Olympics on TV for Aug. 11

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Deion “ Coach Prime ” Sanders kicked off his second season at Colorado with a combative news conference Friday when he also celebrated his 57th birthday and became a grandfather.

Donning his signature shades and a Buffaloes baseball cap, Sanders started things off by thanking the person who left a card and several packages of fried pastries at the microphone.

“Trying to get my six-pack, I can't eat these honeybuns,” he cracked in what would be the lightest moment of his 30-minute news conference, which he would conclude by professing his love for “85% of you.”

Sanders didn't detail the source of his frustrations but there have been a couple of reports from outlets outside Colorado this offseason that painted his program in a less than positive light.

His testy exchanges highlighted the session at Colorado's annual fall sports media day, which is typically a day of positivity and hope.

Sanders said he feels great physically after enduring health challenges a year ago and also feels better about his team heading into Year 2 as the Buffaloes move back to the Big 12 following the dissolution of the Pac-12.

Sanders retooled his roster, particularly in the trenches, after going 4-8 in his first season in Boulder last year.

He grew testy, however, when asked about his bolstered offensive line that will protect his son, QB Shedeur Sanders, who was sacked 52 times in 2023.

“What does ‘bolstered’ mean?” Sanders interrupted, suggesting “improved” was a better term “because I don't know all that ‘bolstered’ stuff, I've never used that in a sentence. ... Let's say that. We improved our offensive line.”

So, in what ways could he try to accelerate the creation of the new offensive line's chemistry ahead of the Buffaloes' Aug. 29 opener against North Dakota State?

“What is chemistry?” retorted Sanders.

He shut down the next inquiry before it was even asked, from a CBS affiliate in Denver. He didn't go into details about his beef with the national network, but it's closely aligned with 247Sports, which this summer detailed a judicial judgment against son Shilo Sanders, a safety on the team, and his subsequent bankruptcy filing.

Sanders told the journalist it wasn't personal but he wouldn't allow him to ask anything. He similarly shut down another question as he verbally sparred with a Denver Post reporter he accused of always going after his program.

The reporter ultimately suggested they hammer out any disagreements in private. Sanders agreed but said he wouldn't entertain any football questions from him until they had that conversation.

“I have a question over here,” offered Shilo Sanders, grabbing the microphone as he awaited his own turn at the podium. “Since this is your birthday. Do you have any birthday plans?”

Sanders replied that his kids probably didn't get him anything, as usual.

His son then asked him about becoming a grandfather as his daughter Deiondra Sanders gave birth Friday to a boy.

“That's why I don't have time for this foolishness. That's how good God is, that God would choose me on my birthday for my daughter to have her first child," Sanders said. “The first time I'm a grandfather on my birthday.”

Sanders' sons followed him to microphone and were asked about becoming uncles.

“It's real exciting. My sister, I just got the text," Shedeur said before being interrupted by his older brother, Deion Sanders Jr., who was videoing the news conference and informed him that their sister didn't want them talking about it.

“Oh, well, I don't know what you're talking about,” he pivoted.

Shilo Sanders cut through the laughter and ignored Deion Jr.'s admonition.

“He's nice, he's healthy," Shilo said of his nephew. "I've seen him on FaceTime. So, I'm proud of her.”

“He just said don't say nothing,” Shedeur cautioned.

“We've got some media control over here," Shilo replied with a shrug. "All the brothers.”

Coach Prime holds combative news conference

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Willson Contreras hit a pair of two-run homers and the St. Louis Cardinals rallied to beat the Kansas City Royals 8-5 on Friday night.

Contreras opened the scoring in the first with a two-run shot off the top of the bullpen fence in right and added another two-run shot in the ninth, blasting his 15th homer 424 feet to left for his 15th multi-homer game.

“An absolute tank to left,” Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said. “Some really good at-bats and big swings by Contreras.”

Trailing 5-3 after five innings, the Cardinals scored five runs on seven hits against six relievers.

Will Smith (0-4) retired one of three batters faced in the eighth and, after a failed Kansas City challenge on a potential inning-ending double play grounder, St. Louis took a 6-5 lead on Victor Scott II’s two-out, two-run double.

“I was telling myself if he’s safe, it’s going to be definitely a critical situation in the ballgame,” Scott said. “Being able to come through right there is definitely special. There’s runners on base, so I’m just trying to do damage.”

Contreras, Alex Burleson and Brendan Donovan each had three of St. Louis’ 13 hits.

