"It was one of those days. We got better today. It was a [classic] Coach Reid training camp practice today, I'll tell you that," said linebacker Willie Gay. "Tomorrow won't be any easier, but like I told the guys, as long as we continue to get better, it will make the games even easier."

"All in all, there was good work today. The guys challenged themselves," said Head Coach Andy Reid. "It was a little shorter today – it was an hour and 40 minute practice – but the guys worked. It was good to get them back in pads and working to challenge each other."

The next step for the players will be stacking those padded practices. The length of these practices will begin to gradually increase, too.

Chiefs Take it One Step at Time

Denver head coach Sean Payton expressed regret for some of his strong&nbsp;<a href="https://www.thescore.com/news/2682628">criticism</a>&nbsp;of the 2022 Broncos.

He also spread blame around for Russell Wilson's struggles and said the franchise was "embarrassed" during the 2022 campaign.

"I needed a little bit more filter. … Obviously, I needed a little bit more restraint, and I regret that," he said Friday.

Payton had also taken shots at the Jets, saying they could endure a similar season to the 2022 Broncos. The former New Orleans Saints head coach said he'll reach out to New York "at the right time," according to&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/JamesPalmerTV/status/1684991246832730112">NFL Network's James Palmer</a>.

The Great  Bend Bat Cats closed out their regular season on Thursday night losing to the Liberal Bee Jays at Al Burns Field 18-10. Great Bend split the two game series with Liberal, winning Wednesday night 6-3. The Bat Cats finished the regular season with a 27-10 mark and open up play in the NBC World Series on Friday, August 4th against Sandlot Tulsa at noon.&nbsp;

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has lofty expectations for his first season in the Mile High City.

The Broncos are coming off a 5-12 campaign - their third season with five or fewer wins since 2017 and sixth consecutive year with a losing record.

Payton brings a 152-89 record as a head coach and a Super Bowl XLIV ring from his time with the New Orleans Saints.

Atop Payton's to-do list is working with quarterback Russell Wilson, whom the team signed to a five-year, $245-million extension last offseason after trading for the former Seattle Seahawk.

The 34-year-old struggled in his first season with Denver, throwing just 16 touchdowns against 11 interceptions while being sacked a league-high 55 times. Wilson finished with a 4-11 record as a starter with career lows in touchdowns, passer rating, and completion percentage.

Much of that struggle has been attributed to former head coach Nathaniel Hackett. The Broncos let him go after just 15 games.

Lofty Expectations in Denver

Colorado is leaving the Pac-12, and the Big 12 is ready to welcome the Buffaloes back to the conference they left a dozen years ago.

Colorado’s board of regents voted 9-0 in a special remote meeting Thursday to approve the conference switch in 2024.

“The landscape of collegiate sports is ever-evolving, and the University of Colorado Boulder has determined the Big 12 is the best future fit for our athletic teams,” school President Todd Saliman said.

“After careful thought and consideration, it was determined that a switch in conference would give CU Boulder the stability, resources, and exposure necessary for long-term future success in a college athletics environment that is constantly evolving,” CU Chancellor Philip DiStefano said in a joint statement with Athletic Director Rick George.

“The Big 12’s national reach across three time zones as well as our shared creative vision for the future we feel makes it an excellent fit for CU Boulder, our students, faculty, and alumni,” DiStefano said, adding, “These decisions are never easy and we’ve valued our 12 years as proud members of the Pac-12 Conference. We look forward to achieving new goals while embarking on this exciting next era as members of the Big 12 Conference.”

While a very small percentage of the almost eight million participants in high school sports will eventually play professionally, the majority will use those skills, knowledge, values and other intangibles learned through these education-based programs to land career-defining jobs.

When it comes to hiring people to fill key decision-making jobs, companies look to individuals who participated in sports or performing arts in high school. Surveys have shown that more than 90 percent of CEOs of Fortune 500 companies played high school sports.

Clearly, human resource directors are drawn to individuals who were involved in high school activity programs because participation keeps students physically and mentally healthy, teach important relationship and leadership skills, encourage determination and completion of tasks, and provide opportunities for learning to work as a team.

The Drive Group, a national recruiting agency, says companies hire athletes because they achieve goals, are determined, put strategy into action, are team players, have never-give-up attitudes, perform under pressure, and are motivated and committed.

For more than 20 years, the NFHS has realized the importance of helping participants in high school activity programs further develop important leadership skills to become successful in their future careers.

On Saturday, the NFHS begins its annual National Student Leadership

Summit (NSLS) in Indianapolis. More than 150 high school sports and activities participants from 30 states as well as groups from Canada and Honduras will gather for three days to interact with each other and hear key messages from experts in mental health, perspective and inclusion, relationship building, communication and planning for the future. 

