KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Nick Pratto homered and Brad Keller won for the first time in nearly a month as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 9-1 on Wednesday night.

Keller (3-3), who leads the majors with 32 walks allowed, got into immediate trouble walking the first two batters he faced, but escaped first-inning damage with a double play and strikeout.

“We had a chance to put some runs on the board in the first inning and we didn’t,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. “We had them on the ropes there and he was able to get out of it.”

Gavin Sheets walked to lead off the second and scored on Hanser Alberto’s single for Chicago’s lone run.

“The walks in the beginning, he easily could have fought himself hard,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “(He showed) some resolve. He really executed some pitches, especially with the off-speed stuff. The third inning he came out and threw some good fastballs in the zone. That kind of reset the match-up. It wasn’t just one pitch they had to worry about.”

Keller finished five innings, allowing one run on three hits and four walks, striking out four to earn his first win since April 12.

“I think that (third) was by far my best inning,” Keller said. “The offense putting up numbers like they did allowed me to just go out there and throw strikes. That inning gave me confidence to keep going.”

The Royals batted around in the first, collecting six hits, including Pratto’s two-out RBI single, grabbing a 4-0 lead while forcing Lance Lynn (1-5) to toss 37 pitches in the inning.

“Making pitchers work, making them earn their outs, that’s a big thing in this game,” Pratto said. “If you can make the other team work we’re going to get opportunities to do damage.”

Lynn surrendered seven runs on nine hits two walks, fanning four over five innings.

“A lot of mistakes in the middle of the plate,” Lynn said. “I couldn’t get the ball elevated when I needed to and when I tried to go down it was in the middle of the plate, too. They made me pay for it.”

Pratto’s homer, a two-run shot to right, gave Kansas City a 7-1 lead in the fifth.

Michael Massey opened the fourth with his first home run of the season and Edward Olivares opened the seventh with his third homer. Massey and Vinnie Pasquantino each produced three hits.

“The home runs, obviously, were big,” Quatraro said. “It was just nice that it was production up and down. Walks, tough at-bats that we fought through. Really positive night overall for the offense.”

Four Royals relievers fanned seven over four scoreless innings.

Chicago had six hits, all singles. Luis Robert Jr. struck out four times, snapping an eight-game hitting streak.

White Sox OF Billy Hamilton was placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to May 7 with a left hamstring strain.

White Sox RHP Nick Padilla was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte, OF Jake Marisnick’s contract was selected from Charlotte, and RHP Alexander Colomé was designated for assignment.

RHP Mike Clevinger (2-3, 4.84 ERA) will oppose RHP Brady Singer (2-4, 8.82) in Thursday’s series finale.

Pratto, Massey, Olivares homer as Royals blast White Sox 9-1

The end of the regular season was not kind to the Great Bend High School baseball team. After opening the season at 10-4 and climbing to No. 4 in the Class 5A west regional standings, the Panthers dropped five of their final six games. Manhattan, with just one loss on the season, downed Great Bend 6-0 and 12-0 Wednesday at the Sports Complex.

The Panthers managed just three hits in game one against the Indians. Manhattan, meanwhile, scored a run in the third and added runs in each of the final three innings of game one, including a three-run fifth.

Hunter Herrman tamed the Indian bats most of the way, throwing 4.1 innings and allowing four earned runs on five hits. He struck out seven and walked one in the loss. Edwin Chavez pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits with a strikeout.

Koehn Ribordy provided two of the three Panther singles in game one, and Chavez added the other hit. The Panthers struck out seven times.

Game two lasted just five innings as the Indians opened a 3-0 lead after two frames, then scored three runs in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings.

Great Bend again managed just three hits with seven strikeouts. Ribordy, Trenton Kern, and JJ Grove provided the singles. Kern and Bradley Hopkins reached on walks.

