times. The last was in 1984, when Los Angeles was as much a
star as Olympians Carl Lewis and Mary Lou Retton. Olympic organizers
will take advantage of a recent building boom in the city. The nearly
new SoFi stadium will host an opening ceremony that will also
incorporate the century-old Memorial Coliseum. The region has much
more public transportation than it did in '84, but is looking to
build much more by 2028.


PARIS (AP) — U.S. Olympic officials say they will appeal a court
ruling that resulted in American gymnast Jordan Chiles being asked to
return the bronze medal she won in the Paris Olympics floor exercise.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) voided an on-floor appeal by
Chiles’ coach that vaulted her to third, saying the appeal came 4
seconds beyond the 1-minute time limit for scoring inquiries. The
International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) said Saturday night it
would respect the court’s decision and elevate Barbosu to third.
The International Olympic Committee confirmed the ruling Sunday,
announcing that it was reallocating the bronze from last Monday’s
women’s floor final to Romanian Ana Barbosu.

PARIS (AP) — The U.S. women's basketball team had to overcome its greatest challenge in 32 years before extending the Americans' unprecedented run to eight straight Olympic gold medals. Led by A’ja Wilson, Sunday they came away with another victory at the Paris Games.

It was the closest — and maybe sweetest — of any other during the streak.

Wilson scored 21 points and the U.S. survived a last-second shot by former UConn standout Gabby Williams that was just inside the 3-point line to hold off France for a 67-66 win.

No team had been able to push the Americans during this impressive streak of 61 consecutive wins. Only two of those victories had been by single digits before the game against France.

“It’s amazing. It truly is a dynasty that we have built here at USAB has been incredible," Wilson said. "And I am so proud of the resilience that my team showed. We could have fumbled it many times, but we pulled through. To say I am a two-time gold medalist, I am so blessed.”

The eight straight golds broke a tie with the American men’s program that won seven in a row from 1936-68. The women’s victory came less than 24 hours after the U.S. men’s team also beat France in the title game. This was the first time in Olympic history that both gold medal games featured the same two teams.

Unlike the men's game, this one came down to the final second and one last shot by France.

The Americans were up 67-64 with 3.9 seconds left after Kahleah Copper hit two free throws. Marine Johannes brought the ball up the court to Williams who caught the ball just inside the 3-point line and banked in over the outstretched arms of Breanna Stewart for the final margin.

There was a brief delay before the officials signaled that it was a two-point shot, which led to the beginning of a celebration and a lot of happy hugs for the Americans and left the French players standing in disbelief after falling just short.

“Gabby hit some great shots down the end, tough shots,” Wilson said. “We understood what we had in our locker room and leaning on each other and talking to one another and believing that we believed in each other and that’s the greatest thing about it.”

The American players went celebrate with the celebrities sitting courtside that included men's basketball players LeBron James, Bam Adebayo, Derrick White, along with U.S. women’s greats Lisa Leslie, Sue Bird and Dawn Staley.

Williams, who finished with 19 points, had hit a deep 3 a few seconds earlier to get France within one before Copper’s free throws. She got a consoling hug from Staley.

“What a tremendous basketball game. The 12,000-plus that were here were just treated to an unbelievable environment and the level of athleticism and competitiveness that these players had,” U.S. coach Cheryl Reeve said. “What a better way to finish the Paris Olympics than to see that? We feel really fortunate, happy, a lot of words. There’s a lot of trust that has to happen, so I’m just thrilled that we’re able to get a win.”

The victory gave Diana Taurasi a sixth consecutive gold medal, making her the most decorated basketball player in Olympic history, breaking a tie with longtime teammate Sue Bird, who won five.

Taurasi, who didn’t play in the gold medal game, has been humble about the potential record, saying she cares more about the team winning then her individual success.

It’s been a trying Olympics for her as she didn’t start any of the knockout phase games, the first time she wasn’t in the opening lineup since the 2004 Olympics.

US women hold off France to win eighth straight Olympic basketball gold medal

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels added to his list of preseason accolades Thursday as he was named to the 2024 Davey O'Brien Award Watch List, which features a group of 36 of the nation's top returning college quarterbacks.

