Tenacious D is not just a comedy rock duo featuring Jack Black. It's what new Great Bend High School girls' basketball coach Jade Winter wants to see out of her defense. The Lady Panthers will have the opportunity to display the new defense in front of a home crowd for tonight's season-opener against Salina South. 

"I want to just get after it and get lots of deflections," Winter said. "Even if we don't get a lot of steals, just getting a hand on the ball and deflecting it out of bounds changes the mindset of the offensive team."

Winter was a Class 6A state runner-up as a senior at Derby High School in 2017, playing alongside then-sophomore Kennedy Brown, who would go on to play at Oregon State and Duke. After high school, Winter played at Fort Scott Community College and Park University in Kansas City before earning a degree from Wichita State University. While attending graduate school, Winter moved to her family's farm in Bison where she was recruited to coach at Otis-Bison High School. She wants to bring a similar coaching style to Great Bend.

"I really like to play fast basketball," she said. "Fast, aggressive, we're getting up and down the floor. If we don't have to run an offense when we get down there, great. That's what I like the most. I'm really excited we get a shot clock this year. I just think the game is going to speed up so much and it's going to be more of that college feel."

Winter spent three years at Otis-Bison and has been a MAYB coach since 2019. She continues to coach the Marion Heim's Dream Team.

Winter ready to lead Lady Panthers after three years at Otis-Bison

For the first time in 15 years, a K-State women's basketball player recorded a triple-double as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/serena-sundell/11858">Serena Sundell</a>&nbsp;earned the distinction during a 110-24 win over USC Upstate on Thursday night at Bramlage Coliseum.&nbsp;The 86-point margin of victory was the largest in program history, while this marks the 110 or more points in two games in the same season.

Sundell filled her stat line with 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting and a 6-of-7 effort from the foul line, a career-high and school record-tying 13 assists, 10 rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot. Sundell becomes the fifth K-State player to record a triple-double and the first since Shalee Lehning carded a triple-double at Colorado on March 7, 2009.&nbsp;Sundell's 26 points were the most points in a K-State triple-double and her 13 assists were the most helpers in a K-State triple-double.

Joining Sundell in double figures were&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/taryn-sides/11857">Taryn Sides</a>&nbsp;with a career-high 23 points with a career-high seven 3-pointers. The sophomore from Phillipsburg added five rebounds, three assists and two steals to her line. Sides is the first Wildcat to make seven or more 3-pointers in a game since Rachel Ranke made eight at Oklahoma on Feb. 10, 2019.

Senior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/temira-poindexter/11861">Temira Poindexter</a>&nbsp;tallied 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-4 from distance.

Senior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/eliza-maupin/11854">Eliza Maupin</a>&nbsp;tallied 15 points on 6-of-6 shooting, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Senior&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/kennedy-taylor/11860">Kennedy Taylor</a>&nbsp;notched 11 points and six rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED - K-State (9-1) held USC Upstate (2-9) to one made field goal (1-of-15; .067) in the first quarter and won the frame, 27-2. The two points allowed tied the school record for the fewest points allowed in a quarter since the advent of the quarter system at the start of the 2015-16 season. - The Wildcats would win the second quarter, 23-11, shooting 52.9 percent (9-of-17) in the stanza. K-State would hold a 50-13 lead at halftime. - In the first half, Poindexter led K-State with 14 points, while Sundell filled her stat line with 11 points, seven assists, five rebounds, a block and a steal.- K-State held USC Upstate to two made field goals in the third quarter (2-of-7), allowing the first made field goal with 3:42 to play in the stanza. The Wildcats opened the quarter on a 16-0 run and won the frame, 31-9.&nbsp; - In the fourth quarter, Sundell secured the triple-double with her 10th rebound at the 2:01 mark of the fourth quarter. She was immediately subbed out to a loud ovation from the K-State faithful. - For the second quarter of the night, K-State held USC Upstate to just two points in a quarter as the Wildcats won the frame 29-2. K-State held the Spartans to 1-of-9 (.111) shooting in the fourth quarter with the lone points coming at 8:07 of the frame. This was the first time K-State has held an opponent to two or fewer points in two quarters in the same game. - K-State shot 57.6 percent (38-of-66) from the field including 46.4 percent (13-of-28) from 3-point range. Sundell's triple-double helps No. 13 K-State women blast S. Carolina Upstate

