Timely hitting provided Neosho County's 7-5 victory in the opener snapping the Cougars' 10-game win streak followed by game two's back-and-forth battle decided by freshman&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/alvord_karter_0j92">Karter Alvord</a>'s eighth inning walk-off single for an 8-7 victory salving Barton's split.

The Cougars, who now are receiving votes in the latest Division I poll, end the day at 16-6 while Neosho County moves to 11-9 overall.

Barton resumes its three-date homestand and returns to conference play on Thursday hosting Fort Hays Tech Northwest, a contest moved back a day escaping Wednesday's forecasted bad weather. The homestand will then wrap up Saturday in welcoming 15th ranked Butler Community College in a key conference title race twinbill. Game One RecapWood's solo shot to open Barton's at-bat gave the Cougars the lead through the top of the third until Gaddis' 1-out, two-run producing hit put Neosho in front.

Barton wouldn't capitalize any further, stranding the bases loaded in the inning and again in the fourth frame despite the bags being full on just one-out.

A pair of hits leading off the Neosho fifth would eventually score on one-out, Gaddis driving in the first with Kamri Naff's lone hit providing the second. Next in line was Annsleigh Morris, striking out in her previous two at-bats against Ingram, laying down a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt scoring the Panthers' third run of the frame.

Neosho produced the eventual game winners with two outs in the sixth, Gaddis capping her big opener by delivering a 2-strike single pushing the Panthers' lead to 7-3.

The Cougars' seventh inning rally fell two runs shy, getting a little help to begin the frame on a wild pitch third strike allowing Mascarenas to reach base. A line-out later, Thatcher's double down the line put two aboard with Alvord cutting the deficit in half on the freshman's fifth double of the season to later become Barton's 12th runner stranded in the contest.

Game Two RecapThe backend of the twinbill was a back-n-forth affair, Neosho taking the early lead with a bases loaded Naff single before Barton got the run back in the second frame on Mascarenas' run producing double.

Following a scoreless third, the lone goose egg inning of the contest, consecutive doubles leading off the fourth put Neosho back in front.

The Cougars would answer with three in the home half to gain their first lead. Masacarenas and Thatcher walks would get the inning started, scoring one batter later on Wood's fourth double of the season. Two outs later Ensligner's single put the Cougars up two by driving in her team leading 38th run.

The lead was short lived as a pair of fifth inning leadoff infield hits set the stage for a two-run Panther answer coming on one-out and two-out RBI hits.

Still tied at four into the sixth inning, the Cougars rallied on two-outs getting consecutive two-bag connections from Enslinger and McCormick in taking a 5-4 lead to the seventh.

Neosho immediately loaded the bases in their comeback but the Cougars were on the very of escaping damage as a Panther was ruled leaving early on a tag from a lined out to left. Down to their final out, Makenzi Escoe, who took over in the circle in the fourth inning and laid down a sac bunt extending the fifth frame leading to a run, made the most of her first official at-bat by delivering the tying RBI hit.

Following a three-up, three-down Barton seventh, the teams headed to extra frames utilizing the international tiebreaker system placing a runner at second to begin each team's at-bat.

A leadoff double put the Panthers on top but Angielski struck out the next two batters in appearing to halt the damage until Addison Bloodgood completed her 3-of-4 game and five hit afternoon out of the No. 9 hole with an RBI single digging Barton a two-run deficit.

An infield pop-up began Barton's at-bat but consecutive doubles by Lawrence and Bartlett quickly tied the game at seven. Enslinger's following hit chased Escoe from the game with the Panthers bringing back game one victor Eleanor Rieck. Despite the growing attention on women’s soccer globally, the vast majority of players and teams still struggle for resources and investment. FIFA on Monday released its annual report on the women’s game, highlighting the inequities across the sport. Soccer’s world governing body expanded the fourth edition's scope from 34 leagues to 86 leagues and some 669 teams, providing a more accurate picture of the state of the game.

Rory McIlroy has won The Players Championship in a three-hole playoff against J.J. Spaun that lacked any real drama. McIlroy blasted a drive down the 16th fairway to set up a birdie. And then Spaun sailed over the island green on the par-3 17th and into the water for a triple bogey. McIlroy is the eighth multiple winner of the PGA Tour's premier championship. It's also the first time in his career he has won twice early in the season before the Masters. It was the first Monday finish in three years because of a four-hour rain delay on Sunday.

A pair of walk-off victories gave the home fans at Lawson-Biggs Field plenty to cheer about on Saturday afternoon as the Barton Community College baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep over No. 20 Hutchinson Community College, winning the opener in run-rule fashion 20-10 in five-innings before completing it in comeback style by a final tally of 9-8.

Sophomore&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/alvord_hunter_t2fs">Hunter Alvord</a>&nbsp;extended his consecutive-game hitting streak to then seven straight games with a walk-off double in the opening five-inning run rule victory before&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/connors_john_py2o">John Connors</a>&nbsp;sent a Cougar mob around home plate in the nightcap distributing a two-run home run to right center for his second of the game to walk it off.

Winning the final three games after dropping the opener, the Cougars improve to 7-1 in league play and 12-4 overall while the Blue Dragons drop their first conference series loss sliding to 4-4 in Jayhawk West play and 17-7 overall.

Barton will head back out on the road Monday for a non-conference doubleheader at Southeast Community College. First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from Norfolk Veterans Memorial Baseball Field in Norfolk, Nebraska. The Cougars will return to conference play Thursday hosting Cloud County Community College in the opening two games of a four-game set with the T-Birds.

