KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have proven this season that they can beat just about anybody when they're playing their best.

They can lose quite easily when they are not.

It's a marked difference from past years, when Kansas City could overcome penalties, dropped passes and other miscues to win anyway. The Chiefs went 15-2 last season largely because they were able to stay in games they had no business winning, but the good fortune has not carried over; they find themselves 5-4 after&nbsp;a 28-21 loss in Buffalo on Sunday.

“We've had great moments and we've had bad moments,”&nbsp;Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. "We've got to be more consistent as a team. I've got to be more consistent at quarterback. We've got to be able to battle.

“We've been in a lot of these types of close games in our history, and they are not going our way now. So how can we deal with that adversity? How can we be better and learn from it? You can only learn from so many losses."

The game against the Bills marked a fitting bookend to the first half of the season for Kansas City, because it bared a close resemblance to its season opener in Brazil. In that one, the Chiefs played similarly poorly, had to deal with injuries that popped up during the game and still had a chance at the end, only for their defense to come up short when it needed a stop.

Indeed, health is becoming a problem for the Chiefs again, especially along the offensive line.

They hope to get first-round draft pick Josh Simmons back at some point, but the talented left tackle has been away from the team to deal with a family situation for several weeks. Then, against Buffalo, right tackle Jawaan Taylor hurt his ankle, and for a moment, left guard Kingsley Suamataia also left the game, leaving Kansas City with a patchwork offensive line.

Throw in a sprained knee ligament that sidelined running back Isiah Pacheco, and it was hardly a surprise that the Chiefs only managed to match their second-lowest point total this season; they scored 17 in a loss against Philadelphia.

“We've got to do a little better than that, obviously, when we're playing a good football team,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “It starts with me, doing my job better, putting guys in good position there to make some plays.”

Now the Chiefs are in a strange position: If the playoffs happened this week, they would be on the outside looking in.

Instead of fighting for the No. 1 seed down the stretch, they are forced to fight for any seed they can get.

“It's going to be an uphill battle when we get back,” Mahomes said, “but I think our guys are up to it.”

The Chiefs are getting what they hoped from their wide receiver triumvirate of Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy and Marquise Brown.

Worthy missed time after hurting his shoulder in the opener against the Chargers, and Rice missed six games while serving an&nbsp;NFL suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy. But since the three of them have been available, they have managed to kick-start an offense that until this past Sunday had begun to resemble the Reid-and-Mahomes offenses of yesteryear.

The Kansas City defensive line has been pushed around far too often this season, and it may have had its worst game yet against the Bills, when James Cook ran for 114 yards and Josh Allen kept sneaking into the end zone for touchdowns.

Defensive back Trent McDuffie is going to cost the Chiefs a fortune when the two sides agree to a contract extension. He's been the best player on defense all season, and he capped the first half of the year with 12 tackles and a sack against Buffalo.

Defensive tackle Chris Jones has just two sacks through nine games, putting one of the NFL's highest-paid players on pace for his least-productive season in that department since his rookie year, when he was a part-time starter in 2016.

The Chiefs hope to get Pacheco and Taylor back after the bye.

5 — That's the number of losses in six regular-season games against Buffalo that Mahomes has started since the 2019 season. It also is the number of losses combined that Kansas City has in 35 games against the AFC West.

The Chiefs have a week to get healthy before visiting Denver on Nov. 16. They are just 1-3 on the road this season.

Chiefs' struggles continue, with injuries and inconsistency contributing to 5-4 first half of season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Catcher Salvador Perez will remain with the Kansas City Royals rather than become a free agent, agreeing Tuesday to a two-year contact.

A nine-time All-Star, the 36-year-old had an&nbsp;$82 million, four-year contract&nbsp;that included a $13.5 million club option for 2026 with a $2 million buyout.

“Salvy is a Royals legend and one of the most important players this franchise has ever had,” general manager J.J. Picollo said in a statement. “We had the option for next year, but everyone knew we wanted to make sure his legacy with us continued longer than that. We appreciate Salvy’s commitment to the Royals, and we’re just as excited as our fans.”

Perez, Kansas City's captain, was MVP of the 2015 World Series, when the Royals won their second title and first since 1985.