This is the fourth preseason watch list of the preseason for Daniels, who was previously listed by the Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award and the Comeback Player of the Year Award. His appearance on the Davey O'Brien Watch List marks his second straight season among the top returning quarterbacks.

The Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award. The 48th Annual Davey O'Brien Awards Dinner honoring the winner will be held Monday, Feb. 17, 2025, at The Fort Worth Club in Fort Worth, Texas. Compiled by a subset of the Davey O'Brien National Selection Committee, this year's list was selected based on previous Division I career player performance as well as expectations heading into the 2024 college football season.

Daniels returns for his fifth season at Kansas in 2024 after throwing for 705 yards and five touchdowns in three games last year. In 2022, Daniels was a breakthrough player as he led the Jayhawks to a 5-0 start and the program's first bowl game appearance since 2008. He was an All-Big 12 Second Team selection after completing 66.1 percent (152-of-230) of his passes for 2,014 yards and 18 touchdowns. Daniels capped off his sophomore season with a record-setting performance in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, when he completed 37-of-55 passes for 544 yards and five touchdowns, while also rushing for a touchdown.

From Lawndale, California, Daniels enters the season ranked No. 9 in school history with 4,297 passing yards and No. 5 with 31 passing touchdowns. At his current career completion rate of 63.6 percent (365-of-574), Daniels would surpass the previous school record of 63.3 percent, set by Todd Reesing from 2006-09.

The preseason watch list features 22 seniors, 12 juniors and two sophomores. Daniels is one of eight quarterbacks from the Big 12 Conference on the list, which ties the league with the ACC for the most watch list honorees. The official Davey O'Brien Midseason Watch List will be released on Tuesday, Oct. 22, and will contain active quarterbacks from the Preseason Watch List, players honored as weekly Great 8 recipients through the season's first eight weeks and any additional quarterbacks approved by the selection subcommittee.

The list of semifinalists selected from the QB Class will be named on Tuesday, Nov. 12. The Foundation will announce the three finalists two weeks later (Tuesday, Nov. 26). In 2022, Daniels was a breakthrough player as he led the Jayhawks to a 5-0 start and the program's first bowl game appearance since 2008. He was an All-Big 12 Second Team selection after completing 66.1 percent (152-of-230) of his passes for 2,014 yards and 18 touchdowns. Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels added to 2024 Davey O'Brien Award Watch List

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. drove in three runs and Michael Wacha struck out six in seven innings to lead the Kansas City Royals to an 8-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night.

Maikel Garcia had an RBI single, Witt added an RBI triple and Salvador Perez hit a two-run, opposite field homer to right in the Royals’ four-run seventh inning. Perez, the 2015 World Series MVP, went 1 for 3 with the homer on the 13th anniversary of his MLB debut.

“Situational hitting was really good tonight,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “We had a lot of hits to move runners and put some pressure on by stealing some bases. We used every little bit to hang in that game.”

The victory clinched the season series for Kansas City for the first time since 2016. The teams split the two-game set.

Wacha (9-6) gave up two runs on five hits with two walks. He has allowed two runs or fewer in eight of his 10 starts at Kauffman Stadium this season. Lucas Erceg recorded his fourth save.

“I felt good, I felt like I had a lot of pitches working and a lot of command with my mix today and the defense behind me played great," Wacha said. "We were going for the season series here tonight and I was just excited to come away with a win and every game is big for us right now. We just keep trying to rack up wins and keep making a little noise.”

Garcia gave the Royals a 3-2 lead in the seventh. Kyle Isbel gave Kansas City an insurance run in the eighth with an RBI triple. Freddy Fermin drove in his 31st run of the season.

Cardinals starter Andre Pallante pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits with four walks with four strikeouts. Ryan Fernandez (1-4) took the loss in relief.

“(Pallante) did a nice job for us, he really did," St. Louis manager Oliver Marmol said. “He was able to stay focused, in the moment and keep attacking. I thought he did a really nice job with that today.”

Paul Goldschmidt hit a 430-foot, two-run home run, his 18th of the season, to give the Cardinals a lead in the second inning. Nolan Gorman added two hits as St. Louis went 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position.

