TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Fort Hays State Football surged to a 56-0 shutout victory in its season opener at Northeastern State University on Thursday night (Aug. 31). The Tigers went up 7-0 about nine minutes into the game and then had a 28-point outburst in the second quarter to lead 35-0 at the half. They tacked on three more touchdowns in the second half to move to 1-0 on the season.

The Tigers opened the scoring on a 3-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jack Dawson. Dawson added on three touchdown passes in the second quarter, a 10-yard connection with Ryan Allen, a 6-yard toss to Cale Cormaney, and a 12-yard throw to Hosia Stokes. Before the Stokes score, the Tigers' Trey Hines blocked a punt and Mason Perez scooped the ball for a score to account for all of the scoring plays in the second quarter.

About four minutes into the second half, Dawson found Jayden Horace for a 25-yard touchdown connection and then Dawson capped a five passing touchdown night by connecting with Sloan Hayden from eight yards out about two minutes into the fourth quarter. Caleb Heavner picked up some action at quarterback and connected with Logan Heigele for a 30-yard touchdown pass with just over two minutes remaining to cap the scoring.

Dawson finished with 317 passing yards with an efficient 20-of-23 performance. His five-touchdown pass performance tied the school record for most in a game, accomplished now nine times. Robert Long and Chance Fuller each did it twice in their careers.

Heavner was 2-of-2 to give the Tigers a 22-of-25 night passing the ball for 349 yards and 6 passing scores. The Tigers netted 110 yards on the ground, led by Shane Watts with 41 yards. Stokes was credited with 132 receiving yards, but there will likely be some adjustments to stats yet in the coming days. Ty Cooper and Silas Etter were credited with a team-leading six tackles each.

The FHSU defense held NSU to 199 yards of total offense, allowing 83 yards on the ground and 116 through the air. The Tigers picked up their first shutout since September 18, 2021 when they delivered a 72-0 blowout against Lincoln.

Kansas tries to build on first bowl since 2008 in opener against Missouri State

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) —
Minnesota beat Nebraska 13-10 to ruin Huskers coach Matt Rhule’s
debut. Dragan Kesich kicked a 47-yard field goal as time expired
after Daniel Jackson’s toe-tap touchdown catch from Athan
Kaliakmanis tied the game with 2:32 left. Tyler Nubin had two of
Minnesota’s three interceptions of Nebraska newcomer Jeff Sims.
That included a leaping grab in the final minute that gave the
Gophers the ball at their 49 to set up the winning kick. Kaliakmanis
went 24 for 44 for 196 yards and one interception. The Gophers have
beaten the Huskers five straight times.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP)
— Bryson Barnes threw a 70-yard touchdown pass to Money Parks on
Utah’s first play of the game, rushed for another score and No. 14
Utes beat Florida 24-11 on Thursday night in the opener for both
teams. Nate Johnson split time at quarterback with Barnes for the
Utes with usual starter Cam Rising still recovering from a knee
injury in the Rose Bowl. Utah clamped down on defense in Rising’s
absence, forcing a turnover and getting five sacks. Graham Mertz
threw for 333 yards, a touchdown, and an interception in his first
start for the Gators. Ricky Pearsall had 92 yards on eight catches.
Florida drove inside the red zone four times but totaled only 10
points on those drives.

is finally getting back on the field eight months after losing to
Georgia in the College Football Playoff national championship game.
The 17th-ranked Horned Frogs open the season at home against

(AP) — Colorado is about to find out if it is ready for prime time
with new coach Deion Sanders after nearly nine months of extreme
hype. There has also been an unprecedented roster overhaul for the
Buffaloes. They will have 87 new players and only three returning
starters when they play their season opener Saturday at 17th-ranked
TCU, last season's national runner-up. The Frogs were 13-2 last
season, which began with a 38-13 win at Colorado. They had an
undefeated regular season, but now play for the first time since a
lopsided loss to Georgia in the national championship game.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) —
Oklahoma opens its final season as a Big 12 member before leaving for
the Southeastern Conference when it hosts Arkansas State. The Sooners
seek a strong start after finishing 6-7 last season under first-year
coach Brent Venables. Oklahoma needs to make its biggest jump on
defense. The Sooners ranked towards the bottom of the nation in
points and yards allowed per game. Arkansas State is coming off a 3-9
season under Butch Jones.

