Alex Ovechkin&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/capitals-alex-ovechkin-injury-ir-5ec1d26e883937be5a23c1f1fb814779">has a broken left fibula</a>&nbsp;and is expected to be out four to six weeks, an injury that pauses the Washington Capitals superstar captain’s pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s NHL career goals record.

The Capitals updated Ovechkin’s status Thursday after he was evaluated by team doctors upon returning from a three-game trip. The 39-year-old broke the leg in a shin-on-shin collision Monday night with Utah’s Jack McBain, and some of his closest teammates knew it was not good news even before&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/capitals-alex-ovechkin-injury-500d2cb620b298e622316b4734ec9693">Ovechkin was listed as week to week</a>&nbsp;and placed on injured reserve.

“Everyone’s bummed out,” said winger Tom Wilson, who has played with Ovechkin since 2013. “We were sitting there saying: ‘This is weird. Like, it’s unbelievable that he’s actually hurt.’ It’s one of those things where like, he’s going to miss games? I’ve been around a long time, and it’s new to me.”

Ovechkin in his first 19 seasons missed 59 games — and just 35 because of injury. Durability even while throwing his body around with his physical style is a big reason he is on track to pass Gretzky’s mark of 894 goals that once looked unapproachable.

“He doesn’t go out there and just coast around,” Wilson said. “He’s played 20 years every shift running over guys and skating. He’s a power forward, the best goal-scorer ever maybe, and he’s a power forward that plays the game really hard.”

Ovechkin surged to the top of the league with 15 goals in his first 18 games this season. He was on pace to break the record and score No. 895 sometime in February.

“You know when goal-scorers start scoring, it’s dangerous,” said defenseman John Carlson, who has been teammates with Ovechkin since 2009-10. “There was a bit of that in the downs that everyone was feeling about it too, of course. We see him coming to the rink every day, we know what’s at stake. You never want anyone to get injured, but there’s a lot to it and certainly he was playing his best hockey in years.”

The Barton Community College swimming programs entered the holiday break behind their best performances of the season this past weekend at the Eagle Invitational, as the Cougars hit five season best times, 37 personal best marks with seven new program top-10 performances and one program record going down at the Mitch Park YMCA in Edmond, Oklahoma.

Competing as the lone NJCAA school over the three-day event, both Barton programs produced sixth place finishes with the Lady Cougars tallying 70 points over the 39-events while their counterparts the Barton men accumulated a 119 point total.

The Cougars will enjoy the extended holiday break before opening the second half of the season January 18th at Colorado State University Pueblo followed by hosting the Barton Invitational January 31 and February 1.

Men's Recap <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mswimdive/2024-25/bios/guimaraes_arnaldo_6ayy">Arnaldo Guimaraes</a>&nbsp;highlighted the weekend taking down the program's top 200-yard breaststroke time shaving 12-seconds off his previous best stoppage to top the 24-partipant field in 2:01.20 and claim the Cougars lone individual crown over the three-day event.

The freshman continued his dominate season with two more program top 5 impacts, finishing fourth with the second quickest stoppage of 55.21 in the 100-yard breaststroke and ninth place result in the 200-yard IM in 1:52.04 for the program's fifth quickest time.

Also adding a pair of program top-10 times was&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mswimdive/2024-25/bios/wallet_mateo_ja6u">Mateo Wallet</a>&nbsp;collecting a 10th place finish in the 100-yard freestyle and 11th place result in the 200-yard freestyle. The freshman displayed the programs seventh fastest wall touch with a 46.88 in the 100-freestyle before clocking the fifth quickest 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.21.

As a squad, the Barton men pieced together 23 new personal best times.

Women's Recap Despite not winning an event over the three-day course, the Lady Cougars netted 13 new personal best times with two new program top-10 impacts and four new season best performances.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wswimdive/2024-25/bios/cicha_aleksandra_l8hj">Aleksandra Cicha</a>&nbsp;delivered the highest individual finish over the weekend with an 11th place finish in the 22-competitor 100-yard butterfly with the ninth quickest stoppage of 1:02.22.