Royals: Placed RHP Hunter Harvey (mid-back tightness) on the 15-day injured list retroactive to August 7. RHP Carlos Hernandez was recalled in the corresponding move.

St. Louis will head to Cincinnati for a three-game series starting Monday. Sonny Gray (11-6, 3.65 ERA) is slated to take the mound for the Cardinals. Kansas City will head to Minnesota for a three-game series starting Monday. Brady Singer (8-7, 3.03) will get the start.

Bobby Witt drives in 3 runs to lead the Royals to an 8-3 victory over Cardinals

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown was taken to a local hospital with a dislocated clavicle, a potentially significant setback for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions.

Brown, who signed a one-year, $7 million contract in March, landed awkwardly on his shoulder following an 11-yard reception on the opening play of a 26-13 preseason loss at Jacksonville on Saturday night.

“I think he’ll miss some time," coach Andy Reid said. "We’ll just see where he’s at. He’s kind of going through it right now and we’ll know more later on.”

Reid said it was the same injury — a sternoclavicular joint dislocation — that sidelined former Chiefs receiver Tyreek Hill for four games early in 2019. Coincidentally, Hill was injured on the same field in the regular-season opener that year.

Brown's injury was one of several issues for the Chiefs in their preseason opener.

Jacksonville's Parker Washington delivered the longest return under the NFL’s new kickoff rules — an ankle-breaking, 73-yarder that set up an early touchdown — and the Jaguars nearly scored three times on special teams.

“We'll get it cleaned up,” Reid said.

Washington made at least five tacklers miss before finally going down at the Chiefs’ 30-yard line. Trevor Lawrence found running back Travis Etienne for a 9-yard score four plays later to give the Jaguars the two biggest highlights of the game.

“He's a spark,” Lawrence said of Washington.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce and Kansas City’s other starters played a series before watching the rest from the sideline. Mahomes drove the Chiefs into field-goal range and might have done more had Rashee Rice not dropped a third-down pass over the middle.

Washington, meanwhile, made the most of every opportunity.

The second-year pro, a sixth-round draft pick in 2023 from Penn State, turned heads with the kickoff return and then added a 13-yard punt return. He later chipped in a 10-yard catch in which he slipped out of Keith Taylor’s grasp.

The Jaguars have raved about Washington since training camp opened, and he showed up under the lights. He’s expected to be the team’s No. 4 receiver in a room that includes Christian Kirk, Gabe Davis and first-round rookie Brian Thomas Jr.

Washington gave the Chiefs plenty to work on moving forward. Covering kickoffs has to be an area of emphasis for them.

After Jacksonville went ahead 18-10 on C.J. Beathard’s 44-yard TD pass to speedster Devin Duvernay, Mecole Hardman tried to down a kickoff that bounced in and out of the end zone. Officials huddled, checked the replay and ruled it a safety.

“I think that’s kind of the first time that’s ever happened,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said at halftime. “With the new kickoff rule, the ball is always live, even when it hits in the end zone.”

Jacksonville’s Tank Bigsby looked like he was going to return the ensuing kickoff for a score — kicker Harrison Butker showed no interest in trying to tackle the 215-pound running back — but Bigsby tripped near midfield.

Officials overturned Jaguars cornerback Christian Braswell’s 52-yard fumble return for a touchdown late in the third. Braswell stripped the ball from Nikko Remigio following a 29-yard reception in which he landed on the ground and got up to gain more yards.

Officials ruled Braswell touched Remigio while he was still on the ground, but few in the stands and none on Jacksonville’s sideline agreed.

Thomas, the 23rd overall pick in April from LSU, had the catch of the night for Jacksonville. Thomas hauled in a 41-yarder from Beathard in the first quarter despite having cornerback Joshua Williams draped all over him. Pederson thought Williams should have been flagged for pass interference. It was Thomas’ lone reception.

Kansas City’s Xavier Worthy, selected five picks after Thomas, started but wasn’t even targeted in the game.

