second in rebounding nationally, and is also 10th nationally in
blocks with 2.4. His former coach at IMG Academy, where Edey really
learned how to play the game as a teen, can barely believe the
ascension.

Eric Bieniemy brushed off questions about not getting an NFL head
coaching job and says he's embracing his new challenge as offensive
coordinator of the Washington Commanders. Bieniemy at his
introductory news conference also defended his decision to leave the
Kansas City Chiefs after 10 years and two Super Bowl championships
and explained why this job was the right fit for him. The longtime
Chiefs offensive coordinator interviewed for 15 different head jobs
in recent years. But coaching two-time league MVP Patrick Mahomes and
working under offensive coach Andy Reid clouded what Bieniemy might
be responsible for. He will now have a chance to show what he can do
calling plays in Washington.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo.
(AP) — A person with knowledge of the hire tells The Associated
Press that new Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has hired
ex-Broncos head coach Vance Joseph as his defensive coordinator. The
hiring comes after a deliberate search that included fellow former
head coaches Rex Ryan and Matt Patricia. Joseph coached the Broncos
from 2017-18, compiling an 11-21 record. He spent the past four
seasons as the Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator.

Major League Baseball is introducing bigger bases this season as part
of a flurry of changes designed to put more action and athleticism
back in the game. The bases are expanding from 15-inch squares to 18
inches, which cuts down the distance between them by 4 1/2 inches.
The distance between third and home and home and first was trimmed by
3 inches. With the new bases, major league teams could try a more
aggressive approach on the basepaths. The bases also could help
prevent injuries.

Fla. (AP) — Billy Horschel has never won a PGA Tour event in his
home state of Florida. His quest to change that is off to a fine
start. Horschel shot a 5-under 65 on Thursday, tying him with Joseph
Bramlett for the first-round lead in the Honda Classic at PGA
National. Bramlett had a bogey-free round. Horschel had six birdies
and one bogey. Pierceson Coody and Justin Suh were one shot back.
Coody is playing his first PGA Tour event as a professional on a
sponsor exemption. He's a two-time winner in 15 starts on the Korn
Ferry Tour since turning pro last summer.

Mexico (AP) — LIV Golf embarks on its second season with more
emphasis on the team concept and a few new faces. Dustin Johnson is
coming off a big year with the Saudi-funded rival league. He amassed
just over $35.6 million in eight tournaments. There was minor
movement among the teams. LIV Golf was not able to add big stars to
its roster during the offseason. The highest-ranked player was Thomas
Pieters of Belgium at No. 35 in the world. The first tournament
starts Friday at Mayakoba. The Mexican resort hosted a PGA Tour event
in the fall.

All four Lady Panther wrestlers are still alive into the final day of the season Saturday at Hartman Arena in Park City. Third-ranked junior Daizy Gomez advanced to the Class 6-5A state semifinals before getting pinned. The other three Great Bend wrestlers lost their first matches but won in the consolation rounds.

Wrestling at 125 pounds, Gomez pinned her first opponent in the first period, then avenged an early-season loss to second-ranked Addi Broxterman of Washburn Rural in round two with another first-period pin. After a scoreless first period, Gomez fell behind 8-0 in the second period before getting pinned by Garden City fifth-ranked sophomore Maya Tarbet in the third period of the semifinals. Gomez is just one win away from the third-place match with a possible rematch against top-ranked Ariana De La Rose of Dodge City set for the consolation semifinals.

Freshman Natalee Daniels came up just shy of an upset against third-ranked Alison Coykendall of Salina Central in round one. Coykendall advanced 10-8, and was eventually beat by second-ranked Druzzla Johnson of Wichita West in the semifinals. Daniels pinned fourth-ranked Trinity Williams in the first round on the back side.

Senior Katie Kuhlman went the distance in a 9-0 loss to third-ranked freshman Alayna Slifer of Manhattan in round one. Kuhlman pinned her Bonner Springs opponent to stay alive on the back side.