Dr. Tamika Pollins, director of diversity, equity, access and inclusion for the West Orange Public Schools in New Jersey, will speak to the students on perspective and inclusion, while Leslie Barnes, associate director of athletics for student-athlete development at Duke University, will address the attendees on being better communicators.

Other speakers include Deb Hult, co-founder of Core Trainings, who will speak on building relationships; and Omari Pearson, a former high school, college and professional athlete, who will share ideas on planning for the future.

Harvey Alston, who has delivered his “Be the Best” message to millions of people over the years, including at this conference many times, headlines the Closing General Session at 8:00 a.m. Eastern time on Monday, July 31. Baseball Congress World Series, powered by Evergy, kicks off at
Wichita State’s Eck Stadium on Thursday, August 3rd for the 89th
NBC World Series. Welcoming 16 teams from across the country for the
89th playing, the NBC World Series has been held in Wichita every
year since 1935.

The first six days
of the NBC World Series will be pool play, with four pools of four
teams. Three teams from each pool will advance to single elimination
play, which starts on Wednesday, August 9th.

The 2023 tournament
will kick off at noon on Thursday, August 3rd with a matchup between
Arlington, TX Baptist and Metro Summer Collegiate League, followed by
the SC Blues vs. Lonestar Baseball Club at 3:00pm, and then the
Liberal Bee Jays and Seattle Studs in the 6:00pm feature game. The

Teams and Pool Play schedule for NBC World Series announced

Forty-three percent of student-athletes from Barton Community College achieved a 3.60 or better during the 2022-23 academic year.

Accumulating a Department wide 3.23 GPA, Barton had 106 student-athletes awarded All-Academic honors announced by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

Barton student-athletes were among 10,267 across the NJCAA earning a spot on one of three All-Academic teams for the academic year.

Forty-two Cougars achieved a perfect 4.0 in the classroom, thirty-one of those meeting NJCAA requirements to join 2,702 nation-wide recipients earning 1st team NJCAA All-Academic distinction.

Falling into the 3.80-3.99 GPA category, Barton had thirty-eight in the range with thirty-three of those meeting national requirements for 2nd team NJCAA honors. An additional forty-six Cougars accumulated a GPA in the 3.60-3.79 range with forty-two of those receiving 3rd team national accolades.

The Department had seven teams within the nation's top ten rankings, women's swimming finishing as national runner-up for Barton's highest team standings as the women's basketball team was the next highest national placing in the third spot out of 110 teams.

Barton's volleyball squad claimed department bragging honors with a 3.79 combined GPA. Placing 6th out of 138 teams in the division, the Cougars' streak of three consecutive "Academic Team of the Year" honor ended but claimed their 4th straight AVCA Honor Roll distinction representing being in the top 20% of the NJCAA. The high level academic achievement is the 6th overall for the program and the 15th time receiving AVCA recognition in the classroom.

The squad's sixteen members each attained a 3.10 GPA or better, fourteen above the 3.60 mark including a Department leading eight perfect 4.0 earners and three on each of the 2nd and 3rd teams parameters.

Ana Couto of track and field program was earlier named the Women's Indoor Track and Field National Scholar Field Athlete of the Year as announced by the U.S. Track &amp; Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

A national pentathlon champion at the 2023 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, Couto was also outstanding throughout the semester in the classroom achieving a perfect 4.0 GPA.

The top six team GPA's within the department came from the women's side, basketball a close second behind volleyball at 3.74 with the golf team third at 3.60.

Men's tennis led the male teams in the Department at 3.44 in placing 15th nationally with soccer next at 3.34 in placing 9th nationally.

Baseball led the number of individuals earning academic honors with nineteen, six on each of the 1st and 2nd team selections with another seven landing on the 3rd team.

Having three achieve perfect 4.0 honors, men's soccer had fifteen members over 3.60 from their 28-man roster.