The Jaguars held out eight players, including starting defensive backs Darnell Savage (shoulder) and Tyson Campbell (ankle). They also held out two starting offensive linemen: left guard Ezra Cleveland (heel) and right tackle Anton Harrison (concussion protocol).

Second-year linebacker Ventrell Miller, who missed all of last season after tearing his right Achilles tendon, left the game briefly with a right shoulder injury but later returned.

Chiefs guard McKade Mettauer limped off the field in the fourth with a left knee injury after getting caught in a pile. Rookie linebacker Curtis Jacobs also was shaken up late.

The Jaguars host Tampa Bay next Saturday.

Pre-season bummer; WR Marquise Brown injured in 26-13 loss at Jaguars

PARIS (AP) — Stephen Curry was thinking about this two years ago, after winning his fourth NBA title with the Golden State Warriors. The only thing left for him to win was Olympic gold.

And in the ultimate moment, he made sure that medal would be his.

The U.S. is atop the international men’s basketball world once again, after Curry scored 24 points — all on 3-pointers — and led the way to a 98-87 win over France in the final at the Paris Games on Saturday night. It was the fifth consecutive gold medal for the U.S. and the 17th in 20 all-time appearances for the Americans at the Games.

“You just stay confident, stay present and don’t get rattled by the moment,” said Curry, who had 17 3-pointers in his last two games, starting with nine against Serbia to get to the gold-medal game.

Added U.S. coach Steve Kerr: “Steph earned this.”

Curry made four 3-pointers in the final 2:43, including the one that just sealed the win with 1:19 remaining. It put the U.S. up 93-84 and he skipped down the court letting out a yell, shaking his jersey so everyone could see the “USA” across the front.

If that wasn’t enough, one more followed with about 30 seconds left — along with the go-to-sleep move where he puts his hands together on the side of his face. “Night night,” he calls it, and he came prepared, with a special shirt to wear after the game for a champagne-and-cigars celebration. “Nuit nuit,” it said, the French translation.

“For me to get a gold medal is insane, and I thank God for the opportunity to experience it,” Curry said.

Kevin Durant — the first four-time men’s gold medalist in Olympic basketball history — scored 15 for the Americans, as did Devin Booker. LeBron James, wearing metallic gold shoes that needed no explanation, scored 14 for the U.S. as he won his fourth Olympic medal and third gold.

“Super humbled that I can still play this game,” James said. “Played at a high level, played with 11 other great players and a great coaching staff and went on and did it for our country. It was a great moment around.”

For the second consecutive Olympics, the French had to watch the Americans hold up U.S. flags in celebration after the title game. The French lost to the U.S. 87-82 in Tokyo three years ago, and this one was down to the final minutes.

“I think we might be the only team in the world whose fans are ashamed of them if they get a silver medal,” said Kerr, the Golden State coach whose two-summer run with the U.S. ends with a 21-3 record and Olympic gold — 11-0 this summer. “That’s the pressure that we face. But our players, and you saw Steph, they love the pressure. They appreciate this atmosphere and they were fantastic.”

Victor Wembanyama, the NBA Rookie of the Year for San Antonio in his first Olympic final, was brilliant for France, scoring 26 points — the second-most ever against the U.S. in a gold-medal game, one behind the 27 that Drazen Dalipagic scored for Yugoslavia in 1976.

“I’m learning,” Wembanyama said. “And I’m worried for the opponents in a couple of years.”

Wembanyama covered his face in a towel afterward as the Americans celebrated. Guerschon Yabusele scored 20 for the hosts.

“For sure, it’s a disappointment because we expected we could do it,” France coach Vincent Collet said. “But we have to recognize at the end that they are better. We are very close ... When they make fantastic shots, that’s the difference.”

The U.S. lead was 14 early in the third, looking poised to pull away. But the offense quickly went cold and when Evan Fournier connected on a 3-pointer with 3:05 left in the quarter the lead was down to 65-59 after a 12-4 run by the hosts.

And with a chance to go up double digits headed to the fourth, a big U.S. blunder gave France another jolt of momentum. Anthony Edwards and Durant got their signals crossed on a pass that led to a turnover, Nando De Colo scored to beat the buzzer and the U.S. lead was only 72-66 going into the final 10 minutes.

