The waters of Salina have been good to the Lady Panther swim team this season. In March, Great Bend opened the season in Salina with the 200-yard medley relay team punching its ticket to state. At Friday's meet, senior Emilee Hall swam state times in two events, and the 200 free relay team of Hall, Josephine Mazouch, Sydney Kruckenberg, and Meredith Mazouch also secured a spot at state.

The 200 free relay won its race by just more than two seconds in 1:50.60. Hays finished second in 1:52.68, just 0.02 seconds faster than the state qualifying time. Great Bend's team of Avah Holden, Madelynne Siefkes, Ellie Lutt, and Clarise Snapp placed eighth in 2:06.42.

Southeast of Saline's Ali Richardson blew out the field in the 100 fly with the win in 1:00.68. Hall claimed the silver in 1:06.74, beating the automatic state qualifying time by nearly a second. The 100 back was also loaded with McPherson's Danica Brunk taking the gold by better than two seconds in 59.53. Hall placed third in 1:06.65, less than half a second faster than the state qualifying time.

Josephine Mazouch swam another state consideration time in the 50 free, placing second in 27.28, more than a second off gold-medal pace. Meredith Mazouch finished sixth in 28.49, and Lutt swam 11th in 30.92. Josephine placed third in the 100 free in 1:00.39, another state consideration time and just 1.18 seconds from automatic qualification. Kruckenberg placed seventh in 1:04.05. Snapp swam a state consideration time in the 100 breast, placing second in 1:20.01 to miss automatic qualification by more than three seconds.&nbsp;

The 400 free relay team of Hall, Kruckenberg, Josephine Mazouch, and Braylee Carper placed second in 4:13.16, 12 seconds behind the winners from McPherson. Great Bend's time was just three-quarters of a second from state qualification. The squad of Holden, Lutt, Sidney Gilkison, and Shatarah Newton finished ninth in 4:59.27.

Kruckenberg swam fifth in the 200 free in 2:24.24 to miss the bronze by four seconds. Carper placed seventh in 2:26.64. Snapp finished seventh in the 200 IM in 2:52.65 to miss the bronze by 10 seconds. Ava Gregg finished ninth in 2:55.60.

Carper placed sixth in the 500 free in 6:42.94 to miss the bronze by 21 seconds. Lutt followed in 10th in 7:03.99, and Katelyn Mermis finished 11th in 7:05.70.

Hall, GBHS relay team qualify for state at Salina swim meet

The KU Relays at Rock Chalk Park on the outskirts of Lawrence once again drew many of the top high school track and field athletes from around the regional last Thursday through Saturday. For the first time in years, Great Bend High School was able to participate.

The distance medley relay team of Sienna Smith, Sadie Spray, Reese Bullard, and Addy Nicholson finished ninth overall Friday in 12:50.53, setting a new school record in the process. Blue Springs (Mo.) took the gold by 15 seconds in 12:11.68. Entering the weekend, no Kansas team had gone faster than 13:07.

Friday morning, senior Macy Nachtigal made the finals in the javelin competition with a final preliminary throw of 133-1. That throw proved to be her best for seventh place. Nachtigal retains her lead in Class 5A this season and is currently top-10 among all Kansas throwers.

"I was ranked 11th coming in here so that was my one goal (to make the finals),” she said. “To place seventh and PR, it’s cool.”

Also on Friday, senior Eliana Beckham cut more than two seconds off her 800m time to finish 21st in 2:21.45. Omaha's Stella Miner won the race by eight seconds in 2:06.68. Beckham currently ranks No. 8 in Class 5A.

On Saturday, the 4x800 team of Beckham, Smith, Bullard, and Nicholson ran six seconds off a season-best to place 18th in 9:56.98. Blue Springs won the race by nearly a second in 9:20.87. Great Bend is ranked No. 3 in Class 5A.

On the boys' side, freshman Cooper Ohnmacht finished 19th in the triple jump at 42-11.5. The winning mark came in at 47-1.75. With some big marks from 5A jumpers over the weekend, Ohnmacht's best mark of 44-5 is now the fourth-best in the classification.

