KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — If anybody should know how to stop Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, it should probably be the Los Angeles Chargers and the rest of the AFC West, who get two cracks at beating the Kansas City Chiefs every season.

Mahomes threw for 424 yards and four touchdowns, Kelce caught 12 passes for 179 yards and a score, and the Chiefs beat the Chargers 31-17 on Sunday to seize command of a division they have won seven straight years. Mahomes also improved to 29-3 against teams from the AFC West, which Kansas City already leads by three games just seven weeks into the season.

“I think both Kelce and Pat, when they're on the same page, that's a challenge for any defense,” said Chiefs coach Andy Reid, whose team became the first Super Bowl champion to lose its season opener and then rip off six straight wins.

“I know they work on it. This isn't, like, a secret,” Reid continued. “It's quite a tribute for those two executing the way they do."

Marquez Valdes-Scantling added three catches for 84 yards and a touchdown, and Rashee Rice and Isiah Pacheco also caught TD passes for the Chiefs (6-1), who have won four straight against the Chargers dating to their 2021 overtime thriller.

It wasn't easy Sunday. The Chiefs were leading 24-17 midway through the fourth quarter when Mecole Hardman, who returned to Kansas City just this week in a trade with the New York Jets, brought back a punt 50 yards. That gave them a short field and, six plays later, Mahomes hit Pacheco out of the backfield for the touchdown that put the game away.

“We just didn't get any rhythm in the second half,” said Chargers coach Brandon Staley, whose team was shut out over the final 30 minutes. “In the first half I thought we were aggressive. In the second half, we kept stalling out.”

The Chargers' Justin Herbert, who was sacked five times by the league's No. 2 scoring defense, had 259 yards passing with a touchdown and two picks. Joshua Palmer caught five passes for 133 yards and Joshua Kelley ran for 75 yards and a score.

“They're a good defense,” Herbert said. “We did our best to move the ball. We just didn't execute enough.”

The Chiefs had been relying all season on their defense to bail out an offense that had struggled to hit its stride.

Mahomes and Co. finally found it in the first half.

After an opening drive that netted a field goal, the reigning league MVP capped three of the next four with TD passes. The first was a 46-yard strike to Valdes-Scantling, the second to Rice, and the final one — almost fittingly — a flip from the 1-yard line to Kelce, who bulldozed through a group of defenders and into the end zone with 15 seconds left in the first half.

That prompted big cheers from the home crowd, including pop superstar Taylor Swift, who again watched from a luxury suite and celebrated with a personalized handshake with Brittany Mahomes, the quarterback's wife.

Mahomes had 321 yards passing by that point, the fourth time in his career he had been over 300 before halftime. And Kelce had nine catches for 143 yards and a score, the second week in a row he'd been over 100 by the break.

“The main thing with Travis," Mahomes explained, “is the way he's able to recognize coverage and adjust on the fly. We always talk about it, but you can't take it for granted. He can read the coverages, stop in the windows and be on the same page as me."

Yet their big half only left the Chiefs leading 24-17, because the Chargers were getting some big plays of their own.

After they evened the score with a field goal of their own, Kelley got loose for a 49-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter. And after Herbert connected with Palmer for 60 yards down the middle of the field, the Los Angeles quarterback found tight end Gerald Everett in the end zone for a touchdown.

Given all the first-half offense, the second half was mostly a dud. Both teams put together long drives in the third quarter, and both of them ended up with turnovers, leaving the Chiefs clinging to their 24-17 lead heading into the fourth.

That's when they were able to put the game away.

Swift was seen wearing a friendship bracelet with “87” on it. His failed attempt to give her a bracelet during her Eras Tour led to the tight end's courtship of the pop star, beginning with an invitation to a game at Arrowhead Stadium. Swift took Kelce up on it and they have been seeing each other ever since.

Chiefs pass rusher Charles Omenihu, who was suspended six games for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, made his debut in a big way. He had a sack in the first half and tipped a pass that L'Jarius Sneed picked off in the second.

Chargers: RB Austin Ekeler limped off in the first half but returned to the game. ... Everett left in the second with a quad injury.

Chiefs: LB Nick Bolton dislocated his wrist tackling Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen in the fourth quarter.

