KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs will have newly acquired JuJu Smith-Schuster and Samaje Perine but not wide receiver Marquise Brown when they play the Ravens on Thursday night in an AFC title game rematch that opens the NFL season.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Friday that Smith-Schuster and Perine should be able to pick up enough of the playbook in time to help them out against Baltimore. Smith-Schuster was released by the Patriots last month and signed with the Chiefs on Monday, while Perine was released by the Broncos on Tuesday and was in Kansas City two days later.

“I've just got to see with Perine with where he's at in picking everything up,” Reid said. “I'm not going to put him in a bad position obviously, but I think he's going to be fine. He's been here cranking things up, so we'll see how it goes.”

Brown, one of the Chiefs' marquee free-agent acquisitions, dislocated the sternoclavicular joint in his shoulder after making a catch in their preseason opener against Jacksonville. He got the shoulder set without surgery, though, helping to speed up the 4-to-6 week timeline for recovery and giving him a chance to play in Week 1.

But despite appearing on the practice field this week, Brown did not take part in any real work, and Reid decided to give him more time to recover. The fact that Chiefs general manager Brett Veach opted against putting him on short-term injured reserve this week when the roster was trimmed means they still expect him back in the next couple of weeks.

“He's at the point where he can laugh without pain,” Veach said this week, putting a positive spin on Brown's recovery.

Smith-Schuster helps to provide some depth at the position.

The veteran wide receiver played for the Chiefs two years ago, catching 78 passes for 933 yards and three touchdowns. It ended with a trip to the Super Bowl, where Smith-Schuster caught seven passes for 53 yards in a 38-35 win over the Eagles.

He signed a three-year, $25 million contract with New England, despite a history of knee issues that had kept some other teams from showing interest. He finished with just 29 catches for 260 yards and 11 games with the Patriots.

“We welcomed JuJu back with open arms,” Reid said. “He's healthy and ready to go. His knee — he had the knee before, but we were able to manage that. We'll continue to manage it. He looks great right now. He jumped right back in and had some practice with us. It's just a matter of getting banged around a bit after not being in camp.”

Second-year pro Rashee Rice and first-round pick Xavier Worthy will lead the Chiefs' wide receiver corps while Brown is out, and veterans Justin Watson, Skyy Moore and Mecole Hardman will join Smith-Schuster in sharing backup opportunities.

Reid declined to say who would be active on Thursday or whether he preferred a smaller rotation of wide receivers.

Chiefs to be without Hollywood Brown when they open season at Baltimore

HOUSTON (AP) — Framber Valdez pitched seven no-hit innings and Jose Altuve hit a game-ending RBI double in the ninth to lift the Houston Astros to a 3-2 win over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

The game was tied at 2-all when Jake Meyers singled off James McArthur (5-6) with one out in the ninth. There were two outs when Altuve bounced his double off the wall in left field to send Meyers home and set off a wild celebration.

The Royals trailed 2-0 and had just one hit when Bobby Witt Jr. reached on an error by shortstop Jeremy Peña to start the ninth. With one out, Paul DeJong sent a slider from Josh Hader (7-7) into the Crawford Boxes in left field to tie it.

Valdez was pulled after throwing 98 pitches, 60 for strikes, with seven strikeouts, three walks and a hit batter.

Bryan Abreu took over to start the eighth and Michael Massey was retired on a fly ball before pinch-hitter MJ Melendez grounded out. Pinch-hitter Kyle Isbel then grounded a single to left field for the Royals' first hit.

The 30-year-old Valdez threw a no-hitter against Cleveland on Aug. 1, 2023. He nearly had a second one earlier this month before Corey Seager homered with two outs in the ninth inning of a 4-2 win over Texas on Aug. 6.

It was the second time this week the Astros took a no-hit bid into the eighth inning. Spencer Arrighetti allowed his first hit to start the eighth in a 10-0 win over the NL East-leading Phillies on Wednesday.

Valdez sailed through the first four innings but needed some help from his defense in the fifth. Freddy Fermin hit a sharp grounder to Peña, who fielded it and made a leaping throw that bounced to Victor Caratini at first just before Fermin’s foot hit the bag.

Valdez smiled and pointed at Peña after the play. Nick Loftin grounded out to end the inning.

Valdez hit Perez with a pitch with one out in the seventh before striking out DeJong. Fermin walked, prompting a visit from pitching coach Josh Miller. Valdez then struck out Loftin to end his night.

