Stasa Stamenkovic&nbsp;of the 12th ranked Barton Community College volleyball team has been selected as the Week Seven KJCCC Division I Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week.

Last week, Stamenkovic led the Cougars to a pair of conference victories — first in a straight-set win at Cloud County, followed by Saturday's five-set home victory over Hutchinson.

The freshman outside hitter averaged 4.63 kills per set, compiling 37 kills on .299 hitting across eight sets while adding 19 digs and a pair of service aces. She opened the week with 10 kills on .318 hitting in the road sweep at Cloud County before delivering a career-best 27 kills on .292 hitting with 12 digs against Hutchinson.

Most recently, in last night's sweep of Seward County, Stamenkovic once again led the offense with 13 kills on a .360 clip while adding 14 digs for her 12th double-double of the season.

The honor is Stamenkovic's second of the season, following her Week Four distinction, and marks the Cougars' ninth conference award of the year. She joins&nbsp;Mina Kaneko's four weekly honors (Weeks 1, 2, 4, and 6) — including Kaneko's Week Six national award — along with&nbsp;Ori Briger's Week Two recognition and Week Three selections for&nbsp;Aubrey Olander&nbsp;and&nbsp;Indigo Pruitt.

Now 8–1 in conference play and 21–5 overall, Barton continues its homestand Saturday with a 6:00 p.m. first serve against Dodge City Community College.

It marks the second time this season Tsuji has earned both conference and national honors, having previously shared the spotlight with teammate&nbsp;Pedro Lisboa&nbsp;in Week Three when the duo swept the KJCCC and NJCAA Division I weekly awards — Tsuji for offense and Lisboa for goalkeeping. A Lions-Chiefs matchup was considered a potential Super Bowl preview when the schedule came out. It still could be considering the state of the AFC. Detroit rebounded from a lopsided loss to Green Bay in Week 1 to win four in a row. EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — LeBron James will miss opening night of his record 23rd NBA season due to sciatica that will be re-evaluated in three to four weeks. The Los Angeles Lakers announced James' condition on Thursday. The 40-year-old superstar will be sidelined at least until the end of October. Sciatica is pain originating in the nerves running from the buttocks and down the legs. James has the issue on his right side. James has yet to participate in a full practice since the Lakers opened training camp. Bill Belichick's first season at North Carolina has run into problems both on and off the field. The Tar Heels are 2-3 but have lost in lopsided fashion in all three of their games against power-conference opponents. UNC announced the suspension of an assistant coach for rules violations on Thursday. The school said it is also investigating further into more potential concerns. UNC is off this week and next plays at California on Oct. 17. Belichick issued a terse statement late Wednesday saying he was “fully committed” to building the UNC program.

PHOENIX (AP) — The Las Vegas Aces are in position to make short work of the WNBA’s expanded playoff schedule. A’ja Wilson’s turnaround jumper with 0.3 seconds remaining lifted the Aces over the Phoenix Mercury for a thrilling 90-88 win on Wednesday night. It also gave Las Vegas a 3-0 lead in the first best-of-seven WNBA Finals in league history. The Aces would already be celebrating their third championship in four seasons in the previous best-of-five format. In 2025, there’s more work to do. Game 4 is on Friday night in Phoenix.

The result drops the Cougars into fifth place in the Jayhawk standings at 4-5-0 and 7-6-0 overall, while the Grizzlies climb into second at 5-3-1 in league play, and 6-6-3 on the season. Barton will look to bounce back Saturday night with a 5:00 p.m. kickoff at Garden City Community College inside Broncbuster Stadium.

Barton battled evenly through the opening 45 minutes, matching Butler in both possession and opportunities. After the Grizzlies opened the scoring in the 8th minute,&nbsp;Katie Potter&nbsp;delivered the equalizer four minutes later, running down&nbsp;Sara Aguirre's perfectly placed ball behind the defense for her fourth goal of the season.

Playing into a steady south wind in the second half, the Cougars found themselves on the defensive end for much of the final period as Butler capitalized on a trio of set piece opportunities to pull away.

12th ranked Barton Volleyball dispatches Seward County in straight sets

Women’s college basketball wasn’t always the behemoth with storied programs like UConn, Tennessee and South Carolina dominating the headlines and the Final Four. A half-century ago, tiny Immaculata won the first three national AIAW titles and then Delta State did the same thing before the likes of Louisiana Tech, Old Dominion and Rutgers started a slow trend of bigger programs becoming the backbone of a fledgling sport that a nation was – and is – still learning to appreciate. The women’s basketball poll, founded by the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Mel Greenberg in 1976, was there for all of it. It began six years before the first NCAA Tournament in 1982 as a roadmap. The upcoming season will be the 50th year of the women’s basketball poll with the AP rankings setting the table for the season.