Chargers: Play the Bears next Sunday night.

The Butler Grizzlies ended the Barton Lady Cougars 12- game winning streak Saturday, beating Barton 27-25, 25-19, 18-25, 19-25, 15-13 at the Kirkman Center.

Barton (23-4) 12-2) failed to clinch the Jayhawk regular season championship with the loss. The Lady Cougars lead Hutchinson by 2 1/2 games in the conference standings with two games left in the regular season. Hutch has three games left to play.

2A Sub-State @ Sterling No. 2 seed Ellinwood reach the championship match with wins over Sterling and Ell-Saline but could not get past No. 1 seed Inman in the championship. Inman (35-4) advanced to the 2A State Tournament with a three set victory over the Lady Eagles 25-27, 25-17, 25-17. Ellinwood ends the season with a record of 30-8.

1A DI Sub-State @ Kinsley The St. John Lady Tigers were the No. 1 seed at Kinsley but were bounced by No. 2 seed Spearville in the championship match. The Royal Lancers prevailed in a three set match winning 25-17, 17-25, 25-20. Spearville (29-8) moves on to state while St. John ends their season at 29-8. Macksville (18-17) and Kinsley (11-23) both lost their quarterfinal matches.

Area Volleyball teams come up short at Sub-State

TOPEKA, Kan. – Fort Hays State improved to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the MIAA with a 31-28 win over Washburn on Saturday (Oct. 21) at Yager Stadium. The Tigers held off a late rally by the Ichabods after leading by 17 with just over six minutes to go. Washburn fell to 1-7 overall and 0-7 in the MIAA.

The Tigers saw the Ichabods rally back within striking distance in both halves. FHSU took a 14-0 lead through one quarter of play only to be outscored 14-3 in the second quarter, holding a narrow 17-14 lead at halftime.

The Tigers dominated time of possession in the third quarter and scored a pair of touchdowns to extend their lead out to 31-14. But a blocked field goal with just under seven minutes remaining in the game sparked a second run by the Ichabods. Washburn landed a couple of big plays on offense to score two touchdowns in a span of less than four minutes, getting back within three points of FHSU with 2:35 to play. The Tigers converted a key 3rd-and-4 with 1:40 to play as Jack Dawson connected with Cale Cormaney for a nine-yard pass to put the game away.

The Tigers outgained the Ichabods by 207 total yards (487-280), but still had to hold on in the end despite running 24 more offensive plays in the game. They possessed the ball nearly 13 more minutes than the Ichabods. FHSU was good on the ground for the fourth straight week, finishing with 196 rushing yards. Shane Watts led the way with 144 yards and two rushing scores, both in the third quarter. Jack Dawson threw for 291 yards and two touchdowns, finding Jayden Horace and Colt Fuller for touchdowns through the air in the first quarter. Trevor Watts had a team-high 10 receptions for 81 yards, while Bryson Smith led in receiving yards with 87 on four catches.

John Johnson led the Tiger defense with seven tackles, while Myles Menges had both sacks in the game for FHSU. Sam Brandt had a pair of pass breakups.

Sam Van Dyne led Washburn on offense with 202 passing yards. Teondre Carter ran for a team-high 56 yards and two touchdowns. D.J. Bell had 82 receiving yards.

Tigers Hold on in Topeka

Entering Saturday's Class 5A sub-state volleyball tournament, the Lady Panther volleyball team needed one win to set a new school record for most wins in a season and two wins to meet the big goal of making it to state. The 2023 team moved into the record books with a 25-16, 25-21 win over Salina Central, but failed to meet the state goal with a 19-25, 25-16, 25-23 loss to Andover.

Needing to win in the third set against Andover, senior Sadie Spray put down a kill to give the Panthers a 7-5 edge. The gap peaked at 8-5 before Andover mounted a comeback to take an 11-10 lead, its first since a 2-1 score early in the set.

It was a battle from there with neither side leading by more than three points. The Lady Panthers fell behind 15-12 before points from Spray and junior Kara Feist helped even the score at 15. Great Bend regained the lead at 19-18 and kept the score level at 21-21. Andover got a point, then another on an ace off the net. A block gave the Trojans a match point at 24-21. The Lady Panthers got as close as 24-23 before Andover tallied the final point.

