Umphres, Stuhlsatz combine for one-hitter in Liberal

Great Bend High School Baseball Coach Randy Beck knew the stakes of Friday's doubleheader at Liberal in regards to Western Athletic Conference standings. Hoping for two wins, the Panthers instead dropped game one 7-4, but rebounded to dominate game two 15-1.

Things got off to a rocky start in game one as the Redskins scored four runs in the first two innings. Great Bend scratched across three runs in the top of the fifth, but Liberal answered with three more in the bottom of the frame. The Panthers scored the final run of the game in the sixth.

Great Bend has done well at putting the ball in play but struck out 17 times in the loss. Tyler Stuhlsatz, Carson Umphres, and Edwin Chavez each doubled and combined for seven of the eight Panther hits. Stuhlsatz also singled twice, and Umphres singled and walked.

Herrman picked up the loss on the mound after allowing three earned runs on four hits in 2.1 innings of work. He struck out three and walked four. Chavez was strong over 2.2 innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits while striking out three. Koehn Ribordy struck out the side in his one inning of work.

Game two was decided early as the Panthers put up 10 runs in the first inning. Great Bend scored four more runs in the third inning to set up the run-rule after five.

Stuhlsatz banged out a double and two singles, driving in three and scoring twice. Umphres tripled and singled, and Trenton Kern tripled for his lone hit. Ian Premer doubled and singled, and Hopkins doubled and accounted for four runs.

Umphres and Stuhlsatz combined for a one hitter on the mound. Umphres picked up the win, allowing the one hit and striking out four in 3.2 innings of work. Stuhlsatz pitched the final four outs without allowing a hit.

Great Bend moves to 3-3 on the season heading into Tuesday's games against Hays at the Sports Complex.