— Kevin Harvick is happy to get one more chance at the NASCAR

the track. Harvick will end his stellar career after this season and
become a TV analyst for Fox. Harvick is winless this season and will
start 15th among the 16 playoff drivers. He's had 10 top-10 finishes

BREMERTON, Wash.
(AP) — Years after assistant coach Joe Kennedy left a Washington
state high school football team over objections to his post-game
praying on the field, he has returned to the gridiron thanks to a
Supreme Court decision. His first game back is Friday. Kennedy’s
effort to be rehired became a cultural touchstone, pitting public
school employees’ religious liberties against longstanding
principles separating church and state and protecting students from
religious coercion. Kennedy says he has some anxiety that people are
going to be watching for him to pray after Friday's game and he
doesn't know how long he'll stick with the coaching job.

The Chiefs also cut DE Frank Clark to save salary cap space and let DE Carlos Dunlop leave in free agency, leaving second-year pro George Karlaftis and first-round pick Felix Anudike-Uzomah to provide pressure off the edge. FANTASY PLAYER TO WATCH: WR Skyy Moore. Someone has to catch all those passes from Mahomes and Moore, a second-round pick a year ago, has made tremendous strides. Kadarius Toney has struggled to stay on the field, missing most of camp with another injury, and it is difficult to predict what Rice will provide as a rookie. So while Marquez Valdes-Scantling offers the biggest upside in terms of yardage, Moore could easily pace the Chiefs in receptions this season.

Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs set out to repeat as Super Bowl champions

The Barton Community College men's golf team led the final two rounds of the 2nd Annual Hesston Fall Kickoff in closing with a 16-stroke title margin at the Hesston Golf Course.

Barton opened the two day 11-team kickoff with a second best first round 293, sitting four strokes back after Monday's morning round before taking the lead firing off a tournament best afternoon score of 285. The gritty Cougars returned to the course for Tuesday morning's final round, shooting another round best 287 to clinch the tournament at 13-over 865, 16-strokes better than host Hesston College's 881.

Three Cougars placed inside the top-11 of the 65-individual field. Sitting in second four strokes back after a 2-over 73 in Monday's opening round, Axel Bolander settled in shooting back-to-back under par rounds with a 5-under 66 and 3-under 68 finishing as the tournament champion with a 6-under par 207 earning a two-stroke victory over Blake Buessing's 4-under 209 of Fort Scott.  

Kaleb Lambert finished his first tournament as a Cougar tying for sixth with a 4-over 217 behind rounds of 71-73-73. Inside the top-10 following Monday's 77 and 69 scores, Simon Strandberg slipped just outside tying for 11th when the dust settled following a 75-final round, compiling a 4-over 221.

Tanapoom Kaewjoey carded the fourth team score for the Cougars finishing in a three-way tie for 17th place 11-over 224. Thantup Saengvut, who competed as an individual and not in the Barton team scoring, opened his tournament with his best round 71 before carding a 75 and 81 for a 14-over 227 and 21st placing.

Martin Chevallier fired off the most consistent rounds recording a 75-77-76 for a 25th finish at 15-over 228.

Joining Saengvut as an individual entry, Anthony Arriola concluded the placings with a 51st performance at 30-over 243.

Bolander and Barton golf wins 2nd Annual Hesston Fall Kickoff

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State coach Chris Klieman knows what it's like to have everyone in the conference watching out for you.

He lived it for five seasons at North Dakota State, where high expectations turned into four national championships.

So after the Wildcats snuck up on just about everybody in the Big 12 a year ago, beating College Football Playoff-bound TCU in the league title game, Klieman is back in some familiar territory. No. 16 Kansas State begins the season Saturday night against Southeast Missouri State, one of the better teams in the Football Championship Subdivision, knowing that it will get everyone's best shot in the newly expanded conference this season.

