The 2023 soccer season was a rough one for the Lady Panthers. Great Bend finished the season at 2-16 overall, scoring in just six of those contests. Fifteen of the 20 goals scored last season came in a pair of 7-0 and 8-1 wins against TMP. Former Panther standout and boys' assistant coach Noel Rodriguez was recently named the new Lady Panther head coach for 2024. 

"I'd like to keep growing the sport," Rodriguez said. "It's been growing rapidly throughout the years so I'd like to grow the sport more, maybe invite some new players in, maybe some players who haven't experienced the game before. I definitely want to compete next year, find some success, and give the squad the opportunity to succeed in whatever they'd like to do, whether that's on the soccer pitch or in class."

Rodriguez is a current employee of Great Bend High School. A GBHS graduate in 2012, he captained the Panthers his junior and senior seasons, leading Great Bend to a 15-4 record and fifth-place finish at state as a senior. The 77 goals that year, the 15 wins, and the state finish are all school records. Rodriguez earned an all-state honorable mention for his work.

Rodriguez has grown up playing soccer and coached through the Great Bend Recreation Commission and local club teams. He coached the Great Bend Middle School boys for five years, and was named head coach of the GBMS girls in 2021. He wants to bring fun to the Lady Panther soccer team, but also wants to make an impact in the soccer world.

"I think I'd like to make it a goal to involve the community a little bit more, get some fans in the stands," he said. "Hopefully, we can find a way to do that. But definitely compete and have a fun and successful year."

Great Bend posted winning seasons in three of its first five seasons, but has not had a winning record since posting 12 wins in the 2004 campaign.

Great Bend High School names Rodriguez new girls' head soccer coach

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Senior forward Keyontae Johnson was selected with the No. 50 pick by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2023 NBA Draft presented by State Farm on Thursday night (June 22) at the Barclays Center.

Johnson is the first player to be drafted out of K-State since Wes Iwundu (Orlando Magic) was taken in the 2017 NBA Draft with the 33rd selection. He is the first K-State player to be drafted since the Thunder moved to Oklahoma City in 2008. He is the second Wildcat to be drafted by the franchise and the first since Steve Honeycutt was selected by the Seattle Supersonics in 1969.

Overall, Johnson is the 51st Wildcat selected in the NBA Draft dating back to 1947. 

"It's just a tremendous relief," said Johnson. "I just trusted the process and knew that I would playing in the NBA."

Johnson was joined in the Thunder draft class by Duke's Dereck Lively III and Clemson's Hunter Tyson.

NEW YORK (AP) — Kansas native Gradey Dick brought a bit of home with him to the&nbsp;NBA draft. After all, there's no place like it.

The guard from Wichita, Kansas, who played his lone college season at his home state school, wore a sparkly and bedazzled red coat Thursday night. Dick said it was his nod to Dorothy from the classic movie “Wizard of Oz.”

“I’m from Kansas, she’s from Kansas,” Dick said. "She’s got her slippers, I have my coat.”

Dick&nbsp;showed off his jacket on the red carpet&nbsp;coming into the Barclays Center. The 6-foot-8 sharp-shooter set a freshman record with 83 3-pointers at Kansas, and&nbsp;the Toronto Raptors selected him at No. 13 overall.

Now Dick's jacket matches one of his new team's colors. One of his last workouts was for the Raptors, and he said he was hoping he might go there after having a great time with the team.

“It kind of worked out good with the colors,” Dick said. “I’m beyond blessed. I’m happy.”

Kansas native's dazzling NBA draft coat a nod to home state, Dorothy of Wizard of Oz

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays' biggest loss came long before a rare defeat.

The major league-leading Rays lost ace Shane McClanahan to mid-back tightness in a 6-5 loss to the lowly Kansas City Royals on Thursday night.

Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said there were no plans for additional tests.

“I don't want to speculate, it's still pretty early, but the leading notion is we don't think it's anything severe," McClanahan said, “Just maybe more of a precautionary move just to maybe limit whatever it is."

McClanahan was looking to become the majors' first 12-game winner of the year before leaving with two outs in the fourth. The left-hander, 11-1 this season, gave up two runs, four hits and two walks in a 66-pitch outing.

“It was something he felt before his last start and he kind of managed it really well,” Cash said. “The way the ball was coming out (tonight) I think we was favoring it a little bit more. In those moments we need to err on the side of caution.”

