ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves designated infielder Charlie Culberson for assignment hours before his father was set to throw out a ceremonial first pitch on Father’s Day. Culberson, a 34-year-old from Rome, Georgia, was cut before Sunday’s game against Colorado. He was brought up from Triple-A Gwinnett on May 19 but had not appeared in any games since his promotion. After Culberson was let go, the father of Braves outfielder Michael Harris II took care of the first pitch at Truist Park. KANSAS CITY, Mo (AP) — Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout hit back-to-back home runs to help the Los Angeles Angels defeat the Kansas City Royals 5-2 on Sunday in the finale of a three-game series.

It’s the sixth time this season, and 28th overall, that Ohtani and Trout have homered in the same game. The Angels are 6-0 this season and 20-8 overall when both players go deep.

“When I write Mike Trout in the lineup I feel pretty good about it, as any other manager in the league would,” Los Angeles manager Phil Nevin said. “You can’t win games with just two guys, but if there are any guys back-to-back you can do it, it’s those two. They can carry a team for quite a while.”

“They’ve certainly done that to a lot of pitchers over the years,” he said of LA’s dynamic duo.

Ohtani saw the end of a six-game streak in which he recorded an extra-base hit, a walk and a run. The only other players in MLB history to accomplish that were Babe Ruth (seven times) and Barry Bonds (six).

The Royals fell to 3-19-1 in series in 2023. They have not won a series since May 15-17 in San Diego.

Tyler Anderson (4-1) surrendered two runs on six hits in five innings to earn the win. Carlos Estevez notched his 19th save in 19 tries.

“I felt like I threw mostly good pitches,” Anderson said. “Overall, I felt like I gave us a chance.”

Zack Greinke (1-7) allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings.

A day after blowing an 8-2 lead in the seventh inning, the Angels were thankful to walk out with a series victory.

“To come in here off that big series in Texas and losing a tough one last night, then come in here and turn the page was big,” Trout said.

The Royals got on the board in the second. Maikel Garcia legged out a double leading off. Samad Taylor sacrificed him to third and he scored on a single by Freddy Fermin.

The Angels tied it in the fourth but could have had more than one run. Trout led off with a double and scored on a single by Brandon Drury. Hunter Renfroe followed with a single and Los Angeles had runners on first and second with no outs. Greinke struck out Chad Wallach, then got Michael Stefanic to fly to deep right, advancing both runners. Luis Rengifo was hit by a pitch. Andrew Velazquez hit a sharp ground ball that struck Rengifo to end the inning.

The Royals regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Garcia led off with a single and stole second. Taylor lined a single up the middle to score Garcia.

That lead didn’t last long, as Ohtani unloaded a 422-foot, two-run home run in the fifth, followed by Trout’s 408-footer on the next pitch.

“It’s cool walking into the dugout and Shohei handing me the (home run) hat,” Trout said. “What Shohei has been doing the last couple of weeks is unbelievable, but we’ve got guys stepping up and it’s fun to be a part of.”

Jared Walsh led off the ninth with a solo home run.

LAWRENCE, Kan. –Kansas Head Coach Brandon Schneider has announced two new assistant coaches for the women’s basketball program with the promotion of Brock McGinnis and hiring of Marqu’es Webb.

McGinnis and Webb join Morgan Paige and Karyla Middlebrook as assistants under Schneider, who led Kansas to a 25-11 record and the 2023 WNIT Championship last season. The Jayhawks are coming off back-to-back 20-win seasons and KU has reached the postseason in each of the past two seasons. Kansas returns four starters from 2022-23, including All-Big 12 First Team selections Taiyanna Jackson and Zakiyah Franklin. "Brock has been a tremendous asset to our program and has contributed significantly to the progress we've made in his time here," said Schneider. "He has a terrific basketball mind and is a proven relationship builder. Brock will work with our post players and will continue to be heavily involved in game planning and scouting of opponents. We are excited to have him on the court as an assistant coach and on the road as a recruiter and talent evaluator." &nbsp;

McGinnis has been on staff at KU for four seasons, serving as the Director of Player Development since 2019. He has assisted as Kansas reached the postseason in each of the past two seasons, including winning the 2023 WNIT Championship. The Jayhawks finished 25-11 in 2022-23, marking the sixth time in program history that KU won at least 25 games in a season, and the first time since 1996-97.