Guimaraes breaks program record, Barton swimmers set 37 PRs at Eagle

The 6th seeded Barton Community College volleyball team continued its NJCAA Division I Tournament march with a resounding sweep over 14th seeded Indian Hills Community College (25-21, 25-14, 25-16) Thursday evening in Clarksville, Tennessee. The seventh straight sweep sends the now 33-2 Cougars into the remaining top four teams of the tournament, playing Friday's 7 p.m. semifinal versus 2nd seeded Miami Dade College (24-2) as the Sharks battled from behind in pulling out a 5-set victory over 10th seeded Missouri State-West Plains. Indian Hills, who lost 3-1 to the Cougars back on Sept. 14 in Sterling, Colo., drops to 26-10 on the year bouncing into Friday's 4:00 p.m. consolation bracket versus West Plains (35-6) in battling for an eventual best-finish fifth placing.

The Cougars again took command early in the second set behind a trio of Nixon court punishers in building a 9-2 lead. Two straight cut the margin to five but it would be the closest the rest of the way as a pair of three straight stretches pushed the gap to ten with a final push of a 4-0 run keyed by P. Reyes and Wierzbicki all but sealed the set at 22-11.

In the third Indian Hills grabbed their lone leads, winning the first two points with another two straight a short time later taking their advantage to 5-3.

From there it was all Cougars, Wierzbicki keying a 4-0 run to flip the advantage before sparking another trio of points expanding the margin out to 10-6.

Barton kept Indian Hills from getting any closer than two points through the mid-set before burying the Warriors with a 7-0 run for a 22-13 score. Three service aces from M. Reyes set the Warriors on their heels with Danenberg and Thompson attacks bookending the decisive run.

Following a last ditch effort of three consecutive Warrior tallies, Thompson's kill followed by a Danenberg ace and Nixon's kill completed the sweep.

Cougars advance to national semifinals with sweep against Indian Hills

Moss averaged a 14.3 point, 10.7 rebound double-double week leading the Cougars to a trio of victories last week including a pair in the Best Western/Cougar Booster Club Basketball Classic.

Opening the week, Moss was effective on the glass helping the Cougars to a plus-five edge on the boards with a game high 13 rebounds including seven on the offensive side while adding six points and dishing out four assists in the 93-74 victory over North Platte Community College.

The sophomore delivered a pair of career highs to kick off the Best Western/Cougar Booster Club Basketball Classic dropping 27 points on 52.9-percent shooting with 15 rebounds none bigger than securing the rebound on NOC-Enid's go ahead shot attempt with 1:24 left helping Barton squeeze out a 75-72 win over the Jets.

Moss concluded the weekend with 10 points and four rebounds in just 17-minutes of court time in the Cougars 96-53 route over Harry S. Truman College.

Receiving the top spot in Monday's week two NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Poll, the Cougars will turn their focus to the rugged KJCCC slate beginning Wednesday in hosting the Blue Dragons of Hutchinson Community College in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off before hitting the road Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. road contest against Garden City Community College.

Returning to dual action, the Barton Community College wrestling team split its pair of tussles Tuesday night in Parsons, Kansas, ending the night with a 26-20 victory over Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa following a 46-6 loss to No. 4 host Labette Community College.

Sitting at 2-4 in dual action, the Cougars will return to tournament action this Saturday to conclude a very busy month at the UNK Younes Hospitality Open held in Kearney, Nebraska.

Barton Wrestling salvages split dual with No. 5 Labette and NOC-Tonkawa

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State dispatched of Milwaukee in the opening five minutes of Wednesday night's game and cruised to a season-high 111-46 win at Bramlage Coliseum.

The 111 points are the second-most points K-State has scored in a game in program history and the most since setting the school record of 115 on Dec. 2, 2002, against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.&nbsp;K-State shot a season-high 60.0 percent from the field (45-of-75) and registered its highest field goal percentage since a 60.4 percent effort against Baylor on Feb. 15, 2023.K-State (5-0) improved its season-opening win streak to five. This is the third straight season the Wildcats have opened a season with a five-game winning streak and marks the first time in program history K-State has started three consecutive seasons with a 5-0 record.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State dispatched of Milwaukee in the opening five minutes of Wednesday night's game and cruised to a season-high 111-46 win at Bramlage Coliseum.The 111 points are the second-most points K-State has scored in a game in program history and the most since setting the school record of 115 on Dec. 2, 2002, against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.&nbsp;K-State shot a season-high 60.0 percent from the field (45-of-75) and registered its highest field goal percentage since a 60.4 percent effort against Baylor on Feb. 15, 2023.K-State (5-0) improved its season-opening win streak to five. No. 10 K-State women put up 111 points in win over Milwaukee

Playing his home games in Claflin throughout high school, it was easy to
see that Myles Menges was good at football. Menges was the quarterback for
Central Plains High School when the Oilers went undefeated and won the state
championship in 2018. 