Some of the big names will be missing but the cross country tradition continues at the Lake Barton course north of Great Bend. The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) has announced that Lake Barton will host a Class 5A regional for the seventh-straight year.

Lake Barton has often hosted two regional races. Only 5A will be running a regional at the site this year. The girls' race is set to begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25, followed by the boys' race at 10:40 a.m.

This year's field will include runners from Great Bend, Goddard, Goddard-Eisenhower, Hays, Hutchinson, Newton, Salina Central, Salina South, and Valley Center.

Great Bend Tennis just misses out on WAC title, places second

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs won 11 one-score games last season, a big reason why they wound up in the Super Bowl for a third straight year.

They have lost all three of their one-score games this season.

The margin between winning and losing in the NFL is small, as Chiefs coach Andy Reid so often says, and the difference often comes down to the smallest of things — like penalties. That was evident on&nbsp;Monday night in Jacksonville, where the Chiefs were flagged so often that linebacker Drue Tranquill said he felt as if there was yellow laundry on the field on every play.

He wasn't far off. The Chiefs were penalized 13 times for 109 yards&nbsp;in the 31-28 loss.

“Whether I agree with them or don't agree with them doesn't matter. They called them,” Reid said. “You have that many penalties, you give up field position, you can out-stat them to death, but it doesn't matter. It's the score that matters.”

By contrast, the Jaguars were penalized four times for 25 yards. The only other time in the last four seasons in which a team was penalized at least nine times for 84 more yards than their opponent? The Chiefs when they played Jacksonville in 2023.

Two penalties wiped out long returns on special teams. Another came after Harrison Butker inexplicably kicked out of bounds after the Chiefs had driven 86 yards for the go-ahead TD with 1:45 to go. And another on Chamarri Conner that wiped out a pick by Bryan Cook in the end zone, and instead set up Jacksonville for the eventual winning touchdown.

In fact, the Chiefs were flagged for defensive holding on that play, too, when Trevor Lawrence was tripped to the ground by his own lineman, scrambled to his feet, evaded the defense and scored with 23 seconds left; the Jaguars declined the penalty.

“We’ve executed at certain points in the game and looked really good and then we kind of crush ourselves with penalties and mistakes and interceptions and fumbles or whatever that is,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. “It’s just — we’ve kind of done that to ourselves all year long. It’s been one guy here or there and in this league.”

Yes, the 99-yard pick-6 that Mahomes threw during the game was devastating. So was the Chiefs' inability to prevent Lawrence from scrambling for big yardage. But the Chiefs nevertheless had a chance to win with less than two minutes to go.

Instead, a team that went 17-0 in games decided by eight points or fewer from Week 17 of the 2023 season through the end of last season lost its third such game in a row this season. And now, the Chiefs are toting a 2-3 record into another tough matchup with the Detroit Lions on Sunday night at Arrowhead Stadium.

“We got to do better,” Mahomes said simply. “We’ve lost too many games already. We got to find a way to be better.”

The Chiefs' offense has found its rhythm since Xavier Worthy's return from a shoulder injury two weeks ago. Mahomes threw for 318 yards against the Jaguars, and Kansas City piled up 158 yards on the ground.

Effort. Whether it was offensive players giving up on Jacksonville linebacker Devin Lloyd's pick-6 or defensive tackle Chris Jones standing around — essentially taking the play off — when Lawrence scored the decisive touchdown, the Chiefs displayed a startling lack of effort on far too many plays Monday night.

WR Tyquan Thornton continues to make big plays, catching three passes for 90 yards against the Jaguars. And he was one of the few Chiefs players who gave everything trying to chase down Lloyd and prevent his 99-yard touchdown return.

Special teams coordinator Dave Toub. His group has made far too many mistakes this season, from missed field goals and PATs to costly penalties, perhaps none bigger than Butker's kick out of bounds in the final minutes against Jacksonville.

LT Josh Simmons was sick before the game but played the entire way.

62-4 — That had been the Chiefs' record with Mahomes at QB when leading by at least 14 points before Monday night. Reid has now lost 18 such games, the most by any coach in NFL history.

Chiefs' penalty woes continue in loss to Jaguars, their third straight one-score defeat

NEW YORK (AP) — When the New York Yankees needed someone to save them Tuesday night, Aaron Judge practically put on a cape. Captain clutch, indeed. In a do-it-all performance for the ages, Judge hit a tying homer and drove in four runs as the Yankees staved off elimination by rallying past the Toronto Blue Jays 9-6 in Game 3 of their AL Division Series. Judge went 3 for 4 with an intentional walk and scored three times, also making pivotal plays with his glove and legs. Down by five early, New York scored eight unanswered runs to prevent a three-game sweep and push the best-of-five playoff series to Game 4 on Wednesday night in the Bronx.