Kansas was led by one of the most improved players in the country last season as Taiyanna Jackson became the first Jayhawk in more than 40 years to average a double-double. She was named a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 First Team and the Big 12 All-Defensive Team after breaking the single-season school record in blocked shots for the second-straight season.

The Jayhawks have now won at least 20 games in consecutive seasons after going 21-10 in 2021-22, reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013. The 21 victories marked a win increase of 14 from 2020-21, which is the largest single-season win improvement in program history.

Webb worked primarily with the Bears’ post players and coached nine players who earned All-SoCon honors, including two Defensive Players of the Year.

Prior to Mercer, Webb spent two seasons on staff at her alma mater Vanderbilt, working as an assistant coach during the 2020-21 season after serving as the director of player development the year prior. She returned to Vandy after playing two years professionally overseas in the Czech Republic for BK Zabiny Brno.

As a student-athlete Webb played in 119 games for Vanderbilt from 2013-17, making 80 starts. She scored 875 points and pulled down 703 rebounds in her career and was a member of an NCAA Tournament team as a freshman. Webb was elected to the SEC’s Women’s Basketball Leadership Council chair and was named the team’s Passion Player of the Year as a senior.

KU: Schneider announces coaching staff additions

MORGANTOWN (AP) —West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins has resigned a day after his arrest on suspicion of drunken driving in the latest incident in a Hall of Fame career that imploded quickly.

The university announced the resignation Saturday night. It came a month after the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/huggins-homophobic-slur-west-virginia-xavier-77ce70b41112a0062421ad9405558473">university suspended him for three games</a>&nbsp;for using an anti-gay slur while also denigrating Catholics during a radio interview.

The 69-year-old Huggins leaves as the third-winningest coach all-time in Division I with 935 career victories, behind only Mike Krzyzewski of Duke (1,202) and Jim Boeheim of Syracuse (1,015), both of whom are retired. Unlike the others, Huggins had no national titles, taking Cincinnati to the Final Four in 1992 and West Virginia in 2010.

Huggins had 16-year stints each with the Bearcats and Mountaineers. Both ended in the aftermath of arrests for drinking and driving.

Huggins was charged with driving under the influence on Friday night after his SUV had stopped in the middle of traffic in Pittsburgh with a shredded tire and the driver’s side door was open at about 8:30 p.m. According to a criminal complaint, a breath test determined Huggins’ blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit.

Huggins was charged with driving under the influence, released from custody and will appear at a later date for a preliminary hearing, according to a police report.

In a statement to the West Virginia community on Saturday night, Huggins said: “Today, I have submitted a letter to President Gordon Gee and Vice President and Director of Athletics Wren Baker informing them of my resignation and intention to retire as head men’s basketball coach at West Virginia University effective immediately.”

In a separate statement Saturday night, West Virginia’s athletic department said it accepted the resignation “in light of recent events.

“We support his decision so that he can focus on his health and family. On behalf of West Virginia University, we share our appreciation for his service to our University, our community and our state."

No replacement was immediately named for Huggins. The athletic department statement said that “in the days ahead, we will focus on supporting the student-athletes in our men’s basketball program and solidifying leadership for our program.”

Huggins said his recent actions do not represent the university's values or the leadership expected in his role as coach.

“While I have always tried to represent our University with honor, I have let all of you — and myself — down,” he said. “I am solely responsible for my conduct and sincerely apologize to the University community — particularly to the student-athletes, coaches and staff in our program. I must do better, and I plan to spend the next few months focused on my health and my family so that I can be the person they deserve.”

Huggins added that it was “the honor of my professional career” to lead the team at his alma mater. Born in Morgantown, he said it “will always be my home, and I will always be a Mountaineer. Thank you to everyone who has supported our program over the years. It has meant more to me and my family than you could ever know.”