It got as close as three. No closer, thanks to Curry. He hit four 3-pointers in a span of 2:12, the last one of them a bit of the circus variety, and they all immediately went into Olympic lore.

“A big shot to put us up six. That kind of settled everything,” Curry said. “And then the rhythm, the avalanche came, and thankfully the other three went in. That was an unbelievable moment. I’ve been blessed to play basketball at a high level for a very long time. This ranks very high in terms of excitement and the sense of relief, getting to the finish line.”

It was the eighth time in Olympic history — and Sunday’s women’s final between the U.S. and France will mark the ninth — that the home team got to play for basketball gold.

Home teams are now 5-3 in those games, 2-1 on the men’s side. The U.S. men and women both won in 1984 and 1996; the women of the Soviet Union won in 1980, while Australia’s women lost to the U.S. in 2000 and Japan’s women also lost to the U.S. at the Tokyo Games three years ago.

For James, it was one more thing for the neverending list that is his legacy. For Durant, it was history with four golds. For Booker, Anthony Davis, Jayson Tatum and Bam Adebayo, it was a second gold. For Jrue Holiday, it was a second gold to match his wife — soccer great Lauren Cheney Holiday — for the family lead. For Derrick White, Tyrese Haliburton, Joel Embiid and Edwards, it was the first Olympic title.

“This has been an amazing experience, a beautiful experience,” Durant said.

And for Curry, it was a long time coming after he wasn't available for previous Olympics. The Americans couldn’t have been more thrilled that he was there for this one.

“I was smilin’, cheesin’, having the best time of my life,” Curry said.

He likened it to a Game 7 on the road, which it basically was. He’s had enormous success in those moments: a 50-point outburst to lead Golden State past Sacramento in 2023, and a 27-point, 10-assist, nine-rebound performance to win a do-or-die game in Houston in 2018.

Stubbs’ head-first slide landed him on the back of Marte’s left leg as the fielder was on his knee, and he fell to the ground in pain. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Gabby Thomas - the gold medalists in the 400 hurdles and 200 meters - handed a 30-meter lead to Alexis Holmes, who didn’t lose any ground. Bass has declared it will be the “no-car games” and venues will only be accessible by public transportation. It will take more than 3,000 buses and LA 2028 organizers will need to bring them in from all over the country. Additionally, Bass wants to collaborate with major Los Angeles businesses to encourage employees to work remotely during a 17-day period to reduce the number of cars on the roads. Bass will receive the Olympic flag from Paris' mayor during Sunday's closing ceremony.

SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France (AP) — Lydia Ko has an Olympic medal worth more than its weight in gold. The Kiwi held on to win the women's golf competition at Le Golf National by two shots. That completes her collection of Olympic medals. And the gold gave her the point she needed to become the 35th member of the LPGA Hall of Fame. Ko won the silver medal in Rio de Janeiro and the bronze in Tokyo. This was closer than it needed to be. She led by five shots in the 13th fairway. Esther Henseleit of Germany won the silver and Xiyu Lin of China captured bronze.

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Deion “ Coach Prime ” Sanders kicked off his second season at Colorado with a combative news conference Friday when he also celebrated his 57th birthday and became a grandfather.

Donning his signature shades and a Buffaloes baseball cap, Sanders started things off by thanking the person who left a card and several packages of fried pastries at the microphone.

“Trying to get my six-pack, I can't eat these honeybuns,” he cracked in what would be the lightest moment of his 30-minute news conference, which he would conclude by professing his love for “85% of you.”

Sanders didn't detail the source of his frustrations but there have been a couple of reports from outlets outside Colorado this offseason that painted his program in a less than positive light.

His testy exchanges highlighted the session at Colorado's annual fall sports media day, which is typically a day of positivity and hope.

Sanders said he feels great physically after enduring health challenges a year ago and also feels better about his team heading into Year 2 as the Buffaloes move back to the Big 12 following the dissolution of the Pac-12.

Sanders retooled his roster, particularly in the trenches, after going 4-8 in his first season in Boulder last year.

