The teams looked to be evenly matched on paper. It played out that way on the field Tuesday evening at the Great Bend Sports Complex. Great Bend erased a 3-run deficit in game one and won 5-4 in walk-off fashion. The Indians took game two by the same score.

Already leading 2-1, Hays took advantage of an error in the sixth inning to pull ahead 4-1. The Panthers answered with a lead-off triple from Carson Umphres, who scored on a single from Owen Kaiser. JJ Grove singled, and the pair advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Bradley Hopkins for the first out in the sixth. With another out in the books, senior Edwin Chavez singled to center field to score Kaiser and Grove and even the score at 4-4.&nbsp;

After a fast top of the seventh, freshman Ian Premer walked to open the bottom half of the frame. Umphres came up with another triple to drive in Premer for the walk-off win.

Umphres had three hits in the win, including the lone extra-base hits, both triples. Grove singled twice, and Chavez had the lone hit to drive in two and score once.

Tyler Stuhlsatz kept the Indian bats in check with one earned run on 10 hits and seven strikeouts in six innings. Hunter Herrman picked up the win, pitching the final three outs without allowing a hit and striking out one.

The Panthers managed to tie the score at 4-4 in the fifth inning of game two. That score stood until the top of the seventh when Hays scored on a pair of singles and an error. Kaiser was hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the seventh, but the next three Panthers were retired to end the game.

Umphres had two more hits, including another triple. Stuhlsatz and Koehn Ribordy each had two hits, including a two-bagger from Ribordy.

Umphres picked up the loss on the bump after allowing two earned runs on eight hits and striking out three in 6.1 innings of work. Herrman struck out the final two Hays batters.

Great Bend moves to 4-4 on the season heading into next Tuesday's game at McPherson.

Panther baseball wins with walk off, splits with Hays

The Great Bend tennis team featured a different look at the Hays Invitational on Monday. The Panthers scored 22 points to finish fifth out of the five schools in action. The host Indians won the meet with 36 points, followed by Liberal, Phillipsburg, and Salina South, all separated by just two points with 26, 25, and 24, respectively.

Returning state qualifier Brendyn Schroeder moved out of the No. 1 singles slot to play No. 1 doubles alongside Jordan Manning. The pair finished at 3-2 overall, with an 8-5 loss to Hays, and an 8-6 loss to Salina South. 

"It was (Brendyn's) first-ever high school doubles match, just to get him some competition at the net, get him more comfortable, get him ready for some matches that he's going to have to go to the net if he wants to win," said Panther tennis coach Chris Manning. "Everybody played well, and we held our own up there."

That meant Marcos Castanon moved into the No. 1 singles spot, where he finished at 1-4, including an 8-0 win against the secondary Hays team. Jacob Parks went 3-2 at No. 2 singles, beating both Hays opponents 8-2, and downing Salina South 8-6.

Kaden Dienes and Cameron Harbaugh defeated Liberal 8-5 and Phillipsburg 8-3 for their two wins on the afternoon.

The varsity squad takes some time off before returning to action at Dodge City on Thursday, April 20.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Andrew Heaney tied an AL record by striking out nine consecutive batters, Adolis Garcia’s sixth-inning grand slam was one of three Texas home runs and the Rangers routed the Kansas City Royals 11-2 on Monday night.

Heaney (1-1) began the streak by fanning Matt Duffy and Nicky Lopez to end the first inning, then struck out the side in the second and third innings. After Salvador Perez went down swinging leading off the fourth inning, Matt Duffy ended the streak with a flyout to right field.

Heaney threw 93 pitches and left after five innings, allowing two runs – one earned – on two hits. That after he allowed seven runs and recorded only eight outs last Tuesday in his Texas debut.

“I felt like I owed it to the guys, owed it to the fans, to myself to be better than what I was,” said Heaney, who signed as a free agent in December.

After three of the first four batters reached and resulted in an unearned run, he said, “It all just kind of like started just going. It sort of evolved.”

Heaney matched a record shared by Detroit reliever Tyler Alexander against Cincinnati on Aug. 2, 2020, and Detroit reliever Doug Fister against Kansas City on Sept. 27, 2012.

