SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Vinnie Pasquantino hit his first home run of the season leading off the fourth, Salvador Perez connected in the eighth for his first of 2023 and a key insurance run, and the Kansas City Royals spoiled San Francisco’s home opener by beating the Giants 3-1. Nicky Lopez added an RBI single as the Royals backed right-hander Brad Keller in just the second win so far for Kansas City, which had lost three straight and went 1-6 at home to start the season. Bench coach Paul Hoover is guiding the Royals with manager Matt Quatraro out after testing positive for COVID-19.

DENVER (AP) — Alex Call set the tone for good things to come with his first career leadoff homer. Call and Jeimer Candelario hit back-to-back homers to start the game, CJ Abrams drove in three runs with a pair of triples and the Washington Nationals beat the Colorado Rockies 10-5 on Friday night. It was all part of a 19-hit eruption for the Nationals as they broke a four-game skid.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Brandon Woodruff pitched four-hit ball into the sixth inning, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 for their sixth straight win. Willy Adames hit a solo homer for Milwaukee, and rookie Garrett Mitchell collected two more hits. Christian Yelich had a run-scoring groundout. Woodruff struck out four and walked two in 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander improved to 9-1 in his last 20 starts dating to last season.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Tiger Woods extended his streak of consecutive made cuts at the Masters to a record-tying 23 on Saturday when the second round resumed amid cold wind and rain. He was at 3 over for the championship, and he needed some help to slip through on the number from Justin Thomas. A bogey-bogey finish caused Thomas to miss the cut instead. Others who missed the cut included Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau. Fred Couples, at 63 years old, was at 1 over to become the oldest player to make the cut. Bernhard Langer set that mark during the 2020 tournament.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Brooks Koepka had the easiest time at the Masters on Saturday morning. He didn't have to play in the cold and rain because he was already done with his second round. And he still has the lead. Jon Rahm did remarkably well to complete nine holes and get within two shots. Tiger Woods is fortunate to still be playing. Woods finished with two bogeys and still managed to tie the Masters record with his 23rd consecutive cut. The soggy course and sub-50 temperatures are making Augusta National play longer than ever. The third round is Saturday afternoon.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A person familiar with the deal says the Tennessee Titans agreed Friday to a four-year contract extension with two-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons. The Titans picked up the two-time defensive captain’s fifth-year option for 2023 for $10.76 million last April. The person confirmed the extension on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the Titans had not announced the deal. ESPN.com first reported the deal was worth up to $94 million with $66 million guaranteed. Agent Paul DeRousselle did not return messages from the AP.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Bengals running back Joe Mixon is again facing a misdemeanor charge of aggravated menacing over allegations that he pointed a gun at a woman and threatened her in Cincinnati earlier this year. City police issued a statement Friday announcing that they had refiled the charge “following the discovery of new evidence during the investigative process” but did not provide further details. The statement also noted no investigatory details or evidence will be disclosed outside of official court proceedings “to preserve a fair and impartial judicial process for all parties involved.” A warrant for Mixon was issued in February. But it was dismissed in court the following day.