He grew testy, however, when asked about his bolstered offensive line that will protect his son, QB Shedeur Sanders, who was sacked 52 times in 2023.

“What does ‘bolstered’ mean?” Sanders interrupted, suggesting “improved” was a better term “because I don't know all that ‘bolstered’ stuff, I've never used that in a sentence. ... Let's say that. We improved our offensive line.”

So, in what ways could he try to accelerate the creation of the new offensive line's chemistry ahead of the Buffaloes' Aug. 29 opener against North Dakota State?

“What is chemistry?” retorted Sanders.

He shut down the next inquiry before it was even asked, from a CBS affiliate in Denver. He didn't go into details about his beef with the national network, but it's closely aligned with 247Sports, which this summer detailed a judicial judgment against son Shilo Sanders, a safety on the team, and his subsequent bankruptcy filing.

Sanders told the journalist it wasn't personal but he wouldn't allow him to ask anything. He similarly shut down another question as he verbally sparred with a Denver Post reporter he accused of always going after his program.

The reporter ultimately suggested they hammer out any disagreements in private. Sanders agreed but said he wouldn't entertain any football questions from him until they had that conversation.

“I have a question over here,” offered Shilo Sanders, grabbing the microphone as he awaited his own turn at the podium. “Since this is your birthday. Do you have any birthday plans?”

Sanders replied that his kids probably didn't get him anything, as usual.

His son then asked him about becoming a grandfather as his daughter Deiondra Sanders gave birth Friday to a boy.

“That's why I don't have time for this foolishness. That's how good God is, that God would choose me on my birthday for my daughter to have her first child," Sanders said. “The first time I'm a grandfather on my birthday.”

Sanders' sons followed him to microphone and were asked about becoming uncles.

“It's real exciting. My sister, I just got the text," Shedeur said before being interrupted by his older brother, Deion Sanders Jr., who was videoing the news conference and informed him that their sister didn't want them talking about it.

“Oh, well, I don't know what you're talking about,” he pivoted.

Shilo Sanders cut through the laughter and ignored Deion Jr.'s admonition.

“He's nice, he's healthy," Shilo said of his nephew. "I've seen him on FaceTime. So, I'm proud of her.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Willson Contreras hit a pair of two-run homers and the St. Louis Cardinals rallied to beat the Kansas City Royals 8-5 on Friday night.

Contreras opened the scoring in the first with a two-run shot off the top of the bullpen fence in right and added another two-run shot in the ninth, blasting his 15th homer 424 feet to left for his 15th multi-homer game.

“An absolute tank to left,” Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said. “Some really good at-bats and big swings by Contreras.”

Trailing 5-3 after five innings, the Cardinals scored five runs on seven hits against six relievers.

Will Smith (0-4) retired one of three batters faced in the eighth and, after a failed Kansas City challenge on a potential inning-ending double play grounder, St. Louis took a 6-5 lead on Victor Scott II’s two-out, two-run double.

“I was telling myself if he’s safe, it’s going to be definitely a critical situation in the ballgame,” Scott said. “Being able to come through right there is definitely special. There’s runners on base, so I’m just trying to do damage.”

Contreras, Alex Burleson and Brendan Donovan each had three of St. Louis’ 13 hits.

Matthew Liberatore (3-3) threw three hitless innings in relief of Miles Mikolas, who allowed five runs on eight hits in four innings.

“My goodness, look at what (Liberatore) did,” Marmol said. “36 pitches, three innings, didn’t give up anything at all. His stuff was sharp. He was pretty dominant. It was good to go to him early. (He) just shut them down.”

Mikolas has a 7.11 ERA over his past five starts. Ryan Hensley allowed a hit and a walk in finishing for his 37th save.

“I felt like we had a pretty good game plan going in,” Michael Massey said. “I felt like we did a pretty good job against him.”

Burleson lined his team-leading 20th home run to right leading off the third as the Cardinals built a 3-0 lead.

Kyle Isbel’s third-inning RBI triple snapped his 0-for-21 slide, plating the first run Mikolas surrendered to the Royals after 19 career scoreless frames. RBI singles by Massey and Salvador Perez tied it.