Ben Gamel led off Houston’s third with his first home run this season, a shot to center field.

Yainer Diaz singled with one out in the eighth before a double by Caratini. The Astros made it 2-0 when Diaz scored on a sacrifice fly by Peña.

Seth Lugo permitted six hits and a run with nine strikeouts in six innings.

Royals: 1B Vinnie Pasquantino will miss the rest of the regular season after breaking his right thumb while trying to make a play Thursday night. The injury will require surgery and the expected recovery time is 6-to-8 weeks, meaning Pasquantino could potentially return if the Royals make a playoff run. ... Reliever Lucas Erceg was injured on the same play when he tried to barehand a comebacker. His hand was bruised and swollen Friday but manager Matt Quatraro said the injury wasn’t serious.

Astros: 3B Alex Bregman was out of the lineup Friday with elbow soreness. ... RF Kyle Tucker (right shin bruise) took live batting practice Friday for the first time since fouling a ball off his leg June 3. Tucker said he’s feeling good and believes he can return soon. He added that he hopes not to go on a minor league rehabilitation assignment and instead prepare for his return by doing more live BP and possibly simulated games.

Houston LHP Yusei Kikuchi (6-9, 4.39 ERA) opposes LHP Cole Ragans (10-8, 3.28) when the series continues Saturday night.

The 5th ranked Barton Community College men's soccer team capitalized with a trio of second half goals in their home opener Friday morning in defeating Jefferson College 3-0 at the Cougar Soccer Complex.

Getting back on track, Barton improves to 3-1-0 on the young campaign while keeping Jefferson winless on the year at 0-1-1. The Cougars will get a day off before concluding the Barton Classic on Sunday with a 10:00 a.m. kickoff against Trinidad State. The Vikings will return to the Complex on Saturday, taking on Trinidad State in an 11:00 a.m. start against Trinidad State with the Lady Cougars hosting their home opener following against Highland Community College in a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.

Before the rains came, there was tennis to be played in Lyons. The Great Bend High School girls opened the 2024 season Thursday afternoon in Lyons. The Lady Panthers scored 48 points for the team title, followed by Pratt with 39 points, and Ashland with 26 points.

Paige Stacey posted a 3-0 record at No. 1 singles. She defeated Lyons and Chaparral 6-0, 6-1, respectively, in pool matches, then beat Pratt's Kate Jackson 6-3 in the finals.&nbsp;

Darcy Feist and Mac Lindberg also picked up the win at No. 1 doubles. The girls defeated Lyons and Chaparral 6-1 in pool play, then took down Ashland 6-2 in the first-place match.

Beth Hammeke and Mackenzie LaViolette also posted a 3-0 record at No. 2 doubles. The pair downed Chaparral 6-3, then defeated Lyons 6-2. In the championship match, the girls beat Pratt 6-3.

Clarise Snapp finished second at No. 2 singles. She defeated Chaparral 6-2 and Lyons 6-1 in pool matches but fell to Pratt's Sydney Riley 6-4 in the championship match.

The Lady Panthers travel to McPherson next Friday.

Football Home Opener Postponed to Friday at 1:30 PM

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Devin Neal ran for 112 yards and two touchdowns on eight first-half carries and No. 22 Kansas beat Lindenwood 48-3 on Thursday night in the opener for both teams.

Kansas outscored Lindenwood 27-0 in the second quarter at Children’s Mercy Park. Lindenwood, in its third year as an FCS program, played its first game against an FBS opponent.

Daniels, who played only in the first half for Kansas, was 9 of 15 for 148 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

“For the first game, it was about what I hoped for,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. “I thought Jalon (Daniels) played really well. I thought Devin and Daniel (Hishaw) ran the ball hard. I thought all our backs ran the ball hard.

"I thought the defense was solid. There are still some things with communication where we've got to be better. It was a good night, but there are some things as we step up and play a Big Ten opponent (Illinois) next, we've got to be better.”

The Jayhawks are playing home games in Kansas City — two at Children’s Mercy Park and four at Arrowhead Stadium — because of stadium renovations.

“I thought the atmosphere was great at the beginning of the game,” Leipold said. “There was energy. After a few of those big plays, in the second half it tapered down a little bit.”

Lindenwood averted a shutout with a 34-yard field goal by Logan Seibert with 6:12 left.