“There's a lot of great expectations out there, and I appreciate you guys throwing those high expectations on those guys, because they have earned the right because of what they did last year,” Klieman said. “But now we have to prove it on the field. There are a lot of guys that — here are the expectations, here is what was done — but they haven't done anything yet.”

In truth, there aren't a whole lot of them, at least in the starting roles on the initial depth chart.

Will Howard is back at the clear-cut starting quarterback after seizing the job from Adrian Martinez a year ago. His entire offensive line returns intact, though Christian Duffie will miss the opener with an injury. Phillip Brooks and RJ Garcia are back to headline the wide receiver corps, and tight end-fullback Ben Sinnott could be an NFL draft pick by the spring.

On defense, the Wildcats have some holes to fill in the secondary but return Kobe Savage, one of the best safeties in the Big 12 who dealt with injuries late last season. Defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah was a first-round pick of the Chiefs, but veterans Khalid Duke, Brendan Mott and Nate Matlock should provide plenty of trouble for opposing quarterbacks.

“It's been a long offseason,” Howard said, “but it's also flown by. And man, I couldn't be more pumped for this weekend.”

Southeast Missouri State is no pushover. They're ranked No. 11 in the preseason FCS coaches poll and, like Kansas State, return a bevy of starters. The list is headlined by running back Geno Hess, who needs just 1,038 yards to break the Ohio Valley’s career rushing record of 5,149 yards.

“Our biggest challenge, I think, is just going to be ourselves. Our ego,” Redhawks coach Tom Matukewicz said. “We do have a lot of great things going for us, but I struggle with my ego and I'm 50. What do you think a 20-year-old does? We just have to make sure we check our egos, have the courage to do the things it takes to keep ourselves on track.”

The Wildcats expect Carver Willis to start at right tackle with Duffie out. Defensive tackle Uso Seumalo also has been dealing with an injury and was not on the initial depth chart, but Klieman said one of the breakout stars of fall camp practiced earlier in the week and could be a game-time decision by Saturday night.

While the Wildcats are stocked with veterans, they could play a bunch of freshmen early in the season. No fewer than 10 were able to work their way onto the two-deep, including quarterback Avery Johnson, one of their top recruits in recent memory.

Johnson, a dual-threat athlete, was listed alongside returning backup Jake Rubley on the depth chart.

“We feel really comfortable at the quarterback spot,” Klieman said. “Everyone knows that Will is the guy, but both are competing every day for the No. 2 job. We'll just see how it plays out.”

Like most programs these days, the Wildcats hit the transfer portal to fill some of their biggest holes. Keagan Johnson will start at one of the wide receiver spots after arriving from Iowa, Florida State transfer Treshaun Ward will share carries with returning running back DJ Giddens, and Marques Sigle locked down a starting safety job after his arrival from North Dakota State.

The Redhawks, the defending Ohio Valley champions, should present a nice opening test for the Wildcats on defense. No. 16 K-State begins season of high expectations against FCS foe Southeast Missouri State

Thursday's cross country season opener at Lake Barton featured some state powerhouses. That did not make for an easy day for area runners. Twelve schools brought full teams for the large classification race. Great Bend finished eighth in that pack. Hoisington beat Ellinwood by a single placing for first place among the smaller schools.

Hoisington's Kamden Tarlton led area runners in 17:09.0, good enough for first place among the smaller schools by nearly three minutes and 11th place among all runners. The next three spots were determined by less than half a second. Hoisington senior Eli Lewis crossed in 19:54.0, followed by Central Plains senior Peyton Ryan in 19:54.2, and Hoisington senior Michael Hipp in 19:54.3. Lewis' time helped the Cards hang on in the team standings with 31 points against Ellinwood's 32.

Class 6A Garden City dominated the boys' race with 65 points. Class 4A powerhouse Buhler finished second with 72 points, followed by Bishop Carroll with 78. Great Bend and McPherson each scored 220 points with the Panthers moving to eight on a tiebreaker.

Reigning Class 5A state runner-up Kaleb Glazier of Maize, who doubles as the course-record holder at Lake Barton, won by 12 seconds in 16:18.1. Garden City senior Kailyn Munoz took the silver in 16:30.0.