Carson Umphres picked up the loss on the mound after allowing four earned runs on three hits in three innings. He struck out four and walked give. Tyler Stuhlsatz allowed four earned runs on six hits with a pair of walks in his two innings.

At 16-1, Manhattan has locked up the No. 1 seed in the 6A west regional. Great Bend is one of three teams in the 5A west regional sitting at 11-9. Based on tie breaks, the Panthers should enter the playoffs as the No. 9 seed against Salina South. Great Bend defeated the Cougars 4-0 last Friday.

Centerfielder Brenton Doyle’s perfect throw from centerfield nailed
Pittsburgh’s Bryan Reynolds at the plate in the sixth to snuff out
a potentially big inning by the Pirates and teammate Jurickson Profar
put the Rockies in front with a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the
seventh as Colorado slipped by Pittsburgh 4-3 on Wednesday. The
Pirates had loaded the bases with no outs against Daniel Bard. Bard
struck out Connor Joe looking before giving way to Brad Hand (2-1).

suspension and a $1 million pay cut after he used a homophobic slur

station Monday, Huggins was asked whether he had a chance of landing
an Xavier player from the transfer portal. Huggins then made

Darivn Ham was encouraged afterward without providing details on what
evaluation — such as concussion testing — the big man went

Joseph Woll stopped 24 shots in his first playoff start, Mitch Marner
and William Nylander had the goals and the Toronto Maple Leafs staved

was the beneficiary of an odd bounce for a power-play score in the

Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars will become the first NFL team to play two international games in the same season when they spend back-to-back weeks in London this year.

The Jaguars will “host” the Atlanta Falcons at Wembley Stadium on Oct. 1 and “visit” the Buffalo Bills at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Oct. 8. The Jaguars were set to play two designated home games in London in 2020 but the pandemic canceled those plans.

“Hosting the Falcons at Wembley Stadium will be awesome only to be followed by playing on the road against the Bills at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium," Lawrence said in a statement. "I’m pumped for the experience and know the support from Duval will be strong at both games.”

The Jaguars have played nine games in London, including a 21-17 loss to the Denver Broncos last October in front of an NFL-record international crowd of 86,215 fans at Wembley Stadium. Under first-year coach Doug Pederson, who guided Philadelphia to a Super Bowl title in 2017, the Jaguars last year became the first team to win a playoff game after having the worst record the previous season.

The NFL also announced dates for three other international games.

The Tennessee Titans will “host” the Baltimore Ravens at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Oct. 15. It’ll be the second trip to London for the Titans.

“It’s exciting to witness and play a role in the NFL’s rise in popularity across the globe," Ravens president Sashi Brown said. "This is an incredible opportunity to play in front of and connect with Ravens fans in the United Kingdom and throughout Europe.”

NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes and the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs will “host” the Miami Dolphins in Germany at Eintracht Frankfurt Stadium on Nov. 5. The New England Patriots will “host” the Indianapolis Colts on Nov. 12, also in Frankfurt.

“We are thrilled to be headed to Frankfurt this fall to play the Dolphins,” Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said. “The Chiefs have a long history of helping to grow the game of football around the world, and we have been eagerly anticipating our chance to play in Germany."

The Patriots are 3-0 in international games while the Chiefs are 2-0.

“Germany has some of the most passionate sports fans in the world and has always been an international leader in enthusiasm for American football and the NFL,” Patriots owner Robert Kraft said. “I’m thrilled to play a home game in this new market and to continue to build upon our team’s long history and engagement with German fans. Our goal is to connect with fans at the local level and I look forward to expanding that fan base and fostering additional relationships and opportunities for partnership in Germany as well as Austria and Switzerland.”

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Seattle Seahawks in Munich in the NFL’s first regular-season game in Germany last season.

There will be no international game in Mexico in 2023 because of renovations taking place at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The five international games in 2022 set record-breaking attendance and viewership. Each game was sold out with a total of 356,116 in attendance.