Maikel Garcia drew a walk from Pete Fairbanks (0-2) to start the ninth, then stole second and third. After Fairbanks got a pair of strikeouts, Garcia scored on MJ Melendez’s infield single down the first-base line to put the Royals ahead 6-5. The Royals stole seven bases overall.

Aroldis Chapman (3-2) struck out the side during a perfect eighth, topping out at 102.6 mph. Scott Barlow got three outs for his ninth save.

Kansas City took a 3-2 lead in the seventh on Drew Waters' solo homer and his two-run eighth-inning single off Jason Adam tied it at 5.

“(My) smile comes just from beating the Tampa Bay Rays,” said Waters, who entered hitting .167. “Everyone knows the type team they are, and the quality that they bring every night top to bottom. As a team I thought we played really well, and that's what we're capable of.”

Francisco Mejía hit a homer leading the seventh and Randy Arozarena had a two-run single as Tampa Bay went up 5-3. Arozarena also had an RBI single during a two-run first and has 53 RBIs.

The Rays (52-26) dropped to 32-9 at home. Kansas City has the second-worst record in the majors at 21-54.

Cash announced before the game that shortstop Wander Franco would not play at least Thursday and Friday games due to how he has handled frustrating situations this season.

Former Tampa Bay coach Matt Quatraro faced his old team for the first time as the Royals manager.

Royals LHP Austin Cox entered with one out in the second and didn’t allow a hit to his first 11 batters to extend his run of not giving one up to begin his career to 39. The stretch, ended by Yandy Díaz's single in the fifth, is the longest since 1961, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. He recorded 34 outs, walked four and one batter reached on error.

Family and friends made the trip from Georgia for the game.

Royals: LHP Amir Garrett (left elbow) walked three and struck out one in two-thirds of an ininng in his first game with Triple-A Omaha. ... 2023 Great Bend Rec Shortstop League teams (5th-7th grade girls)

DETROIT (AP) — Zack Short homered and drove in three runs, Javier Báez got his 1,000th career hit and the Detroit Tigers beat the slumping Kansas City Royals 9-4 on Wednesday.

Matthew Boyd (5-5) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings for Detroit. He struck out seven without a walk.

“He had a really good changeup and a pretty good slider today,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “He can fall in love with them a little. You want him to maintain his fastball command at the top of the zone. But he did a very nice job for us.”

Brady Singer (4-7) lost his third straight decision, giving up five runs, seven hits and a walk in seven innings. He entered the game with a 6-0 record in 11 starts against Detroit but allowed five runs in 3 2/3 innings in a no-decision on May 22.

“I thought he threw the ball well, but he couldn't get them to miss his slider,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “He had good movement, but they kept making good contact.”

The Royals took a 2-0 lead in the second. Maikel Garcia and Samad Taylor singled before Freddy Fermin hit a line drive to left-center field. Left fielder Andy Ibañez and center fielder Matt Vierling both went for the ball, which evaded Ibañez's reach then bounced off the wall and past Vierling for a two-run double.

Eric Haase tied it with a two-run double in the bottom of the inning, and Short made it 3-2 with an RBI single.

“We got shut out last night, and then they come out and get the two quick runs on us today,” Hinch said. “To be able to answer back was really nice and then we kept tacking on and built some separation as the game went on.”

Báez put the Tigers ahead 4-2 in the third, driving in Kerry Carpenter with his 1,000th hit.

“I congratulated and reminded him he's still 2,118 behind (teammate Miguel Cabrera), so he better keep it up,” Hinch said.

Short led off the fifth with his fourth homer, giving the Tigers a three-run lead.

Kansas City second baseman Taylor and right fielder Matt Beaty collided going after Spencer Torkelson's shallow fly ball to lead off the eighth. Both players stayed down for several minutes, but Taylor stayed in the game and Beaty walked off under his own power.

“That was scary, because Matt went down really hard and Samad also went down hard,” Quatraro said. “Luckily, it isn't a serious injury. He's got a non-concussive whiplash injury, which is a lot better than it could have been.”

Torkelson ended up on third and scored on Báez's single over a drawn-in infield. The Tigers added three more runs in the inning for a 9-3 lead.