 </figure>By TODD MOORE Barton Sports InfoForty-three percent of student-athletes from Barton Community College achieved a 3.60 or better during the 2022-23 academic year.Accumulating a Department wide 3.23 GPA, Barton had 106 student-athletes awarded All-Academic honors announced by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).Barton student-athletes were among 10,267 across the NJCAA earning a spot on one of three All-Academic teams for the academic year.Forty-two Cougars achieved a perfect 4.0 in the classroom, thirty-one of those meeting NJCAA requirements to join 2,702 nation-wide recipients earning 1st team NJCAA All-Academic distinction.Falling into the 3.80-3.99 GPA category, Barton had thirty-eight in the range with thirty-three of those meeting national requirements for 2nd team NJCAA honors. An additional forty-six Cougars accumulated a GPA in the 3.60-3.79 range with forty-two of those receiving 3rd team national accolades.The Department had seven teams within the nation's top ten rankings, women's swimming finishing as national runner-up for Barton's highest team standings as the women's basketball team was the next highest national placing in the third spot out of 110 teams.Barton's volleyball squad claimed department bragging honors with a 3.79 combined GPA. 106 Barton Athletes garner NJCAA All-Academic Awards

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Judging by the vibe at Wednesday’s “ramp-up” workout, the Denver Broncos are in for a much tougher training camp under new head coach Sean Payton than the infamous “Camp Cupcake” they took part in under Nathaniel Hackett a year ago.

“We all saw it in the intensity and the sense of urgency from OTAs and minicamp and it just carried over into the practice that we just had,” wide receiver Courtland Sutton said. "... I was just talking to one of the guys in the weight room about how we do anything is how we do everything.”

Players appear to have steeled themselves for a much more rigorous training camp and preseason slate than they had under Hackett, who was canned after just 11 months and four wins.

“You can see it with their weights and the workouts we did yesterday, I think they’re in good shape,” Payton said after the spirited 90-minute practice that officially kicked off his first training camp in Denver.

Payton instilled a culture in which the Broncos went about their business this offseason in relative isolation, keeping the coaching staff he assembled and big free agents he signed off the podium at a time when the Denver Nuggets were winning their first NBA championship and the Colorado Avalanche were coming off a title of their own.

“I thought the offseason went well,” Payton said. “It’s quiet, guys were working and I think that these guys, they want to improve and want to be seen in a different way.”

That salvo resonated with a team that hasn’t had a winning record since 2016.

“The message hits,” safety Justin Simmons said. “I just want to win.”

Payton inherited a team that hasn’t been to the playoffs in seven years.

The low point came last year when they went 5-12, a flop that began when they barely broke a sweat as Hackett ditched training camp staples such as 7-on-7 passing drills and 1-on-1 pass rushing drills and filled his schedule with jog-throughs, walk-throughs and “regeneration days,” then withheld most of his starters from preseason games.

It was all in the interest of player safety and preservation, but it backfired as the Broncos endured an injury epidemic and they stumbled under Hackett and quarterback Russell Wilson, who suffered through the worst season of his career after coming over from Seattle.

Upon his hiring, Payton clamped down on Wilson’s prolific posting on social media and ejected his personal quarterback coach from the team facility, where Hackett had given the quarterback his own private parking space and his own upstairs office next to the coaches.

Wilson showed up at camp in noticeably better shape than a year ago as he embarks on a comeback attempt that promises to play a major role in the Broncos’ fortunes in 2023.

Wilson recently worked out at Folsom Field at the University of Colorado where new Buffs head coach Deion Sanders looked on as Wilson flashed his stronger, leaner body along with his arm strength.

“Seeing Russ out there, you guys have seen him, he looks amazing,” Sutton said. “Just talking to him, where his headspace is and where he is trying to get to, it’s amazing seeing him in that light and knowing he has a chip on his shoulder because he knows that he didn’t put out what he wanted to put out last year.”

Another player on the comeback trail is running back Javonte Williams, who is 10 months removed from a season-ending knee injury. He avoided the PUP list and participated in drills Wednesday.

“Watching Javonte go down, it hurt me because that’s a guy who loves this game,” Sutton said. “To see him back out there and moving around the way that we know he can move around, it’s very encouraging and I’m looking forward to continue watching him make those strides.”

One player who wasn’t in attendance but on his teammates’ minds was second-year defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike, who was suspended for at least a year for gambling on NFL games last year.

“We’ve all made mistakes,” Simmons said. “And as unfortunate as it is, we’re all going to be there for him and support him. But we do have a job. It’s just like if someone gets hurt during the season, as unfortunate as that is, we do have a job. We still need to go out there and win games.”

Broncos camp has entirely different vibe from Nathaniel Hackett’s ‘Camp Cupcake’

If Colorado is ready to leave the Pac-12, the Big 12 is ready to welcome the Buffaloes back to the conference they left 12 years ago.

Big 12 presidents and chancellors voted unanimously Wednesday night to accept Colorado as a new member, clearing the way for the school to leave the Pac-12 and rejoin its former league, a person with knowledge of the meeting told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Big 12 was not making its expansion plans public. ESPN first reported the vote.

Colorado still needs to go through a formal process on its campus in Boulder and officially apply for membership. The university’s board of regents has a special meeting scheduled for Thursday afternoon with athletics operations on the agenda.