Freshman Kaylea McMullen was pinned 69 seconds into her state debut at 120 pounds against fourth-ranked Katina Keosybounheuang from Emporia. McMullen pinned her Bonner Spring opponent on the back side to stay alive.

Garden City jumped out to a healthy team lead with 86 points, followed by reigning champion Dodge City with 66 points.

Other area wrestlers at the Class 4-1A State Championships in Salina: Russell sophomore Jaden Ney, ranked No. 2, pinned her first three opponents to reach the state finals at 135 pounds. She knocked off top-ranked Wendy Candia of Pratt and fifth-ranked Zoey Kessler of Cherryvale to reach the finals.

Hoisington senior Kiana Grandclair, ranked No. 6 at 120 pounds, pinned her first opponent before being pinned by second-ranked Addison Saporito of Columbus. Larned junior Reese Watkins opened the bracket with a 9-7 win, then defeated Pratt 8-4 to advance to the semifinals where she was pinned by Saporito, who will wrestle for a state title Saturday. 

Hoisington junior Daijah Jones won her first match by forfeit at 130 pounds before losing a 10-8 decision against second-ranked Brooklyn Burenheide of Rock Creek, who will wrestle for a state title Saturday.

Hoisington senior Tally Wikum pinned her first opponent before getting pinned by top-ranked Audrey Darnell of Baldwin in the quarterfinals. Darnell will face off against Ellis junior Kaydawn Haag in the finals Saturday at 140 pounds.

Hoisington junior Lyrica Orosco, ranked No. 4 at 145 pounds, opened with a 5-2 decision against Rossville before getting pinned by top-ranked and unbeaten Kammie Schanz of Mulvane in the quarterfinals.

Larned sophomore Liliana McKenna went 1-1 on day one, getting pinned in round one and pinning her opponent on the back side at 110 pounds.

Hoisington sophomore Bailey George and Lyons sophomore each dropped their first two matches at 100 pounds. Former Lady Cardinal Sheena Gocela, now wrestling for Winfield, remains unbeaten with a spot in the state finals Saturday.

Lyons junior Alexa Guzman lost her first two matches at 135 pounds. Ellsworth sophomore Riley Rodriguez lost both of her matches to open the 170-pound bracket. Hoisington freshman Amerie Hinz finished at 0-2 at 235 pounds.

Area girls' state wrestling results: Day 1

The Lady Panther bowlers are headed back to state after a regional runner-up finish in Hutchinson Wednesday morning. That means Great Bend will again take a team to state after a third-place finish in 2022. Caleb McNett was the lone individual qualifier for the Panther boys.

Salina South won the girls' side with 3,105 pins, followed by Great Bend with 3,084, and Buhler in the final qualifying spot with 3,019. No other team reached 2,600 pins.

The individual competition featured a pair of top-three bowlers from state a year ago. Reigning Class 5-1A state champion Kaylin Wahlmeier opened slow at 161, but dominated the field with a 248 and 247 for a 656 series. Salina South's Aviana Ordonez shot a 609 for second. The Lady Cougars had three of the top-four series on the day.

Zoey Mayberry opened with a 226 and finished with a 575 series for seventh overall. Aliyah Fryberger placed 11th with a 202 middle game for a 546 series, just seven pins out of the top 10. Sahara Rziha was consistent for a 496 series in 16th, and Emilee Nelson finished just two pins behind her in 17th despite a 122 to open. She finished with games of 222 and 150. Paige Heine's middle game of 226 was better than her other two games combined for a 460 series in 22nd.

In boys' action, Hutchinson's Brody Ummel opened with games of 266 and 235 to win the regional title by 25 pins with a 698. Great Bend's McNett qualified for state at 11th overall, rolling games of 200, 223, and 198 for a 621 series, just three pins out of 10th.

Jalen Daniels closed out his Panther career with a 203 for a 528 series in 28th overall. Jordan Manning topped out at 191 for a 510 series in 31st. Dylan Ferguson finished with a 202 final game and 488 series in 36th. Kamron Stude rolled games of 154, 175, and 158 for a 487 series in 38th. Kolby Burnham shot a 181 in his final game to finish just four pins behind Stude in 40th with a 483. 