After forcing a three-and-out on Lindenwood's first series, Kansas marched 65 yards in nine plays for its first touchdown. Neal punched it in from the 5. Kansas had to convert a fourth-and-3 on the drive.

But that's all the offense Kansas could muster in the first quarter. Lindenwood ran 20 plays in the first quarter, compared to just 12 for Kansas, and the Lions held the ball for almost 10 minutes.

Turnovers hurt Kansas early in the first half. Quentin Skinner fumbled on Kansas' second drive. Daniels then threw an interception, ending the Jayhawks' third drive early in the second quarter.

Luke Grimm said he and Daniels read different coverages, but Daniels took the blame.

“Luke read the defense perfectly," Daniels said. "That play was on me. I have to give props to the DB for making that play.”

Neal gave the Jayhawks a 14-0 lead in the second quarter on a 1-yard scamper, capping a seven-play, 85-yard drive.

Mello Dotson put Kansas up 20-0 with an interception return. He stepped in front of a pass on the right sideline and raced 33 yards untouched. The extra point caromed off the upright.

“At the beginning of that play, the quarterback was staring down his receiver,” Dotson said. “He gave him a sign to run the out route. I saw the quarterback give him that sign and I knew the ball was coming my way.”

HOUSTON (AP) — Zach Dezenzo drew a go-ahead bases-loaded walk and the Houston Astros took advantage of two Kansas City errors in a four-run eighth inning to beat the Royals 6-3 on Thursday night.

With two runners on and Astros trailing 3-2, Yainer Diaz hit a grounder to pitcher Lucas Erceg (2-5), who tried to barehand the comebacker, bobbled it and rushed a throw that got away from first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino. José Altuve scored from second on the play to tie the score. Pasquantino’s glove hand appeared to collide with Diaz, and he exited the game with an apparent injury.

After reliever John Schreiber intentionally walked Ben Gamel to load the bases, Jeremy Peña grounded into a force out at home. Dezenzo then drew a walk to force in Diaz with the tiebreaking run. Mauricio Dubón followed with a single to left field to score Ben Gamel, and Peña also scored on a fielding error by left fielder MJ Melendez to make it 6-3.

“It’s been like that the whole year,” Dubón said. “We’ve been fighting. Dezenzo had an unreal at-bat and gave me a chance to make something happen.”

Ryan Pressly (1-3) pitched a scoreless eighth to earn the win after being activated from the 15-day injured list earlier in the day, and Josh Hader pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 29th save of the season.

“These guys like big moments like that,” Astros manager Joe Espada said. “That’s a huge win for us, right there.”

The Royals had taken the lead in the seventh after two errors by the Astros. With one out, Salvador Perez reached first on a fielding error by Peña. Paul DeJong, nearly grounded into a double play, but the throw to first was late. Melendez walked, and Maikel Garcia reached base after third baseman Shay Whitcomb bobbled a groundball, loading the bases. Kyle Isbel then followed with a three-run double down the left-field line off Bryan Abreu for the 3-2 lead.

“We took advantage of an error,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “That’s what you have to do -- when a good team makes a mistake, you have to take advantage of it. We made a mistake, and they took advantage of it. Same thing on the other side.”

Astros starter Hunter Brown — pitching on his 26th birthday — allowed two hits and no earned runs while striking out four and walking one in 6 2/3 innings.

Brown last faced the Royals on April 11, when he gave up nine runs on 11 hits in just two-thirds of an inning. He turned his season around after that start, posting an 11-5 record and a 2.98 ERA in 23 appearances since.

“I could not wait to pitch against these guys,” Brown said. “I got bounced in the first inning, and that was definitely still on my mind even though it was however many months ago. So, once I got through the first inning, that was awesome. I was very thankful. That was a birthday gift, in itself.”

Veteran outfielder Jason Heyward made a splash in his Astros debut. After being released by the Dodgers and signing with Houston earlier this week, Heyward had a two-run double down the right-field line off Royals starter Brady Singer in the bottom of the fifth inning to give Houston a 2-0 lead.

Singer allowed five hits and two runs while striking out six and walking one in six innings.

Astros third baseman Alex Bregman was ejected in the fourth inning after appearing to complain about a strike-three call from home plate umpire Alex Tosi.

“When Alex argues balls and strikes, 99% of the time, he’s right,” Espada said.

Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., who leads the American League in hits, batting average and runs, went 0 for 4 after hitting safely in 16 of his previous 17 games.