Friday night, officers directed Huggins to move off the road so they could help with the tire, then activated their lights when they observed Huggins having trouble maneuvering the SUV to allow vehicles to pass. Upon questioning, officers suspected he was intoxicated and asked him to exit the vehicle. The report said he failed standard field sobriety tests, was taken into custody without incident and transported for further testing.

It was Huggins’ second such arrest. The other occurred in 2004, when he was the head coach at Cincinnati.

In June 2004, Huggins pleaded no contest to driving under the influence in a suburb of Cincinnati and was ordered to attend a three-day intervention program. The University of Cincinnati suspended him indefinitely with pay and told Huggins to rehabilitate himself.

Huggins was allowed to return to work two months later, saying that “I made a terrible mistake, and what bothers me most is I hurt other people. All I can do is work like crazy to be a better person, a better coach, be better at everything I do and make those people proud of me.”

By 2005, Huggins' Cincinnati career was over; he was fired amid a power struggle with the school’s president as well as the aftermath of the 2004 arrest.

After spending one season at Kansas State, Huggins took his dream job at West Virginia, his alma mater, in 2007.

Last month, Huggins agreed to a three-game suspension, a $1 million salary reduction and sensitivity training for&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/huggins-homophobic-slur-west-virginia-665dd3d31760b1c6f66d7d706e825727">using the slur</a>&nbsp;during an interview with Cincinnati radio station WLW. Huggins was asked about the transfer portal and whether he had a chance of landing a player at West Virginia from Xavier, a Jesuit school.

“Catholics don’t do that,” Huggins said. “I tell you what, any school that can throw rubber penises on the floor and then say they didn’t do it, by God they can get away with anything.

“It was the Crosstown Shootout. What it was, was all those (expletive), those Catholic (expletive), I think.”

In a joint statement later that week, Gee and Baker said the university “made it explicitly clear to Coach Huggins that any incidents of similar derogatory and offensive language will result in immediate termination.”

Huggins’ salary of $4.15 million had been reduced by $1 million after the slur. That reduction was to be used to directly support WVU’s LGBTQ+ Center, as well as a mental health center at the university and other groups that support marginalized communities. At the time, he was suspended for the first three games of the 2023-24 season. In addition, his contract was amended from a multiyear agreement to a year-by-year agreement that began on May 10.

Huggins entered the Basketball Hall of Fame last September. In 41 seasons, his teams have gone to 25 NCAA Tournaments, finished ranked in the top 10 of The Associated Press poll seven times and finished under .500 five times. The Mountaineers have 11 NCAA Tournament appearances under Huggins.

Huggins had assembled a solid group from the transfer portal for next season, including Syracuse center Jesse Edwards, Arizona guard Kerr Kriisa, Manhattan guards Jose Perez and Omar Silverio, and Montana State guard RaeQuan Battle.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brandon Drury drove in two runs, Patrick Sandoval threw seven innings and the Los Angeles Angels handed Kansas City its 10th straight loss, beating the Royals 3-0 on Friday night.

Kansas City, a big league-worst 18-51, is on its longest losing streak since dropping 11 games in a row from May 2-13, 2021. The Royals were held to four hits or fewer for the 15th time and shut out for the ninth.

Los Angeles has won 10 of 12. The Angels took two of three at home from Seattle before winning three of four at AL West-leading Texas.

“It probably wasn’t our best game offensively and we made some mistakes on the bases, but overall I thought Sandy was great,” Angels manager Phil Nevin said. “Where we came from the last two series, you could have a letdown game. I thought we answered well.”

Sandoval (4-6) didn’t retire the Royals in order until he struck out the side in the seventh. He gave four hits, four walks and hit a batter, and had six strikeouts.

“I could do without the four walks,” Sandoval said. “I was satisfied to go seven, give our bullpen a rest and give us a chance to win.

“I had to find a way to get outs and get our team back in the dugout.”