The major league record for consecutive strikeouts is 10, set by the New York Mets’ Tom Seaver on April 22, 1970, and matched by the Philadelphia Phillies’ Aaron Nola on June 25, 2021, and the Milwaukee Brewers’ Corbin Burnes on Aug. 11, 2021.

“He’s got an interesting delivery,” said first-year Royals manager Matt Quatraro, who returned to action after missing the team’s previous five games with COVID-19. “Low slot, carry guy, so the ball had that rising appearance to it, and it’s tough to lay off. He did a good job, to his credit, pitching at the top of the zone or just above.”

Garcia’s slam capped a seven-run sixth inning and snapped his 0-for-16 slump.

Corey Seager and Jonah Heim also homered off Royals right-hander Zack Greinke (0-3). Greinke gave up four runs, three earned, in five innings.

Hunter Dozier homered for Kansas City in the seventh inning.

Seager had three hits, two off Grienke. Seager is 10 for 24 with four homers off the 2009 AL Cy Young winner.

Major League Baseball has new rules this season that limit the use of position players as pitchers. But Kansas City qualified in the eighth inning, and Quatroro sent right fielder Nate Eaton to the mound for his first pitching appearance since he was VMI’s closer in 2018.

Former New York Yankees star Ron Guidry had nine straight outs that were strikeouts against the Rangers on May 10, 1986. The Rangers’ starter that game was Bobby Witt, father of the Royals’ current shortstop.

Nolan Ryan held Texas’ record of strikeouts against seven straight batters, against California on July 7, 1991. … Bruce Bochy moved into 11th place in career managerial wins with 2,009. … Greinke is 0-11 in his last 18 road starts since beating the Los Angeles Angels for the Houston Astros on Aug. 13, 2021.

Royals: LHP Daniel Lynch (rotator cuff strain) is scheduled to throw a bullpen in Arizona on Tuesday.

Rangers: C Mitch Garver (left knee sprain) was placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Sunday with C Sandy Leon selected from Triple-A Round Rock to replace him.

Rangers RHP Jacob deGrom (1-0, 5.59 ERA) will make a third consecutive home start to begin his Texas career, having taken a perfect game into the fifth inning of his win over Baltimore last Wednesday. Royals RHP Jordan Lyles (0-2, 4.91) went 11-19 as a Ranger 2020-21.

Beebe Named Walter Camp Preseason All-American

The 5th ranked Barton Community College women's track and field team added eight more national qualifiers to its list competing this past weekend in Canyon, Texas, at the Jo Meaker Classic &amp; Multi hosted by West Texas A&amp;M University.

Led by multi-event athlete Ana Couto's Top-10 program impact, the Cougars' national bids were among nineteen personal or season bests and twenty top ten placings in the three-day event.

The meet began on Thursday with the heptathlon, Couto leading four Cougar entries with a 2nd place as each landed in the season's NJCAA current top ten performers of the event.

Couto began her grueling two-day, seven-event trek with a national qualifying 14.16 time for second place in the 100m hurdles, adding a first place in the shot put and a pair of second placings to pile up 5117 total points for the 7th most in program history.

Prentiss posted a pair of personal best efforts towards a 5th place 4356 points, Presulme recorded four personal bests in accumulating 3701 points for 8th place, and Carson chalked up a trio of personal achievements for 3614 total points in placing 10th.

In addition to Couto, the Cougars had six second place finishes at the meet: Oarabile Tshosa's 11.46 100m national qualifying time, Naiya Morgan's personal best 23.57 to better her national qualified time, Brittania Ingram also exceeding her triple jump personal best with a 12.29 national qualifying mark, and Jazmine Williamson's runner-up in the high jump with a 1.67m in coming up short of her already qualified height.

The Cougars also clocked national qualifying relay times, the 4x100m crew of Antiana Walsh, Morgan, Deborah Lowe, and Tshosa clocking a 45.94 third place time to punch their national tandem ticket. Barton's 4x400m tandem was already qualified but on Saturday the lineup of Walsh, Lowe, Danae Nembhard, and Tshosa circled the oval in 3:53.18 for a second place meet finish.

Kelsie Murrell-Ross was the lone individual event winner of the weekend, marking a 15.71m shot put throw with Treneese Hamilton finishing runner-up at 14.86m. Murrell-Ross added a runner-up to the weekend performance in the discus on a season best 45.68m as Hamilton placed fourth with a personal best 40.76m.