“We are excited to bring three games to London once again, a city with a huge love for the sport and a passionate fan base across the UK," said Peter O’Reilly, NFL executive vice president, club business, major events and international. "We are also pleased to confirm that the two games in Germany will be played in Frankfurt, a city steeped in NFL heritage. The NFL’s expansion to 17 regular-season games in 2021 gives teams a ninth home game in alternating seasons. Up to four of the teams from the conference whose teams are eligible for that ninth regular-season home game are designated to play a neutral-site international game each year.

The Jaguars host a game at Wembley Stadium as part of their multi-year commitment to playing in Britain.

“The addition of the road contest against Buffalo allows us to maximize the logistical efficiency of our travels to and from the United Kingdom, while maintaining a strong slate of games in our true home at TIAA Bank Field,” Jaguars President Mark Lamping said in a statement.

2023 NJCAA Baseball Plains Regional Tournament Pairings

KANSAS CITY, Mo, (AP) — Andrew Vaughn's two-run homer in the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Chicago White Sox to a 4-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

Lucas Giolito (2-2) allowed two runs on five hits over six innings in a game that started two hours late because of rain.

Kendall Graveman worked the ninth for his first save. He said the delay played into his hands.

“It was a bonus for me pitching at 9 at night because I'm a night owl,” he said. “I was right at home. It was one of those nights when the stuff was a little bit better, velocity-wise.”

Jordan Lyles (0-6) threw a complete game, the first by a Royals pitcher in more than two years, allowing four runs on six hits with no walks. Brad Keller was the last Kansas City starter to go the distance, in his 11-0 shutout of Pittsburgh on Sept. 13, 2020.

“He’s incredible," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said of Lyles. "He always wants the next inning, whether he pitches five, six, seven, eight. He always wants one more.

"His stuff was good. They got to him for a couple homers. But that’s a huge thing for us to refresh the bullpen. And at the same time, he gave us a chance to win the game, too.”

Vinnie Pasquantino homered in the first and drove in both of the Royals' runs.

“I got a little angry giving up that home run in the first inning,” Giolito said. “For me, pitching angry can go one way or the other. Tonight, we were able to channel that into aggression in the strike zone.”

Once the game got started, it moved quickly. The first five innings took just 1:01 to complete. Giolito gave up one run on three hits through five while Lyles gave up a run on two hits. But both pitchers ran into trouble in the sixth.

Lenys Sosa led off the Chicago sixth with a double and with one out, Vaughn hit a sinker from Lyles 422 feet into the bullpen in left.

“I think all of Vaughn's home runs have either tied or put us ahead,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. “He's been Mr. Clutch. Every time he hits one it's a big one.”

Bobby Witt Jr. led off the bottom of the inning with a triple down the right-field line. He was clocked at 11.09 seconds from the plate to third — the second-fastest triple in the majors this season behind Arizona's Corbin Carroll (10.91 seconds) on April 25, also at Kansas City. Witt scored on a bloop hit Pasquantino.

Giolito then walked two of the next three batters, loading the bases with one out. But he got Hunter Dozier to pop out and Freddy Fermin to hit into a fielder's choice.

Seby Zavala had a two-out RBI single in the seventh for Chicago.

Royals LHP Ryan Yarbrough, who was placed on the 15-day injured list Monday with broken bones in his face after taking a 106-mph line drive off the bat of Oakland's Ryan Noda on Sunday, was released from the hospital Monday night. Quatraro said Yarbrough had a follow-up Tuesday and will not need surgery. He'll have another follow-up in a month before he can return to more strenuous activity.

Vaughn's homer lifts White Sox over Royals, 4-2

TMP may have had the superior record going into the regular-season finale against Great Bend Tuesday in Hays. But the Lady Monarchs have not played the likes of Garden City and McPherson this year. The Lady Panthers closed out the regular-season at .500 with a 9-6 win in game one and a 14-4 win in game two.