Sam Bachman retired six straight batters his first professional save.

Royals starter Brady Singer (4-6) allowed two runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.

“He settled in really well,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said about Singer. “A little unfortunate there in the sixth, kind of broke his rhythm a bit, but overall he threw the ball well. Five and a third, two runs against that lineup is pretty solid.”

Shohei Ohtani laced a double down the left-field line in the first and went to third on a wild pitch. After Mike Trout walked, Drury singled to score Ohtani and send Trout to third. The Royals avoided further trouble when Singer struck out Matt Thaiss, and Drury was caught stealing.

Drury extended the lead in the sixth with an RBI double. Trout led off with a single. Drury followed with a line drive down the left-field line. Hunter Renfroe singled, ending Singer’s night.

The Angels added a run in the seventh when Jose Cuas hit his first batter and walked Thaiss with the bases loaded.

TRAINER’S ROOM C Salvador Perez was not in the lineup after being hit by a pitch in the left hand Wednesday. X-Rays were negative and manager Matt Quatraro said Perez is likely to be back soon.

10 straight: Banged up Royals shut out by Los Angeles

The defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs will return to St. Joseph for a 13th year for Chiefs Training Camp presented by Mosaic Life Care on the Missouri Western Campus and dates have been announced for practices. &nbsp;

Practices will begin on Sunday July 23rd and will run through Thursday, August 17th.&nbsp; All training camp practices will be free to attend, except for a select few where there will be a charge to attend. Missouri Western will charge a $5 parking fee per vehicle at practice&nbsp;

Missouri Western will charge a $5 admission fee on Sunday July 23rd, Saturday July 29th which is the Chiefs Champions Tour, and on Saturday, August 5th which is Family Fun Day. The Chiefs will also host two exclusive days for Season Ticket Holders that will not be open to the public on Monday July 24th and Wednesday August 9th. &nbsp;

Due to the expected influx of people coming to training camp, once again tickets will need to be reserved ahead of time and attendance will be limited to provide the best experience.&nbsp; Ticket reservations will open on Wednesday June 21st at 10am for Season Ticket holders and on Thursday June 22nd for the public. &nbsp;

Fans are limited to reserving a maximum of six tickets per practice and can reserve up to a maximum of three separate practices.  </figure>By MATT PIKESt. Joseph PostThe defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs will return to St. Joseph for a 13th year for Chiefs Training Camp presented by Mosaic Life Care on the Missouri Western Campus and dates have been announced for practices. &nbsp;Practices will begin on Sunday July 23rd and will run through Thursday, August 17th.&nbsp; All training camp practices will be free to attend, except for a select few where there will be a charge to attend. Missouri Western will charge a $5 parking fee per vehicle at practice&nbsp;Missouri Western will charge a $5 admission fee on Sunday July 23rd, Saturday July 29th which is the Chiefs Champions Tour, and on Saturday, August 5th which is Family Fun Day. The Chiefs will also host two exclusive days for Season Ticket Holders that will not be open to the public on Monday July 24th and Wednesday August 9th. &nbsp;Due to the expected influx of people coming to training camp, once again tickets will need to be reserved ahead of time and attendance will be limited to provide the best experience.&nbsp; Ticket reservations will open on Wednesday June 21st at 10am for Season Ticket holders and on Thursday June 22nd for the public. &nbsp;Fans are limited to reserving a maximum of six tickets per practice and can reserve up to a maximum of three separate practices. Those select paid payment practices will require a payment ahead of time to reserve tickets. Paid practice dates and Season Ticket Member dates do not count towards the maximum ticket reservation allotment of three practices.&nbsp;New to this year, Chiefs Tailgate Suites will be available for purchase in the North Endzone for groups of 10 or more. MIAMI (AP) — The NBA and the Miami Heat are investigating an allegation that former UFC champion Conor McGregor sexually assaulted a woman inside an arena bathroom after Game 4 of the NBA Finals. The woman’s attorney, Ariel Mitchell, said her client has provided Miami police with the clothing she was wearing that night and that a report was filed. Miami police did not respond when asked Thursday evening whether they were investigating. McGregor’s attorney said the fighter denied any wrongdoing. “Mr. McGregor will not be intimidated,” said the attorney, Barbara Llanes. In letters sent to the NBA, the Heat and McGregor’s representatives, Mitchell detailed her client’s allegations and said the client would discuss “reasonable settlement offers” before June 12 or else proceed with litigation.

