After managing just six points in the opening quarter, Barton settled in defensively and began chipping away, holding Coffeyville to six second-quarter points to head into halftime tied at 23.

Seven straight points midway through the third quarter, followed by another seven-point burst late in the frame that stretched across the quarter break, put Barton in front for good. The Cougars maintained a two-possession cushion the rest of the way before closing on a decisive six-point run to extend the margin to ten for the second time, the final coming with 2:14 remaining. Defensive pressure forced Coffeyville into empty possessions down the stretch, while timely buckets and trips to the free-throw line sealed the outcome and snapped Barton's three-game slide in the series.

The season's third consecutive victory improves Barton to 7–9 in Jayhawk Conference play and 9–13 overall, while Coffeyville, receiving votes in the latest national poll, slips to 11–5 in conference and 17–5 on the season.

Barton heads back on the road Wednesday for another key Jayhawk matchup, making the short trip for a 5:30 p.m. tip at No. 20 Hutchinson Community College.

The Cougars finished with a 44–33 rebounding edge, including 14 offensive boards that fueled second-chance opportunities and a points-in-the-paint advantage.

At 125&nbsp;Jamal Garrett&nbsp;opened his tournament with a bye before drawing a challenging matchup in his first bout, dropping a third-period fall to No. 6 ranked Devon Fraizer of Iowa Western Community College.

Joshua "AJ" Almanza&nbsp;(133) and&nbsp;Tyler Gouker&nbsp;(141) also saw action for the Cougars, each dropping a pair of bouts in their respective brackets.

Competing unattached at 149 pounds,&nbsp;Colin Little&nbsp;posted a 1-2 record. After dropping his opening match, Little rebounded with a 50-second fall over Payton Westby of Ottawa University.

The Cougars will return home Thursday for their lone home dual of the season, hosting Neosho County Community College and Cowley College beginning at 4:00 p.m. Barton will also host Great Bend High School boys' and girls wrestling matches against Liberal as part of the evening's action.

So, what do I have to do to see you in a tight leather outfit?” Wasserman released a statement saying he deeply regretted his correspondence with Maxwell and that he never had a business or personal relationship with Epstein. Maxwell is serving a 20-year prison sentence for convictions on sex-trafficking charges.

Lindsey Vonn is sitting out a World Cup super-G race on Saturday after crashing and injuring her left knee a day earlier but remains on track for the Milan Cortina Olympics. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani won't pitch for Japan in the World Baseball Classic in March. Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts says Ohtani has decided to focus solely on being the designated hitter for his country. Roberts says the Dodgers would have supported him if he wanted to pitch. World Series MVP Yoshinobu Yamamoto will pitch for Japan despite a heavy workload with the champion Dodgers last season. Ohtani says he is healthy and has had a normal offseason because he hasn't been rehabbing from surgery, which he was last year.

ESPN has finalized its purchase of NFL Network and other league digital assets after receiving approval from government regulators. The deal that was announced Saturday night gives ESPN control over NFL Network, NFL Fantasy and rights to distribute the RedZone channel. The NFL will receive a 10% equity stake in ESPN. The Athletic first reported the approval. Changes on NFL Network are expected in April when NFL Media employees join ESPN. NFL Network will be part of ESPN’s direct-to-consumer product. ESPN will distribute the RedZone channel to cable and satellite operators, while the NFL retains digital distribution rights.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Justin Rose delivered a performance Saturday at Torrey Pines that Tiger Woods could appreciate, stretching his lead to as many as eight shots until a few late mistakes led to a 4-under 68 for a six-stroke lead in the Farmers Insurance Open. Rose, who won at Torrey in 2019, started the third round with a four-shot lead and quickly pulled away with a brilliant stretch of three holes on the front nine of the South course. Jayhawk Women's Standings, Scores, Schedule

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Infielder Vinnie Pasquantino agreed to an $11.1 million, two-year contract with the Royals on Friday, pending a successful physical, that will keep him in Kansas City through the 2027 season.