Andover dominated Hays in two sets and led 7-3 early in the first set against Great Bend. The Lady Panthers scored the next four points and got big play on both sides from junior Cassie Ellegood late in the set to take it 25-19.

Ellegood had an early stuff and kill, and freshman Kya Behr added a tip early in the second set as the Lady Panthers jumped out to an 8-4 advantage. Andover used its own big play at the net to pull ahead 11-10. Great Bend tied the score at 13 on a kill from Behr and big serve from Paige Thexton, but the Trojans pulled away from there to take the second set 25-16.

Great Bend entered the day at 30-4 as the No. 3 seed in the Class 5A West bracket. That meant a game against 13-19 Salina Central to open the day. The Mustangs jumped out to a 5-0 lead before a kill from Feist knotted the score at six and Great Bend took its first lead of the match on the next point. Senior Kenzie Premer and Spray halted a Central comeback late in the set with back-to-back kills, and the Lady Panthers rolled 25-16.

The Lady Panthers finish the season at 31-5 overall. All five losses came in matches that went three sets. The volleyball team will say goodbye to seniors Spray, Premer, Thexton, Davis, Macy Nachtigal, and Emilee Hall.

Lady Panther volleyball season ends with 31-5 record

For a fifth-straight October, Lake Barton was the site of a regional cross country meet Saturday. After hosting Class 5A and 2A meets for several years, the course hosted Class 5A and 3A schools this time. The top-ranked Great Bend girls dominated their race to qualify the team to state. The Hoisington boys did the same with a third-place finish in their race. A pair of individuals will also advance to state.

There was little drama in the girls' race as reigning 5A state champion Katelyn Rupe, a junior from Salina Central, reset her course record for the individual win in 17:21.18. Freshman teammate Kaylie Schultz won the silver in 18:02.05.

It was largely Lady Panthers after that. Senior Addy Nicholson claimed the bronze in 19:06.00, and junior Marissa Boone finished fifth in 19:23.16. Sophomore Sienna Smith ran sixth in 19:41.91, senior Morgan Beckwith placed fifth in 20:00.51, and senior Eliana Beckham won the final team points in 20:12.17 for eighth.&nbsp; Beckwith crossed with a smile on her face in a new personal best on the course.

"I'm a person that's always in the negative mindset but hides it," she said. "Today, one of the other runner's moms came up to me and pulled me away and prayed with me. She said amazing things, things I never took to mind. She said I would blow myself out of the park if I just forced myself to keep a positive attitude and that's exactly what I did."

Freshman Bella Long placed 14th for Great Bend in 21:04.27, and junior Kate Welcher ran 16th in 21:11.74.

Great Bend ran away with the team score with just 29 points. Salina South scored 79 points for second, and Hays beat Valley Center by eight points with 90 to secure the other qualifying spot.

Hoisington boys qualify in third Many athletes in the Class 3A races were seeing Lake Barton for the first time. That mattered little to the Holcomb boys, who scored 29 points to win the 3A race. Lakin scored 78 points for second, and Hoisington placed third by 29 spots with 95 points.

Holcomb sophomore Brody Deniston won the race by 20 seconds in 16:10.67. Junior Kamden Tarlton led Hoisington with a sixth-place finish in 17:16.26. Senior Eli Lewis ran 14th for the Cards in 18:14.92, and senior Michael Hipp finished 19th in 18:34.56. Two-time state medalist Janae Fugitt, a junior from Cimarron, won the girls' race by 24 seconds in 19:45.66. Both the Class 5A and the Class 3A State Cross Country Championships will be held at Rim Rock Farm near Lawrence next Saturday.

The Hoisington boys did the same with a third-place finish in their race. A pair of individuals will also advance to state.There was little drama in the girls' race as reigning 5A state champion Katelyn Rupe, a junior from Salina Central, reset her course record for the individual win in 17:21.18. Freshman teammate Kaylie Schultz won the silver in 18:02.05.It was largely Lady Panthers after that. Senior Addy Nicholson claimed the bronze in 19:06.00, and junior Marissa Boone finished fifth in 19:23.16. Barton Men 7, Garden City 0 Behind a balanced team effort, the 6th ranked Barton Community College men's soccer team captured the program's 12th Jayhawk Conference crown Saturday afternoon at the Cougar Soccer Complex pitching a 7-0 shutout over Garden City Community College.