Colton Cowser and Jordan Westburg hit back-to-back homers for
Baltimore while Cole Irvin shut down the Royals in a 5-0 victory for
the Orioles. Cowser and Westburg went deep off Kansas City starter
Seth Lugo, who had not allowed a home run since last September. Irvin
gave up just four hits and two walks while pitching into the seventh
inning. That earned Irvin his first win since June 10, 2022, when he
also beat the Royals. Lugo allowed four runs, nine hits and a walk in
5 1/3 innings. He had won his three previous starts.


ST. LOUIS (AP) — Owen Miller
broke a scoreless tie with a two-run single and Colin Rea tossed five
shutout innings to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 2-0 win over the
St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday. Sonny Gray stuck out 12 batters over 6
1/3 innings for the Cardinals, who have lost four in a row. Rea gave
up five hits over five-plus innings and left after walking Paul
Goldschmidt to begin the sixth. Miller, who was recalled from
Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday, hit a two-run single in the seventh
after Blake Perkins and Brice Turang singled with one out.


LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los
Angeles Dodgers slugger Shohei Ohtani has broken Hideki Matsui’s
record for the most homers hit by a Japanese-born player in Major
League Baseball. Ohtani crushed a two-run homer deep into the right
field bleachers off Adrian Houser of the New York Mets in the third
inning at Dodger Stadium. The homer was the 176th of Ohtani’s
six-plus seasons in the majors. That’s one more than Matsui, who
played the final 10 seasons of his 20-year pro career in North
America. The homer was Ohtani's fifth for the Dodgers, who signed the
two-time AL MVP to a $700 million contract last winter.


MILWAUKEE (AP) — Damian
Lillard couldn’t be stopped in the first half and couldn’t score
a point in the second. It all added up to one of the most unusual
dominant performances in recent playoff history. Lillard scored all
35 of his points before halftime in the Bucks’ 109-94 victory over
the Indiana Pacers on Sunday to open their Eastern Conference
first-round playoff series. Lillard set a Bucks record for points in
either half of a postseason game.


OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Shai
Gilgeous-Alexander scored 28 points, including the go-ahead basket in
the final minute, and the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder defeated
the New Orleans Pelicans 94-92 in Game 1 of their first-round Western
Conference playoff series. New Orleans’ CJ McCollum missed an
off-balance 3-pointer in the closing seconds and the Thunder held on
to win their first home playoff game since 2019. Jalen Williams
scored 19 points and Chet Holmgren added 15 points, 11 rebounds and
five blocks for the Thunder. Trey Murphy III scored 21 points and
McCollum added 20 for the Pelicans.


BOSTON (AP) — Jayson Tatum
notched his first career playoff triple-double with 23 points, 10
rebounds and 10 assists to lead the Boston Celtics past the Miami
Heat 114-94 to open their first-round playoff series. Derrick White
added 20 points and four assists for Boston, which finished with six
players in double-figures. Miami spoiled the Celtics’ NBA finals
dreams last season. But Boston fed off the energy of the TD Garden
crowd, knocking down 22 3-pointers and outscoring the Heat 31-14 in
the third quarter. The Celtics’ lead grew as high as 34 points in
the fourth. Bam Adebayo scored 24 points for the Miami, which played
without star Jimmy Butler following his right knee injury during the
play-in round.


TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) — Tyler
Reddick stole a victory at Talladega Superspeedway when front-runner
Michael McDowell, swerving up and down the track trying to block Brad
Keselowski, wound up crashing with the finish line in sight. It was a
typical Talladega finish — and set off a raucous celebration on pit
road with Reddick’s team owner, Basketball Hall of Famer Michael
Jordan. McDowell was the pole-sitter and in position to give Ford its
much-needed first victory of the year. But his topsy-turvy efforts to
block Keselowski — another Ford driver — wound up costing them
both. McDowell crashed, Keselowski had to check up and Reddick sped
by to win by 0.208 seconds.


HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP)
— Masters champion Scottie Scheffler is on the verge of another
victory. He just has to wait one day because of the rain. Scheffler
chipped in for eagle and was comfortably ahead in the RBC Heritage
when storms arrived. Heavy rain stopped play for 2 1/2 hours. By the
time play resumed, there was no way to finish. Scheffler was 20-under
par and leading by five shots. Wyndham Clark finished with a 65 and
posted 15 under. Patrick Cantlay and J.T. Poston also are at 15 under
but didn't finish the 18th hole. Scheffler has three holes left to
play.


