Many area athletic events were postponed or canceled Monday as rain moved into the Great Bend area. The Garden City High School softball team could not be denied. The Lady Buffs plated three runs in the first inning of a single varsity game at the Sports Complex, adding three more in the seventh to hand the Lady Panthers a 10-3 loss.

Great Bend was able to hang around early. DeShawnna Bryant and Analiz Rivas singled with two outs in the first inning. Bryant came around to score on a passed ball for a 3-1 score. Paige Thexton singled and scored in the third inning, and Rivas singled in Bryant to keep the game in check at 5-3.

That would be it for the Lady Panther offense. Garden City pulled away with two more runs in the fourth, then the three insurance runs in the seventh.

Thexton, Rivas, Bryant, and Halle Post each had two hits, and Ava Kaiser added the other single.

Braelyn Turner allowed three earned runs on no hits with four walks without recording an out. Alyssa McCauley pitched seven innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits with five walks and a strikeout.

Great Bend falls to 7-7 before a doubleheader in Garden City on Thursday.