Perez hit .236 with 30 homers and 100 RBIs, his third season with 100 or more. A five-time Gold Glove winner, he has a .264 average with 303 homers and 1,016 RBIs in 14 seasons, all with the Royals.

Saudi Arabia's wealth fund now has a deal with an American golf league. The LPGA Tour has announced it will co-sanction a PIF Global Series event with the Ladies European Tour. The Aramco Championship will be played the first week in April at prestigious Shadow Creek Golf Club in Las Vegas. The purse will be $4 million. Aramco has been a big supporter of the Ladies European Tour for the last five years, and several LPGA players have been competing in those events. Nelly Korda is a two-time winner. New LPGA commissioner Craig Kessler says the event ticks every box.

Bayern Munich has handed Paris Saint-Germain a first loss in its Champions League title defense while Liverpool beat Real Madrid 1-0 in another blockbuster matchup. The deal for Williams on trade deadline day came after the lower-profile addition of linebacker Logan Wilson from Cincinnati. The Cowboys are giving a 2027 first-round draft pick, a 2026 second-rounder and underperforming defensive tackle Mazi Smith to the Jets. The Cowboys gained first-round picks in the next two drafts in another blockbuster. That was the trade that sent star pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers a week before the season.

The format switch could boost LIV’s bid to be recognized by the Official World Golf Ranking. That is critical because the four majors use the ranking to help determine their fields. McIlroy has been outspoken about LIV so was asked for his view of the change to 72 holes. He says “I think it’s a peculiar move ... A fortunate first half bounce proved all the difference as the Barton Community College women's soccer team made the early break hold up Sunday evening, grinding out a 1-0 victory over Garden City Community College in the Plains District/Region 6 quarterfinals at the FHSU Soccer Complex.

Now 12-7-2 on the season, the Cougars advance to Wednesday's semifinal round at No. 7 and top seeded Cowley College in Arkansas City, while the Broncbusters close the year at 11-7-2.

Barton struck for the lone goal in the 25th minute, as&nbsp;Kayla Methman's free kick from near midfield placed into the box glanced off a Garden City defender and deflected back into the net for an own goal that stood as the difference.

The Cougar defense held firm the rest of the way, limiting Broncbuster chances throughout the night.&nbsp;Leonie Chambe&nbsp;recorded four saves to notch her second solo shutout of the season as both teams finished even in shots at 11-apiece.

No. 4 Cougars rally past Coffeyville 2-1, advance to Plains District Semifinals

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas freshman Darryn Peterson made his presence felt in an abbreviated stint against Green Bay in the teams' season opener.

Peterson, a potential No. 1 pick in next summer's NBA draft, scored 21 points in 22 minutes in his debut for the&nbsp;No. 19 Jayhawks in a 94-51 win over Green Bay&nbsp;on Monday night.

“That was literally the easiest 21 points in 21 minutes of action,” Green Bay coach Doug Gottlieb said. “I thought our guys guarded well. ... I don’t think he broke a sweat.”

Peterson scored 26 points in 25 minutes in Kansas’ exhibition opener against Louisville. But, he missed the next exhibition game against Fort Hays State because of cramps.

Kansas coach Bill Self said Peterson could have played more than 22 minutes if it was necessary Monday night.

But, the combination of returning cramps and a 21-point halftime lead made keeping Peterson out an easy decision for Self, especially with a game against No. 25 North Carolina looming on Friday night in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

“It was bothering him,” Self said. “He said he felt it coming on. So (there was) no reason to (push it). Hopefully we can get him out there for practice tomorrow. If it had been a closer game, I’m sure he would try to go back out there.”

Peterson was especially impressive in the first half, when he scored 18 of his points. He was 6 of 10 from the field, including hitting two of Kansas’ three 3-pointers. He also had three rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.

“We loved him on film more so than a lot of the other freshmen around the country,” Gottlieb said.

After seeing him in game action, Self said he’s impressed with more than just the effortless scoring ability his prized freshman possesses.

“He makes the game look easy,” Self said. “It’s not that easy. In the first half, he was playing downhill, and he played really well. He’s a good player. His poise is well beyond his years, without question.