THE WOODLANDS, Texas (AP) —
Nelly Korda etched her name in the LPGA Tour record books, winning
her record-tying fifth straight tournament with a two-stroke victory
in the Chevron Championship for her second major title. Korda joins
Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam as the only players to win five
consecutive LPGA events. Her previous major victory was in 2021 at
the Women’s PGA Championship. The top-ranked Korda shot a 3-under
69 in the final to outlast Maja Stark of Sweden, who birdied her
final two holes to shoot 69 and pull within one. Korda stayed
aggressive on the par-5 18th, easily clearing the lake in front of
the green and setting up an easy up-and-down birdie for a two-shot
victory.

Monday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

The 5th ranked Barton men's track and field team added a pair of new national qualifiers this past weekend competing at the Michael Johnson Invitational in Waco, Texas.

Both of the Cougars' new national entries came during Saturday's day of intermittent rain eventually forcing the cancellation of the meet's final shot put event.

Bryce Southerland added his entry alongside Jeramiah Martin in the 110m hurdles by clocking a 14.48 for 11th place with Martin four spots ahead in 7th overall at 14.30.

Trevon Hamer's first attempt of the outdoor triple jump landed in second of the current season's national bests sticking a 15.23m (49-11.75) to place 5th on the day with Kalil Murphy finishing in 9th place at 14.30m (46-11.00).

In addition to Hamer's placing, Adrian Nethersole also grabbed a 5th place finish in the 800m leading a trio of Cougar national qualifiers in the event at 1:53.84. Hamza Belkhalfi, who would also place 10th in the 1500m (3:54.63), took 9th at 1:54.88 as Corlando Chambers crossed in 14th at 1:56.63 and Jasiah Clapp in 23rd at 1:58.62. 

Joining Belkhafi with a 10th place finish on the day, Revon Williams wasn't able to better his nation's current top ten time but still clocked a 47.64 to better forty others in the 50-man field.

Already having the program's 3rd furthest discus throw, Christopher Young marked a shorter 58.28m (191-02) distance to win the event but freshman Ricardo Hayles flew into the program top ten chart with a 6th furthest mark of 56.87m (186-07) to finish 3rd in the 25-man field.

Next up for the Cougars is the KJCCC/Region VI Outdoor Championships held May 2-4 at Pratt's Track Complex with Nationals concluding the 2024 season May 16-18 in West Monroe, Louisiana.

 </figure>By TODD MOORE Barton Sports InfoThe 5th ranked Barton men's track and field team added a pair of new national qualifiers this past weekend competing at the Michael Johnson Invitational in Waco, Texas.Both of the Cougars' new national entries came during Saturday's day of intermittent rain eventually forcing the cancellation of the meet's final shot put event.Bryce Southerland added his entry alongside Jeramiah Martin in the 110m hurdles by clocking a 14.48 for 11th place with Martin four spots ahead in 7th overall at 14.30.Trevon Hamer's first attempt of the outdoor triple jump landed in second of the current season's national bests sticking a 15.23m (49-11.75) to place 5th on the day with Kalil Murphy finishing in 9th place at 14.30m (46-11.00).In addition to Hamer's placing, Adrian Nethersole also grabbed a 5th place finish in the 800m leading a trio of Cougar national qualifiers in the event at 1:53.84. Hamza Belkhalfi, who would also place 10th in the 1500m (3:54.63), took 9th at 1:54.88 as Corlando Chambers crossed in 14th at 1:56.63 and Jasiah Clapp in 23rd at 1:58.62. 5th ranked Barton Men's Track and Field adds pair of national qualifiers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Colton Cowser and Jordan Westburg hit back-to-back homers for Baltimore off Royals starter Seth Lugo, who had not allowed a home run since last September, and the Orioles went on to beat Kansas City 5-0 on Sunday.

Cole Irvin (1-1) scattered four hits and two walks in 6 2/3 innings for Baltimore. He stranded a runner on third in the first inning and another at second base in the fifth while earning his first win since beating the Royals on June 10, 2023.

Lugo (3-1) had pushed his streak of not allowing a homer to 41 1/3 innings before Cowser sent an 0-1 pitch soaring into the right-field fountains leading off the third. Westburg followed two pitches later with his drive into the left-field seats.