Panther sophomore Izmael Ramirez paced Great Bend in 27th in 18:15.5. Sophomore Tavon Stroup finished two spots behind him in 18:18.9. Senior Alex Galindo made his debut in the sport with a 40th-place finish in 18:39.7. Senior Braylon Moore ran 63rd in 19:33.2, and senior Bradon Suppes collected the final team points in 70th in 20:10.5. Freshman Anthony Lawrence placed 71st in 20:11.5, and freshman Parker Coleman finished 73rd in 20:19.9. Lawrence finished seven seconds ahead of a Salina Central runner for the tiebreak.

Panther boys run eighth at home; Tarlton leads area runners

The field at the Great Bend High School Cross Country Invitational is not only getting bigger, it's also getting better. Lake Barton course record holder Katelyn Rupe and teammate Kaylie Shultz took the top two individual spots, but Great Bend cruised to the team championship with just 22 points. Bishop Carroll ran second with 75 points, and Salina South scored 130 points for third.

"I think I did well," said Lady Panther senior Eliana Beckham, who placed eighth. "I think our whole team did well. We had six in the top 15 so I think that's really exciting."

Salina Central's Rupe missed her course record set last October by 17 seconds but still won the meet by 39 seconds in 17:41.9. Shultz, who has broken most of Rupe's middle school records in Salina, ran second in 18:20.9.

Senior Addy Nicholson paced the Lady Panthers in third overall in 19:55.04, 13 seconds ahead of the fourth-place finisher from Hays. Great Bend junior Marissa Boone placed in 20:12.6.

"Katelyn and the new freshman, they're extraordinary," Nicholson said of her competitors. "There's no beating their talent so I just worry about myself."

Lady Panther senior Makenzie Premer is slated to play for the varsity volleyball team Thursday evening in Garden City. She opened the day with a 3.1 mile run, staying with Nicholson for the first half of the race. Premer was headed for a top-five finish before stumbling to the finish line in seventh with a time of 20:22.7.

"At the 200, I could feel my legs starting to turn to Jell-O," she said. "I looked back to see where the girl was and I saw she was coming so I tried to speed up and my legs just couldn't. I just collapsed because they felt like Jell-O. I had to tell myself to finish because I was not going to quit with 30 meters left to go. I haven't run under six minutes in a mile in practice so it was definitely eye-opening to see what that was like."

Senior Eliana Beckham ran eighth in 20:58.6, and sophomore Sienna Smith grabbed the final Lady Panther points in ninth in 21:01.5. Senior Morgan Beckwith placed 15th in 21:34.2, and freshman Teegan Guerra made her varsity debut with a 27th-place finish in 22:40.2.

The Barton Community College women's golf team opened the 2023-24 season in dominating fashion cruising to an 89-stroke victory at the 2nd Annual Fall Hesston Kickoff held at Hesston's Municipal Golf Course.

Returning just two sophomores off last season's 6th place team, the Cougars jumped out to an opening round 54-stroke advantage firing off a 33-over 317 before adding six extra strokes to Tuesday's round carding a 39-over 323 in settling their tournament wining margin with a 72-over 640 team score. Murray State College finished in the runner-up spot with a 161-over 729 while conference foe Fort Scott Community College concluded the field turning in a two-round total 168-over 736.

Barton took the top three spots and four of the top five individual spots in the 19-participant field, led by freshman Butpapaporn Sukterm. Carding a two-over par 73 in the opening round, Sukterm improved in final round action with an even-par 71 to win the event by 13 strokes with a 2-over 144. Valentina Leyva held steady in the runner-up spot shooting rounds of 8-over 79 and 7-over 78 for a 15-over 157 finish.

Sophomore Andrea Peraza played the most consistent rounds for the Cougars, carding a pair of 10-over 81's for a third-place finish 20-over 162 edging out Avery Scott's 21-over 163, of Fort Scott.

Frida Mondragon concluded the top-five placing for Barton firing a fifth place 22-over 177 carding 84 and 93 rounds for a 22-over 177.