TMP scored the first two runs in the first inning of Tuesday's doubleheader. Great Bend got RBI singles from Ava Kaiser and Paige Thexton in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead, then saw DeShawnna Bryant homer in the sixth as part of a six-run frame to get the win. The Monarchs had scored three in the fifth to regain a 5-3 lead prior to the big inning.

Bryant, Thexton, Kaiser, Denver Ringo, Kamryn Koelsch, and Halle Post each had two hits in the first game. Bryant and Kaiser each drove in two runs, and Post scored twice.

Freshman Alyssa McCauley threw a complete game for the win. The freshman allowed five earned runs on six hits with a strikeout and five walks.

Game two was not the nail biter as the Lady Panthers opened up a 6-0 lead after three at bats and led 8-2 after four innings. Six more runs in the final two innings secured the double-digit win.

After just one extra-base hit in game one, Great Bend had four doubles and a home run from Thexton in the late game. Thexton also singled and walked, driving in two and scoring once. McCauley doubled twice, and Bryant and Katherine Mazouch each singled and doubled. Mazouch drove in two and scored twice. Rylee Prilling singled twice and scored twice.

Thexton threw the first six innings for the win, allowing three earned runs on eight hits. The junior struck out eight and walked two. Freshman Braelyn Turner pitched the final inning, allowing an unearned run and striking out one with one hit allowed.

Lady Panthers end regular season with pair of wins

win. DeJong put St. Louis in front when he opened the ninth inning
with a drive to left-center off Javier Assad for his third homer this
season. Dylan Carlson then tripled and scored on Andrew Knizner’s
bloop double into shallow right field. Chris Stratton got four outs
for the win, and Giovanny Gallegos worked the ninth for his second
save. The Cardinals had dropped eight in a row and 15 of 18 overall
before their win streak.

PITTSBURGH (AP) —
Jurickson Profar had his first multihomer game in four years, Connor
Seabold got his first major league win and the Colorado Rockies
routed Pittsburgh 10-1 Tuesday night, sending the Pirates to their
eighth loss in nine games. Profar hit a go-ahead solo homer on a
slider from Luis Ortiz (0-1) in the second and followed Ryan
McMahon’s two-run triple with a two-run drive off Duane Underwood
Jr. that capped a five-run seventh and built a nine-run lead. Profar
had his third career multihomer game and first since July 17, 2019,
for Oakland against Seattle.

WORCESTER, Mass.
(AP) — Automatic balls and strikes could soon be coming to the
major leagues. Much like the players themselves, the robo-umps are
working their way up through the minors with the goal being promoted
to the show. The goal is to eliminate the individual and sometimes
inconsistent strike zones that vary from umpire to umpire, and with
it the possibility that a game can turn on a bad ball/strike call.
Disappearing with that are the complaints that an umpire’s strike
zone was too wide or a pitcher was getting squeezed, followed by the
helmet-slamming, dirt-kicking dustups that are practically as old as
the sport itself.

DENVER (AP) —
Nikola Jokic had a triple-double after making up with Suns owner Mat
Ishbia and Michael Porter Jr. sank five 3-pointers to help the Denver
Nuggets beat Phoenix 118-102 on Tuesday night for a 3-2 series lead.
Joker had 29 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists for his 10th career
playoff triple-double, breaking a tie with Wilt Chamberlain for most
by a center in NBA history. Game 6 is Thursday night in Phoenix. The
home team has won every game in the series. If that holds true again,
the decisive winner-take-all clash will come Sunday back in Denver,
where the top-seeded Nuggets own the NBA’s best home record at
39-7, including 5-0 in the playoffs.