“Teams will do a good job guarding him. He’ll have off nights, and that stuff’s going to happen. He’s young, but he’s about as mature as any 18-year old around anywhere.”

Self, who is a stickler for defense, even likes Peterson’s defensive effort.

“I think he could be great defensively. He could be. It’s like the hashtag-potential, which means it has not happened yet. But I think he could be great defensively.

“I think he loves playing. And the last I checked, that’s 50 percent of being out there.”

Feeling a bit neglected in Switzerland while playing for the USA 19-and-under team, the three-time Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year said he was going to remind people he was one of the best incoming freshmen, despite not playing in the McDonald’s All-American Game or at the Nike Hoop Summit. Jayden Daniels has a dislocated left elbow, and Washington coach Dan Quinn did not have a timetable for his return when he provided an update Monday. Quinn began his video conference by admitting it was a mistake to leave Daniels in the game in the fourth quarter Sunday night. The Commanders were down 38-7 to Seattle in a game they’d eventually lose 38-14, and Daniels had already missed time this season with knee and hamstring problems. ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves have hired Walt Weiss as their manager to succeed Brian Snitker. Weiss has been the Braves’ bench coach since 2018 and was on Snitker’s staff when they won the World Series in 2021. This is Weiss’ second major league managing job after four seasons with the Colorado Rockies from 2013-16. Weiss finished his playing career as a shortstop with Atlanta from 1998-2000. Snitker announced in early October he would not be returning for an 11th year with the club.

Victor Conte has died at 75 years old. He was the architect of a scheme to provide undetectable performance-enhancing drugs to professional athletes. They included baseball stars Barry Bonds and Jason Giambi and Olympic track champion Marion Jones. A sports nutrition company Conte founded said in a social media post that he died Monday. It didn't disclose his cause of death. The federal government’s investigation into another company Conte founded led to the convictions of Jones, elite sprint cyclist Tammy Thomas and former NFL defensive lineman Dana Stubblefield. Also convicted were coaches, distributors, a trainer, a chemist and a lawyer.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes wasn’t in the mood to look too far ahead after one of the worst performances of his career in Kansas City’s latest showdown — and regular-season loss — against Buffalo.

And that was especially true when the discussion turned to the potential of yet another rematch with the Bills in the playoffs.

“We’ve got to get there first,” Mahomes said&nbsp;following a 28-21 loss Sunday&nbsp;when he had one of the worst passing games of his career.

The Chiefs (5-4) have lost five straight regular-season meetings against Buffalo. But they're 4-0 when facing the Bills in the playoffs since the 2020 postseason, including a win in last season's AFC championship game.

Just when it appeared the Chiefs had found their groove while winning three straight and five of six, they took a step back against the Bills.

“We’ve had great moments and we’ve had bad moments,” Mahomes said. “We’ve got to be more consistent as a team. I’ve got to be more consistent at quarterback. And we’ve got to be able to battle.”

Mahomes closed a disappointing performance with three straight incompletions from Buffalo’s 40 and the two-time NFL MVP finished 15 of 34 for 250 yards with an interception. It was the first time in a nine-year career he completed fewer than 50% of his passes, and just the 10th time Mahomes failed to complete a TD pass in a regular-season game.

As for his interception, it ended Kansas City’s second-to-last possession with 4:18 left. Facing third-and-11 at the Chiefs 23, Mahomes was being pressured when he threw a pass up the right sideline that&nbsp;was intercepted by rookie Maxwell Hairston.

The Bills defense harassed Mahomes throughout with three sacks and 15 quarterback hits.

Mahomes was outdueled by Josh Allen, who set a team record by completing 88% of his passes (23 of 26) for 273 yards, and had three TDs — one passing and two rushing.

“You know it’s going to come down to a couple of plays, and they made those plays today,” Mahomes said. “Josh was amazing.”

The outing for Mahomes came on the heels of a three-game winning streak in which he completed 74% of his passes for an average of 281 yards with nine touchdowns and two interceptions. It was a three-game run in which the Chiefs beating the Lions, Raiders and Commanders by a combined score of 89-24.

