HAYS, Kan. - Fort Hays State Football snapped its four-game skid overall and a six-game home losing skid with a 27-14 win over Central Missouri on Saturday (Oct. 22) The Tigers got off to a slow start in the first half, but were able to take advantage of a couple of mistakes by the Mules to walk away with the win. Both squads moved to 2-6 on the season.

Neither squad was able to find a groove in the first quarter with the first four drives of the game ending in punts. The Tiger defense took a stand late in the quarter with an interception by Ty Cooper, but the ensuing drive ended in yet another punt.

The Mules got on the board first when Cedric Case found Arkell Smith for a 40-yard touchdown pass midway through the second quarter. The Tigers answered with a 22-yard field goal from Emanuel Aguilar on the following drive. FHSU shifted the momentum on UCM's next drive when Sam Brandt collected the second interception of the game for the Tigers with 3:45 left in the half. Fort Hays State took advantage of the opportunity driving 35 yards down the field and capped off with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Ethan Forrester to Manny Ramsey. The Tigers took a 10-7 lead into the half.

Both squads were forced to punt on their opening drives of the second half, but the Tigers extended their lead on the next possession when they drove 51 yards in 10 plays for a touchdown a shovel pass from Jack Dawson to Cale Cormaney. UCM responded with a touchdown of its own on the next drive when Case threw a 4-yard touchdown to Corbin Gant to bring the score to 17-14. From there, the Tigers scored 10 unanswered points in the fourth quarter on a 9-yard touchdown run from Adrian Soto and another Aguilar field goal, this one from 40 yards out.

Dawson finished 18-of-23 for 126 yards and a touchdown, while Forrester went 6-of-7 for 31 yards. Dawson Brown II led the Tigers in receptions with seven for 36 yards, while Leyton Cure had a team-best 37 receiving yards. Adrian Soto led the Tiger rushing attack with 98 yards, followed by Dawson with 89.

Makel Williams had a team-leading 11 tackles, a new season high for the linebacker. Jeremiah Jackson-Trotter recorded a pair of sacks and three tackles for loss.

Cedric Case finished 32-of-47 passing for 333 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions for UCM. Xavier Jackson led the Mules in receiving with 13 catches for 146 yards, followed by Arkell Smith with 11 catches for 160 yards. Jamarion Kolb carried the ball four times for 37 yards, while Jackson carried it nine times for 22 yards. Ayeni Kingsley IV led the Mules with nine total tackles.

The Tigers head back on the road next week to Emporia State on Saturday (Oct. 29). Kickoff will be at 2 p.m.

Class 3A @ Minneapolis Both Russell and Ellsworth lost their quarterfinal matches

Class 2A @ Wakeeney -There will be no return trip to the State Tournament for the Ellinwood Eagles. The No. 1 seed and 4th ranked Eagles beat Plainville and Ellis to reach the championship match where they lost to No. 3 ranked Smith Center 19-25, 25-19, 20-25. Ellinwood finishes the season 34-4.

Class 1A-DI @ Fairfield -Macksville beat Fairfield and Skyline before losing in the championship match to Pretty Prairie 12-25, 19-25 and end the season with a record of 25-10. St. John won their first match against LaCrosse but lost to Pretty Prairie in the semi's 14-25, 12-25. The Lady Tigers season ends at 20-14.

Class 1A-DI @ Quinter -Victoria beat Decatur County in the semi-finals after receiving a first round bye. In the championship, the Lady Knights dropped a 24-26, 25-16, 22-25 match to St. Francis and end the season 21-10.

Class 1A-DII @ Tescott -Chase and Wilson were both eliminated in the first round.

Class 1A-DII @ Cunningham -Stafford lost their first round match to Argonia.

Class 1A-DII @ South Central -Pawnee Heights defeated Otis-Bison 25-22, 25-16 to reach the semi-finals but lost to Bucklin 18-25, 14-25 and end the season 17-19.