GENEVA (AP) — Swiss cyclist Gino Mäder died Friday, one day after crashing and falling down a ravine during a descent at the Tour de Suisse, the Bahrain-Victorious team said. The 26-year-old Mäder&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/cycling-tour-suisse-mader-sheffield-6b196a2b977774d14f8694c68ad66093">crashed on a fast downhill road</a>&nbsp;approaching the end of the mountainous fifth stage into La Punt. Medical staff who reached Mäder found him motionless in water. They performed CPR before he was airlifted to the hospital.

The search for a new home for the Kansas City Royals is nearing its conclusion. Various Kansas City media outlets reported Wednesday that the search has been narrowed to two locations: an East Village site just east of the Kansas City Police Department headquarters, and a North Kansas City site near 18th Avenue and Fayette.

North Kansas City Mayor Bryant DeLong has been working with Clay County officials in Missouri to bring the stadium there, though that decision will ultimately decide if everyone in the county can vote for a sales tax that would help fund a new stadium. Officials in Jackson County would like to see a stadium remain in that county and face a similar voting issue. Jackson County owns the current Kauffman Stadium that was built in 1973.

Royals ownership down to final two locations for new stadium

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones, who is entering the final year of his contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, was absent from the start of the Super Bowl champions' mandatory three-day minicamp Tuesday.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid is not expected to speak until Thursday, and the Chiefs did not make anyone else available to discuss Jones' absence. If it is unexcused, Jones could be fined as much as $98,753 under terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

The 28-year-old Jones is coming off perhaps the best season of his career, matching a career high with 15 1/2 sacks before getting two more in the postseason. His disruptive presence in the middle of the defensive line also was a big reason why the Chiefs were able to slow down the Philadelphia Eagles in the second half as they rallied to win the Lombardi Trophy.

Jones carries a salary cap hit of $28 million this season, the last of an $80 million, four-year deal. The contract he signed in 2020 helped to set the market for defensive tackles, but the $20 million average currently ranks just eighth at his position.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach acknowledged after the NFL draft that he planned to discuss an extension with Jones' representatives. Veach also indicated that he wanted to get one done before the Chiefs report to training camp next month.

“We’ll get to work and see what we can do,” he said.

Jones was among six players that were absent for the first of three mandatory practices. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Whether they’re being serious or entirely tongue-in-cheek, the Cincinnati Reds have begun calling themselves “America’s Team.”

A few more series like they had in Kansas City and that moniker might expand beyond the clubhouse.

The Reds pounded out four homers Wednesday night, including three during a five-run fifth inning, and held on for a 7-4 victory over the Royals that not only completed the three-game sweep but extended their winning streak to five straight.

“It’s a long season. It doesn’t matter who we’re playing, we just got to play our brand of baseball,” said Matt McLain, whose three-run shot highlighted the Reds’ big inning. “You play it hard no matter what happens. That’s what we’re going to do.”

Spencer Steer homered in the second before Stuart Fairchild and Jonathan India joined McLain in going deep in the fifth, breaking open a 1-all game and sending the Reds to their eighth win in their last 10 games.

Ben Lively (4-4) ended a rough stretch for Cincinnati starters, allowing 10 hits but just two runs over 5 2/3 innings. Alexis Diaz entered with two on and one out in the ninth and struck out Freddy Fermin and retired Dairon Blanco for his 17th save.

“We have to do whatever it takes to get a win,” Reds manager David Bell said. “Home runs played a big part tonight.”

The Royals’ Daniel Lynch (0-3) gave up all four Reds homers, the most he’s allowed in an outing in his career. That led to all seven of their runs on seven hits and a pair of walks, extending Lynch’s winless streak stretched to 15 starts.