Cowser's splash came one day after he mistakenly threw Craig Kimbrell's 422nd save ball into the fountains while celebrating the Orioles' 9-7 win. The save had tied Kimbrell for seventh on the career list, so Cowser ran back to the field after the game and managed to fish the ball out of the water with the help of some stadium staff.

Lugo, who had allowed three runs in 25 2/3 innings, was dinged for four and nine hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings Sunday.

Ryan Mountcastle added an RBI double and Westburg walked with the bases loaded to make it 4-0 in the sixth. Ryan O'Hearn drove in a run with an infield single in the eighth to help Baltimore pull away.

The Royals tried to rally in the eighth, putting runners on the corners with one out. But Danny Coulombe froze Salvador Perez with a pitch on the inside corner, then he struck out Nelson Velázquez to end the inning.

Royals LHP Jake Brentz (hamstring) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha on Sunday. He last appeared in a game for Kansas City on April 29, 2022, before undergoing Tommy John surgery. Brentz hurt his hamstring during a spring training game in March and had been throwing in Arizona during the rehab.

The Orioles visit Los Angeles to face the Angels on Monday night with RHP Albert Suárez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) getting the start.

The Royals continue a seven-game homestand Monday night against Toronto with RHP Brady Singer (2-0, 1.54) on the mound.

For the second consecutive week Cedricka Williams rewrote the national discus record among six highlighted efforts within the 5th ranked Barton women's track and field team results at the Michael Johnson Invitational over the weekend in Waco, Texas.

Williams continued her freshman progression tacking on eight additional inches to her program and national best ever mark, winning Friday's event with a throw of 57.80m (189-07). The mark improvement climbs to within two inches of her personal best after setting the Jamaican U20 record (57.84m, 189-9) at last year's ISSA High School Championships.

Also making a program impact on Friday, Sanae Hassnaoui moved up from 3rd to 2nd all-time on the 1500m list on a runner-up finish of 4:23.82 to just miss the top clocking by .31 seconds set by Mardrea Hyman in the 1992 season. A day later Hassnaoui led the pair of Cougar freshman national qualifying entries in the 800m with a 9th place finish at 2:14.53 with Shone Walters coming in 14th at 2:17.20.

In the 200m sprint both of the Cougars' entries clocked personal bests, Keliza Smith's 6th place overall finish in the 75-competitor field improved her national qualifying time to 23.73 while fellow freshman Ashley Shaw progressed to personal best 24.45 to place 25th overall.

Jazmine Williamson's 15th placing in the long jump on a season best 5.80m (19-00.50) mark led the Cougars' jumping crew on the weekend with fellow sophomore Kay-Lagay Clarke taking 19th in the triple jump at 11.16m (36-07.50)

Kialia Claiborne sped around the oval twice on the weekend, the first in Friday's 400m hurdles clocking a personal best 1:03.22 improving her national qualifying time before placing 35th in Saturday's 400m with a 59.23 clocking.

Williams breaks National record again, Barton Track results

For the third straight conference meet of the season, the 14th ranked Barton Community College women's golf team placed runner-up, the latest coming Saturday wrapping up play in the two-day KJCCC Meet #3 held at Emporia's Municipal Golf Course.

The Cougars trailed by just three after Friday's 29-over 313 round but despite a consistent 31-over 315 on Saturday slid further behind 8th ranked Dodge City Community College as the Conquistadors posted 310 and 302 cards finishing sixteen strokes better at a 44-over 612 total.

Finishing 2nd in the overall KJCCC standings, Barton now begins final preparation for post-season play with National tournament berths on the line beginning April 29th in the two-day Region VI/Plains District Championships held at Dodge City's Mariah Hills Golf Course.

Victorious at the previous conference meet, nationally 4th ranked Butpapaporn Sukterm finished just a shot behind in second place at 2-over 144. Carding a 2-over 73 opening round, Sukterm's even par 71 on Saturday was matched by Garden City's 42nd ranked Kanchana Kanchanaphilboo in holding on for the title at 1-over 143.

Valentina Leyva's twin 5-over 76 cards kept the nation's 56th ranked player steady in the 5th overall position at 10-over 155 as 51st ranked Andrea Peraza slid out of the top ten with 82 and 81 cards for a 21-over 163 accumulation.