Class 1A-DII @ Satanta -Ness City and Kiowa County both reached the semi-finals before losing. Ness City dropped a 14-25, 24-26 match eventual Champion Spearville. Kiowa County lost to South Gray 22-25, 18-25.

Area Sub-State Volleyball round-up

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Max Duggan, Kendre Miller and their TCU teammates certainly don't get fazed by double-digit deficits in the second half. For the second week in a row, they just came back to win and stay undefeated.

Duggan threw for 280 yards with three touchdowns and Miller ran for 153 yards and two scores as eighth-ranked TCU beat No. 17 Kansas State 38-28, overcoming an 18-point deficit on Saturday night to take over sole possession of first place in the Big 12 Conference.

“Everybody’s calm and it’s a good feeling,” Miller said. "When we went down ... I was just like we’re fixin’ to get it going.”

The Frogs, with new coach Sonny Dykes, have won four consecutive games over ranked opponents. Three in a row was already a first in school history, which they accomplished a week earlier at home by overcoming a 17-point deficit to beat then-No. 8 Oklahoma State in double overtime.

Duggan's 55-yard strike to Quentin Johnston late in the third quarter put the Horned Frogs (7-0, 4-0 Big 12) ahead to stay. That was their third consecutive TD drive.

“We are playing with a lot of confidence ... there’s no sense of panic,” Dykes said. "And that gives you a chance when you always believe that you can figure out a way to win. And more often than not, you’re going to.”

Kansas State (5-2, 3-1) jumped ahead 28-10 when Will Howard threw for two touchdowns and ran for another after taking over for banged-up quarterback Adrian Martinez on its second drive. Deuce Vaughn's 47-yard run for his first touchdown in five games capped the fourth consecutive TD drive for the K-State.

“Proud of Will Howard. I thought he played a good football game,” K-State coach Chris Klieman said of the third-year quarterback who hadn't played since Martinez transferred from Nebraska and didn't take any first-team snaps this week in practice.

Howard, who started 10 games the past two seasons, ran for 14 yards on his first play and completed his first seven passes for 156 yards. He finished 13 of 20 for 225 yards, leaving the game briefly after hurting his shoulder on a running play late in the third quarter. Freshman Jake Rubley, the third K-State QB in the game, threw an interception on his first pass that came after TCU had gone ahead to stay.

Miller scored on a 2-yard run on fourth-and-1 on the opening drive of the second half to get TCU within 28-24, after Jared Wiley's 4-yard TD catch that ended a 91-yard drive just before halftime. Miller scored a 9-yard TD in the fourth quarter.

“Having two games that back to back where you kind of come back against really good opponents, against well-coached teams, and just keep keep clawing back and find a way to win ... It shows a lot about this team,” said Duggan, who also had a 65-yard catch-and-run touchdown by Derius Davis on TCU's first drive.

Several Wildcats players that got dinged up in their last game two weeks ago at Iowa State. Martinez was good to start and had a 19-yard keeper on the first play, but was in the locker room for an undisclosed issue before they had the ball again.

“The frustrating part is I don’t know how bad those guys are hurt,” Klieman said.

Kansas State: The Wildcats had won three in a row since a 21-7 home loss Sept. 17 to Tulane, a team that this week got ranked for the first time since 1998. The open date apparently wasn't enough to heal up the lingering issues for Martinez and the other players. Vaughn, who missed the end of the 10-9 win at Iowa State after getting leg-whipped, went to the locker room during the first half at TCU, but returned and had some nifty runs.

TCU: The Frogs had lost three in a row to Kansas State without scoring more than 17 points in any of those games. Duggan, who lost the starting role going into the season, finished 17-of-26 passing and has thrown a Big 12-best 19 touchdowns with only one interception since taking back over when Chandler Morris got hurt in the opener.

RUN TO SCORE: Miller has a rushing touchdown in every game this season, and has run for more than 100 yards in four of the last five. He has run for TDs in eight consecutive games, the second-best streak in school history behind LaDainian Tomlinson's 15 in a row that ended in 2000.