DETROIT (AP) — Dan Campbell’s gambles paid off. North Carolina has interviewed former New England Patriots coach and six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick for its head coaching position, two people with knowledge of the situation said Thursday. Both people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the school isn’t commenting publicly on its search. Belichick’s interview, first reported by Inside Carolina, comes a week after the school fired its winningest coach in College Football Hall of Famer Mack Brown. BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Boise State running back and Heisman Trophy candidate Ashton Jeanty confirmed Thursday that this will be his last season at the university. The nation’s leading rusher with 2,288 yards on 312 carries along with 28 total touchdowns, has long been expected to enter the NFL Draft after his record-setting season. Jeanty, who needs 341 yards to surpass Barry Sanders’ all-time single-season rushing record, will have at least two more games to break the record. Friday’s Mountain West title game will be Jeanty’s last chance to make his case for the Heisman Trophy. “I feel like I’m the best player in the country,” Jeanty said at the Mountain West Conference championship press conference. I’ve put that on notice every single week, and it’s just the same thing. I take it week by week. If I’m picked to win (the Heisman), I win. But my focus right now is going out and playing my best football for my teammates and coaches and winning a championship.”

Try the more than $115 million that will be spread across the conferences at the end of the season, all depending on who gets in and which teams go the farthest. According to the&nbsp;<a href="https://collegefootballplayoff.com/sports/2017/9/20/revenue-distribution.aspx" target="_blank">College Football Playoff website</a>, the 12 teams simply making the bracket earn their conferences $4 million each. Another $4 million goes to conferences whose teams get into the quarterfinals. Then, there’s $6 million more for teams that make the semifinals and another $6 million for those who play for the title. Most of this bonanza comes courtesy of ESPN, which is forking over $1.3 billion a year to televise the new postseason. A lot of that money is already earmarked — more goes to the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference than the Big 12 or Atlantic Coast — but a lot is up for grabs in the 11 games that will play out between the opening round on Dec. 20 and the final on Jan. 20.

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wvball/2024-25/bios/reyes_phoebe_zp2h">Phoebe Reyes</a>&nbsp;of the Barton Community College volleyball team has been announced as a first team selection of the 2024 NJCAA Division I Volleyball All-America honors.

Landing on the second team last year, Reyes is the 31st selection in forty-five years of the program's history, joining Mylena Testoni's consecutive first team honors from the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

The 24th first team honor in program history, Reyes joins just four others with two-time All-America distinction by joining Testoni, Juliana Escobar ('00 and '01), Alexis Shepherd ('94 and '95), and Michelle Hall ('89 and '90).

Earlier named the KJCCC/Region 6 Most Valuable Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, Reyes helped the Cougars to its second straight league title by winning the league with a 15-1 record before capturing its first Region 6/Plains District Tournament crown since 2020.

Advancing to its 25th NJCAA National Tournament appearance, the 6th seeded Cougars swept its opening pair of matches until getting derailed in the semifinal match for an eventual 4th place national finish and a 33-4 overall record.

The native of San Francisco de Macorís, Dominican Republic, played just three rotations of the Cougars' 6-2 offensive scheme but still ranked fourth in the KJCCC at 3.51 kills per set on a .271 attack percentage helping the squad overall to a league leading .259 efficiency.

As the Cougars swept 28 of their 37 matches during the season, Reyes' 114 sets played produced 3.23 kills per set on a .272 efficiency, reaching double-digit kills in nineteen contests posting a season high .450 efficient night at then No. 6 Colby and a pair of 18-kill performances, the first at Butler with two dates later at home against Colby.

Down the stretch in Barton's seven match post-season run, Reyes upped her game with five double-digit kills performances in averaging 3.30 kills per set while defensively averaging .74 blocks per set behind 17 blocks in the 23 frames played.

Reyes' initial season as a Cougar was equally historic, voted the league and region Freshman of the Year and the Most Valuable Player on the way to the second team NJCAA All-America list helping Barton to its then-first league title since 2011 with a 13-3 record in concluding the season in the Region VI/Plains District semifinals at 25-6.