The Class 5-1A State Bowling Championships will be held Thursday, March 2, at Wichita's Northrock Lanes.

series with Kansas in the Dillons Sunflower Showdown with a 63-45 win

the last 48 meetings in the series. K-State (16-12, 5-10 Big 12) held
Kansas (16-10, 6-9) to its lowest offensive output of the season with
45 points and a field goal percentage of 31.4 percent. The Wildcats
were led on Wednesday night by sophomore guard Serena Sundell with a
game-high 24 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 8-of-9 from the foul
line. Over the last eight games, Sundell has scored 20 or more points
four times.

STILLWATER, Okla.
(AP) — Anna Gret Asi capped Oklahoma State’s best 3-point
shooting night of the season with a clutch, tightly contested shot in
the final minute and the Cowgirls topped No. 20 Iowa State 73-68 in a
showdown for third place in the Big 12 Conference. Asi made the score
71-66 as the shot clock expired with 49 seconds to play, making
Oklahoma State 8 of 12 behind the line. The Cyclones had a chance to

of MLB’s most visible rule changes for 2023 is a sizable curtailing
of infield shifts. The practice had grown exponentially over the past
several years and has been partially blamed for a steady league-wide
decline in batting average. The new rule states that all four
infielders must have both feet within the outer boundary of the
infield — and two infielders must be on each side of second base —
when the pitch is delivered. MLB has also mandated that the infield
dirt cutout have uniform dimensions in all 30 ballparks. The outfield
edge of the dirt must be 95 feet from the front of the pitching
rubber.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla.
(AP) — Carlos Beltrán refused to discuss his role in the Houston
Astros cheating scandal, preferring to concentrate on his new role
with the New York Mets. Beltrán was hired by the Mets in November
2019 to replace Mickey Callaway as manager. But the team announced
Beltrán’s departure the following January without him managing a
game. Beltrán’s departure was announced three days after he was
the only Astros player mentioned by name in Major League Baseball’s
report that concluded that Houston broke rules by using electronics
to steal signs en route to the 2017 World Series title.

Honda Classic. And then someone will be writing a big check to take
over the Honda Classic. It’s expected that there will be a
tournament at PGA National in 2024 and beyond, but this weekend will

sponsorship ends with this PGA Tour event. Potential successors will
be in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, to decide if they want to buy the
naming rights. Only three of the game's top 20-ranked players are in
the field this week.

Reigning NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, and Marcus Mariota
will be part of a Netflix documentary series debuting this summer.
“Quarterback” is the first partnership between the league and the
streaming service. NFL Films, Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions
and Mahomes’ 2PM Productions will produce the series. The series
followed Mahomes, Cousins, and Mariota throughout the past season. It
also marked the first time the NFL allowed quarterbacks to be mic’d
up for every game. Wednesday’s announcement is part of a busy start
to the year for Netflix with sports docuseries. The fifth season of
the popular “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” franchise launches on
Friday.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State coach Jerome Tang leaped onto the courtside table and pumped his fists, then landed a spectacular dismount, before climbing into the student section and joining in the “Wabash Cannonball” dance to celebrate another ranked win.

Keyontae Johnson scored 25 points, Markquis Nowell added 14 points and 10 assists, and the No. 14 Wildcats followed a long first-half slump with a big second-half run to beat ninth-ranked Baylor 75-65 on Tuesday night.

In doing so, they gave their first-year coach a season sweep of Tang's former team and his longtime mentor, Scott Drew.

“I tried to tell y’all I’m athletic,” said Tang, who spent 19 years on the Baylor bench and helped bring a national title to Waco, Texas. “They were arguably the hottest team in the league, except the second half of the last game and this game.”

Cam Carter added 10 points for the Wildcats (21-7, 9-6 Big 12), who trailed 34-31 at the break before their 18-4 charge gave them control. They coasted from there to a school record-tying seventh win over a ranked team this season.

The last two — against Iowa State and Baylor — came after the Wildcats had lost four of five.