Barton's other national qualifiers were Walsh's personal best 11.71 100m time to finish sixth and her 24.46 200m time for an 11th placing and Kay-Lagay Clarke's 4th place 14.25 110m hurdle time.

Additional personal best efforts: Karina Herrera's 1500m 5:35.92 time for 4th place, Clarke's 8th place long jump of 5.83m to better her qualifying mark, Hamilton's 41.04m 11th place hammer throw, and Lillian Thomas' season best 36.3m mark in the discus to place 10th.

Barton stays in-state for its next meet competing April 22nd at the Midwest Classic in Emporia.

Area track and field leaders through April 9

The Barton Community College men's track and field team added seven new national qualifiers to its list with a big weekend in Canyon, Texas, competing in the Jo Meaker Classic &amp; Multi hosted by West Texas A&amp;M University.

The 3rd ranked Cougars had sixteen Top-10 finishes during the meet, posting 11 personal or season bests with two of those landing on the program's storied Top-10 historical lists.

Week after week, the throwing group for both the women's and men's team seemingly make impacts on the program record book, this week it was a pair of freshmen climbing into the shot put chart.

Christopher Young&nbsp;won the event, marking a program 6th best 18.11m to distant&nbsp;Christopher Crawford's 8th best 17.89m throw, with sophomore&nbsp;Brandon Lloyd, who already has the program's 5th best 18.15m mark, finishing 4th at 16.99m. The trio went 7-10-12 in Friday's hammer throw, Young's personal best 51.22 increasing his national qualifying spot, Lloyd marking a personal best 48.75m to reach national standards, and Crawford's personal best 46.54m coming up short of joining the two on the national stage of the event.

Already qualified in the 100m,&nbsp;Almond Small&nbsp;bettered his time with a season best 10.25 in placing 4th, adding a second event for the national meet by clocking a 20.82 in the 200m to place 5th.

Barton's additional national qualifiers were:&nbsp;Theo Leveque's one-man entry in the 3000m steeplechase for his first collegiate 9:41.40 time,&nbsp;Revon Williams' 47.49 and&nbsp;Jaden Howell's personal best 48.09 in placing 5th and 9th respectively in the 400m,&nbsp;Jalen McGee&nbsp;punching two tickets, the first coming in the long jump with a personal best 7.31m in placing 4th to later earn 3rd place in the 110m hurdles in a time of 14.11.

Fabian Campbell&nbsp;helped the Cougars to a pair of runner-up placings, the first in bettering his 800m qualifying time with a personal best 1:50.49 then later anchored the 4x400m tandem of Small, Williams, and&nbsp;Jayden Singleton&nbsp;to a 3:18.39 time.

Other personal best achievements on the weekend were in the 200m with&nbsp;Noah Kincade's 22.00 to place 28th and&nbsp;Jeramiah Martin's 7th place 110m hurdle time of 14.59.

Barton's next event is April 22nd in Emporia for the Midwest Classic hosted by Emporia State University.

The trio went 7-10-12 in Friday's hammer throw, Young's personal best 51.22 increasing his national qualifying spot, Lloyd marking a personal best 48.75m to reach national standards, and Crawford's personal best 46.54m coming up short of joining the two on the national stage of the event.Already qualified in the 100m,&nbsp;Almond Small&nbsp;bettered his time with a season best 10.25 in placing 4th, adding a second event for the national meet by clocking a 20.82 in the 200m to place 5th.Barton's additional national qualifiers were:&nbsp;Theo Leveque's one-man entry in the 3000m steeplechase for his first collegiate 9:41.40 time,&nbsp;Revon Williams' 47.49 and&nbsp;Jaden Howell's personal best 48.09 in placing 5th and 9th respectively in the 400m,&nbsp;Jalen McGee&nbsp;punching two tickets, the first coming in the long jump with a personal best 7.31m in placing 4th to later earn 3rd place in the 110m hurdles in a time of 14.11.Fabian Campbell&nbsp;helped the Cougars to a pair of runner-up placings, the first in bettering his 800m qualifying time with a personal best 1:50.49 then later anchored the 4x400m tandem of Small, Williams, and&nbsp;Jayden Singleton&nbsp;to a 3:18.39 time.Other personal best achievements on the weekend were in the 200m with&nbsp;Noah Kincade's 22.00 to place 28th and&nbsp;Jeramiah Martin's 7th place 110m hurdle time of 14.59.Barton's next event is April 22nd in Emporia for the Midwest Classic hosted by Emporia State University.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Coming off an outstanding junior season in which he picked up nine All-America honors, Kansas State offensive lineman Cooper Beebe is already generating buzz prior to his senior campaign as he was named to the 2023 Walter Camp Preseason FBS All-America Team, the Walter Camp Football Foundation announced on Friday.