The 1:10 pm start was Detroit's 38th day game of the season, the most in the majors. The Tigers are 14-24 in afternoon games as opposed to 18-17 at night.

Moments after Taylor was shaken up by the collision with Beaty, he was taken out on a hard slide by Jake Marisnick while trying to turn a double play. In the ninth, he was hit on the left hand by a 94.4 mph fastball but stayed in the game after another visit with the trainer. Adding insult to injury, after a review, it was ruled a foul ball.

The Tigers have Thursday off before opening a weekend home series with the Minnesota Twins. LHP Joey Wentz (1-7, 6.82) is scheduled to start the opener.

Kansas City will travel to Florida for a four-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Royals will use RHP Jose Cuas (3-0, 4.15) as an opener on Thursday while Tampa Bay has not announced a pitcher.

College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock will retire
in February 2025 at the end of his contract. The 72-year-old Hancock
announced his plans Wednesday. His departure comes as the playoff
prepares for its expansion to a 12-team format in the 2024 season.
Hancock took over as executive director in 2012 as the CFP’s only
employee at the time. The first four-team playoff took place at the
end of the 2014 season.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) —
An NCAA medical committee is recommending the removal of marijuana
from its banned drug list and suggesting that testing should be
limited to performance-enhancing substances. To pass, the legislation
must be introduced and approved by all three NCAA divisions. A final
decision is expected this fall. The proposal is one of several
recommendations by the NCAA's committee on competitive safeguards and
medical aspects of sports. Other proposals include establishing a
trace-level threshold for a banned hormone and metabolic modulator.

DENVER (AP) — The
NBA-champion Denver Nuggets struck a deal with Indiana to acquire a
first-round round pick in the draft on Thursday night. The teams
agreed to a deal that also gives the Nuggets the 32nd overall pick,
according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The Pacers
will receive the 40th pick in this year’s draft from Denver and a
first-round pick in 2024. The person spoke on condition of anonymity
because the trade has yet to be announced.

Victor Wembanyama’s towering shadow has hung over this NBA draft
for months, blocking much of what is usually part of the process.
There has been no debate about who the San Antonio Spurs should take
with the No. 1 pick on Thursday night. When a player like Wembanyama
comes along — and maybe none ever has — there’s no real reason
to drum up any drama. The Spurs are not going to pass up someone who
is listed at 7-foot-4 but has the skills of a player much smaller.
The 19-year-old from France has been called the best prospect since
LeBron James came out of high school in 2003.

A Senate subcommittee is asking executives from the PGA Tour, Saudi
golf interests and LIV Golf to testify as Congress investigates the
shocking business deal that upended the sport. Sen. Richard

stunning agreement the PGA Tour now has with Saudi Arabia’s
sovereign wealth fund and the European tour. He invited PGA Tour
Commissioner Jay Monahan, Public Investment Fund Governor Yasir
Al-Rumayyan and LIV CEO Greg Norman to testify. The PGA Tour said in
a statement that it looked forward to appearing to answer questions
about the “framework agreement.”

Thursday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

When the 40th class of the NFHS National High School Hall of Fame is inducted July 1 at the NFHS Summer Meeting in Seattle, Washington, it will be yet another opportunity to celebrate the largest organized group of amateur athletes and activities participants in the world, along with the hundreds of thousands of people serving as coaches, officials and administrators.

While some of the other halls of fame that honor college and professional players and coaches may have more notoriety, the individuals chosen for the National High School Hall of Fame may be in an even more exclusive group.

Since its beginning in 1982, only 185 (of the 518 overall in the Hall of Fame) high school athletes have been selected for this coveted honor – from among the millions, actually hundreds of millions, who have played high school sports in the past 40 years.  

Heading the newest group of athletes is Tamika Catchings, one of the top female basketball players at every level of play in our nation’s history. Catchings’ high school career was split between Illinois and Texas, and she won Miss Basketball honors and state championships at both Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois, and Duncanville High School in Texas.

Catchings later won an NCAA championship at the University of Tennessee, four gold medals at the Olympics and a WNBA title with the Indiana Fever. But like many athletes before her, success on the court or field in high school was only a part of the reason she was selected for the National High School Hall of Fame.

More than 20 years ago, Catchings started her Catch the Stars Foundation designed to empower Indianapolis-area youth to reach their dreams.