“They have good pass rushers and they had a good plan of doing some games up front and pushing the pocket,” Mahomes said. “I’ve got to be better at working the pocket and finding different lanes to step up into.”

He had a few highlights, such as completing a 29-yard pass to convert fourth-and-17 on a drive that Kareem Hunt capped with a 1-yard touchdown run to cut Buffalo’s lead to 28-21.

There was also his 40-yard completion to Hollywood Brown at the Bills 1 in the final minute of the first half. The Chiefs, however, had to settle for Harrison Butker's 19-yard field goal after Hunt was stopped for no gain and Mahomes threw two completions.

The bad, however, outweighed the good, including the Chiefs turning the ball over on downs in the second quarter, when safety Cole Bishop broke up Mahomes’ short pass over the middle intended for Rashee Rice.

The Bills took over at their 40 and built a 21-10 lead on Allen’s first of two 1-yard touchdown runs.

Rice had 80 yards on four receptions and ran&nbsp;for a 3-yard touchdown on a direct snap&nbsp;in the first quarter. Hunt also scored on a 2-yard run, while Butker was good on two field-goal attempts.

“Against a team like this,” coach Andy Reid said, “you’ve got to be able to score touchdowns. Not field goals.”

Mahomes was overheard rallying his teammates in the visiting locker room after the game.

“We’ve got to do it now,” Mahomes said. “There’s no easy games coming up and there’s no more chances where we can take losses. We’ve got to learn from it fast.”

Kansas City gets a break by entering its bye week before facing current AFC West division-leader Denver (7-2).

“It’s going to be an uphill battle when we get back,” Mahomes said. “But I think our guys are up for it.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — Jayden Daniels left Washington’s game against Seattle with an injury to his left, non-throwing arm. Daniels' arm bent gruesomely while he was being tackled near the goal line in the fourth quarter. The Commanders were down 38-7 at the time, raising questions about why Daniels was still in the game. It was yet another injury for the second-year quarterback in a season that has quickly spiraled for Washington. Daniels had just come back from a hamstring injury that caused him to miss the previous game at Kansas City. He also missed two games earlier this season with a knee injury.

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Kyle Larson has denied Denny Hamlin his first career championship at Phoenix Raceway. A late caution sent the title-deciding finale into overtime. Hamlin was three laps from shedding the label as the greatest NASCAR driver to never win a championship when William Byron got a flat tire and hit the wall. Hamlin led the field down pit road and got four new tires on his Toyota. Larson only took two tires in his Chevrolet. Auburn fired coach Hugh Freeze after the Tigers lost for the 12th time in their last 15 Southeastern Conference games. Lewis is the second-oldest active player in the NFL behind Aaron Rodgers, who will turn 42 in December. Lewis was signed to the practice squad on Wednesday and promoted to the active roster Saturday.

The No. 18 Barton Community College men's basketball team capped its season-opening Arizona swing with a statement victory Saturday night, holding off No. 15 Eastern Arizona College, 76-73, inside Guitteau Gymnasium in Thatcher, Arizona.

The victory wrapped up a successful season-opening weekend for the Cougars, who completed their two-game Arizona road swing 2-0 after opening Friday with a 74-67 win over Arizona Western. Meanwhile, Eastern Arizona slipped to 1-1 on the season.

Barton set the tone with a 48-point first half, using a 27-9 stretch midway through the frame to turn an early 11-point deficit into a 17-point advantage. The Cougars maintained control through much of the second half, pushing the margin back to 17 with 6:31 to play before weathering a late Gila Monster rally. A 13-0 Eastern Arizona surge over the final four minutes trimmed the deficit to three with seven seconds remaining, but a missed front-end of a one-and-one left the door open before a top-of-the-key three in the final seconds fell short to secure the victory.

Sophomore&nbsp;Aris Rodriguez&nbsp;led all scorers with 27 points, adding six rebounds and three steals in 32 minutes of action. Freshman&nbsp;Jayden Ramirez&nbsp;followed with 17 points, going a perfect 8-for-8 from the strip, while sophomore&nbsp;Pavel Ivanov&nbsp;led the bench production chipping in 13 points and six boards.&nbsp;Majok Chuol&nbsp;anchored the paint with a game-high 10 rebounds, to go along with two points and a block.