Beebe landed on the first team in the Walter Camp preseason listing despite not being named an All-American by the organization after the 2022 season.

A native of Kansas City, Kansas, Beebe has started 35 career games as both an interior lineman and at tackle. This past season while starting all 14 games at left guard, Beebe was named the Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year as he helped lead the Wildcats to 10 victories, including a Big 12 Championship with a 31-28 overtime win over No. 3 TCU. He picked up First Team All-America honors from The Athletic, ESPN, FOX Sports and Sporting News, was a Second Team All-American by the Associated Press, CBS Sports, Pro Football Focus and USA TODAY, and an Honorable Mention All-American by Phil Steele.

Beebe is part of an offensive line unit that returns 100% of its total starts from last season, a year in which they helped lead the way for an offense that rushed for 208.3 yards per game – the third-best mark in school history – to rank 15th in the country, the Wildcats' highest national ranking since 2003. K-State also ranked second in school history in 2022 in total offensive yards (5,863), third in rushing yards per carry (5.12), fourth in total rushing yards (2,916), fifth in total yards per game (418.8), ninth in yards per play (6.12) and 10th in rushing touchdowns (32).

The 2022 Wildcats also ranked highly in sacks allowed, placing third in the Big 12 by allowing 1.50 sacks per game. Beebe has been a main force in the Wildcats allowing fewer than 2.0 sacks per game each of the last four seasons, as K-State is one of only 10 FBS programs to lay that claim and the only one from the Big 12.

Beebe named Walter Camp Preseason All-American

WICHITA, Kan. — The KCAC Baseball and Softball Championships will remain in Great Bend, Kan. until Spring 2025, as the conference and the Great Bend Recreation Commission have extended their partnership, the conference office announced Friday. The 2023, 2024, and 2025 KCAC Baseball and Softball Championships will all take place at the Great Bend Sports Complex.

The 6th ranked Barton Community College men's tennis team concluded a busy week against some of the nation's best on the hard court competing at the Southwest JUCO Tournament held in Plano, Texas.

The Cougars began a tough stretch of competition on Thursday in Arkansas City, taking a 9-0 loss at top ranked Cowley College in conference action.

Making the immediate trip to Texas, the Cougars went 3-5 in the opening rounds of singles and 1-2 in doubles action, coming away on the weekend with a second and third placing after individual play and a third placing in tandems.

Barton's top singles player Gustavo Campos didn't disappoint on the weekend, the nation's 22nd ranked player winning his first match 6-1, 6-0 to easily advance into the semifinals. Taking the first set 6-4, Campos dropped the next 6-4 to rebound and pull-out a 10-8 win in reaching the title match against the nation's 2nd ranked player Diego Dalisay of Tyler. The grueling match was left decided in the tiebreak, Campos dropping the first 6-4 but winning the second 6-3 as Dalisay would prevail in the third 10-7.

Campos ended his weekend with a victory in the second flight of doubles, capturing the 3rd place match with Marno Du Plessis on an 8-3 score. Dropped to the consolation side following a hard fought 8-6 loss, the duo advanced to the placement match with an 8-4 score.

Du Plessis also ended his weekend with a victory, bouncing back from a first round 6-2, 6-3 loss in the fourth flight to advance on a pair of tiebreak 7-5 and 7-4 wins before taking 5th place on 6-2, 6-0 scores.