“The thing I’m most proud of is the impact we’ve made through the Foundation,” Catchings said. “Winning championships and medals is nice, but at the end of the day, my face is who I am. To whom much is given, much is expected. Through the Foundation we’ve been able to bless kids, impact lives and help put thousands of kids on the right path. The impact we’re making is far beyond anything I did on the basketball court.” 

Another athlete in this year’s class has been a trailblazer for girls wrestling her entire life. Clarissa Chun was the first wrestler to win a girls wrestling state title at Roosevelt High School in Honolulu when she claimed the 98-pound title at the 1998 Hawaii High School Athletic Association state championship.

Today, she continues to blaze the trail for female wrestlers as the first women’s wrestling coach at the University of Iowa – the first school from a Power Five conference to sponsor the sport for women.

Carlos Boozer led Juneau-Douglas High School to two Alaska School Activities Association state basketball championships before winning an NCAA title at Duke University and a gold medal at the 2008 Olympics, and playing in the NBA for 14 years. Despite his accomplishments, Boozer has made time to return to Alaska on several occasions to run youth basketball camps and make an impact on the lives of others.

The other athlete in this year’s class – Maranda Brownson of Oregon – was simply amazing during her four years at Yoncalla High School. From 1998 to 2001 at the Oregon School Activities Association Class 2A State Track Meet, Brownson won all 16 events (the maximum number) in which she competed. She still owns state meet records in the triple jump, 100-meter hurdles and long jump more than 20 years later.

A total of 177 coaches are now a part of the National High School Hall of Fame, and the five coaches in this year’s class have a collective 175 years of leading programs for high school athletes and have registered a whopping 81 state championships.

Heading that group is Sister Lynn Winsor of Xavier College Prep in Phoenix, Arizona. In 48 years as the girls golf coach at Xavier, Winsor has led her teams to 37 state titles and is still going strong at the age of 80.

Sue Butz-Stavin completed her 47th year as field hockey coach at Emmaus High School in Pennsylvania last year and is ranked No. 1 nationally with 1,041 victories, which includes 14 state titles.

Barbara Campbell retired two years ago as the winningest girls volleyball coach in Tennessee history after leading Brentwood High School to 1,765 victories and 16 Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association state titles. 

Ted Ginn Sr., football and track coach at Glenville High School in Cleveland, Ohio, is one of the more remarkable coaches in the country. While he has had great success on the field with 240 victories in football and 17 state titles in track and field, his purpose in coaching is truly to change lives.

“My main purpose is not to win games,” Ginn said. “Sport is what we use to teach core values. It’s not magical dust. It’s fundamentals, core values of life . . . love, passion, understanding.”

The other coach in this year’s class is the late Allan Trimble, who won 13 state football titles in only 22 years at Jenks High School in Oklahoma before ALS took his life at the age of 56 in 2019. He spent his final years investing his energy in the Trimble Strong Foundation.

“When you take your last step off the field, you want to know that you’ve done it the right way,” Trimble said. “That you’ve helped others in the program and hopefully had a ripple effect on people in all walks of life.”

In addition to athletes and coaches, administrators and officials play key roles in high school activity programs, and two of the best from the Upper Midwest are a part of the 2023 class.

Dave Carlsrud was an official and administrator in North Dakota for more than 50 years. As chair of the NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee in the early 2000s, Carlsrud was instrumental in the passage of a weight-management rule that helped curb the unhealthy practice of weight-cutting in the sport.

Dave Stead was one of the key leaders in high school sports and activities at the state and national levels during his 30 years as executive director of the Minnesota State High School League. Under Stead’s leadership, the MSHSL became a national leader in starting new activity programs for high school students.

Individuals in the performing arts became eligible for induction in 2003, and Bill Webb of Minnesota is the 16th individual to be included in this area of the Hall of Fame. Webb was one of the most honored band directors in the nation during his 37 years in Minnesota. He retired in 2015 after an outstanding career that included 24 years at Edina High School, where 53 of his 54 bands received superior ratings in Large Band Group contests.

This year’s class of the National High School Hall of Fame will truly be a celebration of why the value of these programs extends far beyond the playing fields and performance halls.