The Frogs could move up a spot since No. 7 Ole Miss and No. 9 UCLA, the teams they were between, suffered their first losses Saturday. Kansas State is sure to drop some, but should still be ranked when the new poll comes out Sunday.

Kansas State is home against No. 11 Oklahoma State (6-1, 3-1) next Saturday in a matchup of second-place teams.

No. 8 TCU rallies again to beat No. 17 K-State for Big 12 lead

A month after its first five set battle, Saturday afternoon presented round two as the Cougars and Trojans needed another tiebreaker with the Barton Community College volleyball team prevailing over Colby Community College 25-22, 25-14, 22-25, 18-25, 15-7.

The victory moved the Cougars into seventh place with three regular season matches remaining, improving to 4-9 in league and 17-11 while Colby remains in sixth slipping to 5-10 and 14-12.

Barton embarks on a two match road swing, Monday at Garden City Community College followed by a Wednesday trip to Hutchinson Community College before winding up the regular season with "Sophomore Night" in welcoming Dodge City Community College to the Barton Gym for a 6:30 p.m. first serve.

Barton Volleyball holds off Colby in fifth set victory

Panther Lady Panthers Volleyball season came to an end Saturday in
Hutchinson.  Great Bend was never able to get untracked against 10th
ranked Goddard Eisenhower, losing 25-17, 25-21, to finish the season
with a record of 19-15.

Hutchinson won the
Sub-State title on their home floor with a 25-14, 25-16, win over
Eisenhower in the championship match.

Lady Panthers season ends in Sub-State semi's

Saturday morning's regional cross country races lived up to the hype. Three of the four races featured current or future record holders. In the end, the Lady Panthers secured another Class 5A regional title to qualify for state, and senior Kaiden Esfeld qualified on the boys' side.

Salina Central sophomore Katelyn Rupe, the top distance runner in the state this year, blistered the field by more than two minutes to set a new course record in 17:24.70. Lady Panther sophomore Marissa Boone finished second in 19:45.38, and junior Addy Nicholson finished third in 19:47.47.

"We knew Katelyn was going to dominant this race, but our goal was to sit behind a Maize South girl," Nicholson said. "We found her, we sat there, and we just passed her. Marissa and I just worked together on our way to the finish line."

Boone and Nicholson have traded places atop the Lady Panther lead all season. Junior Eliana Beckham finished 11th overall Saturday in 20:34.56, and freshman Sienna Smith ran 13th in 21:04.05. Junior Morgan Beckwith picked up the final team points in 21:18.92 for 16th.

"It's really fun," Boone said. "It's also less stressful because you're competing against someone who is also rooting for you, even though you're still racing against each other."

Sophomore Reese King was among the team scorers in the WAC Championships a week earlier. Saturday, she lost a shoe with about 1.5 miles remaining in the race, but still placed 21st in 21:30.99.

"I started really feeling it after a mile running without my shoe," said King. "The last half mile it started hurting really bad because of all the sticks and rocks. It hurt really bad, but I was just like, the faster I get done, the faster I can stop."

Sophomore Kate Welcher ran 38th for the Lady Panthers in 22:47.89.

The Lady Panthers scored 42 points for the team title. Maize South placed second with 55 points, and Hays ran third with 71 points.

Esfeld breaks course record in second-place finish Esfeld ran a 16:09 to set a new Lake Barton record to open the 2022 cross country season. Saturday morning he ran faster than that but still finished second to Maize junior Kaleb Glazier, who won in 15:47.41. Esfeld picked up the silver in 15:54.76.

"Lashley and I had talked about him," Esfeld said. "We knew he was going to be up there with me. I knew it was going to be a race with me and him, who's going to take it at the end. He kind of got me at the end, on the last probably 200 meters or so."