Matthew Liberatore (3-3) threw three hitless innings in relief of Miles Mikolas, who allowed five runs on eight hits in four innings.

“My goodness, look at what (Liberatore) did,” Marmol said. “36 pitches, three innings, didn’t give up anything at all. His stuff was sharp. He was pretty dominant. It was good to go to him early. (He) just shut them down.”

Mikolas has a 7.11 ERA over his past five starts. Ryan Hensley allowed a hit and a walk in finishing for his 37th save.

“I felt like we had a pretty good game plan going in,” Michael Massey said. “I felt like we did a pretty good job against him.”

Burleson lined his team-leading 20th home run to right leading off the third as the Cardinals built a 3-0 lead.

Kyle Isbel’s third-inning RBI triple snapped his 0-for-21 slide, plating the first run Mikolas surrendered to the Royals after 19 career scoreless frames. RBI singles by Massey and Salvador Perez tied it.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Domingo Germán is getting a second chance in the big leagues, a year after he flamed out with the New York Yankees because of behavioral issues. The Pittsburgh Pirates have selected the right-handed pitcher’s contract from Triple-A Indianapolis. Germán was 6-4 with a 5.29 ERA in 13 starts with the Indians this season. Last June, Germán tossed the 24th perfect game in major league history. Two months later, he was put on MLB’s restricted list following an incident in the Yankees clubhouse that reportedly involved a confrontation with manager Aaron Boone. It was another strike against The 32-year-old Dominican pitcher was suspended 81 games in 2019 by MLB for violating the league’s domestic violence policy during an incident involving his then-girlfriend, whom he later married.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — C.J. Stroud threw a touchdown pass to Tank Dell in his preseason debut to help the Houston Texans beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 20-12 on Friday night. Held out of the Hall of Fame game last week against Chicago, Stroud completed 2 of 4 passes for 41 yards. Following a three-and-out, Stroud led the Texans to the touchdown on a three-play series. Stroud threaded a pass to Dell, who dodged a pair of missed tackles for a 34-yard score. Justin Fields played three series for Pittsburgh, finishing 5 of 6 for 67 yards. He was sacked twice and fumbled two exchanges.

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A Southern California bookmaker who took thousands of sports bets from the former interpreter for baseball star Shohei Ohtani has pleaded guilty to running an illegal gambling business. Mathew Bowyer entered the plea in federal court in Santa Ana on Friday. He also pleaded guilty to money laundering and subscribing to a false tax return. He's due to be sentenced Feb. 7. Federal prosecutors contend that Bowyer ran an illegal gambling business for at least five years in Southern California and Las Vegas, and that he took wagers from more than 700 bettors, including Ohtani’s former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Beau Hossler shot a 10-under 60 on Friday in the rain-delayed Wyndham Championship, squandering a chance for a sub-60 round with pars on the last three holes at soft and vulnerable Sedgefield Country Club. Hossler had a two-stroke lead over Billy Horschel in the tournament that started a day late after heavy rain and wind from Tropical Storm Debby washed out play Thursday. Play also was delayed Friday, with Horschel among the 66 afternoon starters unable to finish the round because of darkness. He had two holes left. UNDATED (AP) — Plaintiffs’ attorneys in a federal antitrust lawsuit against the NCAA that is not part of a recent $2.78 billion settlement agreement filed a motion Friday asking a judge to deny preliminary approval of the deal. Attorneys in Fontenot v. the NCAA say the agreement to settle three antitrust lawsuits facing the association and five major conferences is settling for “just pennies on the dollar.” The NCAA, Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and Southeastern Conference agreed in May to pay billions in damages to former and current college athletes. A preliminary approval hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 5.

PARIS (AP) — Breanna Stewart scored 16 points and the U.S. women advanced to their eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal game with a 85-64 victory over Australia on Friday. The Americans, who extended their Olympic winning streak to 60 consecutive games, will face France on Sunday. The U.S. is trying to become the first team to win eight consecutive gold medals, breaking the tie with the American men’s program that won seven in a row from 1936-68. A win Sunday would give Diana Taurasi a record six gold medals.