One spot below on the leaderboard in 12th at 27-over 169 was Frida Mondragon, opening with a 82 before falling three spots with a closing 87.

Alayna Crosby finished in the 17th position at 46-over 188 following a 95 first day card in following with a two-stroke improvement of 93.

14th ranked Barton women's golf places second in third KJCCC meet

Following a doubleheader split on Thursday afternoon, the Barton Community College baseball team would settle for a second straight twin bill split on Saturday afternoon at Coffeyville Community College. Dropping an opening 11-0 fifth inning loss, the Cougars rallied back behind Jaron Cotton's go-ahead sixth inning grand slam in earning a 7-4 game two victory at Walter Johnson Park.

Finishing their non-conference four game series with a four-game split, the Cougars sit at 32-16 on the season while the Red Ravens see their record move to 21-26 overall.

Concluding non-conference play, Barton will open their second to last four-game Jayhawk West series on Thursday against conference leader and 17th ranked Hutchinson Community College. First pitch of Thursday's doubleheader is slated for 1:00 p.m. from Lawson-Biggs Field with the series concluding next Saturday at Hobart-Detter Field. 

Robby Bolin's leadoff single extending his hitting streak to 16-straight would be the first of three Barton hits produced in the opener. Owen Clyne's ensuing walk after Bolin caught stealing at second would be the first of four-left stranded.

Down 2-0 after an inning, back-to-back Owen Bailey, and Ayden Hadley singles with two-away in the second supplied the Cougars final hits.

Taking advantage of Barton's missed scoring opportunities in Thursday's series opener as well, Coffeyville capitalized in the bottom of the second with four straight defensive miscues igniting a six-run second digging the Cougars into a 9-0 hole and deficit unable to overcome.

Barton's final base runner came in the top of the third on Hunter Seier's two-out walk with the Cougars going down in order over the final two frames and Red Ravens tacking on three more runs over their final two at-bats.

Falling on the wrong side, starting pitcher Nathan Bowman (1-2) worked 1.1-innings, yielding eight runs with only two being earned on six hits and walking one.

Trailing 3-0 and stranding a pair over the opening three innings, Seier and Bailey back-to-back singles to open the top of the fourth created Barton's first run of the afternoon coming on Kyler Horsman's fielder's choice to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Stranding five through five innings, the Cougars loaded the bases with one-out following Horsman's single mixed between Grant Nottlemann and Barrett Donaldson walks. Faced with two-outs following a strikeout, Cotton distributed the timely hit launching his collegiate first grand slam and eighth home run of the season gifting Barton's it's first and lone lead needed on the afternoon.

Horsman's bases loaded RBI fielder's choice added an insurance run with the final Cougar run crossing on Nottlemann's one-out single scoring Seier's second single of the day making it 7-3.

Sending the tying run to the plate with no-outs following three-straight Red Raven walks in the ninth, Barton called upon Bradley Feezer. Making his first ever appearance out of the bullpen, Feezer closed the door in earning his first collegiate save. Needing just six pitches, the freshman limited Coffeyville to just a run on a sacrifice fly before drawing up a game ending double play in locking down the doubleheader split.

Ethan Minaker (4-1) notched his fourth victory of the season, as the freshman worked 5.0-innings scattering three hits, three runs with only one run earned, walking four and fanning two Red Ravens.

Jackson MacWilliams provided three shutout innings out of the bullpen allowing just one hit and one strikeout.

Cotton's game-two grand slam salvages doubleheader and series split

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Craig Kimbrel tied Billy Wagner for seventh on the career list with his 422nd save, Anthony Santander had the first three-double game of his major league career and the Baltimore Orioles rode a seven-run second inning to a 9-7 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday night.

Salvador Perez tied his career high with five RBIs for the Royals, who tried to overcome a 7-0 deficit, and hit a game-ending flyout to Colton Cowser in front of the left-field warning track.

Kimbrel pitched a perfect ninth for his fifth save in six chances this year as the Orioles evened the three-game series. He is two saves behind John Franco on the career list and three back of Kenley Jansen.

Baltimore at first didn't keep the ball for the final out.

“I guess the ball just got thrown into the stands,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “We've got to have a little more awareness in left field when you catch that, but he was great tonight.”

The ball was found at the bottom of one of the fountains in right field.