Friday's Recap vs Arizona WesternThe No. 18 Barton Community College men's basketball team started its 2025-26 campaign on the winning side Friday night, securing a 74-67 victory over Arizona Western College at the Gila Monster Shootout in Thatcher, Arizona.

After suffering a quick 2-0 deficit, Barton answered with a 7-0 run to take the lead into the under-16 media timeout and never look back. The Cougars maintained the advantage the rest of the way, allowing the Matadors to close within three only twice over the next four minutes.

Barton created the needed separation late in the first half, piecing together an 11-0 run over a two-minute span. The Cougars carried that momentum to close the half on a 14-2 stretch and take a 37-21 lead into halftime.

The double-digit cushion remained throughout much of the second half, stretching to as many as 19 following a Rodriguez personal 5-2 run with 9:08 remaining. The sixth-ranked Barton Community College volleyball team put the finishing touches on its regular season Saturday evening in front of the home crowd, dispatching Cloud County Community College in straight sets (25-13, 25-6, 25-16).

Riding an efficient .333 team attack and service onslaught featuring 12 aces, the Cougars cruised to their 10th consecutive victory to finish 28-5 overall and 15-1 in KJCCC play. Cloud County wrapped up its campaign at 6-28 overall and 0-16 in league action.

The triumph locked Barton into the top seed heading into next week's Region 6/Plains District playoffs, beginning Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. hosting Pratt Community College in the first round. Should the Cougars advance, Barton would next play in the semifinal round Saturday at Fort Hays State University's Gross Memorial Coliseum.

A balanced Cougar attack was led by&nbsp;Indigo Pruitt's near-flawless .833 efficiency on 10 kills in 12 swings, while&nbsp;Caroliny Cristiny&nbsp;and&nbsp;Aubrey Olander&nbsp;chipped in eight and five kills respectively, each hitting .333.

No. 6 Barton Volleyball closes regular season with dominant sweep of Cloud County

The Barton Community College wrestling team opened its 2025-26 campaign Saturday afternoon on the road, dropping a 41-9 decision to Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa inside the Tonkawa High School.

The Mavericks controlled the early portion of the dual, racing out to a 29-0 advantage through the opening six weight classes before the Cougars broke through in the upper weight classes.

At 174 pounds, sophomore&nbsp;Derek Truman&nbsp;put Barton on the board, needing just 1:46 to stick Keaton Belsha for the Cougars first victory of the season.

Dominic Riccardi&nbsp;followed with an 8-3 decision at 184 pounds over NOC-Tonkawa's Jessie Chavez, trimming the deficit to 29-9 to hand Barton back-to-back victories.

The Mavericks closed out the final two bouts with a pair of falls to secure the dual.

In exhibition competition,&nbsp;Manuel "Kike" Yanez&nbsp;(125),&nbsp;Brennen Pfannenstiel&nbsp;(149), and&nbsp;Brody Schnoebelen&nbsp;(197) each earned victories by fall to highlight additional Cougar efforts.

St. James Academy has been the team to beat in the girls' race at the Class 5A State Championships. Saturday at Rim Rock Farm near Lawrence, it was the other private schools in the classification dominating the field. Kapaun Mt. Carmel cruised to the win with 58 points, followed by Bishop Carroll with 79 points. The next three teams battled for the final trophy with St. James Academy winning the tie break against Blue Valley Southwest, both with 103 points. Aquinas scored 105 points for fifth, followed by Great Bend in sixth with 187 points.

With no Ryin Miller in this year's race, Salina Central junior Kaylie Shultz was able to beat the field by 10 seconds in 17:26 for the individual title. Kapaun's Ava Claasen ran second in 17:36, and Andover's Madelyn Wallace took the bronze in 18:30.

Panther freshman Decorah Schroeter earned all-state honors in 14th with a time of 19:24.19, missing the top 10 by just under 10 seconds. Freshman Sydney Stein ran 23rd in 19:40.55 to miss all-state honors by nine seconds. Junior Bella Long placed 27th in 19:53.25, and sophomore Samantha Negaard finished 65th in 21:29.01. Makenzie Gwin scored the final team points in 89th with a time of 22:54.26. Alyssa Prendergrast followed in 23:17.88 for 91st, and Sydney James ran 93rd in 23:58.89.