BOSTON (AP) — Joel
Embiid scored 33 points and the Philadelphia 76ers easily took a 3-2
lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals, beating the Boston Celtics
115-103. It was the third straight game 30-point game of the series
for Embiid, who also had seven rebounds and four blocks. Philadelphia
will have chance to close out the series and advance to the
conference finals when they host Game 6 on Thursday. Tyrese Maxey
added 30 points and six 3s. James Harden finished with 17 points and
10 assists and eight rebounds. The 76ers led by as many as 21 in the
fourth quarter. Jayson Tatum led Boston with 36 points but was just
11 of 27 from the field. Jaylen Brown finished with 24 points.

SEATTLE (AP) — Joe
Pavelski scored his sixth goal of the series as part of a four-goal
second period for Dallas, and the Stars routed the Seattle Kraken 6-3
on Tuesday night in Game 4 to even the Western Conference semifinal
series. After a pair of tight games in Dallas to open the series,
Games 3 and 4 in Seattle were blowouts. The Kraken rolled to a 7-2
win in Game 3 and the Stars responded with their best performance of
the series in a dominant Game 4 victory. Game 5 is Thursday night in
Dallas. Pavelski scored four goals in the series opener, added a
fifth in Game 2 and gave the Stars a 4-0 lead midway through the
second period of Game 4.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) —
Jordan Martinook had a goal and two assists and the Carolina
Hurricanes scored five times in the second period to beat the New
Jersey Devils 6-1 on Tuesday night for a 3-1 lead in the Eastern
Conference semifinal. Martin Necas scored twice and Brett Pesce,
Jesper Fast and Brent Burns added goals as the Hurricanes routed the
young Devils for the third time in four games. Frederik Andersen made
21 saves in a relatively easy game after giving up an early goal to
Jack Hughes. The Hurricanes have outscored New Jersey 17-3 in their
three wins. The five goals in the second period were the most the
Devils have given up in a period this season.

UNDATED (AP) —
Sports wagering experts say it was a matter of time before college
gambling scandals surfaced. Last week, the Alabama baseball coach was
fired after suspicious wagering activity was detected on a game
involving the Crimson Tide. This week, both Iowa and Iowa State
announced gambling investigations involving some of their athletes.
Keith Whyte is executive director of the National Council on Problem
Gambling. He expects investigations at other schools to follow. East
Carolina assistant professor Michelle L. Malkin says sports betting
has become part of college culture. NCAA rules prohibit athletes,
coaches and staff from betting on most sports.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) —
Georgia’s national championship football team is declining an
invitation to visit the White House. According to a statement
released by the Georgia athletic association, the Bulldogs will not
be able to attend a June 12 event with other college teams at the
White House described by President Joe Biden and first lady Jill
Biden as “College Athlete Day.” Georgia says it received the
invitation on Wednesday. It said the date “is not feasible given

major leagues. Much like the players themselves, the robo-umps are
working their way up through the minors with the goal being promoted

it the possibility that a game can turn on a bad ball/strike call.
Disappearing with that are the complaints that an umpire’s strike

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The rookie class that Chiefs general manager Brett Veach and coach Andy Reid brought to Kansas City last season set the bar mighty high for each group of first-year players that is expected to follow them.

The Chiefs had 10 draft picks and all of them appeared in at least one game. Many of them, such as first-round picks Trent McDuffie and George Karlaftis, became starters or regulars by the midpoint of the season. And others, such as seventh-round pick Isiah Pacheco, played important roles in the Chiefs beating the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.

“The job that (Veach) did with his guys was second to none," Reid acknowledged.

The first shot at following up that performance began in earnest over the weekend, when the Chiefs brought in their latest draft class along with a group of undrafted free agents and select players for a three-day minicamp. Little could be gleaned from a series of workouts in shorts, particularly given the brutally hot conditions not unlike those that will greet the Chiefs at training camp, but it was nonetheless the first step for many of them toward an NFL career.

Felix Anudike-Uzomah, their first-round pick from Kansas State, was somewhat limited in what he could do after having surgery on his thumb before the draft. But even Anudike-Uzomah had a helmet on for the final workout Monday.