Royals: RF Hunter Renfroe (right hamstring strain) is “feeling better” and started running and doing a full workout on Wednesday, manager Matt Quatraro said.

Astros: RF Kyle Tucker (shin contusion) has “looked really good” in drills and sprinting exercises, and “we’re getting there,” Espada said before the game.

#18 Kansas State host UT-Martin to begin 2024 campaign

West Virginia and TCU are the only Big 12 teams that are opening the season against Power Four opponents. The Mountaineers are the only one taking on a ranked team, hosting eighth-ranked Penn State on Saturday. It's a rematch of last year's opener when Penn State won in the first meeting since 1992 between the schools only about 180 miles apart. TCU is going to ACC newcomer Stanford on Friday night. Of the 16 season openers in the Big 12, there are 11 against FCS teams. No. 21 Arizona, one of the Big 12’s four newcomers, carries a seven-game winning streak into the season. The Wildcats host New Mexico.

Things to watch this week in the Big 12 Conference:

No. 8 Penn State at West Virginia, Saturday, noon ET (Fox)

The Mountaineers, coming off a surprising 9-4 record last year after being picked to finish last in the Big 12, are the league's only team opening against a ranked Power Four team. West Virginia has lost its past three openers, including 38-15 at Penn State last year in the first meeting since 1992 between the schools that are only about 180 miles apart. The Nittany Lions have won 35 of the last 38 meetings since the mid-1950s.

West Virginia returns its top three rushers with running backs sophomore Jaheim White (842 yards and four TDs) and junior CJ Donaldson (798 yards and 11 TDs), and dual-threat senior quarterback Garrett Greene (772 yards rushing and 13 TDs). The Mountaineers' 229 yards rushing per game were the most for a major conference team. Penn State was the nation's top rushing defense allowing only 75.5 yards per game.

TCU is the only other Big 12 team opening against a major conference opponent, Friday at Stanford, in the Cardinal's first game as an ACC member after the dismemberment of the Pac-12. TCU went 5-7 last year. Josh Hoover is the TCU starting quarterback after averaging 339 yards passing the final six games as a redshirt freshman last year.

Colorado won at TCU last year in coach Deion Sanders' first game with the Buffaloes while still in the Pac-12, but are now back in the Big 12 after 13 seasons away. They open Thursday night at home against FCS powerhouse North Dakota State. The Buffs ended last season with a six-game losing streak, and eight losses in nine games after a 3-0 start.

Nick Martin and Collin Oliver are returning starting linebackers for No. 17 Oklahoma State. Martin's 140 tackles last season in his first as a starter were the most by a Cowboys player since 1984, and the most by a Big 12 player since 2018. Oliver, a defensive end his first two seasons in Stillwater, had 45 tackles, 15 1/2 tackles for loss, and four forced fumbles last season. The Cowboys host FCS national champion South Dakota State on Saturday.

Avery Johnson was recruited to be the starting quarterback at Kansas State, and one of the nation's top dual-threats did nothing to dissuade Wildcats coach Chris Klieman from turning the team over to him after last season.

Just look at what Johnson did in limited opportunities as a freshman.

On the road against Texas Tech, he replaced Will Howard and went 8 of 9 for 77 yards while running 13 times for 90 yards and five touchdowns. Against Houston, he was 5 of 6 for 46 yards and another score. And when Howard decided to transfer to Ohio State, Johnson accounted for three TDs while leading the Wildcats to a win in the Pop-Tarts Bowl.

Now, it is up to Johnson to help the No. 18 Wildcats reach some lofty expectations beginning Saturday night, when Tennessee-Martin arrives at Bill Snyder Family Stadium for the season-opener for both teams.

“It's a different feeling for sure,” Johnson said, “but I think mentally it doesn't change anything. Prepare like you're the starter. Nothing changes. It's just that whenever the offense takes the field for the first time, I'm going to be out there.”

He will have plenty of talent surrounding him.

While the Wildcats had to rebuild an offensive line that lost multiple starters to the NFL, they also return wide receivers Jayce Brown, Keagan Johnson, Tre Spivey and Jadon Jackson. In the backfield is D.J. Giddens, who ran for 1,226 yards and 10 scores last season, and he'll be splitting reps this time with dynamic Colorado transfer Dylan Edwards.

Throw in a veteran defense and it's easy to see why the Wildcats were picked to challenge Utah and Oklahoma State for the Big 12 title this season, and why some think they could make a run to the College Football Playoff.