The Royals, who at 18-50 have the worst record in the majors, have lost a season-high nine straight games.

“We had chances to drive guys in,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “We have to keep putting quality at-bats together, and when you have a chance to drive in runs, you can’t change your approach.”

Steer set the tone for the Reds in the second when he deposited Lynch’s 1-1 pitch in the left-field seats, though the Royals at least answered that homer. Bobby Witt Jr. drove in a run on his 23rd birthday with one of his three hits on the night.

It turned out to be a costly inning for the Royals, though. Salvador Perez was hit on the left hand by a pitch from Lively and had to be replaced by Maikel Garcia. Perez was diagnosed with a bruise and is day-to-day.

“We got pretty lucky,” said Quatraro, adding that X-rays on Perez came back negative. “He said right away, ‘I’ve got to come out.’ It got him right on, I don’t know what bone, but it squared him up good.”

The Reds pulled ahead in the fourth when a video review turned a leadoff groundout by McLain into a hit. India followed with a flyball to left field that Edward Oliveras nearly caught but instead fell for a go-ahead RBI double.

But it was the deep ball that ruined the night for Kansas City.

Fairchild began the Reds’ big fifth inning with his line drive into the left-field bullpen, and McLain made it 6-1 with his soaring three-run shot later in the inning. India capped the five-run frame and gave Cincinnati back-to-back homers for the second time this season when he sent his eighth of the year over the left-field wall.

The Royals got runs back in the sixth, seventh and ninth before Diaz left the bases loaded by closing out the game.

“We had the chant going on, ‘America’s Team!’ We’re going with that consensus,” Lively said. “Just everyone kept scrambling, man, and the positivity in the clubhouse is so cool.”

PASQUANTINO OUT Royals first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino will have season-ending surgery on a torn labrum in his right shoulder. He felt discomfort during a game against Baltimore on June 9, and an MRI exam Monday revealed the damage. One of the club’s best young hitters, Pasquantino was batting .247 with nine homers and 26 RBIs through 61 games.

The KSHSAA maintains a very strong relationship with Visit Manhattan and Kansas State University however this year’s KSHSAA State Basketball Championships conflict with the final week of the Big 12 Conference regular season. Kansas State expressed desire to host a home game for one or both of their basketball teams should that opportunity arise. Accordingly, it was necessary for the KSHSAA to consider alternative locations to conduct the seven basketball tournaments.

“After conversations with many around the state, the Colby Event Center is the best facility to host a state basketball tournament in 2024 as we work through the 2024 season with Bramlage Coliseum not being an option,” said Kyle Doperalski, KSHSAA Assistant Executive Director. “The City of Colby along with its events center staff will do a marvelous job hosting a state tournament for our athletes, coaches and fans to enjoy. The facility has been in operation for two years and boasts a lot of features and amenities our teams and fans will appreciate and will make a perfect fit for Class 1A-DI’s state tournament. Dodge City will continue it’s tradition of top notch event management providing Class 2A a championship level experience in United Wireless Arena.”

The Colby Event Center in Colby, KS was opened in 2021 and plays host to Colby Community College and the Orange and Black basketball tournament along with many other events year-round. This will be the first KSHSAA State Basketball Championship held in Colby.

United Wireless Arena has hosted many state events since 2015 including hosting 1A DI State Basketball Championship last year as well as the 2A and 1A DI State Volleyball Championships the last four years.

TOPEKA, Kan. –&nbsp;The 2024 Class 1A DI State Basketball Championships are headed to the Colby Event Center&nbsp;March&nbsp; 6-9, 2024, while class 2A will compete at the United Wireless Arena in Dodge City.The KSHSAA maintains a very strong relationship with Visit Manhattan and Kansas State University however this year’s KSHSAA State Basketball Championships conflict with the final week of the Big 12 Conference regular season. Kansas State expressed desire to host a home game for one or both of their basketball teams should that opportunity arise.