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark has spoken for months about his desire to expand the conference and add schools in the Mountain and Pacific time zones. A second person familiar with the Big 12’s expansion aspirations, also speaking on condition of anonymity, told AP the school and league have been in contact for more than a month about a potential departure from the Pac-12; the person said it was unclear if CU had come to a decision.

A Colorado departure could lead to more defections from the Pac-12, which has seemed vulnerable to more poaching after losing USC and UCLA to the Big Ten and with negotiations for a new media rights contract dragging on. Current deals with ESPN and Fox expire after this school year.

The Los Angeles schools are in their last go-round as Pac-12 members this year and it could be Colorado’s, too. With contractual agreements running out, the Buffaloes would be positioned to rejoin the Big 12 in 2024; the league last year it came to an agreement with ESPN and Fox on a six-year extension worth more than $2 billion that runs through 2030-31.

Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff had said at football media days last week that the 10 remaining conference members were committed to staying together. Text messages to Kliavkoff and Colorado athletic director Rick George were not returned.

Colorado was an original member of the Big 12 in 1996, and joined the Pac-12 in 2011. The Buffaloes’ football team has had only one winning record over a full season since joining the Pac-12, and went 1-11 last year, leading to the hiring of former NFL star Deion Sanders.

The Big 12 has 14 members this year, but Texas and Oklahoma are leaving for the Southeastern Conference next year. CJ Abrams’ RBI single capped a four-run ninth inning and the
Washington Nationals rallied to beat the Colorado Rockies 5-4 on
Wednesday for a second straight day. A day after using a four-run
eighth to come back from a 5-2 deficit to beat the Rockies 6-5, Lane
Thomas and Jeimer Candelario opened the ninth with walks against
Daniel Bard (4-2) in the finale of the three-game series. Joey
Meneses, whose three-run homer was the difference in Tuesday night’s
win, singled to load the bases. Keibert Ruiz was out on an infield
fly, but Bard hit Dominic Smith with a pitch to walk in a run and
make it 4-2. Stone Garrett was out on a slow roller before Candelario
scored Washington’s third run. Luis Garcia was intentionally walked
and Ildemaro Vargas drew a four-pitch walk to tie the game. Matt Koch

NEW YORK (AP) —
Aaron Judge is back in New York and could return to the Yankees’
lineup Friday night at Baltimore. Sidelined since early June with a
toe injury, Judge played another simulated game Wednesday at the
team’s complex in Tampa, Florida. He returned to the Big Apple
after that, manager Aaron Boone said. Speaking at Yankee Stadium
after his team’s 3-1 victory over the Mets on Wednesday night,
Boone said he didn’t know yet if Judge would come off the injured
list Friday. Earlier in the day, the New York Post reported Judge is
expected to be activated Friday barring a late setback. Boone has
maintained the last-place Yankees are taking Judge’s status day by
day and he wouldn’t rule out anything, including a return this
weekend.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo.
(AP) — Judging by the vibe at Wednesday’s “ramp-up” workout,
the Denver Broncos are in for a much tougher training camp under new
head coach Sean Payton than the infamous “Camp Cupcake” they took
part in under Nathaniel Hackett a year ago. Players appear to have
steeled themselves for a much more rigorous training camp and
preseason slate than they had under Hackett, who was canned after
just 11 months and four wins. Payton instilled a culture in which the
Broncos went about their business this offseason in relative
isolation, keeping the coaching staff he assembled and big free
agents he signed off the podium at a time when the Denver Nuggets
were winning their first NBA championship and the Colorado Avalanche
were coming off a title of their own.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J.
(AP) — A person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press
that quarterback Aaron Rodgers took a pay cut and agreed to a new
two-year, $75 million guaranteed contract with the New York Jets. The
four-time NFL MVP had nearly $110 million in guaranteed money
remaining on his previous deal signed with Green Bay. But Rodgers is
taking less money with New York and reiterating his stay with the
Jets is likely to last beyond just this season. The person spoke to
the AP on the condition of anonymity because the team didn’t
announce the contract. NFL Network first reported the sides had
agreed to a new deal.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) —
Bryce Kirtz, Rod Heard II and Bryce Gallagher were supposed to
represent Northwestern at this year's Big Ten media days. Instead,
they were no-shows. Just 16 days after longtime coach Pat Fitzgerald
was fired amid a hazing scandal that has tarnished the Wildcats'
once-pristine reputation, interim coach David Braun answered
questions by himself about the expanding scandal. Braun couldn't say
much more than players because of pending litigation, which was the
why the players announced Tuesday they would not make the trip to
Indianapolis.