Clarissa Chun was the first wrestler to win a girls wrestling state title at Roosevelt High School in Honolulu when she claimed the 98-pound title at the 1998 Hawaii High School Athletic Association state championship.Today, she continues to blaze the trail for female wrestlers as the first women’s wrestling coach at the University of Iowa – the first school from a Power Five conference to sponsor the sport for women.Carlos Boozer led Juneau-Douglas High School to two Alaska School Activities Association state basketball championships before winning an NCAA title at Duke University and a gold medal at the 2008 Olympics, and playing in the NBA for 14 years. Despite his accomplishments, Boozer has made time to return to Alaska on several occasions to run youth basketball camps and make an impact on the lives of others.The other athlete in this year’s class – Maranda Brownson of Oregon – was simply amazing during her four years at Yoncalla High School. From 1998 to 2001 at the Oregon School Activities Association Class 2A State Track Meet, Brownson won all 16 events (the maximum number) in which she competed. She still owns state meet records in the triple jump, 100-meter hurdles and long jump more than 20 years later.A total of 177 coaches are now a part of the National High School Hall of Fame, and the five coaches in this year’s class have a collective 175 years of leading programs for high school athletes and have registered a whopping 81 state championships.Heading that group is Sister Lynn Winsor of Xavier College Prep in Phoenix, Arizona. In 48 years as the girls golf coach at Xavier, Winsor has led her teams to 37 state titles and is still going strong at the age of 80.Sue Butz-Stavin completed her 47th year as field hockey coach at Emmaus High School in Pennsylvania last year and is ranked No. 1 nationally with 1,041 victories, which includes 14 state titles.Barbara Campbell retired two years ago as the winningest girls volleyball coach in Tennessee history after leading Brentwood High School to 1,765 victories and 16 Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association state titles. Ted Ginn Sr., football and track coach at Glenville High School in Cleveland, Ohio, is one of the more remarkable coaches in the country. While he has had great success on the field with 240 victories in football and 17 state titles in track and field, his purpose in coaching is truly to change lives.“My main purpose is not to win games,” Ginn said. “Sport is what we use to teach core values. It’s not magical dust. It’s fundamentals, core values of life . . . love, passion, understanding.”The other coach in this year’s class is the late Allan Trimble, who won 13 state football titles in only 22 years at Jenks High School in Oklahoma before ALS took his life at the age of 56 in 2019. He spent his final years investing his energy in the Trimble Strong Foundation.“When you take your last step off the field, you want to know that you’ve done it the right way,” Trimble said. “That you’ve helped others in the program and hopefully had a ripple effect on people in all walks of life.”In addition to athletes and coaches, administrators and officials play key roles in high school activity programs, and two of the best from the Upper Midwest are a part of the 2023 class.Dave Carlsrud was an official and administrator in North Dakota for more than 50 years. As chair of the NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee in the early 2000s, Carlsrud was instrumental in the passage of a weight-management rule that helped curb the unhealthy practice of weight-cutting in the sport.Dave Stead was one of the key leaders in high school sports and activities at the state and national levels during his 30 years as executive director of the Minnesota State High School League. Under Stead’s leadership, the MSHSL became a national leader in starting new activity programs for high school students.Individuals in the performing arts became eligible for induction in 2003, and Bill Webb of Minnesota is the 16th individual to be included in this area of the Hall of Fame. Webb was one of the most honored band directors in the nation during his 37 years in Minnesota. He retired in 2015 after an outstanding career that included 24 years at Edina High School, where 53 of his 54 bands received superior ratings in Large Band Group contests.This year’s class of the National High School Hall of Fame will truly be a celebration of why the value of these programs extends far beyond the playing fields and performance halls.

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Forward Zach Clemence is returning to Kansas, KU men’s basketball coach Bill Self announced today. Following the 2022-23 season, Clemence entered the transfer portal, but since decided to return to Kansas.

“I had a conversation with Zach last week, he contacted me, discussing all things going on with him,” Self said. “He asked me if it would be a possibility that he return. We discussed what we both thought would be best for his future in basketball. Zach’s thinking was it would be in his best interest, in a perfect world, to redshirt, help us every day in practice and allow himself an opportunity to grow and get better.”

“We loved Zach when he was here,” Self said. “We understood his decision, but now we understand why he wanted to return. We are very happy about Zach’s decision to come back to our program.”