Asked what he wanted to see from the newcomers, whether it be effort or ability or something else, Reid replied: “All of the above.”

“Getting into the huddle on the offensive side to these long play calls to the amount of work you're going to end up getting,” Reid continued, “and just the magnitude of it. You're going against real good people, the best player you've played against, and every day you're doing it. You have to up your game a bunch.”

The Chiefs went into last season banking that their rookie class would be able to fill some significant holes.

Karlaftis wound up having six sacks and carving out a regular role. McDuffie was the ring leader for a group of first-year defensive backs that included Jaylen Watson and Joshua Williams, all of whom were active in the Super Bowl. Second-round pick Skyy Moore had a crucial punt return that helped Kansas City set up the go-ahead field goal against the Eagles, and Pacheco took over the lead running back duties from the injured Clyde Edwards-Helaire and never let them go.

The Chiefs cut Frank Clark to save salary cap space, and Carlos Dunlap hit free agency, leaving Anudike-Uzomah to fill a big role in the pass rush. The local defender played down the road at Kansas State, where he was the Big 12 defensive player of the year.

“To start off now, I just want to learn the playbook and I just want to be present and learn from the guys that already won a Super Bowl,” he said. "And if I have the opportunity to play or start, anything like that, I’ll be gladly appreciative. But as of right now, I want to work on learning the playbook and work on getting tips from the older guys.”

Rashee Rice, their second-round pick, will be counted on to catch some of the passes that went to JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman last season. The Chiefs still have Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Kadarius Toney and Moore to go with newcomer Richie James, but there are still plenty of balls available for the rookie wide receiver.

“I know I’m in for a lot, to be honest,” Rice said. "I’m ready for it.”

The rest of the draft class could also seeing playing time early. Third-round pick Wanya Morris could push for playing time at offensive tackle, fourth-rounder Chamarri Conner could get reps in the secondary and on special teams, while linebacker B.J. Thompson, defensive tackle Keondre Coburn and cornerback Nic Jones will have a chance to earn some playing time.

They took their first steps toward it this past weekend.

Now, they have a few weeks of voluntary workouts ahead of them before the Chiefs congregate for a mandatory minicamp the second week of June.

“I just want to show that I can belong,” Jones said. "I feel like this is step one to showing that I belong, and I really just want to take it one moment, one day at a time, so I feel like every day I’m here, that’s another step toward showing I belong.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Wichita State’s Sydney McKinney was the No. 1 overall pick in the Athletes Unlimited softball draft on Monday night.

McKinney, a middle infielder, leads the nation in batting this season with a .527 average through Sunday's games. She also led the nation in batting last season. McKinney heads the 14 players invited to play in Athletes Unlimited’s AUX and Championship seasons this summer.

UCLA’s Megan Faraimo, Kentucky’s Kayla Kowalik and Alabama’s Montana Fouts were the next three picks. Faraimo was the 2022 Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year and led the nation with 28 wins through Sunday’s games. Kowalik, a catcher, is a two-time Southeastern Conference All-Defensive team selection. Fouts, a pitcher, led the nation in strikeouts through Sunday’s action.

Other selections were Florida State’s Kathryn Sandercock, Washington’s Baylee Klingler, Arkansas’ Chenise Delce, Oklahoma State’s Kiley Naomi and Rachel Becker, Oklahoma’s Alex Storako and Haley Lee, Arizona State’s Yannira Acuna, Florida’s Charla Echols and Northwestern’s Jordan Rudd.

Wichita State's McKinney top pick in AU softball draft

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas State and Chris Klieman are finalizing a new contract that would give the football coach a substantial pay raise while keeping him tied to the program for the next eight seasons, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Monday.

The contract will have a total value of $44 million, making Klieman one of the better-paid coaches in the Big 12, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because signatures were still needed on paperwork to make it official. The agreement was first reported by ESPN.