The Panther boys finished fifth as a team with 131 points, missing state qualification by just 25 places. Maize dominated the field with 24 points, followed by Salina Central with 94 points, and Maize South with 106 points.

Freshman Taevin Stroup neared individual qualification with a 20th-place finish in 18:09.36. Junior Thomas Henrikson placed 28th in 18:24.58, junior Bradon Suppes ran 40th in 19:10.90, and junior Braylon Moore scored the final team points in 41st in 19:14.05. Freshman Brantley Vsetecka placed 55th in 20:16.87.

The Class 5A State Cross Country Championships return to Rim Rock Farm outside Lawrence next Saturday. The Lady Panthers run at 11:10 a.m., and Esfeld and the 5A boys close out the season at 12:55 p.m.

Miller qualifies for Ellinwood in 2A race Ellinwood senior Asher Miller finished ninth in his race with a time of 17:59.94 to head back to state. Reigning 2A state champion Kamryn Golub of Stanton County won the race by 25 seconds in 16:42. Two-time reigning 1A champion Meade won the team title with 45 points. Stanton County, winner of two of the last three 2A titles, finished third with 65 points.

Stanton County senior Chesney Peterson entered the day with the course record of 18:44. The University of Tennessee-commit watched as Rupe torched the record to open the day with the win in 17:24. Peterson won her race by nearly two minutes in 17:43. Peterson's last loss came as a freshman when she suffered a medical issue in the state championship race and was defeated by Ellinwood's Erin Hammeke.

Reigning 2A state champion Kamryn Golub of Stanton County won the race by 25 seconds in 16:42. Two-time reigning 1A champion Meade won the team title with 45 points. Stanton County, winner of two of the last three 2A titles, finished third with 65 points.Stanton County senior Chesney Peterson entered the day with the course record of 18:44. The University of Tennessee-commit watched as Rupe torched the record to open the day with the win in 17:24. Peterson won her race by nearly two minutes in 17:43. Peterson's last loss came as a freshman when she suffered a medical issue in the state championship race and was defeated by Ellinwood's Erin Hammeke.

Lady Panthers win Class 5A regional title, Esfeld qualifies for state

WACO, Texas (AP) — True freshman Richard Reese ran for 186 yards and two touchdowns, including a late game-clincher as the Bears held on to beat Kansas 35-23 on Saturday for their first victory in nearly a month.

Baylor (4-3, 2-2 Big 12) jumped out to a 14-0 lead less than five minutes into the game matching former Top 25 teams that had both lost their previous two games, and led 28-3 at halftime.

The Jayhawks (5-3, 2-3) got within 28-23 when quarterback Jason Bean scrambled 4 yards for a touchdown with 6 1/2 minutes left. That ended a 93-yard drive after Baylor was stopped on fourth-and-1, and included completions of 29 and 47 yards by Bean.

On the ensuing Baylor drive, Reese had a 14-yard catch and a 37-yard run before his 2-yard TD run with 2 1/2 minutes left on the last of his 31 carries.

Kansas is still without standout quarterback Jalon Daniels, who missed his second game in a row since injuring his right (throwing) shoulder after being hit late in the first half of a loss to TCU on Oct. 8. Bean was 16 of 27 for 232 yards and a touchdown.

Bears quarterback Blake Shapen left in the third quarter of their loss at West Virginia nine days earlier after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit. He was 17-of-26 passing for 164 yards with a touchdown Saturday. But he had three turnovers, two interceptions and a fumble.

Shapen had only three interceptions in the first six games, but his two picks included one inside the Jayhawks 5 with only 2 seconds left in the first half. He fumbled in the third quarter when being sacked by defensive end Jereme Robinson, who picked up the ball and returned it 49 yards to set up Devin Neal's 2-yard TD run.

The Bears were ranked 17th after a win at Iowa State on Sept. 24, but had since lost 36-25 at home Oklahoma State on Oct. 1, then had an open date before the Thursday night game at West Virginia. Kansas dropped out of the poll from 19th this week after its back-to-back losses to TCU and Oklahoma.