The Cougars went 1-1 in 3rd place singles matches, Sebastiao Vilas coming up short 10-2 in the second flight tiebreak after trading 3-6, 6-2 scores while Tsholofelo Tsiang won his fourth flight 6-0, 6-3. Vilas began his trek knocking off 50th ranked Andres Ayala of Jacksonville 6-0, 6-1 before losing 6-1, 6-2 to the eventual champion and 10th ranked Tim Riedel of Tyler. Tsiang opened up with a twin 6-0 blanking before trading 4-6, 5-3 sets with Collin's 31st ranked David Palomares in falling 10-3 in the breaker.

In addition to Du Plessis' 5th place, Fernando Andre and Barnabas Kalaba also bounced back from opening round losses to win a pair of matches to also end up 5th. Andre lost 6-3, 6-4 to 27th ranked Joseph Restrepo of Collin in the second flight, won the consolation semifinals on dual 6-1 scores before recovering from a 6-2 first set loss to come out victorious 6-3 and 10-3 for 5th place to join Vilas in posting a pair of Cougar losses on Jacksonville's 50th ranked Ayala.

In the third flight, 41st ranked Kalaba was dealt a 6-3, 6-2 defeat to Tyler's 5th ranked Emilio Vila, bounced back with a 7-5, 6-2 consolation semifinal win before ending the weekend on the top side of 6-4, 6-2 win for the 5th place.

Fifth flight results didn't go the way of the Cougars, Alistair Dick-Vercammen and Joao Freiria dropping a pair of matches each in leaving the weekend unplayed against each other in the 7th place match. Both took first round losses to the eventual championship matchup competitors, Vercammen losing 6-1, 6-0 while Freiria lost 6-0, 6-2 to 11th ranked Mikaeel Woodman of Tyler. Vercammen would then fall 10-0 in the consolation semifinals after trading 6-3, 4-6 scores while Freiria would drop 6-4, 6-1 scores in his semifinals.  The pair teamed up in round-robin doubles play in the third flight, dropping a pair of 8-4 matches and were leading 6-4 before a retirement forced the end of a potential victory.

Campos drops Championship tiebreak leading at Southwest Juco Tournament

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Michael Conforto hit a two-run homer off Ryan Yarbrough to cap a three-run rally in the eighth inning that sent the San Francisco Giants to a 3-1 win over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday.

One day after blowing a 4-0 lead in the eighth and losing their second consecutive game to Kansas City, the Giants turned the tables.

Bryce Johnson started the comeback with a one-out single off Yarbrough (0-1). Thairo Estrada flied out before Wilmer Flores doubled in the tying run, with Johnson racing around the bases to score.

“He fired me up from the on-deck circle,” Conforto said. “I’m down there supposed to tell him which way to slide, so I had a great view of it. It’s just an incredible play. Just an all-around great inning sets it up for me to have that at-bat. I just kept it simple.”

Conforto then drilled a 72 mph curveball over the right-center wall for his third homer since signing with San Francisco as a free agent in January. The outfielder sat out last season while recovering from shoulder surgery.

“I think one of the contributions that nobody sees is the calm presence that (Conforto) is,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “He’s had some struggles early in the season. We were talking about potentially giving him a day off today. But his contributions have been professional and calm and measured. He understands that this is a really long season and you’re going to go through stretches of games where you don’t necessarily get the big hit. A moment like this was inevitable coming for Michael, and glad he had a big one for us today.”

It was Conforto's 28th career homer off a left-hander — he's hit 107 against righties. He began the day with a .225 career batting average vs. lefties.

“I’ve been working really hard on just keeping my shoulder in against lefties,” Conforto said. “I’ve been a little uncomfortable against them and that was just kind of the culmination of some work. Just the reaction from my teammates, the fans, was great.”

John Brebbia (1-0) retired one batter in relief for the win. Tyler Rogers worked the ninth for his first save.

Until the eighth, the Royals appeared well on their way to completing the series sweep.

Kris Bubic was dazzling in his second start of the season for Kansas City, matching his career high of nine strikeouts in six innings. He retired 10 straight after hitting Conforto, the No. 3 batter, with a pitch in the first inning.

Bubic didn’t allow a hit until David Villar’s leadoff single in the fifth. He worked out of a two-on, two-out jam in the same inning and set down his final four hitters.

Kansas City backed him with steady relief until the Giants tied it.

The Royals again were kept mostly quiet on offense but broke through for a run against Giants starter Anthony DeSclafani in the fourth. Vinnie Pasquantino hit a two-out double and scored on Salvador Perez’s single.