When the Bushton native signed to play at Fort Hays State
University, one might expect more success but few would have imagined the
success Menges had playing as a defensive lineman for the Tigers.

Sports Director in Hays and radio “Voice of the Tigers” Gerard Wellbrock said
Menges is a player that continued to build the culture for FHSU football.


"He's a great leader, on and off the field," said Wellbrock. "He was a COVID kid. He got the extra year. He's been in the program for a long time. He's a big reason why FHSU was able to build the program back up. He led by example."

Menges was named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Year this fall, becoming the
fourth Fort Hays player to earn the honor. He recorded 27 tackles, 5.5 sacks,
6.5 tackles for loss, 11 pass breakups, an interception and a fumble recovery. 

"He's one of those players that the stats don't even show what he does, with the disruption he did," said Wellbrock. "He played a lot of linebacker, defensive end and even interior lineman. They moved him around everywhere on the defense. There's no one more deserving to be named Player of the Year defensively."

Menges went from being listed as 210 pounds in the signing day press release in
2019 to 260 pounds in his final year collegiately.


Former Larned High School player Mason Perez was also recognized as an All-MIAA
first-team selection at defensive back.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Arizona State was picked at the bottom of the 16-team league in the preseason media poll, but already has&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/arizona-state-sun-devils-kansas-state-wildcats-score-d568624894657c2ff9325b68ed7cba6c">a five-win improvement</a>&nbsp;in coach Kenny Dillingham’s second season.

Coach Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes are in prime position to make the Big 12 title game in their return to the league after 13 seasons in the Pac-12. If BYU and Utah win, Colorado would be able to claim the other title game spot with a win over Kansas. The Buffs have a four-game winning streak.

This is Mike Gundy’s 20th season as head coach, and his longest losing streak before now was five in a row in 2005, his first season and the last time the Cowboys didn’t make a bowl game. ... Baylor plays at Houston for the first time since 1995, the final Southwest Conference season. The Cougars won last year in the only meeting since to even the series 14-14-1. ... Eight Big 12 teams are bowl eligible. As many as six more teams could reach six wins.

The Big 12 already has four 1,000-yard rushers, including three who did it last season. UCF’s RJ Harvey is the league’s top rusher (1,328 yards) and top scorer with 21 touchdowns (19 rushing/two receiving). A seven point halftime advantage Wednesday evening at the Barton Gym trickled away in second half action as the Barton Community College women's basketball team dropped its conference opener 59-43 to top ranked Hutchinson Community College.

The Cougars pulled ahead in the second frame to lead by seven at the break, but the second half was another story in the final twenty minutes. Hutchinson's stifling defense forced 15 second half turnovers and limited Barton to just 12 second half points to flip the tide in taking the lead early in the fourth behind a 24-point output.

The loss drops Barton to 4-3 on the season while Hutchinson stays unblemished at 7-0. Barton will next hit the road for a pair of games beginning Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. tip at Garden City Community followed by a Tuesday 6:00 p.m. tip at Cloud County Community College. Following the holiday break, the Cougars return home Saturday, November 30, for a 5:30 p.m. start hosting Cowley College.

First half advantage evaporates, Barton women fall to top-ranked Hutchinson

A conference opener and a rivalry, Wednesday's rematch of the 2024 Region 6 Championship produced everything it was billed for as it took overtime for the top ranked Barton Community College men's basketball team to escape with a 94-89 home victory over Hutchinson Community College.

As both teams shot over 47% and won each half by ten points, the 8th tie break was won by the Cougars in just their first overtime in 103 games by outscoring the Blue Dragons for their seventh straight win in the series.