Klieman’s previous contract ended after the 2026 season, so the new deal adds four years to it. His average pay will go from $4 million annually to $5.5 million per year, or slightly more than Texas is paying coach Steve Sarkisian.

The 55-year-old Klieman led the Wildcats to a Big 12 championship last season, beating TCU in the title game before the Horned Frogs went on to play in the College Football Playoff. It was the first conference title for K-State since 2012, when Hall of Fame coach Bill Snyder was in his second tenure in Manhattan, and a big breakthrough for the Wildcats.

Klieman went 8-5 in his first season before slipping to 4-6 during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. The Wildcats went 8-5 again the following year, winning the Texas Bowl, before going 10-4 last season with a Sugar Bowl loss to Alabama.

Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor has been aggressively pushed the school forward in its biggest revenue-producing sports. Along with hiring Klieman, Taylor also hired men's basketball coach Jerome Tang, and negotiations have begun on a new contract for him after leading the Wildcats to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament during his first season.

Kansas State has also invested heavily in the football program itself. It recently opened a new indoor training facility, and new artificial turf is currently being installed at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

The Wildcats lost All-American running back Deuce Vaughn and defensive player of the year Felix Anudike-Uzomah to the NFL from last year's team, but they return all five offensive linemen along with quarterback Will Howard. K-State close to $44 million new deal for Klieman

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Royals left-hander Ryan Yarbrough was placed on the 15-day injured list with what was classified as “head fractures” after taking a 106-mph line drive off the right side of his face Sunday. Royals manager Matt Quatraro said Yarbrough has three non-displaced fractures in different spots around his right eye.

“He's stable, improving,” Quatraro said before Monday's game. “He never lost consciousness. He's very aware of what's going on around him. We don't think at this time will require surgery. He's getting further testing and we'll have a better idea (of his prognosis) in the next 24 hours.”

Quatraro was one of several Royals who stopped by the hospital after Sunday's game against the Athletics.

“If you weren't looking at him, the conversations were totally normal," Quatraro said, "you wouldn't know anything was going on.”

Athletics' first baseman Ryan Noda lined the ball back up the middle in the sixth inning Sunday. It caromed off Yarbrough's head and bounced back to catcher Salvador Perez, who easily threw out Noda at first base. Quatraro said that Noda reached out to Yarbrough via social media.

“Out on the mound at the time, what he said was, ‘I think I’m done. My head is ringing,'” Quatraro said. “That makes perfect sense.

"We're going to have a lot better idea in the next day or so. If you think about broken bones that don't require surgery, they heal within four to six weeks. But that's just for those bones. He has to have activity and those types of things.”

The 2nd ranked Barton Community College women's track and field team were true to form this past weekend in Coffeyville by capturing the program's 32nd Region VI Outdoor Championships.

The Cougars performed at a high level up and down the lineup with eighteen Top-3 placings among their twenty-nine scoring performances, posted twenty personal or seasonal bests, added two national qualifying performances bringing their entry total to thirty-four, and impacted the storied program top ten record book with five performances as another finished 11th on the all-time list.

Accumulating enough points for the title, Barton sat out its 4x400m relay team for the final race of the Championships, finishing with 183.50 points to better Cloud County Community College's 182 points and third place Fort Scott Community College's 96 points.

Cloud County won the KJCCC West title with 256 points as the Cougars placed second at 222 points with Hutchinson Community College in a distant third with 97.50 points.

Barton Track and Field Head Coach David Schenek and Assistant Coaches Victoria Gonzales and Emmanuel DixonBarton also was awarded a pair of coveted coaching awards following the meet, David Schenek garnering the Head Coach of the Year award with Emmanuel Dixon named the Assistant Coach of the Year.

Next up is the season finale May 18-20 as the Cougars head to Hobbs, New Mexico, for the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Championships.

Of the four event titles, two were on the track with a pair occurring in the field events.

On the track, runners from all teams took advantage of wind aided times to record personal bests, program bests, and even national impacting times.