Freshman Alayna Crosby had the biggest jump up the leaderboard, following an opening 100 in climbing two spots with a final round 23-over 94 to conclude her debut tournament tied for 11th at 52-over 194.

Brenna Ruyle was the fourth Cougar to show improvement in second round action by four strokes in bouncing back from a 101 with a 97 to place 14th at 56-over 198.

Kimito Fritz and Dennis Bottcher of the 11th ranked Barton Community College men's soccer team has been named the week two KJCCC Division I Player and Goalkeeper of the Week respectively.

The duo helped the Cougars get off to a 1-0-1 start to the season last week, winning their conference opener Wednesday 2-0 at Dodge City Community College before most recently picking up a draw Saturday at 5th ranked Iowa Western Community College.

Fritz contributed in big ways on both sides of the field for the Cougars, helping a stout defensive line allowing just nine shots in pair of games aiding the road shutout before picking an opportune time to register the sophomore's first collegiate goal coming in the 86th minute salvaging the nationally ranked battle to a draw.

Cougars sweeps KJCCC Men's Soccer weekly awards

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska's fight song begins, “There is no place like Nebraska.” When it comes to volleyball, those words never rang more true than Wednesday night.

The Cornhuskers laid claim to the world record for largest attendance at a women's sporting event with 92,003 filling Memorial Stadium for their volleyball match against Omaha.

The university took aim at the record last spring when it announced it would hold a daylong celebration of a sport that enjoys immense popularity in this state of fewer than 2 million.

“We took a chance by playing in Memorial Stadium, and to go for the record and break it. ... I don’t think anybody could have envisioned that when this whole thing started,” Nebraska coach John Cook said. “It feels like a great accomplishment for this sport called volleyball played by women. It’s a state treasure. We proved it.”

The event began with an exhibition between in-state Division II powers Nebraska-Kearney and Wayne State and was followed by the Huskers' three-set sweep of Omaha in a regular-season match. Country artist Scotty McCreery performed afterward.

The previous attendance record was 91,648, set during a Champions League soccer match when Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 5-2 at the Camp Nou Stadium in 2022.

Memorial Stadium's official capacity is just over 85,000 for football, but that number was higher for this event because there were seats and standing room on the field.

Fans in red and white started their tailgate parties outside the stadium hours before first serve of an exhibition Wayne State won in three sets. The stadium was one-quarter full at the start of that match and gradually filled to capacity as players for Omaha and Nebraska were warming up.

There was a flyover during the national anthem and, minutes before first serve, Cook led his Huskers into the stadium to the Tunnel Walk, the longtime tradition of the football team. Synchronized chants of “Go Big Red!” were heard all around.

Conditions were 83 degrees, clear skies and a south wind listed at 4-mph at court level with gusts that sometimes moved the ball in unpredictable ways.

Though 91,648 was widely acknowledged as the women’s sports attendance record, at least one match at the unofficial 1971 Women’s World Cup in Mexico City reportedly drew 110,000 people.

The American record attendance for a women’s sporting event had been 90,185 for the 1999 World Cup soccer final between the United States and China at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California — the game where Brandi Chastain ripped off her shirt after scoring the decisive penalty shot for the U.S. win.

The NCAA does not track attendance across all sports, but associate director of media coordination and statistics Jeff Williams said a crowd of 90,000-plus was easily among the largest for a non-football game. A 2010 outdoor hockey game between Michigan and Michigan State at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor drew more than 113,000 fans.

A message seeking comment from officials of Guinness World Records was not immediately returned.

Nebraska has sold out 306 consecutive regular-season matches. (Wednesday's event won't count toward the streak because it is not being held on the team's Devaney Center court.) The Huskers have led the nation in attendance every season since 2013, and eight of the top nine crowds in NCAA volleyball history are matches that have involved Nebraska.

Nebraska has won five national championships in volleyball, and its program is one of the few in Division I women's sports that turns a profit — $1 million last year, according to athletic department CFO Doug Ewald.

“This is a statement on Title IX, and having two daughters of my own, what Title IX has done for women's sports is huge,” fan Troy Pfannenstiel of Omaha said before the matches.