A day earlier, Perez hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning to spark Kansas City’s 6-5 victory after being down 4-0.

DeSclafani, unbeaten in his past 11 appearances against American League teams, had seven strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. He allowed three hits and walked none.

The Giants optioned INF Matt Beaty to Triple-A Sacramento and recalled OF Heliot Ramos, who started in left field and batted eighth.

Conforto hits clutch HR in 8th, Giants rally past Royals 3-1

(AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays matched the best start to a major league
season in 20 years, routing the Oakland Athletics 11-0 for a 9-0
record as Drew Rasmussen combined on a one-hitter and Brandon Lowe
hit a grand slam. Tampa Bay has outscored opponents 75-18, scoring
the most runs in the big leagues and allowing the fewest. The 2003
Kansas City Royals had been the previous team to start 9-0. The Rays

Travis Kelce showed why he’s best known for catching passes from

Baltimore Ravens have agreed to a one-year contract with receiver
Odell Beckham Jr. The Ravens announced the move Sunday. The
30-year-old Beckham did not play last season following ACL surgery.

Lamar Jackson, who has asked to be traded. Even with Jackson, the
Ravens’ passing game was limited by a lack of production from their

Dirt-racing star Christopher Bell held on through a restart eight

The 7th ranked Barton Community College women's golf team completed its sweep of the conference meet season Saturday with a big margin victory, winning the KJCCC No. 3 tournament held at Fort Scott's Woodland Hills Golf Course.

Barton opened up a 25-stroke margin after Friday's 324 round to win by 51 strokes after Saturday's final round with six players in the top nine by carding a 339 for an 87-over 663. Dodge City finished in second at 714 with host Fort Scott carding an 851 and Coffeyville accumulating a 953.

"Pin placements were really, really tough today, perhaps too tough for the tournament," said Head Coach Doug Kaiser in reference to the field's final round scores. "There were a lot of three putts and balls rolling off the greens. However I was really proud of our girls and how everyone handled things."

Winning her third straight conference meet, Pornnapa Inmee carded 78 and 83 rounds for a 17-over 161 for a four stroke victory.

Saya Schweitzer finished runner-up for the second straight meet, one behind Inmee with an opening 79 before slipping four strokes back at 21-over 165 following an 86 closing round.

Andrea Peraza and Yu Wei Chiang flipped results in the two days to tie for fourth at 26-over 170, Chiang up three strokes with a first round 82 to card an 88 in the final round while Peraza posted consistent twin 85 scores.

Three Cougars improved in the final round to move up in the standings. Valentina Leyva bettered her 88 with an 85 to place 8th at 29-over 173 with Paulina Villavicencio improving her 90 by three strokes to tie for 9th at 33-over 177. Allyson Kaiser fell a spot to 15th at 55-over 199 with 96 and 103 rounds while Katina Bartel moved up a spot to 17th by shaving six strokes off an opening 107 to finish the tournament at 64-over 208.

The KJCCC championship was the eighth for the program and Coach Kaiser's now 15th year at the helm.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas football closed out its Spring practice schedule on Friday night as the Jayhawks welcomed fans to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium for the Spring Showcase presented by Kansas Lottery.

The showcase featured an evening of activities on the Campanile Hill, which led into action on the field as fans got their first look at the 2023 Kansas Jayhawks.

Friday night’s on-field action consisted of several practice periods, followed by two 25-minute periods of live scrimmage.

Kansas will host seven games at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium during the 2023 season, beginning on Thursday, August 31, against Missouri State. Other home opponents for the Jayhawks include Illinois, BYU, UCF, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, and Kansas State.

Kansas Football Closes Out Spring Ball with Spring Showcase Friday Night

Mixing up the lineup was just what the 9th ranked Barton Community College baseball team needed as the bats exploded while starting hurlers Tegan Cain and Reece Hemmerling supplied the rest allowing just one run in Saturday's doubleheader sweep of Seward County Community College at Brent Gould Field.

The Cougars started the afternoon producing 23 runs off 19 hits of which 11 for extra bases including a pair of three-run home runs by Quinton Robertson and Dryden Howse earning a 23-1 fifth inning run-rule victory before pitching their fourth shutout win of the season in the series finale 6-0.