The victory clinches the outright league title, improving to 8-1-2 in conference and 13-1-3 overall while the Broncbusters fall to 1-7-3 in league and 8-7-5 on the year.

Barton will have a quick turnaround hosting first year program Seward County Community College Monday afternoon to wrap up the regular season with kickoff slated for 1:00 p.m. from the Cougar Soccer Complex before opening postseason play next Saturday with a first-round home game.

Houston Astros pitcher Bryan Abreu was suspended for two games and
fined by Major League Baseball, which said he intentionally threw at
Adolis García of the Texas Rangers during Game 5 of the AL
Championship Series. MLB said all six umpires decided Abreu’s pitch
was intentional. MLB said it “took into account the dangerous
nature of the pitch and its potential impact on player safety.”
Abreu would start the suspension with Game 6 on Sunday unless he
appeals. García and Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. were fined,

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Will Howard threw three touchdown passes, including a 61-yarder to DJ Giddens, to help Kansas State beat TCU 41-3 on Saturday night.

The contest was a rematch from the Big 12 title game last season, which Kansas State won 31-28.

Howard went 10-for-16 passing for 154 yards with three touchdowns and 62 yards rushing. Howard started at quarterback for the Wildcats, but K-State quickly used both Howard and freshman Avery Johnson.

“We had really good first half, but we felt we left points out there,” Howard said. “It wasn’t perfect, but it was really good and we really built off it. The defense did a heck of a job, too.”

A week after a five-touchdown performance, Johnson earned his first career start by taking a jet-sweep for 4 yards on the opening play. Johnson finished with 73 yards rushing and threw for 90 yards and a touchdown, going 5-for-10 passing. Treshaun Ward was the recipient of Johnson’s first collegiate touchdown pass.

Giddens ran for 85 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown to make it 7-0, and his 61-yard catch-and-run gave the Wildcats a 21-3 lead going into the second quarter. Jayce Brown and Will Swanson had their first collegiate touchdown receptions.

The Wildcats had 587 total yards, the most allowed by TCU all season.

“Everyone was talking about the quarterbacks, but the defense stole the show.” K-State head coach Chris Klieman said. “That is a high-octane offense with a fast tempo. We had a great gameplan and our kids executed at a high level."

Josh Hoover went 23 for 43 for 187 yards with an interception for TCU in his second career start. The Horned Frogs were held to 300 yards, their lowest total this season.

Emani Bailey had 100 yards rush for had his fifth career 100-yard game. The Horned Frogs finished with 113 total rushing yards.

“They were good and we were really bad. It was just one of those nights, I don’t have a great explanation. We’ve got to do the best we can to get it fixed,” TCU head coach Sonny Dykes said. “…We just have to get better and we’re going to practice and get better. We’ve got four games and none will be easy.”

Griffin Kell put the Horned Frogs on the board with a 32-yard field goal in the first quarter.

Horned Frogs: TCU entered the game averaging 488 yards per contest through seven games. The unit struggled to generate much momentum, with just 122 yards in the first half. The Horned Frogs went 2 of 13 on third down and 0 of 4 on third-down situations of 9-plus yards. The defense got hit hard early and failed to stop the two-quarterback mix of Johnson and Howard. Bailey was the biggest bright spot for TCU for most of the game. The final drive was the best of the game for the Horned Frogs on a 16-play, 73-yard drive, which ended on the Kansas State two-yard line as time expired.

Wildcats: Kansas State was propelled by an extremely hot start with 21 points and 238 total yards, including 127 rushing yards in the first quarter alone. Giddens scored a 2-yard touchdown to end an eight-play, 75-yard drive on the opening possession for the Wildcats. K-State has produced points in six of seven opening drives this season, five of which have been for touchdowns.

Kansas State returned home to the friendly confines of Bill Snyder Family Stadium for the first time since hosting UCF for its Big 12 opener on September 23. The Wildcats are 4-0 at home this season. The Horned Frogs left the Lone Star State for just the second time this season. TCU only plays three regular season games outside of Texas in 2023.