Within Barton's 27 hits on the afternoon, eight left the ballpark headlined by the multi home run performances of&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/blasi_tate_jtvc">Tate Blasi</a>,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/oviatt_hayden_824d">Hayden Oviatt</a>&nbsp;and Connors while&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/bsb/2024-25/bios/hadley_ayden_rwzb">Ayden Hadley</a>&nbsp;and Alvord each contributed with one.

Game 1 RecapTangled in a 1-1 tie heading to the bottom of the second, the Cougar offense exploded sending 14-straight to the plate erupting for a 12-run frame. The first of two Blasi home runs to lead off the inning jumpstarted the scoring with the sophomore adding a three-run bomb batting for the second time in the inning.

Two hitters later, Oviatt joined the party driving in two of his game high six RBI performance with the first of his pair of two-run homers in the frame with his second a liner just clearing the fences in left field.

Hadley delivered the other big blow in the 12-run second launching his first collegiate grand slam for one of his five hits produced throughout the doubleheader.

Not going down without a fight, Hutchinson clawed back scoring nine unanswered over the next three at-bats to pull within three, 13-10 heading to the bottom of the fifth.

Held in check over the next two frames, the Barton offense regrouped in the home fifth benefitting behind a pair of Blue Dragon errors and trio of hits creating a seven-run final turn at the plate.

Game 2 RecapTrailing from the start, the Cougars continued to stay within arm's reach on three separate occasions before finally piecing together the final charge in the bottom of the ninth.

Needing a run and down to their final two outs, Hadley nearly fashioned the game-tying run with a home run, lacing his fourth hit of the contest with an opposite field triple off the left center field fence putting the tying run 90-feet away.

Stepping to the plate with a home run already, Connors answered the call working the count full before sending his second no-doubter out to right center to cap the second comeback victory in as many days and Cougar celebration at home plate.

Hit with a 3-0 deficit before coming to bat, Alvord's first inning no-doubter to left center followed by Oviatt's leadoff single in the second scoring on a wild pitch trimmed the Cougars deficit to one, 3-2 after two.

Hutchinson added a run in the third and fifth to maintain a 5-2 lead, Connors first of his two big fly's brought Barton back within a run once again at 5-4 through five.

Four of the first five Blue Dragon hitters reached base to open the sixth with four runs scoring to extend the Hutchinson advantage to 9-4.

Continuing to chip away the Cougars got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on Oviatt's RBI groundout and three more in the seventh off a Hadley RBI double, Gomez RBI fielder's choice and Blasi run producing double drawing back within 9-8 before producing the two-run ninth inning walk-off.

Barton Softball continues to roll with sweep at Pratt

The 14th Barton Community College men's basketball team received an at-large bid and the 9th seed for the 2025 NJCAA Division I National Tournament as announced Sunday evening on the NJCAA's Selection Show.

The defending national champion Cougars will take 25-8 record into the tournament's second day of action, opening play at noon Sunday, March 23, against Atlantic District Champion and 24th seeded Brunswick Community College (28-4).

Most recently, Barton made its third straight appearance in the Region 6/Plains District Championship game, coming up short to 5th ranked Cowley College. The Tigers, the lone other Region 6 team in the tournament, received the 2nd seed with a first round bye and will play Monday, March 24, in the 2:30 p.m. contest against the victor of last year's national runner-up Triton College versus Columbia State Community College first round game.

In the win or go home format, a victory would send the Cougars to Tuesday's noon tilt against fellow at-large bid recipient 8th seeded Daytona State College (27-5).

A person familiar with the negotiations told the Associated Press that Chase will become the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history, earning $161 million, including $112 million guaranteed. That surpasses the $40 million per year average by Cleveland pass rusher Myles Garrett. Higgins will get $115 million. The Bengals placed the franchise tag on Higgins, but were hopeful of getting a new deal done. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the move.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Doc Rivers says he saw star potential in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander while coaching him as a rookie before the Los Angeles Clippers traded him to Oklahoma City. Kevin Overton had 20 points and Christian Anderson scored 19 for the Red Raiders, who played without Chance McMillian and Darrion Williams because of injuries, and then watched star forward JT Toppin throw up in the arena tunnel. Toppin finished with 11 points in 25 minutes.

Big 12 Semifinal recap, Championship Set

In a dogfight double-overtime semifinal at the Class 4A State Basketball Championship, the McPherson Bullpups take out the previously undefeated No. 1 Ottawa Cyclones with a 52-50 victory on Friday at the Tony's Pizza Events Center in Salina.

An extremely competitive game, McPherson held a narrow 29-28 lead at halftime. Ottawa surged in the third quarter, at one point led by seven, but McPherson rallied to tie the game. Both teams were strategic in the final quarter and the first overtime, both focused on clock management and defense. With neither side able to score in the first over time the game proceeded into a second overtime. In the final moments, McPherson senior Gabe Pyle executed a spin move and made a shot at the buzzer.

With the win the Bullpups head to their 3rd straight title game appearance and aim to score a 15th state title.

The championship game will be held at 4PM at the Tony's Pizza Events Center in Salina.

The Cougars established a commanding 42-21 lead by halftime, showcasing a dominant first-half performance. Despite a stronger second half from Coffeyville, Barton maintained their advantage to seal the win. A key contributor for Barton included Keandre Kindell, who logged 37 minutes, shot 9-15 from the field and was perfect 7-7 from the free-throw line. He also had 2 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals with a total of 25 points.

With the win the Barton Men advance to the Region 6 Championship game, where they will face the Cowley Tigers on Saturday at 5PM at Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays.