“Right when I threw it, I said: 'Craig has a lot of saves, that one might be important,” Cowser said. “We got the ball back, though, it was the only one in the fountains.”

Santander sprinted in to make a diving catch on Bobby Witt Jr's flare into short right field starting the ninth.

Corbin Burnes (3-0) pitched shutout ball until allowing Perez's three-run homer in the sixth, Perez's sixth home run this season. Burnes allowed four hits in 5 2/3 innings with four strikeouts and a walk.

“He's a veteran hitter and he'd got me both times we've played them,” Burnes said. “For the most part tonight we were able to limit the contact and get some quick outs. For the most part, it was a good job tonight."

Perez added a two-run single in a four-run seventh.

“It is relentless the guys take a lot of pride in their at-bats. Salvador Perez coming up with the home run to get us back in the game was huge,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said.

Cole Ragans (0-2) allowed seven runs and nine hits in 1 2/3 innings, Kansas City's shortest start this season.

“It was not good, just have to move on as soon as tonight," Ragans said. "I have a start in five days that I have to prepare for so I can’t let this one bother.”

Baltimore tied its season high with 15 hits, including eight with two strikes. Every Orioles starter had a hit.

Left fielder Austin Hays left after six innings because of calf tightness.

Ramón Urías hit an RBI double in the first and scored on James McCann's single, Adley Rutschman and Ryan Mouncastle hit run-scoring singles, Santander doubled in a run and Jordan Westburg had a a two-run single.

“That second inning was probably our best all season offensively,” Hyde said. “We faced a really good starter with a lot of success against us and I thought we just took what was given to us.”

Kansas City placed RHP Jordan Lyles on the inactive list as he deals with a personal matter and recalled LHP Anthony Veneziano from Triple-A Omaha.

Collin Morikawa was another shot back and Masters runner-up Ludvig Aberg was among those three behind. Scheffler is going for his fourth win in his last five tournaments. Sunday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

Coming off a record performance in its previous conference doubleheader, the Barton Community College softball team was back to racking up the hits and runs Friday in Goodland on 22-2 and 14-5 run-rule victories at Northwest Kansas Technical College.

The Cougars trailed 2-0 in the opener before a nine-run second inning followed by another seven lighting up the scoreboard in the ensuing frame highlighted 22 unanswered runs for the five inning victory.

Barton jumped out to a 4-0 lead to the third inning of game two, had the lead cut to one before answering with seven plate crossers in the fourth before tacking a clinching three more tallies in the fifth to pre-counter a Maverick two-run rally in their last at-bat.

Improving to 19-9 in conference play and 22-16 overall, Barton takes a break from the league grind on Monday in hosting Otero Junior College in a 2:00 p.m. twin bill. Northwest Kansas falls to 1-27 in KJCCC play and 1-43 on the season.

Connecting on thirteen hits in both ends of the doubleheader, ten hits came from the combined effort of Chloe Enslinger and Allyson McDougal. Enslinger also led the squad with three doubles in driving home 7 runs while McDougal's double and triple within her 5-of-8 afternoon raised her average to a team best .489 batting average.

Leslie Ramos pushed across six run in the opener including four crossing the dish on a second inning grand slam giving the Cougars the lead for good on her 4th round tripper of the season.

In the circle Elina Bartlett struck out five in three innings of work improving to 7-3 on the year with Aly Lawrence hurling the first three innings of game two moving to 5-3 on the year.

Cougar Softball picks up pair of Friday wins at Northwest Tech

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Vinnie Pasquantino and MJ Melendez homered to help the Kansas City Royals beat Baltimore 9-4 on Friday night and stop the Orioles’ four-game winning streak.

Adley Rutschman hit his first career grand slam for the Orioles, a seventh-inning homer off Will Smith.

Dean Kremer (0-2) retired his first 11 batters before Pasquantino drove a 1-1 splitter into the right-field bullpen for his fourth homer.

Pasquantino has four homers and 11 RBIs during an eight-game hitting streak.

“Vinnie did a great job getting us going with that homer,” Michael Massey said. “It felt like one of those nights where we had to scratch and claw, and it broke open late for us.”

Returning from the injured list in his season debut, Massey had two hits and two RBIs.