Clinching their fourth straight conference victory, Barton sits atop the Jayhawk West standings with a mark of 14-2 at the midway point and 35-4 overall while the Saints drop from second to fifth in the league standings now sitting at 11-9 and 21-21 on the season.

Amidst a four-game road-trip the Cougars will head to El Dorado, KS Thursday to open a four-game weekend set against the second place 10-6 and 23-14 Grizzlies of Butler Community College in a 1:00 p.m. twin bill before concluding the series next Saturday at Lawson-Biggs Field.

Several Cougars had big days at the plate in the final two games of the four-game series with the Saints.

Center fielder Riley Silva had a huge day going a combined 6 for 10 with 3 doubles, a triple and seven RBIs, concluding the four-game series hitting 11 of 17 (.647) at the plate legging out four doubles, one triple and driving in eight runs.

Shortstop Ricardo Sanchez was 3 for 10 with a double, triple and five RBIs.

9th ranked Cougars unleash offensive onslaught in doubleheader sweep of Saints

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Salvador Pérez hit a tying, three-run homer in the eighth inning and Nate Eaton scored on a wild pitch in the ninth as the Kansas City Royals rallied past the San Francisco Giants 6-5 on Saturday.

Eaton pinch-ran for Vinnie Pasquantino, who led off the ninth with a double off Giants closer Camilo Doval. Eaton advanced to third on a ground out by Hunter Dozier and sprinted to the plate on a wild pitch by Doval (0-1), barely beating the tag by catcher Blake Sabol with a head-first slide.

“I honestly didn’t even see him dive for me,” Eaton said. “I was just eyes on home plate and doing whatever I could to get there as quick as possible, and trying not to get tagged, I guess.”

With Kansas City trailing 5-1 in the seventh, Franmil Reyes homered off Ross Stripling to cut the lead to 3. Pérez tied the game with a three-run blast off Stripling in the eighth.

“I got it a little bit off the end (of the bat),” Pérez said through a translator. “I had to watch it leave and I wasn’t sure.”

Stripling explained the pitch as a new changeup he's been working on.

“He just kind of muscled it out,” Stripling said. "But I think it’s just too hard. It was 88. That needs to be like 83, 84 and I think he’s in front of it or probably doesn’t have a chance to hit it as hard as he did.”

The Giants loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the inning, but Royals reliever Taylor Clarke (1-0) struck out Thairo Estrada, Brandon Crawford and Sabol to keep the game tied.

Aroldis Chapman pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his first save with the Royals.

Pérez, Royals score 5 unanswered runs to stun Giants 6-5

Great Bend High School Baseball Coach Randy Beck knew the stakes of Friday's doubleheader at Liberal in regards to Western Athletic Conference standings. Hoping for two wins, the Panthers instead dropped game one 7-4, but rebounded to dominate game two 15-1.

Things got off to a rocky start in game one as the Redskins scored four runs in the first two innings. Great Bend scratched across three runs in the top of the fifth, but Liberal answered with three more in the bottom of the frame. The Panthers scored the final run of the game in the sixth.

Great Bend has done well at putting the ball in play but struck out 17 times in the loss. Tyler Stuhlsatz, Carson Umphres, and Edwin Chavez each doubled and combined for seven of the eight Panther hits. Stuhlsatz also singled twice, and Umphres singled and walked.

Herrman picked up the loss on the mound after allowing three earned runs on four hits in 2.1 innings of work. He struck out three and walked four. Chavez was strong over 2.2 innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits while striking out three. Koehn Ribordy struck out the side in his one inning of work.

Game two was decided early as the Panthers put up 10 runs in the first inning. Great Bend scored four more runs in the third inning to set up the run-rule after five.

Stuhlsatz banged out a double and two singles, driving in three and scoring twice. Umphres tripled and singled, and Trenton Kern tripled for his lone hit. Ian Premer doubled and singled, and Hopkins doubled and accounted for four runs.

Umphres and Stuhlsatz combined for a one hitter on the mound. Umphres picked up the win, allowing the one hit and striking out four in 3.2 innings of work. Stuhlsatz pitched the final four outs without allowing a hit.

Great Bend moves to 3-3 on the season heading into Tuesday's games against Hays at the Sports Complex.