The A-A honor was the third 2nd team selection in Cougars' history and was the program's first top freshman award winner and player of the year recipient since Maria Santos and Testoni each received the distinction respectively in the 2020 season.

Barton's Reyes becomes program's 5th two-time NJCAA All-America winner

An all-around defensive effort at the Power Plant would not be enough Wednesday night as the Barton Community College women's basketball team fell on the road 63-46 to Butler Community College.

Holding the nation's 22nd ranked offense to 17 points below their average, a 4:31 scoreless stretch during a 9-0 Grizzlies run to open the third quarter had the Cougars facing an 18-point deficit with 5:49 to play.&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/delisle_charolette_io5m">Charolette Delisle</a>'s bucket and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/donanu_regina_yoh6">Regina Donanu</a>'s personal 5-0 stretch ignited a late comeback closing the stanza on a 15-6 run pulling Barton within single digits, 45-36 at the quarters end.

Delisle's opening bucket to start the final quarter brought the Cougars within seven but one of seven Butler three-pointers rung in on the night and eight costly fourth quarter turnovers all but sealed the game with a late 6-0 run gifting the Grizzlies their largest lead of 19.

Suffering its fifth straight loss and third straight in the series, Barton drops to 0-5 in league play and 4-7 overall while Butler snaps its two game skid improving to 2-2 in conference play and 7-2 on the season.

With three games left on the pre-Christmas break schedule, Barton will host Pratt Community College on Saturday night in a 5:30 p.m. tip before returning on the road for the final two games next Wednesday at Seward County Community College and next Saturday at No. 5 Dodge City Community College.

Barton shot 39.2 percent but faced a 17-point differential stemming from 27 turnovers and Butler's 7-of-19 (36.8%) three point shooting.

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2024-25/bios/onugha_vivian_7u24">Vivian Onugha</a>&nbsp;and Donanu were the lone Cougars in double-figure scoring each adding 14 points apiece.

Onugha posted her seventh double-double of the season behind 14 points and 13 rebounds including six coming on the offensive end to lead Barton to a slight plus-two rebound advantage.

Donanu added her 14 points on 6-of-15 shooting knocking down two of the Cougars' four three-pointers while distributing a game high four assists. Delisle fell just shy of tying her career high with nine points on 4-of-5 shooting and corralling five rebounds.

A trio of Grizzlies reached double figures led by Ashley Singhateh's 15 points and Destiny Smith's 13 points coming off the bench as Butler outscored the Cougars 39-14 in bench production.

Mya Mayberry concluded the double figure scoring for the Grizzlies adding 11 points on 3-of-7 shooting from behind the arc with four assists.

The Panthers defeated Dodge City, Liberal, Hays, and Garden City by a combined 105-27 score during the regular season. Accordingly, Great Bend head coach Erin Beck was named WAC Coach of the Year.

The Panthers also took home two of the biggest league honors for players as junior Ian Premer was named Offensive Player of the Year, and junior Trenton Kern was named Defensive Player of the Year.

Premer caught 30 passes this season for 541 yards and eight touchdowns. He also ran the ball 37 times for 260 yards and a pair of scores. He caught five passes against Buhler early in the season, taking all five for a school-record five touchdowns in one game. His 167 total yards that night are sixth-best in a single game at GBHS.

Both Premer and Kern were part of a dominant Panther defense that set several school records. Kern was the lone Panther to record more than 75 tackles this season with 113, including a team-high 43 solos. With 110 tackles last season, Kern is one of just two Panthers to record more than 106 tackles in a season twice since 1998. His 272 career tackles rank third on the school's all-time list (since 2001) with a season to go. Kern's 23 tackles against Kapaun last year are tied for second-most in a single game at GBHS, and his 20 tackles against Liberal this season rank sixth.

Great Bend's Beck named WAC Football Coach of the Year; Premer, Kern honored

For the second consecutive outing a streak came to an end for the Barton Community College men's basketball team as the 6th ranked Cougars fell 82-72 to 9th ranked Butler Community College Wednesday evening in El Dorado.