Chancellor Rodney Bennett canceled classes for the day. NCAA President Charlie Baker, Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti were on hand, as was Gov. Jim Pillen. So were Husker volleyball players who were part of iconic coach Terry Pettit's teams over four decades. High school teams from across a state stretching 430 miles border to border were excused from classes to attend.

There are 75 women from the state of Nebraska who are on Division I volleyball rosters this season. At 44 players per million in population, the state trails only Hawaii (67 per million) in Division I players produced per capita, according to volleyball statistician and historian Rich Kern of RichKern.com.

“You don’t think you’re going to be part of a world record event, and seeing how much everyone supports volleyball and wanted to be part of that record is awesome to see,” Omaha's Shayla McCormick said.

Volleyball has surpassed basketball as the No. 1 girls high school team sport in the United States. It’s long been No. 1 in Nebraska.

About 7,000 girls play high school volleyball in the state. Volleyball has been played in varying forms in Nebraska since the early 1900s. For many years, girls volleyball matches were warmup acts for boys basketball games. Volleyball became a sanctioned sport in 1972 and took off in the late 1970s when Pettit invited many of the state’s high school coaches to work at his camps in Lincoln.

Pettit also conducted so-called “satellite” clinics in small towns across the state. In a place where boys grow up dreaming of becoming Cornhusker football players, many girls are equally passionate about some day playing volleyball for a Nebraska team that annually ranks among the nation’s elite.

Ella Beck, 10, came with a group from tiny Pierce to see her first college volleyball match and root for her favorite player, setter Lexi Rodriguez.

Neveah Kehr, 10, came with her mom, Nicki, from Bismarck, North Dakota, to be part of the event. Nicki graduated from Nebraska, and she brought up her daughter watching the Huskers on television.

Neveah wore the No. 5 jersey of middle blocker Bekka Allick at a pep rally before the matches and, with more than 1,000 fans cheering, was invited to walk to where the players stood and was introduced to the woman she called her idol.

Nebraska volleyball stadium event draws 92,003 to set women's world attendance record

TCU is finally getting back on the field eight months after losing to Georgia in the College Football Playoff national championship game. The 17th-ranked Horned Frogs open the season at home against Colorado, which is playing its first game for new coach Deion Sanders. TCU won in Boulder in last year's opener. The Buffaloes rejoin the Big 12 from the Pac-12 next season. There are four new teams in the Big 12 this season. BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF all play their openers at home. So do 11th-ranked Texas and No. 20 Oklahoma to start their final seasons in the league.

Things to watch during the opening weekend in the Big 12 Conference:

No. 17 TCU vs. Colorado. The Horned Frogs finally get back on the field nearly eight months after their lopsided loss to Georgia in the College Football Playoff national championship game while Colorado will play its first game for new coach Deion Sanders. The completely revamped Buffaloes, who next season return from the Pac-12 to the Big 12, won just one game last year. But there are 87 newcomers and only nine returning scholarship players for Sanders' coaching debut in the Power Five.

Chandler Morris again goes into the season as TCU's starting quarterback, like last year when he started the opener at Colorado before getting hurt in the second half. Max Duggan took over and was the Heisman Trophy runner-up. New Buffs starting quarterback Shedeur Sanders came with his dad from Jackson State after throwing for 6,983 yards and 70 TDs the past two seasons.

Big 12 newcomer Houston, bringing coach Dana Holgorsen back into the conference, opens against UTSA for the second year in a row. Then-No. 24 Houston won in triple overtime last year. The Roadrunners have switched from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference, the league Houston just left. UTSA has seventh-year QB Frank Harris, who accounted for 400 total yards (337 passing, 63 rushing) and four TDs vs. Houston last year. Four-year Cougars quarterback Clayton Tune is gone. Holgorsen was West Virginia's coach for its move into the Big 12 in 2012.