DETROIT (AP) — Cal Raleigh hit a two-run homer, Eugenio Suarez and J.P. Crawford had solo shots and the Seattle Mariners beat the Detroit Tigers 8-4 on Tuesday night to take a 2-1 lead in the AL Division Series. The Mariners are within a win of their first AL Championship Series since 2001. Their first chance to advance is on Wednesday afternoon in Game 4 at Comerica Park and if necessary, another opportunity awaits on Friday back in Seattle for a decisive Game 5. Seattle’s Logan Gilbert gave up one run on four hits while striking out seven and walking none over six innings.

Joe Flacco is on the move again. The Cincinnati Bengals acquired the veteran quarterback from the Cleveland Browns along with a 2026 sixth-round draft pick on Tuesday for a fifth-round pick next season. The 40-year-old Flacco gives Cincinnati another option. Jake Browning has struggled since replacing Joe Burrow, who is out with a toe injury sustained in Week 2. Flacco started the first four games for the Browns this season, completing 93 of 160 passes for 815 yards and two touchdowns with six interceptions. Rookie Dillon Gabriel replaced Flacco in the starting lineup. Rookie Shedeur Sanders now moves up to the backup spot.

The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the team did not announce the fine. The NFL has been in contact with the NFLPA and there will be no further punishment for Gannon. The coach said on Monday that he had apologized to Demercado.

Kansas State head coach&nbsp;Chris Klieman, in an impassioned and lengthy response to questions regarding the Wildcats' struggles at the midway point of the season, said during his weekly news conference on Monday that, "I've got to be, and I'm going to be, the rock for this team. I'll take all the hits, and all the bullets, and all the things, because that's my job, and I have no problem doing that because if those kids keep laying it on the line, I'll live with the results."

"I know the results are going to change," he continued. "I know it's going to continue to be better."

Klieman's comments came two days after K-State suffered a heartbreaking 35-34 loss at Baylor at McLane Stadium in Waco, Texas, on Saturday. The loss was the latest in a line of one-score defeats that leave the Wildcats, 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the Big 12 Conference, with ground to cover in the league standings as they prepare this week to face TCU, 4-1 and 1-1, in Saturday's 2:30 p.m. kickoff at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

Five of K-State's first six games this season have been decided by one score, as the first three games were by a field goal, and the game at Arizona was a six-point loss. That was prior Saturday's gut-wrenching defeat in which Baylor scored the game's final points on a 53-yard field goal with 31 seconds remaining.

K-State is the only team in the FBS to already have five games decided by one possession. The Wildcats were 4-2 last season when the final margin was eight or less points and they are 1-4 this season.

"We did some good things on offense, on defense, on special teams, but when you lose a tight ballgame, those things get magnified, because you had to make one more play in all those areas," Klieman said in lamenting the loss to the Bears. "When we beat UCF, it kind of gets glossed over that maybe we weren't as good in an area."

It's a results-based business, and right now we're not getting the results. Some of that we have to fix as coaches, for sure, and I'm in charge of that. Some of that, players have to make plays."&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Klieman mentioned that he and the coaching staff spoke about a variety of topics on Sunday and again on Monday morning.

"It's still not good enough, and we talked about that yesterday and as a staff this morning," Klieman said. "We need to do some things to help us out a little bit defensively."

Another topic was the offense's propensity to throw passes to pass catchers running short-yardage routes in third-and-6 and third-and-7 situations.

"Without a doubt, if you throw those balls – which you're going to have to at times – you have to have the ability to turn your shoulders up, get vertical, make a guy miss because it's still a matchup game. In my opinion, we haven't thrown those very well where the guy has a chance to make a play," Klieman said. "We're catching it by the marker or making a poor route combination or poor read. It's something that we talked about a bunch yesterday with the offense. Some of our underneath mesh stuff, getting the ball toward the sideline and not having the ability to catch it and turn it up.

"If you can catch it and turn it up, good players are going to make plays, but we haven't put ourselves into good enough position to do that. We have to be better there."&nbsp; 

Klieman said that quarterback&nbsp;Avery Johnson&nbsp;"played maybe his best game last week against Baylor."

Johnson completed 64.4% of his passes for a career-high 344 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, and he added 10 carries for 72 yards and one score. He threw for the most yards by a K-State quarterback since Jake Waters passed for 400 yards at West Virginia in 2014. But even Johnson's career day was dampened by a costly pick-six during the Bears' fourth-quarter comeback.

"He was on point," Klieman said." He threw the ball really well. Take the one play aside where we don't pick up a pressure (on the pick-six), and he wishes he had that play back, but I mean, he threw some strikes. He's running it when we need him to run it, but we're not going to give it to him 15 times in a designed run game. That's why we went to the two-quarterback stuff. He's the best quarterback for a reason. We're not going to run him 15 times a game.