A native of San Antonio, Clemence (6-foot-10, 230 pounds) played in 44 games in his two seasons at Kansas – 20 in 2022-23 and 24 in KU’s 2022 NCAA National Championship season. In 2021-22 he averaged 4.9 minutes, 2.1 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. He scored a career-high 11 points versus Stony Brook (11/18/21) and pulled down a career-best six rebounds twice, versus Oklahoma State (2/14/22) and Stony Brook (11/18/21).

Last season, Clemence averaged 5.6 minutes, 1.5 points and 1.3 rebounds per contest. He scored a season-high 10 points versus Oklahoma (1/10/23) and pulled down three rebounds in six contests. Clemence was named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team and CSC Academic All-District.

In Class 5A, Randy Beck was headed for a rebuild season at Great Bend High School. Instead, his Panthers posted a 13-9 record before bowing out of the state tournament with a 6-0 loss to the eventual champions from Bishop Carroll.

Larned's Chad Erway led a co-op team featuring LaCrosse players to a 14-7 record with a loss to two-time Class 4A champion McPherson in round one of state. Eric Steiner's Hoisington squad finished the season at 15-7 with a loss to the No. 1 seed and eventual fourth-place finisher in Class 3A. Terry Renken's Little River team had just one loss entering the Class 1A state bracket before a loss to the eventual champion from St. Marys Colgan.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State head coach Jerome Tang continued to build his 2023-24 roster with the signing of 2022 BIG EAST All-Freshman and All-Tournament Team member Arthur Kaluma (Glendale, Ariz./Dream City Christian/Creighton) to a Financial Aid Agreement on Wednesday (June 21).

A 6-foot-7, 225-pound forward, Kaluma arrives at K-State after an impressive 2-year stint (2021-23) at Creighton, where he helped the Bluejays to 47 wins, including 26 in BIG EAST play, a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances (2022, 2023) and the school's first trip to the Elite Eight in 2022-23.

As a one-time transfer, Kaluma is immediately eligible and will have two years remaining starting in 2023-24. He had applied for early entry into the NBA Draft before withdrawing in late May.

Kaluma is the second impactful transfer signed by Tang, joining 2023 Conference USA Player of the Year and NIT Most Outstanding Player Tylor Perry (Fort Coffee, Okla./Spiro/Coffeyville CC/North Texas), who inked with the Wildcats on May 5. Both appear in the top-20 in several transfer rankings, including ESPN and CBS Sports.

The newcomers join 6 returners for the Wildcats, which include a pair of 36-game starters in senior Nae'Qwan Tomlin (10.4 ppg., 5.9 rpg.) and junior Cam Carter (6.5 ppg., 3.0 rpg.) as well as senior David N'Guessan (6.4 ppg., 3.5 rpg.), who saw action in 29 games with 18 starts in 2022-23.

DETROIT (AP) — Daniel Lynch allowed one hit over seven innings for his first major league win in almost 11 months, and the struggling Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 1-0 on Tuesday night.

Kansas City had lost 12 of 13. Matt Beaty, making his first start for the Royals, drove in the only run with a sixth-inning double.

Beaty was drafted by the Royals in 2011, but chose to attend Belmont University. He joined them on a minor league contract this spring, but was traded to the Giants before opening day. He was designated for assignment by San Francisco and signed another minor league deal with the Royals last week before getting called up Sunday.

“This is certainly a full-circle moment for me,” Beaty said. “This is the team that drafted me out of high school and these are the guys I was playing with in spring training. It means a lot to be here and get the opportunity to help them win a game.”

Aroldis Chapman walked the bases loaded in the eighth, but Spencer Torkelson grounded into an inning-ending force at second.

Javier Báez doubled with one out in the ninth for Detroit, but Scott Barlow retired the next two hitters for his eighth save, completing the two-hitter.

The Tigers were shut out for the 10th time this season and the sixth time in their last 20 games.

“We obviously didn't get anything going at all against Lynch,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “He gave the ball to two very good relievers, and we fought for some chances against them, but we never got anything done.”

Lynch (1-3) had gone 0-9 in 15 starts since beating the Chicago White Sox on Aug. 1 last year. He struck out two and walked two. The only hit off him was Andy Ibañez's one-out single in the fourth.

Lynch threw 78 pitches — the second-fewest for a pitcher throwing seven shutout innings this season. Tampa Bay's Drew Rasmussen threw 76 against the Yankees on May 11.