PARIS (AP) — Algerian boxer Imane Khelif has won a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. She emerged victorious Friday from a tumultuous run at the Games where she endured intense scrutiny and online abuse over misconceptions about her womanhood. Khelif beat Yang Liu of China 5:0 in the women’s welterweight division, wrapping up the best series of fights of her boxing career. Cheering crowds have embraced Khelif in Paris, chanting her name, waving Algerian flags and roaring every time she's landed a punch. That's even as she's faced an extraordinary amount of scrutiny from those who questioned her sex or falsely claimed she was a man. She thanked her supporters and said her win was a dream for eight years.

SAINT-DENIS, France (AP) — Sha’Carri Richardson won her first Olympic gold medal, bringing the American women from behind in the anchor lap to capture the 4x100 relay. The U.S. men extended their drought to 20 years without a medal, disqualified for an illegal pass after Christian Coleman crashed into teammate Kenny Bednarek. Andre De Grasse put a bright mark on an otherwise disappointing Olympics by anchoring Canada to gold in a time of 37.50 seconds. Rai Benjamin won gold for the U.S. in the 400 hurdles, defeating world-record holder Karsten Warholm.

SAINT-DENIS, France (AP) — The night Noah Lyles won a bronze medal in the 200 meters, his coach said the sprinter had a 102-degree fever. It’s what made that medal, in his last sprint at the Paris Olympics, all the more impressive to Lance Brauman, who described the sprinter’s condition and his future in an interview with The Associated Press Friday. Lyles tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday and finished third in Thursday’s final behind Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo and American teammate Kenneth Bednarek. Lyles was back at the track Friday night wearing a protective mask while accepting his medal. Brauman says he expects Lyles to compete again at the 2028 Games.

PARIS (AP) — Down by 11 in the fourth quarter, against what looked like overwhelming odds, the U.S. Olympic men's basketball team got a spark.

Kevin Durant and Devin Booker provided that wild sequence to start the comeback, Stephen Curry had a scoring night like almost none other in U.S. Olympic history, and the Americans will play for gold at the Paris Games. Curry scored 36 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:16 left, and the U.S. beat Serbia 95-91 in a semifinal classic on Thursday night.

LeBron James had the fourth triple-double in Olympic history for the U.S., which trailed by 17 points in the first half and faced an 11-point halftime deficit — the biggest one successfully overcome by an American team since NBA players were added to the Olympic mix in 1992.

“I've seen a lot of Team USA basketball,” Curry said. “And that was a special one.”

Serbia led by 11 with 7:19 left. The rest of the way, it was all U.S. The Americans won a game where they led for 3 minutes, 25 seconds. Serbia led for 35:12 — nearly 90% of the game.

But it’ll be the U.S. against host France for gold in a dream matchup for the host nation on Saturday, while Serbia will face Germany earlier Saturday for bronze. The gold-medal game is a rematch from the Tokyo Games three years ago, where the Americans prevailed 87-82.

“I’m really humbled to have been a part of this game," U.S. coach Steve Kerr said, tipping his hat multiple times to Serbia. “It’s one of the greatest basketball games I’ve ever been a part of. They were perfect. They played a perfect game. Our coaches were saying Villanova-Georgetown, for all of our older readers and viewers out there.

"But they played the perfect game, and they forced us to reach the highest level of competition that we could find. And our guys were incredible in that fourth quarter, and they got it done.”

Joel Embiid scored 19 points on 8 for 11 shooting and James added 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for the U.S., which is now assured of its 20th medal in 20 Olympic appearances.

“Joel was everything," said James, who has two of the four triple-doubles in Olympic men's history; he also had one in 2012, while the Soviet Union's Aleksander Belov in 1976 and Slovenia's Luka Doncic in 2021 had the others. “Made every big shot.”

Bogdan Bogdanovic scored 20 points for Serbia, which got 17 from Nikola Jokic and 15 from Aleksa Avramovic. The Serbians were 0-3 against the U.S. this summer, getting blown out in the first two meetings and then looking poised for a win of their own on Thursday.

The whole game changed in the fourth after a wild sequence saw the U.S. score six points in two seconds. Durant made a 3-pointer while Anthony Davis was getting fouled. The U.S. got another possession because of the foul, and Booker immediately made another 3-pointer.

Just like that, a 78-67 lead for Serbia was down to 78-73. The comeback was on, and Curry's 3 put the U.S. up for good. He added a pair of free throws with 8.2 seconds left to make it a two-possession game and the Americans escaped.

Curry's 36 points were the second-most in a game by a U.S. men's player in Olympic history, one shy of Carmelo Anthony's record 37 against Nigeria in 2012. And Anthony, sitting courtside, was Curry's biggest cheerleader. When the Americans tied it with about 3:35 left, Curry gave Anthony a big smile. When the go-ahead 3 rattled home, Anthony leaped from his seat. And when it was over, the two shared a long embrace.