“I thought it was another typical Big 12 game,” Drew said. “K-State played like you're supposed to on your home court. I thought Keyontae Johnson, we really had trouble matching up with him pretty much all night, and then Nowell struggled from the field but 10 assists, zero turnovers. That's why they're first-team all-leaguers.”

Keyonte George hit six 3-pointers and scored 23 points to lead Baylor (20-8, 9-6), which had won seven of its last eight against the Wildcats and three straight in Manhattan. LJ Cryer added four 3s and finished with 16 points.

“You know, it comes back to all of us. It's a team effort,” George said. “We just have to play harder, including myself.”

Baylor was coming off an 87-71 loss at No. 3 Kansas on Saturday in which the Bears were phenomenal in the first half, building a 17-point lead, and dreadful in the second, when they were outscored 55-26 while looking listless and lost.

The Bears' kept that Jekyll-and-Hyde act going Tuesday night.

Their sluggish finish in Lawrence carried over to the opening 13 minutes in Manhattan, when the Wildcats were able to methodically build a 24-13 lead. But after Drew called a timeout, his guys answered with a 3-pointer fueled 21-3 run over the next 6-plus minutes, allowing Baylor to take a 34-31 advantage into the break.

Cryer did most of the damage, going 4 of 5 from beyond the arc and scoring 11 first-half points.

“We did a really good job early and we messed up on some ball-screen coverages and they were able to make some 3s,” Tang said. “At halftime the team said, ‘Coach, if we do this it’ll make it better for us.' And the fact that they were thinking about how the problems were taking place and they came up with the solution, that was big time.”

Whatever the change, it certainly worked.

The Bears still led 40-37 in the opening minutes of the second half when Johnson scored back-to-back baskets to give Kansas State the lead. David N'Guessan kept the charge going, and it eventually reached 18-4 when Carter took a turnover by the Bears' Caleb Lohner for a dunk that made it 55-44 with just over 8 minutes left in the game.

“It's hard to stop transition offense, especially off turnovers,” Carter said. “We capitalized on that.”

The Wildcats stretched their lead to as many as 14 points before wrapping up the season sweep of the Bears.

“It started in practice,” Nowell said. “Whenever we're in practice, we come with that energy. We have a good scout, we play well. We've been focusing on practice a lot more, focusing on the defensive side, and we got two wins to show for it.”

Baylor struggled to find some help for George and Cryer on offense. Adam Flagler missed his first nine shots and finished with four points on 1-for-13 shooting, and Jalen Bridges had just six points while dealing with foul trouble all night.

Kansas State overcame a poor night from the 3-point arc (4 of 21) by dominating the guard-heavy Bears with a 42-16 edge in the paint. Many of those points came in transition, where the Wildcats had a 19-5 advantage off turnovers.

Baylor returns home to play eighth-ranked Texas on Saturday.

Kansas State visits Oklahoma State the same day.

— Aroldis Chapman can earn up to $8.75 million as part of his
one-year contract with the Kansas City Royals if he regains a job as
a regular closer. The left-hander, who turns 35 on Feb. 28, is
guaranteed $3.75 million under the deal announced Jan. 27. Chapman
can earn $2.5 million based on games and $2.5 million based on games
finished. Chapman averaged 100.7 mph on his fastball in 2016 but
dropped below 100 mph in 2018 and was at a career-low 97.5 last
season. He was 4-4 with a 4.46 ERA last season for the Yankees.

limiting the parts of the game fans find particularly tedious. The
clocks will count down from 30 seconds between batters. Between
pitches, it will be 15 seconds with nobody on and 20 if there’s a
baserunner. There are also limits on pickoff attempts that could help
potential base stealers.