Pasquantino gets $4.2 million this year and $6.9 million in 2027. He has escalators that could raise his 2027 salary to a maximum of $11.5 million.

He was in his second year of salary arbitration eligibility this offseason and remains under club control through 2028.

Pasquantino comes off a season with career highs in several categories, including home runs (32) and RBIs (113) after being sidelined by injuries for much of 2023 and 2024. He became the eighth Royals player to produce at least 30 homers and doubles in a season.

“Vinnie is a premier run producer, a huge part of our team and someone our fans have really connected with,” Royals general manager J.J. Picollo said in a statement. “We’re proud of the player he’s become, and that he’s earned this contract. We are happy as an organization and for Vinnie personally to have stability moving forward.”

His 2027 salary can increase by up to $600,000 based on 2026 plate appearances: $200,000 each for 450, 500 and 550.

It would rise by $4 million if he wins a 2026 MVP award, $3 million if he finishes second through fifth in the voting, $2 million for sixth through 10th, $1.5 million for 11-15th and $1.25 million for 16th-20th.

His 2027 salary would go up by $1 million if he is selected to the All-MLB first team and $750,000 for making the second team.

The Barton Community College wrestling team turned in a competitive night on the mats Wednesday evening in Jayhawk Conference action at the Colby Event Center, coming up short in a pair of duals against Cloud County Community College and host Colby Community College.

Individually&nbsp;S'Ron Hill&nbsp;(184 pounds) and&nbsp;Brennen Pfannenstiel&nbsp;(149) paced the Barton lineup, each posting 2-0 nights on the mat while five other Cougars recorded a victory across the two duals.

With the results, Barton moves to 0-5 in Jayhawk Conference play and 2-17 overall on the season. The Cougars will remain on the road Saturday, competing at the Golden Norseman Open in Miami, Oklahoma. Barton then returns home next Thursday for its lone home dual of the season hosting Neosho County and No. 11 Cowley College, along with Great Bend High School boys' and girls' wrestling matches against Liberal.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz has overcome cramps and injury to defeat Alexander Zverev in a thrilling five-set semifinal at the Australian Open. This victory makes him the youngest man to reach the finals of all four Grand Slam events in the Open era. At 22, he aims to be the youngest to complete a career Grand Slam. Alcaraz won 6-4, 7-6, 6-7, 6-7, 7-5 in 5 hours and 27 minutes. Despite being two points from a semifinal victory in the third set, he had to go all the way to five. CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland (AP) — Lindsey Vonn crashed in her final downhill before the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics on Friday and was left limping and applying attention to her left knee. Vonn lost control when landing a jump in a World Cup race and ended up tangled in the safety nets. She eventually got up after receiving medical attention and walked away gingerly, taking weight off her left knee and using her poles to steady herself. She then clicked her skis back on but stopped to check her left knee. The race was later canceled after three of the first six racers crashed.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Aryna Sabalenka is focusing more on past losses than victories to motivate herself for the Australian Open final against Elena Rybakina. SAN DIEGO (AP) — Brooks Koepka has rarely felt so relieved after failing to break par. The five-time major champion made his return to the PGA Tour after nearly four years on Saudi-funded LIV Golf. Koepka wasn't sure what to expect at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. What he heard was mostly a chorus of “Welcome back” from a big gallery. He didn't make a birdie until the 18th hole and shot a 73 that left him 11 shots out of the lead. Chiles was stripped of the bronze because the U.S. was said to have not challenged a score in time. Romania's Ana Maria Barbosu received the medal. The case rests on a handful of seconds.