Oarabile Tshosa blazed the 100m straight-away for a Region title 11.26 clocking in posting the program's 5th fastest all-conditions time with Naiya Morgan placing 2nd in the 200m with a program 8th fastest time of 23.36. The duo also posted two additional personal bests, Tshosa placing 3rd in the 200m in an 11th program fastest time of 23.44 with Morgan clocking a personal best 11.40 100m time in placing 3rd. Antiana Walsh also recorded personal bests in the events, placing 8th in the 100m at 11.59 and a 4th place 23.75 time as the Cougars went 2-3-4 in the 200m.

The trio were joined by 100m hurdle runner-up Danae Nembhard for the 4x100m relay, blazing the oval handoffs in a facility record 45.10 seconds to just miss the program top ten by .09 seconds.

Kelsie Murrell-Ross and Treneese Hamilton each won titles in the field events. Murrell-Ross, the nation's top shot put leader and ranking 3rd on the program list, winning the event with a 15.38m throw as Hamilton struck for a personal best 14.89m for runner-up in marking the program's 5th furthest throw.

Hamilton also made a program impact in the javelin, crowned Region champion on a 42.79m stab in the grass to move into 10th all-time in program history.

The Cougars added two new entries for the national meet, Ahniesha Presulme's triple jump runner-up placing of a personal best 11.81m and Brittania Ingram recording a personal best 5.82m in the long jump to finish 3rd behind Jazmine Williamson's runner-up 5.90m splash and ahead of Kay-Lagay Clark's 5.72m mark giving the Cougars three long jump national entries.

In addition to the 200m 2-3-4 Barton finish, the Cougars began the meet with the same placement in the Heptathlon. Kayleigh Prentiss finished runner-up with 4155 points, national indoor champion Ana Couto slipped from 1st to 3rd following not finishing the 800m to accumulate 4022 points, and Presulme posting four personal bests including on the final 800m in moving up to 4th overall at 3738 points.

2nd ranked Barton women capture program's 32nd Region VI Outdoor title

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — MJ Melendez homered and drove in four runs, Nick Pratto had a three-run double during an eight-run sixth inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 12-5 on Monday night.

Melendez hit a 431-foot, two-run shot in the fourth against Dylan Cease and then had a two-run single in the sixth as the Royals turned a 4-4 game into a rout. Kansas City had its highest-scoring game this season and won consecutive home games for the first time since winning four straight at Kauffman Stadium last Sept. 20-23.

“I was saying it early when we weren't scoring runs,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “The process was great the whole time. I'm happy for the guys that they're having that success, but I'm more happy they haven't changed their work or thought process.

"I'm really happy for them, because we've struggled to win games. It takes belief that you can do it.”

Jose Cuas (2-0) relieved Zack Greinke with two out in the sixth and retired the only batter he faced, then watched as Kansas City's offense handed him the victory.

The Royals are averaging nearly 7 1/2 runs per game in May.

“Balls are starting to fall,” Melendez said. “Earlier this season we had some games where we hit the ball really hard, just right at people. You can see how it affects the whole game.”

Cease (2-2) gave up seven runs on nine hits in five-plus innings as his ERA rose from 4.58 to 5.58. The right-hander had a 2.20 ERA in 32 starts last season, when he finished second in AL Cy Young Award voting.

“Just got to keep feeling the process,” Cease said. “The results are disappointing. Honestly, today was better than the last couple of starts. I was throwing in the zone much better. Just working through some things right now but I think it’s close. Just got to keep going.”

Gavin Sheets homered for the White Sox, a 423-foot drive to center off Greinke in the sixth that tied the game at 4-4. Andrew Vaughn had a two-run double for Chicago in the third that made it 3-1.

Jackie Bradley Jr. had a two-run double in the sixth for the Royals and finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

“It feels good, any way you can help the team,” Bradley said. “I've still got a lot to improve on.”