The PGA Tour is coming off two big weeks with Scottie Scheffler
winning in raucous Phoenix and Jon Rahm at Riviera. Tiger Woods

with two loud weeks on the PGA Tour, with two more to follow. AP Golf

signed six players, none prominent. It also had four executives
leave. The LIV season starts Friday in the Mexican resort of

high-tech golf league become reality. The ceremonial groundbreaking
for the arena that will house the league that’s being called TGL
was held Tuesday at Palm Beach State College. Woods and McIlroy are
among the co-founders and were there for the first step of actual
construction. Play will begin early next year. Woods and McIlroy so
far have 11 players committed to the league. Besides them, the league
will include world No. 1 Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Adam Scott, Collin
Morikawa, Matt Fitzpatrick, Max Homa, Billy Horschel, Justin Rose and
Xander Schauffele.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.
(AP) — Police say Alabama basketball star Brandon Miller brought a
teammate the gun that was used in a fatal shooting near campus.
Tuscaloosa Police investigator Brandon Culpepper testified Tuesday
that Miller brought Darius Miles’ gun to him on the night of the
shooting after Miles texted him and asked him to do so. The
allegation of Miller’s involvement on Jan. 15 came during a
preliminary hearing for Miles and Michael Davis, who face capital
murder charges for the death of 23-year-old Jamea Harris. Alabama
coach Nate Oats says the team has been aware of Miller's alleged
involvement and he was just in “the wrong spot at the wrong time."

Every coach wants his team to be bowling its best at the end of the season. Monday in Hays, the Lady Panther bowling team not only put up its best score of the season, but also the best series score in school history. Great Bend defeated Hays 2,626 to 895 in the regular-season finale. The Panther boys won 2,447 to 2,188.

The Lady Panthers swept the top-six series against the new Hays program. Kaylin Wahlmeier was again cruising towards 700 with games of 257 and 244 before coming up just shy with a 191 in her final game for a 692 series. Sahara Rziha was big all day with games of 258, 221, and 200 for a 679 series. Aliyah Fryberger had the high-game of 269 in her middle game, finishing with a 203 for a 633 series.

Zoey Mayberry was also hot early with games of 229 and 222 en route to a 611 series. Paige Heine topped out at 172 for a 478 series, and Emilee Nelson rolled a 427.

The Panther boys had five of the top-six series. Jalen Daniels dominated the field with games of 242, 205, and 225 for a 672 series. The rest of the Panthers packed up. Caleb McNett finished with a 211 game and 581 series for third overall. Dylan Ferguson rolled a 211 in his middle game and finished just two pins behind McNett in fourth with a 579. Kamron Stude was consistent with a 201 and 197 to finish with a 577 series. Kolby Burnham finished strong with a 209 and 521 series for eighth, and Jordan Manning opened with a 184 for a 492 series in 10th.

Lady Cougars remain at No. 17 in NJCAA Top 25 Poll

The air is getting a little thinner for Ellinwood senior Britton Dutton as he continues to climb the state's basketball history ranks. Entering Friday's game at Otis-Bison, just 49 prep players, boys or girls, in state history had scored at least 2,000 career points. Phillipsburg senior Taryn Sides reached that mark Friday in Hoxie, and Dutton scored 43 points in three quarters to become the 51st player in state history to accomplish the feat.

"When I was a freshman, I was setting goals," Dutton said. "One of them was to reach 1,000 points by the end of my high school career. I think getting 2,000 is just really cool."

Reaching 1,000 career points is the mark of a good high school basketball player. Dutton entered Friday night 38 points shy of 2,000, but that was hardly an obstacle. The Eagles improved to 18-1 with an 89-33 win. Dutton made 18 of his 27 shots in the game to reach the milestone in the third quarter.

"I knew I just had to be aggressive the whole game, from the start," he said. "I know I can score that much. Coach Derek (Joiner) told me exactly what I was thinking I needed to do, just be aggressive and really just play normal."

Many of the 50 scorers to reach the mark ahead of Dutton had extra state tournament games in their careers. Dutton has not yet played in a state game, but has been blessed with good health to make the most of all his regular-season and sub-state games.

"It's really an incredible accomplishment, especially after I have read how exclusive of a group it really is over the 100 plus years of Kansas high school basketball," Joiner said. "It makes sense when you think about it further. We only get 20 regular-season games in Kansas, so you have to be good as a freshman. Most kids get around 85-90 games in their career, so your average has to be 22-23 points per game for four years. Brit was fortunate to only have to miss one game in his career thus far. You have to be reliable and good at the same time. And our teams have been good all four years."

