Returning to dual action, the Barton Community College wrestling team split its pair of tussles Tuesday night in Parsons, Kansas, ending the night with a 26-20 victory over Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa following a 46-6 loss to No. 4 host Labette Community College.

Sitting at 2-4 in dual action, the Cougars will return to tournament action this Saturday to conclude a very busy month at the UNK Younes Hospitality Open held in Kearney, Nebraska.

Six different Cougars won a match on the evening as Barton went 6-4 against the Mavericks and 1-9 against the host Cardinals

Barton Wrestling salvages split dual with No. 5 Labette and NOC-Tonkawa

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State dispatched of Milwaukee in the opening five minutes of Wednesday night's game and cruised to a season-high 111-46 win at Bramlage Coliseum.

The 111 points are the second-most points K-State has scored in a game in program history and the most since setting the school record of 115 on Dec. 2, 2002, against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.&nbsp;K-State shot a season-high 60.0 percent from the field (45-of-75) and registered its highest field goal percentage since a 60.4 percent effort against Baylor on Feb. 15, 2023.K-State (5-0) improved its season-opening win streak to five. No. 10 K-State women put up 111 points in win over Milwaukee

Playing his home games in Claflin throughout high school, it was easy to
see that Myles Menges was good at football. Menges was the quarterback for
Central Plains High School when the Oilers went undefeated and won the state
championship in 2018. 

When the Bushton native signed to play at Fort Hays State
University, one might expect more success but few would have imagined the
success Menges had playing as a defensive lineman for the Tigers.

Sports Director in Hays and radio “Voice of the Tigers” Gerard Wellbrock said
Menges is a player that continued to build the culture for FHSU football.


"He's a great leader, on and off the field," said Wellbrock. "He was a COVID kid. He got the extra year. He's been in the program for a long time. He's a big reason why FHSU was able to build the program back up. He led by example."

6.5 tackles for loss, 11 pass breakups, an interception and a fumble recovery. 

"He's one of those players that the stats don't even show what he does, with the disruption he did," said Wellbrock. "He played a lot of linebacker, defensive end and even interior lineman. They moved him around everywhere on the defense. There's no one more deserving to be named Player of the Year defensively."

Menges went from being listed as 210 pounds in the signing day press release in
2019 to 260 pounds in his final year collegiately.


Former Larned High School player Mason Perez was also recognized as an All-MIAA
first-team selection at defensive back.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Big 12: Colorado, BYU seek title spots but KU, Arizona State making late impact

A seven point halftime advantage Wednesday evening at the Barton Gym trickled away in second half action as the Barton Community College women's basketball team dropped its conference opener 59-43 to top ranked Hutchinson Community College.

The Cougars pulled ahead in the second frame to lead by seven at the break, but the second half was another story in the final twenty minutes. Hutchinson's stifling defense forced 15 second half turnovers and limited Barton to just 12 second half points to flip the tide in taking the lead early in the fourth behind a 24-point output.

The loss drops Barton to 4-3 on the season while Hutchinson stays unblemished at 7-0. Conference opener produces OT, No. 1 Cougars escape with win over Hutchinson

The 6th seeded Barton Community College volleyball team opened its 22nd NJCAA Division I Tournament appearance with a straight set sweep over 11th seeded Navarro College (25-19, 27-25, 25-12) this morning in Clarksville, Tennessee.

Chalking up their sixth straight sweep improving to 32-2 on the season, Barton advances to Thursday's 4:00 p.m. quarterfinal round against 14th seeded Indian Hills Community College (26-9). Navarro's second straight-set loss to the Cougars this season drops into the 10:00 a.m. consolation match with a 21-12 record.

Competing simultaneously to the Cougars in kickstarting the tournament, IHCC also picked up a first-round sweep by taking down 3rd seeded New Mexico Military Institute (25-22, 25-22, 25-23) in snapping the Broncos' 25-match win streak. NMMI slides to 31-3 and will meet Navarro in the elimination contest.

The result of Thursday's Barton-IHCC match sends the victor to the Friday 7:00 p.m. semifinal with the loser to the Friday 4:00 p.m. side of the bracket in a best quest for a 5th placing.

Barton and IHCC will meet up for the second time this season, the Cougars coming out on top 3-1 at the Sheila Worley Tournament back on September 14 in Sterling, Colorado. Sparked by a trio of P. Reyes kills, Barton surged out to another big lead on five straight only to have Navarro fire back with five of their own closing the gap back to two at 16-14.

P. Reyes and Danenberg kills halted the Bulldogs' momentum then after trading points, Wierzbicki's inadvertent header proved lucky in pushing Barton's lead to 22-17. Wierzbicki would then help the Cougars close out the opener with two kills for the match lead.

Back and forth the teams slugged it out in the second, Navarro holding the advantage throughout until three straight created a 16-12 lead.

The gap increased to five at 21-16 and again at 23-18 but the Cougars refused to lose in finally stringing multiple points together for the first time since tying it at 10-all.

Thompson and Wierzbicki's teamed up block sparked a pivotal stretch, Wiezbicki following Navarro's timeout with a vicious attack and Danenberg serving up an ace prompting another Bulldog timeout as Barton closed to within 23-22.