Reese's early 14-yard TD run came two plays after a Kansas fumble caused and recovered by Jackie Marshall. That made it 14-0 less than a minute after Shapen's quick throw to Monaray Baldwin, who caught the ball behind the line and turned that into a 17-yard touchdown on Baylor's first possession.

Quentin Skinner, who had the early Kansas fumble, made a nifty 24-yard TD catch in the fourth quarter.

Kansas: The Jayhawks had scored 73 points in their previous two losses, but never really got much going against Baylor. They had just 76 total yards at halftime, and finished with only 288. They got helped by Shapen's fumble and the quarterback getting stopped on fourth-and-1, after Bears middle linebacker Dillon Doyle ran to convert two earlier fourth-down tries.

Baylor: The Bears have won the last 13 games in the series against Kansas, and is 11-0 overall at home in the series. ... Reese has nine rushing touchdowns, eight of them coming while scoring in each of Baylor’s four home games.

Kansas has its open date before hosting No. 11 Oklahoma State on Nov. 5.

Baylor plays at Texas Tech next Saturday night.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Most teams around the NFL are getting banged up and losing players at about this point in the season.

The Kansas City Chiefs are getting ready to welcome a whole bunch back.

Tops on the list is first-round pick Trent McDuffie, who earned the start at cornerback for Week 1 but who promptly hurt his hamstring in a win in Arizona. McDuffie was placed on injured reserve and returned to practice last week, starting a window in which the Chiefs must either activate him or place him on the season-ending IR list.

He could be activated as soon as Sunday against San Francisco.

McDuffie could be joined on the field by starting linebacker Willie Gay Jr., who has spent the past week shaking off the rust following a four-game suspension for an off-the-field incident that occurred earlier this year.

It all gives Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo his most complete bunch since breaking training camp.

“Both of them looked good to me,” Spagnuolo said Thursday. “I go off what (Chiefs trainer) Rick Burkholder says in Trent's case, and Willie is just a ball of energy. He can be at 100 miles an hour, no matter what. He's rusty — he hasn't been here in a month. We have to shake that off. But we have to get them out there and get rolling.”

The Chiefs (4-2) have made do with fill-ins during a tough early part of the schedule.

At cornerback, where Rashad Fenton is nursing a hamstring injury, the Chiefs have relied on two other rookies in Jaylen Watson and Joshua Williams. And if you appreciate learning the ropes in a trial-by-fire manner, those two have faced the following QBs: Kyler Murray, Justin Herbert, Matt Ryan, Tom Brady, Derek Carr and Josh Allen.

They've certainly taken their lumps. Williams in particular had a tough night against Allen, getting burned for a couple of touchdowns in a 24-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills. But they've also gained valuable experience, and that should prove to be beneficial regardless of whether McDuffie returns this week or following Kansas City's bye.

In fact, given how little McDuffie has played this season, you could say Spagnuolo knows more about his other rookies.

“I do think he's a good football player. I don't think we would have inserted him (as a starter) if he wasn't,” Spagnuolo said. “You never know how a young guy is going to react to injury. He's fully in tune, though. He doesn't have to be at Saturday night meetings, but he wanted to be at every one. He would drive himself over. That's the kind of guys he is.”

The kind of player Gay is: fast and aggressive. And while Darius Harris filled in admirably at linebacker over the past month, the reality is Gay was in the starting lineup over him for a reason. He had 16 tackles in just the first two games.

“He brings a lot of speed,” Spagnuolo said, “but I will say this: I thought Darius did a nice job. Everybody has their strengths and their weaknesses, and Darius brought his assets, how hard he plays and how cerebral he plays. And with Willie, you've seen Willie — he runs around and makes explosive plays.”

Even without McDuffie and Gay, the Chiefs have been a middle-of-the-pack defense, despite facing some of the league's top offenses; holding the Bills to 24 points was quite a feat. But the hope is that getting two of their better players back on the field will allow the Chiefs to become one of the league's best during the second half of the season.