Ellinwood has posted a 74-14 record in Dutton's three-plus seasons. As a junior, he surpassed 1,400 career points to break the EHS record of 1,390 points, set by Todd Robins in 1986. He holds the school's single-game scoring record with 48 points, and has four of the top-five scoring games on record at EHS. Earlier this year, Dutton signed a letter of intent to continue his career at The University of Illinois-Springfield.

Ellinwood closes out the regular season Tuesday against Ness City. Joiner and Dutton wanted to get the personal feat out of the way ahead of Senior Night.

"So Brit might have been a bit more aggressive than normal versus Otis," Joiner said. "But if you watch the game, he still plays within the parameters of the game and nothing feels forced. In fact, I have had a lot college coaches and coaching friends that tell me he needs to look to score more throughout his career. But Brit plays within the game, which is why I think he's so efficient. He's averaging 26.9 points per game on 17.3 shot attempts per game. So knowing how he accomplished something so rare by just playing within himself and never really forcing the issue adds to the feat."

Fifth-ranked Ellinwood will be the No. 1 seed in a tough Sterling substate that includes No. 3 Moundridge, No. 7 Inman, and No. 8 Sterling, all with at least 15 wins on the season. The Eagles have fallen victim to Sterling in each of the past three postseasons, and the real goal, Dutton said, is to get the team to state.

"Truly just working hard every day and getting better at the things we need to get better at," he said. "Getting better at defense, esecially, because that's the big thing that's going to help us win."

Dutton and Sides surpassed 2,000 points Friday night. Greeley County senior Jaxson Brandl, who helped the Jackrabbits to the Class 1A, Div. II state title last March at Barton Community College, accomplished the feat earlier this month. Pawnee Heights senior Alec Carlson should surpass 1,900 points but will need some big games down the stretch to reach 2,000. With 2,005 career points, Dutton needs just 11 points to surpass Minneapolis' Ryan Wedel at No. 20 on the state's all-time scoring list.

Kansas moves up to No. 3, Kansas State at No. 14 in AP Poll

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Big 12 scoring leader Jalen Wilson was struggling with his shot for third-ranked Kansas, and standout freshman Gradey Dick didn't score again after reaching 19 points only two minutes into the second half.

The Jayhawks, in pursuit of their 21st Big 12 regular-season title, still never trailed after halftime and extended the league's longest active winning streak to five in a row, beating 24th-ranked TCU 63-58 on Monday night.

“I’ve said all along, we’ve got five guys that can all go out there and play and take over the game. And that’s the beauty of our team," said Wilson, who had 13 rebounds while making only 3-of-11 shots for seven points, more than 13 below his season average. “We’re all going to have some type of effort to win. ... That’s part of a championship team."

Damion Baugh missed a potential tying 3-pointer with five seconds left for TCU (18-10, 7-8 Big 12). Shahada Wells missed a follow-up layup before Kevin McCullar, who finished with 15 points, was fouled and made two free throws to seal it for the Jayhawks (23-5, 11-4).

Kansas began the night tied with idle eighth-ranked Texas for the conference lead. Coach Bill Self's reigning national champions have won seven of eight games since a three-game losing streak that included a 23-point home loss to the Horned Frogs.

“We haven’t accomplished jack, but we've put ourselves in a favorable position to maybe do something,” Self said. “Everybody talked about our sky's falling when we lost three in a row. In this league, that can happen easily. But we’ve recovered pretty good since then."

Not even an appearance from Heisman Trophy runner-up Max Duggan could get the Frogs over the hump. They were within 56-53 with 6:07 left when the four-year starting quarterback, still in his tuxedo after receiving the Davey O’Brien Award in a ceremony about four miles from campus, waved the crowd into a frenzy while going to a courtside seat.

“He looked good tonight with the tux on,” Self said. "I’m just glad he didn’t get here any earlier.”