MILAN (AP) — Australia has a "home away from home" for the Milan Cortina Olympics at the European Training Centre in Gavirate, Italy. Opened by the Australian Institute of Sport nearly 15 years ago, it provides a base for 3,000 Australian athletes traveling through Europe each year. The center features a gym, games room, and Australian touches like Vegemite and Melbourne coffee. Director Fiona de Jong says it addresses the challenge of long-distance travel for Australian athletes and is the closest Australia will get to a home Winter Olympics. The location was chosen for its proximity to Milan and supportive local community, creating a welcoming environment for athletes.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz has overcome cramps and injury to defeat Alexander Zverev in a thrilling five-set semifinal at the Australian Open. This victory makes him the youngest man to reach the finals of all four Grand Slam events in the Open era. At 22, he aims to be the youngest to complete a career Grand Slam. Alcaraz won 6-4, 7-6, 6-7, 6-7, 7-5 in 5 hours and 27 minutes. Despite being two points from a semifinal victory in the third set, he had to go all the way to five. Alcaraz will face either Jannik Sinner or Novak Djokovic next. The afternoon semifinal delayed the start of the night semifinal.CRANS-MONTANA, Switzerland (AP) — Lindsey Vonn crashed in her final downhill before the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics on Friday and was left limping and applying attention to her left knee. Vonn lost control when landing a jump in a World Cup race and ended up tangled in the safety nets. She eventually got up after receiving medical attention and walked away gingerly, taking weight off her left knee and using her poles to steady herself. She then clicked her skis back on but stopped to check her left knee. Friday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

This past fall, high school volleyball history was made in Western New York.

On September 6, Frontier High School hosted crosstown rival Hamburg High School for the first-ever “Frontier Volleyball Stadium Game.”

The community event, a girls-boys doubleheader, was held on the 50-yard line in Frontier’s football stadium, marking the first-ever sanctioned outdoor high school boys volleyball match in New York state history.

School officials also believe the event could be the first outdoor sanctioned boys volleyball match in U.S. history, and the series was the largest sanctioned outdoor volleyball match in state history with more than 2,000 fans in attendance.

Frontier High School varsity boys volleyball coach Nick Penberthy, who is also a fifth-grade teacher, said the idea hatched in August 2023 after the University of Nebraska women’s volleyball team played an outdoor match at Memorial Stadium against Omaha in front of 92,003 fans – the largest recorded crowd to watch a women’s sporting event in U.S. history.

Copycat events ensued the following year, including in the fall of 2024 when an inaugural “Showdown at Sundown” event was jointly held between Newark Catholic High School and Newark High School in Ohio, proving an outdoor match could be replicated at the high school level.

At his annual end-of-season meeting in 2024, Penberthy met with his athletic director, Jim Helmicki, and the two shared ideas of how Frontier might be able to put on its own event in the future.

Penberthy said he then reached out to the programs involved in the Ohio event and still has all the copious notes based on their feedback. Penberthy and Helmicki agreed that to make the idea a success they would need community support, so they reached out to rival Hamburg High School – which is in the same town as Frontier – and decided to make their annual “Paws vs. Claws” matches the outdoor series.

“I think the unique thing for us was that we were able to feature the boys and the girls varsity back to back, which no one else had done,” Penberthy said. “That was kind of like our own unique spin on it. But the big thing was … if we wanted it to be big, it’s got to be a community event.”

With school and community support, Frontier’s planning for the September series started back in November 2024. The “Sport Court” surface then arrived this past May and the volleyball athletes set the court up for the first time in June, and trials were held on the court throughout the summer to work out any kinks before the big day.

To make the event inclusive for fans of all ages, the day of the event also provided much more than volleyball matches, as there were DJs, food trucks and a “Kids Zone” featuring bounce houses and inflatables and face painting, among other offerings.

Initially, Penberthy said the goal was to get over 1,000 fans to attend, including Frontier and Hamburg students K-12 getting in for free. Penberthy said they ended up selling more than 1,000 pre-sale tickets and estimated there was more than 2,000 total fans in attendance during the event, describing the scene as a “homecoming crowd” in the stands. He credited local media coverage and social media buzz for helping drum up excitement for the matches.

Penberthy said a lot of alumni from the volleyball programs attended and brought their kids, and there was a large youth turnout from the schools.