“Yeah, there's excitement. There's really good momentum from the end of the season, and excitement of maybe expectations,” Klieman said, “but forget about expectations, man. Just go about your business daily, and stack day after day after day. Don't talk about championships, don't talk about what we can be. Talk about what we can be today.”

The Skyhawks may play at the FCS level, but they are accustomed to winning. They are coming off three consecutive conference titles, including the inaugural Big South-OVC championship last season. Jason Simpson is beginning his 19th season in charge, so they have some continuity, and safety Oshae Baker is one of the best defensive players in the nation.

“It’s been a grind. It’s been three weeks of camp. I’m really pleased with these guys,” Simpson said. “They’ve done a good job. Had some guys dinged up but that’s part of it as you prepare.”

Kansas State has not always rolled over FCS opponents. It beat Southeast Missouri State 45-0 last year, and South Dakota 34-0 the year before that. But the Wildcats also scuffled to a 31-23 victory over Southern Illinois in 2021 and a 27-24 win over South Dakota in 2018, the last season of Bill Snyder's second tenure as their coach.

The Wildcats lost one of the nation's most productive running backs in Deuce Vaughn two years ago, and Giddens — who was lightly recruited out of high school — filled the role with aplomb. But the powerful running back, who added 29 catches for 323 yards last season, should be much fresher this season with Edwards sharing the load. The speedster from Derby, Kansas, ran 76 times for 321 yards and a touchdown while catching 36 passes for 299 yards and four more scores for Colorado.

The Wildcats return eight starters from last season, including five of their top six tacklers. That includes linebacker Austin Moore and safety Marques Sigle, who had 63 tackles apiece. Both have been voted team captains for this season.

The Wildcats lost offensive coordinator Collin Klein, who was a Heisman Trophy finalist at quarterback for them, to the same job at Texas A&amp;M. They replaced him by promoting offensive line coach Conor Riley to co-offensive coordinator and bringing aboard Matt Wells, who went 57-51 as the head coach at Utah State and Texas Tech.

Avery Johnson takes reins of No. 18 Kansas State

The Kansas City Chiefs have ruled the AFC West since two-time MVP
Patrick Mahomes was still slinging it at Texas Tech. They've won the
division every year since 2016.


What the back-to-back Super Bowl champs are really out to accomplish
this season, though, is something that's never been done before: a
three-peat that has eluded the other seven repeat champs, including
the Pittsburgh Steelers twice.


As tight end Travis Kelce celebrated the Chiefs' 25-22 win over San
Francisco in Las Vegas at the last Super Bowl, his thoughts were
already on the next one, in New Orleans on Feb. 9, 2025.


“How about that?” Kelce hollered. “We get a chance to do it
three times in a row.”


None of the other back-to-back Super Bowl champs even made it back to
the big game for a shot at a three-peat. Joe Montana and the 49ers
came closest, but lost to the New York Giants 15-13 on Matt Bahr’s
42-yard field goal as time expired in the NFC championship at
Candlestick Park following the 1990 season.


The NFL is the only major sports league in North America that hasn't
had a back-to-back-to-back champion. The feat was last accomplished
in the NBA by Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal with the Los Angeles
Lakers from 2000-02, shortly after the Yankees won three straight
World Series titles from 1998-2000. The last NHL team to do it was
the New York Islanders in the early 1980s.


In trying to break the Chiefs' stranglehold on the AFC West, the
Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders both brought in new quarterbacks
and the Los Angeles Chargers hired a new head coach.


Rookie Bo Nix will be the 14th different starter at quarterback in
Denver since Peyton Manning retired following a triumphant Super Bowl
50 — the last time the Broncos even reached the playoffs.


Journeyman Gardner Minshew won the Raiders' QB competition and Justin
Herbert has coach Jim Harbaugh calling the shots in Los Angeles. The
former 49ers head coach returned to the NFL after guiding Michigan to
the national title last season.


The Chiefs bring back largely the same cast led by Mahomes, Kelce,
coach Andy Reid and All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones, who signed
a five-year, $158.75 million contract in the offseason.


The Chiefs got even better in the offseason, upgrading their wide
receiver corps by signing free agents “Hollywood” Brown and Juju
Smith-Schuster and drafting Xavier Worthy in the first round.


In Smith-Schuster, the Chiefs are reuniting with a veteran pass
catcher who helped Kansas City beat the Eagles 38-35 in the Super
Bowl two years ago.