The loss snaps Barton's three-game win streak over the Grizzlies, dropping the Cougars to 3-2 in conference play and 8-2 overall while Butler improves to 4-0 in league and 9-1 on the season.

Barton has three games remaining before the holiday break with its lone home contest coming this Saturday in a 7:30 p.m. versus Pratt Community College. The Cougars then travel to Seward County Community College on Wednesday before wrapping up the fall slate the following Saturday at Dodge City Community College.

Following a seven point swing to the Grizzlies, Barton fired back with the next six but after a Butler three-pointer the first half momentum swung back to the home team.

With a double technical being issued to Butler's Russell Branch and Kindell, the Cougars' leading scorer was sent to the bench with his third foul for the remaining three minutes.

Barton was able to maintain their lead following a pair of&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mbkb/2024-25/bios/sanogo_modibo_knhy">Modibo Sanogo</a>&nbsp;free throws but for the next four minutes the Cougars were held scoreless on eight straight by the Grizzlies.

A pair of four point stretches by Barton sliced the deficit with Butler responding with a five pack of points including their 4th three-pointer of the half in riding to an eventual 36-33 edge at the break.

Returning to the court for second half action, Kindell canned a trey immediately tying it up with a perfect trip to the line following a Butler bucket knotting things up again at 38.

Butler took the next six points and following a Moss bucket, drained another triple taking their then-largest lead of seven.

Trailing by five two minutes later, Moss put the Cougars on his back with seven straight including an offensive rebound putback for an And-1 putting Barton back on top 52-50 at the 12:29 mark.

It would be the Cougars' last lead of the contest as Butler went into the bonus at the ten minute mark, capitalizing on free throws within a 9-0 stretch.

At age 40,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lindsey-vonn-comeback-skiing-olympics-cf0aad2667affe516e1f7ceae5fb951a">Lindsey Vonn</a>&nbsp;is going to enter an official ski race for the first time in nearly six years this weekend. Having already announced last month that she was coming out of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/general-news-bcf56ea73a934ddf8f76dc53c61e8dd9">retirement</a>, Vonn will race lower-level FIS downhills and super-Gs on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, in Copper Mountain, Colorado, U.S. Ski Team head coach Paul Kristofic told The Associated Press. Vonn needs some decent results to improve her long-dormant ranking so she can enter World Cup races this season under a new wild card rule. “Obviously her history speaks for itself and she’s definitely the most decorated speed skier out there and has done amazing things throughout her career,” Kristofic said Wednesday. “So it will be really, really fun and interesting to see what she can do.” It’s likely that many of the current World Cup racers will be competing alongside Vonn at Copper Mountain. IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Cade McNamara, who started Iowa’s first eight games at quarterback, has said he will enter the transfer portal and petition the NCAA for a seventh season of eligibility. McNamara, who spent his first four seasons at Michigan and the last two at Iowa, made the announcement on social media Wednesday. “My last two years at the University of Iowa have been an incredible journey,”&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DDKT82bx5DT/?hl=en&amp;img_index=1" target="_blank">he wrote on Instagram.</a>&nbsp;“Through so many ups and downs, I couldn’t be more thankful for the amazing people and experiences I’ve had here. OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Pop Isaacs helped unranked Creighton upset No. 1 Kansas 76-63 on Wednesday night, scoring a season-high 27 points and matching his career high with six 3-pointers.

Kansas cut a 13-point deficit to one early in the second half, but Isaacs hit back-to-back 3s to rebuild the lead as the Bluejays (6-3) pulled away for their second straight win over a top-ranked opponent. They knocked off Connecticut 85-66 in Omaha in February.

The Jayhawks (7-1) lost a regular-season game against an unranked nonconference opponent for the first time in three years. Creighton had been in 16 straight Associated Press polls before dropping out this week following losses in three of its previous four games.

Students rushed the court at the final buzzer as flames shot out of the top of the goal standards.

Isaacs’ shooting display overshadowed what was supposed to be the featured matchup between two of the nation’s best big men, the 7-foot-1 Ryan Kalkbrenner and the Jayhawks’ 7-2 Hunter Dickinson.