“That was a godlike performance," Durant said of Curry.

Serbia coach Svetislav Petic kept saying the same thing all summer, that the team the U.S. put together for the Paris Games was better than any in Olympic history. Even the Dream Team, he insisted. His mind wasn't changed after this one.

A barrage of Serbian 3-pointers had the Americans squarely on the ropes, until the game changed in the fourth. But in the end, the U.S. improved to 144-6 all-time in Olympic play, 63-4 since NBA players were added to the Olympics in 1992.

“Perseverance, hard work dedication, Chef Curry and Joel ‘Process’ Embiid,” James said. “Big-time win for us. We knew we were going to be challenged. We knew it was going to be the toughest game to date. Total effort.”

Gold is the goal, but that didn't keep the U.S. from celebrating upon returning to the team hotel. Down 42-25 at one point, down 11 in the fourth, the Americans outscored the Serbians 32-15 in the final quarter.

“I know we want to win the gold, but you've got to celebrate the small moments, too,” Durant said in a video distributed by USA Basketball well after midnight as he grabbed a postgame meal next to his mother, Wanda. “Guarantee you, everybody in here, they'll never forget this night. Everybody in here will remember this night for the rest of their lives. That's how special this is.”

The comeback kept Durant’s hopes of becoming the first four-time Olympic men’s gold medalist very much alive and gave the U.S. a chance to return to the international basketball mountaintop. The Americans were fourth at the World Cup last summer, a result that spurred some NBA stars like James and Curry to be part of this team.

And of all the U.S. semifinal moments, this was like few others. The four-point final margin was the second closest in American history in the Olympic semifinals; the U.S. beat Lithuania by two in the 2000 semifinals in Sydney, on the way to gold there.

US men's basketball team rallies to beat Serbia, will face France for gold medal

PARIS, France.&nbsp; - Tara Davis-Woodhall, an assistant coach under new K-State Wildcat track and field coach&nbsp;Travis Geopfert, walked away with Olympic gold on Thursday in the long jump, winning with a bound of roughly 23 feet, 4 inches (7.1 meters).&nbsp;&nbsp;

Davis-Woodhall was just announced as an assistant coach for the Wildcats back on Aug. 2nd.

“I’m thrilled to have Tara joining us at K-State. To say that she brings the energy is an understatement,” Geopfert said per a release. “I’ve loved coaching this young woman for the last three years and to bring her elite level experience to Manhattan is absolutely invaluable. She knows what it takes to be great, and she also fully understands the challenges of what life is like as both a student-athlete and as a professional athlete. Her mentorship of these young student-athletes is going to expedite their careers to an elite level in dramatic fashion. So excited to have TDW and her husband Hunter joining us in Manhattan!”

According to Kansas State Athletics, she graduated in 2021 from the University of Texas. She swept the 2020-21 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships in the long jump and was the Big 12 Outdoor Champion.

Before Texas, Davis-Woodhall spent her freshman year at Georgia where she was named the 2018 SEC Indoor Women’s Co-Freshman Field Athlete of the Year. All told she was a five-time First-Team All-American, with four honors in the long jump and one in the 60-meter hurdles.

Her husband Hunter Woodhall is also in attendance in Paris, is a 2024 U.S. Paralympian set for his third Olympic games in the 100- and 400-meter dash.

Chris Getz said the team's “performance this season has been
disappointing on many levels.” Major league coach Grady Sizemore
will take over as interim manager. Chicago also fired bench coach

Coach Matt Eberflus called it a good time for Williams to face a live

new deal. The 25-year-old Lamb is in the final year of his rookie
contract after leading the NFL in receptions last season. Quarterback
Dak Prescott — going into the final year of his own contract —
delivered pointed support of Lamb following Jones’ remarks.
Following his press conference, Prescott said to reporters in a
joking manner, “I know y’all want to ask, I got urgency for it to

Texas running back CJ Baxter injured a knee in practice this week and
will miss the 2024 season. Baxter will have surgery, but the team
provided no other details about the injury in a statement Wednesday.
Baxter in 2023 was the first Longhorn freshman tailback to start a
season opener since Ricky Williams in 1995. But he was limited by rib
and foot injuries in the first two games, and then sat out the third
game. Baxter finished the 2023 season with 659 yards rushing and five
touchdowns as Texas won the Big 12.