During the matches, every player on each team got to participate, and the football scoreboard was used to display the faces of the players – another small touch making the event special. Penberthy said there was an informal agreement that every player would get in for at least a full set so everyone could be a part of the history of the day.

On the court, Hamburg outlasted Frontier 3-2 in the girls match and Frontier’s boys team won in straight sets 3-0.

With the popularity of the inaugural event, Penberthy anticipates the stadium series could become an annual tradition. He commended the school administration, staff and community for making it happen.

“The school community is great at Frontier. … There’s so many people that, if they didn’t do their part, it wouldn’t have been able to happen,” Penberthy said. “I think that’s kind of like the goal of high school sports in general, like even bringing in the music department for the national anthem, and just like different things to bring all these entities that sometimes are at odds (together).”

Frontier owns the playing service used during the stadium games and is considering making it an annual back-to-school event. Penberthy said the monies that came into the program from the event are in a separate account for future outdoor games, and one improvement they’re already looking at getting is an underlayment for underneath the court to make it sturdier.

There are some kinks that organizers would like to work out before the next stadium games, but Penberthy said that overall it was a massive success. He also said that they’re looking at maybe adding a preseason tournament outdoors to get more teams involved in the future.

High school boys volleyball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States, according to the annual NFHS Sports Participation Survey, and girls volleyball remains extremely popular.

Over the past three years, the number of boys playing volleyball has jumped from 66,487 to 95,972 – and the sport now is No. 11 on the list of top sports. In addition, 25 state associations are now conducting state volleyball championships for boys.

Girls volleyball has been a consistent top 10 sport throughout the survey’s history and reached an all-time record for participation this past year nationwide with 492,799 student-athletes. The sport trails just outdoor track and field for total number of participants for girls sports.

“It’s growing so fast right now,” Penberthy said. “So to put the sport in focus like that is really awesome for the growth of the sport.”

Friday Area High School Basketball Schedule

The Barton Community College men's basketball team delivered a much-needed complete performance Wednesday night, rolling to an 84–56 Jayhawk Conference victory over Colby Community College.

After an evenly played opening stretch, Barton snapped an 8–8 tie with an 8–0 burst to seize early momentum, then followed a Colby 1-of-2 trip to the free-throw line with the defining sequence of the night. The Cougars unleashed a 17–0 run as part of a devastating 25–1 stretch that turned the contest into a runaway. During that span, Colby went ten minutes without a field goal and nearly seven minutes without a point, as Barton's pressure defense forced empty possessions and fueled efficient offense at the other end. The Cougars weren't finished before the break, closing the half with an additional 10–0 run to build a 27-point cushion and carry a commanding 43–23 advantage into the locker room while holding Colby to just 21 percent shooting in the opening half.

The second half followed a similar script of sustained execution on both ends. Colby briefly found a spark after intermission, but Barton quickly extinguished any momentum with another decisive four-minute stretch, piecing together a 10–0 run to reestablish control. The Cougars continued to dictate tempo and spacing, later tacking on a 12–3 stretch that pushed the lead to its largest margin of the night at 36 with 4:52 remaining. With the outcome firmly in hand, Colby outscored Barton 12–5 over the final three minutes to dent the final margin, as Barton secured its 12th straight victory by its largest margin since 2010.

Barton improves to 12–8 overall and 7–7 in Jayhawk Conference play and 12-8 overall while Colby drops to 3-12 in league and 5-16 on the season. The Cougars return home Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. matchup at Fleske Fieldhouse against Coffeyville Community College

Barton's cleanest effort of the season resulted in a season-low six turnovers while defensively clamping down to hold the Trojans to their lowest series scoring output since 2018.

Reed is eligible to return to the PGA Tour in September. It will be one year since he last played on LIV in August 2025. The tour season will be over by then but he can play in the fall.

The 41-year-old Akron native wiped his eyes with a towel after the Cavs played highlights of him scoring 25 straight points in the 2007 Eastern Conference finals. The Lakers lost 129-99 to the Cavs, but James appreciated getting to see his son, Bronny James, play in the fourth quarter.