TCU will take on Texas Tech in Lubbock on Nov. 2 after a week off. The Horned Frogs currently hold a four-game win streak over the Red Raiders.

The Coyotes have won the last five games against the Spires including a 39-13 victory last season in Leavenworth. KWU has outscored USM 277-30 in the five contests. The Coyotes have a 17-4 edge – 11-1 at home – since the 2001 season.

The Coyotes ran their winning streak to four with a 34-16 victory over Avila last Saturday in Kansas City, Missouri. They led 20-10 at halftime and outscored the Eagles 14-6 in the second half.

Freshman&nbsp;Byron McNair&nbsp;made his first collegiate start and played well completing 11 of 18 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown. The Coyotes totaled 250 yards rushing and were led by&nbsp;Tyler Boston&nbsp;with 119 yards and&nbsp;Nick Allsman&nbsp;with 80. Both scored a touchdown as did running back&nbsp;Mark Benjamin.&nbsp; Avila finished with 245 total yards but had a minus-one yard rushing on 22 attempts. KWU's allowing an averaging of 115.6 yards rushing per game.

 Coach&nbsp;Matt Myers&nbsp;said he would decide who will start at quarterback later in the week – McNair or&nbsp;Richard Lara. McNair came in for Lara in the second half of KWU's game against McPherson and has taken all the snaps since then.. KWU is the lone team in the Bissell Division with an overall winning record. Ottawa, Saint Mary and Tabor are next at 2-5.&nbsp;

The Spires lost to Ottawa 28-17 last Saturday in Leavenworth. It was their second consecutive loss and third in the last four games.. Saint Mary's games are typically entertaining with shootouts not uncommon. They defeated McPherson 36-32 and lost to Evangel 59-42. The Spires average 30.6 points but allow 40.3 points and 458 total yards that includes 265 rushing.&nbsp; Sophomore quarterback Erick Covington has thrown for 1,383 yards with 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 49 percent of his passes. Redshirt freshman Michael Gazzana is the top receiver with 36 receptions for 577 yards and six touchdowns. Davien Norman is next with 21 catches for 225 yards and three scores; Jartavious Martin has a team-best 396 yards rushing and four touchdowns.

Defensive back Jaxon Curtis has a team-high 55 tackles and shares the lead in interceptions with three along with Landon Beecham.

"(McNair's) athletic ability has shown through and also his decision making. When a play breaks down, he can make plays which has been super important. I think the guys have bought in an believe in his skill set. We believe in all of our quarterbacks but he's the one that's performing the best at the moment."I expect (Saint Mary) to challenge us on defense and come and play super hard. We can't just come out and do the coin flip and go home. We need to make sure we start hot. Their RPO game is something that we haven't really seen thus far. Coyotes look to top Spires on Homecoming

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chargers and the Chiefs have been predictably good on offense this season, at least statistically, which means in the complementary world of the NFL, the difference in their records probably resides on the opposite side of the ball.

The Chargers are 2-3 largely because they allow more yards than all but one team in the league.

The Chiefs are 5-1 thanks to a defense that allows fewer points than all but one.

“Yeah, that helps a ton, especially when you don't play your best ball,” said Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has been openly critical of his own play heading into Sunday's game between the AFC West rivals at Arrowhead Stadium.

“Our defense is holding it down for us right now, but let's take the pressure off them so they can play free and be even better.”

Imagine that: The Chiefs are tied for the best record in the NFL with an offense Mahomes thinks has yet to hit its stride.

Still, the Chiefs are second in yards passing, fourth in total offense and ninth in scoring the first six weeks of the season. And while those numbers were inflated by a blowout of the Bears, Kansas City's offense has nevertheless been impressive enough on a week-to-week basis to win every game since a season-opening loss to Detroit.

Part of the reason Mahomes is lamenting the offense has been its failure to reach the end zone. The Chiefs have piled up the yards between the 20s, taking advantage of short passes while opposing defenses continually take away the deep stuff, but their offense has been bogged down by turnovers and penalties when it reaches the red zone.