A Navarro attack error tied it up, but the Bulldogs answered back in gaining consecutive set points. No stranger to late set comebacks, Barton again pulled a Cougar out of the hat continuing its roaring back with two straight capped by P. Reyes' kill.

Barton Volleyball into national quarterfinals, first serve set for 4 p.m. today

Playing as the No. 6 seed against Navarro (Texas), Barton made quick work of its opponent 25-19, 27-25, 25-12 to stay on the winner's side of the tournament. Barton wins first-round match at national volleyball tournament

The 7th ranked Barton Community College volleyball team received the sixth seed for the NJCAA Division I National Tournament taking place November 20-23 in Clarksville, Tennessee.

Compiling a 31-2 record on the season and making their 22nd National Tournament appearance, the Cougars get the event started with Wednesday's opening 10:00 a.m. match on Court 2 in the Dunn Center of Austin Peay University against 11th seeded Navarro College (21-11).

The victor advances to Thursday 4:00 p.m. match against the winner of 3rd seeded New Mexico Military Institute (31-2) and 14th seeded Indian Hills Community College (25-9) taking place simultaneously on Court 1. The losers of each match will again get the day started on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in the double elimination format tournament.

Five of Barton's victories this season have come over ranked opponents, four of those being straight set sweeps including an August 24 sweep over then-6th ranked Navarro in the Garden City Tournament.

Now on an eight-match win streak, Barton started the season 13-0 until falling to then-13th ranked Odessa College in four sets on September 13 in Colorado before having a ten game unbeaten streak end October 16 on another 3-1 loss to then-6th ranked Colby. Both teams are also in the Tournament, Odessa going on to compile a 28-8 overall record earning the7th seed while Colby was awarded a 13th seed with a 26-4 record.

Barton Volleyball receives 6th seed, Cougars begin at 10 a.m. today

Kansas is certainly having an impact on the top of the Big 12 standings, just not as expected after being one of the preseason favorites in the expanded 16-team conference.

The Jayhawks may be to blame if the Big 12 ends up getting only one team in the new 12-team College Football Playoff, or potentially none in a worst-case scenario.

Instead of competing for a spot in the conference championship game, Kansas (4-6, 3-4 Big 12) is just trying to become bowl eligible, focusing on beating ranked contenders in November. After consecutive wins over Top 25 teams for first time in school history — Iowa State and then BYU,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/kansas-byu-score-top-25-b4defe085ed8458d8c7668735110f754">which was undefeated before last Saturday</a>&nbsp;— the Jayhawks now host league co-leader No. 16 Colorado.

“We know the kind of team we are, we know how good we can be, and coming into (BYU), people might label it an upset,” Kansas receiver Luke Grimm said. “But I don’t think anybody on the team labels it an upset based on how we know our team can play.”

BYU's home loss to the Jayhawks dropped the Big 12's highest-ranked team seven spots to No. 14 in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll">latest AP Top 25</a>&nbsp;poll. The Cougars (9-1, 6-1) fell eight to 14th in the new&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-playoff-rankings-bac3b15c23e86753ccf1a98e30d1448e">College Football Playoff rankings</a>&nbsp;released Tuesday night.

That has BYU below teams from the Big Ten, SEC, ACC and Mountain West in both rankings. The Cougars and Colorado (8-2, 6-1), ranked 16th in both, still remain above undefeated American Athletic Conference leader Army, which jumped five spots to 19th on the CFP list.

The five highest-ranked conference champions in the final CFP rankings on Dec. 8 are automatically in the 12-team playoff field, with the top four getting first-round byes. Those rankings will then determine the seven at-large selections. The latest projections would have the Big 12 champion, if BYU or Colorado, as the No. 12 seed.

Five other teams below them all have 4-3 records to remain mathematically eligible: Baylor, Kansas State, TCU, Texas Tech and West Virginia.

Kansas is altering the Big 12's playoff status while finally impacting the standings

In 2021, the Kansas State High School Activities Association agreed to partner with Special Olympics Kansas to encourage and develop unified bowling in the state. In September 2023, the USD 428 Board of Education approved the sport at Great Bend High School. Tuesday in Topeka, the Panther bowlers collected their first state title.

Unified bowling combines athletes with and without intellectual disabilities. Athletes must have a recognized intellectual disability, and they are paired with partners who are classmates at the school. Teams have have up to five members with three designated as competitors and two substitutes. The three competing students must include two athletes and one partner. Competitions follow the Baker format with four frames, including the 10th, bowled by the partner, and six frames bowled by the two athletes.

Twenty teams competed in Tuesday's state championships at West Ridge Lanes in Topeka. Great Bend's team of Payton Edwards, Keaton Wahlmeier, Kanyen Parr, Zoey Mayberry, and Xander Orth was the only squad to break 1,000 pins with a total of 1,110. Hays finished second with 945 pins, Liberal placed third with 936 pins, and Garden City completed the top-four sweep with 857 pins. Most of the other schools in competition hailed from the northeast corner of the state.

The Panthers are coached by David Feldbauer, who has led the Lady Panthers to back-to-back Class 5A state championships.