“I think the guys are playing good,” Spagnuolo said, “but I hope we're getting better at the end.”

NOTES: RG Joe Thuney (ankle) and DE Mike Danna (calf) returned after missing Wednesday's practice. ... Special teams coach Dave Toub acknowledged the struggles Kansas City has had in the return game so far this season. “We're behind where we need to be right now,” he said. “I'm not really ever satisfied in the return game, but punt and kick return, we have to be better.” ... Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is likewise unsatisfied with the running game, which produced just 68 yards against Buffalo. “I'm not going to make any excuses,” he said. “Those guys just played better than we did.”

But they've also gained valuable experience, and that should prove to be beneficial regardless of whether McDuffie returns this week or following Kansas City's bye.In fact, given how little McDuffie has played this season, you could say Spagnuolo knows more about his other rookies.“I do think he's a good football player. Chiefs set to welcome back 2 key defensive players vs 49ers

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Kansas State coach Chris Klieman and TCU's Sonny Dykes provide similar descriptions about the focus of their teams, while players from both sides think much the same way.

One of those teams will be alone atop the Big 12 standings after they meet Saturday night.

Cornerback Josh Newton said the undefeated and eighth-ranked Horned Frogs (6-0, 3-0 Big 12 Conference) still haven't played their best game, and he is fully confident all of his teammates agree even after winning three consecutive games against Top 25 opponents for the first time in school history.

“Starting fast, playing four quarters, our type of football," Newton said about what they need to do.

Running back Deuce Vaughn believes Kansas State (5-1, 3-0), coming off its open date and with a three-game winning streak, hasn't yet played a complete game, especially on offense.

“That’s what we’re excited about ... understanding that we haven’t touched the peak of our performance that we can have," Vaughn said.

TCU has won consecutive October games matching undefeated teams, beating Kansas and then overcoming a two-touchdown deficit in the fourth quarter last week to beat No. 11 Oklahoma State in double overtime.

“It’s been good to see us be able to overcome adversity," Dykes said. “The one thing for me that’s been really impressive is just our guys' ability to focus on the task at hand. They’ve been really good about doing that, not getting ahead of themselves, not talking about, you know, all these things they want to accomplish."

The Wildcats rebounded from a 17-10 home loss on Sept. 17 to Tulane, which this week got ranked for the first time since 1998, by beating Texas Tech at home, and winning on the road against Oklahoma and Iowa State, the latter 10-9 before their break.

“Resolve, resiliency, belief. Block out the outside noise and just focus on the next day and focus on the next opportunity,” Klieman said. “You know, it’s not always going to be pretty, but if you can continue to believe in the plan, believe in each other, believe that you’re going to find a way. It’s been really cool to watch the last three weeks us survive and attack the adversity that we faced.”

Quarterback Max Duggan and the Frogs have lost their last three games against K-State and were held to 17 points or fewer each time.

With Duggan back in the starting role after losing that job going into the season, TCU has the Big 12′s top offense with 526.7 total yards, 7.7 yards per play and 45.8 points a game. Duggan is the league’s most efficient passer, with 1,591 yards while completing 69% of his attempts, along with a Big 12-best 16 touchdowns passing and only one interception.

Kansas State defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah had a career-high four sacks against TCU last season. The 6-foot-4, 255-pound junior is tied for the national lead with 1.08 sacks per game (6 1/2 total). The Frogs have allowed only three sacks in Big 12 play.

TCU's overtime touchdowns against Oklahoma State were a 25-yard catch by Quentin Johnston and a game-ending 2-yard run by Kendre Miller.

After only 12 catches for 114 yards the first four games, Johnston has 22 catches for 386 yards in the last two weeks. Dykes said this week that the 6-foot-4 receiver was banged up a bit early in the season.

“We were trying to play him enough to get him experience and try to get him into a routine," Dykes said.