Juan “Chi Chi” Rodriguez, a Hall of Fame golfer whose antics on
the greens and inspiring life story made him among the sport’s most
popular players during a long professional career, died Thursday. He
was 88. Rodriguez’s death was announced by Carmelo Javier Ríos, a
senator in Rodriguez’s native Puerto Rico. Rodriguez said he
learned to play golf by hitting tin cans with a guava tree stick and
then found work as a caddie. He He served in the U.S. Army from
1955-57 and joined the PGA Tour in 1960 and won eight times during
his 21-year career, playing on one Ryder Cup team.

fell to his back and writhed around in pain, staying down for nearly
30 seconds before getting up, asking for water and getting to the
wheelchair. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone broke her own record and won
gold again in the women's 400 hurdles; Grant Holloway and Daniel

Olympics on TV for Friday, Aug. 9

MANHATTAN, Kan. – As part of K-State Athletics' continued effort to provide the Best Fan Experience in the Big 12, all athletics facilities will be cashless venues starting with the 2024-25 season. Going cashless will reduce wait times while providing a faster and more secure payment system for fans. The change will also allow the facilities and staff to operate more efficiently.

K-State Athletics has transitioned to entirely cashless payment systems throughout its venues. This changeover includes the ticket office, concessions, parking, Rally House locations, gameday Cat Cushion purchases and other points of sale in the facilities. Fans can use traditional credit/debit card payment methods, while checks will not be accepted.

K-State team stores transitioned to cashless payments during the 2020 season, and most of the concessions stands were converted to card-only stations over the past two seasons. The main concession stands will also accept Apple Pay.

Single-game parking transactions in the East and West lots of the K-State Athletics Complex will also transition to cashless payments. ADA parking for football will continue to be available for purchase on a first-come, first-served basis when lots open five hours prior to kickoff.

Men's and women's basketball single-game general admission parking will now be available for purchase in advance of gameday through the K-State ticket website (www.kstatesports.com/tickets). Fans can also purchase parking using a credit card on gameday when lots open 90 minutes prior to tipoff.

K-State Athletics Moves to Cashless Facilities in 2024-25

HAYS, Kan. - The 15th annual Tiger Auction and Dinner is approaching fast, set for Saturday, August 17, 2024 in the Schmidt-Bickle Indoor Training Facility on the campus of Fort Hays State University. Doors open at 4 p.m., dinner is served at 5 p.m., and the live auction begins at 6:30 p.m., running until about 10 p.m. Tickets are available online or through the FHSU Athletic Department at 785-628-4050. There is still an online portion of the auction with a limited number of items that precedes the live in-person event. The online portion runs from Monday, August 12 through Wednesday, August 14, which gives supporters an additional chance to support Tiger Athletics from any location.

Supporters can purchase $50 raffle tickets, which are good for a chance to win eight $1,000 cash prizes given out throughout the night (you do not have to be present to win). A $2000 cash prize will be given out before the last live item is sold, but the winner must be present for that drawing.

Item #40 this year will be focused on the Lewis Field turf project which will begin following the 2024 Tiger football season. The project will include replacing the "shock pad" and playing surface at Lewis Field which was installed in 2013 and removing the existing track surface and covering it with a new surface.

The shock pad is an elastic layer placed under the turf which increases shock absorption thus providing numerous benefits including safety issues and limiting concussions, field drainage, and increasing the longevity of the turf.

This project was specifically targeted to begin after the 2024 season to make sure all dirt work and early building construction on the Bickle-Schmidt Athletic Complex was complete to make it feasible for both crews to work on their respective projects side by side and to protect a brand new turf from the dirt and debris of the new complex construction. The total project cost is estimated to be around $1 million.

Donors at the $250 level or higher will be recognized in football and basketball programs throughout the year. All donations to Item #40 can be paid throughout the year and are tax deductible.

About the Tiger Auction and Dinner

This is one of the biggest annual events for the FHSU Athletic Department, which raised $353,360 at the 14th annual event in 2023.

This will be the seventh Tiger Auction and Dinner hosted inside the Schmidt-Bickle Indoor Training Facility, which has served as the venue for the event since 2017. The move to the large, spacious facility was a necessity due to this very popular event selling out year after year when held at the Memorial Union Ballroom in its early years. The move has allowed many more Tiger supporters to attend.