Isaacs was 10 of 15 from the field, including 6 of 9 on 3s, and added seven rebounds and four assists in his best performance since he transferred from Texas Tech in the offseason.

Kalkbrenner, who had missed the Bluejays' previous game because of a lower-body injury, and Steven Ashworth, still feeling the effects of an ankle sprain from two weeks ago, each scored 17 points.

The Jayhawks struggled offensively and never led. Dajuan Harris had 15 points and AJ Storr and Zeke Mayo added 12 apiece for Kansas, which shot 36%.

Unranked Creighton knocks off No. 1 Kansas behind Isaacs'  27 points

Players must be assigned female at birth or have transitioned to female before going through male puberty to compete in LPGA tournaments or the eight USGA championships for females under new gender policies published Wednesday.

The policies, which begin in 2025, follow more than a year of study involving medicine, science, sport physiology and gender policy law.

The updated policies would rule out eligibility for Hailey Davidson, who missed qualifying for the U.S. Women’s Open this year by one shot&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/hailey-davidson-transgender-lpga-qualifying-usga-65a27dd4b4db5c9f519ce0396f0bc9a8">and came up short in LPGA Q-school</a>.

Davidson, who turned 32 on Tuesday, began hormone treatments when she was in her early 20s in 2015 and in 2021 underwent gender-affirming surgery, which was required under the LPGA’s previous gender policy. She had won this year on a Florida mini-tour called NXXT Golf until the circuit announced in March that players had to be assigned female at birth.

“Can’t say I didn’t see this coming,” Davidson wrote Wednesday on an Instagram story. “Banned from the Epson and the LPGA. All the silence and people wanting to stay ‘neutral’ thanks for absolutely nothing. This happened because of all your silence.”

By making it to the second stage of Q-school, Davidson would have had very limited status on the Epson Tour, the pathway to the LPGA.

The LPGA and USGA say their policies were geared toward being inclusive of gender identities and expression while striving for equity in competition.

The LPGA said its working group of experts advised that the effects of male puberty allowed for competitive advantages in golf compared with players who had not gone through puberty.

“Our policy is reflective of an extensive, science-based and inclusive approach,” said LPGA Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan, who announced Monday that she is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lpga-commissioner-mollie-marcoux-samaan-resign-3982ea6679cb4a56e77a0d0db70c5cf2">resigning in January</a>. “The policy represents our continued commitment to ensuring that all feel welcome within our organization, while preserving the fairness and competitive equity of our elite competitions.”

Mike Whan, the former LPGA commissioner and now CEO of the USGA, said it developed the updated policy independently and later discovered it was similar to those used by swimming, track and field, and other sports.

“It starts with competitive fairness as the North star,” Whan said in a telephone interview. “We tried not to get into politics, or state by state or any of that stuff. We just simply said, ‘Where would somebody — at least medically today — where do we believe somebody would have a competitive advantage in the field?’ And we needed to draw a line.

“We needed to be able to walk into any women’s event and say with confidence that nobody here has a competitive advantage based on their gender. And this policy delivers that.”

The “Competitive Fairness Gender Policy” for the USGA takes effect for the 2025 championship season that starts with the U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball on May 10-14. Qualifying began late this year, though there were no transgender players who took part.

“Will that change in the years to come as medicine changes? Probably,” Whan said. “But I think today this stacks up.”

The LPGA “Gender Policy for Competition Eligibility” would apply to the LPGA Tour, Epson Tour, Ladies European Tour and qualifying for the tours.

Players assigned male at birth must prove they have not experienced any part of puberty beyond the first stage or after age 12, whichever comes first, and then meet limitation standards for testosterone levels.

The LPGA begins its 75th season on Jan. 30 with the Tournament of Champions in Orlando, Florida.

LPGA and USGA set new gender policies for female golfers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals announced Tuesday they have a reached an agreement with Diamond Sports Group to continue broadcasting their games next season.

The Royals are one of four Major League Baseball franchises that are part owners of their regional sports network.

Games will air on FanDuel Sports Network Kansas City. FanDuel took over naming rights for Diamond’s 16 regional sports networks last month after Diamond had an agreement with Bally since March 2021.