GM Brett Veach shored up the team's greatest remaining roster
weakness by signing Broncos castoff running back Samaje Perine
shortly after roster cuts Tuesday.


The Broncos also had an abundance of wide receivers and three whom
they let go — Tim Patrick (Lions), Brandon Johnson (Steelers) and
Jalen Virgil (Bills) — were snapped up to serve on other teams'
practice squads.


If the Chiefs needed any fresh fire for their quest, they got it this
summer from an unlikely source: Trey Taylor, the Jim Thorpe
Award-winning former Air Force safety and Raiders seventh-round draft
pick.


A Raiders fan attending the team’s training camp brought a Kermit
the Frog puppet complete with a Mahomes wig and jersey to practice. A
viral video showed Taylor laughing with the other players while
placing the puppet on his right hand and speaking in a voice that
sounded like both the genial green amphibian and the three-time Super
Bowl winning QB.


Las Vegas coach Antonio Pierce said the team addressed the rookie
clowning on Mahomes and declared, “It’s over with.”


“It'll get handled when it gets handled,” Mahomes said when asked
about the mockery by the Raiders rookie.


Mahomes has manhandled the Raiders, beating them 10 times in 12
tries. He's also 12-1 against Denver and 8-2 against the Raiders.


That's 30-5 against division opponents, the chief reason Kansas City
has owned the AFC West for so long.


Nix, the sixth quarterback selected in the top dozen picks in the NFL
draft in April, beat out career backup Jarrett Stidham and 2021
second overall pick Zach Wilson to win the Broncos' starting job.

The Kansas City Chiefs have ruled the AFC West since two-time MVP
Patrick Mahomes was still slinging it at Texas Tech. They've won the
division every year since 2016.
What the back-to-back Super Bowl champs are really out to accomplish
this season, though, is something that's never been done before: a
three-peat that has eluded the other seven repeat champs, including
the Pittsburgh Steelers twice.
As tight end Travis Kelce celebrated the Chiefs' 25-22 win over San
Francisco in Las Vegas at the last Super Bowl, his thoughts were
already on the next one, in New Orleans on Feb. 9, 2025.
“How about that?” Kelce hollered. “We get a chance to do it
three times in a row.”
None of the other back-to-back Super Bowl champs even made it back to
the big game for a shot at a three-peat. Joe Montana and the 49ers
came closest, but lost to the New York Giants 15-13 on Matt Bahr’s
42-yard field goal as time expired in the NFC championship at
Candlestick Park following the 1990 season.
The NFL is the only major sports league in North America that hasn't
had a back-to-back-to-back champion. The feat was last accomplished
in the NBA by Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal with the Los Angeles
Lakers from 2000-02, shortly after the Yankees won three straight
World Series titles from 1998-2000. The last NHL team to do it was
the New York Islanders in the early 1980s.
In trying to break the Chiefs' stranglehold on the AFC West, the
Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders both brought in new quarterbacks
and the Los Angeles Chargers hired a new head coach.
Rookie Bo Nix will be the 14th different starter at quarterback in
Denver since Peyton Manning retired following a triumphant Super Bowl
50 — the last time the Broncos even reached the playoffs.
Journeyman Gardner Minshew won the Raiders' QB competition and Justin
Herbert has coach Jim Harbaugh calling the shots in Los Angeles. The
former 49ers head coach returned to the NFL after guiding Michigan to
the national title last season.

When the Broncos open at Seattle on Sept. 8, he'll become the first
rookie quarterback to start a season for Denver since Hall of Famer
John Elway in 1983.
Elway's debut was forgettable: He went 1 for 8 for 14 yards with an
interception and four sacks before being replaced by former starter
Steve DeBerg, who rallied the Broncos past the Pittsburgh Steelers

Jim Harbaugh was quick to praise Justin Herbert for quickly picking
up the new offense, but the Chargers' fifth-year quarterback's
acclimation was dealt a setback with yet another injury this summer.
This time, it was to the plantar fascia in his right foot that had
him in a walking boot for two weeks.
Over the past two seasons, Herbert has had bruised ribs, a torn
labrum to his non-throwing shoulder and two broken fingers, including
one on his throwing hand that caused him to miss the final four games
last season.
Harbaugh had some more praise for Herbert when the QB was among a
dozen Chargers players who got stuck in an elevator for two hours at
the team hotel the night before a preseason game at Dallas. Harbaugh
said he saw the players as they were rescued and Herbert hadn't even