"Avery's playing at a level in the last few weeks. That's good enough for us to win, but whether it's complementing him a little bit more, making some plays on defense, or finishing drives —&nbsp;I know he's frustrated we didn't finish that drive as well to end the game."

And just when it appeared K-State would put some points on the board as wide receiver&nbsp;Jayce Brown&nbsp;caught a pass and appeared destined to reach the end zone —&nbsp;until a Baylor defender ripped Brown's helmet off. The defender was penalized for a face mask and officials ruled that the play stopped at the spot of the infraction, thus wiping away the Johnson-to-Brown heroics.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Klieman indicated that it was one instance in a myriad of frustrating moments against the Bears.

"All the stuff happens really fast, they mark the penalty off and go for play, but it's no different than the interception or a long pass play, a 53-yard field goal, a blocked 56-yard field goal," Kliemans said.

But all eyes were on a 56-yard field goal attempt by sophomore&nbsp;Luis Rodriguez, who is playing his first season at the Division I level, after the Wildcats were stuck with 5 seconds left in the game.

"Oh, we were out of his range," Klieman said. "I was so mad because I saw the flags that had been limp all day start to blow a little bit, and we knew exactly what they were going to do, because they'd done it against two walk-off field goals that they'd gone against. We knew they were going to put nine guys on the side and push everybody back and get their hands up. Luis had to try and drive the ball, and it was the only way to get it to 56. His range was about 50, and then the wind picked up. But I didn't think we had enough time to take a chance at a quick out. They'd probably had everybody at the sticks."

And so, the Wildcats suffered another narrow loss.

Klieman indicated that the responsibility falls upon everyone.

"You got to make plays, you got to make plays," Klieman said. "That's the bottom line. In one-score games, you have opportunities to make plays, and when you make them, you end up winning those games. It's not one thing. It's a culmination of a lot of things, and it's not one player — it's offense, defense and special teams. In this league, you're going to have a lot of one-score games. That's just the way it is. Last week is an indication that we didn't make those plays."

Klieman believes that the Wildcats are closer to turning the corner. K-State entered the season as one of 10 Power 4 teams to win at least nine games in each of the past three seasons, so the first six games of this regular season have come as a shock to the Wildcats.

Now they have six games remaining in the regular season to win some games.

"Of course, it's stressful," Klieman said. "I'm the leader of this whole thing. Leadership is unifying people; it's not how much we can tear people down. Leadership isn't always sunny and 70 — it's a struggle. I know those kids want to win, we've seen the last two weeks, all of us, how much we've improved in how we're doing thigs with more energy, more physicality. That doesn't guarantee success, but it gives us an opportunity to be successful. I saw a different road team at Baylor than I saw at Arizona. That gives me some belief and confidence that we're doing things the right way.

"Now we just need to make some final adjustments as coaches and as players to get over the hump."

Close to Turning the Corner

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Trevor Lawrence tripped and fell to the ground, stumbled trying to get up, finally got back on his feet and then&nbsp;scrambled for a 1-yard touchdown&nbsp;with 23 seconds remaining — turning a comical miscue into an improbable score — and the Jacksonville Jaguars beat Kansas City 31-28 on Monday night.

“What a crazy, crazy finish,” said Lawrence, who was serenaded by teammates in the locker room to celebrate his 26th birthday.

The chaos ended with the Jaguars (4-1) snapping an eight-game losing streak to the Chiefs (2-3) and matching their win total from last season.

Patrick Mahomes, who drove the Chiefs into position to take a 28-24 lead with 1:45 to play, had a final chance with 16 seconds remaining. But he failed to muster much of a threat, and his final throw was incomplete, setting off a raucous celebration for the home team.

“We like to make things very interesting,” Jaguars coach Liam Coen said. “But the resiliency is really what I think this team has."

Lawrence ran for two touchdowns on the night and also threw for a score, helping balance a performance that included two turnovers.

He was perfect when it mattered most for the Jaguars. Lawrence dropped a precision pass to Brian Thomas Jr. for a 33-yard gain on the go-ahead drive and then hit Dyami Brown for another big gain. Chamarri Conner was flagged for pass interference against Thomas on the next play, setting up Lawrence's trip and score.

Early offense propels Barton women's 2-1 win over Seward County

Enduring gusting south winds that reached 25 miles per hour, the No. 9 Barton Community College men's soccer team remained poised Sunday afternoon, striking twice in each half to post a 4-1 win over Seward County Community College at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City.

The victory improves the Cougars to 3-2-1 in conference play and 8-3-2 overall, while the Saints drop to 0-5-0 in league action and 4-5-0 on the season. Barton will have the week away from competition before Saturday's travel to Garden City Community College for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff at Broncbuster Stadium.