MJ Melendez sparked a five-run sixth with an RBI single that ended an 0-for-23 slide. Massey and Hunter Renfroe each had two-run hits for a 6-0 lead.

“We were able to find some good at-bats late when we needed to and have a big inning,” Melendez said.

Maikel Garcia stopped an 0-for-26 slide with a leadoff single in the seventh and Melendez hit a three-run homer off Dillon Tate.

“A sinker, middle of the plate,” said Melendez. “Didn’t miss it.”

Kansas City won its ninth straight home game, their longest home winning streak since May 27-June 15, 2016.

Marsh (3-0) escaped jams in the first and fourth innings, working around a pair of Rutschman singles. Marsh allowed three hits and two walks, striking out six in 5 2/3 scoreless innings.

“We made a couple of mistakes there in the first with the scoring opportunity, and then with the bases loaded off a guy we’ve had a tough time with,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “Just didn’t push any runs across.”

Kremer allowed three runs, two hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings. Three Baltimore relievers surrendered six runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings.

“Dean threw the ball great,” Hyde said. “A couple of walks in the sixth, but left with two outs in a 1-0 game. We’ve got to do a batter job of shutting the door for him. We just didn’t pitch great out of the pen.”

Baltimore stopped a five-game streak of hitting at least three home runs, falling one shy of the major league record set by the 1987 Orioles.

Massey was 2 for 4 after recovering from lower back tightness that had sidelined him since spring training. Kansas City optioned infielder Nick Loftin to Triple-A Omaha.

The football rules committee last month made a recommendation to allow — but not require — teams at the highest tier of Division I to use radio technology similar to what NFL teams use to call in plays. Only one player for each team will be permitted to be in communication with coaches while on the field.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers figured his football career had always been in such a rush that it was time to slow down. So he opted to return for the 2024 season instead of entering the draft. The Longhorns wrap spring practice this week looking forward to Ewers leading them into the season and their move into the Southeastern Conference. The NFL remains Ewers' dream but that can wait a year. Ewers says he wants to "enjoy being here and just being present and not looking too far forward.” The decision to stay also keeps Arch Manning waiting for his turn to take over the Texas offense.

(AP) — Arizona State and four former members of its football coaching staff have reached an agreement with the NCAA on penalties for impermissible in-person contact with recruits during the COVID-10 dead period. Two others are contesting portions of their respective cases via a written record hearing, according to a release by the NCAA. Under the penalties, Arizona State was hit with four years probation, a fine, an already-served self-imposed ban for the 2023 postseason and vacation of records for games in which ineligible student-athletes competed. The Sun Devils also will have a reduction in scholarships and recruiting restrictions.

THE WOODLANDS, Texas (AP) — Nelly Korda is one shot off the lead through 36 holes at the Chevron Championship as she seeks to tie an LPGA Tour record with her fifth straight win. Korda shot a 3-under 69 on Friday at the year's first major. She's at 7-under 137, trailing Atthaya Thitikul and Jin Hee Im by a shot. Korda made a double bogey on the first hole but followed that with six birdies and one bogey. The 25-year-old, top-ranked Korda is seeking her second major title after winning the Women's PGA Championship in 2021.

Barton Community College basketball players Mozae Downing-Rivers and Myles Thompson were selected as participants in the 2024 NJCAA Men's Basketball All-Star Game. Barton coach Jeremy Coombs was chosen as one of the coaches for the game.

The game will be played on Saturday, May 18 in Las Vegas, Nevada at Orleans Arena at 4 p.m. MDT.

The two Cougars are the lone representatives from the Jayhawk Conference.

Thompson averaged 14 points and seven rebounds in 37 appearances and 37 starts.&nbsp;Thompson had a breakout national tournament appearance, averaging 20.3 points and 8.3 rebounds. He scored 20 or more points in three of the four games in the tournament.&nbsp;He was selected as a first team all-conference selection, as well as on the all-tournament teams for the Region VI Tournament and the NJCAA National Tournament.

Downing-Rivers averaged 5.7 assists along with a 3.0 assist to turnover ratio this season. With over 400 assists, Mozae ranks third in Barton history in career assists. Downing-Rivers was selected as a second-team all-conference selection.

Coombs, in his third year at Barton, was named conference and national coach of the year. Coombs has won 77 games in this three years at Barton.