UNDATED (AP) — The
PGA Tour won't be supporting the proposal to roll back the golf ball.
That's from Commissioner Jay Monahan in a memo sent to players
Wednesday evening. Monahan says there is widespread belief this isn't
good for the game. The USGA and R&amp;A have proposed a modified
local rule that would reduce distance by 15 yards for the biggest
hitters. The rule would only apply to elite players. It also would
allow for two sets of rules. Monahan says he has notified the groups
the tour won't go along with this proposal. The feedback period ends
Aug. 15.

David Fry hit a two-run homer in the fourth and Steven Kwan had two RBIs. Cleveland moved to 51-51 and trails Minnesota by two games in the AL Central.

Cleveland starter Gavin Williams pitched four scoreless innings but was pulled after throwing 85 pitches. It was his first start since developing a blister on his middle finger Friday against Philadelphia. The rookie right-hander threw 31 pitches and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first.

Nick Sandlin (5-3) allowed a run in the fifth.

Kansas City starter Alec Marsh (0-5) allowed four runs in 2 2/3 innings. The rookie right-hander has lost each of his five major league starts. Marsh has allowed nine home runs in 23 innings.

MJ Melendez hit a solo homer in the ninth for Kansas City. Maikel Garcia had an RBI single in the fifth and Dairon Blanco drove in a run with an eighth-inning single. Kansas City loaded the bases with one out in the sixth but failed to score.

Cleveland has won three straight series for the first time since ending the 2022 season with five straight series wins.

Ramírez’s first-inning homer followed a walk to Andrés Giménez. Kwan had an RBI single in the second and drew a bases-loaded walk in the third.

Williams dodged trouble in the first. Center fielder Myles Straw made a leaping catch at the wall on a drive hit by Bobby Witt Jr. for the second out. Two singles and a walk followed. The inning ended when Freddy Fermin popped out to Giménez at second base.

Williams struck out five and allowed three hits. The Guardians are closely monitoring the workloads of Williams and rookies Tanner Bibee and Logan Allen. Shane Bieber, Triston McKenzie and Cal Quantrill are on Cleveland’s injured list.

The Guardians signed veteran left-hander Amir Garrett to a minor league contract. Garrett, 31, was released by Kansas City earlier this month after going 0-1 with a 3.33 ERA in 27 games. He pitched 24 1/3 innings, striking out 28 and walking 20.

Royals: RHP Brad Keller (shoulder impingement) is nearing the conclusion of a 30-day minor league rehab assignment that began June 28. He hasn’t pitched for Kansas City since May 15.

Royals: RHP Brady Singer (6-8, 5.55 ERA) is the scheduled starter Friday night at home against Minnesota.

Sixteen athletic teams within Barton Community College were recognized recently by the NJCAA in announcing its 2021-22 Academic Teams of the Year achievements.

Earning a cumulative 3.23 GPA across Barton's twenty-two athletic teams reporting to the NJCAA list, ten placed among their respective sport's Top-20 leaderboard as 1,078 NJCAA teams achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

The Department had seven teams within the nation's top ten rankings, women's swimming finishing as national runner-up with the women's basketball team the next highest placing in 3rd out of 110 teams.

Barton's volleyball claimed department bragging honors with a 3.79 combined GPA. Placing 6th out of 138 teams in the division, the Cougars' streak of three consecutive "Academic Team of the Year" honor ended but claimed their 4th straight AVCA Honor Roll distinction representing being in the top 20% of the NJCAA. The high level academic achievement is the 6th overall for the program and the 15th time receiving AVCA recognition in the classroom.

The top six teams within the department came from the women's side, basketball a close second behind volleyball at 3.74 with the golf team third at 3.60.

Amongst fellow KJCCC (Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference) members, four Barton teams were first in their respective sport: women's basketball, women's golf, and women's outfield track and field.

Sixteen Barton Athletic teams garner NJCAA academic honors

MANHATTAN, Kan. – With the fall seasons just right around the corner, K-State Athletics is opening its doors to fans on Saturday, August 12, with a multitude of events around the complex with an equipment sale, volleyball scrimmage, and autograph session with the football team.

The department equipment sale will be held on the Bramlage Coliseum concourse from 8 a.m., until 1 p.m. with a wide variety of items available, including team-issued gear, game-used football jerseys, shoes, t-shirts, sweatshirts, baseball equipment, among other items. Purchases can only be made by credit or debit card, checks will not be accepted, and no refunds or exchanges will be offered. Fans are asked to park in the west lot of the athletics complex and enter Bramlage Coliseum through the northwest entrance.