Houston and the other three teams making their Big 12 debuts this season open at home: UCF (vs. Kent State) on Thursday, then Cincinnati (vs. Eastern Kentucky) and BYU (vs. Sam Houston) on Saturday. ... This also marks the final Big 12 season for 11th-ranked Texas and No. 20 Oklahoma before they go to the Southeastern Conference. The Sooners, 99-23-6 in season openers, are home against Arkansas State. The Longhorns will go for their 16th consecutive win over Rice, and 44th in 45 meetings since 1965.

Junior QB Jalon Daniels, the preseason Big 12 offensive player of the year, had Kansas off to a 5-0 start last season and in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2009 before he hurt his shoulder and missed four games. He returned late for the Jayhawks, throwing for 544 yards and five TDs in their triple-overtime loss to Arkansas in the Liberty Bowl. He dealt with some back tightness in camp, but is expected to be ready Friday against Missouri State.

With coach Neal Brown on the hot seat going into his fifth season, West Virginia opens at seventh-ranked Penn State. It’s the first meeting since 1992 for the schools that are only about 180 miles apart. The Mountaineers won three in a row from 1953-55, but are 2-34-1 since against the Nittany Lions. ... Oklahoma State has won its last 27 home openers, the longest streak in school history. Only Florida with 33 in a row has a longer active FBS streak. The Cowboys host FCS team Central Arkansas. ... Baylor finished 2022 with a four-game losing streak, but is 9-0 in its series against Texas State. ... No. 16 Kansas State, the defending Big 12 champion, has a national-best 129 non-offensive touchdowns since 1999.

A pair of net shakers in less than two minutes powered the 11th ranked Barton Community College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory Wednesday evening at Coffeyville Community College.

Following a scoreless first half, Barton took a 2-0 lead within the first seven minutes out of the locker room before holding on the final twenty-eight minutes for the victory.

The Cougars improved to 2-0 in their pair of road conference games and 2-0-1 overall while spoiling Coffeyville's league opener in dropping to 1-1-1 overall.

Barton continues its tough early season schedule on Friday hosting 12th ranked Indian Hills Community College in a 10:00 a.m. kick followed by a Sunday 9:00 a.m. kick versus 2022 national tournament qualifier Jefferson College.

It took less than sixty seconds Wednesday evening for the 10th ranked Barton Community College women's soccer team to produce the winning goal in riding out a 2-0 victory at 19th ranked Coffeyville Community College.

Turning a defensive end ball to the Cougars' game winner, the Cougars executed a series of passes for the eventual game winner just fifty-three seconds in the game. Rin Sato began the play with a long pass from deep in Barton territory with Beatriz Baldi's redirecting in the midfield leading to her first collegiate assist. The pass led to the Red Ravens' nightmare scenario facing Nina Norshie in a 1v1 situation with the Barton sophomore's one-touched chip over the keeper finding the net.

Less than six minutes into second half action, Norshie doubled the lead with her 46th career goal by pick-pocketing a Red Raven defender then firing near post to all but seal the victory.

Barton improves to 2-0-1 in conference play and overall while handing the Red Ravens the first defeat of their three games on the season and 1-1 in conference action.

The Cougars will step out of conference play next Wednesday in a trip to Winfield for a 7:00 p.m. kick versus the junior varsity squad of Southwestern College before getting back to KJCCC action on Saturday, September 9, hosting Kansas City Kansas Community College.

Barton Men and Women pick up road wins at Coffeyville

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Andre Jackson pitched two-hit ball into the sixth inning in his first major league win, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1 on Wednesday night for a three-game sweep.

Jackson (1-1) struck out a career-high seven and walked two in 5 2/3 innings. The 27-year-old right-hander, who made his big league debut in 2021 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, allowed one run in his 20th major league appearance.

“We saw in the fourth and fifth his velo started to tick down,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. ”But the changeup still played. He was able to execute some pitches."

Jackson became the first Pirate to strike out the first five batters in a game since Bruce Kison in 1979. But the last part of his outing was more difficult.

“I felt like I started out strong and then kind of lost a little steam," he said. "I tried to get ahead of guys. I battled.”

Bryan Reynolds and Jack Suwinski homered for the Pirates (61-73), and Vinny Capra hit an RBI double.