Miller is a bruising back with more than 100 yards in three of the past four games. He has a rushing TD in every game this season, and a seven-game overall streak tied for the second-longest in school history behind LaDainian Tomlinson’s 15 in a row that end in 2000.

“He’s a raging bull when he’s running the ball,” Newton said of Miller.

Even with dynamo running back Vaughn and dual-threat transfer Adrian Martinez, the only QB/RB duo in the country to both have more than 500 yards rushing, the Wildcats are ninth in the Big 12, averaging 28.7 points and 403 total yards a game.

Martinez has 546 yards rushing with nine TDs, while Vaughn has 661 yards and three TDs.

The extra time between games helped Vaughn, who gingerly walked off late in the fourth quarter against Iowa State and didn’t return. Vaughn said he got leg-whipped while blocking.

“That’s football. So just got to get the body back healthy, ready to go for the next one,” he said this week.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — There was a time during Patrick Mahomes' career when opponents dared him to beat them with man coverage, and when the Chiefs quarterback proved he could do it, they began running deep shell coverages to protect against the long ball.

Mahomes solved that riddle last year, too. And now many defenses are going back to man coverage.

Indeed, perhaps no other team in the NFL sees a greater variety of defenses, and vast departures from an opponent's norm, than Kansas City.

And while part of it has to do with Mahomes running the plays, and part of it Andy Reid calling them from the sideline, the biggest factor may be the fact that they've been working so seamlessly for so long.

“The things we've seen is a mix — a huge mix — and that's kind of the flavor of the league right now, I think,” Reid said Wednesday. “And then they'll pick a little more of something percentage-wise to play against you, and man has been what we've seen, and we're lucky we saw it in training camp with our own defense.”

There is an old adage in sports that “the tape never lies," that what is put on game film is the reality of the situation.

The Chiefs are finding that the tape at least misleads.

That's because defenses have learned they have no choice but to do things out of their own comfort zone, in effect throwing Reid and the Chiefs a curveball in their game prep.

So a team that may blitz a certain percentage of the time on third down might drop into deep coverage, or a team that uses certain personnel on first down might do something else.

But the difference is that while teams typically engage in those matches in the week leading up to the game, the Chiefs are forced to maneuver their pieces once the ball is kicked off.“Defenses are definitely throwing us different pitches,” Mahomes said. "They know last year was more shell coverage and zone coverages. They had success with that, we started beating that, and now we're back to man coverage. They're mixing and matching it. They're not going to give us the same coverage every time.“For us,” Mahomes said, “it's about having good-versus-all plays and then getting to the right checks and progressions.”The Chiefs have done that marvelously most of the season. They're fifth in the league in total offense, fourth in passing offense and tops in the league in scoring, even after last week's 24-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills.The solution isn't a simple one. Sometimes the Chiefs go back to plays they ran last year, or more often, ones that they may have installed in training camp with little expectation that they would pull them out during the regular season.It has forced Kansas City to be more nimble on offense than ever before.“Normally it's that whole grouping of plays that you put in during camp. It's like a reservoir you draw from as you go through the year,” Reid said, “and you might have to draw from that earlier than you think.”That's especially true when there's familiarity from a defense. In the case of Buffalo, not only did Bills coach Sean McDermott work for Reid in Philadelphia, the teams have met five times since 2020. And in the case of the San Francisco 49ers, whom the Chiefs play Sunday, defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans played for Reid with the Eagles.“We've seen that the last couple of years now. You have to be a little flexible on your feet there to maneuver around it,” Reid said. “We're lucky we have guys that can retain, we have a quarterback that sees it, and we're able to pull a couple of things here and there if needed, and our coaches have good retention there that's needed.”NOTES: CB Trent McDuffie continued to practice Wednesday in the hopes of playing against San Francisco. He's been out since the opener with a hamstring injury but returned to workouts last week. ... S Bryan Cook returned to practice after clearing the concussion protocol.