“The defense was great and (Salvador Perez) was calling an outstanding game,” Lynch said. “I was just being aggressive in the zone and it got us some quick outs.”

Tigers starter Michael Lorenzen (2-5) permitted one run on six hits and three walks in six innings. He struck out seven and stranded eight runners.

“I was trying to keep my mind quiet and not do too much,” said Lorenzen, who allowed four infield singles, including three that were misplayed by teammates. “I'm just trying to pick up our guys and get outs.”

The Royals had a chance in the first, but second baseman Zack Short threw out Nick Pratto at the plate when he tried to score from second on an infield single.

Kansas City left six runners on base in the first four innings. In the sixth, Maikel Garcia singled and went to second on a wild pitch before scoring on Beaty's double.

Tigers LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (finger) threw a bullpen and is scheduled to face hitters on Saturday. Two more of Detroit's injured starters, LHP Tarik Skubal (elbow) and RHP Matt Manning (foot), are set to make rehab starts this week for Triple-A Toledo.

With a game-time temperature of 84 degrees and an air quality in the high-moderate range, Lynch and Lorenzen were both working as quickly as possible. The first seven innings were played in just more than 90 minutes and the game ended in 2:11 — 21 minutes before sunset in Detroit.

“That was definitely a hot one, especially since I pitch in (long) sleeves,” Lorenzen said. “It was easy to get into a rhythm, because we were going so fast.”

The teams finish their three-game series Wednesday afternoon, with Detroit LHP Matthew Boyd (4-5, 5.60 ERA) facing RHP Brady Singer (4-6, 6.33).

if they remain in playoff contention this summer. That's what general
manager Perry Minasian strongly indicated before the Angels faced the

won’t trade Ohtani, who is scheduled to enter free agency this
winter. But the GM suggested the Angels intend to do everything
possible to end their eight-year playoff drought, and that includes

(AP) — Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill is under investigation
by Miami-Dade police for assault and battery after he allegedly hit a
man on Sunday. The incident was first reported by WPLG-TV in Miami
after the station received a tip Sunday night. Miami-Dade police
spokesman Angel Rodriguez confirmed Tuesday via email that police are
investigating, The station reported that Hill got into an argument
with an employee of a charter company at Haulover Marina in Miami,
which apparently ended with Hill hitting the man. A Dolphins
spokesman says team officials are aware of the situation and have
spoken to Hill and the NFL.

Victor Wembanyama, the 7-foot-plus French player expected to be taken
by San Antonio with the first pick in the NBA draft this week, threw
out a wild ceremonial first pitch before the New York Yankees played
the Seattle Mariners. He wore a pinstriped jersey with “New York”
across the chest rather than the traditional interlocking “NY,”
and he had Joe DiMaggio’s No. 5 on the back. Standing on the

Lionel Messi is expected to make his Major League Soccer debut with
Inter Miami at a July 21 home game, the team confirmed Tuesday. Owner
Jorge Mas told selected outlets on Monday that his club and Messi
have agreed to terms and are finalizing paperwork and a visa. The
team confirmed certain details Tuesday to The Associated Press,
including that Messi will be signing a contract through the end of
the 2025 season with an option for 2026. Messi’s contract will be
worth $50 million to $60 million per year, the team said Tuesday. He
cannot sign until sometime in July, after his contract with Paris
Saint-Germain expires. The 35-year-old Messi announced on June 7 that
he was joining Miami.

Rory McIlroy is going on nine years without winning a major and the
questions won't stop. For most players, the question is when they'll
finally win their first major. Even worse is getting asked when
they'll get the next one. McIlroy let another good chance slip away
at the U.S. Open when he couldn't make a putt or catch Wyndham Clark.
More disturbing is that in the nine years since his last major,
McIlroy has given himself so few chances. The inquiries used to be
limited to the Masters and getting the last leg of the Grand Slam.

Officials say French investigators have searched the Paris Olympic
organizers’ headquarters as part of corruption investigations into
contracts linked to the Games. This is the third straight time graft
allegations have dogged a Summer Olympics. The Paris organizing
committee said in a statement that a search was underway Tuesday at
their headquarters in the suburb of Saint-Denis. It said it was
cooperating. It would not comment further. An official with the
financial prosecutor’s office said the search was linked to two
preliminary investigations related to the Olympics that had not
previously been made public. The official was not authorized to be
publicly named according to office policy.