It was the first sweep for Pittsburgh since June 27-29 versus San Diego. The Pirates limited the Royals to four runs and 12 hits in the series.

“We pitched well,” Shelton said. "That’s where it starts. We did a really good job. (Jackson) did a good job starting out the game with five punchouts to get his first career win. Overall we just played solid baseball all around.”

Kansas City was swept for the 12th time this year. The Royals (41-94) have dropped six in a row and are on pace for 113 losses, which would break the club record of 106.

Bobby Witt Jr. hit his 27th homer for Kansas City. Witt, who has 38 steals, is trying to become the first player in franchise history to finish with at least 30 homers and 30 steals in the same season.

Royals left-hander Angel Zerpa (1-3) gave up three runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings.

“His stuff was good in the first couple of innings,” Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro said. “He just struggled to get it in the zone. He was all around the zone at the beginning. But then, as he started to get more efficient in the zone he got quick outs.”

After Jackson departed, Ryan Borucki, Thomas Hatch, Colin Holderman and David Bednar combined for 3 1/3 innings of two-hit ball. Bednar worked the ninth for his 29th save.

The Pirates jumped in front when Reynolds launched a 436-foot drive to left-center in the first inning. It was his 19th homer this season.

Pittsburgh scored two more in the second. Capra drove in Liover Peguero with a double for his first career extra-base hit and RBI. Suwinski added a run-scoring single.

Witt responded with a leadoff shot in the fourth. He also drove a pitch to the wall in right-center with a runner on in the sixth, but Suwinski chased it down.

Suwinski connected in the seventh for his first homer since July 24 and No. 22 on the year.

“It’s challenging to do everything you can and still go through tough stretches,” Suwinski said. "It was great having the team carry me.”

Royals: C Salvador Perez was scratched because of tightness in his upper back/neck. ... RHP John McMillon was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm strain. RHP Taylor Clarke was reinstated from the family medical emergency list.

Pirates: RHP Mitch Keller (11-8, 4.01 ERA) starts Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at St. Louis. RHP Dakota Hudson (5-1, 4.41 ERA) takes the mound for the Cardinals.

The Barton Community College volleyball team opened up the conference and home slate Wednesday evening with a straight set sweep over Garden City Community College (25-15, 25-15, 25-18).

Improving to 8-1 on the year, Barton will next make its second trip to McCook, Nebraska, in participating in the McCook Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Cougars' first two matches begin with its third season's matchup against North Platte at 1:00 p.m. followed by a 5:00 p.m. tilt against Gillette College. On Saturday the Cougars will have consecutive matches beginning at 10:00 a.m. against Laramie County Community College with Southeast Community College wrapping up the weekend.

Naya Danenberg and Phoebe Reyes led the team with 12 kills each on .393 and .333 attack percentages respectively. Elena Stankovic's 21 assists with Maurin Reyes' 19 assists led the team's .343 attack with just 10 errors on 105 swings.

homered for the Braves, who finished 7-0 against the Rockies for
their third season sweep of Colorado. Atlanta outscored Colorado
64-20 over the season sweep. 
The Braves went 6-0
against Colorado in 2003 and 13-0 in 1993, the first year of the
Rockies’ existence. Atlanta has won its last eight game at Coors
Field against the Rockies, who lost for the ninth time in 10 games.
The Braves are a major league-best 87-45, and have won 17 of their

The conference commissioners who manage the College Football Playoff
have met for the first time since a wave of realignment tore apart
the Pac-12. The changing landscape raises the possibility that the
number of automatic bids in the 12-team format could be tweaked. This

The University of Nebraska laid claim to the world record for largest
attendance at a women’s sporting event with 92,003 filling Memorial
Stadium for the Cornhuskers’ volleyball match against Omaha. The
university took aim at the record last spring when it announced it
would hold a daylong celebration of a sport that enjoys immense
popularity in this state of fewer than 2 million. The event began
with an exhibition between in-state Division II powers
Nebraska-Kearney and Wayne State and was followed by the Huskers’
three-set sweep of Omaha in a regular-season match. The previous
attendance record was 91,648, set during a soccer match in Spain last