The boys' team race was one of the best in history as Kapaun and Blue Valley Southwest each scored 42 points. Kapaun's sixth runner finished 24th ahead of Southwest's final runner in 38th to secure the team title. De Soto finished a distant third with 112 points. The Great Bend boys placed 11th with 258 points.

Kapaun senior Daniel Enriquez saved the day for his team, winning the individual title by 14 seconds in 15:12.42. The next three finishers hailed from Blue Valley Southwest.

Lady Panthers finish sixth at state XC meet; Stroup leads boys in 22nd

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Behren Morton threw for 249 yards and two touchdowns in his return from an injury, J'Koby Williams ran for 135 yards and a score, and No. 13 Texas Tech romped past sloppy, mistake-prone Kansas State 43-20 on Saturday.

Cameron Dickey also had a touchdown run for the Red Raiders (8-1, 5-1 Big 12), who forced five turnovers while snapping an eight-game losing streak against the Wildcats (4-5, 3-3) with their first win in Manhattan since the 2008 season.

“That was a huge win,” said Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire, who arrived for his postgame news conference wearing a T-shirt with a photo of former Kansas State linebacker-turned-Red Raiders athletic director Kirby Hocutt across the front of it.

“This is no disrespect to K-State,” McGuire said. “It's a tip of my hat to my AD who played linebacker here, and it's been a long time since we beat Kansas State. ... I know it was a big win for him and a huge win for this team.”

Texas Tech is off to its best start in conference play since that year, when Mike Leach guided the team to the Cotton Bowl.

“Winning the turnover battle is a huge thing for us," said Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, the preseason Big 12 defensive player of the year, who forced two of the fumbles. "And we knew we had to do that to win.”

Avery Johnson threw for 199 yards and a touchdown while running for 86 and two more scores. But Kansas State's quarterback also threw two interceptions and was responsible for a late fumble that Texas Tech returned for a touchdown.

Along with the slew of turnovers, the Wildcats also were 0 for 4 on fourth down.

“I thought our guys battled on defense,” Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said. "We just didn’t have enough.”

Morton, who had been out of the lineup with a leg injury, opened the game with an interception of his own. But Johnson threw a pick right back, and it was the beginning of a messy first half in which both failed on fourth down, Kansas State lost a fumble and Texas Tech nearly did the same.

The Red Raiders eventually made Kansas State pay for its mistakes, though.

They turned a fumble by Jayce Brown into a touchdown to take a 9-7 lead. They turned a three-and-out late in the first half into a 55-yard field goal. And they turned another fumble, this time from Garrett Oakley on the fourth play of the second half, into a 41-yard run by Williams that silenced the crowd and gave Texas Tech a 19-7 lead.

“Some things happened that absolutely can’t happen when you play a team like that,” Klieman said.

Johnson tried to answer with his second TD run for Kansas State, but Texas Tech's offense kept on going. Stone Harrington drilled another field goal and Caleb Douglas hauled in a short touchdown throw to make it 29-14 heading into the fourth quarter.

Texas Tech's defense took care of the rest.

After the Wildcats scored with 12:44 to go, the Red Raiders stopped the 2-point try to keep it a two-score game. Later in the quarter, they stuffed Johnson for a loss on fourth down near midfield. And when the Texas Tech offense fumbled the ball right back, the Red Raiders again stopped the Wildcats on fourth down with less than 6 minutes to go.

Texas Tech linebacker John Curry returned Johnson's fumble for a touchdown with 4:52 left to put the game away.

“I’m really, really proud of the way we handled adversity today," Morton said. “We got down and we fought back.”

Texas Tech hardly played a clean game — the turnovers hurt, as did some penalties. But with Morton back under center, the Red Raiders were able to overcome them against a team that was coming off an emotional win over rival Kansas.

Kansas State simply made too many mistakes, and not just the turnovers and penalties. Brown and Oakley dropped passes at key points in the game, the latter when the Wildcats turned it over on downs late in the fourth quarter.