“You have to continue to push, continue to get better and better. That’s all you can do regardless,” Mahomes said. “We understand that it’s going to take the offense at some point to have to have the big game to win it.”

Might happen this week. The Chargers, despite some desultory lulls of their own, are a top-10 offense when it comes to passing, total offense and scoring, so the Chiefs might well need their offense to finally pop to win a shootout.

It should help their cause that the Chargers have among the worst defenses in the league.

“This is going to be a different week because it’s a shorter week,” said Chargers coach Brandon Staley, whose team is coming off a Monday night game while the Chiefs played the previous Thursday, giving them four more days to prepare.

“But in terms of the approach of how we attack a plan and what’s needed to be our best for Sunday, that has to stay the same,” Staley said. “What you have to focus on are the keys to winning. What ultimately is going to impact winning on Sunday? That’s where our full focus has to be right now. From now until kickoff, just focusing on the things that are going to help us win.”

The Chiefs should get even better on defense with the return of Charles Omenihu, who was suspended the first six games for violating the NFL’s personal-conduct policy. The former 49ers pass rusher, who signed a two-year, $16 million deal with Kansas City, is expected to be active against the Chargers despite having only a week to get back up to speed.

Kansas City brought back wide receiver Mecole Hardman this week in a swap of late-round draft picks with the Jets, who had signed him to a $4 million deal in the offseason. Hardman was part of both of the Chiefs’ recent Super Bowl-winning teams, but he barely got on the field in New York, which had made it clear in recent weeks that it was eager to move on.

The Chargers are tied for third in the league with 21 sacks, and all of them have come in their last four games. Morgan Fox has four straight games where he has taken down the quarterback, the longest streak of his career, and Khalil Mack has seven in the past two games alone, including a franchise-record six in a win over the Raiders.

“He is really healthy, and a healthy Khalil Mack is a productive Khalil Mack," said Staley, whose veteran pass rusher has sacked Mahomes twice over the years. “We’ve done an outstanding job against the run, which has earned him more opportunities to rush. I think he has capitalized on his matchups. When you can get into a rhythm, as a rusher, that’s as good as Khalil is, I think that you’re going to be consistent around the quarterback, which is what he has been.”

Justin Herbert has completed fewer than 60% of his passes in consecutive games for only the third time in his four-year career, going 22 of 37 for 227 yards with two touchdowns and a pick last week against Dallas. Yet he also has three 300-yard games in six starts against the Chiefs.

“They are kind of young, but they don’t play like it. They play like they’re veterans all around the board,” Herbert said. "They’re really well-coached. When you have a group like that together, it’s going to make for a really good defense.”

The Chiefs have won three straight against the Chargers, part of an era of AFC West dominance that has yielded seven straight division titles. One reason for that sustained success is that Chiefs coach Andy Reid spends time during training camp working specifically on division opponents, and that could give his team an advantage when game week arrives.

“I don’t know if most teams do that but I’m sure other teams do,” Reid said. “I think taking the time for the coaches and players when it’s not quite so chaotic as during the season, I think helps.”

suspended a low-level football program employee a day after
disclosing that it is under NCAA investigation for allegedly stealing
the play-calling signals used by its opponents. Athletic director

Stalions had been suspended with pay pending the conclusion of the
NCAA investigation. Stalions had not been previously identified by
the school but was named in an ESPN report alleging he is a key
figure in the probe.

this week about a number of things. Topics included his dust-up with

wanted to apologize to him for criticizing him on his podcast earlier
this year. Nevertheless, Jeudy defended his actions when he responded

encounter before the Broncos' loss at Kansas City last week.

NFL has fined Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams $50,000 for his
“directed verbal remarks” toward a concussion doctor during the
team’s Week 6 game against Cincinnati. That's according to a person
with knowledge of the fine. The person spoke to The Associated Press
on condition of anonymity and said Adams also “made inappropriate
physical conduct” with an unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant who
was preparing to evaluate Seahawks wide receiver Jake Bobo. It’s
the second incident in as many games between Adams and an
unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant. The consultant is an independent
physician assigned to each team’s sideline during games to assist
team doctors in evaluating, diagnosing and treating concussions.