Now 6-0 on the year following their 33rd straight win, the Cougars embark on a two-game road swing beginning Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. tip at Garden City Community followed by a Tuesday 8:00 p.m. tip at Cloud County Community College. Following the holiday break, the Cougars return home Saturday, November 30, for a 7:30 p.m. start hosting 24th ranked Cowley College.

The 6th seeded Barton Community College volleyball team opened its 22nd NJCAA Division I Tournament appearance with a straight set sweep over 11th seeded Navarro College (25-19, 27-25, 25-12) this morning in Clarksville, Tennessee.

Chalking up their sixth straight sweep improving to 32-2 on the season, Barton advances to Thursday's 4:00 p.m. quarterfinal round against 14th seeded Indian Hills Community College (26-9). Navarro's second straight-set loss to the Cougars this season drops into the 10:00 a.m. consolation match with a 21-12 record.

Competing simultaneously to the Cougars in kickstarting the tournament, IHCC also picked up a first-round sweep by taking down 3rd seeded New Mexico Military Institute (25-22, 25-22, 25-23) in snapping the Broncos' 25-match win streak. NMMI slides to 31-3 and will meet Navarro in the elimination contest.

The result of Thursday's Barton-IHCC match sends the victor to the Friday 7:00 p.m. semifinal with the loser to the Friday 4:00 p.m. side of the bracket in a best quest for a 5th placing.

Barton and IHCC will meet up for the second time this season, the Cougars coming out on top 3-1 at the Sheila Worley Tournament back on September 14 in Sterling, Colorado. Indian Hills took the first set 25-22 with Barton flipping the tide in the second by the same tally before wrapping up the match on 25-19 and 25-12 scores.

RECAPAn opening block by Olander and Nixon scored the first points of the day as Barton would get off to a good 4-1 start to later string four straight in opening up a 10-3 lead.

Four consecutive Cougar attack errors swung the momentum with another attack error and giving up an ace drawing Navarro to within 11-9.

Sparked by a trio of P. Reyes kills, Barton surged out to another big lead on five straight only to have Navarro fire back with five of their own closing the gap back to two at 16-14.

P. Reyes and Danenberg kills halted the Bulldogs' momentum then after trading points, Wierzbicki's inadvertent header proved lucky in pushing Barton's lead to 22-17. Wierzbicki would then help the Cougars close out the opener with two kills for the match lead.

Back and forth the teams slugged it out in the second, Navarro holding the advantage throughout until three straight created a 16-12 lead.

The gap increased to five at 21-16 and again at 23-18 but the Cougars refused to lose in finally stringing multiple points together for the first time since tying it at 10-all.

Thompson and Wierzbicki's teamed up block sparked a pivotal stretch, Wiezbicki following Navarro's timeout with a vicious attack and Danenberg serving up an ace prompting another Bulldog timeout as Barton closed to within 23-22.

A Navarro attack error tied it up, but the Bulldogs answered back in gaining consecutive set points. No stranger to late set comebacks, Barton again pulled a Cougar out of the hat continuing its roaring back with two straight capped by P. Reyes' kill.

Gaining its two set lead, Barton kept rolling with the momentum taking the first three points of the final frame to later string four straight to match its opening set's 10-3 advantage.

Another four straight coming mid-set all but buried the Bulldogs at 19-8 as Barton kept the hammer down in cruising to the thirteen point match clincher.

Barton wins first-round match at national volleyball tournament

Kansas is certainly having an impact on the top of the Big 12 standings, just not as expected after being one of the preseason favorites in the expanded 16-team conference.

The Jayhawks may be to blame if the Big 12 ends up getting only one team in the new 12-team College Football Playoff, or potentially none in a worst-case scenario.

That has BYU below teams from the Big Ten, SEC, ACC and Mountain West in both rankings. The Cougars and Colorado (8-2, 6-1), ranked 16th in both, still remain above undefeated American Athletic Conference leader Army, which jumped five spots to 19th on the CFP list.

The five highest-ranked conference champions in the final CFP rankings on Dec. 8 are automatically in the 12-team playoff field, with the top four getting first-round byes. Those rankings will then determine the seven at-large selections. The latest projections would have the Big 12 champion, if BYU or Colorado, as the No. 12 seed.