The Royals and Diamond offered a streaming package last season that saw more than 40,000 subscribers.

Diamond Sports Group, which had its bankruptcy reorganization plans approved last month, has agreements with seven teams for the 2025 season. Besides the Royals, Diamond will broadcast the Atlanta Braves, Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Angels, Miami Marlins, St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays.

The Texas Rangers, whose deal expired in October, are assessing their options for next season after they announced they would not be partnering with Diamond.

Miami's playoff hopes took an all-but-final nosedive while Alabama's got a boost Tuesday night in&nbsp;<a href="https://collegefootballplayoff.com/news/2024/12/3/cfp-rankings-241203.aspx">the last rankings</a>&nbsp;before the 12-team College Football Playoff bracket is set next weekend.

The Hurricanes (10-2) moved down six spots to No. 12 — the first team out of the projected bracket after suffering their second loss of the season. They are one spot behind the Crimson Tide (9-3), who won last week and moved up two spots to No. 11, where they are projected as the last team in and the fourth from the Southeastern Conference.

To make things worse for the ’Canes, selection committee chair and Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said there was no way for them to leapfrog Alabama since neither team plays next weekend. The odds of them moving up based on lopsided results in the weekend's conference title games are virtually zero.

The Miami-Alabama sorting was the strongest indication yet that the selection committee is looking at more than mere wins and losses, but also at strength of schedule and other factors that appear to give the SEC an edge.

“We still think Miami is a very strong team,” Manuel said. “It came down to a difference in their body of work ... not just wins, not just losses but the totality of the season and how those teams performed.”

He mentioned three key data points: Alabama was 3-1 against current Top 25 teams and Miami is 0-1; Alabama is 6-1 against winning teams while Miami is 4-2; and Miami has lost two of its last three games.

Oregon stayed at No. 1 for the fifth straight week and will head into Saturday's Big Ten title game against Penn State as the only undefeated team in big-time college football.

The pairings for college football's first 12-team playoff will be set Sunday, the day after the conference title games. The playoffs start Dec. 20, with the title game set for Jan. 20 in Atlanta.

Ohio State moved down four spots to No. 6 after its loss to Michigan.

That bumped Texas up a spot to No. 2, Penn State to No. 3, Notre Dame to No. 4 and Georgia to No. 5.

The selection committee all but designated the Big 12 as a one-bid league, moving Arizona State and Iowa State up only one spot each to Nos. 15 and 16.

The top five ranked conference champions are guaranteed bids, which means the winner of the Big 12 title game is in even it doesn't reach the top 12 — another factor in Miami's likely ouster.

SMU, on a nine-game winning streak, moved up a notch to No. 8 and is the Atlantic Coast Conference’s highest-ranked team, but is still potentially vulnerable if it loses the title game to No. 17 Clemson.

The crux of this week’s drama comes from — where else? — the SEC.

Alabama is only two weeks removed from an ugly 24-3 loss at Oklahoma. The Tide still got better treatment than Miami, which fell 42-38 at Syracuse last week with a spot in the ACC title game at stake.

Also in the SEC, Mississippi was ranked 13th and South Carolina 14th — answering a question of just how deep into the SEC pool the committee was willing to go. Neither team has another chance to build its resume.

Other rankings: No. 7 Tennessee, No. 9 Indiana and No. 10 Boise State. The projected bracket includes four teams each from the Big Ten and SEC and one each from the ACC, Mountain West and Big 12, plus independent Notre Dame.

SEC: This will be awkward for the loser of Texas vs. Georgia. The Longhorns are perched too high to miss the playoff, though a loss would make them 0-2 vs. Georgia and 11-0 against everyone else, and they also have the conference’s easiest schedule. For Georgia, it would be a third loss, but the committee doesn’t seem likely to punish the Bulldogs for playing in the title game.

Big 12, Mountain West: The winner of ASU-Iowa State is still likely outside of the group of four conference champs that receive first-round byes unless UNLV upsets Boise State.

ACC: If Clemson beats SMU, it puts the 17th-ranked team in the bracket and makes the ACC a potential snub for the second straight year. (Remember Florida State last season?)
